McHappy Day. It’s become a tradition, part of Canadian culture. And after 20 years and almost $40 million raised, that’s really no surprise. One day a year, since 1977, McDonald’s Restaurants have been donating the proceeds from Happy Meals to Ronald McDonald House. In Fonthill, McHappy Day has become a major event with local “celebrity” servers, special guests, and fundraising activities. This McHappy Day, May 8, the Fonthill McDonald’s Restuarant will donat $1 from each Big Mac, Happy Meal and hot McCafe beverage sold in the restaurant

to Ronald McDonald House. Throughout the year $0.10 from every Happy Meal is also donated. This year, the local McDonald’s is also holding a book sale, from May 6 through May 8, and a flower sale, offering hanging baskets of flowers and ferns from local greenhouse Rice Road Greenhouses. “Those guys have helped us out so much,” says Terry Ware, People Manager for the Fonthill restaurant, of making sure the flowers they sell are locally grown. In store that day Paul Owen and Jane Gilmour from Pelham Cares will be on hand to help raise funds. Ware says she specifically asks for Owen to take part, noting he is a great salesman when it comes to See FONTHILL/page 6

of $10,000, it’s no wonder many refer to Joshn Tiessen as a prodigy. At just 17 years old Tiessen’s resume is impressive. His first public exhibition of fine art and photography was at the age of 11. In the six years since that first show, Tiessen See TIESSEN/page 12
We all know what it is like to feel hungry, but do you know what it is to be hungry and not have access to food? Thousands of Canadians, many of them children, do know exactly how it feels to be hungry and have nothing to eat. Pelham Cares, the local food bank, is working to increase awareness of hunger here in Pelham by taking part in Give It Up For Hunger during Hunger Awareness Week, May 6 to 10. Hunger Awareness Week is a week-long initiative that challenges Canadians to learn more about the issue of hunger, the important work of food banks and to take action. Nearly 900,000 Canadians will visit a food bank for assistance this month alone. Of those, 38 per cent are children. Hunger is often a hidden issue and one Pelham Cares is hoping to bring into the
light. Here in Pelham the rise in need is represented by an increase of three per cent in 2013, in those turning to Pelham Cares for support, with more than 119 individuals being assisted in March alone. This included 66 adults and 53 youth. All across the country, Canadians are being encouraged to Give It Up for Hunger during Hunger Awareness Week and these numbers show why participation is especially important for Pelham. What does ‘giving it up’ really mean? It’s as easy as three simple steps: Give It Up – Close to 900,000 Canadians have had to rely on food banks this past month. On May 8, Canadians are asked o understand what it’s like to have food out of reach by fasting for

a day and giving up breakfast, lunch and dinner; Give a Shout - Share your experience by going online to show your support via Facebook, Twitter, a blog; and Give It Out - Donate food, funds or your time to your local food bank. Together, Canadians can make an impact on the solvable issue of hunger in Canada and find solutions to hunger in communities across Canada, includig Pelham. For more information on Hunger Awareness Week visit www.hungerawarenessweek.ca. Hunger Awareness Week was created to provide food banks with an opportunity to educate about the reality of hunger in Canada and to encourage all Canadians to make a choice to help those in need.
