Five services mark town’s remembrance BY WAYNE CAMPBELL

for the VOICE After five Remembrance services in two days, Bernie Law should relax. The co-ordinator of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 613’s program, however, beamed in the Legion hall following the final service at Pelham Veterans Park. “It was extremely gratifying,” he said about the turnout for Monday’s Remembrance Day ceremony. A crowd of up to five deep surrounded the park on Regional Road 20 in front of the hall to join the veterans, army cadets, Legion members and political leaders. “The community came together to honour veterans both young and old,” he said. Included among Second World War, Korean War and Peacekeeping veterans were a few from the Bosnian and Afghanistan wars. On Sunday, Branch 613 led services at cenotaphs in Fenwick’s Centennial Park, at Ridgeville’s Old

Pelham Township Hall, and behind the town hall in Fonthill at Pelham Peace Park. It also went to a service led by its chaplain at Fonthill Baptist Church. Law,this year’s Poppy Drive chair, said he had a lot of help including the guidance of Cliff Driscoll, last year’s chair and Remembrance co-ordinator. Bugler Tarrah Thorne, singer Emma Brule and piper James Carnegie provided the music and 613 Lincoln and Welland Regiment Army Cadets carried the flags and formed guard of honour. Fenwick and Fonthill volunteer firefighters joined the parades at their respective cenotaphs. Law said he was pleased with the response the Poppy Drive received from Pelham schools. Not only were poppies and poppy stickers handed out to students for services at the schools, but most schools purchased wreaths for their observances. “Remembrance is strong in the schools,” he said.
