Gardeners to showcase hidden gems BY WAYNE CAMPBELL

for the VOICE Hidden backyard retreats of flowers, trees, shrubs, bushes and walkways will thrill garden lovers this Saturday. The 12th Annual Pelham Communities in Bloom Garden Tour includes 10 properties in Fenwick, Ridgeville and Fonthill. It runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “We had many interested in showing gardens this year,” said Jessica Ruddell, the town’s recreation, culture and wellness coordinator. Now she is looking for volunteers to serve as “garden sitters” to assist visitors. Volunteers can contact her at town hall 905-892-2607 exten. 341. An unusual tour stop this year is a Christmas

tree farm on Balfour St. “In addition to Christmas trees, it has native trees, a pond, two miles of trails and natural wildflowers,” Ruddell said. At the Kinsmen Court in Fonthill, a group of properties share a seven-foot rock garden extending across their backyards. Most of the gardens are new entries. Some belong to committee members and one is a Trillium award winner. Committee chair Cheryl Petrie said the garden tour can give gardeners some new ideas. Petrie, for example, is very interested in learning about low maintenance gardening while others may look for unusual plant combinations and layouts. The tour takes garden lovers into quiet backyards. For

Communities in Bloom it is a major fundraiser. The committee sponsors the annual Trillium Awards program, which highlights outdoor beautification projects around residential, commercial and public properties. The committee, formed in 2000, holds community cleanup days each spring and fall to encourage residents, businesses and schools to spruce up their properties The volunteer group, with branches across Canada, promotes prettier towns, said Petrie. In the past, the committee has helped to finance Fonthill’s downtown clock and community heritage signs in Fonthill, Fenwick, Ridgeville, Effingham and North Pelham. Tour tickets are $10. They are available at the downstairs counter in
