Pelham celebrates Canadian style BY WAYNE CAMPBELL for the VOICE
Despite a continuing threat, it did not rain on Pelham’s 23rd annual Canada Day celebrations. A sprinkling and wind cooled the afternoon parade route while a misty drizzle softened the nighttime fireworks. Spectators in red and white lined up two and three deep along Haist St. to watch the parade. Parents, children, teenagers and volunteers filled Harold Black Park through the afternoon for food, entertainment and games. At night, thousands returned to watch the fireworks. “It just all comes together,” said town coordinator Jessica Ruddell, who connected town staff and the volunteer Canada Day committee. Pelham’s recreation director Vickie vanRavenswaay said Canada Day has become a Pelham tradition. “No one wants to let go of it,” she said about the

Young Canadians gather to celebrate Canada Day on Monday, July 1 in Pelham. Divino Mucciante/Voice Photo large turnout. Homeowners along Haist host gatherings of friends and neighbours to watch the parade and the fireworks, she said. Both Mayor Dave Augustyn, and, local MPP and leader of the Oppostion Tim Hudak praised the volunteer work behind the annual party. “The community is built and sustained by volunteers,” he said.
The town does receive a $12,500 federal grant from Heritage Canada to run the event, however, it is sustained by contributions from businesses, service clubs and individuals, said vanRavenswaay. Fonthill Volunteer Firefighter Association, for example, contributes $2,000 to the fireworks display. On Monday night, committee volunteer Leo Giovenazzo held out a
collection jug to help cover the $5,500 cost of the evening blasts. Fred Disher, this year’s Pelham Citizen of the Year was honoree parade marshal. He was also the actual parade marshal who organized it. The Fonthill Lions and Lioness, who handled the Canada Day barbecue added poutine and french fries to the menu. They were popular through the day, said
Lioness Eleanor Arbour. The Rotary Club of Fonthill, with help from its elementary and high school clubs, kept youngsters bouncing at its entertainment centre. Welland & District Humane Society held its ninth annual pet show. Riothill Studios and the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commttee staged AMPFest. Entertainers through the day included Lori DeLuca’s Dance Place, Arrows in Action, Jane Baker, Ivy Coast and The Madhatters. Emma Beaule of the 613 Lincoln & Welland Regiment Army Cadet sang the national anthem at opening ceremonies. The cadets participated in the parade and provided security. Pipe James Carnegie piped in celebrities. Sobey’s donated the Canada Day cake. Canada Day committee volunteers included Fred Arbour, Fred Disher, Lance Wiebe, Todd Looby, Giovenazzo, Tim Lalonde, Bill King, vanRavenswaay and Ruddell.
