Town Council approves CIP grant BY WAYNE CAMPBELL for the VOICE

A $20,000 grant to improve the façade and sides of 1440 Pelham St. will become the fourth Community Improvement Plan grant handed out by the town in downtown Fonthill. Town council approved the grant to the owner of the building, which contains a pizza restaurant, fitness centre and dental office at a special meeting Monday. It included four technical conditions to be met before the grant was released.
Coun. Gary Accursi, whose wife owns the building, declared a conflict of interest and left the council chambers during the debate and vote. CIP grants from the town are part of its downtown revitalization program. They help cover improvements of the fronts and visible sides of buildings in the downtown cores of Fenwick and Fonthill. Owners match the grants. Earlier CIP grants went to improvements to at Volcano Pizza, the construction of a new building at 1471 Pelham St. and a new façade at 1475 Pelham St. Coun. Richard Rybiak asked why a consultant
was used to assess the application. Chief administrative office Darren Ottaway said the technical expertise was required. Coun. John Durley asked why did it take months to deal with an application that was made in 2012. Ottaway said the process appear was too complicated and is being simplified into a checklist format to make it easier for applicants and town staff. Mayor Dave Augustyn said with a few buildings done already and with a smoother application process the downtowns can look forward to continued revitalization.

Second art tour for In The Orchard This spring, In The Orchard Programming For The Arts facilitated it’s second Orchard Art Tour for the community of St. Catharines which included children from the Machester and Rykert schools. It was a wonderful experience to give back to communities
in need and share the natural beauty of our home town with an energetic group of children from “inner city St. Catharines”. During ITO’s Orchard Art’s Tour, the students visited The Haist’s Family Farm on Canboro Rd in Ridgeville. They
experienced first hand how honey is made and tasted local unpatureized honey. They also visited a cherry and apple orchard where they were encouraged to run through a field of blossoms. They were delighted to see a working windmill and discussed the importance
of providing a cleaner environment for their generation. Afterward, the group returned to the studio to make an organic composition, using bark which had been stripped from pruned apple trees, while snacking on sweet apples from a local street side vendor.

leave. During that year, I had the privilege of discovering Pelham and meeting the many people who call this town home. And even after leaving, I was fortunate to maintain many of those relationships. As such, I am pleased to return to the editor’s chair, and I look forward to reconnecting, and telling your stories. Councils approve report about the Kame DAVE AUGUSTYN Mayor of Pelham Last week both Pelham and Regional Councils approved a staff report about the Ministry of Natural Resources’ (MNR) “last iteration” of the review of the Fonthill Kame-Delta Area of Natural & Scientific Interest (ANSI). The “Fonthill Kame-Delta” is our rare, 75-metre-tall landmark that was formed by retreating glaciers 13,000 years ago. At 6 km long, 3 km wide, and nearly 1,000 hectares, the Kame boasts the highest point in the Niagara Region and the headwaters of the Twelve Mile Creek. The Kame’s microclimatic and soil conditions create an ideal environment for tender fruit production including peaches, sweet and sour cherries, plums and pears. The Kame is the “hill” in both Fonthill and Shorthills and the “ridge” in Ridgeville. The MNR identified the Fonthill Kame as provincially significant in 1976 and as a Provincial ANSI in 1988. This ANSI designation restricts development for reasons of heritage, science or education.
In May 2009, the MNR recommended significantly reducing the ANSI’s coverage to “representative samples.” Pelham Council, Niagara Regional Council, Niagara Escarpment Commission, Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority, scientific experts, dozens of Pelham residents, Tim Hudak, our MPP, and Minister Jim Bradley, St. Catharines MPP, voiced opposition to these changes. As a result, in early 2010, Pelham received a strong commitment from Donna Cansfield, MPP, Minister of Natural Resources: “Please let me assure you that it is our intention to maintain and, where feasible, enhance the current ANSI boundary.” Despite that assurance, in 2011, the Ministry proposed reducing the ANSI to “Swiss-cheese” by failing to protect huge portions of the Kame – especially those areas that are under direct threat of new or expanded development. Again we expressed our significant concerns to the Minister. Last week, Ian Thornton from MNR informed Council about the 2013 proposed improvements to the ANSI boundaries. Mr. Thornton outlined how the MNR plans to expand the Fonthill Kame-Delta ANSI from 376 hectares to 412 hectares. Both Pelham and Regional Councils acknowledged
these 2013 boundary improvements but advised the MNR that we maintain our position that the Kame’s total morphology should be designated as ANSI. We asked the MNR to provide a rationale for not including all of the Kame under ANSI protection. Since this appears to be the final review of the Fonthill Kame ANSI, I ask you to write to the current Minister, the Honorable David Orazietti, thanking him for expanding the ANSI and asking him to continue to honour the commitment to “…maintain and, where feasible, enhance the current ANSI boundary.” Hon. Summerfest Kids Zone, ready to rock Once again, during Pelham Summerfest’s allday street party, Peace Park and its surrounding area will transform into a bustling hub of activity for the little ones. Beginning at 10 am and continuing until 6 pm on Saturday July 20th, this section of downtown Fonthill will be abuzz with nonstop children’s activities and entertainment; all free, thanks to generous donations from Meridian Credit Union, Niagara Inflatables, Pharmasave and McAvoy, Belan & Campbell Insurance & Financial Brokerage Services Ltd. This year the Kids Zone Play Area, sponsored

The Ridge Berry Farm Tea Room By WAYNE CAMPBELL For Hugh Scholaert and his wife Christine, the Ridge Berry Farm Tea Room is the retirement project of their dreams. It features a menu of local food products prepared by Beamsville-born chef Ryan Beck. Scholaert said they are modeling the tea room, its country market and kitchen as well as the farm operation behind it after small farms they saw when they lived in Switzerland. “We’re foodies,” he said with a strong interest a sustainable lifestyle and locally produced food. “Most of what we use in the tea room is from Niagara,” he said about his farm to table philosophy. The variety of foods grown in the area is what attracted the Scholaerts to the peninsula. “When we lived in Oakville we knew about the beaches and the wineries,” he said but they did not know of the range of crops and vegetation in Niagara.
The remnants of the Carolinian forest with hickory trees and sassafras came as special surprise for the couple that appreciates nuts and unusual foods. “Who knew this was in Niagara,” he said. He didn’t appreciate Ridge Berry Farm until he saw the rolling hills of rich sandy loam stretching behind the Ward Manor house and tea room. He called the setting “like a little Tuscany.” The Ridge Berry Farm Tea Room on Canboro Road has been a seasonal attraction in Ridgeville for years. The new menu still features High Tea with a variety of blends and adds dishes based on seasonal produce of the moment such as asparagus omelets with green salad and walnut dressing. (Menu is available on the website www.ridgeberryfarm.ca.) Scholaert said he hopes to extend the hours of the tea room. The couple wants to turn a section of The Ward Manor into Scholaert Cassel Galleries, a wine bar and art gallery, to display their collection of art glass works. They see Ridge Berry Farm as not only as
a seasonal luncheon outing for local residents, but also as an attraction for visitors to Niagara that will take them beyond the Falls and wineries. Scholaert said he believes their vision of farm-to-table food in the tea room, sale

Lafarge promotes safety Pamela Lugg, a graduate of The War Amps Child Amputee (CHAMP) Program, along with Champ Olivia Book, hosted a Safety Display for Lafarge Canada’s employee safety day, last Saturday. Together, they conducted a PLAYSAFE presentation for the employees and their family members and taught everyone how to spot the dangers in their own neighbourhoods. Pamela, 25, of St. Catharines and Olivia, 10, of Grimsby, were both born arm amputees and are well qualified to pass on the Safety message. They have met several fellow Champs who have lost limbs in accidents, and

The goal of this presentation was to educate the employees about safety and provide them with information they can take home for their children and grandchildren. Pamela and Olivia discussed The War Amps PLAYSAFE program, which was created when the Association began to see children enrolling in CHAMP who had lost limbs in accidents that could have been prevented. This year, The War Amps marks its 95th anniversary, as well as the return of more than 1.5 million sets of lost keys.

Picture Primer Photo tips By Brian Capporicci Week 8 The last few weeks, I have written about which DSLR you should buy if you’re looking to take your photography to the next level, as well as what lenses you may want to consider with your new DSLR. Today, I will go over a few of the terms that are used when discussing lenses - what they mean and why they’re important to you. Here are a couple of example lenses I have previously discussed: 50mm f/1.8 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 VR 24-70 f/2.8 Focal Length - This is the perspective of the lens - how “tight” or how “wide” the lens captures. The lower the number in mm, the “wider” the lens. The higher the number in mm, the “tighter” the lens. Generally speaking, a lower number means that you can take pictures of things closer up, while a higher number means you can take pictures of things that are further away. Zoom - If a lens has a dash in between the focal lengths (i.e. 28300mm) that means it is a zoom lens, which means that you can go from the widest focal length (28mm in this example) to the tightest focal length (300mm in this example). These kinds of lenses give you the most flexibility because you can “zoom” in and out without having to move yourself. F-Stop - This is how “fast” the lens is, or how much light it will allow to hit your camera sensor. Without getting into a whole discussion on aperture, let’s just suffice to say that generally speaking, the lower the number the better the quality of the lens (i.e. f/2.8 is better than f/4). IS or VR - This is “image stabalization” with Canon or “vibration reduction” with Nikon, and it simply allows you to photograph in darker situations because it helps to lessen camera shake by “suspending” the elements inside the lens. Book Depot Panthers win The Pelham Book Depot Panthers won the Ancaster Heritage Days tournament (one of the biggest in Ontario) this past weekend, dethroning the defending champ Welland Wizards 1 – 0 in penalty kicks in the tournament final. The Pelham team’s ability to play defense didn’t allow their opponents to score any goals on their way to claiming the crown. Pelham keeper Rachel Wayda played a perfect tournament was full value in all five shutouts. In the first game on Saturday
the Pelham team started slowly but defeated Kitchener 1 – 0 on a goal by Terin Hultink. In their second game the Pelham girls beat up on Etobicoke 4 – 0. Pelham led the game 1 – 0 at halftime and then exploded for three more goals in the second half. Kate Knafelc scored twice while Leanne DeKorte and Hultink added singles. Missing six regulars on Sunday, the Panthers only needed a tie to advance to the final and tied the St, Catharines Jets 0-0 in a hard fought battle. That set up the tournament
final for the Panthers to face their arch rivals, the defending Ancaster champion Welland Wizards. Playing six players short again, meaning very few substitutes, the Panthers battled through their exhaustion to play the Wizards to a 0 – 0 regulation tie. The Book Depot Panthers had several chances to salt the game away but were met by a good Welland keeper. Pelham took the Tournament crown in penalty kicks 1 – 0. The Book Depot Panthers are undefeated
in league play having disposed of Grimsby 5 – 0 with five different goal scorers Madison Smith, Hannah Nicholls, Sarah Bernier, Olivia Langan and Bethany Nicholls. Last week the Panthers defeated Niagara Falls Titans 2 – 1 in NRGSL league play on goals by Taylor Pattison and Gwen Gibson. After a few years of building, the team is coming together this year and beginning to gel.
