A year and a half ago a man walked into Fonthill Paint and Decorating asking for a gallon of paint in a colour that he said was in the store’s data base.

It wasn’t.

The customer was frustrated, and a bit angry, but the experience gave Chris Baxter an idea.

It was an idea that is not only unique in all of the world, but one that will change the home industry.

Baxter, who took over Fonthill Paint and Paper from his father several years ago, has created ColourBook, an online collection of everything, and everyone, that’s been in your house.

Baxter compares the site to a social media site for your house, noting social media gets into your life and your mind, but ColourBook gets into your house.

The paint cans stacked in the basement, the carpet swatches in the junk drawer, the stacks of paper from every contractor who has ever worked on the house –can all be eliminated, he explains.

ColourBook allows homeowners to create a colour sheet – listing everything from the exact paint colours used in each room, to the fabrics, flooring, siding, roofing and fixtures, as well as the manufacturer of each item, the retailer and installer.

The site is mobile friendly, he adds, so all home owners need to do when shopping for new towels or a new sofa is access the website while they’re in the store and know exactly what will match, and what won’t.

They can also access the information if they want to renovate, touch up paint or even build a shed that matches the house.

It’s not just for homeowners, adds Baxter, Every time a homeowner accesses the information, or shares it with friends, the company name and logo attached to the product is visible.

“It’s free marketing,” he says.

Baxter also points out the information is attached to an address, so if someone buys a house and wants to repaint a room, they access the coloursheet and can see everyone who has worked on the house –- another free marketing opportunity if the homeowner decides to choose that contractor.

“It is going to provide tools to every individual in new home construction to promote their business in ways never seen before,” says Baxter.

“The business side is the key to ColourBook. “It will change the way businesses operate in our industry.”

Another aspect of ColbourBook should interest all business owners, not only the ones in home design or building.

Baxter says he would like every business to create a coloursheet in ColourBook, listing all the paint colours and materials used in their public spaces.

When a customer at Fonthill Paint and Paper, for example, is wondering what a specific colour looks like on a wall, in real life, Baxter can drop the colour on a map and it will show him every location where that colour has been used, and he can send his customer to a local business to see the colour.

Another service of the site allows homeowners to choose colours for everything, from wall to floors and siding to shingles, by clicking on a colour they prefer in a photo of a specific material, ensuring the stone work on the front of the house is complimentary to the siding and shingles, he explains.

While Baxter hired a slew of computer programmers to create the site, and now has one programmer to manage it, he says it’s not about him or Fonthill Paint

First of summer concert series set for Thursday, June 20 March 17th, 2004: St. Patrick’s Day. It was on this day that Jonesy played their first show together as a band. Once the first note was played, the band and the crowd both knew that something special was taking place. This was no ordinary band. From that first show to every single one since, one thing has remained constant: Jonesy are not just a part of the party.....they ARE the party.

“Jonesy” is made up of five unique personalities from the Niagara Region. Each member has been involved with various musical projects throughout their lives, some starting at a very young age. The name “Jonesy” was guitarist Paul Lalama’s idea, respectively. No one really knows the true meaning of the name.

Paul himself might not even know! ...and these boys have CRED.

Scott Neilson, the powerhouse singer who many have compared to U2’s Bono, has shared the stage with big-name acts like Bryan Adams!! What does Jonesy sound like?? Take “The Killers”, throw in a dash of Coldplay, and top it off with a mix of U2 and Franz Ferdinand and you get the idea. “JONESY”, in a relatively short time, has already become a “buzz” word across Ontario. 2004 proved to be an amazing first year, and 2005 even better – as the band played it’s biggest gig yet – rocking for 50,000 people on New Years Eve in Niagara Falls.

Individiual Jonesy members have won many radio station home-grown contests including Mix.99.9 and 97.7 htz fm. Keep your ears and eyes on these boys. They have already worked

with some of the industries bestincluding David Kahne (Paul McCartney, Sublime), Arnold Lanni (Simple Plan, Our Lady Peace), and David Tyson (Celine Dion, Alanah Myles), who cowrote and produced Jonesy’s “Undone”.

The future looks very bright for Jonesy.

Jonesy brings the party to Fonthill on Thursday, June 20 to kick off the eighth season of summer concerts at Peace Park.

The concert kicks off at 7 p.m.

Once again, concert organizers are relying on event sponsorships as well as collections each week to bring the best talent to the

More questions, still no answers from town

Almost three months have passed since I wrote my last letter to the editor, questioning the dismissal of Craig Larmour, Director of Planning.

The only town response I have heard was that Mr. Ottaway told The Voice that there was “no reason”.

Two weeks later, an excellent letter was published in The Voice from Mr. Wm. Braun from Fenwick. This letter contained a wealth of information about recent town business.

I do know that when the candidate for assistant director of public works was

brought from the west to be interviewed, Mr. Larmour was assigned the task. Mr. Larmour concluded that his qualifications were lacking and recommended that he not be hired. The candidate was brought back for a second interview – Mr. Larmour again recommended that he not be hired.

He was hired anyway. I believe that this probably led to Mr. Larmour’s “no reason” departure. Such is the reward for honesty.

I do not have access to Mr. Braun’s “water cooler” information, but what I have gleaned from the street tells me that this newly employed person, having been

Site poor choice My condolences go out to the Riehl family on the loss of their son.

The area selected for the new skatepark is an accident or another tragedy waiting to occur.

Well hidden from police and the public where trouble could happen, let alone a drowning.

Without the skate park at Marlene Stewart Streit Park, in the past the pool as a haven for late night dips by intruders. Feces, bottles, etc. have been found by pool staff causing the closure of the pool for clean-up.

Parents sit and watch their children take swim lessons in that vicinity. Surely you can find a more convenient area for sktaeboarding.

Skaters won’t have to cross Hwy 20 or Pelham Street to get there. They don’t always carry their boards to cross the streets, let alone the steep hill to the park area. Foul balls from slowpitch could hit someone causing injury.

The arena all-purpose court would be a better and safer area.

A pay phone is available at the arena if needed for assistance of any kind.I would assume the Town would have to look into liability if the area was chosen for skaters. Be cautious of your site selection.

A candidate for the position of town planner was recently interviewed and approved for hiring. Information received suggests that he asked questions from Regional sources about the Town of Pelham and withdrew his application.

In 2012, the Voice published several articles about some homeowners complaining that a bylaw officer was being overly aggressive while trying to get their properties cleaned up. Council, I would think, must have backed her efforts or else

they would have reigned her in. She was rewarded for her efforts by being fired. The Voice lost the advertising business from the town which they had held for many years.

Does this sound like retaliation?

Are we seeing a new style of management imported from Alberta? Is our council on board with it? Should town employees be nervous?

These and other questions could and should be answered by the mayor in his weekly column published by The Voice.

Council members could also weigh in on the subject.

Lieutenant Governor to visit Pelham’s accessible parks The honourable David C. Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, will be visiting the Town of Pelham on Friday.

Onley will be touring the Centennial Park playground, one of Pelham’s fully accessible playgrounds. He will also have the opportunity to meet the Fabulous Fenwick Lions during their biweekly Fish Fry. Mayor Dave Augustyn and the

613 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps will greet the Honourable Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and introduce members of Council and of the Joint Accessibility Committee.

“Pelham is proud of our awardwinning accessible playgrounds and we hope everyone can join us as we welcome His Honour and showcase this great part of our community,” said Augustyn.

In 2009, Pelham received federal and provincial funding under Recreation Ontario (Ontario REC) and the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program in Ontario to replace all playgrounds and bring them up to current accessibility standards.

ABC Recreation Ltd. designed and constructed the new facilities, which incorporate adult exercise equipment and bike racks. In 2011,

Pelham received the Parks and Recreation Ontario Excellence in Design Award for the playground replacement project.

Local guiders earn Guiding’s top honour for Canada

BY SARAH MURRELL VOICE Staff In the past four years the Canada Cord has not been awarded to a Girl Guide.

This year four young women earned Guiding’s highest award, one of them from Pelham.

Hannah Beckett, of Pelham, and three other members of her Pathfinder group, which meets in Welland, have earned the special award this year.

The Canada Cord is an award that can be earned by Pathfinders and is about interacting with the community and other Members of Guiding while learning a wide variety of skills.

To receive the Canada Cord a Pathfinder, a Guide between the ages of 12 and 14, must complete several exercises which focus on first aid, leadership, citizenship, and community service.

“There’s a lot to it,” says

Beckett.

Along with Beckett, Welland Pathfinders Sara Dakin, Molly Boon and Mary Petriw earned the Canada Cord as well.

Dakin, who with Boon was one of the youngest Brownies to ever receive all of the Brownie level badges, said it was a goal she wanted to achieve so she set her sights on earning the Canada Cord.

Dakin also added her mother did not achieve her Canada Cord, so it was something Dakin wanted to accomplish.

For Beckett, her aunt Amy did get a Canada Cord when she was a Guide, so Beckett says when she heard about it it was definitely something she wanted to do.

“With grandma, we’ve achieved a lot,” said Beckett, explaining her grandmother is a leader of the group and they work on goals together.

“It was a goal. I definitely worked hard for it,” says Beckett.

Boon says she liked looking at the list of things to accomplish to receive the Canada Cord and then working out how she would get there, explaining she organized a Guide camp around first aid as part of her Canada Cord.

For Petriw, it was simply an accomplishment she wanted for herself, so she worked for it.

“I love working on badges,” says Dakin explaining why she enjoyed the challenge so much.

The four Pathfinders worked together, and with their fellow Pathfinders, so many of their group have some of the necessary badges as well.

The leaders, said Petriw, were also very supportive and helpful.

“It’s amazing how much they did,” said Boon.

Canada Cord is an accomplishment most girls take all of their Pathfinder years to accomplish, but these four are only in their second year of Pathfinding.

“It’s an accomplishment. An honour,” said Petriw.

Beckett pointed out her high school will give her two credits for earning the Canada Cord, adding it will definitely help put them ahead of other students as

they move forward in school and careers.

“It’s a good thing,” said Boon.

All four girls say they have stayed in Guides for so long, between eight and nine years, because of the friendships they made, the

feeling they can be themselves, and the experiences they’ve enjoyed – including those that earned them their Canada Cord.

“It was fun to experience it all,” said Beckett.

Garage sale for new, alternative learning school June 22 Construction has started at the corner of Regional Road 20 and Rice Road for a new, and very unique school, for Niagara.

The Julien School for Alternative Learners is designed for students with special learning needs.

Julien School for Alternative Learners has charitable status and is an accredited private school, with a curriculum that is in accordance with the Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines. The mission of the school is “to equip students to become confident, independent, assimilated members of their community.”

The school community is currently organizing a Tent Sale on June 23 to benefit the school.

“As a mother to a five-year-old with autism, this school is such a necessary part of the landscape of the Niagara Region.,” says Amy Sheehan. “So many parents like myself, who have a child or

children with autism require a school like this for our children because they cannot succeed and/or thrive in a typical school environment. Having a school like the Julien School is such a blessing and relief.

“With the help of fundraising it is the hope that the cost of tuition can remain at a level that is attainable for a large number of families,” added Sheehan on the importance of the upcoming garage sale.

The sale runs Sunday, June 23 at the school’s current location at 2601 Regional Road 20 (at Brick

by Brick Therapy in the plaza at the corner of Highway 20 and Cataract Road), from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Skate site chosen

The site for a skate park in Pelham, being constructed in memory of 14-year-old Isaac Riehl has been chosen as Marlene Stewart Streit Park (MSSP).

The original site for the park, made possible by Aviva Community funding and the support of the community, was Harold Black Park but a decades old agreement ended that plan two weeks ago.

The site committee went back to the drawing board and suggested MSSP as the new site, complete with a redesign of the park’s master plan and upgraded services.

At council June 17, where the new site needed the okay of councillors, some raised the concern of safety, since the park is accessed off of Regional Rd. 20. Both Mayor Dave Augustyn and Vickie Ravenswaay, director of recreation, explained the plans will included improved safety at the park, and noted the park has been used by other users, safely, since 1939.

Councillor Catherine King, who owns property adjacent to the park, said there are neighbours to MSSP and the noise of a skate park will echo in the pit.

“I’m very disappointed,” she said of the site choice.

Agusutyn rebutted, by noting a skate park is no louder than a ball game or pool fun, both of which already exist in the park, adding a skate park and velodrome have both been uses of the park in the past.

A plan, with improved access to the park, will be forthcoming, leading councillors to vote in favour of the new site.

KAISER, GORDON EVERETTE - We lost a very special person on June 10th. We will miss his smile, caring words, sense of humour, love for life, and the ability to touch people in a special way.

He leaves behind a trail of everlasting memories and smiles on the faces of so many. The skies are missing a pilot, the oceans a diver, the theatre a patron, a horse an owner, and the world a traveller. He brought the joy of home ownership to so many families through his role at Kenmore Homes, Mountainview Homes, and later his own company Kaiser Homes. Gordon faced a host of “medical challenges” in the last five years, but his smile and his positive outlook on life endured until the end. He would want us to thank all his “special friends” who helped him over the course of his many battles. You made everyday better for him, and we hope that he made everyday a little better for you. To those people who touched his life at Shaver Hospital and Linhaven, you taught us that growing old can be a beautiful thing being surrounded by so many caring people. His wife Laurie was not only his kindergarten classmate, but also his best friend and wife for 63 years. He was a special Dad, and a loving grandfather. He savoured every breath in life and cherished every moment until the end. Gordon would want us all to remember him by following his lead with a warm smile, and a determination to make each day a better day for someone else. Gordon leaves behind his adored wife Laurie, of St. Catharines. Cherished father of Stephen (Robin), Fonthill, Kristine (Nizar 2010) Akilie, and Kimberly all of St. Catharines. Funeral liturgy will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Fonthill on July 5, at 1:30 followed by a reception and celebration of Gordon’s life at Peninsula Lakes Golf and Country Club in Fonthill. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated and made to Hotel Dieu Shaver Health and Rehabilitative Foundation, or Linhaven Long Term Care Home both of St. Catharines.

The E.L. Crossley women’s 8 rowing crew has had a very successful season. It’s the crew’s last season together as many members are heading off to university next year.

To mark the milestone in their high school rowing careers the young women are celebrating their season by heading to England, to compete in the Royal Henley Women’s Regatta.

“Our coach thought it [competing in England] would be a good idea to end our season and high school rowing career,” says Shawna Griffin. “It’s our going away gift,” Part of the reason for wanting to compete in England, explained the team, is the Schoolboy -– traditionally a successful meet for Crossley’s rowing program – was cancelled due to weather.

“Schoolboy didn’t happen so this is unfinished business,” says Lauren Aiello.

“It’s closure,” added Maria Gearing, noting it will be the last time the crew will row together.

Five members of the crew are heading to U.S. schools next year to continue rowing.

Gearing is off to the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa for a Bachelor of Science, pre-med, as is her teammate Skylar Luttjehuizen.

Aiello will be at the University of Florida studying romance languages hoping to teach. Natalie Tavares will be at the University of Tennessee Knoxville studying accounting and Adrien Kawalek will be at Michigan State.

“It’s an amazing opportunity for us,” says Gearing, with the rest of the crew noting it is a prestigious meet and definitely an asset to their rowing and university careers.

Luttjehuizen noted the English rowing style is different than in North America, explaining the crews row side-by-side in an elimination style competition.

Only the winning crew from each race moves on to compete.

“It’s going to be a good competition,” said Gearing.

The idea that the crew could be out of the regatta after just one race definitely puts added pressure on them, they said.

Before the crew left they held a fundraiser at local stores to help cover the cost of the trip and were able to collect enough money to pay for the boat rental for the

week in London with the donated money. They set up ergometers in front of the stores and even raced against a few brave donors.

The athletes say they were truly overwhelmed with the generosity and the genuine interest that the public had about their venture.
