Skate park rejected BY SARAH MURRELL VOICE Staff Members of the Riehl family and the committee working to create a skate park in memory of Isaac Riehl are disheartened this week after learning the plan to build the park at Harold Black Park has been rejected. A letter received Monday by Pelham Town Council through River Realty Development Inc., informed the town that the Branscombe Family rejects the request to build the Isaac Riehl Memorial Skate Park in Fonthill’s Harold Black Park. Isaac’s parents, local skate boarders, an Aviva Insurance Broker, and representatives from Pelham’s sport clubs, local Service Clubs, and the Niagara Regional Police, used a comprehensive site identification and evaluation

process on February 21, 2013 to select Harold Black Park as the best suited location for the skate park. Council unanimously endorsed the recommendation on March 18, 2013. The Branscombe Family, through River Realty, donated the land for Harold Black Park in 1982. The land transfer agreement grants the lands to be used as a “public park” and allows structures like tennis courts, baseball diamonds, soccer and football fields, but prohibits all other structures or buildings – except for a retirement complex and home. These legal provisions became publicly known on May 14, 2013 at a neighbourhood and user skate park design meeting. “Despite the restrictions, a pavilion and a number of structures have been built at the See FAMILY/page 2

Crowds gathered around the Fenwick Flagpole over the weekend to celebrate the history of the village, as well as its iconic flagpole, and look to the future. Opening ceremonies for Fenwick’s 160th Anniversary celebration included remarks from Dexter D’Everardo, Mayor David Augustyn and organizing committee chair Sandee Matthews. Mark Shoalts, chair of the Pelham Heritage Committee, spoke to the historical importance of the Flagpole recognizing that it is the first flagpole in Ontario to receive a Heritage Designation. The flag was officially raised as the crowd sang O’Canada. At the 11th hour, to honour the veterans who paraded at the flagpole for their return home from both World Wars, the historic Lancaster flew over the celebration to the thrill of those gathered below.
