Year of the bylaw Short Hills hunt protested BY SARAH MURRELL VOICE Staff If 2012 in Pelham will be known for anything, it will likely be the year of the bylaw. Early in the year a recommendation by staff to grant bylaw officers “power of entry” onto private property stirred up a firestorm of bad feelings from residents who felt the bylaw went too far and infringed on their rights. From that point the bylaw issue snowballed and throughout the year there were several

residents talking to the press about their bad experiences with Pelham’s bylaw system, letters from residents outraged over possible changes to bylaws, and debate over a new site alteration bylaw. The Town council and staff did get the message and made, or are making, changes to the bylaw system to clear up some of the issues. Most notably, bylaw enforcement will now be under the leadership of Fire Chief Bob Lymburner and bylaw enforcement protocols are under See YEAR/page 2

E-waste collection BY SARAH MURRELL VOICE Staff Usually the three Pelham Peewee hockey teams are battling on the ice for supremacy in the game of hockey but this Saturday they’ll be battling waste for the environment. Players from the three local teams have joined together, dropped their gloves and are planning to collect outdated and unwanted electronics for recycling. “We feel that diverting these products from the landfill is a worthy endeavor and

worth Pelham Minor Hockey Association’s support and guidance,” said district league president Mike Rhora. The teams will be collecting unwanted and outdated electronics at the Pelham Arena on Saturday, Jan. 12 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Along with collecting items at the arena, coaches, parents and kids from the three teams have offered to pick up items for those residents who can’t get to the arena on Saturday.

PROTESTORS gathered at the Roland Road entrance to Short Hills Provincial Park in the early morning hours of Saturday, Jan. 5 to protest an aboriginal-only deer hunt. Sarah Murrell/Voice Photo In the predawn of Saturday, Jan. 5 dozens of protestors gathered at the entrances of Short Hills Provincial Park to voice their displeasure at an Aboriginal only hunt scheduled to take place within the park over the weekend. Although the protestors carried signs, chanted and blew air horns and car horns the hunt was carried out without any issues. The hunt was scheduled when members of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, a group of several Aboriginal tribes, requested to exercise their treaty rights and

hunt on provincial land. According to a Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) press bulletin issues on Jan. 31, the deer hunt allowed Aboriginal hunters to safely harvest deer for food. The hunt took place in the southeast corner of the park between the hydroelectric transmission lines and Holland Road where there is the least development and fewest trails, from a half hour before dawn to a half hour after sunset. The announcement of the hunt was met with protest by many groups including animal

activists, non-native hunters, and residents whose property back onto the park. Kowalski said the MNR is respecting the treaty rights of Aboriginals to hunt deer and their goal was to make sure the hunt went off peacefully and safely. “They are constitutional rights,” Kowalski said of the treaty rights. “We appreciate that and we are trying to adhere to that.” Jessie Wilkinson, one of the protestors at the park entrance Saturday morning, said she See DEER/page 5
