Local photographer uses talents to help homeless pets BY SARAH MURRELL VOICE Staff Fonthill photographer Bryan Caporicci’s latest product showcases the energy and personality of our canine companions. Shot in his studio, with colourful backgrounds, the portraits capture people’s pets in a way that lets the dog’s individual traits shine through. “They’re fun and cute,” says Caporicci of the photos, noting he wanted something bright, colourful and fun when he decided to add

pet portraiture to his portfolio. The photos and storyboards he produces for clients show the dogs at their best, in great lighting, relaxed and happy, photographed by a professional. It’s something he wanted to bring to dogs who don’t have a family - yet. Caporicci explains when he introduced the Petis Amis portraits about two months ago he thought it would be a great way to help the Lincoln County Humane Society. The society usually takes their own photos of dogs

BRADLEY, a German Shepherd Rottweiler mix, is one of the dogs photographed by Bryan Capporici to help the Lincoln County Humane Society find new homes for dogs in their care. up for adoption at the shelter, and the resulting photos don’t really “sell” the dog, says Caporicci. Dark dogs don’t show up well in photos, some dogs lose details in their coats or faces when photographed, he said, but shot in a studio with professional lighting, dogs can be shown off at their best. Caporicci says he usually takes a few minutes

before each session to play with the dogs to get them familiar with him and the setting - resulting in better photos. He photographs three dogs currently up for adoption per week, and provides the photos to the Humane Society for use on their facebook page, on the website and in other marketing. Caporicci is also posting the photos on his

facebook page, asking his fans to share them with their friends, and so on. The more eyeballs that see the dogs, he says, the better chance they have of finding homes. “I love dogs, they’re so fun, energetic and playful,” says Caporicci, saying he’s having a great time photographing dogs in his studio, and pet owners are responding. Since introducing Petis

Amis Caporicci says he’s photographed pets who have been dognapped from their owners, brought to his studio, and returned without their owners knowing - all so the pet owner can receive a beautiful storyboard of their pet for Christmas. For those unwilling to resort to dognapping, Caporicci offers gift certificates.

Running group beginning in Jan. When Natalie Boyd moved back to her hometown this summer she noticed something about runners in Pelham - they run alone. Boyd, an avid runner for about 10 years, took part in a running clinic with a group in St. Catharines after she moved back to Pelham from Toronto. She says she began to wonder why she needed to go to St. Catharines, and pay money, just to run with other runners, so she started thinking about having a running group here, in Pelham. “Why not?” she asks, noting a casual running group would bring people together, make it easier to get out for that run, allow runners to share knowledge and motivation, and be fun.

“I find it easier to run with people,” she says. “I just want to get something going.” And Pelham has so many nice places to run, Boyd says she’s surprised there aren’t any races here. Boyd says she isn’t looking to be a coach or organizer of anything formal, she just hopes to get a group of runners to join her a couple of times a week. She met a lot of people who not only share the interest of running, but who have become lasting friends, says Boyd, and she’s hoping to meet other runners in this area. Boyd is planning one evening run a week as well as a Sunday morning run.

The distance for each run will vary, she says, depending on everyone’s goals, and there will be people running at different paces. She says she’ll help ensure everyone is running with others of the same pace. For Boyd, it’s an opportunity to meet people in town with similar interests, but says it’s also an opportunity for runners to share goals and enjoy a fun, social run. The first run will be held Thursday, Jan. 5 at 6:30 p.m., beginning at Peace Park at the band shell. Sunday morning runs will leave at about 9 a.m. Anyone interested in joining the run is welcome to take part, or contact Boyd for more information at skirunrow@yahoo.ca.

On the hot topic of sidewalks and pedestrian safety This week will mark the official start to winter and with that the hot topic of sidewalks will rear its ugly head. We are interesting people in Pelham. There are those who want more sidewalks, those who insist on utilizing these pathways for vehicles meant to be elsewhere and those who want to avoid them but, by doing so, put their own safety at risk by walking along the side of the road when we hear that speeding throughout Pelham is another hot topic. On top of all this there are those who want to navigate sidewalks without being knee-deep in snow and those who prefer to don ice skates

and head to a rink rather than practice their skills on a treacherous, icy path. Not being quite sure what to think of all this, a number of thoughts entered my head but first and foremost, safety. Not only throughout the year but particularly at this time when most are stretched to the limit. There are seasonal festivities to be enjoyed and along with it come the concern of drinking and driving, shopping to be finished and a multitude of details to be attended to. People are pressed for time as the clock ticks down to Christmas and the pressures felt often translate in to hasty

actions on our part or reactions to someone else’s inaction or poor choice. Speaking of choice, on a recent trip to a local retailer and with Christmas, at that time, just weeks away, you can imagine what came to mind when the person I was shopping with called out, “What colour do you want?” I thought, what colour what do I want? We’re in the seasonal section for goodness sake. Eeeks, I was meant to choose which colour of snow shovel I would like. Where did the idea I wanted a snow shovel come from? Certainly not words spoken from my mouth! Yes, snow shovels not only come

in a variety of shapes and sizes with a variety of features but now one can choose a colour. Much to my chagrin, I chose a happy yellow one and can only hope that I won’t need to get it wet and dirty but the inevitable is bound to happen. I have been trying to get excited about my new treasure because after all, to clear a sidewalk one must have some tool that aids an individual to push, lift or throw the blessed white stuff from the surface of the path so as to ensure our sidewalks are clear of danger to pedestrians. Then it donned on me the gift giver was really thinking of the town’s

by-law which requires sidewalks be cleared within 24 hours of the snowfall. Well, I am starting to warm up to the idea that I now have a user-friendly, appropriate instrument with which to comply. Not only is it a happy colour but it also has a metal strip along its bottom edge making cutting through crusty snow and ice more efficient. Thinking about it now I guess the gift makes perfect sense so I can only hope when I received it I didn’t appear ungrateful because it is only the thought that counts and obviously there was thought put in to it. However my friend,

I must be out of practice or something. Or maybe having two kids is a lot more difficult than parenting just one. Possibly I’m too old to be running around after two kids. Maybe Pelham is busier than it used be this Christmas. Could be all of the above. Whatever the reason, I feel like I have too much to do, not enough time to do it in and as a result nothing is done well. For example, this week’s paper features a headline about the Town’s Snow Angel program over a story about a new shoe store in town. Yeah, that wasn’t supposed to happen. In my defence - Matthew had minor day surgery on Tuesday, which is our regular press day, and I was rushing to get the paper laid out early. We all know what happens when we rush. You publish headlines that don’t make any sense, that’s what. I know it’s a

flimsy defence, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. I’m also using it for the other small errors in last week’s edition blanket excuse. A huge apology to the ladies at Strut - they have no idea how absolutely fabulous the Voice is and I went and made a really bad first impression. Anna and Tanya, on the other hand, made a great first impression on me - fun, outgoing, funny, shoe-crazy women who know how to pamper your feet and make you look fabulous in the process. (My Christmas wish list now includes Strut). And it has been a busy Christmas season. It started before December, with stories about upcoming Christmas related events, then the food drive and Christmas in Pelham, the various appearances of Santa in town, the many donations to Pelham Cares and other

charitable organizations by our generous townfolk, wrapping up with the parade last weekend. And all of it - I have to say - has shown me how wonderful the holiday season in a small community really is. I’ve written about it before, usually in the context of shop local, but Christmas in this community truly is the stuff Christmas cards and television movies are made of. I talked to Luciana Gearing back in November about her natural, handmade wreaths which she creates using everything grown on her property. They’re gorgeous and I ordered two for my home after giving the one I made with Luciana to my mother-in-law. The day I went to pick up the wreaths was a Saturday and both boys were with me. Matthew spent a good part of the afternoon feeding sheep,

goats and chickens from his hands, trying to catch ducks, collecting eggs, walking through the woods, carrying fire wood and playing basketball. I couldn’t get him to leave. And the Gearings didn’t seem to mind at all that we were still there after several hours. What an open, welcoming family and what a great way for a little boy to spend a sunny winter day before Christmas. I missed Christmas in Pelham, and a few other events that weekend, because the entire family, myself included, had some kind of stomach bug. But, if previous years’ events are anything to go by it was likely fabulous and I’m sorry we missed it. We didn’t miss the parade, however, and we all had a blast! For the first time in a very long time I was in the parade with The Voice’s

giant mailbox collecting letters to Santa. It is such a different experience to be in the parade rather than watching from the sidelines. Usually I’m seeing the folks on the floats but last weekend I got a chance to see the folks on the sidewalk. It was a lot of fun seeing how everyone was enjoying the parade and having a great time. Of course the boys were on the sidewalk watching with Grandma and Matthew was loving all of those trucks! Back at the office I typed up the letters to Santa before forwarding them to the North Pole. That in itself is a great Christmas activity for me. Truly the heart of Christmas is the children and reading their words to Santa makes that ring even more true. Our front page photo this week is from Santa’s annual visit to A.K. Wigg school. This is also an

Sarah Murrell event I look forward to all year - I think I love Santa’s stories about the North Pole as much as the students do. This photo, for me, expresses what Christmas is all about - kids, love, magic and wonder. This will be our last edition of the year, so may I say this, ‘May you have the gladness of Christmas which is hope; The spirit of Christmas which is peace; The heart of Christmas which is love.’ See you in 2012.

Letters to the Editor

Compliments to Kinsmen Fifty years is a long time for anything to last - cars; clothes; appliances; work; friendships and even marriage. Fifty years is a magical number for our local Kinsmen and for the seniors of our little community. It is the number of years they have provided Pelham seniors, with their Kinsmen compliments, a delicious Christmas dinner, stimulating entertainment, wonderful MCs and yes, even Santa

himself. Red suit, boots, beard and all. To top it off they have been active in our community for 60 years. What a wonderful accomplishment! How proud we should be of this dedicated hardworking group of volunteers. Once again it is my great pleasure to thank these wonderfully organized men (and women) for a fabulous time at the Old Town Hall on Dec. 13. My mother, Molly who is now 98, especially enjoys

the Celtic music and this year the Celtic Fiddle and Country marvelous musicians were joined on stage by a second group of four ladies, “Mes Amies” for a grand finale on stage which was enjoyed by all including our mayor. My friend Rachel, who is our designated driver, my mother and I look forard to next year and another treat from our Kinsmen. As always I say compliments to the Kinsmen. Shirley Lazareth Fonthill

Thanks for nice surprise The Christmas season can be a very busy and stressful time of the year. And I have met lots of rude and impatient people so far. You sort of expect this as one of the “benefits” of the season. That is why I could hardly believe a nice surprise on December 14. Walking my dog, a car stopped by and a little girl handed me my Christmas present, an orange safety vest and Tim Horton’s certificate. Apparently she is seven years old and she was worried about my safety on the road. I was so incredibly surprised, that I did not even get the chance to ask her name, before her Mother drove away. I don’t know their name, or where they live.

I am sorry little one to worry you, I am fine, but thank you and your Mom for this random gift of kindness. It is little girls with big hearts, that make Christmas so special. I would love to know you in person, but I am not even sure if I would recognize you. I can assure you, that your gift of thoughtfulness will stay with me for the rest of my life. I will pass on your Mothere Teresa’s card and gift of love to somebody and hope it will make their Christmas a little happier. Just like you made mine. Have a Merry Christmas and keep the kindness in your heart forever. Anonymous

October 28. We had the BEST turnout for the pumpkin carving! We also had a Costume Contest for those who wanted to participate! When the skate ended, the MYAC handed out candy to the skaters and pumpkin carvers. Thanks to all who came out and participated! During the beginning of the year, we, the 20112012 MYAC, got together to discuss and plan for the

upcoming year. We have some great ideas planned for this year. We have long term goals for this year, which are to have a Christmas in Pelham night in 2012, a White Night in 2012, a Community Centre including a Skate park, and better Transportation. The Town Participation Day, where the town participates in cleaning Pelham up, went awesome! We had a great

turnout from Pelham residences to clean up the MYAC’s spot. There was very little garbage in our spot, and all of the groups together collected about 140kg of garbage throughout Pelham. We might even extend our adopted territory to clean more of Pelham! Thank you all who helped out, and continue keeping Pelham beautiful. All in all, we have a great year ahead of us, and for

NAOMI, a senior kindergarten student at Glynn A. Green, tests the icing before using it to build a gingerbread house, which requires much concentration. A GLYNN A GREEN CHRISTMAS

A GROUP of students at Glynn A. Green dedicated to helping others have been very busy during the past few weeks. The group, We Are The Change, participated in Random Acts of Kindness month in November, receiving stickers to recognized their acts with teams competing for stickers and a pizza party. In December the students collected hats and mittens for a Mitten Tree, collected non-perishable food for Pelham Cares, and purchased a gift of hope for a family in East Africa through Free The Children. These gifts include clean drinking water, immunizations or animals for families to raise. Sarah Murrell/Voice Photo

Local Cadet Corps very close to taking Vimy trip BY SARAH MURRELL VOICE Staff For the past year members of Fonthill’s 613 Lincoln and Welland Regiment Army Cadets have been planning and fundraising to make a trip to Europe - not only to mark the 95th Anniversary of Vimy but to honour members of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment. Captain Leo Giovenazzo explains the trip to Vimy Ridge is something Captain Lynn Giovenazzo has thought about doing with the cadets for a long time, so they decided

to go this year, the 95th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The cadets will be at the Canadian National Vimy Memorial to take part on the 95th anniversary celebrations in April of 2012. They also plan to visit the town of Bad Zwischenahn, a town the Lincoln and Welland Regiment helped to free during the war. Prior to the trip, said Giovenazzo, each cadet will be researching one of the many Lincoln and Welland Regiment soldiers buried at Bad Zwischenahn. Once in the town, the cadets will place

Canadian Flags on the soldiers’ graves to honour their sacrifice. There is just one problem with the plan, says Giovenazzo - one cadet is not yet sponsored to go on the trip. Giovenazzo explains about half a dozen cadets were told they would not be able to take part in the trip because they are part of a two-cadet family or the family simply couldn’t afford the $2,700 costs. Over the past year the corps has been fundraising to help cover the costs of the trip - applying funds raised to individuals or a general pot and

prioritized funding based on corps attendance and other criteria. Now, with just weeks left until the deadline - 33 of the 34 cadets in the corps are signed up for the trip. “We thank the community for their support,” says Giovenazzo, adding the corps is very close to being able to take the trip as a whole unit and it would be a shame to leave one cadet home. The corps needs $2,700 by Dec. 31, 2011 to allow every member to take the trip. The group is planning more fundraising in 2012, including an electronics

recycling depot at the Legion on Jan. 14, accepting old electronics that may have been replaced over the holidays or are outdated. The problem is that

New recreation program for young children BY SARAH MURRELL VOICE Staff

Like most chefs Brian McLeod was working long days in the kitchens of some of the best restaurants in the world when he realized his children, now four and six, were being raised by the babysitter. He and his wife made the decision then that one of them would work parttime, from home, to be with the kids. McLeod walked away from a successful career as an Executive Chef to become a life skills coach, by way of soccer, to young children. “We needed a change as far as family goes,” he says. “I decided to do something that I could work around the kids and see my family.” Little Kickers fit the bill perfectly. Little Kickers is a soccer program for children from 18 months to age 7 that was developed in the UK 10 years ago. As the local franchise owner, McLeod can work around his family’s schedule,

BRIAN McLeod is looking forward to bringing Little Kickers, a non-competitive sports program for children ages 18 months to 7 years, to Pelham. Sarah Murrell/Voice Photo spend time with his kids and be active. The program teaches basic soccer techniques and life skills in a vibrant, group play environment. Social skills such as listening, sharing, taking turns and teamwork are included in the program that places as much emphasis on simple learning concepts like colours and numbers as

it does on fine-tuning a child’s basic balance, agility and co-ordination. “It’s not just about chasing the ball into the net,” says McLeod, explaining there are hundreds of games at his disposal to play with the children. “It’s about colours and numbers.” With Little Kickers, he adds, it’s not one ball and 10 kids. If there are 10

kids in the class, there are 10 balls and every child has a chance to touch the ball and be successful. “I’ve seen the change in my kids,” says Stefanie, Brian’s wife, explaining her sons are not only basking in their sense of accomplishment, they’re promoting that great feeling in other children. “Kids like to be successful,” says Brian, explaining the noncompetitive nature of the program combined with the life skills learning, allows every child to find success. “It’s a good program in that way.” Stefanie, obviously enthused by her sons’ reactions to the program, says the kids see the coach acting like a kid with them and they thrive. Stefanie, who continues to work in the restaurant industry while her husband plays soccer with kids, says the change has been worth it for her family, and the program is a great opportunity for other families with young children. “You’ve never seen anything like this in Niagara before,” she says.

Little Kickers currently runs in St. Catharines however McLeod, who lives in Pelham, is hoping to begin classes in Fonthill at the end of January. Classes run for 13 weeks, once a week for 45 minutes each session. Classes run year-round, indoors in the colder months.

Program fees include a one-time administration fee, taxes, and jersey for each child. Check out www. littlekickers.ca for more information, visit Little Kickers on Facebook at Little Kickers Canada or call McLeod at 289-6905411.

U10s win bronze The Pelham Niagara Dental Centre/ Miles Kulik MHC Mortgage Services Panthers under10 girls basketball team defeated Port Colborne 28-16 to win the bronze medal at the St. Catharines Rebels tournament. Pelham defeated Stoney Creek 23-10 and lost 27-10 to Hamilton Transway in pool play before losing 18-15 to Hamilton Blessed Sacrament in the semifinals. Top performers for Pelham were: Ally Sentance, 30 points, nine rebounds and nine steals; Kaley Demont, 25 points, 11 rebounds, 14 steals and three assists;

Tess Puchalski, six points, 10 rebounds and 19 steals; Jordyn Britton, six points, 10 rebounds and six steals; Lexia Poitras, four points, three rebounds and five steals; and, Sydney Grummett, two points, 13 rebounds and two steals. Tess Capra, two points, four rebounds and four steals; Emma Melito, one point, five rebounds and two steals; Jessica Acaster and Abbey McCulligh, one rebound and two steals; Bethany Langelaan, two rebounds; and, Emma Kulik, a rebound and a steal. The Panthers are now 7-7 overall.

The Rose City HoNets used their youth and better conditioning to take the game away from the DJBs. They outscored the DJBs in three out of four quarters [1(2011), 2(27-16), 4(24-18)] using the fast break and 3-point shots (EIGHT) to wear down their elder opponents. The DJBs did have a big third quarter and outscored the HoNets 23-22. Despite a gamehigh 33 points, 5 steals and 13 rebounds, rookie JoJo Duran couldn’t do it all for the DJBs. But as always, it was a good run!Quinto Borghesi was a real challenge for the DJB defence as he drove, faked, shot and rebounded, over and over again and scored a teamhigh 23 points. He added 2 steals, 5 rebounds and

an assist. Matt Rynberk had 19 points (including two 3-pointers), 4 steals and 5 rebounds from his point guard position. Blair Ferguson also had 19 points (including one 3-pointer) but it took him a game-high 24 shots. His fast-breaking irritated the DJB defenders. Brendan Thompson, who had a career game scoring 31 points against the DJBs last season (December 3, 2010), reversed the digits to score 13 points this season. His total included three 3-pointers, 4 assists and 5 rebounds. Jeff Pullam was the big playmaker for the HoNets garnering 7 assists along with his 8 points (one trey) and 2 rebounds. Tyler Jacobs and Dax Gordine rounded out the scoring for the HoNets scoring

7 (including one 3-ball) and 4 points respectively. Rookie JoJo Duran had the best game of his young Niagara Basketball Career scoring a gamehigh 33 points, pulling down 13 rebounds and committing 5 counts of larceny on the HoNets. His teammate Gino Palermo (the G-Unit) had his twohanded, floor-to-ceiling manoeuvre firing on all cylinders from underneath the basket scoring 14 of his 16 points using that method. Owner/sponsor/ coach Rob Neill seemed to have his old shot going as he scored 7 points. Sophomore Allan Choi scored his baskets while flying through the air after grabbing rebounds. He finished with 4 points. NBA veteran Joe Seliske, his silver hair flowing in

the wind scored 4 points on a classic “jumpless” shot and a pretty 18 footer (just inside the arc). Rookie Ian Harrison who called dozens of plays from the tattered DJB playbook ended up scoring 2 points in the second quarter. Senior statesman Ivan Willmore used one of his classic hook shots from just in front of the basket to score 2 points in the final frame. Ivan added 11 rebounds. Carm Infantino was busy setting up many of JoJo’s baskets collecting 6 assists. Despite some physical difficulties, Barclay Walker played a dogged style of defence all night preventing the HoNets from hitting the century mark. The Rose City HoNets are now 23 in Tier play while the DJBs are now 2-4.

Atom Tigers hunt for points on the road

The McDonalds AtoMc Tigers faced another busy weekend with 3 road games. The Tigers handled Welland#1 in a one-sided match. Wyatt Glancy lead the way with a hat trick & 2 assists. Tyler Scott netted 2 goals (1A). Single goals were scored by Harmon Narbonne (6As), Jack Obdeyn, Elijah Taylor (2As), Drew Colangelo (1A), Elliot Song (1A), Owen Darling (4As) & Nicholas Longo (1A). Mitchell Karnay & Dan Durkin picked up

a pair of helpers each and Carter Nicholas made some highlight-reel worthy saves on the way to the victory. Welland#2 were the Tigers’ next opponents. Welland slid one past goalie, Tyler Scott, early in the first frame to take the lead. Harmon Narbonne opened the floodgates late in the 1st, as he evened the score with the help of Colton Morrison. Two more Tigers’ goals found their mark before the end

of the period: Drew Colangelo scored from Elliot Song & Owen Darling, & Dan Durkin found the netting from Narbonne & Song. A Welland goal early in the 3rd period was answered by Elijah Taylor from Jack Obdeyn & Colangelo and an empty netter by Dan Durkin from Elliot Song & Carter Nicholas put the stamp on the win for Scott. The Tigers’ final game found them facing off against NOTL#3. Tyler Scott

was the 1st the light up the scoreboard from Nicholas Longo. NOTL responded immediately and again, in the 2nd period. In the 3rd, Harmon Narbonne pulled the trigger on 2 quick goals (from Wyatt Glancy & Owen Darling, and from Dan Durkin & Scott) to regain the lead. Another NOTL goals evened it up and goalie, Carter Nicholas, had to settle for the tie. Great teamwork was the first star of the weekend!
