EDITORIAL

Celebrating the Very Best of Africa! Eight years ago, after successfully publishing the Voice News Magazine for 10 years, our editorial board decided to introduce the Voice Achievers Award. The purpose was clear from the very beginning; to recognize men and women, individuals, corporate organizations, governments, nongovernmental institutions and friends of Africa. It is good to understand the genesis of all that we are doing as it is not for attention seeking or personal gain of any of the board member or the Publisher. The motto of our publication is ‘Actuated towards Africa’s advancement’. We have discovered that recognition and acknowledgement of peoples’ effort is invaluable, and that status is much more worth than money. Appreciation increases peoples’ commitment, loyalty, enhances performance and generates greater success in whatever field of endeavor they are engaged in. So whether it’s a red carpet event or some other type of recognition, it helps to build people up and let them know or hear it that their little contribution or effort is acknowledged and recognized. The best accolades are given at funerals when the person is dead and no longer could receive it and give a smile of appreciation. There have been critics of our choice of candidates, again this is subjective to comments, we have criteria with which we use to accept a candidate, this is not a voting contest or demanding you to register and get as many votes as possible to be recognized. In fact we say it is an outstanding award for your contribution in whatever you are doing towards the advancement of Africa. It could be on communal, national and international level, it does not matter but once people can recognize what you are doing as contributing to their advancement, you are a candidate for acknowledgement and recognition someday. Having said this, it is worth to note that we have received endorsement from different people in society, that the award has truly inspired them to greater heights. This was the setout objective from the first award. On 17th November 2017, we would be celebrating our 18th anniversary edition of ‘The Voice magazine’ and the 8th edition of ‘The Voice Achievers Award’. The event has become a sought after gathering of Africa’s 4

outstanding individuals and businesses and we would continue this Award to celebrate our own Success Stories. If you have not attended one yet, this is an opportunity to attend, at least to kill your curiosity, we encourage you to attend. One person told me they would Pastor Elvis Iruh pay thousands of dollars to go Editor-in-Chief and collect an Oscar but we struggle to pay 50 euros to be part of an audience to recognize their fellow Africans. Is this not a surprise and probably a shock? But it’s the reality. The awards are not given out for money, we spend our money to put this award ceremony together, to celebrate ourselves and for that we want to thank all the individuals and African businesses who continue to support us despite the economic challenges; you are the award winners because you make it happen. Nollywood Europe Golden Award (NEGA) for The Voice magazine Last month, I was surprisingly invited to this award event in Frankfurt Germany to be recognized for our contribution to the promotion of Africans in the Diaspora. I received the award on behalf of the past and present staff of this magazine for their contribution in making this possible. The purpose for which we started the magazine was to give a voice to once a people who were voiceless and 18 years on, this effort is being recognized and applauded, it is brings a great feeling. This award has inspired me and the team to continue to serve the public to the best of our ability through the Voice magazine. Therefore we are glad to send to you the October Edition of the magazine with various new items covered and to remind you again to be part of the great celebration slated for November 2017. The theme for this year is ‘Reinventing Africa’s future now’. There will be a panel of discussants, come and join and let reason together for the future of Africa. God bless you. Pastor Elvis Iruh Editor-in-Chief

Raila cannot continue holding Kenya hostage, - President Kenyatta says

President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that the opposition cannot continue holding Kenya hostage with unending conditional demands over the rerun elections in the country. The President said opposition leader Raila Odinga was misguided, leading to constant demands and shifting of goalposts that delivered no benefit to the Kenyan people. President Kenyatta said Raila does not want an election because he knows the vast majority of Kenyans will reject him again.“Mungu ni yule yule na waKenya ni wale wale” (God is still the same and Kenyans are still the same),” said the President when he addressed supporters in Kiambu. “That is why he does not want an election.” He urged residents of the populous Kiambu County to be ready to turn out in large numbers and vote for him again on October 26, the date set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for the repeat presidential poll. President Kenyatta called on Kenyans to continue maintaining peace and to reject any attempt to create tensions. “We are not people of violence or threats. We have left insults and threats to other people,” said the President in reference to constant derogatory language that opposition leaders have become well known for. President Kenyatta had earlier attended the funeral of former Nairobi Mayor Samuel Mbugua Wainaina, father of Rachael Shebesh, the former Nairobi Women’s Representative and a close ally of the President. Dear Editor,

Uhuru is a benefactor of fraud election in Kenya Why is President Uhuru afraid to have the electoral body reformed? The answer is simple, he is the benefactor of electoral theft in Kenya, twice in a roll now, he was stopped by the Supreme Court and for that reason he is upset with the Chief Justice of the country, for he refused to be compromised. President of Uhuru should stop threatening, he is in office in acting capacity now. You can only disapprove this by ensuring IEBC is cleaned from these crooks whose errors have proven costly to Kenyans, but it seems Mr. Uhuru and his party don’t care how IEBC conducts the repeat election even if it’s held tomorrow. How and why? An indication you don’t care of a credible election. You can’t run Kenya by regarding opposition leaders and their followers as foreigners. You must listen to their concerns and participate in good faith in talks for a fair play in polls. Kenya is bigger than any individual or a party. This is not about Raila but Kenya as a nation. By Jim J. Mwaniki Naiorbi, Kenya

Love or hate Kanu: He has set things in motion!

F

or 35 years, Anthony Enahoro, Afenifere, Ben Nwabueze, OPC, ọhaneze, MEND, MASSOB, Awolowo, and other reputable Nigerians tried and begged for restructuring, the north rebuffed them. Nobody even took them serious. Nobody listened. Then a little known rabble-rouser ran a pirate radio station from his matchbox room in Peckham. In three years he made the hitherto unfashionable and impossible thing central to our national politics. El-Rufai was in London recently talking restructuring. They fought in Ondo in a meeting on restructuring, there is a Yoruba declaration. Northern elders are shifting ground while pretending to grandstand. You don’t have to agree with his style, I also don’t, but you must be one pretentious clown if you don’t acknowledge that Nnamdi Kanu, loathe or love him, has achieved what all those people and organizations have been fighting for over 35 years without success. He did it in three years. The mass movement he inspired became a huge threat to the establishment. They had to take him out. Sadly, ethnic bịas and hate from those who accuse him (rightly too) won’t let folks see or acknowledge what this man has done. The fire he lit up will definitely lead to something tangible 10

www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com

happening this time. People aren’t ready to take no and platitudes for answers again. This much you can concede to Kanu without letting the hate you often accuse of him of get the better of you. Dead or alive, the little rabble-rouser from Afara-ukwu Umuahia has secured his place in history. In the final analysis, immortality isn’t how long you live. It is how long your name is remembered, and for good or bad, Kanu will be remembered for ages as the man that took aim at the very heart of the Nigerian political establishment and they rolled in the tanks to quell him. That is something you must concede. When history is made, the protagonists rarely know the consequences of the chain of events they unleashed. But posterity will always remember. Kanu has been many things to many people- uncouth, brash, hateful, and obsessed, a charlatan, a clown, a messiah, a saviour, a fraud, etc. We can’t seem to agree. We must agree though that he has also been an agent of change. Should the current fever on restructuring succeed, Kanu should take credit for birthing it. By Anozie Ebirim London, United Kingdom ·

Feedback (Page for your letters) Igbos are their own problem in Nigeria! “Did the Yoruba go to war when the June 12 1993 Presidential Election won by their illustrious son, Chief MKO Abiola was annulled on June 23rd 1993 on a sheet of paper by IBB? Did the Yoruba go to war when Abiola’s wife Alhaja Kudirat Abiola was murdered in Lagos in the morning of Jun 4 1996? Did the Yoruba go to war when the winner of that historic election was poisoned on July 7 1998? Did the Yoruba go to war when those who killed Abiola imposed Obasanjo on them as President in 1999? Did the Yoruba accept Chief Ernest Shonekan when IBB made him to head the interim government in 1993? The Yoruba rejected OBJ and Shonekan because this unique race has never been slaves to public office and yet they have remained number one in Nigeria in almost everything. This is wisdom and strategic thinking at work. Those of us who have lived in Yoruba land for years should not only learn how to wear Aso Ebi, eat Ewedu soup or dance Owambe, music. We must have also learned other unique things from them like sharing property to both male and female children, religious tolerance, ethnic tolerance, transferring legacies from generation to generation. Do you know that APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s wife is a Christian? Do you know that former Governor Fashola’s wife is a Christian? We can learn a lot from Yoruba. The Yoruba too can learn from the Igbo in areas of thinking home, business enterprise, selfhelp, apprenticeship, etc. A Yoruba woman, a Pastor, Mrs. Eunice Olawale Elisha of the Redeemed Christian Church of God old NEPA Road Phase 4 Kubwa, Abuja, was killed by unknown persons on Saturday morning of July 9, 2016, while preaching the gospel around 5.30am. I have followed the reactions on the internet and the Yoruba do not behave like the Igbo. They have been speaking but not preaching hate. They have called for the culprits to be fished out, prosecuted and punished. If Mrs. Eunice Elisha had been an Igbo, hell would have broken loose. There would have been insults and abuses. But the Yoruba are not the Igbo. This is civilization. This is strategic thinking. I hope our people can learn from this. Civility is not a sign of weakness. He who fights and runs away lives to fight another day. To have ears is not to listen, to listen is not to hear, to hear is not to understand, to understand is not to put to practice. I know that writing this may not get me many friends among the Igbo, but it always gets me the right ones” By Jeo Igbokwe CEO Efulefu group of companies and sons Lagos, Nigeria

Dear Editor, CONGRATULATIONS BROTHERS

HOLLAND

TAKUMBENGS

AND

OUR

I am so proud of 9 remarkable ladies who got together at the square in front of the International Court of Justice in The Hague to become part of history recently. They braved the rain and the cold and compelled tourists, Dutch people and dignitaries, including security forces of the ICJ to take notice of them including our men folk who supported us valiantly. People surrounded us as we carried out our protest march against the atrocities in our motherland and they wanted to know more. Security officers could not believe how brave the women were despite the weather and march with bare shoulders and chests while they were warmly packed in security rain-resistant attires. They became very alert when they heard of why we were doing this and joined us to wish our motherland freedom from arbitrary killings, rapes, abductions etc. Some of you were sick that day, yet you came. Some left sick children at home, yet you came. Thank you. And for all the men who not only stood behind us but told the world our story. What gallant warriors you are. Am so so so proud of you!!! Holland has great potential to become an important European player in the change we need for our motherland. These remarkable Takumbengs from Manyu, Mezam, Ndian and Bui counties demonstrated that - as did the valiant men who winged them. Kenya may face constitutional crisis over election impasse - Opposition, ruling party have entrenched positions on rerun - Constitution makes no provision for election not being held Kenya is lurching toward a constitutional crisis as a standoff deepens between the two presidential candidates and their parties over how to manage a rerun of last month’s botched election which was annulled by the Supreme Court in Kenya. It is the first time in the history of this country that they would be facing such a dilemma. Both sides have entrenched their positions: Raila Odinga’s opposition coalition has called mass protests against holding the election without reform of the electoral commission. The opposition is demanding that the electoral commission is overhauled before the vote, while President Uhuru Kenyatta’s ruling party, Jubilee party rejects any changes to the authority and says the ballot must take place by the end of October. In fact as of the time of going to press, the government has fixed 26th October 2017 for the elections and the opposition do not agree on that. The impasse raises the risk that the election won’t happen at all, or the election would happen without the opposition not participating and

Raila Odinga insist the IEBC must be reformed before any rerun election can take place!

what happens to the result of such an election. So it is a situation that the Kenyan constitution doesn’t envisage or make provision for as it is now. “If the parties retain their hard-line stances, there will be 12

President Kenyatta wants election held under same IEBC on 26th October 2017

a constitutional crisis says Charles Kanjama, managing partner at Muma & Kanjama Advocates. “It’s very important that all political actors show sobriety and realize that the country can’t afford their political games, endangering our peace and security.” The uncertainty about the election outcome has unnerved investors in Kenyan assets, with yields on its Eurobonds rising 44 basis points since the September 1st court ruling to 6.46 percent. The shilling has weakened 0.3 percent against the dollar in the period. Previous disputes over elections in Kenya have led to violence, the most serious being in 2007, when clashes left more than 1,100 people dead and forced 350,000 more to flee their homes. That resulted in growth slumping to 1.7 percent in 2008 from 7.1 percent a year earlier. The rerun became necessary after the Supreme Court annulled the vote after finding the Independent Electoral & Boundaries Commission failed to conduct it in line with the constitution. The new vote is clouding the outlook for an economy that’s already slowing and risks tainting its reputation as one of Africa’s top investment destinations. Kenya is a regional hub for companies including General Electric Co. and Coca-Cola Co. The commission has yet to announce how it will deal with the opposition’s demands to reconstitute its management. Nor has it responded to the court’s detailed written judgment delivered on September 21st that faulted the commission for declaring the vote result without the correct documentation. The protests by Odinga’s alliance may escalate if Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party carries out a threat to curb the judiciary’s powers. The president says he will not allow dissatisfied persons to derailed the government and he will use the full force of the law. The approach should be different at least all parties involved should involve in the dialogue rather that giving a press brief to the other party of the opposition. Right now, it is obvious that the government and the opposition are not operating on a common ground.

‘What is the way forward for Kenya’ While President Kenyatta has said he’ll abide by the Supreme Court ruling, he’s criticized the decision, labeling the judges as “crooks” and their judgment “a judicial coup.” Jubilee senators plan to propose changes that will make it almost impossible for the court to void future elections and the ruling party is using their power to interfere in the activities of the judiciary, in fact is it an open intimidation tactics now that the judiciary will be reformed while the same government does not want to listen to appeal or demand for the electoral commission to be reformed as it is presently constituted. “All parties need to sit together and formulate a way forward says Tushar Kanti Saha, a professor of law at Kenyatta University in Nairobi. “But parties don’t seem to want to meet.” So Kenya may be heading towards another crisis like that of 2007/2008 where they would need external intervention for the principals to listen. While Raila Odinga demanded that new ballot-paper suppliers be selected, the commission said that it will stick with Dubai-based Al Ghurair Printing & Publishing Ltd., whose contract for last month’s vote was challenged in court before finally being allowed. In a letter to the opposition, the IEBC also said it’s retaining the services of Paris-based OT-Morpho to provide two electronic systems for the rerun. The United Nations Development Programme offered to procure ballot papers and results forms for the poll, which the IEBC has asked the Treasury to consider, commission Chairman Wafula Chebukati said in the letter. The vote would be managed by a “fresh presidential election implementation team,” he said.

Constitutional Objection

While the Supreme Court didn’t find any wrong doing by any of the IEBC’s staff, Odinga says commission employees including the chairman, c h i e f executive officer and eight others should be r e m o v e d for their complicity. If the Oct. 26 vote does go ahead, the opposition may resort to a constitutional clause to ensure the vote is invalidated. The constitution states that the election must take place in all 290 constituencies, and it only has to ensure the vote doesn’t happen in two or three of its strongholds to seek another annulment, said Samuel Mohochi, executive director of the Kenyan section of the International Commission of Jurists. “If the IEBC was to continue preparing as if its business as usual, it would be demonstrating it’s operating without due regard to the constitution,” he said. “It would be an unfortunate scenario because then the stalemate will persist.” Kenyans are in a cross road and there seem not immediate solution to resolve the crisis, the only prayer now is that it does not resolve to another nationwide violence like that of 2007/2008. Restructuring Nigeria by Pius Adesanmi

N

igerians are all talking about restructuring. Now, that is funny. There are two types of Nigerians: those in government and those awaiting their turn in government. Forget all the talk about the size and potential of Nigeria’s economy. Forget all the talk about business, entrepreneurship, innovation, and the rise of a vibrant new demographic of inventors defying the odds to crystallize into a 21st-century transnational elite. That is all puff and powder for there is really only one business in Nigeria and it is called government. Everybody is just really waiting for and on government. Every other sector and sphere of Nigerian life and all the players in all those private spheres and sectors are merely waiting on and for their turn in government. In Nigerian life, there is no creativity, no aspiration, no vision, no mission, no genius, and no dream beyond “joining government. The sum total of national life is nothing but an endless footsy playing between those within government and those without, hoping to cajole each other to be let in or scheming to shove others out and replace them. Either by election or appointment, a Nigerian has no greater definition of success and fulfillment in life than a political office; no matter how paltry and insignificant. This atrocious national sociology of course has consequences. It is at the centre of the Nigerian tragedy. At the personal and national levels, it stifles growth, initiative, and development because the citizen and his nation are defined exclusively by prebend. The citizen destroys all regenerative and innovative possibilities because his creative energy has only one purpose: profit from government pretend (if he is already in

government) or aspire to profit from government prebend (if he is awaiting his turn in government). Nigeria is the only place where the path to building a global business brand, powered by genius, innovation, creativity, entrepreneurial spirit and drive can be abandoned midway to serve as a Special Assistant to a Special Adviser on Miscellaneous Matters in the Presidency. The owner of a flourishing innovation hub or a growing e-commerce outlet 18

www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com

will drop all that creative energy and suddenly become a Special Assistant to a Governor or a Senator. In Nigeria, do not be surprised to wake up to news that Dangote is abandoning the Dangote Group to run for even governor. Instead of joining Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos on a panel in Davos, do not be surprised to hear that the owner of Konga.com or Nairaland has accepted an appointment as a Special Assistant on New Media to a state governor. In essence, any Nigerian great news on the innovation front is only great until government appointment happens to it because every other sphere of agency in Nigeria is tentative and aspirational in a move towards government and mediocrity and corruption. Take a look at Rochas Okorocha. He has been busy ruining Imo state on the platform on APC and change. His destruction of Imo is a greater tragedy because it is collective and affects our fellow citizens. However, there is also his self-destruction. He had a robust business brand that could have become an African brand on its way to the global level had he continued to devote his creative energies to it. The Nigerian thing happened to him and he decided to aim for the sun of Aso Rock Villa before ending up with the consolation moon of Government House in Owerri. It is true that many of these people abandon potential global brands for life in government because of the belief that they will loot with impunity, and divert public funds and government patronage to their businesses. They forget that all their stealing and looting has never taken any of their businesses to a truly global dimension because no reputable global brand can be built on a foundation of such brazen rottenness. The money they steal and infuse into their businesses is only Pyrrhic victory. Obasanjo Holdings is one of the greatest beneficiaries of loot, corruption, nepotism, and government patronage in Nigeria. Baba stole Nigeria black and blue and poured everything into his business. Obasanjo Holdings is not a recognizable African brand, let alone a global brand. It is a local champion in a local field where Baba is doing gragra and harassing people.

When he gallivants the world stage, it is because he ruled the largest concentration of black people for 8 years and not on the basis of his entrepreneurial brand. In Davos, he will have to book an appointment with Zuckerberg and Bezos. There is also of course the story of Orji Uzor Kalu’s Slok – another innovative business brand that government office happened to and destroyed. The business people are not the only class affected by this Nigerian disease. Generations of the country’s brightest minds go to government, when they leave government, they do not return to any worthwhile ventures and activities that could uplift the country because they understand that life in Nigeria is divided into two strict phases: life in government and life spent awaiting life in government. I live in a part of the world where people have time for short spells in government appointments before returning to other spheres of nation building. Academia is a very popular destination for people after government office. They come and join us in training the next generation. Look at journalism and mass communication schools in the US and Canada. Very often, people quit influential government spokesperson positions to become Deans or Chairs of such schools or programs. They don’t have to be academics. Universities negotiate with them on the basis of their profile and experience. You come to Nigeria and you get Reuben Abati – a brilliant first class mind that any school of journalism or mass communication in Nigeria should be privileged to engage as Dean or Chair. What is he doing? He is roaming social media to maintain relevance in preparation for any possibility of returning to government in 2019. One of Nigeria’s best minds now understands that there is only life in government and life spent awaiting a return to government. The Right Reverend Wendel Simlin, also known as Reno Omokri, falls into this category. Before he discovered the tragic duality of Nigerian life, he was actually a bright mind on the rise in the United States. Now, he too is roaming social media, carefully curating his nuisance value to maintain

visibility ahead of the possibility of a return to government in 2019, accompanied by fellow vermin, Femi Fani-Kayode. Think of Abati as Head of Mass Communication in Unilag; think of Omokri in some innovative new program in any of our Universities. No matter what you think of them, they would serve Nigeria’s future excellently in such stations. Sadly, they are like fish out of water, unable to conceptualize agency and nation building outside of the sphere of government crumbs. I have used Abati and Omokri to illustrate the crematorium of talent and innovation that Nigeria is. Once you leave government, you are pretty much useless to Nigeria because your brain is colonized by the singular desire to return to government. You cannot even sustain a business after life in government. Look at Senator Smart Adeyemi, thrashing around like somebody high on paraga because there is no life for him outside of government. He is desperate to return. I have been preaching that the restructuring of the polity is not something that should be done outside of the restructuring of the psychology and the socializing narratives which frame the Nigerian mind. And we need to revamp civics to achieve this mental rewiring. You may well get your Biafra Republic. You may well get your Oodua Republic. You may well get your Arewa Republic. However, I pity those three putative Republics for they are going to be peopled by psychologies and mentalities shaped and nurtured by Nigeria. If you must have your three separate Republics, that is fine. I am a supporter of legitimate claims to self-determination and maybe I have read too many books to subscribe to the silly myth of the indissolubility or indivisibility of any nation-state that Professor Osinbajo and the Nigerian elite are peddling. However, do not go to Biafra, Oodua, and Arewa and continue to believe that life outside of government is life not worth living. Remember: that tragic sociology destroyed the Nigeria you are fleeing. Restructure your psychology before you leave. As for me and my house hold, we shall remain proud Nigerians.

Mrs. Buhari’s commences empowerment training for 1000 women in Bauchi

The Wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari has urged women to live up to their calling as mothers and acquire some entrepreneurial skills; saying empowered mothers take better care of their families. She was speaking at the flag-off ceremony for the Skills Acquisition Programme organized by Future Assured Programme in Bauchi state, Nigeria. She gave the advice through wife of the Governor of Bauchi State, Mrs. Hadiza M. A. Abubakar, who represented her at the occasion, who said the training is a testimony to Mrs. Buhari’s commitment to help women attain self-reliance and a fulfilment of her promise to spread empowerment among Nigerian women. The flag-off took place at the Multipurpose Indoor Sports Hall, Bauchi, targeting 1000 beneficiaries made up of women and youth across the 20 Local Government areas of the State.

At the ceremony, Governor of Bauchi State, Alhaji M. A. Abubakar who was represented by the Executive Chairman BACYWORD, Barrister Ahmed Farouk Gwadabe, expressed appreciation for the efforts of Mrs. Buhari to rid women of poverty. He restated the need for women to embrace entrepreneurship and utilize the opportunity provided to them through Future Assured Programme. The skills being taught are Beautification, food processing, baking, tie & dye, insecticide production, body spray, perfume and car air freshener. Partnering with Future Assured in this project is the Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development and Bauchi State Commission for Youth and Women Rehabilitation and Development (BACYWORD).

TWO MEN HOLD THE WORLD HOSTAGE:

Trump vs Kim Jong Un

President Kim celebrating another successful test launch

threat capabilities have grown significantly over the years, with 18 missiles fired since February 2017. The last one launched on July 4 – being an intercontinental ballistic missile, with capabilities claimed to reach “anywhere in the world”. With so many unverifiable claims, no one can be sure of what to expect of North Korea. It has cut itself off the world scheme of ordination. The only weapon of the United Nations of approving further sanctions on North Korea against its missile program with China’s support seems not to move them a bit. United States Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley said: “We should not fool ourselves into thinking we have solved the problem…Not even close. The North Korean threat has not left us. It is rapidly growing even more

It is no more a joke or fun to listen to these two world leaders dangerous.” who are hell bent on bringing the world to a standstill with All that the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with his their relentless war bickering. It all started with simple scientists and technicians; of the DPRK Academy of Defense threats of war but has gradually dragged the world to the Science, did after the test-launch of the intercontinental brink of the third world war; which seems imminent if ballistic missile - Hwasong-14 was to post a photograph of these two principals are not tone down their war rhetoric soonest. North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un seems armed with cannons ready to explode at the slightest provocation; and on the other hand is President Donald Trump of United States of America who seems not to appreciate diplomacy at all. There stands Iran on the sidelines with Russia and China playing the devil advocate. These are perilous moments to live in. As the saying goes, “when two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers”, and with Africa obviously caught in the midst of this entire fracas, it may be left to bear the brunt of this imminent confrontation. President Trump calls North Korean leader a robot man Sadly, when the African leaders advise these principals to let minds prevail, like recently did, the President of Nigeria or President Mugabe them posing with smiles all over their faces as witnessed in who expressed dismay at President Trump’s approach; the July photo released by North Korea’s Korean Central their voices fall on deaf ears. The relationship North Korea’s foreign ministry rejected the decision of the between the U.S. and North Korea has deteriorated United Nations to impose further sanctions on Pyongyang. significantly over the years. The last administration under former President Obama tried to manage it, until President Trump ascended to the throne about eight months ago. From the first day of his presidency, it has been one threat of war to another. While on the other hand, North Korea’s missile

The Asian country added that it would continue developing its nuclear weapon program without delay. “It is a fatal miscalculation if the countries (in the United Nations) would even think that they can delay or hold in check the eye-opening development of the (North’s) nuclear forces even for a moment,” a spokesman for North Korea said. On the other hand, President Donald Trump vowed to unleash “fire and fury” against North Korea if the latter continued threatening the security of the United States or its allies. “They would be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen,”

“irreversible mistake making it inevitable” that North Korean rockets would hit the US mainland. The US president, the foreign minister said, would “pay dearly” for his speech, in which he also said he would “totally destroy” North Korea if the US was forced to defend itself or its allies. the platform of the United Nations; the only body that could check their excesses, to challenge themselves to a lethal contest. We expect the remaining super powers like France, Germany, Russia to take a different approach and bring orderliness to this madness of two. What is the basis for their quarrel? We presume, to fire up their egos as super powers; brandishing the might to threaten world peace. Like the saying goes, “when you drum for war, you may not be there to witness the disaster it brings”. Trump and Kim Jong should burry their pride and let us focus on how to make the world a better and safer place to live in. The effect of climate change is already causing enough disaster and they all seem not to pay any attention to this.

North Korea warned that it was considering a strike that would create “an enveloping fire” around Guam, where the U.S. has a military base. It added that President Trump’s remarks were a “load of nonsense” President Trump promised to increase defense spending by “many billions of dollars” because of North Korea and “other reasons having to do with the anti-missile shields.” At the same time, Trump told reporters that his warning of bringing “fire and fury” to North Korea wasn’t “tough enough”. “If anything, maybe that statement wasn’t tough enough,” Trump said, refusing to state how much further the statement should have gone. Then came the United Nations 72nd Assembly where President Trump focused his speech on North Korea and its leader in which he referred to him as “rocket man on a suicide mission”. Speaking on behalf of the North Korean leader, Ri Yong-ho’ told the General Assembly that “insults” by Mr Trump were an

EU Condemn and caution Nigerian military, rejects the declaration of IPOB as a terrorist organization

ollowing the brutal and inhumane video of the Nigerian army against the invasion, terrorism, and killings of IPOB members, which has been going viral over the internet in the past two months, the president of the EU commission, Mr Jean-Claude Junker has openly made a serious touching statement as well as warning the Nigerian security personnel against their ill heartedness and unprofessionalism in handling democratic issues and the rights of the people. Junker directed serious caution towards the Nigerian Military chiefs stating that they must employ every democratic tenet in handling issues that concern disgruntle and agitated communities. “It is the people’s right to agitate and make a request from their government; self-determination being a right enshrined in the United Nation Charter. “The people of BIAFRA have every right to request for a referendum, they have been in this struggle for a while now

and have never killed or fired a shot but have instead become the victims of attacks and murder. “The entire EU hereby condemn the brutal attack on IPOB members and leadership under the pretentious disguise of a military exercise (Operation Python Dance) Nigerian military is warned to adopt democratic tenets in handling citizens. “The EU will not sit and watch things go undemocratic in the largest economy of the West African region”. Furthermore, Mr Junker has promised to raise the issues concerning the people’s request for a REFERENDUM among the caucus of the EU. He further stated that the Biafra request for a referendum is no different from that of the Catalonians and the Britain. The Nigerian government must rise above insubordination and handle issues with every precept of maturity and democracy.

African delegates living large at UN Assembly in New York.

T

rending on the social media in the past weeks is how African delegations to the United Nations General Assembly were busy shopping while their countries leaders were in serious meetings at the headquarters. Most unfortunate are those from African countries classified as world’s poorest nations. Their UN delegates were freely spending at the most expensive shops in New York. Among diplomats spotted included were delegations from Swaziland; they were caught on camera walking out of high-end retailer, Bergdorf Goodman. The women had Bergdorf Goodman shopping bags, though they said the items inside were just gifts. But from whom? According to United Nations data, nearly 70 percent of Swazi people survive on less than $2 a day. The nation has one of the highest HIV / President Faure Gnassingbe under pressure from his people to reform AIDS prevalence rates in the world, with 18 percent of the population HIV positive. Despite those struggles back home, numerous members of the Swaziland U.N. entourage are staying at the luxurious Mandarin Oriental Hotel where it costs over 1,000 dollars to spend a night. Also staying at the Mandarin Oriental were members of the delegation from Togo. According to U.N. report, 2.4 million Togolese citizens live on less than $1.25 a day. Before the world event, there has been protest in Togo against the government, the people demanding reforms. Diplomats from Gabon were staying at the Plaza Hotel, where rooms go for a $1,000 to $15,000 a night, arguably as an oil country, they can afford to spend outlandishly. Nigeria’s delegation is keeping five vehicles parked outside the Pierre Hotel where the cheapest room is about $800 a night or roughly what most Nigerians earn in two years. At the Waldorf-Astoria, where rooms are between $800 and $9,000 a night, the delegation from Mali, a country where 4.6

King Mswati 111 of Swaziland lives on his poor people million people are battling starvation in a recent U.N. report, yet their delegation could afford this luscious spending. Mali is the third poorest nation in the world with a poverty rate of nearly 87 percent. To be fair, not every poor nation spent so much for hotel accommodations: Members of the Tanzania delegation were found staying at a Doubletree hotel in Midtown. A credit to their no nonsense President; who will not allow their scarce resources to be wastefully spent on hotel bills abroad. Although it may be unseemly for diplomats from poor countries to live ostentatiously during their stays in Manhattan, advocates for business, point out that there is an undeniable upside to much of the diplomatic extravagance – the boon for New York City’s local economy. “I don’t think it is really up to us to moderate the type of spending that comes from other countries. That’s their business,” said Nancy Ploeger, president of the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce. “What I’m concerned with is the economic impact on this city. I like the money. I want the money!” None of the permanent missions to the UN from Togo, Swaziland, Gabon, Mali or Nigeria returned calls or emails relating to this story to confirm or deny but it is obvious they know the damaging effect of their actions; but who cares? Nonprofits that monitor developing nations are also becoming increasingly sensitive to the issue of third world rulers spending lavishly abroad. The group “100 Reporters” is actually holding a contest asking New Yorkers to snap photos of UN diplomats spending ostentatiously. One estimate put it that the ruling classes of third-world nations divert as much as $1 trillion from their developing economies to spend and invest in the U.S. and other Western nations for their private use only. “The real underlying motivation for the movement of so much money out of developing countries is the hidden & often illegitimate accumulation of wealth,” said Raymond Baker, executive director of Global Financial Integrity, a nonprofit watchdog that monitors capital flows into and out of impoverished countries. “This is about getting rich secretly and not having to distribute those funds locally,” Baker said. Africa in the western media for all the bad reasons again.

German elections 2017: Angela Merkel wins fourth term but protests erupt at surge of far-right AfD in German politics.

C

hancellor Angela Merkel clinched an historic fourth term in Germany’s election last month but her victory was clouded by the hard-Right AfD party winning its first seats in parliament. A development that Angela Merkel says she will listen to far-right AfD voters’ concerns in her effort to form a new government.

state parliaments, such as in the northern state of SchleswigHolstein where it currently operates. Ms Merkel could alternatively try to form a minority government if she is unable to secure the formal backing of other parties – with coalition negotiations expected to take weeks or even months to reach a working agreement. The result is a huge blow for Mr Schulz, a former president of the European Parliament who became SPD leader earlier this year and once hoped to unseat Ms Merkel from the Bundeskanzleramt. His appointment as leader in March saw the SPD spike in the polls, but his honeymoon quickly faded. Speaking after exit polls were released, Ms Schulz attacked “right-wing extremism” of the AfD and told supporters assembled in Berlin: “What is depressing for us is the result of the AfD.

Merkel, who after 12 years in power, held a double-digit lead for most of the campaign but surprisingly scored around 32.9 per cent of the vote with her conservative Christian Union (CDU/ CSU) bloc. Although her nearest rivals, the Social Democrats (SPD) and their candidate Martin Schulz, came in a distant second, with a post-war record low 20.8 per cent. He was the disappointment of the election as there was very high expectation of him Chancellor Angela Merkel wins for the fourth time to perform much better than he did. Angela Merkel will be returned as chancellor for the fourth straight term. In her victory address, the German chancellor pledged to address the concerns of people who voted for the anti-Muslim and anti-immigration AfD. Meanwhile, the centre-left SPD, the current coalition partners of Ms Merkel’s CDU and a titan of German politics for 150 years have hit a historic low and it is the social democratic party’s worst showing since the Second World War. Small parties in general did well in the election and were all up on their 2013 results, with the liberal FDP re-entering the Bundestag with 10.5 per cent of the vote, the Greens on 9.5 per cent, and the left-wing Die Linke on 9 per cent. Turnout and voter participation also appears to have climbed since the previous election, which was held in 2013. SPD leader Martin Schulz immediately ruled out going back into coalition with Ms Merkel, leaving the Chancellor likely to go into coalition with the liberals and the Greens – the so called “Jamaica Coalition” because the colour of the parties matches the country’s flag yellow, black, and green flag. Such a coalition has not been formed in German at national level before – though it does sometimes occur in Germany’s 42

“For the first time with them there will be far-right representation in the Bundestag.” One of the largest cheers of the night from Mr Schulz’s address was his announcement that he would drop the coalition with Ms Merkel – a pact that has cause rifts within the SPD. Mr Martin Schulz failed in his bid to become German Chancellor Mr Schulz himself did not serve as a minister in the government, he says, because he wanted to replace Ms “We will have to win back those who voted for the AfD by Merkel as chancellor. solving their problems, by taking on board their concerns In a speech following the exit poll, Ms Merkel attacked “illicit their fears in some cases but also by demonstrating good migration” and said “internal and domestic security” would be policymaking. one of the focuses of coming months – an apparent nod to the “In recent months we have fought for a Germany that we want AfD’s priorities. to live in well, and now we need to set the course to ensure that She told assembled CDU supporters: “We got where we wanted in five and ten years’ time it’s still the case.” to be, we wanted to be the strongest power. We’ll chase them. We’ll take back our country and “After 12 years of being responsible for the government, the our people.” result we had is really not something you can take for granted. The campaign was dominated by the AfD’s messaging on the Naturally, there’s a challenge facing us for the future, and that is refugee crisis and Muslims in particular, with the party’s antithat the AfD has made it into parliament. Islam posters littered all over German cities and towns. The closest the Bundestag has come to having far-right MPs since the Second World War was the Deutsche Rechtspartei, or German Right Party, a hard-right national conservative outfit that attracted former Nazis and won five seats in the 1949 federal election. It lost those seats at the next election. Other than the AfD, the most notorious contemporary German far-right party is the National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD). The NPD has previously won scattered representation in local state parliaments but has failed to ever win any seats in the Bundestag.

ADVERTORIAL

INVESTMENT IN REAL ESTATE: EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES FOR NIGERIAN DIASPORAN WITH KAYODE-OBEMBE & CO LTD Real Estate Real estate is the modern term for land, as well as any physical property or improvements that are permanently affixed to the land, including houses, buildings, landscaping, fencing, wells, etc. Investment in real estate therefore, involves the purchase, ownership, management, rental and/or sale of real estate for profit or private gain. It is about more than just finding a place to call home, but has increasingly become a common investment vehicle to grow and nurture wealth. It is interesting to note that an overwhelming proportion of today’s and past world billionaires made their fortunes through real estate and in most cases, the journey to wealth starts from just one property and the portfolio keep growing. Have you ever wonder why property owners were called “lords”, or as now more colloquially known as “landlords”? It’s because owning properties gives power and financial freedom. There must be a reason why every rich person you know owns multiple properties. Even Donald Trump today remains a billionaire thanks to his real estate fortunes as most of his other businesses have declared bankruptcy. It is particularly gainful to invest in real estate in a growing and volatile economy like that of Nigeria as the real estate provides a safe hedge and store of value against inflation. The low rate of inflation in the country is positive for those that have real estate as assets because as the inflation goes up, so does the value of your real estate. Associated Risks However, in spite of the compelling opportunities that exist in investing in real estate, it also comes with its own associated risks. The most fundamental risk in real estate investment in Nigeria is the possibility of falling into hands of fraudsters. It is therefore important that you deal with the right people and invest in properties with genuine titles when investing in Nigerian real estate. After ensuring the integrity and genuineness of the people and properties with whom you are dealing with, the next important factors to consider are location, location and again, location! The rate of your success in real estate investment is determined largely by the location where you are putting your investment. If you are ever to choose between a good location with a higher price or bad location with a lower price, consider the former: When considering good location, one of the key factors to look out for include: area with appreciating value, axis on the line of current development, nearness to other properties 46

www.thevoicenewsmagazine.com

with current or prospective values and good transportation. It is also important to look at the locations in regard to the future, rather than that of the past for higher, long term returns. It is also financially wise for prospective investors to consider investing dormant capital that’s sitting in low yielding Bank accounts into real estate. It may be a tough slog the first few years, but somewhat later, you’ll probably wish you had bought more. Investing in real estate is also becoming an increasingly favorable option for those eying retirement and who want to take advantage of real estate’s return potential and its abilities as a portfolio diversifier and inflation hedge.

“

“Everybody can own a property here, call us or email us for more details.... THE PLAN IS EASY TO REACH” Why you must consider investment in Real Estate. Other reasons why you must consider investment in real estate includes: • Hedge against inflation. You only hate inflation if you don’t have an asset that is inflating. Inflation is increasing the values of your properties hopefully faster than any input costs and the costs to operate the asset. Some people used to think back in 1996 how ridiculous it was for anyone to pay N50,000 to purchase a plot of land in the Ajah area of Lagos State. Today, the same one plot of land is over N50M. Inflation is a powerful economic force that’s difficult to stop. You would rather want to own inflating assets than always be a price taker. • Rise on growing economy. When times are good, assets tend to inflate quicker due to higher employment, rising wages, and rising corporate profits leading to more demands on properties. Real estate tends to be a major beneficiary during a bull market. Forget about protecting yourself against inflation, owning real estate is a gainful opportunity to make

money with inflation. If there happens to be hyperinflation, your cash is devaluing rapidly whereas your real assets start surging in nominal value. When economic tightness returns sooner or later, it causes another surge in property prices. • Generational asset. You can pass on property from generation to generation, conceivably making your family and loved ones lives a little bit better. Think about our university graduates nowadays who are complaining they might never be able to afford owning a home like their parents due to exorbitant prices. Now think how much worse it will be for their children. Everybody has heard a story of some grandparent buying a home for just N20, 000 that is now worth millions of Naira. If you can buy a property to live and enjoy, and then pass it down the family to give your children a heads start, what an amazing gift you’ll provide. But besides working hard, a massive generational wealth transfer should help support future generations. • Little effort to build wealth. The whole idea is to invest in assets that work for you, and not the other way around. Real estate is a relatively easy business to understand compared to investing in stocks. For instance, on a rental property, good location, good tenants, manageable maintenance, and rental growth are all it basically takes to make for a solid real estate investment, whereas stocks have so many more variables to deal with, including: management credibility, industry growth, competition, politics, regulation, tax policies, inventory turns, margin analysis, operating profit growth, and more. Meanwhile, to turn N100, 000 into N500, 000 through equity investing is no easy feat, neither is making an interest of another N400,000 on the deposit into a Bank over 7-8 years. • Paying on installment with no interest. For people paying on a property over a period of time on installment, the rate is fixed and the payments never change. 3-4 years from now you might be paying the same amount that aren’t worth as much as when you first took out the subscription for the property on installment. As your net worth grows, the amount you pay monthly or so becomes a smaller part of your overall net worth, thereby reducing any feelings of stress associated with paying for the property. • Collateral asset. Unlike cash, which serves no utility function, property addresses not only a fundamental human need, shelter but can also serve as collateral material against loans. If our financial system goes to hell, at least you will have an asset you can actually utilize. Remember, cash is just an ordinary paper and worthless unless it’s turned into a tangible asset! Continued on Page 50

Own property is in the best location in NIGERIA Continued from Page 49 • Tangible asset. Real estate is a tangible asset that will continue to add measurable value and enduring impact to everyday life and a valuable financial portfolio. It is an investment you can see, feel and touch, giving you a sense of accomplishment and success. KAYODE-OBEMBE & CO LIMITED: Empowering you to become home-owners.
