JULY 23, 1998 PAGE 9 THEVISTA Voice mail in jeopardy; new phone system coming
By Jessica Johnson Student ter p hone services at UCO will shutdown at 5 p.m. July 31 to cut over to a new phone system which will provide students, faculty and staff a more up-to-date phone service.
Dr. Cynthia Rolfe, chief technology officer, said that students, faculty and staff should take precautions to avoid losing their voice mail messages. "At the time of the switch over, any voice mail stored in the system will be lost. Users are encouraged to retrieve all of their messages prior to this time," Rolfe said.
Due to the lack of complete phone service, the Department of Public Safety will have cell phones for emergency use, Rolfe said. "Unlike the old phone system, which left the university unable to upgrade in areas such as adding voice mail and new lines, the new phone system will be more beneficial to faculty, staff and students."
An implementation team headed by UCO's project manager and director of Telecommunications, Ron Beard, accompanied by Jack. Young of Lucent Technologies, will discontinue the service of the pre-existing phone system and switch over to a new phone Cynthia Rolfe system that was installed the week of July 12.
If all goes according to schedule, the new phone service will be operational at midnight on Aug. 1.
The new phone system will allow everyone the opportunity to have voice mail and there will be direct dial capability from the outside to everyone on campus who has a phone.
The system will be Year 2000 compliant, and it will allow users to integrate computer and telephone applications such as video conferencing to a computer desktop, fax service to computers and voice mail to email, Rolfe said. "This service will help move technology into the new millennium at UCO," Rolfe said.
Beginning Aug. 1, dorm students' prefix will be 974 plus their current extension. Resident hall coordinators will be trained on the new system prior to the switch over date.
During the first week of August, a trainer will be available at the dorms to show students how to use the features of the new phone system.
Faculty and staff will be trained in individual sessions by Sandra Franklin, training supervisor for information technology consulting, in conjunction with Lucent Technologies.
Students can watch for posters in the dorms for more information. Faculty and staff can sign up for telephone training on the Web at http://libweb.ucok.edu: 10020/Tel ecom.
