Dear Graduates, Bravo!

I join with you and family and friends in applauding you, our Fall 2016 graduates. Today, I encourage you to stop and savor your achievement and enjoy the celebration and joy that surround you, for your accomplishment says more than you may know. Your Central diploma is an outward sign of your commitment and persistence. It says to the world, “I can make the appropriate sacrifices. I can learn. I can meet the challenge. I can succeed.” Your graduation is a clear manifestation of your own empowerment. You did it, and we are truly proud of you. Be encouraged by what you have accomplished. Now imagine what you are capable of doing. We believe your Central education has given you more than certain skill sets. We believe that you leave here with sharpened abilities to think and act creatively, critically and ethically. You can become the engaged citizens and leaders in whatever community you choose, whatever field you pursue. More importantly, we hope your Central experience has instilled in you a passion for learning, a habit that will be part of you throughout your life. We hope that you leave knowing how to perceive problems and find solutions, and to meet a changing world with a culture of learning that will enrich your life. With your graduation, you have changed your future and that of others who will be influence by you. This is our hope for you. Know, too, that you are always welcomed here, either to further your learning experiences or as a loyal alumn. You are a member of the UCO learning community regardless of where your life takes you. Finally, don’t pass up this opportunity to thank those in your life whose encouragement and love helped you in countless ways to reach this plateau. Tell them today how much they mean to you. You can make a difference; you can be the change you wish to see in the world around you. We believe in you.

Letter from a Graduating Student Queila Omena @queilaomena Reporter

As I type this story tears roll down my cheeks and land on my old UCO shirt that I've had for over three years. This will be my last story for The Vista. I’ll be graduating in two weeks and college will no longer be part of my routine. Everything I knew for the past six years will be in the past and honestly, that scares me. I’m overwhelmed with feelings of contentment, happiness, and nostalgia. Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful for what college has provided me, but at the same time I’m still holding down the memories and people I’ve encountered throughout my journey. College provided me with wings to fly and also showed me that the sky is the limit. Perhaps not even the sky is the limit anymore. UCO opened my mind and helped me embrace diversity as I met people from different backgrounds, cultures, races, ages and religions. I started seeing life with a different perspective, and I started understanding people that were different than me. I've met people from all over the world including France, Norway, Colombia, China, Saudi Arabia and many other countries. I've learned greetings in Chinese, Spanish, French and Italian. I've seen the world as I've never seen before, and for that I'm forever grateful. College provided me with the education, tools and skills needed to achieve my dreams. It pushed me to greater things and motivated me to never give up. Three years ago I had no idea I was going to receive a Bachelor’s degree in professional media production. I wish I could go back in time and tell the old me that everything was going to be okay one day, and that those 10-page research papers would pay off.

The worrying and crying in college led me to success and helped me be persistent. I faced my fears and frustrations and also learned “to adult” as life continued punching me in the guts. The things I thought impossible are now what I do best. The heavy camera equipment that used to bruise my legs is now one of the things I'll miss the most about college. Assignments, presentations, quizzes, exams, research papers along with billions of other curriculum activities showed me that I could face anything in life. If I can write a tenpage paper in a day, I’m sure I can do anything else, right? College will forever be the best years of my life. The years where I figured out who I was, what I stood for and what morals I wanted to carry in my heart. I’m grateful for all the hardship I encountered in college, the good and the bad people that appeared throughout this beautiful journey. For those who helped and guided me throughout college, I thank you from the bottle of my heart. Professors, advisors, co-workers, classmates and everyone that I had the pleasure to work and learn from, you all were my leaders, motivators, and ultimate inspirations. I hope I made you all proud. For the ones that put me down and constantly told me I was never good enough, I can only say thank you. I grew from your comments and used them as fuel to grow even more. I'll thank you on my way to the bank. As I finish this column I realize that college will always have a special place in my heart. I may never get these years back, but they will remain forever in my heart and mind. And now I will be able to say: I am a college graduate.

FACULTY ADVICE

UCO Faculty Offer Advice to Grads Elisabeth Slay @Eslayslay Reporter

As the fall semester draws to a close at the University of Central Oklahoma, graduates of Fall 2016 will begin their journey into the professional world. For some of these students it may be a challenge deciding what type of profession to pursue or intimidating to begin a certain job. Some faculty members from various colleges across the UCO campus offered their advice and encouragement for these graduates. Mark Zimmerman, associate professor and assistant chair of Mass Communication, said that for students pursing a career in photography it is important to embrace involvement. “Go out in the field... I think getting real handson experience is always good and it complements the studies that you did in school. So internships, practicums, part-time jobs, we just encourage our students to get out and enjoy the market that they are in,” Zimmerman said. For photography majors that are not certain of their prospects following graduation, Zimmerman said there are numerous ways for them to start in the field.

“We have several [students] that have gotten into photojournalism. We have several [students] that have gotten into commercial photography...Many of them get into weddings and portraits. That is a big seller as far as photography,” Zimmerman said. Another major offered at UCO is Forensic Science, which has enabled success for numerous past students, according to Deborah Clark, Forensic Science Business Manager. “We have students that are police officers...we also have one that is a UCO police officer. We have one that is a digital forensics examiner that works at the FBI...We have several that work in the medical examiners office,” Clark said. Clark also said that there are various students that have gone on to work at the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and other forensic departments around the country. According to Clark, for students studying Forensic Science, it is wise to pair it with an additional subject and then essentially combine the two. Clark encourages graduates to become wellversed in their specialty, whether it be criminal justice or biology. “I would say whatever your focus is, whatever you love to do, that’s what you need to really do

The University of Central Oklahoma would not be able to run properly without the faculty that helps our students succeed. The advice that is offered to students is always vital to success. Photo by Cara Johnson, The Vista.

first. A lot of students come in and they come here for Forensic Science and they don’t know what to pair their major with...So a lot of times after they take Intro to Forensic Science they get a broader idea of how big the field is,” Clark said. Another department with a large number of students, is the Department of Nursing. According to Linda Rider, associate professor and chairperson of the Department of Nursing, students within that department typically have a job pertaining to their major. “For our graduate students, most of them come to us already with jobs as like staff nurses [or] charge nurses... Once they graduate they tend to go into either hospital education, academic education or they take a leadership position as a unit manager,” Rider said. Rider said that the field of nursing offers several different prospects for students and that UCO attempts to prepare the graduating class. “The job field is good, it’s strong especially in this area. We do things to help them be prepared for the job market but basically they just need to continue their learning, get that first job and go on from there,” Rider said.

Rebecca Devine Graduated May 2016 - Nursing

Q:How has UCO shaped you throughout the years? “UCO helped shape me into the person that I am today. Along with the education needed for my degree, UCO also taught me self discipline, determination, leadership, how to work along side others, and to always strive for my goals. I am forever grateful for the many friendships I made and for all of my professors that believed in me and got me to where I am now.” Rebecca Devine is a Nursing Alumna from the University of Central Oklahoma. Devine graduated in May 2016. Photo provided by Rebecca Devine.

Karin Deupree Graduated Summer 1987 - Interior Design Q: What did you love most about UCO? “I liked my professors, one in particular… she had worked in the field herself so she was knowledgeable about that and was very helpful. By the time that you get to the end of your school, you’re taking a lot of those specific classes, so I had her for a lot of those classes.” Karin Deupree is an Interior Design Alumna from the University of Central Oklahoma. Rachel Whitney Graduated May 2015 - History

Q: How did UCO guide you to where you are now?

“I found UCO in the hardest years of my life. I didn’t know anyone in town, or anyone in the whole state; I didn’t even know myself. It took 5 declared Majors, 8 years, 2 schools, 2 states. But I did it. I found my passion - for the first time in my life... UCO has a program in Museum Studies where we learn how to preserve and teach history... After only being a college grad for 3 days, I found a museum - a small museum that needed help... now, I am running that small museum.”

Edmond Slyman Graduated May 1966 - Science Education Q: What did UCO mean to you? “Going to Central State (UCO) was a great experience. It taught me how to divide my time between learning, working, and how to pay the price to achieve.”

Mark Codner Graduated in 1988 - Journalism

Q: How has UCO shaped you into the person you are today? “Without a college degree there’s no telling where I would be. I feel like it allowed me to further myself as a writer and as a journalist. It opened up a lot of doors that would not have been opened to me had I not continued with my education at UCO...The classes were smaller at that time and we had one on one instruction with our senior level courses. It was incredible.”

Harold Storey Graduated May 2016-Strategic Communications Q: What did you love most about UCO? “What I loved most about UCO was how much the professors wanted us to succeed. It was always nice to know that if I had a problem, or didn’t understand a concept, the professors were willing and able to help. They are our biggest advocates.” Harold Storey is an alumnus from the University of Central Oklahoma. Storey graduated in May 2016 in Strategic Communications. Photo provided by Harold Storey.

Q: How has UCO shaped you as a person and photographer? “Being a student in the photography program at UCO is great because individuality is encouraged. The program is incredibly diverse, but everyone shares a similar passion for photography. Aside from shaping us as artists, the program pushes students to be better people and leaders, whether that leadership occurs within the classroom, or outside of the classroom.”

Kelsey Haddox Family and Consumer Science Q: What are your plans after you graduate? “I plan to teach Family and Consumer Sciences in Edmond Public Schools or at a school in the surrounding districts along with advising the school’s FCCLA organization.”

Computer Science with Mathematics Minor Q: How has UCO shaped you through the years (personally or professionally)?

“Although I barely spoke few words in English when I started going to UCO, people tried to listen and to understand me. It meant a lot for me, because some people think that people who do not speak English are stupid.”

Top 10 Cities Hiring

A recent study done by Zumper, an apartment rental website, collected data that ranked the top ten cities hiring college graduates. This study focused on employment rates and places that are “young people friendly.” Not only does Madison rank number one, but it also has one of the lowest rates for unemployment in young people in general, at just 5.53%. Austin scored very low in rent affordability, because of its growing popularity, but it scored high in other categories such as employment rate. Unlike Austin, Columbus had a very high ranking for rent, about $580 for a one-bedroom apartment. Salt Lake City scored well on employment and youth in the city with a 15.7% of the total population being between the ages 20-29. Although Boston was ranked high on hiring college graduates, it has the third highest rent prices in the nation. This can make it difficult for young people to live there. Fargo’s employment rate for young people is rated as one of the lowest in the nation at about 4%. Boulder ranked well in hiring college

graduates and has a large single population. Washington D.C. was also ranked high with hiring graduates and with its young population, but poor in its rent prices. Oklahoma City was also ranked in the top ten, where its young professional employment rates are in the top 15% of all cities in the United States. Senior at UCO Bianca Daneshmand, double majored in Accounting and Finance. She said she is excited to graduate but is nervous because she does not yet have a job lined up, but was pleased to find that Oklahoma made the top ten list. “I know there are a lot of opportunities in accounting and finance. I plan to stay in Oklahoma for a while,” Daneshmand said. Many students are nervous about finding work after graduation, but according to the National Center for Education Statistics, 20 to 24 year-old females with a bachelor’s degree or higher have an 88% employment rate. It is higher for 20 to 24 year-old males with the same qualifications at 99%. Callie Ridley, a recent UCO graduate and professional media major, now works for Nominee Design. Ridley said

that she didn’t have this job lined out and didn’t get hired because of her communications degree, but it is helpful with her daily schedule. “I think eventually I will move from Oklahoma. At this moment, I’m really happy working in Oklahoma and in the future I’ll be able to travel due to the job I have so that’s something I’m really looking forward to,” Ridley said. Another recent UCO graduate, Cody Lake, graduated with a bachelor’s in Chemistry. He works in a lab at the Oklahoma Blood Institute. Lake said that although his job is temporary, he wants to be in health care. Lake also said he thinks this exposes him to a different aspect of medicine that he hasn’t had the opportunity to be around before. “I had an interview with this job before graduation but I didn’t get an offer until about a week after graduation, “ Lake said. Although some students are nervous about obtaining jobs, they should take comfort in the fact that having a degree already puts them within the top 40% of Americans seeking jobs.
