Precious Becket Casket Displayed at the Museum of Somerset

A jewelled and enamelled casket depicting medieval England’s most infamous murder is going on display at the Museum of Somerset in Taunton.

The Becket Casket, made in about 1180, held relics of St. Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. He was murdered in 1170 by knights who had Somerset and Devon roots and were followers of King Henry II.

The precious object is being loaned by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London (V&A) and will be displayed at the Museum of Somerset from Saturday 30th January to Saturday 2nd April.

Y DEAR OLD DAD would never offer unsolicited advice. ‘Wise folk don’t need it and fools don’t take it,’ he told me. If asked for his advice he would invariably respond with a question intended to make me think for myself, to consider the facts and to assess the potential consequences of the various courses of action open to me. I guess these days, if he were still alive, he would tell me to ‘do a risk assessment’.

What brought these childhood memories to mind was the publication in early January of the Government’s revised guidelines on drinking alcohol with the stark warning that no level of regular drinking is without risks to health. It claims that the evidence that alcohol is beneficial for health is ‘considered less strong than it was’ and the risk of getting cancer ‘starts from any level of regular drinking and rises with the amount being drunk’. Yet just a couple of years ago a Swindon doctor who had been prescribing two glasses of red wine a day to 10,000 patients for ten years found that it had reduced by 50% their risk of having a second heart attack and by 20% of having a stroke. He concluded that red wine helps to prevent blood clots from forming, causes the arteries to dilate, reduces blood pressure and increases good cholesterol.

And research in the Czech Republic found that people who drink a beer a day are 50% less likely than non-drinkers to develop heart disease because beer is particularly rich in vitamins B6, B9 and B12 that give some protection against cardiovascular disease, and the ethanol it contains thins the blood. Cider’s healthy attributes were recognised as long ago as 1664 by John Evelyn who noted that it ‘excites and cleanses the stomach, strengthens the digestion and infallibly frees the kidney and bladder from breeding the gravel stone . . .’ and by John Worlidge in 1676 who wrote that ‘constant use of this liquor . . . hath been found by long experience to avail much to health

and long life, preserving the drinkers of it in their full strength and vigour even to very old age.’

At my advanced age if I were to take too seriously all the health scares I read in the newspapers it would seriously damage my mental health. It sometimes seems that everything I eat and drink is bad for me and will lead to my premature and probably painful demise. So instead I remind myself of the wise words of Rumpole creator John Mortimer: ‘There is no human activity, eating, sleeping, drinking or sex which some doctor somewhere won’t discover leads directly to cardiac arrest.’ I suspect that a good wine, beer or cider – sipped to appreciate its aroma, flavour and finish – can be enjoyed in healthy moderation, but you might want to do your own risk assessment first.

Letters To the Editor Foul Pavement Foulers

Sir, As a dog owner I am extremely embarrassed by the number of 'Dog Owner' warning notices appearing in greater numbers all over Castle Cary; notices which firmly request that canine excrement should be cleaned up and bagged in the understood fashion.

I am embarrassed because every one of these notices is wholly justified.

My own dog, 'Duster', is of an age yet he needs his daily quota of good exercise which takes us both to the surrounding fields and pathways.

Now I find it difficult to walk anywhere without treading in dog dirt. There are areas of paving on South Street where the very visible and disgusting evidence of this arrogant disregard for

other people's welfare is most horribly obvious.

I, along with my wife, have never failed to bag Duster's droppings; regardless of climatic and dietary conditions - if you follow my drift, yet I have witnessed numerous dog-walkers pretending to be oblivious to their pet's squats and drops.

Recently, I offered a dirt-bag to such an offender whose response was to stare at both my dog and myself as if we were from some lower life form and so embarrassed have I become by these foul and supercilious people that I have even resorted to doing the job for them.

However, I may take to photographing offenders and arranging for a hall of shame to be placed somewhere in the town.

A dog is not a fashion accessory; neither is a dog a status symbol; a dog is a living, breathing animal with the same evacuative needs as ourselves a dog just needs a little help in the process of cleaning up.

Sir, I would like to reply to Tim Bonner’s letter in the December issue of The Visitor.

Tim Bonner, being the Chief executive of the Countryside Alliance, makes a very good case for controlling the population of wildlife and the repeal of the Hunting Act. Hunts have long claimed hunting foxes and deer offers a more natural form of pest control so perhaps Mr Bonner could explain the discovery of 16 fox cubs being hand-reared in a barn next to the Middleton Hunt kennels, presumably to boost their numbers for future hunts.

There have been other cases of hunts deliberately rearing foxes and transporting them to different locations to ensure a good days fun, does this not negate their claims of helping farmers with pest control?

The cruelty of hunting with packs of hounds has been widely discussed over the years and many former fox hunters are now enjoying what is known as ‘clean boot or drag racing.’ The scents laid in this form of hunting are not animal based, therefore the hounds have no interest in following wild animals.

Huntsmen and women can still show off their fine horses and fancy clothes and enjoy the hunt which can last even longer than the traditional hunting of foxes.

No Mr Bonner, it is now the 21st century and there is no excuse for chasing terrified exhausted wildlife before killing it by multiple dog bites, it is this which should be consigned to the dustbin of history, not the Hunting Act. W. Holbrew Wells

Can Carnival Clubs Survive?

Sir, For over 35 years Castle Cary has had our club (Cary Comedians Carnival Club) and The Britannia Carnival Club, sadly Britannia has now folded, leaving our club the only surviving club. With four 1st’s in the Wessex Circuit, the club won the Formula II Class. With seven seconds in the County Circuit the club was runner up in Bridgwater and the County Circuit and runner up in Mid-Somerset.

For well over 20 years the club has either been 1st or runner up in carnivals but the club is now struggling to survive having used up most of the reserves last year for expensive insurance, generator repairs and the hire of two tractors. To enter carnivals the club has to fundraise well over £10,000 each year and relies on further donations.

We have had one generous donation of £1000 and with prize monies we now have £2350. We have to raise again well over £10,000 to continue. There will now be a donations box permanently in The White Hart Castle Cary. Nicky, the landlady, is our new chairman and Maureen Higgins our new president.

We have lost several performers, we need at least six new performers and more people to help build the float at Orchard Farm. This is a voluntary organisation and can I now plea for help to keep this club alive in its 38th year!

Carnivals in Somerset bring in £40 million to the economy and raises over £100,000 for local charities. It is a unique event in the local calendar and how would you feel if there was no Cary Comedians performing in our Cary & Somerset carnivals?

Westland Classic Motorcycle Club

Over 320 West Country bikers enjoyed a great evening’s entertainment recently at the Gateway Centre, Yeovil.

Organised by former Honda director and honorary club member Gerald Davison, the Westland Classic Motorcycle Club raised £5400 for the Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. The entertainment for the evening was provided by popular former bike racer and now commentator Steve Parish, who used parts of his ‘MAD’ theatre show to recount some of the wild and amusing experiences of his career at the top of motorcycle sport and later as the world’s most successful truck racer.

Mr Davison also conducted an auction of rare racing parts including some from one of IOM TT legend John McGuinness’s race bike and a Grand Raffle was sponsored by local bike dealers, Bransons of Yeovil.

The proceeds of the evening surpassed all previous fund raising events the club has held since its founding in 1984. Over the years the club’s members have now raised in the region of £185,000 for various local charities.

Race for Life Launches in Sherborne

Sherborne women are being urged to get the New Year off to a great start by signing up now to Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life 2016. The charity is calling on women of all shapes and sizes to show cancer who’s boss by entering the Race for Life 5k event at Sherborne Castle on 19th June.

Hearing Dogs helping local deaf people

Ilminster Rotarians and their guests were recently treated to a fascinating insight into how ‘hearing dogs’ help deaf people cope safely with both work and everyday tasks. Most people are aware of Seeing Eye Dogs for the blind, but know little about the

important work carried out by the Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Trust.

With more than 800,000 severely or profoundly deaf people in the UK, and with levels of deafness steadily on the rise, the demand for Hearing Dogs is greater than ever. It takes 18 months to train a puppy, which includes socialising the young animals, 18 weeks of advanced training teaching them how to alert their eventual owners to important sounds, and a careful matching-up process with their new life partners.

It costs £25,000 to create a partnership between a deaf person and a hearing dog, with ongoing support costing up to a further £15,000. At present there are 873 active hearing dogs in Britain with 380 deaf applicants waiting.

Charity Fundraiser

Somerton school children got to meet a very important guide dog recently when Webster came to visit King Ina Academy.

Webster was brought in to a special assembly by his owner Haydn Callow, who is visually impaired, and Haydn’s daughter Jo Andrews who is running the London Marathon in April to raise money for the charity Guide

Dogs.

Aiming to raise a target of £4,500 for the charity, Jo is holding a fundraising charity indoor gala at Huish Leisure Centre, Langport, on Sunday, February 7, from 11am-1pm, where people can come and meet Webster, and enjoy a number of games and activities.

Flood Action Plan

Somerset Rivers Authority is proposing a multi-million pound scheme to protect the Somerset Levels and Moors from flooding.

Following on from the major work at Beer Wall on the A372, further improvements are being discussed for the River Sowy and King’s Sedgemoor Drain, from Monk’s Leaze Clyse near Langport down to Dunball sluice north of Bridgwater.

A public drop-in session about this scheme is being held at Othery Village Hall on Wednesday, 3 February, 2.30pm7.30pm. All welcome.

Langport & District History Society

Westland’s world helicopter speed record

It still stands today as one of the greatest ever achievements in the 100 year history of Westland’s in Yeovil.

When a Westland built Lynx attempted to set a new world helicopter speed record back in August 1986 few gave it much chance of success.

But not only did the Lynx outperform the world helicopter speed record, it did so at speeds that have never been bettered since.

Now, students at Yeovil College are making a film to mark the 30th anniversary of the record breaking flight, to re-

tell the story of how pilot, Trevor Eggington, flew his G-Lynx at 249.10 miles an hour over the Somerset Levels out-pacing the helicopter speed record of the time by more than 40 miles an hour.

The film titled Yeovil’s Magnificent Flying Machines is being made as part of an oral history project to create a spoken archive of aircraft manufacturing in Yeovil from 1915 to the present.

The final version of the film and the interviews will be made available to the public through Yeovil Library, Fleet Air Arm Museum, and via a dedicated community website.

Look out for everyday activities that can help you become more active. They could include:

Every 10 minutes count so try to set yourself achievable goals.

Always build up gradually and speak to your GP before increasing your activity levels significantly.

If you're generally fit and have no health conditions that limit your ability to move around, the Government recommends that you build up to doing twoand-a-half hours of moderate activity each week. Moderate activity may leave you feeling warm and a little breathless. Eye Care

Like any part of the body the eyes age, with normal changes such as lack of focussing, longer adaption times to changing light, more light being needed for reading and watering eyes being common and frustrating.

Yes it can. If your qualifying net gains exceed the lifetime limit applicable to the time you make that disposal, no further relief is due and the excess over that amount is wholly chargeable at the CGT rate (18% or 28% for disposals made on or after 23 June 2010). The annual exempt amount is allocated in the most beneficial way, so is set first against gains having the highest rate of CGT. If you make a subsequent business disposal in a later year which qualifies for entrepreneurs' relief, the total relief (for all years) is still limited to your lifetime limit.

MOTORING VINTAGE Motor Cycling

I WRITE THESE WORDS during the first few days of 2016, with Christmas festivities still fresh in the memory and New Year's resolutions remaining unbroken.

The weather remains unseasonably mild with much rain and strong winds. My heart goes out to those living in Scotland, Cumbria and Yorkshire whose lives have been ruined with the awful flooding. I can think of little worse than having several feet of foul water through the house.

Difficulties will continue for a very long time, especially if they try to sell those houses or seek insurance. I wish them well. I then thought what would have happened if this mild weather were ten degrees colder and all this rain had come down as snow.

Experts tell us that one foot of snow is equivalent to one inch of rain and in Cumbria they had six inches of rain within 24 hours.

Club life continues unabated of course. During February the Somerset Section has its AGM and a photo display for its club night at Cossington on the 4th. On the 19th they have their Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation evening, and on the 21st they round the month off with Ralph's Run from Fivehead. The Wessex Veteran and Vintage Section just have their club night at East Stour on the 8th. The Dorset Section start with their Lunch Meet at West Stour on the 3rd. Club night at Pulham will be on the 10th followed on the 14th by a Winter Run from Gillingham. The 27th will see us return to West Stour for the Breakfast Meet. As usual more details can be had by ringing 01935-872528.

All three Sections, with many more of course, will be taking part in the Bristol Classic Bike Show on 6th & 7th February. To be held at the Bath & West Showground at Shepton Mallet this event is a must for anyone interested in two or three wheeled transport from any era. Machines exceeding one thousand in number will be on display for your examination and will range from those perfectly restored to ones in their original condition. An autojumble and trade stands plus an auction of machines will add purpose to the day and might just tempt you to add another machine to your

collection to be restored and ready for showing next year. It will take a good day to see everything on display. Everyone seems to attend this show and a very social day out is assured. I hope to see you there.

Thinking of the show I can report that my project Rover is now complete and will be on display at the show. All it needs now is a thorough clean a few days before the event. This restoration has taken five years to complete but I am pleased with the result.

I have accumulated a long list of domestic chores around the house and garden which must be completed before I even think about starting another project. I have three possibles in mind but that is as far as I may go at this time, just thinking about it. My only trouble at the moment is that as I cross one job off the list so I notice two others have been added.

Does that sound familiar at all?

One of my future projects is a 1916 Humber of 600cc. This is an

extremely rare machine, few having been made with very few now surviving. To prove, were it considered necessary, that an element of insanity is an essential constituent of this hobby I thought you may appreciate a picture of this machine as bought, and so I have included it for my photograph this month. Why I spend good money to buy such piles of rust is beyond even me at times but you must think of the end product. It seems many of my bikes have arrived in this state, which does not particularly phase me, as with any full restoration everything has to be refurbished anyway. You can imagine the hours of work ahead and know why these jobs generally take me around one to two years for completion. Wish me luck and perhaps in two years time I shall be taking that one up to Shepton Mallet.

In the meantime I am thoroughly enjoying my winter riding and already making plans for the season ahead. I wish everyone safe and happy motoring during 2016 and may the weather gods be kind to us.

There are many different ways to arrive at, and depart from, your wedding venue. A limo works well with a traditional wedding, but if that's not your style, get creative and match your ride to your personality. FOR SOME OF US, particularly the men amongst our number, the very mention of St. Valentine's Day can conjure up a sense of fear and trepidation.

Although it is now considered to be a commercial marketing exercise, the tradition of Valentine’s Day, does have a long and complicated history going as far back as the middle ages, and provides the perfect excuse to show our loved ones just how much they mean to us.

They say that the way to a loved one’s heart is through their stomach so readers with allotments may want to consider the aphrodisiac qualities of the fruits, vegetables and herbs they grow in deciding what to plant, in order to ensure that they have the best possible chance of reaping what they sow, in more ways than one!

What we eat does directly influence our bodies and one key factor is nutrition; under nourishment creates a loss of libido and reduces fertility rates.

‘It’s a Way of Life’

MUSICIAN AND SONGWRITER Antony Richard Middleton-Snead won awards in the ‘Jazz-Blues’, ‘RnB – Urban’, ‘Adult Contemporary’, ‘Acoustic Folk’ and ‘Love Songs’ categories at the Annual British Songwriting Competition last year.

Listening to his album ‘It’s a Way of Life’, it is easy to see why: The album is diverse in that it spans many genres … and yet it has a consistency that is both refreshing and familiar.

Having written and composed over a thousand songs and having performed for many years, Middleton-Snead is clearly an accomplished musician. His style has more than a pinch of Country influence both lyrically and musically but he doesn’t stop there: He references The Clash and The Stranglers in ‘Gotham City’, nods to Reggae in the 1975 track ‘only poor man cry’, Jazz/ Blues in humorous ‘miss Julie Browne’ and serenades ‘en francais’ in ‘la manouche’. It is evident that Castle Cary dweller Middleton-Snead finds inspiration from many cultures, personalities and places, including France whence ‘Manouche’ (gypsy jazz) style music hails.

Written over a forty five year period, the songs on the album reflect its title perfectly: ‘It’s a Way of Life’ feels like an insight into the boy, the man and his alter-ego. For those who enjoy clever lyrics, music that takes you on a journey and an AcousticFolk, Jazz or Blues style, this album is well worth a spin or two.

Chimney fires can not only destroy homes but also endanger the occupiers of the dwelling.

Slow-burning chimney fires don't get enough air or have enough fuel to be as dramatic or visible as their more spectacular cousins.

The temperatures they reach are very high and can cause damage to the chimney structure and nearby combustible parts of the house. Use only recommended fuels for your appliance and flue type (if you are unsure then check your manufacturers instructions, ask your stove supplier, or your local NACS Chimney Sweep).

Chimneys need to allow the free passage of dangerous combustion gases. Regular Chimney Sweeping will remove soot, bird nests, cobwebs and any other blockages. It also removes creosote, which will help to prevent dangerous chimney fires.

Normally Chimney Sweeps will need a clear passage to the chimney and adequate space to work in. They may suggest you clear any ornaments from the hearth and mantelpiece, and perhaps you could clear the grate of any fuel, ash or rubbish etc. before the sweep arrives.

Gas and oil flues will also need to be swept. It is essential that all flues are kept clean and clear of debris and vermin nests. It will also help with the prevention of chimney fires and even carbon monoxide poisoning. If you have just moved house, then it is important you have your chimney swept as soon as possible as you

A. 2016 will absolutely be the year of self-expression. As more people are becoming braver we've seen a lot more experimentation in people's homes and that is really going to show this year. We're no longer satisfied with Cream or Magnolia and so Grey has become the go-to neutral.

The diversity of Blue is making it the colour of the year, no longer reserved for children's bedrooms it's taking over the house. This is a trend Little Greene have picked up on and they recently launched a brand new colour chart dedicated to this chameleon colour. Often associated with calm and serenity, it also symbolises loyalty, confidence, intelligence and trust. At the moment there is a trend for the deeper, richer Navy which creates a dramatic, yet welcoming feel, especially in living spaces. However, with so many varieties it can be used everywhere, from warmer green

tones in the bedroom to paler purple tones for the bathroom.

However, pale blue may not be deep enough for some as another trend we're seeing is bolder bathrooms. A lot of people struggle with bathrooms due to their size and worry that anything other than white or pastels can overwhelm such a small area; quite the opposite is true, however. Rather than fight the small space and desperately try to make everything feel bigger, creating a statement has become the new focus. Being, typically, a small room it doesn't cost a lot to redecorate and you can really have fun with the colours and accessories. Try one dark colour on the walls and ceilings, accessorising with metallics or brights to lift the look.

leads to an uncomfortable urge to move the legs and often triggers unsettling creeping and crawling sensations in the lower limbs (and sometimes the arms).

RLS often strikes at night, disrupting sleep patterns which can lead to anxiety and depression. The cause may be unknown although genetics and nutritional deficiencies may play a role as does gender - with women being twice as likely as men to suffer from RLS. This month we’ll be taking a look at a few of the nutrients commonly used to help this distressing condition.

Magnesium - The muscle relaxer. Magnesium can be helpful whenever twitches, cramps and spasms may be present and is one of the minerals most commonly considered deficient in the general population. One of my favourite ways to use magnesium is as an oil massaged into the skin. This is thought to be a more easily absorbed form of the mineral and can also be used to target problem areas. Great for tense muscles too, try massaging magnesium oil

into your skin in the evening, before bed - or even better, get someone else to give you a massage! Magnesium can also be useful for improving poor sleep.

For those taking medications or during pregnancy (which can be a risky time for developing RLS) the tissue salt Mag Phos can be safely used.

Iron - Iron deficiency anaemia can be a factor in the development of RLS. You can have your Iron levels checked with your GP and low Iron can often be easily rectified by supplementing. Some may find certain forms of Iron quite harsh on their digestive system and if this sounds like you look for a gentle form of this mineral such as iron bisglycinate.

Vitamin E - There is some evidence that Vitamin E can be helpful. Try 400iu per day for a few months.

Folic Acid - In some with genetic RLS, requirements for Folic Acid seem to be higher than normal. Supplementing may be beneficial although high doses are required and so should be managed by your health professional. Some people also have a poor conversion rate of folic acid into active forms within the body and so choosing your source of folate is important. Look for methylfolate or 5MTHF, a biologically active form of folic acid.

L-Tryptophan - This amino acid is a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin and is used for pain, insomnia and depression amongst other things.

It may benefit both RLS and disrupted sleep. Available as LTryptophan and its derivative 5-Hydroxy-Tryptophan or 5HTP. Potassium - An important nutrient for proper functioning of

the muscles and nerves.

Potassium is abundant in fruits and vegetables, so eating a good variety of these should easily ward off deficiency.

Home remedies - Try Epsom salt baths which are rich in magnesium. Apple Cider Vinegar has been of help for some sufferers - drink 1 Tbsp in a glass of water in the evening. You can also massage ACV into your legs before bed. Blackstrap molasses are rich in Iron and a Tbsp of these can also be mixed into some water and be taken in the evening. You can even blend the ACV and molasses together as a simple home remedy.

Lifestyle & Medications The usual suspects apply here with caffeine, alcohol and poor blood sugar control potentially playing a part in RLS. Some medications are also known to increase symptoms including anti-depressants, calcium channel blockers (for high blood pressure), anti-psychotics and antihistamines. Talk to your GP if you are taking medicines and think they may be exacerbating RLS or any other symptoms there may well be alternatives!

So if you’re a sufferer of this distressing condition I hope I’ve given you a few ideas of remedies that may help. Don’t suffer in silence, especially if this is disrupting your sleep patterns and mood. Go to your GP or pop into your local health food shop for a chat. Wishing you restful legs and peaceful sleep until next time.

Those of us who are of a certain age will recall the advertising that declared 'Craven A will not affect your throat' and 'Camels, the cigarettes enjoyed by doctors' - and so it went on. It hasn't stopped there, with bacon (Ah! the smell of bacon - it even tempts Vegetarians to repent!) also coming from the Devil's own Satanic Herd of Swine.

Then there is butter, too much red meat, processed meats, full fat cheese, plus we can throw in a few various cholesterols - and life really gets dangerous. The latest to add to the list is alcohol, and doubtless

perhaps even building long-term relationships with a member of the opposite sex (40% of us do so apparently). It's a very 'social drug'!

A very good friend of mine loves his motorbike. In fact he has always loved motorbikes. The fact is that there are, sadly, many people who die in motorbike accidents and my friend is more than aware of this fact. However, he, like so many others, is prepared to take the risk, and despite him being knocked off his bike a couple years back - and despite that he is now at an age when parts of the body that used to bend now break, he is prepared to continue the risk of riding his bike. It's what we do; we take risks every day, in fact I would go as far as to say we enjoy taking risks; and

some of us do so more than others!

So what is this increased risk of cancer? Well, Dame Sally Davies tells us that it would increase our risk (i.e. men, specifically) of developing bowel cancer by 20 in 1000. As one learned commentator puts it 'Why 20 in 1000 rather than 2%, which is what it is? Well, 20 in 1000 sounds more dramatic'. You may or may not be interested to know that your humble scribe developed bowel cancer some nine years ago. The operation and treatment was not pleasant, but had I had this information to hand 45 years ago would it have made me stop drinking? No! I would not have been put off just because the increased risk of developing cancer (they now say) is just 2%! I have always been a moderate drinker, and so one cannot even say with conviction that the alcohol was the cause.

My own father died at 71 and rarely - and I do mean rarely touched a drop of alcohol. Whilst he was an all round decent bloke, thinker and amateur philosopher (we had many interesting and deep discussions) his abstinence didn't

prevent him departing this plane of existence much too early, by today's standards, at least. He was not a fan of me visiting our local pub whilst underage (yeah, I admit it) but discussions were rarely high-volume!

A belated Happy New Year to both my readers. Turned a little bit cold just lately. Time for the thermals to come out of the airing cupboard.

In the pub the great debate continues as to whether the new roundabout at the bottom of Hendford Hill has helped to ease the flow of traffic. And the general consensus is that it is a total waste of money and of course if the shiny suits who implemented the changes had to be elected then they would not have done it. It’s easy spending other people’s money. A bit different when it’s your own, or you have to account for it. But let’s give them a chance: they have another two roundabouts and 9 million quid to go yet!

Next month a young couple, Jim and Flo Essex who eat at my place q u i t e r e g u l a r l y, a r e c o m i n g t o celebrate what will be Jim’s 90th Birthday. They are still doing loads of things for charity and they walk into town arm in arm most days. So if you see them give them a wave.

Well done Jim! And well done Flo for putting up with him  .

Do I know any heavy drinkers?

Sure, there are a couple that regularly add to the coffers at our local, and that is their choice.

The ones I mix with most - the skittle team, are those who enjoy a couple of pints - maybe even a 'few more' but that is on skittle night and they are only very occasional drinkers at other times. Mind you, a 'few pints' may well have labelled them as 'binge drinkers' just a of couple years back. All seems to have gone quiet on that topic, for the time being, at least! ... and so to our conclusion.

When asked about the prospect of turning his back on alcohol to help prolong his life, Kingsley Amis (an aficionado of single malt Scotch) replied: ‘No pleasure is worth giving up for the sake of two more years in a geriatric home at Weston-super-Mare.’

Wine blends - the perfect marriage for Valentine's Day

WHILST THE VERY MENTION of Valentine’s Day will ensure that those of us, like myself, currently unattached and with no sign of the merest hint of passion on the horizon, will want to take cover until it is all over, others will want to use it as an excuse to take advantage of the opportunity to declare their undying love, and perhaps propose.

Many years ago, whilst cooking in New York, I was indeed asked to prepare a romantic dinner for two on Valentine’s Day in a swish apartment overlooking Central Park, during which the proposal was made, with the ring hidden in a brandy snap served with dessert.

For many of those who do choose to make it an occasion to remember, both wine and food are likely to be high up on the agenda. There is always the argument for a slap up meal in a prize winning restaurant but for me nothing can beat an intimate dinner at home, with a decent bottle to share with my loved one.

In thinking about wine, and blends in particular, it is the ability of a skilled wine maker to be able to bring different grape varieties together to allow their key characteristics to shine through; enabling them to complement one another by bringing out the best in both, a perfect partnership, just like a good marriage of equal but different partners, the whole being better than the sum of its parts.

Before splashing out on that special bottle you will likely want to have some idea of what to expect if you are to please your loved one; the grape variety and the region in which it is grown will provide you with valuable clues.

So, to get you in the mood for a romantic evening here are my top choices to ensure a harmonious relationship.

BIT OF A WEIRD WINTER so far, loads of rain, grey days with temperatures fluctuating from a balmy 13°C plunging to the icy depths of -4°C then returning to the mid-teens. Plants get terribly confused and all the daffodils that we saw in bloom in December certainly put the brakes on when the January chill came. In my garden things have more or less followed their natural course and the snow drops started at their usual time. Like us, plants do seem to do better after a decent rest and winter dormancy usually provides that [for the plants that is]. The colder the weather the deeper the dormancy and with a cold winter you see the strongest

growth breaking away when the spring arrives. However, we get what we get and there’s nothing very much we can do except be aware of what is happening and treat our plants and our garden with the care they need. Maybe that is one of the great things about gardening in that it allows you to observe and contemplate the living world. I cannot imagine living my life where I couldn’t connect with either plants or the soil, it just wouldn’t be right.

So at this point in the year, lengthening days and better conditions tempt us back out into the garden. There is always loads to do and I have put my job list at the end of this article.

Plant of the month - Camellia

Few hardy shrubs signal the end of winter better than camellias, highly valued for their beautiful flowers and fresh, glossy, evergreen foliage. With dozens of varieties available you'll be spoilt for choice, so pick from camellias in shades of pink, red, white and cream. Their ultimate size, habit and rate of growth vary immensely too, so consider how much space the camellia will need as it grows. Whether you'd like something that stays small and compact or will grow into a bold shrub or even a flowering hedge or screen, the choice is yours.

Camellia flowers vary in size and shape too, and their forms can be divided into six descriptive groups depending on the number of petals and their pattern or arrangement within the flower.

These forms are described as Single, Semi-double, Anemoneform, Peony-form, Rose-form double or Formal double, so take your pick from the ones that most appeal.

Like azaleas and rhododendrons, camellias are ericaceous plants, and this means they need to grow in an acid or lime-free soil to ensure they stay healthy. A simple soil test kit available from garden centres can be used to check your soils acidity/alkalinity (often called its pH), and composts and fertilisers can be added to help make soil more acid.

of camellia grow well in large pots or half-barrels filled with ericaceous compost, available in garden centres. Grown in the right soil and position camellias usually flower reliably with little care and attention, growing larger over time to develop into impressive flowering shrubs.

Most camellias rarely need pruning, but if they outgrow their position individual shoots can be shortened, and plants can even regrow well if cut back hard into old wood.

Where space is available develop a seasonal bed including a camellia or two and other evergreens and early flowering plants to provide welcome colour through late winter and into early spring.

There are literally hundreds of camellia varieties available from nurseries across the country with numerous colours, forms and sizes. Most have glossy green foliage, but some variegated varieties are also available. The very best camellias are given an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) by the Royal Horticultural Society to indicate their superb garden performance, and here are some of the most popular.

Top Tips for growing colourful camellias

1. Early flowering camellias can be damaged by frost, so position plants in a sheltered part of your garden. Move pots to sheltered sites during bad weather. Cover bushes with sheets of fleece to protect buds and blooms on frosty nights, removing it once conditions warm-up in the morning.

2. Water camellias with collected rain water if possible. Some tap water contains high levels of lime (often referred to as hard water), so avoid using this to water camellias and other ericaceous plants.

3. Grown in chalky soil or irrigated with hard tap water the leaves of camellias usually turn pale and yellow. Feeding these plants with an ericaceous plant food or iron sequestrene can help them regain their glossy green appearance.

4. Camellias start forming flower buds during late summer and autumn, so make sure plants never go short of water through the year or poor flower development and bud drop can result.

By the way- did you know that some camellias flower through autumn and into winter? Look out for varieties of Camellia sasanqua to provide this welcome winter colour. And as an added bonus their flowers are often wonderfully fragrant too!

Top Four Plants for winter flowers

Witch Hazel (Hamamelis varieties). Unusual fragrant flowers in clusters of tiny ribbons develop along the entire length of stems. Popular AGM varieties include ‘Pallida' (sulphur-yellow), ‘Jelena' (coppery-orange) and ‘Diane' (red).

Oregon Grape (Mahonia varieties). Choose from a range of robust and reliable Mahonias to provide evergreen foliage and golden seasonal flower, followed by black grape-like berries in spring. Good AGM varieties include ‘Winter Sun', ‘Apollo' and ‘Charity' among many others.

Winter Flowering Viburnum (Viburnum x bodnantense). A majestic shrub producing deliciously fragrant pink/white flowers. Popular AGM varieties include ‘Dawn', ‘Deben' and ‘Charles Lamont'.

Christmas Rose (Helleborus niger). This compact perennial is perfect for a slightly shady

position, producing clusters of flowers through winter and into spring. Also look out for the many wonderful Hellebore hybrids now available.

Jobs for the Month

Soil temperature is a vitally important factor for plant growth and most seeds will not think about sprouting until the soil reaches 7°C [45°F). There are exceptions, but why take the risk?

Seeds sat in cold, wet soil can quite easily take up moisture and then rot rather than grow. That said, early sowing is a really good idea provided you can give a little warmth starting things off in seed trays or pots. Anybody starting grow-your-own projects should invest in a small heated propagator; this is simply a seed tray sat on an electric blanket allowing the warmth to travel through the moist compost and giving the seed the stimulus it needs to germinate. Avoid getting seed composts too wet, but at the same time don’t let them dry out once the seeds have started to sprout. A propagator gets you ahead of the game with plants ready to harden off and go out that much sooner.

Slugs will have been happily overwintering in damp soil and could have built up their numbers since last year. In general I would certainly suggest staying off wet clay soils to avoid damaging their structure. You can’t dig clay successfully until it has dried a little, and then it is very easy to puddle and create a mess that will take time to restore. Adding coarse grit and organic matter by laying it on the surface is probably the best thing you can do; the worms will happily take it down.

The standard advice on planting through the winter is to avoid frozen or waterlogged soils, but otherwise press on.

In the fruit and vegetable garden, clearing away rubbish, prune the fruit trees, bushes and vines (unless the weather is very frosty), then give them a feed with sulphate of potash, pelleted Vitax Q4 or poultry manure, mulch and cover rhubarb crowns, and rough dig areas that need sorting. Brassicas need protecting from marauding wild life; pigeons are especially hungry and will strip your carefully nurtured sprouting or cabbages in no time.

greenhouse or tunnel then start a few tomatoes and cucumbers off now with heat and a second batch in March. Onions grow well from seed and will equal the crop from sets provided they are sown early enough. Spring onions are tough customers and a few sown in modules now will be worthwhile.

There is a lot to do in the flower garden as well, with finishing winter pruning of dormant trees and shrubs. Leave those shrubs like dogwoods and shrubby willows plants with coloured stems which are at their best over the next two months.

Try to get the roses done as early as is practicable, avoiding pruning in frosty weather as the newly cut surfaces can be damaged by the cold.

Ornamental trees often need a little surgery, young trees need shaping, and mature deciduous shrubs often need thinning out (about a third each year for many sorts). It’s a good time to cut back overgrown deciduous hedges, and, of course, prune the wisteria. Evergreens are best left until March for pruning although hardy evergreen hedges can be dealt with now. Use secateurs on large leafed plants such as laurels to avoid leaf damage.

Bulbs have started to push through and early daffodils will be in colour. If you didn’t get all planted last autumn you can now find potted bulbs in the garden centres to complete your display.

In the 24th and 31st December issues I noted that it had shrunk still further to just 16 pages, which came as a surprise since it is promoted as ‘Your essential guide to going out

and staying in’. The two long weekends of the festive season were surely the time when there was more going on and more people free to decide how to spend their increased leisure time – whether to go out or stay in – so I would have have expected the guide to have been expanded, not contracted. Maybe it’s not as essential as the publishers would like us to believe.

weren’t too disappointed that they missed the Gloucester Quays ‘Enchanted Christmas’ event over the weekend of 11th to 13th December, but the advert for it appeared in the paper on the following Tuesday. Who’s to blame for that blunder, I wonder.

In last month’s column I highlighted some of the typographical errors that have appeared in advertisements, since when a reader has sent me a farm shop advert clipped from the 19th December Western Daily Press’s magazine supplement. It boasted of its ‘new refurbushed cafe’ and having ‘everything you need for a pefect Christmas Dinner’ so clearly nobody bothered to give it a quick scan with the computer’s spellcheck software before going to print. But it would have required a proofreader to pick up the howlers generated by whoever typed the leader column in the paper’s 1st January issue, for in three short paragraphs there appeared ‘debates about the Europe’, ‘being in or out in of Europe’ and ‘but instead to is looking to’, all correctly spelled.

On page 2 of the 4th January issue of the Western Daily Press I was attracted by the headline ‘Officer who kissed new lover on duty has wrist slapped’. On reading the story by reporter Eva Jones I discovered that the on-duty kiss was just one of many wrongdoings committed by

Gloucestershire Constabulary police officers and civilian staff in the last two years. Her lengthy summary of the Constabulary’s revelations and the actions taken in response was both entertaining and informative, but it all seemed somewhat familiar. This was because on page 19 of the 2nd January issue I had read a story headlined ‘Police misconduct list reveals on-duty officer visited lover’, written by reporter Jeff Wells. Clearly both reporters had acquired the same source material and Mr Wells had beaten Ms Jones in getting the story into the editor’s hands, but sympathy for the runner-up is no reason for running the same news twice.

Finally, a puzzle from the 14th January issue of the Western Gazette’s ‘essential’ guide. All you have to do is complete the opening paragraph of the cutting (below) so that you know to where you might be ‘going out’.
