F I WERE To TAkE too seriously all the health scares I read in the newspapers it would seriously d a m a g e m y m e nt a l he a l t h. I t sometimes seems that everything I eat and drink is bad for me and will lead to my premature and probably painful demise.

Instead I remind myself of the wise words of Rumpole creator John Mortimer: ‘There is no human activity, eating, sleeping, drinking or sex which some doctor somewhere won’t discover leads directly to cardiac arrest.’

Then up pops Dr William McCrea with the heartening confirmation that red wine really can help to prevent heart attacks.

According to press reports he has been prescribing two glasses a day to 10,000 patients in Swindon for ten years – and it has reduced by 50% their risk of having a second heart attack and by 20% of having a stroke. He points out that ‘in France people consume twice the amount of fat that we do, they smoke more and they don’t do any more exercise, but their deaths from heart attacks are half ours’.

But they drink red wine, and he reckons this prevents blood clots from forming, causes the arteries to dilate, reduces blood pressure and increases good cholesterol. A glass in the morning and another in the evening is all that’s needed, apparently.

Dr McCrea’s view that wine can be good for our health if consumed in moderation is not new. Wine is mentioned more than 500 times in the Bible, including the much-quoted verse 27 of Ecclesiasticus chapter 31: ‘Wine is as good as life to a man, if it be drunk moderately ... for it was made to make men glad.’ Even earlier, in pre-Christian times, people worshipped Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, because it relaxed them, reduced stress, loosened their inhibitions and inspired creativity in music and poetry. Stress can be a major factor in triggering strokes and heart attacks.

And those who don’t like the taste of red wine might like to know that there is

a possible alternative. Research in the Czech Republic found that people who drink a beer a day are 50% less likely than non-drinkers to develop heart disease because ethanol in beer thins the blood. Beer is particularly rich in vitamins B6, B9 and B12 that give some protection against cardiovascular disease. I like to think that whisky is similarly beneficial but sadly I’ve got no evidence to prove it.

Archeological evidence suggests that grapes were cultivated as long ago as 4000BC although it is impossible to pinpoint exactly when mankind first harnessed the natural process of fermentation of grape juice. But if the traffic police breathalyse me after my breakfast glass of wine, will the medical and historical justifications get me off the hook? I doubt it.

ARTS BBC’s Antiques Roadshow to visit Barrington Court

THE EVER-PoPuLAR Sunday evening programme Antiques Roadshow will be filming for its 37th series in the grounds of Barrington Court, near Ilminster, on Thursday 18th September, 2014. Doors open at 9.30am and close at 4.30pm and entry to the show is free.

Some of Britain’s leading antiques and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors, who are invited to bring along their family heirlooms, household treasures and car boot bargains for inspection by the experts.

A local Diary Bruton Art Society Exhibition, August 2014

The Bruton Art Society 61st Annual Exhibition runs for two weeks from Saturday the 16th to Sunday 31st August, 11am - 5pm.

It really is a great occasion to see and choose from an impressive selection of quality work by local artists offered at affordable prices.

Held again this year in the Main Hall of Bruton Schools for Girls (with the kind permission of the Headmistress and Governors) this is a most attractive venue for displaying the collection of over two hundred entries which make up the exhibition.

With a rotating Hanging Committee making the selection each year of what will be on display, members are kept on their toes and encouraged to enter only their best work. This does not mean any restrictions on style or media and you can expect paintings in oil, watercolour and acrylic, modernist, traditional or abstract in style and including etchings and other prints. As well as the framed works on display there is a large collection or ‘trough’ of mounted but unframed works on offer, together with all the artist made cards one could need. All this adds up to an exhibition well worth visiting.

Sir, Now, that's what I call a review!

Your review of my book Memories of Shipton Gorge should be held as the best example of review writing. So many reviewers simply sum up contents of a book but yours was so insightful and you clearly soaked up all aspects of the book.

I agree whole heartedly with your adverse comments relating to the small size of several photographs especially those on pages 9, 24, 70, 90 and 95. I worked on the book as A4 size and when completed reduced it to the finished A5 resulting in the images being smaller than intended, but by now, it would have been a major job to enlarge the photos resulting in a re-jig of all the following text and pagenumbering. As the copy was of the main importance I decided to leave it as it was but you have confirmed that, with hindsight, I should have made the changes. I hadn't thought of a map locating where we lived but, again a valid point, maybe I should insert a loose leaf page into the book for future sales.

I loved the fact that you encouraged readers to write their own memoirs as this was the over-riding reason for writing the book.

Lastly, thank you for commenting so favourably on the cover photographs taken by me wearing my professional Sylvia Pitcher hat. I used my second married name of Weston for purposes of the book as I thought it was more appropriate for the project.

it’s a Long, Long Way to Tipperary ... And a long time ago to the start of World War One in August 1914

Sir, I was only a school-boy, some time after that war, of course, but I well-remember my dad singing his version of the popular Music Hall song, from his time in the trenches in Belgium, with the words corrupted to ‘It’s the wrong, wrong way to Tickle Mary’ etc.

Now, if ever I attend Remembrance parades and the tune comes up, I find myself actually singing his words again, but thankfully usually drownedout by the correct version, and the marching band.

Dispatches Ceramic Poppies

A major artistic installation entitled Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red will see the Tower of London’s famous dry moat filled with ceramic poppies, creating a powerful visual commemoration for the anniversary of the First World War. The installation, in collaboration with ceramic artist Paul Cummins and theatre stage designer Tom Piper, will be unveiled on 5th August, one hundred years since the first full day of Britain’s involvement in the War. There will be 888,246 poppies installed in the moat, one for each British and Colonial fatality during the war. The poppies will be available to buy for £25 each and the net proceeds (which are hoped to be in excess of £15 million if all poppies are sold) will be shared equally amongst a number of carefully selected Service charities.

1914 -1918 - Lights Out

The Royal British Legion invites you to take part in Lights Out, to remember those Commonwealth service men and women who lost their lives in the First World War.

A uk-wide event, Lights Out is an invitation to everyone to turn off their lights from 10pm to 11pm on 4 August, leaving on a single light or candle for a shared moment of reflection. Lights Out will be one of the largest mass participation events of its kind ever seen in the uk, and will complement a candlelit service held at Westminster Abbey on 4 August 2014.

Poppy appeal in Mere

With around 20 flower beds in Mere, Wiltshire, filled with red poppies to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1, manager of the Southern Co-operative store in the Square, Janet Avery and her Deputy katie Phelps have volunteered to

dead head and weed the three beds by the war memorial to keep the fabulous displays blooming in memory of the war’s fallen soldiers. The beds were planted by local nurseryman Clive Hazard.

A new glass cockpit will be complimented by an advanced avionic suite comprising a tactical processor, satellite based navigation system, traffic collision avoidance system, instrument landing system, radar warning receiver/electronic surveillance measures integrated with countermeasures dispensers and a full Night Vision Goggle compatible cockpit, together with a new electrically powered rescue hoist.

The 70th and final formal remembrance service of the 43rd Wessex Parades in Mere took place on Sunday 13th July. The event was well attended and the service was conducted by Mrs Jane Hurd, LLM in memory of the men of the 43rd (Wessex) division who gave their lives in Europe in 1944/45 especially at Hill 112, Caen in July 1944, the Division’s First Major Battle.

Mead Sport Centre will be running outdoor trim trail classes on Wednesdays 10am-11am and will meet at the Sports Centre before walking down to use the equipment and access the running route. The first three sessions are free to attend.

The project is the result of partnership working between Somerset County Councillor Tony Lock and various SSDC departments including Area Development, Engineering, Streetscene and Community Health & Leisure. Councillor Lock has given the project £4,500 from his Health and Wellbeing Grant fund. Speaking about the project, he said, ‘I’m pleased that through partnership working, we have been able to deliver fitness equipment that is free and accessible to all.

The project is an extension of the improvements that have been made to the park including new lighting and wider pathways. We hope that this project will encourage even greater use of the park and that local running and fitness groups will enjoy the new destination for outdoor fitness.’

A pupil from Chilton Cantelo School, in Somerset, has just become the uk champion to represent the country at a Microsoft office Specialist World Championship taking place in California.

Zachary Mustin, Year 9, won the Microsoft Excel competition against other children and adults across the country with a perfect score of 1,000 points and in the quickest time. Zachary will be flying to Disney World, California to take on the rest of the world. kevin Wagland, ICT Coordinator, said: ‘Chilton Cantelo started offering the Microsoft office Specialist course for the first time this year to help pupils acquire an ICT/Computing exam that was recognised in the workplace. The fact that Zac won an award as prestigious as this in our first year is remarkable.

Pupils have been taking exams in Powerpoint, Word and Excel and once these are completed pupils can go for ‘The Expert’ exam. This is usually taken up

by Year 10 pupils and older, but Zac did his in Year 9. I am very proud that one of our pupils will be representing the uk, and without putting any pressure on him, I have a sneaking suspicion that he will do extremely well.

We all wish him the best for the competition and hope we welcome back a World Champion in September.’

ISBN 978-1-78155-328-2. £12.99 I WAS BEGINNING to feel I was drowning in the deluge of TV programmes, newspaper supplements, books and articles commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War when yet another book arrived for review. So with no great enthusiasm I started to read it, but soon found it refreshingly different to the others I had ploughed through.

It’s not about the war – it’s about life in Yeovil during the war years and how people’s lives were affected by the war.

If you have read other local history books by Jack Sweet you will know that his principal source of information is the pages of the local newspapers. For this book he has trawled the issues from 1914 to 1919 and netted a substantial catch of stories, some of which he has then researched in greater detail and others he has used simply to portray the everyday activities of the townsfolk as the war dragged on.

Events such as establishing a

military hospital in the Baptist Memorial Hall, accommodating refugees fleeing from the German invasion of Belgium, the birth of Westland Aircraft Works and the resurrection of flax growing in the area to meet the demand for linen are all covered – and all set in the context of fund-raising events, road accidents, court cases, sports activities, snowstorms and suchlike.

Most of the material is presented chronologically, revealing that a growing number of young fighters were not returning from the conflict. By the Armistice more than 200 Yeovil men had lost their lives and several hundred more were seriously wounded. The final section of the book is devoted to the war memorials in Yeovil and Preston Plucknett, at that time a separate parish, and the stories behind some of the names recorded on them.

Jack’s publisher has done him proud with an attractive design and typography and with crisp printing on good-quality paper which has helped most of the old photographs to reproduce clearly.

It certainly looks good, feels good and reads well and I recommend it enthusiastically.

Babies - We pick up a mix of bacteria when we are born and it is important to ensure we get a good mix. Babies from vaginal births will be influenced by the health of their mother's microflora - which is why many women choose to supplement a probiotic during pregnancy. There are also some excellent baby probiotics on the market - some of which are backed by research demonstrating lower rates of allergic disorders such as atopic eczema and food/environmental allergies in babies on probiotics. I have also found babies with all kinds of digestive upsets can respond well to supplements.

Anti-biotics - As well as concerns about over-use of these drugs leading to anti-biotic resistant bacteria, the detrimental effects on our beneficial microflora can potentially lead to an overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria, leading to digestive upsets, diarrhoea and

candida. Conditions such as IBS may also flare up. Supplementing with a good probiotic is , I think, a must when on antibiotics. Start taking them concurrently to the antibiotics - leaving a couple of hours between the drug and the bacteria doses - and continue to supplement for 2-4 weeks after the anti-biotic course ends. iBs - Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common, yet poorly understood, functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. IBS can respond well to probiotic supplements. Symptoms such as bloating, pain, wind and changes in bowel habit can be very distressing. As stress itself can trigger symptoms sufferers may find themselves in a vicious cycle.

Stress management techniques, anti-spasmodic and soothing herbs plus a good probiotic are my foundation therapies for this condition.

Food vs supplement - When talking about almost anything else, I will always emphasise the importance of foods for nutrition being topped up by select nutrients at certain times. And to a degree that's still very true we have been eating fermented ‘live’ foods for many years and when you have access to them or wish to make your own such as with kefir then that’s fantastic

and I’d like to see it happen more!

For most people however, to get good yields of the right bacteria at their convenience - supplements work very well.

Which to Choose - There are hundreds of probiotic supplements on the market and hundreds of strains of bacteria for that matter! Beneficial microflora have been studied for many years now and we’re probably still in our infancy in understanding their role and the many combinations of bacteria that may help us when supplemented. That being said there are many excellent products on the market from basic, broad spectrum general use probiotics, to those that have been specifically designed and targeted at issues such as IBS, anti-biotic use, for infants, immunity, bloating, travelling and even for the management of cholesterol! I strongly recommended that if you’re considering taking probiotics (and most people can benefit at some point in their life) that you pop into your local health food store and have a chat with a trained advisor. They will help you get the right probiotic for your needs.

The Show that has a reputation for having more agri trade exhibitors than most of the multi day events, has received bookings from nine new agricultural exhibitors.

Livestock entries continue to increase year on year, sheep entries have broken all records, cattle entries look set to equal last years record with a number of new exhibitors supporting the recently introduced classes for Devon, South Devon and Longhorns.

The G & S Show is a show for the whole family. New features this year include the Homemaker Cookery Theatre featuring local chefs including David Shepherd from La Fleur de Lys restaurant in Shaftesbury. The Horticultural & Home-handicraft competitions with over 180 classes: from Iceberg lettuce to Iced cakes, and from Liqueurs to Lace. antiques, paintings and oriental carpets who lived just along the road in the ancient house called The Dogs, just beyond what is now the Community Church. It’s one of the most interesting houses in the town and you can catch a glimpse of it almost opposite the Catholic Church. It is uncertain when it was first named The Dogs but it was so called in 1805 and for many years a dog, carved in stone, stood on each pillar at the entrance gate. In his ‘History of Wincanton’, published in 1903, George Sweetman wrote that it was ‘undoubtedly the Manor House in the time of Richard Churchey, in 1678. But I digress. Dr Mattar converted the former shop into the Mattar Arcade to provide small retail units for traders wanting to get a toehold on the High Street, but this was not a long-term success. By 2012 it had been reconfigured into the spacious Cat Café which rapidly became popular as a venue for local music and arts as well as for tasty food, but sadly it was short-lived. Earlier this year, having been bought by Londonbased chef Geoff Redfearn, it was transformed into Redfearns – on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings a stylish restaurant specializing in Thai and Vietnamese cookery, and daily until 4.00pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays a café offering not only traditional breakfasts, sandwiches, snacks, coffees and cakes but also Asian specials and delicatessen. WINCANTON hoping it proves to be a successful addition to Wincanton’s wide range of shops.

The 1894 trade directory lists the occupants of the properties between Hannam’s Grocery and the New Inn (nowadays named the Nog Inn) as being a baker, a saddler and a florist and seedsman. In 2014 the occupants are a shop providing groceries and household goods for the town’s Polish community, a business hiring vintage chinaware for weddings and suchlike, and a Chinese takeaway. South Street, like the streets in the centres of every Visitorland town, reflects the changes in population, employment and shopping patterns, and will doubtless continue to change in the future.

This need not mean that the best of the past is discarded to

make way for the present. In Wincanton the impressive former coaching inn, the Greyhound on the Market Place, closed in 1957 and was subsequently converted for residential use with the attractive Greyhound Close mews at the back and a shop at the front, occupied these days by a colourful gallery of artwork and collectables. On an entirely different scale, the modest shop at 23 High Street on the corner of Carrrington Way was Ebenezer Carrington’s chemist shop for almost 40 years until the beginning of 1917. Since then it has been occupied by a variety of retailers including gents outfitters, dry cleaners and, in more recent years, a linen and

And a good time to enjoy it is the monthly Sunday street market when part of the High Street is closed to traffic. As well as the goodly number of market stalls many of the town centre shops open for the occasion, so there is plenty to see. The lady in the tourist information office thought the next one is on 17th August but advised me to check nearer the date, so watch the local papers for confirmation.

Another place to see an astonishing display of colour is Wincanton Garden Centre, around 500 yards beyond the racecourse on the road to Bruton.

For many years it was the longestablished Charlton Nurseries, a good old-fashioned nursery with

In 2008 it became Julian Shave’s Market Garden, remembered for its colourful display of shrubs and flowers on the pavement, and now it has reopened as a cakeshop stocked with everything the home baker needs to emulate Mary Berry. Yet the layout of the interior has not changed greatly since the days when, in the back part of the shop, Mr Carrington dispensed his pills, potions and remedies for all manner of aches and pains.

Although the Market Garden has gone (to Castle Cary where it adds plenty of colour to Fore Street), the centre of Wincanton is still full of colour from its trees, planters and hanging baskets.

WINCANTON acres of greenhouses crammed with an amazing variety of plants, and outdoors a huge selection of trees, shrubs, herbaceous and bedding plants.

Some years ago the business changed hands and was reopened as a garden centre, but with only limited success. Now it has been taken over by Otter Nurseries, a company with other garden centres in the south-west, and when I visited recently it was looking smart with plenty of healthy, colourful stock on sale, a

mecca for gardeners from many miles around. It’s easy to pass a sunny afternoon here simply browsing and enjoying the colours and scents, or exploring the wide range of garden furniture and homeware goods on display.

Our company's board has decided it needs some expert input to help with the next stage of expansion. We have approached an individual to act as a nonexecutive director. He wants to invoice us from his personal service company for that work, but I would rather pay him via our company's payroll. Which is the correct approach?

Robert Stone replies:

The work that individual performs through his personal service as an officer holder (i.e. director or non-executive director) is now subject to IR35, which means his company must apply PAYE and NIC to that income earned as a non-exec. The tax and

NI the individual ultimately bears will be the same; whether his company invoices your company, or if your company pays him via its payroll. There is no "correct" approach.

Q2. I am thinking of selling a flat that has been let since I acquired it in 2012. I do not own another property. My tenant is moving out soon, after which I will either stay in it myself or sell it. Will I get lettings relief to reduce the capital gains tax (CGT) payable?

Robert Stone replies:

Lettings relief only applies if you have lived in the property as your main home for some period. So if your tenant moves out and you sell the property immediately you will not get lettings relief, or any relief from CGT, other than the annual exemption.

Leisure & Tra vel Cycle-Babble THE qUITE FANTASTIC pictures of the Tour de France's wonderful Grand Depart in Yorkshire that were beamed around the world at the beginning of July will linger long in the memory of every cycling fan who saw them. The millions of people that gathered to watch the Tour pass by made for a stunning launch to the world's greatest bike race, a fact recognised by the Tour's Director, Christian Prudhomme, who described Yorkshire's effort as being ‘beyond his wildest imagination,’ raising the bar for all future hosts of the Tour.

But, as the thoughts of the Tour start to turn to Utrecht, scene of 2015's Grand Depart, there is no let up in major bike races being hosted in our country, as a British summer of sensational cycling action continues apace.

The Commonwealth Games' cycling programme starts the day after the opening ceremony, with the riders hitting the track for four days of intense action.

Competition will be particularly fierce between the teams of England, Wales, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, with many of the stars of London 2012 taking to the boards, including the likes of Laura Trott, Jason Kenny, Jo Rowsell and Dani King, who will all be riding for England.

The track programme, featuring the usual mix of sprint and endurance events, is an attractive one, but it is a real shame that the policy of parity between men's and women's events that proved so successful at London, has not been mirrored at Glasgow.

There are ten gold medals on offer for the men in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, but only seven for the women. The biggest omission from the women's

programme is the Team Pursuit, depriving fans of being able to watch the finest female pursuit riders in the world showcase their skills, riding just millimetres from each other's wheels as they tear around the track in a seamless rotation. It was one of the standout events at London and it is a shocking error for it not to be included at Glasgow, with the likes of Rowsell and Trott having to instead content themselves with riding for individual pursuit honours.

On the plus side, para cycling makes its debut on the track at the Commonwealths, with tandem sprint events on day one

for both men and women.

The action then heads outside, with mountain bike races at Cathkin Braes Country Park, where a challenging course, with ominously named features such as Brig O’Doom and Broken Biscuits, lies in wait. The cycling events then conclude with the road programme which features both individual time trials and road races for men and women.

All eyes there will surely be on Sir Bradley Wiggins as he looks to replicate his Olympic success in the time trial following his somewhat controversial absence from Team Sky's line-up for this year's Tour de France.

L&T The Commonwealths finish on 3rd August and then attention shifts south for Prudential's RideLondon weekend, which takes place on 9th and 10th August.

It is only the second year for the event, but it has already cemented its place in the nation's cycling calendar, winning an armful of awards for its inaugural edition, and expectations for 2014 are similarly high, with a world-class field again expected to take part.

Established as a legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games, the weekend kicks off with a FreeCycle, allowing families to enjoy riding on traffic-free roads on a circuit taking in the iconic sights of Central London. The FreeCycle is followed by the RideLondon Grand Prix, a series of criterium races, the highlight of which is the women's race that will include the top female professionals. Britain's Laura Trott will again be in action, seeking to defend the title she won in 2013, whilst the top rider in the world, Marianne Vos, will be looking to add the win to her unbelievably impressive haul of victories. Lizzie Armitstead, who was pipped to Olympic Gold by Vos on the same London roads in 2012, will be trying to reverse the fortunes of two years ago.

The following day features a 100-mile amateur race, followed by the RideLondon-Surrey Classic. The 200km race will feature 150 riders from the world's top 25 teams. Starting at the queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and finishing on the Mall, the route is based upon the 2012 Olympic road race course and will make for a fascinating race.

Don’t be a victim of Oil Theft in the Summer Holidays

Domestic oil theft is on the rise.

That’s the message from oil heating trade association FPS (Federation of Petroleum Suppliers) urging domestic oil consumers to be extra vigilant when it comes to safeguarding their supply during the summer holiday period.

The oil in your tank is a valuable resource, which could lead to its theft during the summer months when people leave their property empty while on holiday, and such thefts are showing a rise in frequency. One look at the local newspapers and police reports will confirm that it’s a phenomenon that’s ha p p e ni ng ri g ht a cro ss t he country.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to reduce the risk of oil theft. The FPS has the following advice for consumers: 1. If your tank has a lid, fit locks.

This may be a legal requirement for some tanks.

Your tank installation engineer or fuel delivery company will be able to advise you.

2. Consumers with the ‘vent and fill’ design should fit the lockable cap designed to

Of course, locking your tank may prevent your supplier from filling your tank if you’re not at home, so make sure your supplier has a key or code for access.

3. Monitor your oil tank on a regular basis. Remote electronic oil level gauges are available which will set off an

audible alarm if the oil level in the tank suddenly drops or falls below a quarter full.

These gauges can be located in the kitchen or perhaps a utility room to warn of any potential problem.

4.If you belong to a neighbourhood watch scheme you can discuss this issue of oil theft with your group co-

ordinator so that everyone of the scheme can be vigilant.

5. If the need arises to replace your tank, consider where you position the tank and make more secure. But remember to leave clear access for the delivery man at the fill point and the gauge can be seen.

6. You must never lock or block the tank vent / breather, as this will cause the tank to split and cause further damage.

7. Consider fitting CCTV to monitor the tank.

8. Security lights can have a very positive effect and make any property a much harder target for the thief. It’s not always

necessary to floodlight the area with high power beams, as a more subtle level of lighting may be all that is needed. Low energy ‘dusk till dawn’ lights positioned close to the tank should, in most cases, provide sufficient light to illuminate any suspicious activity. This type of light can be both effective and inexpensive. High powered lights can be used but care should be taken not to cause any nuisance to neighbours or road users.

Tips for keeping food fresh in the kitchen

Some of this can be overcome by keeping your kitchen organised and rotating your food, rather than just putting your weekly shopping at the front of the cupboard or at the top of the freezer. A bit of time may be needed when packing the weekly shop away, but it will be time well spent.

Some people may prefer an upright freezer with drawers which will make this much easier rather than having to take everything out to put the new products at the bottom. Drawers or pull-out larder units in the kitchen will make it easier to rotate tinned and bottled products rather than struggling at the back of a cupboard.

Storing items correctly will probably help prolong their life and freshness. Most fridges and freezers will give an idea on the door or in the user’s manual of how best you should store the food in them.

Never cram a fridge too full either as it is important that air can circulate inside. If not this may affect the cooling of the fridge.

Make sure your fridge is kept at a temperature of below 5ºC and your freezer minus 15ºC to minus 18ºC. Any food placed in your fridge or freezer must be cold before being put in because placing warm food in a fridge or freezer will raise the temperature and have a detrimental effect on the food already stored.

Never keep raw and cooked meats together always keep raw meats at the bottom of the fridge to stop any juices dripping on any other food in the fridge. If

Taking the Right Solar Decision

Now that the Government has finally launched the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, offering homeowners payments to offset the cost of installing low carbon systems in their properties, there will be renewed interest in installing solar thermal water heating systems, as it is one of the four renewable energy technologies eligible under the scheme, with payments to householders fixed at 19.2p/kWh. The guaranteed payments are made quarterly over seven years for households in England, Wales and Scotland (Northern Ireland has its own RHI scheme).

But the Building & Engineering Services Association (B&ES), who operate the free consumer advice service the Heating Helpline (http://www. heatinghelpline.org.uk), say that homeowners should not ‘rush in’ but should take time to make the right decision.

David Frise, Head of Sustainability at B&ES, comments, ‘Before beginning a solar panel installation it is important to give a lot of thought to location in order to ensure maximum efficiency from the panels. Solar panels need to be

installed so that they are exposed to as much direct sunlight as possible over the course of a day.

It is also important to install solar

panels in a location where they won’t be partially or completely shaded during part of the day.

The more direct sunlight that is

shining on solar panels, the more effective they are.

WHENEVER WE HEAR, or see, an advert for alcohol then we are also subjected to all the propaganda about ‘responsible drinking’. Unfortunately having spent too much time researching the subject all I have found is socalled authorities on the subject disagreeing with each other. I think we all realise that there is nothing like getting a couple of ‘experts’ together to hear polarized opinions. Who are these people who are supposed to be ‘binge drinking’ anyway? We are told that casualty units fill up on

a Saturday night with those who have been drinking too much and fighting each other. Well that’s nothing new, and going back over time, and despite regular reports on the television portraying the masses becoming commodehugging drunk on a Friday and Saturday, alcohol consumption has been falling continually for a long time. There was a trend of the media to blame all this ‘binge drinking’ on the newly passed law that allows a pub to stay open for 24 hours. How many pubs have you heard of that do stay open for that amount of time? No; me neither, in fact the average time pubs do stay open after the ‘old hours’ disappeared is less than half-an-hour extra.

Further to my reporting of the prosecutions for ‘treating’ during the First World War, when anyone caught by the authorities for buying another person a drink, I read of a successful prosecution made in Bristol where a man was caught buying a drink for his wife! I cannot think that such lunatic behaviour by those in power would have enhanced the desire of anyone to go out and fight for their country.

After all, surely this would be looked at as ‘So this is what we are fighting for?’ Landlords were also forbidden to serve spirit

chasers, and giving credit was also outlawed. Clearly ‘Big Brother’ was skulking around the pubs when George Orwell was only just into his teens. Another action that has come to light is that landlords and bar staff were banned from carrying out ‘a long pull’. This referred to serving an over-measure of beer in a way that was supposed to encourage the customers to come back by virtue of the fact they were getting that little extra. How things have changed, whereas

now when one gets shortmeasured (and CAMRA estimate £1,000,000 worth of fresh air is sold to beer drinkers every day) we have to ask for a top-up or we don’t go back to that particular pub again. For those of the populace lacking in the necessary manly attributes, there is always the option to remain silent (you know who you are – so man-up for Heaven’s sake!) Whether the ban of the over-measure is still in force I know not – perhaps someone in the trade can drop

me a line at skittlealley @hotmail.com Whilst we are sort-of on the peripheries of the law here, I must mention the fact that the 470-plus All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group is the largest, with some 300 getting together for, well, drinking beer, I would like to think. However, it proves just how naïve one can get. It really is ‘to represent the interests of the pub and brewing interests at a political level’ according to an article in the ‘Morning Advertiser’ a magazine for the publican. The present chairman, Andrew Griffiths, is MP for the Staffordshire constituency of Burton-on-Trent and Uttoxeter which have such major brewers as Molson Coors (who now own

Sharps Brewery of Cornwall, producers of ‘Doom Bar’) and Marston’s, who own several brands and breweries. He does declare an interest and love of good ale and pubs and at one time worked in Brussels. As we have mentioned in this column on many an occasion, they love their beer in Belgium and are rightly proud of it. He declared ‘They have enough beers there to have a different beer every day of the year, and in that five years (that he was there) I was trying the range. I loved how they celebrate beer over there’. Well, lucky old him! I suppose it is the ‘done thing’ now but he has declared an interest in ‘Punch’ and ‘Spirit’ (I cannot say I have heard of the latter), but nevertheless is not backward at being critical of the way some pubcos behave. He does back an independent review, but as we have said before, Government makes all sorts of promises upon which we still await.

News has reached me of alleged underhandedness by Marston’s as I write this, where a tenant of a Marston’s pub, despite having an agreement that stretches until June 2016, found to his chagrin that Marston’s were offering it for sale, vacant possession.

Pictures have appeared of the pub sign, complete with the ‘For sale’ sign attached to it. This has not done any favours to the pubs trade as the landlord, David Andrews, says even the locals think it’s been sold and are staying away. Marston’s say that the full facts have not been made clear and that they are ‘in discussions’ with Mr. Andrews.

Personally I would not be very happy to see a ‘For Sale’ sign outside my home without my knowledge – what say you?

However on a recent visit to the sea-side (Paignton to be precise) we visited a hostelry that if we had not known any better could easily have been mistaken for one within the Wetherspoons estate.

I suppose also it could have been declared a ‘theme’ pub. So what was the theme? Er … a pub! I just have the impression that to make it look like the place had grown organically, there was lots of semi-nautical stuff (i.e. mainly ‘tat’) to make it look like it had grown up like it. Well, as it

Apart from the football we have had quite a good time here at the top of the hill. Darren and Mandy Charles celebrated their 25th Wedding Anniversary in style with some great food, a few drinks, a few tunes, and loads and loads of good friends. Well done you two! Fai Leeds celebrated her 30th birthday with loads of mates, some great music, and some fabulous Thai food.

We have got loads going on in August, so better crack on and tell you all about it. On the 1st of August we have an RSPCA fund raiser with the fabulous Barry Paull doing his Elvis Show.

Tickets are £5 and that is for a very good cause. On the 15th of August we have BUG SWAMP FEST featuring BB Tim. They were great last time and you don’t want to miss them this time  .

On Thursday 21st we have a brand new comedy show featuring Jimmy Quinn and Charlie Seaton known as Wrong Direction. This will be the first gig that they have done in Yeovil so get yer tickets fast, £5.

On Sunday 24th of August we have STORM playing their annual bank holiday gig. No work on Monday so come along and see Yeovil’s premier Rock Covers Band. On the last Friday of August (29th) Mutter Slater will be live in the bar.

And finally: last night me and my girlfriend watched three DVDs back to back. Luckily I was the one facing the telly!!!  TOOT TOOT!!!

appeared that the building was probably of the Georgian era originally, then perhaps it really didn’t work as was intended, but nevertheless, the food was fine, the beer also very drinkable and the staff friendly and efficient.

We were slightly out of season, so there were not hoards of holidaymakers about and it was quite pleasant. Even though I usually refrain from beers at lunchtime, we were on a daybreak and whilst the girls had a cider (and something declaring it to be a ‘pear cider’) us boys had Timothy Taylors Landlord (a classic, but not my choice for lunchtime) and I had a Brakspears Bitter, which at only 3.4%ABV and still with plenty of flavour - and a lovely long bitter finish – makes it just up my street. The beer is made by the system called ‘double drop’ where it is fermented once in circular vessels before being ‘dropped’ into other lower wooden fermenters. This is fully described on their web-site and there is even a video describing the characteristics of the ale. Do take a look. (Oh yes; and it’s pronounced ‘BREAk-spear!)

Summer is here so whilst we have the chance, the Baxter crew is going to be outside, with cool pints in their hands, playing Bat and Trap, Boules, and even bowls.

I hope you all are making the most of it, and now as time is going on I’m away to the pub, where I can assure both of my readers that I shall be ‘drinking responsibly’ which to my mind means that I shall be very careful not to spill it. Not one drop.

Motor VINtAGE Motor Cycling AUGUsT is just around the corner and the summer season zooms by so fast and already the evenings are drawing-in, every reason then to make sure you get the best use of your old vehicles. August is always a busy time for events.

The somerset section has its club night at cossington on the 7th and this is followed on the 10th by the sign Post Rally and social Run from creech st Michael. The 15th sees an evening Meet at Ashcott. The Wessex Veteran and Vintage section has its club night on the 11th. The Dorset section has the Pre73 Border Run from Gillingham on the 3rd, then the Lunch Meet at West stour on the 6th. club night at Pulham on the 13th will be an Autojumble and Barbecue, then a Mid Week Run from Wincanton on the 20th, and lastly the Breakfast Meet on the 30th. What a busy social life we have. other clubs are equally busy. The Westlands classic Motor cycle club has its sunflower Run on August 30th and starts from the Rugby Ground, A37 at Yeovil. organised to raise funds for the st.

Margaret’s Hospice at Yeovil, you can take part and have a jolly good day out and help others in the process. The Wells classic club team up with the Taunton and District club on the 10th August for their exmoor Run. Beautiful scenery will be guaranteed for this event.

Another event not to be missed is the Rotary clubs of sherborne Vintage Vehicle Rally on sunday 24th August. The start and finish venue at The Quad, sherborne school, cannot be bettered. A road run in the morning is followed by an assembly of cars, vans and motorcycles in the afternoon. A nice tea is provided for all entrants

plus the opportunity to relax in these fine surroundings and listen to the sherborne Town Band whilst enjoying an ice cream or cup of tea/coffee and chatting to friends. A really good day out for all the family, this event has been poorly supported by motorcycle entries in recent years so why not give it a try this year, you will not be disappointed. All monies raised go to local charities. for more details on any of the above events ring 01935-872528.

The Jeff clew Memorial Run went ahead as planned on the 29th June. 68 entrants took part and had a thoroughly good days riding in near perfect weather conditions. We were joined by Jeff’s two daughters, Alison and Pippa, who with our clubs national President (Tim Penn) gave out the prizes. At the run an interested spectator, Roger stow who lives near Bristol, spoke fondly of the machines he saw and reminisced of his own machines of long ago.

During the conversations it became known that he would love to have another ride on a bike but was unlikely to do so because of poor health. A situation which called for some action. Within a few minutes a plan evolved. colin Bentham from somerset volunteered to lend a machine for him to ride, but where could he go to have this ride other than on a road? The Haynes Motor Museum came to the rescue by allowing us to use the track at the museum. With all arrangements in place on the 9th July Roger, accompanied by his wife, daughter and son-in-law duly arrived at the museum and colin duly obliged with the loan of his 1952 Triumph Trophy. When fully kitted up a nervous Roger took to the track but within a few moments he was riding and handling the machine as in years of old. But this time he had the biggest smile on his face that anyone could imagine. To say he enjoyed his ride is something of an understatement. His family,

colin and myself were delighted to have helped in this way and his beaming smile was thanks enough for anything we had done. A big thank you to colin for the loan of the bike and grateful thanks to the Haynes Motor Museum for allowing the use of their track area. My picture this month shows Roger enjoying his ride.

The above story illustrates clearly the comradeship engendered among old bike enthusiasts. Always when the bikes are parked within minutes someone is there reminiscing of the machines they once had or their fathers or uncles had owned many years ago and eventually sold for two pounds and ten bob (£2.50p for those younger of heart). owners of all old vehicles are always willing to stop and chat about their prized possessions. If and when you see us around do please come and make yourself known, that way you may rekindle an old interest and we potentially might encourage you to get more involved and become members.

Just do not ask how fast it will go or how much is it worth. Both are questions for which we rarely have a true answer.

I moan about this every year and still the practice continues.

My concern is that in hot weather riders venture out inadequately dressed. Helmets of course are a legal requirement but riding in soft shoes, tee shirts and shorts is utter madness. With no protection even a minor tumble can result in serious gravel rash type injuries, or worse. Please will all riders take note of this warning for their own wellbeing. I would not like to see legislation on this subject because it would be overly complicated to define what is or is not proper protective clothing, but surely common sense would ensure most riders do the sensible thing. obviously this message has not reached everyone yet but I will keep on trying. I must close now as my hobbyhorse needs returning to its stable. Good riding everyone.

Dine Athletes & Alcohol

I confess to not being a sports fan; at all. However, for those that are, this summer seems to have been quite exceptional in terms of the breadth of sporting activities available for viewers, if not for participants. so far we have had the World cup, Wimbledon, the Tour de france, the Grand Prix, and now bringing up the rear, The commonwealth Games, in Glasgow.

Being a wine writer and tutor, I am always interested in the connection between alcohol and the context in which people from all walks of life choose to imbibe, or not, so it seemed natural to delve into just what was being served north of the border.

As one might expect, for Glasgow 2014, the organisers have been keen to promote scottish products. There are a number of 'official' drink sponsors, including the famous Irn-Bru, strathmore scottish spring water, and of course whisky, where famous Grouse have managed to secure a deal, alongside Heineken, the official beer and cider provider. for spectators, at the top end there were hospitality packages on offer for up to £575 a time to attend the opening ceremony.

Despite several calls to the company organising the events, it was really disappointing not to be able to find out what drinks were going to be on offer. Their reluctance to respond does make me wonder what they might be trying to hide. If my own experience of similar events recently is anything to go by, it does not bode well for lovers of decent quality wine.

In considering the performance of some of the top athletes tipped to win in their chosen events, I have been aiming to discover more about their drinking habits. expectations are high for all athletes, and it is heartening to see that Glaswegian swimmer Michael Jamieson, admits to not drinking at all when he's training, along with fellow competitor Hannah Miley; however, this is not quite the case for all competitors. sprinter Usain Bolt needs little

introduction, especially since Richard Branson has harnessed his distinctive style to advertise Virgin products. criticised by fans for being caught guzzling beer, it seems that Usain’s favourite tipple is in fact a drop of the good stuff, Guinness. Given that not so long ago maternity hospitals used to give new mums stout to drink on the wards, perhaps there is something in that. It certainly seems that everything Usain touches does indeed turn to gold, as his endorsement of energy drink Gatorade has seen sales go through the roof in his home country of Jamaica. Brownlee brothers (Alistair and Jonathan), both english triathletes, also drink Gatorade, maintaining that it contains calcium for your bones, protein for your muscles and electrolytes to aid recovery.

Mo farah runs for england, but was born in sudan, where as an Islamic country, alcohol is officially banned. However, the cloudy, locally brewed beer, ‘merissa’, made from millet, could be on offer, although as it is made from untreated water, and to avoid the inevitable stomach upset, a better bet might be the potent 'aragi', a pure spirit distilled from dates. not wanting to suffer the mother of all

hangovers, or break the law, a delicious alternative to the ubiquitous tea might be 'karkadeh' tea, red in colour, and made from Hibiscus flowers. swimmer chad Le clos, from south Africa, celebrated his 21st birthday at czar nightclub in Durban, with Red Bull drinks on arrival (yuk!) followed by sparkling wine from The House of J c le Roux, produced near stellenbosch, in the wine-growing region of the cape. Described as having all the fresh, crisp, character of sauvignon blanc, combined with the sweetness of the Muscadel, and low in alcohol, at just £10.99 it's unlikely to break the bank. english boxer nicola Adams admits to chilling out with her friends and downing the odd vodka and lemonade, so she might consider hooking up with Mark cavendish, the Manx cyclist, who extols the benefits of vodka and soda, saying 'I only drink alcohol for five weeks a year, in my off-season. When I drink, I go for a vodka and soda, the purest drink you can get. It doesn’t give you a headache or heavy legs the next day.'

Tom Daley, england's diving hope, appears not to be your typical young man. In one

interview he declared that he thinks alcohol is 'disgusting', and that the only time he had tried alcohol was on his 16th birthday, when his mum gave him a sip of champagne. He maintains that when he goes to parties he just drinks coke or orange juice. His comments echo the views of others I speak to, and as all champagnes are not equal, I would argue that his dislike of champagne may well stem from the particular brand he was offered, rather than a blanket distaste for it.

In summing up my admittedly rather cursory, but time consuming investigations it would seem that in most cases sports stars at the top of their game

We became an island 450,000 years ago when a massive prehistoric river carved through the chalk hills between what is now southern england and northern france. since then we have not been part of mainland europe as such and have not had the continental climate we might have had!

The importance of soil health is really obvious in dry periods. soils with lots of organic matter in them and even better, soils with a good layer of mulch, hold their moisture longer and produce better crops. The investment in compost or bark is easily paid off by the improvement in the plants that are grown, and that’s all there is to it. If you don’t want to buy ready made compost and lug heavy bags from garden centre to garden, and if you don’t have a friendly farmer neighbour, then you should be making your own compost. Invest in 2 good sized compost bins, plastic, wood, metal; whatever you prefer, and

GARDENING The flowers normally consist of a mass of fertile flowers surrounded by infertile flowers which give the hydrangea its large flower heads. Hydrangeas are recommended for the amateur and the experienced gardener alike.

Mop head hydrangeas (with rounded heads of large flowers) come from Japan where the native species with lace cap flowers (flattened heads of large flowers) have been grown for hundreds of years. When these

plants reached the west in the eighteenth century they caused a sensation, initially treated as tender and grown indoors. There are now many, many varieties to choose from.

Soils for Colour - With Hydrangeas, the soil type determines the colour. Acid soils for example produce blue flowers.

To create blue flowers on a chalky soil, use a blueing compound composed of aluminium sulphate.

This can be purchased at your local garden centre. However, the results won’t compare with plants growing in a naturally acid soil.

Alternatively, you could grow a compact variety such as ‘Blue

Bird’ in a large container filled with ericaceous compost and supplement its liquid feed with a blueing compound.

Site & Watering Hydrangeas are true survivors and can be often seen flowering in overgrown and neglected gardens.

Mop heads and Lace caps prefer dappled shade against a north or west facing wall. If it is too bright they are likely to scorch. Their leafy shoots need plenty of moisture during the summer, apply a mulch of well-rotted compost to drier soils to help lock in moisture and promote decent sized flowers. Plants also need to be sheltered from cold winds

Pruning - Pruning isn’t essential but can be done each spring as new shoots appear.

With established plants, just remove one third of the older, less productive stems and cut back old flowering stems to a strong pair of buds.

Leave old flower heads on over winter to provide frost protection for new growth. The brown papery domes look great when covered with hoar frost.

In the fruit garden – early and mid-season strawberry plants need to be cut back tidied up and mulched to get the plants to recover after their exertion. summer fruiting raspberry canes should be removed so that the new canes can grow well enough to be trained for next year’s crop. summer pruning is every bit as important as winter pruning and is absolutely essential for fan trained peaches, nectarines and cherries, as well as for espalier and cordon apples and pears.

grow. If you are short of time you can always get the hedge trimmer out to take back the superfluous growth that is draining the plants and deflecting goodness from the fruit crop. Then trim back properly later in the year. While you have the secateurs handy and if you have a wisteria then apply the same rules to that and follow up with a further pruning in January.

Vegetable gardens – regular picking helps production – if you don’t pick then the plant will assume that no more is needed which will leave you a few leaves short in the veg trug! onions, shallots and garlic should be lifted and left in the sun to dry for better storage. Wet bulbs will rot. check potatoes and tomatoes for blight – any brown spotted and blotched leaves should be removed and burnt. finish lifting early and second early potatoes before either the blight or the slugs make them unusable. caterpillars will strip a Brassica plant in no time. check to see if they’re there. either pick them off, or spray with pyrethrum [plant derived insecticide] or a manufactured product such as Provado Ultimate Bug Killer]. crops are really best covered with a fine mesh cover.

There is still time to sow salad and leaf crops for harvest this year. Radish, spinach, lettuce, parsley and rocket as well as herbs such as coriander and chervil. ornamental pots and planters need regular feeding and watering. It is asking a lot of any plant to have 6 months flowering – so give them regular attention.

THe sUMMeR issue of Your Somerset arrived with the mail a week or two ago. for readers in the Dorset part of Visitorland I should explain that this is the 16-page quarterly tabloid freebie from somerset county council.

It’s certainly colourful, garishly so on some pages, but with large type, large illustrations, large areas of white or tinted space and three pages of advertisements, the editorial content is somewhat sparse. It’s mainly brief statements with very little detail, and the quality of writing leaves a lot to be desired. on page 12 we’re informed that ‘new motorbike speed cameras, nine mobile speed enforcement vans and digital speed cameras being switched back on are all

afraid of the long-awaited neat & evenly footed, low-methane grass-eating animal that will do this job for us. Has to come one

part of a renewed focus to tackle speeding by the police’. It’s not speeding by the police that worries many residents of rural somerset, who don’t see a police vehicle from one month’s end to the next. It’s the daily speeding by boy racers, van drivers and the general public that’s our concern. And on page 2 editor Lauren fellingham tells us that ‘I was part of the team that represented somerset county council at this year’s Royal Bath and West show’ and asks ‘did you know the show is one of the biggest single attraction (sic) for visitors outside our own county?’

I suspect we all know that the show is an attraction inside, not outside, somerset for visitors from outside the county, but that’s not what she has written.
