W

ith the price of a litre of fuel fast approaching £2 a trip in the car is becoming a costly pleasure if you’re heading for the coast or further afield. But you don’t need to travel far to find pleasure in gentle hills and vales, a colourful tapestry of fields and woods, sleepy villages, birdsong and the gentle hum of honey bees – perhaps what William Blake had in mind when he wrote of ‘England’s green and pleasant land’. This archetypal rural English landscape is right here in Visitorland in what a marketing man once christened Camelot Country.

Drivers speeding along the A303 between Wincanton and Sparkford may catch a passing glimpse of the flat-topped hill that is Cadbury Castle, King Arthur’s Camelot, but it’s all too easy for them to miss the countryside that lies hidden on both sides of the trunk road.

When the weather is kind it’s an area to be explored at a leisurely pace, by car and on foot, stopping for half an hour here, fifteen minutes there, when something takes your fancy – a village church or shop perhaps, or a country pub, or some cottages with glorious gardens, or a handsome country house, or a spectacular panoramic view. The area is a mecca for walkers. Take a glance at the OS ‘Explorer’ map of the area (sheet 129) and you’ll see that Camelot Country is criss-crossed by innumerable paths for those wishing to explore on foot.

North of the A303 the land rises gently to North Cadbury with the elegant Elizabethan Cadbury Court and the fine 15th century collegiate church famed for its unusual carved bench-ends. Beyond is Yarlington, set in a secluded hollow and little more than a small cluster of houses around a church with a fine pinnacled 15th century tower and an unpretentious homely pub with a growing reputation for good food.

The countryside south of the A303 is altogether different. This is hill country, etched with innumerable narrow lanes weaving their way between high hedges

from farm to farm, village to village. South Cadbury at the foot of Cadbury Castle is a sleepy little village with a church dating from the 13th century. Beyond the churchyard a steep path leads to the top of the hill and it’s well worth the climb for the breathtaking panoramic views in all directions. South of the hill is the photogenic Corton Denham lying in a fold of the hills. Although the village church and pub are both Victorian buildings they give the impression of having been integral parts of the rural scene for very much longer. Beyond is Sandford Orcas with a 16th century manor house and impressive gatehouse next to the church, countless attractive old stone houses and a delightful pub.

There are many more lovely places in Camelot Country for you to discover. To make the most of your day out, drive a while, walk where your fancy takes you, and stop at a country pub for a long lunch.

Masterchef winner calls on readers to join Afternoon Tea for Breast Cancer Now

Sir, People with breast cancer need you. And they need you now.

Every year, around 55,000 women and 370 men in the UK have their lives turned upside down by a breast cancer diagnosis. In 2007 I experienced this first hand when I was told I had the disease.

Nearly five years after I finished treatment I was diagnosed with secondary (metastatic) breast cancer which had spread to my liver. Secondary breast cancer can be treated but cannot be cured.

I’ve worked with the charity Breast Cancer Now for a long time because they’ve been with me right from the start. That’s why I’m calling on readers to join me this August by hosting an Afternoon Tea. Afternoon Tea is Breast Cancer Now’s annual fundraising event, that gives you a chance to get together with friends, family or colleagues over

a cake in the garden, or a picnic in the park, to raise money for charity.

Money raised will help Breast Cancer Now continue to provide award-winning health information, fund cutting-edge research projects, and give someone much-needed reassurance on their Helpline, which I know from calling the team myself, can make all the difference.

Research into finding new treatments is incredibly important and everyday Breast Cancer Now’s research in the lab brings us closer to a future where everyone with breast cancer lives and is supported to live well. By hosting an Afternoon Tea, you can raise vital funds to help researchers get there faster.

I’ve previously hosted an Afternoon Tea and loved being able to invite friends over to share in my passion with food, whilst raising money for a cause close to my heart.

Sir, Due to the 2 year Covid-19 pandemic community events such as Carnival have been seriously impacted. Castle Cary was one of the few Carnivals last year to stage a successful Carnival with no Carts (floats)! This year there will be the Wessex Club Carts, including Cary Comedians, back to add their unique splendour to carnival with great illuminated carts.

The Children's Carnival, now organised by Sue Pexton, will doubtless be another success, but each year the costs go up and we do need more members, helpers and performers for the clubs to ensure that this magical time in October each year stimulates the community and the local economy.

The Visitor itself provides a great advert to our area and we thank them, with the late Roger Otton, for its creation, continuation, and with its immense value to us all.

The Ilminster Thursday Group arranges a series of general interest talks on Thursday mornings from the autumn until the spring

The Ilminster Thursday Group is an independent local group of mainly retired people which began its 40-year life at Dillington House. From the early days when just a few members gathered for weekly talks, they now have a membership of usually around 200. Their permanent home is the Warehouse Theatre, Brewery Lane, Ilminster TA19 9AD, which has raked seats and excellent speaking and presentation facilities. They stage twenty weekly talks each year; ten during the autumn and ten during the spring. These begin at 10.15am and generally last for about 60 minutes with time afterwards for questions. Teas and coffees are available from 9.15am.

It is their policy to provide a balanced programme of talks and to encourage, where possible, local experts to share something of their knowledge and enthusiasms. Talks are not limited to local interests and each programme will include subjects which range over a wide spectrum of knowledge.

At the Museum of Somerset visitors can explore the wild worlds of Myths and Monsters in a new exhibition featuring artwork from some of our bestloved children’s stories. The exhibition brings together over 70 artworks by 17 of the most celebrated children’s book illustrators. Star contributors include: Axel Scheffler – The Gruffalo, Jim Kay – A Monster Calls, Chris Mould – The Iron

Man and Victoria Topping Mythologica: An encyclopedia of gods, monsters and mortals from ancient Greece. The exhibition is created in collaboration with Events of Wonder.

Alongside the exhibition, young visitors can discover The Museum of Marvellous Things with interactive storytelling, activities, and a trail created by author and illustrator Kristina Stephenson.

Children are also being invited to create a ‘Monster in a Jar’ which will go on display in the exhibition. There are lots of creative activities too, including making dream catchers, monster masks and finger puppets.

At Somerset Rural Life Museum visitors are being invited to join the party with a celebration of festivals and fetes.

This summer the Glastonbury

Festival returned after a two-year absence and the museum is marking the event with a display of photos. ‘Music, Mud, Mayhem: Photographing Glastonbury Festival’ brings together images from 20 years of the iconic festival. They have been captured

by Somerset-based photographer Jason Bryant who has chosen his personal favourites for the exhibition.

For families there will be festival vibes with themed activities taking place throughout the holiday. as a subject the changing character of Gillingham in earlier times. The project is a coming together of The Slade Centre and the Gillingham Museum, which will be supplying the items on display.

Images of Gillingham Past explores the town from Victorian times to later decades through the lenses of its past photographers and the brushes of local artists. The core of the exhibition is the large collection of postcards and other street photographs held in the Museum, many of which were taken by local photography businesses and sold from their premises. Some of these pictures are arranged as vistas, allowing the town scene

A group of residents and friends have been working on an overgrown plot in the centre of the Village, to turn it into a village amenity, for all, to be called the ‘Jubilee Nature Garden’ work is ongoing, and more funds are needed.

Nick Rees - 50 Years a Potter: An exhibition at Muchelney Pottery 23 July - 24 September

Nick began his career at Muchelney Pottery in July 1972 and retired in July 2018; 46 years as John Leach's right-hand man producing the catalogue range of kitchenware pots. It is said that potters never fully retire and Nick is no exception; continuing to throw his individual pieces at his home workshop and electric firing them.

Nick says “I never tire of exploring the subtleties of form; for example, how a shape can change at the top of a pot by the process of taking away a little more clay in its lower part. The visual volume changes with even the slightest adjustment of

Bargain reds for BBQ’s

AS A LONG-standing member of the Rotary Wine Appreciation Fellowship, which numbers hundreds of members from across the world, I frequently receive news of what is happening in the wider wine world.

We are all looking for a bargain in the face of rising prices, and each month RWAF members are provided with recommendations of value wines, all highly rated by experts such as the Wine Spectator, IWC and Robert Parker.

So, this month I thought I would share these suggestions with readers.

I continue to be frustrated by online search engines, so have done the homework for you and can confirm that at the time of writing all of these wines are available in the UK. And while on the subject, why on earth does someone need to be over 18 just to read about wine? Absolute nonsense!

If only the sun could make a more consistent appearance this summer, these reds would be an ideal accompaniment for a BBQ.

Waterdog Reserva, Setúbal, Portugal, 2018, 13%abv., £13.58

This family-owned wine producer was established in 1834, and takes its name from its founder, José Maria da Fonseca. Its first wine was released in 1850, making it one of the first bottled red wines in Portugal, and is thought to be the first to plant Castelão.

This smooth velvety wine is a red blend of native Portuguese grape varieties; 34% Castelão, 33% Touriga Nacional and 33% Trincadeira, with aromas and flavours of cherries.

sugar. A powerful wine, and dense on the palate, its fruity acidity gives a lingering fresh, lively feel on the palate.

A pale ruby-red, with aromas of red fruits along with hints of plums, violets and lavender.

Medium bodied, it is smooth yet lean and lively on the palate, with flavours of fresh strawberries and blueberries.

Currant leaf (ever sniffed a blackcurrant bush?!) and herbal plum flavours are joined by a minty green tinge on the finish.

Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais, Burgundy, France, 2021, 13%abv., £11

Beaujolais wine often gets a bad rap, largely due to the cheap and cheerful stuff for early drinking that floods the market at the end of November each year. This one, made from the Gamay grape, by arguably the ‘king’ of Beaujolais, is an intense, brilliant cherry colour with purplish tints.

For an early drinking, relatively simple, wine it has some complexity on the nose, with red and black berry aromas. A good introduction to easy drinking red wines, this is a smooth wine, with silky tannins.

On the palate, it oozes fruit; think red and black cherries.

Chronic Cellars, Purple Paradise, Paso Robles, California, USA, 2019, 14.5%abv., £17.99

Jake and Josh Beckett grew up in Paso Robles, and, since 2004, thanks to their close contacts with the best grape growers, they have prided themselves on making their wines from the finest grapes. This Zinfandel-based blend really does taste ‘purple’.

Rich, ripe and bold. It is full of plum, black fruit, exotic vanilla and chocolate spice. Soft and approachable, it goes well with barbecue pulled pork or a hearty pasta dish.

Villa Trasqua, Chianti Classico DOCG, Tuscany, Italy, 2016, 14%abv., £15.99

In the glass, this wine offers a dense violet colour, with a little sideways stance, the red wine glass reveals an appealing purple hue around the edges. The bouquet has upfront aromas of blackcurrant, plum, black cherry and blueberry. Further exploration reveals secondary characteristics of cocoa bean, vanilla and dark chocolate. Dry and elegant, it is finely balanced.

Bottled with only 1 gram of residual sugar, it proves that great taste is not necessarily reliant upon the presence of

Sangre de Toro, Catalunya, Spain, 2019, 13.5%abv., £8.63

The original and classic Spanish red, in production since the 1950s, this is a Grenache dominant blend, paired with Carignan.

Deep in colour, it has a plummy jam note on the nose, with a touch of leather. Full of dark, ripe, sweet fruits on the palate, its smooth tannins and soft acidity make it very accessible.

Château Ferrière, Margaux, Bordeaux, France, 2018, 14.5%abv., £29.83

This estate, named a Third Growth estate in the 1855 classification of the Médoc and Graves, has 44 acres under vine, mostly within the village of Margaux itself, making it one of the smallest of the classed growths. The estate was founded and named for Gabriel Ferrière, a member of the court of King Louis XV and wine broker in Bordeaux during the 18th Century. Here they make Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant red blends, with the addition of some Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The aromatic nose is intense, revealing notes of bright blackberry, raspberry along with crushed red berries, plum, iris, lily and a spicy pepperiness.

The well-balanced palate is fruity, yet with hints of chocolate and toasted hazelnut. It has good length, and firm tannins. A wine crying out for attention.

Jenna Evans WE'RE CONTINUING our tour of our amazing bodies and this month should be the last time we look inside our heads. So open wide and say 'ah' as we take a look inside the mouth.

This area of the body is really complex and interesting. When I say think of the mouth where does your brain go first? Teeth?

Speech? Eating? Breathing? The mouth plays a role in all of these things.

I think we are all familiar (probably unhappily so for some of us!) with our teeth. We get two sets of gnashers, 20 as children and 32 as an adult (hands up who had problems with their wisdom teeth?) Teeth are living tissues, rich in nerve and blood supply.

Bathed in our saliva, which should be slightly alkaline and mineral rich. This is why it's important not only to brush our teeth (and tongue) regularly but also keep the mouth tissues, clear from sticky, sweet and acidic residue.

On the note of brushing I'd stay well away from fluoride, we just have too much evidence now of the dangers and I regularly get dentists referring clients to the shop for fluoride free toothpastes.

Speaking of things to avoid, top of the list has to be mercury.

There are so many mouths full of this dangerous metal. After many years of campaigning and exposing the risks within the dental industry, it is now accepted to be a hazardous material and there are many dentists who have dedicated their careers to mercury free dentistry.

improved greatly from the safe removal of mercury from their mouths – this has to be done by a skilled mercury free dentist though!

One of the most common oral problems is gingivitis (inflammation of the gums).

Periodontitis is a deeper inflammation of these tissues and those that surround and support the teeth. With age, these issues contribute to more tooth loss than cavities. So what can be done to help these common problems?

I often recommend a good bone formula supplement for people with chronic dental issues.

The tissue salt Combination R is a firm favourite. It's sometimes sold as ‘for teething’ but I have seen it really help with abscesses, tooth pain, infection and inflammation. If this is a recurring theme for you, I'd keep a bottle to hand ready to start using at the first twinge.

Echinacea tincture may be helpful, when applied neat and directly to infected areas. Clove oil is another well used pain reliever and disinfectant.

There are a range of products called Periobrite and I have had some good feedback on the mouthwash for dental flare ups.

For the gums, nutrients such as Vitamin C, Co-Enzyme Q10 and bioflavanoids such as those found in pine bark may all be helpful.

Don't overlook probiotics. For regular mouth infections be they dental or things like oral thrush,

consuming ‘live’ drinks such as kombucha and kefir may be helpful or even using a liquid probiotic as a supplement and making sure you give it a good swish around the whole mouth.

Oil pulling is another method of keeping our mouths in tip top condition that has grown massively in popularity over the last few years. It basically involves taking a big spoonful of oil (sesame and coconut are popular choices) and swishing it around your mouth for anywhere from 1 minute to 20 minutes or so and then spitting it out.

Proponents claim it can work miracles for all manner of dental problems.

Now I don't know anyone who has personally experienced one of those miracles but I do know a few fans of it for general oral hygiene and also it seems to really shift any gunk from up in the sinuses – I actually probably recommend it more for sinus congestion than teeth these days!

A note of caution if you try itstart small.

Use say 5-10ml of oil and only aim for a minute. Most people find they need to build up

Like a swarm of bees in the Adriatic! Astonishing what happened then.

LEA YPI’S BOOK is set in Durres, which, since 1961, when the Soviet Union abandoned their submarine base at Pasha Liman, just south of Vlora, has become the only significant port town in Albania.

Her book is largely biographical, and opens symbolically in December 1990, when she was eleven. The choice of her route home from school sets the scene, and ultimately the structure of the book.

She can either go left via the home of her best friend, who is looked after by her widowed father. Her friend lost her mother at the birth of her little sister, who for economic reasons, is in an orphanage in the north of the country.

Or, she can turn right, passing the state-owned (everything is state-owned) biscuit factory, where children often successfully hassled the workers for free biscuits.

But instead, she goes straight ahead from the school gate and encounters a rioting mob in conflict with dogs and police chanting “Freedom democracy, freedom democracy”.

In fright she runs to find refuge in the garden of the Palace of Culture not far from the port. She ultimately finds sanctuary hugging the thigh of Stalin's statue. When she recovers her composure and stands back, she realises the statue has been decapitated by the hooligans/insurgents.

But to this reader, the statue's leg has a hollow ring to it. In 2008 when visiting King Zog’s son, Leka, pretender to the Albanian throne, I saw Stalin’s statue well-preserved, but facing 22 THE VISITOR August 2022

into the corner between two nearby buildings like a naughty school boy. The statue was unharmed and had simply been moved to an inconspicuous and safe location near the end of the prince’s garden.

The cult of damaging statues had not started again by 1990, particularly so in Albania, where the people’s respect and fear of such actions would not have allowed it. Also Hoxah’s censorship would have protected them from the knowledge of what happened in Budapest on the 23rd October 1956 when the 8m tall Stalin statue was cut off at the knees and towed to Blaha Lujza Square for dismemberment. Tearing down statues only gained its recent popularity in 2003, when, in Fardoz Square in Baghdad, the then head of state made his symbolic drop under the protection of the bloody-handed Americans. More recently, the pathetic Sunday afternoon spectacle of a delegation of middle-class Bristolians dislodging Edward Colston from his perch 300 years after he had given up his Royal African Company interests, puts this activity into perspective.

This a well written book telling the simple story of a child, her parents and brother, and one remaining grandmother growing up in the last truly Stalinist state in Europe during the period when so-called Democracy turned up.

The author’s family were hampered in their statecontrolled lives as they have a “biography”. One of her father’s grandfathers was a former prime minister, the one preceding the Zog regime, well before Uncle

Enva’s takeover in 1946.

During my visits to Albania I have made many good friends, amongst them is Andi Nallbani, whose father Hasan also an artist, has produced a series of paintings which tell the same story as the book. Andi has selected some of these for this piece. They include a portrait of a land worker from the Hoxah period in the socialist realism genre.

Also various aspects of the flux of population out of Albania are portrayed: the human trafficking, particularly of women; the horrors of flight by sea; and “the car” period.

I have also included a photograph of the astonishing sight of the overloaded freighter The Vlora which was highjacked in Durres, with reportedly 20,000 onboard.

Between 1990 and now, the population of Shqipëria, aka Albania, has shrunk by more than 12% of the 1990 figure to just over 2.8 million. This Exodus is also generally portrayed in his paintings.

The “car period” is interesting too. Under Enva Hoxah the car

population grew to about 3000, all state-owned of course. That is one car for every 11,000 people - what a dream. In 1998 the Independent newspaper reported that Albania was home to more prestigious German cars per capita than Germany itself - 90% of them stolen!

Lea Ypi amusingly describes the jargon, which accompanied the new capitalist overcoat which most of the communist world donned post 1989.

“Privatisation” was in much demand by the populace. What they actually wanted was privacy and in particular an end to the post office workers’ practice of routinely opening post before it was delivered. Her father worked during that period as a port official and had to deal with “structural reforms” - a euphemism for mass sacking - at the behest of the World Bank and other interested agencies. But, he shrank from wholesale redundancies of poor Roma port workers.

I had a similar experience of understanding jargon in Tirana when I sought help from the British Embassy. The Ambassador, Fiona McIlwham, was out, so one of her assistants, probably recently graduated (LSE maybe) explained that I needed an “interlocutor”, significantly a word which Lea Ypi uses on page 201. None the wiser, I went back to my hotel and found an English dictionary which gave the following definition: “Centre man of Negro minstrel troupe such as on a Mississippi show boat”.

Even in 2009 such persons were few and far between in Albania.

In the text the interlocutor /centre man is Lea’s southern (Tosk) grandmother trying to facilitate an understanding between three French, all lady, NGO members and her northern (Gheg) daughter-in-law Doli (Lea’s mother) on the subject of women’s freedom. Doli later

admits to them that she was always able to facilitate her personal woman’s freedom with the aid of a kitchen knife.

Artist collaboration Gordon & Mary have opened their new art and design gallery on Market Place in Wincanton. The gallery exhibits original artworks, handmade lamps and specially selected period furniture as well as a range of homeware gifts, all designed by the artist.

Gordon & Mary met during their postgraduate studies at The Royal College of Art where they specialized in painting. Since then they have continued their practice in art, working together and individually. As solo artists they have gained many successes, amongst which include a mural commission for The Barbican Centre in London, finalist at The John Moore's Painting Prize in Manchester and exhibiting at The Venice Biennale. Homeowners utilising equity released from Later Life Mortgages to add thousands in value to their homes

LEADING MORTGAGE broker, Henry Dannell, has revealed how equity release can help homeowners add thousands to the value of their home.

Henry Dannell looked at the cost associated with a number of

key home renovations, what level of equity release would be required in order to cover this cost and the value added as a result.

More of us are opting to release equity from our properties in later life and the latest industry data shows that home or garden improvements are the second most common reason for

homeowners over 55 releasing equity from their home, now accounting for 36% of customers - up by 5% in the last year.

But while equity release can help cover the cost of these home improvements, the final results are also likely to add more value to your home.

But what’s the most worthwhile?

Loft conversion

A loft conversion is thought to add the most value bringing a 15% boost to a property’s price tag. Based on the current average UK house price of £281,161 that’s an additional £42,174.

A loft conversion will set you back £34,500 on average, requiring equity release to the tune of 12.3%.

However, while a loft conversion may add the most

value, it’s not the most profitable once the cost of the work is accounted for. In fact, it will add just £7,674 once the initial £34,500 cost of the work is covered.

Additional bedroom

Adding an additional bedroom requires the second largest level of equity release at 9.8%, adding over £6,000 in value once the cost of the work is accounted for.

Garage conversion

The most cost-effective equity release-powered home improvement? A garage conversion.

Requiring just 5.2% in equity release, the average cost of carrying out a garage conversion comes in at £14,500. However, the 10% added in value equates to £28,116, an overall profit of £13,616.

Utility room

A utility room is also a strong addition, requiring just 2.3% in equity release but adding value to the tune of £7,558 once costs are covered.

A kitchen revamp, a conservatory, a summer house, landscaping the garden, a full fresh lick of paint, a new bathroom or renovating an existing spare bedroom, are also worthwhile equity release endeavours when it comes to

adding value through home improvements.

What won’t add value

There’s just one addition that’s unlikely to improve your house price pedigree. With equity release often utilised by those in

later life, a stairlift can be a common addition.

However, while fairly costeffective to implement, requiring just 1.2% of equity release, it can be a deterrent to buyers and could even cause them to offer below the asking price to cover the cost of removing it.

Director of Henry Dannell, Geoff Garrett, commented: “Home improvements are one of the most common reasons that homeowners will opt to release equity from their homes. In doing so, it enables them to improve and expand on their existing property to prevent the need to

move and to accommodate their growing immediate family.

Funding these improvements by releasing equity also allows them to carry out the required work without the need to save, or dip into their pension pot. Of course, the additional upside is that these improvements are likely to add value to their home, even after the cost of the work is covered.

So not only is equity release a financially sensible approach, it can also be a smart investment for the future.”

BEER & SKITTLES P. A. BAXTER IT'S NEVER A good idea to make bold statements in print. Part of my first sentence last month was that ‘I'm still waiting for the summer to begin’. Now, as I sit here banging out my August column we're having some of the hottest temperatures ever recorded in this fair country of ours. D'oh!

My optimistic statement regarding the recovery of the hospitality industry may well have been a little mis-placed. As much as I enjoy going to pubs, with just family and friends alone

we can't help turn their fortunes around. We need all of us to muck in! It seems that only about one third are making a profit. A landlord and I were discussing this in detail and he said – and I quote ‘Any other business that has the turnover that we have and ends up with what we get would've packed it in a long time ago’. All issues that are affecting them are those same issues that are affecting the rest of us multiplied many times over. Then add staff challenges, that is, the lack thereof, plus transport of goods to sites etc. The situation is that we now have the fewest pubs in the history of our great nation. By June this year it numbered 39,970 - and that is over 7,000 down on 2012. In 2021 we lost more than one per day and by the middle of 2022 we had lost a further 200. Does this mean that the remaining pubs mop up those customers that no longer have their own local? Well sadly no, it doesn't necessarily work like that. Whole areas become pub deserts and if it means getting to the ‘new local’ by car, drink-drive laws may well put people off for good, and a few cheap tins from the supermarket become Hobson's choice.

As we have explored before in this column, pubs that are owned

by the community can be those which are doing well. There are many reasons for this, not least of course that there may be a much smaller wage bill as many are volunteer-led. There is also a strong sense of community which leads to a strong loyalty as a goodly number of customers are likely to be share-holders. One such venue I have been following with interest is the ‘White Lion’ at Broadwindsor, a village of just over 1,300 souls, right on the southern edge of the area that this fine magazine covers. The local community is clearly a strong one, having founded its cricket club way back in the 20th Century; in fact next year it will be celebrating its 100th Anniversary. Reports on the pub are always interesting (they have a Facebook site) and I hope they too, one day, will be celebrating their 100th birthday ... sadly I won't be attending.

Having often seen the advert for ‘The Orchard Inn’ in this magazine, I felt that a visit was overdue. As with so many licenced premises, there have been some extensive building alterations over the years and those carried out here are very positive. We chose to eat in the conservatory, bar tender for the night Darren being very accommodating for a not-so-able member of our party, and the chef (and owner) Matthew extremely helpful as that same member has food intolerances. Matthew has a track-record that is second to none and clearly has a passion for cooking. Butcombe beer was our choice, which earned them a good report to the CAMRA ‘WhatPub’ page. The pub's website implies 'traditional pub fare' with some pictures of what yours truly would consider to be a little pretentious. However, one need not be concerned as our food was beautifully cooked and presented.

Belly pork, chicken salad and a curry went to the others, whilst mine was a steak and ale pie actually the best I've ever had –

and that's something I do not say lightly. The whole evening was a success, and I congratulate Matthew and his charming and pleasant staff on running a real tight ship. It doesn't happen by magic but by sheer hard work and dedication! ‘We'll be back’ as the saying goes.

The great old traditional Kent based game of Bat and Trap continues to stimulate interest within the circle of our contemporaries. I found it amusing that initially it was treated in a perfunctory way by some until we were seen playing it and the sceptics joined in the fun, and all of a sudden it is elevated from what they believed was a kiddies game to something on par with cricket! I may have exaggerated slightly there for the sake of clarity, but the best way to see why interest is so strong is to have a go. Incidentally, the origins of the game goes back to the 15th Century and is believed that it actually does share its roots with cricket, and some fascinating old pictures exist of early activity. Whilst it might not be possible for you to participate right now, dear reader, please do take a look at YouTube at videos of the action, particularly the one with Charlie Ross and Steph Connell on the BBC Antiques Road Trip. Historian of the game Keith ‘Jake’ Janes gives them the background to the game and what happened after the First World War, when those mentally and physically injured were able to participate in a game where one can score runs – without actually running! Those returning from that ghastly business found themselves in the Garden of England for recovery and convalescence; hence Kent became the stronghold for the game. The result is that by the early 1920's the rules were codified, leagues were formed, and this year the Canterbury League celebrates its century.

blackcurrant jelly greedily enjoyed in this household, and I was forced to photograph it while the ultimate hedge trimmers in our adjoining orchard - 4 large black and white pregnant ladies - obliged me to photograph them too. the butterflies are busy at it! As if it isn’t bad enough snooping around looking for lily beetles and fighting off the carrot fly, this is just another enemy to face.

However, with mesh tunnels well pegged down, they not only keep Luca from padding across small plants, but break the wind from sweeping through a line of seedlings, help to retain some moisture in the soil and keep off the intensity of the sun's rays.

But where Luca is really useful is out walking particularly on a hot day. Being a Romanian city dog, he really cherishes town walks with their excellent lamp posts, park trees, rubbish bins awaiting collection and heaven of heavens - litter bins! While he poodles along at ground level, looking for old chicken bones, stale sandwiches and snacks of that ilk, it gives me a great opportunity to study other people’s gardens by peering over their fences and through their gates as we stroll along. It’s fascinating to see what people grow and how they do it particularly in terms of supports and frameworks and the choice of plants that flourish well in local soils. So unlike the many splendid gardens open to the public at this time of year, none of which welcome dogs (understandably) so we take our peeping where we can.

It’s also a wonderful opportunity to study the trees, their profiles, the number of insects they seem to attract and the depth and degree of shade they provide. With so many ashes dying back, huge gaps are and will be left but the plus side is that other saplings and shrubs will grow fast to fill the voids.

Not much consolation, though, given just how many ash trees there are in our landscape which don’t manifest disease till they start to offer up staring branches

This is where I bang my drum about hedgerows! They will fill the gaps with enormous speed given the chance and make up for some of the habitat loss.

July/August is really the time to get cracking on the wisteria.

It really is a bit of a bane, however, largely due, as must be the case for so many people, to its inaccessibility. Scaffolding would be the most appropriate approach for ours which has become very bushy indeed but can only be reached on a ladder or three, perhaps all in a row? It will have to be done somehow as it flowered really well this year

and will need to have the growth taken out of it in order to produce blooms next year. Catching up with gardening articles has provided a reminder that any of the climbers/ramblers planted in your garden will always demand pruning attention that can be difficult; if you inherit them, then you are kippered if you choose to keep them! They support themselves by suckers and twiners and will always grow towards the light so if planting new ones, make sure you plant them away from the light so that they grow in the right direction, whichever way that may be for your design.

Water is always a problem in August and as I write this during the hottest heat wave so far this year, warnings have been issued to use common sense and use water sparingly. This is always tricky when you see your veggies and pot plants wilting under the intense heat and it surprises me to read that people seem to need advice about when to maximize on the watering effect but it’s logical that last thing at night or very early in the morning is the best time if you wish to revive plants. Keep an eye on water barrels too - if you need to fill up your bird baths or ponds, rainwater is preferable whereas

a thirsty plant will be fairly happy to accept stuff from a hose.

For those in Devon and Cornwall, advice has been to save water for tourism which has probably gone down like a hot brick although tourism is the biggest source of income at this time of year. A double edged sword! Those of us who live in Dorset and Somerset are perhaps not under quite the same pressure.

Perhaps August is a good month to enjoy some of the trivialities of garden life but keep up the night time watering and walk your dog at 6.00am - such a lovely time of day for those who cannot take off their fur coats!

The ‘Electress’ ... a Mountfield temptress!

The new trend of cordless mowers and gardening tools is definitely something to shout about, but more and more Mountfield customers are also enjoying electric mowing machines. MOTORING VINTAGE Motorcycling with Rod Hann

I START THIS month with a clarification as too what is regarded as an old bike, my club (the VMCC) accepts all machines over 25 years old. Most old bike club's use a similar criteria. Even many members in our club do not recognise that machines dating from 1997 can be ridden in our events. The image of a ‘Vintage’ or ‘Classic’ club to most people is that of an elderly gent wobbling around very slowly on a flat tank machine made in a British factory decades ago.

That image could not be further from the truth in the 21st century. Now many members are mounted on machines from the 1970's and 1980's and perhaps in excess of 50% of any entry will be made up of bikes from all parts of the world. When we speak to fellow bike enthusiasts they cannot believe that the old bike they have in the shed is in fact eligible to be used in our events.

So there you have it - that old bike in the shed could well be recommissioned and put to further use.

Events during August are as prolific as always. Somerset Section start with their club night at Cossington on the 4th. On the 7th will be the Sign Post Rally from Creech St Michael and this is followed on the 18th by an Evening Meet at Catcott. The Codgers and Dodgers Run from Watchfield takes place on the 21st and in addition they have a weekly Morning Meet on Thursday mornings at the Avalon Centre. The Wessex Veteran and Vintage Section have an event

called the Lunch in the Woodshed Run on the 7th and this starts from Silton Village Hall.

Their club meeting on the following day will take the form of an auction of motorcycling related items and this will be at the same location.

The Dorset Section have a run on the 6th called the P u r b e c k Perambulation and this starts at Blandford. Next will be a club night Autojumble and Social at Pulham on the 10th.

The Border Run will take place on the 14th from a location yet to be confirmed. On the 17th will be another Mid Week Run this time starting at Henstridge. On the 21st is a Tiddler Run which is organised specially for machines with small engines.

Lastly on the 28th will be the August Run from Stalbridge.

Contrary to my first paragraph the picture this month shows two members preparing for the off after a pleasant coffee stop. The picture was taken at a recent Wessex Section event. This Section only organises events for pre 1931 machines so every bike needs to be at least 92 years old.

and the riders have a contented smile on their faces. An enjoyable day was had by all.

It seems these days that owners of machines they wish to sell are seldom advertised in the motorcycling press or in club journals, although I have had two successes this year using this method. Most bikes seem to end up on web sites or going to auction. Both of the later options seem to work well and all options have their advantages and disadvantages. With most methods at least the owner retains much of the control in the selling process, and I am aware that sellers in auctions retain the right to impose reserve figures.

The auction option is becoming ever more popular these days.

Japanese machines seem to be commanding very strong prices and favoured British machines also selling very well but the more common makes and models less well. A surprise was that small capacity machines, especially the small mopeds from the continent, are making very good money.

So when contemplating making another purchase there are many options available and always do your homework first to ensure that the new purchase is exactly what you want and need. And to those people who might have an old moped or small bike stuffed in the shed, and thought to be valueless, well now might be a very good time to pass it on. Remember when ... 30 years ago from A forty grand house

TOPOGRAPHY HAS limited the expansion of Bruton, with the main housing developments in the latter half of the last century being on the north-eastern side of town, off the A359 road to Frome. Gradually new houses crept up the hill, creating Burrowfield, Brue Avenue and Eastfield, and by 1992 they had reached Priory Mead. A feature in the August Visitor announced the opening of a show home on this latest development and an invitation to home-buyers to see the ‘good selection of homes to satisfy all tastes and pockets, with tremendous savings’. These included building society fees paid up to £120 and solicitors fees up to £300, and ‘on certain plots your home will be fitted free throughout with carpets from a standard selection available’.

Prices started from £39,950 for a two-bedroom semi.

Cary hits the silver screen

Not once but twice in the August Visitor the editor alerted readers to a television programme to be shown on 11th August 1992 at 7.45pm on BBC2. Entitled ‘Matters of Life and Death’ it was part of a new documentary series called ‘Shaking the Heavens’, and the reason for the magazine’s interest was its Castle Cary connection. The programme was a 40-minute look at the life and poetry of John Brookes who lived on Florida Street and who from 1984 had contributed a monthly poem to the Visitor – that’s more than 200 poems. Much of the documentary was filmed in Cary in the summer of 1991 and the local views provided a backdrop for the recitation of some of the poems: panoramas of the town from Lodge Hill, the shops on the Market Place and Fore Street, the crowded bar inside The 40 THE VISITOR August 2022

George and much more. It all provided good publicity for the town three decades ago.

Bakers’ anniversary

1992 saw the 80th anniversary of car dealers Bakers of Gillingham and the August Visitor carried a brief history.

‘Percy Osmond Baker opened for business 80 years ago in 1912, from his premises and home on Station Road. He carried persons and goods around the local area, and to and from the station, with his horse (Toby) and trap. Eight years later in 1920 he had a selection of vehicles including two Model T Fords.’ After describing how the business had expanded in the inter-war years, moved to a new site further up Station Road in the early 1950s, and started selling new cars in earnest, the article recorded that the company was now headed by P O Baker’s grandson, Nick Baker, and that ‘Bakers are justly proud of the strong family tradition, their 80 years of trading within the local community, and the benefits to their customers of personal service from the family and their long-serving staff’.

Puffy’s seat

On 4th July 1992 a seat in Wincanton was dedicated to the memory of the late Cecil “Puffy” Bowden who died in 1991. The seat near the library on Carrington Way was provided by Mr Bowden’s family, and a writer in the August Visitor thought ‘it would be nice, now, for the Town Council to do something similar in recognition of his lifetime’s good works in the town and his unsung charitable deeds’.

He suggested that a very minimum would be ‘an

engraved plaque for all to see, perhaps on the wall of the museum which was close to his heart’. Nowadays Puffy Bowden is probably best remembered as author of ‘Wincanton: Pleasant Town on the Cale’, published in 1985, which is full of information, archive photographs and memorabilia.

A smack back at the goody goodies

It’s sometimes hard to decide whether an item in the Visitor represents the writer’s real views or is intended to generate controversy. I suspect this one in the August 1992 issue contains elements of both, although it certainly reflects views I often

archives heard expressed in the pub 30 years ago. ‘In my day if you misbehaved you were punished by either a smack on the hand or the cane on the backside.

Nowadays, thanks to the soft minority, children at school are not given discipline in the same way, and if this naive bunch of goody goodies have their way, parents will soon be told that they cannot even discipline their own children with a smack. All this because they say we’re a civilised society.’ The writer added that ‘it is my considered opinion that we owe the state of the world today to the fact that young people have been brought up to think that they can do as they like and suffer no punishment’.
