ave you ever wondered what life would be like coping with a disability, especially one so severe that it restricts your movement, your ability to take a trip out, to a bar or to restaurant or even to a medical centre or hospital so that you can receive essential treatment.

There are far more people in the area who continually strug-

gle with such disabilities than you might imagine, many of whom don’t drive or don’t have access to any form of transport.

But at long last, certainly here on the Costa Blanca, there is at least one local charity that is doing something about it.

HELP at HOME Costa Blanca, a charitable organisation with their headquarters in Playa Flamenca, has identified the need for a dedicated vehicle that can be used within the local community to provide that vital service.

HELP at HOME Costa Blanca Continued from Page 1 Executive member Eileen Randall said “We are badly in need of such a vehicle, one that is fitted with all the necessary ramps and mobility equipment, driven by a suitably trained team of individuals, a vehicle that can provide such an important service to local people who suffer from such disabilities,” “Those members of society with mental and physical disabilities deserve to enjoy the same things as everyone else - this is precisely why we are doing this.

It’s all about social inclusion and attempting to eradicate a sense of isolation that many people with these infirmities regularly experience.”

Eileen said that the charity need in the region of 35,000 euro to ensure that their dream is turned into reality. “We have raised approximately 19,000 euro already so we are just over halfway to our target, and by ensuring that the project is firmly in the public eye we hope that the generosity of the public will

take us the rest of the way by the end of the financial year.”

The Emerald Isle Weekly Market, which is held at the La Florida venue every Tuesday (11am-3.30pm), is currently the main source of fundraising for the vehicle, but with other activities on the horizon, especially a Grand Event to be held in Villamartin Plaza in September, Eileen is extremely hopeful.

“There are activities being added to our calendar all the time. We have a fundraiser at Flamenca Beach, along with the Royal British Legion, on 28 May, the Oasis Bar in Benijofar has just announced a weekly quiz in our support, and we hope to announce even more events during the coming summer months, so with both fingers and legs crossed, I am hopeful that the charity will be able to meet it’s deadline and make this vitally important purchase toward the end of the year.”

We have been talking to potential suppliers and we now have the make and model of vehicle in mind, although our final choice will, of course, be made

when our project committee has completed It’s research and concluded all it’s costings.

Without access to suitable transportation, people with disabilities will never be able to be part of society’s environment and they will continue to be alienated from the mainstream, thus causing a myriad of other problems. This is why the procurement of such a vehicle is so vital to people in our local community.

Busy April for Maria and gang Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers Peacocks Petanca Club raised and generously donated 450€ to Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers. The money was presented to some of our Pink Ladies and Panthers by the secretary Irene Tolson and treasurer June Sutton.

April 15th saw the seventh Bike for Life, hosted

by Bar UK, in Torre de la Horadada. The family 10km bike ride, was supported and sponsored by Family Bike Hire.Com, image plus and Fishing Costa Blanca.

The 10km course is mainly on a flat route which makes it great fun for young, old, novice or experienced, you don't even need a bike, they organisers can provide you with one. The money raised on the day through sponsorship, bike hire and donations was divided between Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers, and Help Vega Baja, our charity receiving a fantastic 600€.

Another 163€ was collected on the day by our volunteers making it an impressive 763€. A huge thank you to all involved and a special thanks for choosing our charity.

Underworld Boxing Club Resurfaces

Sam last week with a few of his members t was over seven years ago when a VOLUNTEER-run boxing and fitness club was first established in La Zenia where it functioned at a great deal of personal cost by founder and local businessman Lloyd (Sam) Sambor. The club provide essential sporting facilities to the youth of the Orihuela Costa by whom it was very well received.

Unfortunately, the economic climate eventually forced its closure.

But now it is back with a vengeance. The club, appropriately named Underworld Amateur Boxing Club, is situated in premises, underneath MAPFRE Insurance. It is run by a few dedicated volunteers who give their time to help the local community. Sam told the Leader “It is a great community asset, one that gives a lot of its members some purpose in life, and one that we will work hard to keep going in the future.

We don’t want to see it close again.”

The gym is located just off the N332, behind the Veterinarian practice, in the commercial centre, directly underneath the Mapfre offices. The club is open on Monday and Wednesday evening from 5-8pm but for those early birds who prefer to get in their training session prior to embarking on their daily activities, the centre opens on Tuesday and Thursday morning from 6.30 to 8am.

“In the time that the club has been at its present location in La Zenia sponsorship has been very hard to come by and a great majority of the funding has come from my own pocket. Now, however, I am asking the people who use the facility to make a small contribution themselves.”

The gym is aimed at boys, girls and adults from 10 years of age. It costs just 5 euro a session for adults and 3 euros for youths and children to use the equipment for a 90 minute session, which includes personal fitness coaching from Sam, who can be contacted on 627 177 511 or 966 844 453. Sam is also available for ‘one to one’ Personal training.

Sam is a fully qualified ABA coach with many years of experience both as a competitor and as a coach at all levels of the sport. He said "Amateur boxing is one of the most rewarding, challenging and safest sports available to young people today. It isn't about knocking people out, it's about using your brain and your skills to outscore them. We

Dublin bound Ryanair flight ‘Just the ticket’ abandoned because of loose wheel for GASP

By Paddy Clancy A Ryanair jet with passengers aboard abandoned take-off because a wheel worked loose.

More than 180 passengers were taken off the jet at San Javier Airport, Murcia, minutes before take-off last Monday night.

They included travellers on a bank holiday weekend trip to Spain.

The Dublin-bound flight was cancelled and passengers were placed in hotels overnight for another flight home next day.

A woman whose husband was on the plane said: “The back seat passengers were the first to be aware something was wrong.

“I am not sure if they saw the wheel come loose but when they were disembarking that’s what the crew told them happened.”

A west of Ireland man who works in Spain had dropped people at the airport for the flight home.

He said: “They told me a wheel came off. Nobody seemed very excited.

“Nobody was injured and they were put up overnight and they flew home next day.”

Ryanair refused to give details except to say a “technical” issued caused the flight cancellation.

A spokesman said: “The crew of this flight from Murcia to Dublin last Monday (1 May) returned the aircraft to stand due to a technical issue ahead of take-off..

“Customers disembarked, were provided with overnight hotel accommodation and departed to Dublin on a replacement aircraft the following morning.

“Ryanair sincerely apologised to all customers affected by this

delay.”

When the question was put a second time direct to Ryanair: “Did the plane lost a wheel” the spokesman replied: “We don’t comment or engage in rumour or speculation.”

It’s not the first time a Ryanair jet operated without all wheels.

Two years ago passengers on board a flight into Leeds Bradford Airport were given a rough ride when their plane landed on one wheel and bounced onto the runway.

Footage shot by witnesses showed the plane approach the runway wobbling from side to side as it battled strong crosswinds at England’s highest airport.

The pilot managed to get the aircraft back onto two wheels and on the straight and narrow to ensure a safe landing.

His wife found out and attempted to murder him by pushing him down the cellar steps, but, did he die?

No, he didn't because here he is again living on the Costa Blanca together with his old housekeeper, Cummings, keeping a low profile while his wife is drinking herself silly on the Algarve. Suddenly, his peace is shattered when his old friend and co-conspirator, Gerald, turns up. Gerald tells Rodney that he has won the lottery, but dare not claim as this would draw attention to himself. At this point enter two girls who are looking for somewhere to live for a few weeks, and they offer to cash in the ticket.

But, are they really as nice as they seem, and what of Cummings, is she as innocent as she appears?

Generalitat Valenciana to ban soft drinks in hospital Vending machines

The Generalitat Valenciana has said that it will not introduce a new tax on sweetened beverages, like that applied in Catalonia last week but it intends to ban the consumption of these drinks with high sugar content.

recent public study carried out in 2014 indicates that 30.4% of children 0 to 16 years of age are overweight while in Valencia 11.8% suffer from childhood obesity. Those most affected are children between the ages of eight and twelve.

A decree that is currently being processed by the Ministry of Health will prohibit the sale of soft drinks and confectionery in vending machines that are situated in all public buildings. That will include schools, hospitals and many other such establishments which are managed by the government and local councils.

The Murcia Community already applies such rules in hospitals and they now state that they too will move a stage further by removing sugary drinks and confectionery from all vending machines to be found in health centres.

The draft of the law, which was discussed last Tuesday by the Valencian Department of Health runs by Carmen MontĂłn, states that "in educational, medical and social services centres, vending machines containing food and beverages may carry only bottled water, skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, low-fat yogurts with no added sugar, whole grain bread, fresh fruit, non-fried and low-salt nuts, added sugar-free soft drinks and fruit juices'.

SABS (Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers) recently held their Annual Convention in Benalmadena, Costa del Sol, where choruses and quartets from all over Spain competed in what was a very close contest. On that Saturday morning all competitors were up early with full stage make up and stage outfits on before 9am. Pilarmonics had a last minute pep talk and warm up before crossing the contest stage and performing to the judges and audience. As the ‘new kids on the block’ they had nothing to lose and gave their performance everything they had.

Many rigorous months of rehearsal and training paid off when Pilarmonics, based in Pilar de la Horadada, were awarded the GOLD medal as 1st placed chorus in the Spanish National Competition.

Pilarmonics founder, Phil Molloy who lives in Pilar de la Horadada, said “We are a great team with a terrific musical director and I am so very proud of all of our ladies who worked in harmony and friendship and together achieved the joint highest score awarded to date in the Spanish National Contest. My aim was for Pilarmonics to compete at SABS Convention and I’m absolutely delighted to have won gold in our very first contest.”

In addition, they were also awarded trophies for receiving the Highest score in both Music & Singing. Musical Director, Dawn Ritch who lives in Cabo Roig, said “This is beyond our wildest

Mike Law Charity Bridge Tournament

On Friday 28th April the 4th annual Mike Law Charity Bridge Tournament was held at The Asturias restaurant in Punta Prima. This is a tournament organised by the Bridge section of the Torrevieja U3A group and was attended by 41 members of the group and succeeded in raising the sum of 630€ which is to be donated to the Reach Out charity in Torrevieja.

Mike Law was one of the founder members of the Torrevieja U3A and was also involved in the creation of the Bridge section. Mike was passionate about his bridge and unfortunately died 3 years ago last December. The Bridge section has held a Charity Tournament ever since with the proceeds going to Mikes favourite charity Reach Out.

Auction commences at 3.00p.m.

Cost per item is 4 euros.

Cost for 3 items or more is 10 euros.

Items sold over 20 euros there is 20% commission payable.

Heliport for Costa Emergency Centre The new completion date is June 2019

rior to submitting a final design for the Orihuela Costa Emergency Centre a team of architects from the Orihuela council has been busy remodelling some areas of the building in light of changes to the requirements of the likely staff.

There will now be a rest and recreation area for those individuals who are working a 24 hour shift as well as a dining room with basic kitchen facilities. The Councillor for Emergencies in Orihuela, VĂ­ctor Valverde, also announced plans to install a fire station and a heliport which would be used by either the Guardia, the fire or the Medical services.

Police seek owner of neglected dog Torrevieja police are urgently seeking the owner of a badly neglected dog after it arrived at the Municipal Animal Shelter on Thursday, prior to its immediate transfer to a veterinary clinic

The councillor, Carmen Morate, said that the animal was in such a terrible state that there were grave fears for its survival and despite the efforts of the animal hospital their fears were confirmed on Friday afternoon when the animal had to be put down to save it from further pain and suffering.

Police are now asking the public for their help in locating the owner of the dog as they intend to bring criminal proceedings against the individual who has committed a criminal offense due to the lack of care which he failed to provide to the deceased animal.

On arriving at the shelter the dog was less than two kilos in weight, with protracted evidence of physical wasting causing loss of weight and muscle mass due to disease. It had an infection in both eyes, it was infested with fleas, and had practically no hair

Construction originally got underway in 2010 but it was abruptly halted only a year later with the bankruptcy of the builder. But now it seems that a budget of 553,696 euros has finally been agreed by the Generalitat which could see the tender documentation distributed toward the end of the summer with a completion date scheduled for 2019.

The cost of preparing the new project is around 20,000 euros which the City Council is already working on.

With the final plans due to be completed in July they will then be sent to tender with a lead time of about 8 months. It is planned that the building can then be completed June 2019, the deadline that has been set by the Consell.

‘Letters from the Atlantic’ He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

I

often hear from expats who have trouble integrating into their local communities. For some, life may simply revolve around a bar culture, because it is there that they will meet expats like themselves.

It took two of us to lift the instrument from his car and into our house. He admitted that he was delighted to be rid of it! Amazingly, my order took less than a week to travel from Germany, which also included a short spell in customs, which again is unusual over here.

Other expats often slip happily into fully taking part in local activities and social events for expats, with many also joining in with local community activities, particularly when confidence with their language skills develops.

A few weeks ago, I was drawn to a sound from a musical instrument that I have not heard for many years. I recognised the instrument immediately and followed the deep, rich, flowing melody to its source. It was a cello, and lovingly played by a young man in the main street of our small town. I had never seen the cellist before, but

Last week, my new cello arrived from Germany. It is a beautiful and amazing instrument that arrived in an enormous box. I had assumed that it would arrive by courier, and was amazed to find our postman struggling to deliver it in his car. The car seats were folded down, as there was hardly enough room for the postman, let alone the rest of his post.

The Cello Epiphany

Of course, there are expats who live in parts of rural Spain and the Canary Islands, where it is not quite so easy to take part in social activities, and particularly when it is necessary to travel at night, with events often beginning at 9.00 pm, and with very little or no public transport available. This is often where hobbies and interests become important if craving for expat television is to be avoided.

Over the subsequent weeks, I thought a lot about the cellist and my experience on that sunny morning in town. I found myself searching for and listening to cello music, and particularly performances by soloists. Eventually, I made up my mind to learn the cello. It was, after all, another stringed instrument, which I am used to.

Admittedly, I would not be tucking this instrument under my chin, but a new challenge is good for all of us, isn't it?

Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.

This was my experience of expat life in the Costa Blanca, where the range and variety of available activities, as well as the willingness of expats to take part always surprised me. Whoever said that the British are reserved?

So there we have it; a chance encounter with an unemployed cellist during a shopping trip to my local town has led to what appears to be a life changing experience. I am busily ploughing through the tutor book and enjoying every minute of it. I should also add that most municipalities in Spain offer instrumental music tuition, usually in groups, and at a reasonable cost. So, if you have ever felt the urge to learn the Spanish guitar, now maybe is the time. he was clearly a highly proficient musician. I sat on the wall nearby and listened as he skilfully made the cello ‘speak’ to anyone who would listen. I stayed for some time listening and remembering a time when I played the violin in the school orchestra as a teenager. I remembered that I too had wanted to play one of the school's two cellos, but as I was not particularly skilful, my request was denied and so I was destined to play second violin during my time at the school.

Last year, I resumed playing the violin once again after a gap of many years. As is the case with riding a bicycle, early learned skills are not easily forgotten, but it is just more painful with the passage of time!

Expats be warned. If anyone sends me an email complaining that they are bored with their new lives as expats, I shall now be recommending very firmly that they take up a musical instrument. It is both mentally and physically challenging and may lead to all sorts of social, as well as musical experiences. As for me, I may well consider taking up the Spanish lute (laúd español) next year.

EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON Euronics Darts Results - 4th May Finals Team Knock Out Cup: Junction Jackals v El Capitan Well we couldn’t separate these two leviathans last week when they finished joint 2nd place in the league but in the final match of the season, there could only be one winner of the Team KO competition.

Last season El Capitan won the title but this year, Phil de Lacy and his merry men of the Junction Jackals deservedly won the cup. The El Galan boys won the toss and had first throw but El Capitan’s Aroldas Klimonis’ first darts were a cool 140 and then team mate Jim Waddell closed the first triples on D4.

El Cap took the 2nd triples with Ed Klimonis checking out S16-D8.

With Jackals’ hackles raised the tasty triplet of Lee Maiden, Andy Rutter and Alex Nikolov (S9-S18-D18) pulled one back. Bolstered by his win, captain de Lacy played Alex first out in the pairs against Aroldas and David Rotella.

The El Cap lads scored 100 apiece but the Jackals scored 122 and 121 and de Lacy finished with a flurry- S10-S20-D20 evening the score line up nicely. Maiden and Rutter succumbed to Rotella and Bettel’s 100 and D12 out in the 2nd pairs.

In the last game before num-nums ‘super Nige’ scored 134- (perhaps because his sandals had parted friendship with his socks for the night)-and Junction landlord Andy Gildea sunk his first dart in for D20 to make the half time score 3 all.

After a tasty and slightly spicy portion of cottage pie, Aroldas could not do enough to stop Lee Maiden who scored a 140 and then a two dart finish on S17-D20. Andy Rutter was 300 ahead of opponent Mel Bettel in his singles but eventually he hit D5 with a sigh of relief.

The third singles also went the way of the Jackals when the mad Bulgarian chalked up 100, 125 and D20 against Daddy Klimonis.

So the jackals were now 6-3 up and only needing one more leg from the last 3.

Sockless Nige did his level best against captain Den Hall but the latter checked out on D16 to give El Cap a glimmer of hope. This glimmer soon faded when old adversaries de Lacy and Rotella met in the next game. Phil, equipped with his new darts, scored 92, 100

and took himself ahead of Rotella and could have left him high and dry had his first shot at the finish hit home. It didn’t, but further whittling got him down to D4 which he picked off to make it a 7-4 win for the Jackals.

In all their excitement, they forgot to thank Paul Birtwistle and the Tavern for hosting the event, so on their behalf, thank you very much and also a thank you Debbie Wright and Simone who chalked the first game and kept all the scores and finally for the support from other teams Massey’s, Hyenas and co who came to watch.

The Jubilant Jackals back at the Junction Finals Auxiliary Team Knock Out Cup: Ale House v Porter House Bees Well the Ale House got off to a flying start courtesy of Andre Wing, Karl Mallinson and Del Lister’s D5 check-out against Tim Goodacre, Handsome Harvey Lane and Gilly Kirby.

The tasty triplet of Havelock, Gray and Leaver (D20) saw off Graham Parker and Mr and Mrs Lane in the 2nd triples and then Havelock, Wing and Mallinson’s very impressive T20-S20-D16 (112) out-shot got them the 3rd.

Mallinson and Wing’s D4 got them 4 in a row by the end of the first pairs stinging the Bees into action. Gilly and John Lane’s S19-D4 opened the account for the Bees and then King Bee Parker got a 180 before checking out on S10-D16 for leg no. 2 with Michelle.

SAMM back on the Ocean Waves The St. George's Day racing was the first of the racing season for The Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM). The start of the season had been delayed by unforeseen circumstances and also to allow the Junior Laser 4.7 European Championships to take place at C.T.D. Los Alcazares where over 330 juniors sailors took part over 9 very windy days many suffering broken masts or lost sails.

By Sunday the wind had dropped, thank goodness, to a challenging but pleasant 17 knots and eight boats arrived at the start line. The two larger Sailfish were sent off 5 minutes before the dinghies, to avoid any clashes but were soon caught up by the first of the dinghies, the Hartley 12.2 helmed by Don Clarke, closely followed by Julian Singleton, a new member, on his Topaz Uno. The wind overpowered Norman Vener on his Laser Radial who paid a heavy price by losing his rudder to the depths of the Mar Menor. The support boat quickly took GPS Readings and hopefully will recover the rudder another day.

The race continued with some helms getting stuck in "irons" and losing valuable time but all but Norman completed the four lap race.

For the second race the course was shortened, by removing the third buoy to make a triangular course, as the wind appeared to be stiffening. The gusts didn't last long but enough to cause havoc going up to the first mark with the larger Sailfish boat with Leon, Janice and Derek suffering most.

So into the singles with a score line of 4 – 2 to the Ale House the Bees started to even things up with Tim (D1) and Graham (D1) taking the first two legs.

Ale House’s Leaver then took one back with an impressive S18D20-D18 (94) 3-darter only to have Bees’ Hirst square it up again (T13-D3).

Queen Bee Michelle added to the damage with her D8 out to take the Bees up to 6 legs, just needing the 7th for the win in the last of the singles.

Captain Mallinson wasn’t having any of that and his D15-D6 made it a tie at the end of the usual league format. So, as in qualifying before, the Bees needed to win the 13th Golden game of 6- players in the 13th leg of 1001.

A great effort from both teams in this decider but the victory went to the Bees when John Lane sealed the deal with S16-S16-D8. Big thanks to Terry Kirby who chalked a lot of the games and to the Hen’s Teeth for putting on a lovely spread and hosting the match.

It’s all over for this season now (TFFT) save for the Presentation Night next week. With 160 players and guests attending it should be one hell of a night, including the Blind Team KO comp, oodles of trophies to be awarded and raffle prizes to be won before dancing away into the early hours! The men's singles lost on the first round, men's singles lost in the quarter finals. The mixed trips lost in the final against Finca Guila the team was Brian Zelin, Sue Kemp and Danny King. The mixed rinks got through to the finals which was played on Monday 24th April. The rinks team consisted of Roy Mercer, Jan Gatward, Geraldine and Gordon Fisher. The opposition from San Louis was Steve Simmons, Keith Jones, Sabrina and Russell Marks. Monte Mar walked on water that day and kept San Louis off the score board until the tenth end. San Louis conceded the game after sixteen ends the score being 21 to Monte Mar – 11 to San Louis. A good eight days bowling and the weather was kind, some days a bit chilly but dry. Well done to all who took part, a special well done to Roy Mercer, Jan Gatward, Geraldine and Gordon Fisher on winning the Mixed Rinks.

Monday 24th April. Monte Mar entertained a visiting team from Chiltern Bowls Club. Six games of rinks were played on a warm and sunny day. Monte Mar did very well but results are not important, as everyone had a very enjoyable and friendly morning's bowling. After the game we all had a lovely meal together in the Rincon Restaurant.

The extra bonus for the visitors was that they won both raffle prizes.

Monday 1st May. Monte Mar Torro's v Quesada Lancaster's On a lovely May Day there was some very good bowling by both teams. The Lancaster's won on three rinks and the Toro's won on two rinks and drew on one.

Well done to the winning rinks of Ronnie Cairns, June Young and skip Dave Melville. Denise Ashberry, Val Hignett and skip Alan Ashberry. Also well done to our drawing team of Keith Simpson, Joe Ridley and skip Diane Ridley.

La Marina Bowls Club

By Barry Latham The Pilots flew away to the Emerald Isle to play the Vulcans and came back with another good win of 10-4. Four winning rinks plus the overall shots. Barry and Margaret Sadler and Mo Kidd in fine form 22-8 so were Sue Daniels, John Rae and Anne Stone 25-12.

Terry and Jean Perchard along with Lorita Rae 17-12 and with the same difference John Morgan, Tom Spencer and Gina Hindle 16-11.

La Marina and the VCL aren’t very compatible at the moment as we went to San Miguel and got rather harshly beaten again. This time 12-2. Our only winning rink came from Dave Taylor, John Rae, Carol Smith and Mo Taylor. Mo had a great game and rumour has it that Dave was so pleased that a trip to some dress shops is on the cards.

The Pilots had their second game on Friday where they played the Quesada Lancasters away and got bombed off the green losing 10-4 although the overall shots was only a measly six shots. Len Daniels, Steve Hindle and Dave O’Sullivan won 17-10 while our top winning trip was John Morgan, Tom Spencer and Gina Hindle.

Carp-R-Us Fishing match.

This week we fished the Spring Cup at the Embalse de Pedrera. The section we use is a peninsular and it is amazing how the conditions can vary on either side. Today, the pegs on the left-hand side had excellent conditions, warm with a light breeze and three of the top four weights came from this area. On the other side the anglers were fishing into a strong breeze with waves around a foot-high making presentation difficult. First in the match was newcomer Alan Davies with 11.50 kg of carp caught on the method feeder and pellet, a sixth different winner in the last six club matches. Second was Doug Hornblow (4.74 kg) using the same method, third was Tom Marshall with 4.28 kg using feeder and corn and fourth was Graham Ledley with 3.94 kg.

La Siesta Bowls Club

by Rod Edgerton Not such a good week for the Wasps in the South Alicante League,Spitfire Division, with two defeats.On Monday a 14 points to nil reverse at home to Vistabella Fairways by 124 shots to 81.Two rinks put up creditable performances with Beryl Styring with Mike and Florence Edwards losing by a single shot 14-15 whilst Irene Laverick,Ramsey Sinclair and Alex Morrice went down by 18-20.

On Friday the Wasps travelled to San Miguel Moors and faired slightly better picking up 4 points to their opponents 10.The overall shots being 94 to 112.The winning rinks for the Wasps were Beryl Styring with Mike and Florence Edwards winning by 21 shots to 10 whilst Pat Moore, Norman Adcroft and Irene Mangan gained a comfortable 25 shot to 13 win.

The Hornets in the South Alicante League,Harrier Division, continued their unbeaten winning run with a 10 points to 4 win at home to Horadada Hawks who themselves were high in the League.The overall shots which may prove vital at the end of the season were 110 to 94 in favour of the Hornets.The winning rinks for the Hornets came from Jean James,Alan Ralph and Johnnie Ryder by 27shots to 11,Hilary Clarke,Trish Reilly and Vic Mahomet by 19 shots to 15 and by the narrowest of margins 15 shots to 14 from Penny Porter,Sid Gallup and John Clarke and by 20 shots to 19 by Wendy Ralph with Barbara and Jack Cooper.

Photographers told to ‘snap out’ of taking risque photos at the races YOU'RE under starters orders - when it comes to dress code - at the races!

Fancy dress is completely out of the question at some racecourses at the upper end of racegoers 'posh' areas. Champagne Charlie's and prawn sandwich brigade.

And photographers will find themselves involved with a 'stewards enquiry' if they step out of line in future in their attempts to get that risque snap!

Racing attracts Hen Parties and Stag 'Do's - where you know that the drinks are going to be flowing - and anything can happen after a few 'tipples'!

At Haydock Park, where racing takes place this weekend (May 13) protocol for gentlemen in the County Enclosure, hospitality boxes and Kauto Star restaurant, is to wear a buttoned collared shirt and smart trousers.

Jeans are allowed - as long as they're not faded, distressed or ripped.

Fancy dress, sportswear - including training shoes - or swimwear are not permitted.

In the Premier Enclosure's Premier Suite, Harry's Bistro and Park Suite, jacket, tie and smart trousers - no jeans - is the protocol for gentlemen, and best day wear for ladies.

However, in the Grandstand, Paddock and Newton enclosures the dress code is more relaxed - with racegoers not required to adhere to ANY dress code. You can also don fancy dress - as long as it is not offensive to others!

At Ascot, where racing also takes place on Saturday May 13, fancy dress and replica sports shirts are not permitted - with a spokesperson saying: "Ascot Racecourse reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone deemed to be dressed inappropriately."

The 2017 Flat season is now well underway and at the King Edward VII enclosure Ladies are encouraged to wear hats. With gentlemens dress code being jacket, collared shirt and tie. No trainers. Some fashionistas will be disappointed!

This year however Ascot racecourse are allowing jumpsuits to be worn in the Royal Enclosure - as long as they are full-length.

Ascot's Queen Anne enclosure are more relaxed this year, with shorter length jumpsuits allowed. Ascot organisers made a significant changed in their strict dress code policies in 1971 - when the trouser suit was incorporated into the dress code.

At this month's Aintree Grand National meeting women attending Ladies' Day were encouraged to be aspirational when choosing their outfit, in the wake of over tanned and underdressed women - in

Ladies Day Aintree 2015. At this year's Ladies Day photographers were told they'd be ejected if intent of 'mocking' attendees. risqué dresses - in recent years.

A spoksperson at Aintree said: "We felt we had to refresh Ladies' Day this year with a style code - rather than a dress code.

"We are trying to move it forward - and make it a little bit more aspirational than it had become."

And with a £35,000 Range Rover and £8,000 worth of fashion vouchers on offer for the best-dressed at Aintree this year it was well worth the effort of getting all 'dolled-up'!

Sharp-eyed photographers have been keen to snap unflattering ladies - something the racing world are attempting to stamp out.

At Aintree this year it was announced that staff would monitor photographers - and eject anyone thought to be intent of 'mocking' attendees.

At Haydock Park a spokesperson said: "We do ask that racegoers don't arrive with no top on at all in the Grandstand, Paddock and Newton enclosures."

Talk about losing your shirt at the races!!!

Greenlands to host Línea Directa Nationals Opening ceremony

This year’s Línea Directa Championships will be open this coming Saturday at Greenlands Bowls Club and, if the weather is kind, culminate with the finals day at Quesada Bowls Club on 27th May. Once again, Línea Directa has kindly agreed to be the main sponsor, which has allowed the Organisers to offer a lower entry fee, which, in turn, has resulted in a 20% increase in entries.

Línea Directa are also providing a large food hamper worth 200 euro which will as part of a free draw at the end of the tournament.

These entries are mainly from the Alicante area, which is the largest Region, but there are also bowlers travelling up from Almeria, Malaga and across Tenerife.

The opening ceremony will be at Greenlands Bowls Club on Saturday the 13th May at 11.30 where they will play daily until the 21st, after which the competition will transfer to Quesada Bowls Club, culminating in the Finals on Sat. 27th.

Although he has a bye through to round one, If last year’s men’s champion Martin Foulcer of Vistabella is to retain his title he will have to overcome one of the region’s most consistent bowlers in Stuart Hemmings of San Miguel while, in the Ladies section, 2016 winner Ann Eagle won’t be relishing an opening round tie with Ann Marie Stevenson of the Emerald Isle, the recent winner of the Champions of Champions crown held on the gReenlands rink.

The early rounds at Greenlands Bowls Club get underway daily at 10 am with play going through until approx. 5pm every evening.

Everybody is welcomed to go along and spectateand once again entrance is absolutely free. If you are considering adopting the sport yourself this would be an ideal opportunity to go along and chat to bowlers who would be delighted to offer you advice and information.

By Simone de Lacy The annual Spanish National Federation of Darts tournament was held in Gandia again this year (27 April-1st May) and two teams of hopefuls (Men’s and Ladies) competed for the right to enter having played in the preliminary rankings games during the season to qualify for a place on the team.

They faced around 600 people from all over Spain in the competitions individual, pairs and team matches that stretched over 4 days. It was one hell of a weekend but well worth it!

Mayor Jose joins CD Montesinos celebrations

By ANDREW ATKINSON Los Montesinos celebrated the 2nd Regional Championship success of CD Montesinos in style - with Church and Ayuntamiento acknowledgements - as part of the Vega Baja town’s celebrations.

Hundreds of supporters applauded the team as they walked on to the pitch hand-in-hand with mascots in the final game of the season against Grupo Caliche, through a ‘guard of honour’ of young players and the sporting Grupo Caliche team, as the town band played to fireworks.

After Sunday’s 2nd Regional final game of the 2016-17 campaign against Grupo Caliche - in which nearly 700 supporters packed into The Municipal Stadium - celebrations continued, with free tapas and drinks for all, with presentations of all of the club's teams, including the Youth teams, taking place.

After the 7-1 win against Grupo Caliche the CD Montesinos squad, lead by coach Carlos Perez, were centre stage as they sang ‘Campeones’ – Champions - to the applauding crowd.

The players, management and staff then walked through the town to applause and cheers, to make a floral tribute at the town's Church, followed by a Town Hall balcony ‘tribute of honour’.

Club Deportivo Montesinos clinched the 2nd Regional Group 16 of the Valencian League, España, Championship, achieving promotion to the 1st Regional Division for the first time since 1975, under the

leadership of coach Carlos Perez and Presidente Felipe Paredes, underlined with a hard working Committee and The Full Monte Supporters Club.

The club played at the 1st Regional level in 1975, when Los Montesinos were administratively part of Almoradi. In 1976 the club moved to the Los Montesinos Municipal Stadium, where 110,000 euros has been spent this year in a refurbishment, that including a new stand.

“The town of Los Montesinos are very proud of the football club’s achievements. On behalf of everyone congratulations go to out to them,” Los Montesinos Mayor Jose Manuel Butron told The Leader.

by Walter D.Wintle which adequately describes inner strength and the will to win as follows: If you think that you are beaten, you are; If you think you dare not, you don’t.

If you’d like to win, but think you can’t It’s almost a cert you won’t.

For out in the world we find success begins with a fellow’s will; It’s all in the state of mind.

If you think you’re outclassed, you are; You’ve got to think high to rise.

You’ve got to be sure of yourself before you can ever win a prize.

Life’s battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man; But sooner or later the man who wins is the one who thinks he can.

Remember that it is good to win but not at all costs and this poem suggest that while it is good to be a winner you can remain a nice decent person also.

Why do you think that us brits do not really like the yanks?

It is because they like and want to be winners while we are happy to play the game but come a sporting runner up.

Nick Faldo never endeared himself to the British golfing public because he was too American in his methods and will to win.

There is no need to display arrogance on the golf course, which we associate with the yanks, but you can have an inner drive and desire to be the best golfer that you can be.

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD AS TORRY TUMBLE OUT OF THE LEAGUE T his really was Paterna CF .................... 2 the game that was going to CD Torrevieja ................ 0 shape Torrevieja’s future, certainly going a long way toward providing the outcome of where they would be playing their football next season.

As the Salineros sat lodged in the fourth relegation spot, 3 points behind rivals CD Buñol, with just two games to play, the only result they could possibly consider was a win, and with it the three points, as they travelled along the AP7 to Paterna, while at the same time hoping that Buñol would slip up in their quest for points at Villarreal CF C. A Torry victory would then drag Sunday’s opponents Paterna down into the mix leaving them just a single point ahead of Torry and the rather surprise rivals for that final relegation spot.

But going into the penultimate game of the season the ‘whats’ and the ‘ifs’ counted for absolutely nothing with the football still to be played and next season’s Tercera status still to be won.

Following Damian’s needless yellow card against Crevillente Molina and Dani Salazar were brought into the Torrevieja starting line-up for this most vital of games which somehow seemed to be lost on both sets of players during the opening quarter.

Neither team looked keen to make the running which had both sets of supporters wondering why they alone had made the effort.

It took fully 20 minutes before the game finally flickered into life when Paterna’s wide man Alcaide shot straight at Jose Carlos in the Torry goal with the goal completely at his mercy. Let off number

two came for the visitors moments later, this time a fierce drive from Tobias that shaved the Torry post.

The Torry bench were screaming instructions at their players as all the pressure was coming from the home side. Indeed it took a brilliant point blank save from Jose Carlos to keep out a Selu header on the half hour mark before Vicente played a long downfield ball to Molina to spur the very first Torry break. An exquisite through ball to Beltran should have been converted but the striker somehow screwed his effort wide with the Paterna goal opening up at his front.

As the teams strolled off for the interval at 0-0, but with Buñol leading by the only goal of the game at Villarreal, the half time talk took on even greater significance for the Torrevieja manager.

Unfortunately it seemed as though the players had not been listening because any additional effort displayed by Torry was barely noticeable.

It was still the home side that was calling the shots and both centre back Duco and centre forward Civera could have wrapped up the game early in the second half.

However the Paterna number 9 did come good with 10 minutes played as he unleashed a bullet of a strike to put the home side in front.

At this stage it was all Paterna and with Pedreño playing his final card when bringing on three attackers midway through the half, it really was a bold move from the Torry manager. But his side were being kept to long range efforts by their opponents with Xenxe in the Paterna goal rarely getting a touch.

And when Javi Meca was dismissed for a second yellow on 75 minutes it really did look over for the visitors.

As Paterna continued to frustrate their guests, and with the extra man beginning to tell, a final mix up in the Torry box let in Tobias who was able to beat Jose Carlos at his far post.

And the salt was rubbed even deeper into the Torry wounds as Muro won at Villarreal and Almoradi capitulated to Muro, dropping the Salineros even closer toward the bottom rung.

On the players coach during the homeward journey a club spokesman attempted to keep a positive outlook telling The Leader "We have to take it on the chin. It's going to be a huge summer for us in terms of recruitment, and conversations with the President are coming - we have to recruit well, be strong next year and bounce back, starting with a win next Sunday at home to Borriol.“

San Javier GS ‘Team Traffic Lights’ Competition at La Serena Another excellent turnout by San Javier Golf Society, (including several new members) teed off in perfect conditions at La Serena for this popular format of team competition.

There was some excellent individual scoring, most notably by John Hillier and Mick Hardy but the overall winners were the team consisting of Roger McGeagh, David Summers, Mick Hardy and Alan Brooke, with a total of 119 points.

Nearest the pins were won by Dave Furze, David Archer, Tom Collins and Alan Brooke. The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was not won and rolls over to the

next game, which is an individual stableford qualifier at Font del Llop, teeing off at 9:20am on Wednesday 17th May. Full details will be emailed to all members.

Payday will be on Saturday 13th May, between 11am and 12 in the bar area at La Serena Golf Clubhouse, Los Alcázares.
