ilar de la Horadada has been honored as European City of Sport 2026 at the European Parliament, a recognition from ACES Europe celebrating towns that promote health, sport, culture, tourism, and connection with nature.

Shared with municipalities across more than 15 countries, the accolade highlights the town’s commitment to active living, with 71% of residents regularly using sports facilities.

Mayor Jose Maria Perez, Sports Councilor Jose Antonio Martinez, and Sports Director Pedro Quesada received the award at a ceremony attended by nearly 500 participants from over 70 countries. Martinez said that in Pilar de la Horadada, sport is “a lifestyle experienced in every corner, from the coast and mountains to historic sites.”

The municipality was recognised for its high-quality sports infrastructure and integration of sport with tourism, culture, and nature.

Facilities include football fields, indoor and outdoor multipurpose courts, athletics tracks, swimming pools, climbing walls, paddle courts, a youth hostel, and planned courts for basketball, volleyball, and psychomotor activities.

Sports programs are inclusive, supporting families, singleparent households, and people with disabilities, with the local health system subsidizing prescribed physical activity.

The town also collaborates with tourism initiatives, joining the Valencian Network of Smart Tourist Destinations to enhance sustainability and innovation.

Pilar de la Horadada joins 14 other European towns with the 2026 City of Sport title.

Next year, coinciding with its 40th anniversary of independence, the town will host sports events promoting inclusion, sustainability, and quality of life, reinforcing its identity as a city where sport is central to community and culture.

IS THE ORIHUELA COSTA POISED TO GET IT’S SECOND MEDICAL CENTRE? fter years of delays, Orihuela Costa may finally see the construction of a second health centre, as the Orihuela City Council prepares to take on the project following delegated responsibilities from the Valencian regional government.

Funding for the new facility will come from the Generalitat Valenciana, with the proposal set to be presented at the city plenary meeting tomorrrow, Tuesday, December 23.

While the initiative received support from all parties, Ciudadanos objected to the early date, arguing procedural rules should push the meeting to the next working day.

The project falls under a renewed health-sector version of the Generalitat’s “Plan Edificant,” which allows municipalities to oversee the construction or expansion of primary healthcare centres while the regional government covers costs.

The aim is to improve healthcare infrastructure in fastgrowing areas, including Orihuela Costa, Burriana, Santa Pola, Torrent-El Vedat, and Mislata.

Orihuela’s mayor has long championed the initiative.

Though promised by former regional president Carlos Mazon, it was initially excluded from budgets, which instead allocated e4 million for refurbishing the existing Aguamarina-La Regia-Cabo Roig health centre, serving around 30,000 year-round residents—a figure that triples during peak tourist seasons. Residents have awaited either an expansion or a second facility for five years.

In November 2024, a 12,000-square-metre plot in Villa Rosa was allocated for the new centre, roughly six kilometres from the current facility.

Plans call for a five-storey building with ample parking, zoning changes, project design, tendering, and construction phases yet to begin.

The proposed facility will include primary care (family medicine, nursing, paediatrics, midwifery, social work), support units (dentistry, sexual health, rehabilitation, radiology), and emergency services, designed to meet the needs of a growing population and complement nearby services, including the Acequion health centre in Torrevieja.

Abandoned Landmark to Become Lagoon Viewpoint in Eco-Friendly Urban Renewal orrevieja City Council has taken a major step toward redeveloping the residential area near the Torrevieja salt lagoon, widely known for the small chalets once given away by the popular 1980s Spanish TV show Un, dos,

After six years of planning and repeated promises, the ˇ9.66 million project has finally been approved, although significant administrative and environmental approvals are still required.

Clearance is needed from the Ministry for Ecological Transition to allow the relocation of the controversial mud spa building, now in public domain, and from the Generalitat due to the site’s proximity to the Natural Park of the Lagunas. Given these pending steps, residents of Las Torretas may not see tangible results during the current municipal term.

The redevelopment project, officially known as “Convenio C-2 Punta de la Vibora” (popularly Torreta III), targets three main areas. The first phase focuses on creating a 127,000 m2 green and recreational space along the lagoon, including a 35,000 m2 park and plans to integrate the iconic mud spa “Caracola” by Toyo Ito as a public viewpoint.

This structure, abandoned and controversial since its construction in the early 2000s, would be relocated outside the public coastal domain, pending approval from the Ministry for Ecological Transition.

The second phase involves partial redevelopment of the residential area, including resurfacing approximately half of the streets over 40,000 m2, renovating urban services such as water, sanitation, electricity, and street lighting, and paving.

The plan does not include full reurbanisation of internal streets and utilities, as these remain under the ownership of the original developer, and most homes lack a homeowners’ association to authorise improvements.

The goal is to obtain reports quickly and begin construction in the first half of 2026.

The project reflects a long-standing electoral promise and includes efforts to rehabilitate the Mud Spa structure for compatible public use, preserving an unusual architectural landmark while revitalising a degraded urban area.

The Rojales Pantomime Group delighted audiences with their festive performance of Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre from December 11–13.

Audiences praised the show for its vibrant costumes, lively singing and dancing, humour, and memorable characters, particularly Granny Gertie, the Dame. Directed by Julia Parker, the production showcased the combined efforts of the cast, backstage crew, sound and lighting teams, and Front of House staff, creating a magical evening of entertainment.

A highlight for the performers was seeing children actively engage with the characters, cheering for the Goodies and booing the Baddies, especially the Big Bad Wolf. All ticket sales proceeds will be donated to local charities, with the specific recipients and amounts to be confirmed in the New Year.

Planning for next year’s pantomime is already underway, promising more festive fun and theatrical delight.

Continue to do this and place 3 cards on the table. Open your eyes. There is a very strong likelihood that one of the three cards on the table is the one that you were merely thinking about!

Try a similar exercise with your partner or friend. Get them to mix a pack of cards and decide beforehand what card they will choose for you to find. They place five face down cards on the table and tell you that their chosen card is amongst the five. Your job is to hover your hand above the five and when you get that “feeling” of their card, let your hand gently drop on one card.

JOHN GEORGE MURDER SUSPECT’S WIFE ARRESTED AND BAILED TWICE IN 3 MONTHS The case surrounding the murder of Northern Irishman John George Hardy in Rojales has taken a dramatic turn, with both the alleged killer and his wife recently released on bail amid separate incidents on the Costa Blanca.

Jonathan Alan Smyth, accused of killing his compatriot with two gunshots last year in Rojales, was released from Villena prison last Wednesday after paying e100,000 bail set by the Torrevieja Court of Instruction Number 2.

While there is sufficient evidence to maintain the homicide charge, the judge ruled that pretrial detention was no longer necessary, provided the accused complied with precautionary measures, including daily court appearances and a ban on leaving the country without judicial authorisation.

The Public Prosecutor and private prosecution opposed bail, and the victim’s family has filed an appeal, which is still pending.

On the same day, his wife, Madison Smyth, a 20-year-old British OnlyFans model, was released on bail after being arrest- ance and murder of John George; however, ed the previous morning by the Guardia Civil in Punta Prima, Mr. George’s family have accused her of being involved in trying to cover up the killing.

The court also ordered the defendants and their parents to compensate Cloe’s family for moral damages. The former boyfriend faces additional proceedings for alleged domestic abuse. Both defendants pleaded guilty, but no plea agreement was reached, and their cooperation did not reduce their sentences.

Investigators found the killing was planned over weeks as gender-based violence after Cloe ended the relationship. Mobile phone evidence, location data, and biological traces linked them to the crime.

Messages revealed they boasted about the murder and attempted to cover up evidence. Despite confessions, the court maintained full sentences, citing the premeditated and cruel nature of the attack, including luring Cloe to a dark alley and stabbing her with a knife.

I hadn’t known about it till a reader emailed me, a long time back.

Being ever conscious of the quality of the sages stories to follow; I won’t retell mine here … buy Gerd’s book if you want!

We have previously written and quoted the great American philosopher, Yogi Berra. My favourite is probably; ‘when you come to a ‘Y’ in the road, take it.’ All my family and friends have had that one thrust upon them from time to time.

Old Irish sayings have been widely quoted here; but this week let us look at some of the old folksy American witticisms. Will Rogers was one of the best of this batch.

How this cowboy and bush pilot manufactured so much wisdom under his cowboy hat, places Will in the realms of intellectual genius.

Here are a few examples so you can make up your own mind.

So moving quickly on after that one, let us digest what Hal Roach had to say about the Laws of Air Travel, in Gerd’s book.

or visitors to Spain, the festive season can be full of surprises. Between Christmas and New Year, ancient religious commemorations blend effortlessly with playful satire, noisy street celebrations and rituals that might seem baffling at first glance.

Yet these customs, some centuries old and others born of necessity or humour, form an essential part of Spain’s cultural fabric.

FIRE AND FOLKLORE IN XIXONA In Xixona, best known for its nougat, Christmas traditions take a more elemental form. One of the most striking is “roar les aixames”, or spinning the aixames, practised on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. As night falls, children gather in the main square on Avenida de la Constituci?n carrying torches made from esparto grass. Parents light the torches, and the children spin them in wide circles, testing their courage and coordination as sparks fly.

Although now largely a playful ritual, the custom dates back to a time when children would walk through the town at night visiting relatives and friends to celebrate the birth of Christ.

In return, they received the esgarrinxada — gifts of nougat, walnuts, figs and other sweets.

Today, it is Spain’s answer to April Fools’ Day, when pranks, jokes and gentle deception are widely accepted. Newspapers run spoof stories, friends trick one another, and the unsuspecting are warned to be on their guard. But in one Valencian town, the tradition goes far beyond practical jokes.

IBI AND THE RULE OF FLOUR In the town of Ibi, 28 December is marked by one of the most anarchic and entertaining fiestas in the region: Els Enfarinats. Long before dawn, a group of locals symbolically seize power, forming a mock government that takes control of the town for the day.

By the end of the day, the streets are white with flour and laughter. It is chaotic, noisy and deliberately ridiculous, yet beneath the spectacle lies a tradition of social satire that allows the community to poke fun at power and bureaucracy, if only for a few hours.

A SACRED RIDE THROUGH TIME IN ELCHE While Ibi embraces disorder, Elche observes 28 December with solemnity and reverence, commemorating a legend that lies at the heart of the city’s identity.

A DAY FOR JOKES WITH A DARK ORIGIN

Dressed in eccentric costumes and armed with sacks of flour, eggs and vegetables, the Enfarinats appoint themselves mayor, councillors and officials. Their mission is to parody authority, turning the town upside down through absurd laws that are designed to be broken.

According to tradition, in the late 14th century a coastguard named Francesc Canto discovered a small boat stranded on the sands of Tamarit beach near Santa Pola. Inside a chest lay an image of the Virgin Mary. Recognising the importance of his find, Canto mounted his horse and rode at full speed to Elche to alert the authorities.

One of the most curious dates in the Spanish calendar is 28 December, known as the Dia de los Santos Inocentes — the Day of the Holy Innocents. Its origins lie in a tragic biblical event: the massacre of the children of Bethlehem ordered by King Herod. Over time, however, the day has taken on a very different tone.

No walking in the sun — or the shade. No smoking. No drinking. No using the pavement or the road. Anyone caught defying these nonsensical rules faces mock fines and a barrage of flour. The “opposition” — representing the real town council — is mercilessly targeted, publicly mocked for promises made and never kept.

The event is re-enacted every year in a ceremony known as La Venida de la Mare de Deu de l’Assumpcio. On the morning of 28 December, a rider retraces Canto’s route, galloping through the streets and proclaiming the news. Hundreds of people follow, escorting the statue as it makes its way to the centre of the city.

The tradition itself is relatively modern, originating less than a century ago when Spanish grape growers faced an overabundant harvest.

What began as a clever marketing solution has since become an unbreakable custom.

Many British residents enjoy a double celebration, marking midnight with the Spanish clock and again an hour later on UK time.

Ski and Snowboard Trip to Sierra Nevada Torrevieja’s Department of Youth has announced a weekend ski and snowboard trip to the Sierra Nevada resort in Granada, scheduled for March 6–8, 2026.

Organized through the Torrevieja Youth Information and Activity Center (CIAJ), the initiative is primarily aimed at young people aged 16 to 35, though it is also open to all ages and families.

The e298 package includes return bus transport from Torrevieja, half-board accommodation in quadruple rooms at Apartamentos Montegorbea in Pradollano, two-day ski passes, picnic lunches on the slopes, equipment rental, group ski or snowboard lessons, and insurance.

he Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has completed a e3.5 million modernization and energyefficiency upgrade of the AP-7 tunnel in Pilar de la Horadada, funded through the European Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

The 794-metre tunnel, operating since 2001 and carrying around 28,000 vehicles daily, links the town centre with the Torre de la Horadada expansion area.

The project focused on improving road safety and reducing energy consumption, most notably through the installation of

an intelligent LED lighting management system. Additional upgrades include a new power supply, enhanced evacuation signage, a public address system, CCTV with Automatic Incident Detection, fibre-optic communications, variable speed-limit panels, entrance barriers and comprehensive fire-protection measures.

Fire safety improvements feature two pressurised vestibules and underground water reservoirs.

Deputy Government Delegate in Alicante Juan Antonio Nieves said the works demonstrate how European funding delivers tangible benefits, improving safety

while supporting sustainable infrastructure. He added that the tunnel now complies with advanced European safety and environmental standards.

The project experienced delays following a serious accident in May, when a truck overturned and caught fire, forcing a temporary closure of the tunnel.

Despite this setback, the main works are now complete.

Final integration, testing and system verification will continue until January 31, 2026, ensuring full operational reliability and long-term efficiency for this key transport link.

Places are limited, with a minimum of 25 participants required for the trip to go ahead. Registration and reservations must be completed at the CIAJ by January 31, with further information available through the center or the municipal website.

SPAIN SLAMS AIRBNB WITH HEFTY FINE Spain has fined Airbnb e64 million for advertising thousands of unlicensed holiday rental properties, marking one of its toughest actions yet against short-term lets. The fine follows an investigation by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, which found more than 65,000 listings breached consumer protection rules.

Airbnb has been ordered to remove

the listings and says it will challenge the decision in court.

The crackdown reflects growing concern that short-term rentals are worsening housing shortages and pushing up rents in cities such as Barcelona and Madrid, fuelling antitourism protests. Torrevieja Winners of Window Display Contest Torrevieja celebrated the winners of the 22nd Christmas Window Display Contest on December 12, 2025.

The jury, comprising representatives from local business and hospitality associations and the city’s Trade Area Technician, selected the top displays based on creativity and festive spirit.

Residents of Campoverde have once again demonstrated remarkable generosity, supporting the San Jose Obrero orphanage in Orihuela with Christmas gifts. The initiative, organised by Campoverde Church in the Community, the local English-speaking Anglican Church, ensures that every child in the orphanage receives a present.

Working alongside local organisations and the Iceland Overseas Food Store, the Church arranged for community members to donate gift

boxes to named children.

This year, 115 gift boxes were contributed, alongside 122 chocolate treats, two teddy bears, several model cars, and four bicycles.

Church Warden Maggie Dew praised the community’s spirit, saying, “I am always amazed at the generosity of Campoverde residents. Every year we get more presents, and this year they have truly surpassed themselves. This is the true Christian spirit of Christmas, remembering those less fortunate than ourselves.”

The orphanage project is part of a wider programme of community engagement

by Campoverde Church, which hosts numerous events throughout the year for people of all ages. Dew highlighted the Church’s commitment to taking faith beyond its walls and meeting local needs. ORIHUELA APPROVES e320,000 FOR CHURCH RESTORATIONS Orihuela City Council has allocated e320,000 in grants for the restoration of local churches, funded through the 2025 municipal budget for historical and cultural heritage. The largest grant of e200,000 will go to the Parish of Saints Justa and Rufina (pictured left) for the restoration of the dome of its Chapel of Communion, with expenditure justification required within five business days.

Two rural churches will each receive e60,000 for rehabilitation: San Jose de La Murada and Our Lady of Bethlehem. The restoration work for these churches is scheduled between September 1 and December 5, 2025, with supporting documentation due by December 15, 2025.

The grants were formally announced following a Local Governing Board meeting on December 2nd.

TORREVIEJA U3A ENDS THE YEAR WITH FESTIVE CHEER AT CMO

Irene Oliva, Crescendo’s Music Director and pianist, Carlos Almela, are both accomplished musicians Crescendo International Choir performed two Christmas concerts in December, singing popular songs in English and Spanish, including The Little Drummer Boy, Campana Sobre Campana and I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas.

The first concert was held Sunday night, December 14 at Iglesia de Santiago de Apostol in Benijofar. The following night, the choir gave a concert at La Siesta Evangelical Church in Torrevieja.

At the second concert, a Scottish bagpipe player, Donnie MacDiarmid, also performed a few Christmas carols as the choir sang along.

Funds raised at the Benijofar event went to support the Benijofar social services food bank while funds raised at the La Siesta event went to support church causes, including financial support for a girls orphanage in Mozambique.

Also in December, Crescendo International Choir was featured on a local television program, high-

Last Monday, the Torrevieja U3A held its final official meeting of the year at the CMO hall, treating members to a delightful morning of entertainment and celebration.

The festivities kicked off with a lively performance by the Costa Blanca Morris Dancing Group, bringing energy and tradition to the hall. Music lovers were then treated to a heartwarming selection of Christmassy songs performed by the Costa Blanca Singers, filling the room with seasonal cheer.

The morning concluded with a sumptuous sit-down buffet provided by the CMO catering staff, giving everyone the perfect chance to relax and enjoy a festive meal together.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable and memorable way to round off the year.

Looking ahead, the U3A will resume meetings on Monday, 26th January, with the highly anticipated Groups Fair.

This event is designed for both new visitors and existing members eager to explore the wide range of activities U3A offers.

Presentations from many of the association’s groups will be on display, and attendees will have the opportunity to join for the new year.

Those with skills or talents they wish to share are warmly invited to get involved, making the upcoming year even more vibrant and engaging.

Moments later, the Ibense goalkeeper was called into action twice in quick succession, first saving Matias’ low drive from the left side of the box and then dealing with a long-range Torrevieja free kick.

Next up a home match against Carcaixent on 10 January SC Torrevieja ended 2025 with a valuable 1–0 away victory over Rayo Ibense ‘A’, a result that strengthened their hold on second place and ensured they remained within touching distance of leaders Benidorm, who remain four points ahead following their narrow 3-2 success away at Calpe.

Torrevieja coach Piquero made a slight tactical adjustment, reverting to a back four with leftback Alex returning to the starting XI, while

winger Caleb was named among the substitutes. The visitors travelled in confident mood but were immediately tested by an Ibense side desperate to halt their slide down the table.

The opening exchanges were scrappy and disjointed, with neither side able to establish control. Play was briefly halted on ten minutes when Ibense’s Manresa suffered a shoulder injury. Although he attempted to continue, he was eventually forced off and replaced

The breakthrough arrived on 28 minutes following a costly defensive error. A misunderstanding between the Ibense goalkeeper and his centre-back left the ball loose inside the penalty area, and Torrevieja’s leading scorer Ismail reacted quickest to stab the ball into the bottom corner.

Ibense continued to push for an equaliser, forcing goalkeeper Pizarro into a smart save from the edge of the area before a rebound was blazed over. Late drama followed when Ibense appealed unsuccessfully for a penalty, leading to a member of the home coaching staff being sent off for dissent.

The final whistle confirmed a crucial three points for Torrevieja heading into the winter break, while Ibense were left frustrated after a spirited second-half performance.

Last time we were here it was WINDY, this time it was WET - so consistency at least.

The forecast was sketchy from the off and leaving home just south of Algorfa the heavens were already doing their best impression of the Wet Wet Wet back catalogue. Still, as golfers, we live in hope. After all, a couple of kilometres down the road can mean sunshine… or more rain. Spoiler alert: more rain.

We arrived with just one late cancellation, teed off optimistically, and almost immediately the droplets returned and the sky took on that familiar “you’re not finishing dry” look. Undeterred, we pressed on like hardy little soldiers (some less “little” than others). A few sensibly threw in the towel and the card, quite literally - but the majority soldiered on to the bitter, soggy end.

To be fair, the course was in great nick and the greens were superb… at least until a couple of hours of steady soaking put things firmly out of the hands of the ground

staff. In total, 29 brave souls teed it up, including two guests.

Many arrived in festive attire, though once waterproofs, bobble hats and survival gear were deployed, you’d never have guessed Christmas was just around the corner.

Salvation came at Silverstones Bar & Grill where Mike and the crew did not disappoint, serving up a very welcome turkey and stuffing baguette with chips - exactly what the doctor orders after 18 holes of

aquatic golf. Naturally, the later tee-timers were rewarded for their patience as the big yellow thing in the sky finally appeared and dried everything out nicely.

Scores were, shall we say, varied.

Only two players managed to break the 30-point barrier, but in a reduced two-division format the winners were: Gold: Dave Rowe (32 points and top score of the day), Silver: Robin Eastman (29 points), Best Guest: John Colbert (29 pts)

Our latest visit to A Helping Hand was another reminder of the difference this group makes.

Next Blob Tin mission: Help at Home in Playa Flamenca - let’s do it again.

The last Carp-R-Us match of 2025 was fished at the El Bosquet complex. After several days of stormy weather, the match took place in wall-to-wall sunshine, pleasant temperatures and a light breeze, excellent for the time of year.

Unfortunately, while the weather was great to fish in, it didn´t seem to be to the fishes liking and the match was a struggle for everyone.

Two sections were fished, pegs 1 to 9 being one, 10 to 18 the other. The first section was a disaster and was won by Willy Moons with a lowly 2.16kg from peg 3 with Tony Flett runner-up with 0.56kg, no one else weighed in.

The other section was won by Trevor Morrey with 8.38kg from peg 14 caught of feeder using mini wafters, runner-up on this section was Steve Fell who used feeder and maggots to catch 6.02kg from peg 12.

All in all, a disappointing final outing.

HIGH OUTS: D Hurcombe 92, D Sanderson 114, D Ralph 118, P Spence 120 180's: V Bobinas, M Farmer, P Spence, P Christopher BEST FANCY DRESS - A Skinner TONS - 1000's League sponsor Casey Shaddock paired with Graham White to "see off" two decent pairs before succumbing to the Fairy and Hound (not a pub) but Amanda Skinner and Mark Farmer.

Fancied pairing of Monique Eldenbos and Carlos Escansiano went out in the 2nd round to Chelsea Campbell and Vycka Bobinas, who subsequently went out to board winners Mitch Halliday and Ernie Willis.

Paul Tollafield and Dons Ralph were both in fine form, deservedly winning board 4. Darren Sanderson and Bliss Wright both found big trebles with ease, to find themselves in the board final.

They both outscored opponents Yvonne Rouffignac and Pete Spence, both duo's missing doubles, Roofers and Spence winning 2-1.

Halliday and Willis couldn't reproduce their earlier form losing out 3-0 to Farmer and Skinner in the semi, Ralph and Tollafield managing a 2nd leg out,in their semi, eventually losing out to a scoring blitz from Rouffignac and Spence.

Farmer opened the final with a 180, followed by D20 to go 1 up.

This years Mixed event was hosted by San Miguel's, spacious Meeting Point venue.

As is customary many turned up in fancy dress and even played in their chosen attire. Santas, Fairies, Hounds and even a "He Man" looking remarkably like Darren Sanderson were in abundance.

There is absolutely no truth in the story of the "Hound" leaving a calling card outside the mens' facility.

Spence responded with a maxi in the 2nd, his partner completing 501 on D9. A 125, 120 out from Spence gave the pair a 2-1 advantage, partner Rouffignac taking the 4th and title on D5.

Prizes of wine, kindly donated by hosts Meeting Point were presented to both semi and finalists.
