Just over a year since the Withdrawal Agreement TIE (Tarjeta Identidad de

Extranjero) was launched, the latest figures published by the Spanish Government reveal that over a third of UK Nationals in Spain now have the biometric card that explicitly recognises their rights under the Withdrawal Agreement.

Commenting on the figures, HMA Hugh Elliott said: “It’s great to hear that so many UK Nationals now have the TIE and I’m sure that the next set of figures will show an even higher number.

First freight train bound for UK leaves Alicante Alicante Port has taken a decisive step in its goal of becoming an intermodal platform for freight traffic.

The concessionaire company ‘Terminales Marítimas del Sureste’ (TMS) has now finalised it's preparations to start up the new line which will promote commercial relations between the Mediterranean arc and the United Kingdom, with special attention to exporting companies in the province of Alicante.

The first departure, at 5.30 pm last Thursday, saw 15 goods wagons full of perishable and refrigerated products bound for the Barking terminal in London, fruit and vegetables, mainly from the Vega Baja, destined for the warehouses of British

The train was on it’s way back to Alicante within 24 hours, after agreement was reached to transport goods on the return journey also, which ensures that the tip will be profitable and optimize the costs of the operation.

This was the very last obstacle to be overcome prior to the line being put into operation. The intention is that the service will operate on a weekly basis as a green alternative to road transport.

BITES CONSELL TO STOP REMOVAL OF ALGAE Tourist Drug Haul in La Mata Torrevieja Local Police intervened last Thursday as they were alerted to packages containing more than 40 kilos of hashish on the beach of La Mata, in the vicinity of la torre del embarcadero.

The algae accumulates in large quantities, creating barriers that protect the beach from the loss of sand and provide nutrients to the sandy environment.

Of special environmental value, the meadows reduce the energy of the waves and currents, reducing erosion and the loss of sand on the beaches, where they also play an active role in natural regeneration, allowing new growths and bonding the sediment.

Spanish police investigating a Mazarron care company that allegedly cheated at least one elderly and vulnerable British customer out of her savings and property have arrested two women and seized €45,000 (£38,000) in cash.

The removal of the algae also represents a large expense for the town councils in tourist municipalities, and a significant income for cleaning companies.

Despite the fact that many locals know the favourable effects of its accumulation, and that its presence is synonymous with environmental quality, tourists associate the presence of banquettes, or the smell that posidonia gives off in the sun, with negligence and disease, resulting in complaints that have even led to demonstrations due to the presence of algae.

It is a historical research book that takes us gthrough 248 years of Municipal history.

The book gives an insight to the origins of the Villa de Rojales after the separation from Guardamar, to all the mayors since 1773, and other historical curiosities.

Objections to the proposed construction of the 2,200 new dwellings by the promoter Gomiendo are not new, they have been going on for many years, but while the Orihuela Council and it’s Department of the Environment, led by Councillor Damaso Aparicio, claim that they care about the environment, spending fortunes on the protection of wildlife, flora and fauna, along other stretches of the coastline, their Inconsistency with regard to Cala Mosca, about which they have said very little in it’s defence, is shameful.

They also state that the proposed development project is full of irregularities, without an official opinion on environmental impact and with a report from Public Works objecting to it due to its impact on the N-332 road. "This City Council does not appreciate its surroundings as it continues to promote the destruction of its natural wealth," they warn, while also stating that "the residents of Orihuela Costa are tired of asking for the services they deserve."

The Civil Guard have arrested a man who is alleged to have killed his wife and cutting up her body parts - before dumping them into rubbish bins in Torrevieja.

Police were alerted after a man was searching through bins behind shops on Calle Luis Cánovas Martínez in Aguas Nueva.

During his search he found two human legs and an arm. Police attended the scene and the area was cordoned off.

A search was carried out within the immediate area and the Guardia Civil found additional body parts.

According to state news agency EFE, the alleged suspect was identified, via CCTV security cameras.

A 70-year-old Finnish man has been arrested for allegedly dissecting his 68-year-old wife and placing her body parts in rubbish bins in Torrevieja.

German driver dies in traffic accident in Pilar de la Horadada

Greenpeace, meanwhile, say that they are aware of the case which appeared in their 2019 diagnostic report, but they do not have the capacity to act on all cases that are threatening the coastline, especially with Cala Mosca, where they state that legal action is needed to try to stop the building process.

A 66-year-old German driver has died on Wednesday afternoon after he was involved in a traffic accident driving along the N-332 road as it passed through Pilar de la Horadada, according to sources from the Information Center and Coordination of Emergencies (CICU) and the Civil Guard of Traffic.

The CICU was alerted at 5:10 p.m. of the accident at kilometre 41 of the N-332 road and sending a SAMU ambulance and another Basic Life Support unit to the scene. However, the SAMU paramedics were only been able to confirm the death of the driver.

The accident occurred under a bridge with the car crashing into it’s concrete support, according to the Civil Guard and the Provincial Firefighters Consortium, which sent several officers and vehicles to the scene.

The section of the road where the accident occurred is known as the Alpuente bridge, and provides both the access and exit to the north of the urban area of Pilareño.

At least the price had been reduced, especially for me, I was pleased to note.

A novelty used to be an inexpensive ornament, a trinket, a bauble, a souvenir of a holiday we would rather forget.

Something we might buy to prevent a doorstep traveller cursing us, perhaps, or as a gift for a friend we would rather not see again.

The email writer suggested the first 2 steps to novelty -- 'leaving home, leaving the country' - will make 'a routine experience like buying vegetables new all over again.' Buying vegetables would certainly be a

new experience for me. And leaving home has indeed become a novelty in the past year or so.

I sometimes adjust a chess piece without intending to move it (you have to say "J'adoube," pardon my French) but I don't easily adjust to novelty or innovation.

Waiting in a socially-distanced queue of oldies to collect my statins, I scrutinise pharmacy shelves for a bottle labelled A Cure for Novelty, but see only novelty cures.

Potato peel carried in your pocket cures toothache, are you kidding me?

I am aware that adopting new lifestyles or finding alternative hobbies has helped many people to pass the time during lockdown -- a bit like convicts taking up weightlifting -- but I have no desire to learn Esperanto or practise karate moves in the living room. Although I believe there is one called the roundhouse kick which might move me out from under my wife's feet. And nearer to the fridge.

Perhaps I'm not as feeble-minded as I thought. I'm sending for that adjustable hula hoop. They're offering it to me at a special price.

‘Courtesy is Contagious.’

know you don’t give two hoots where I first saw the sign, Lads – but just in case that Mick Duffy should ever ask the question in one of his quizzes; it was behind a saloon bar in San Diego.

I have reprinted it and posted it on the wall many times in the intervening years. The message is just three simple words; ‘courtesy is contagious.’ It would be there to let customers know that staff are to be nice to them – but it also serves as a subtle reminder to those being served, that they can be nice to the staff as well!

There is no doubt about it but that the vast majority of people will respond to kindness with kindness. My Aunt Kathleen used always say, ‘it’s nice to be nice.’ Of course Auntie was correct – even if there was none quicker to let rip when she was ‘roused!’

None of us are perfect, (Please take down your hand, Darling) and we can all loose our cool sometimes. This allows discourteous words to bypass the brain – or diarrhoea of the mouth, if you prefer to call it that. If only we always thought before we spoke – and even if the other fellow is discourteous, remember that a person’s character can be measured by what it takes to make him angry.

Courtesy is simply exercising polite behaviour and polite actions. The first courtesy we are taught as children is to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ Those

three words will never go out of fashion.

A ‘courtesy call’ on the telephone to thank somebody for a kind thought or deed, will be deeply appreciated and ensure that same courtesy will be returned. Despite all the modern technology and instant communication, there is nothing to equal a hand-written note when it comes down to ‘polite behaviour and polite action.

As far as this courteous columnist (!) is concerned, one of the most discourteous behaviours is bad timekeeping. It declares that the person arriving late is much more important than those there at the appointed time.

It is usually the same people who come in last at a meeting, or leave you twirling your coffee on your own at the agreed time.

In fairness, I have to say that punctuality has improved enormously at meetings in recent years.

Back in the day, when I would be rushing to get out the door for a meeting; Mrs Youcantbeserious would look at the clock with the words, “you’ll be the only one there.” My reply was always the same; “if there’s only one person going to make the meeting on time, it’ll be me.” Doesn’t it say somewhere that ‘punctuality is the politeness of kings?’

Lack of civility is the opposite of courteousness. As we have said, ‘courtesy is contagious’, but it is also the same with rudeness. When someone is uncivil to us, the immediate reaction is often an irrational one. ‘Feck him, I’ll put this fellow in his place’. We shouldn’t do that! Anger should never be met with anger. I have no control

A word that springs to mind when displaying a courtesy in the face of rudeness in ‘dignity.’ ‘Civility costs nothing and buys everything’, I read somewhere and this is why the most successful people are ‘people’s people.’

Courtesy is contagious because it is passed from person to person, and it would be wonderful if each of us could exemplify courtesy is our everyday lives..

We shouldn’t ever wait to see how the other person treats us, before showing respect and courtesy to the other. Not to do so is the same as insisting that the other driver dips his headlights before you do.

In my book, the greatest courtesy of all is where the courteous person is bestowing kindness on someone they

But even when courtesy isn’t contagious and doesn’t ‘take’ … you stay courteous and let that be who you are!

Once planted, Begonias care is simple, just regularly dead-head any spent blooms, pinch back. Watering correctly is important for their care with soil kept moist, but not overly wet.

Water at the base of the plant, to avoid leaf spot and the possibility of fungal diseases.

Cut back plants before any frost, they can then be used as a houseplant over the winter months for some bright colour.

Once inside, place in a bright filtered light area, keeping the soil moist and provide a little humidity by spraying weekly.

Propagation is easy, simply divide the plants in the Spring, which will provide you with more plants.

INTERNATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH As you are aware, October, being International Breast Cancer Awareness month has for the past 7 years been marked by Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers in collaboration with the management of Zenia Boulevard and this year was no exception.

Once again, the event was supported by local artists who entertained the Boulevard shoppers.

The Boulevard management donated EURO 500 raised from members of the public walking a total of 50 kilometers on a treadmill provided by Decathlon, the Boulevard management also donated hundreds of potted plants to be given to shoppers at the Centre by the Pink Ladies and Panthers.

The Pink Ladies received an unexpected visit to their stand by the Mayor of Orihuela Emilio Bascuñana.

Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus hit the ground running when they returned to rehearsals at the beginning of September.

In the lead up to the seasonal festivities, with invitations to sing at various venues in Los Alcázares, San Javier, Balsicas, Cabo Roig, Sucina and Estrella de Mar, they began refreshing their Christmas repertoire.

“After the past two years of uncertainty and sadness, we are so looking forward to singing and celebrating Christmas in public again” remarked Spangles’ Musical Director, Valerie Lynch. “We’ve been working hard on our Christmas repertoire since our return, so that we can celebrate with our local community and give something back.”

But a bout of flu, an attack of bronchitis, even a heavy cold can all leave your immune defences in rags.

Give yourself a break. Your body needs time and tender loving care to get itself up and running again.

Toning, nourishing and stimulating herbs can be real friends at such times. And some of the most helpful will already be at hand, in your own kitchen.

Cinnamon has awesome antiseptic powers but it's also a wonderful tonic, especially for people worn out by battling a bug.

Trust the French to come up with this delicious way of exploiting its powers: in a wine, to be drunk hot and comforting.

Stress and exhaustion are nothing new; nineteenth-century Edinburgh herbalist Duncan Napier saw plenty of patients suffering from just that.

He made up for them what he called his Nerve Debility Tonic, in which oats were a key ingredient.

Barley water was another Victorian sick-room staple and with reason: this marvellous grain helps restore energy, revive appetite, rebuild strength and generally speed recovery from that debilitating illness. It helps heal inflammatory conditions right through the gut.

And it's also rich in vitamins and minerals, especially iron and B vitamins. To make it, put 50g of unrefined pot barley in a pan with 600ml of water, bring to the boil and simmer for thirty minutes.

Add 1.5 tablespoons of honey and stir well. Cool, strain, add the juice of half a lemon and drink it, lukewarm, throughout the day.

You can still buy it today from the herbal shops named after him. Now renamed Skullcap, Oat and Passionflower, it's an all-round tonic for nerves, digestion and the immune system —all likely to be in need of a little something to buck them up after a bout of flu.

SLIPPERY ELM A GREAT VICTORIAN FAVOURITE Slippery elm was a great Victorian favourite, one of the most useful remedies taught to European settlers by North American Indians. It's actually the inner bark of the American elm, and it's dried and powdered for use.

To prepare it, take a teaspoon of the powder, make it into a paste with cold water, and pour on a cupful of boiling water, stirring all the time.

Easily assimilated, it's especially useful if your digestive system is affected, as so often in illness, because the soft mucilage it contains is very healing for an irritated gut.

You may find it a bit bland: add a little honey and powdered cinnamon.

Another ingredient is gentian, from the roots of that pretty blue Alpine flower, a bitter herb that not only improves digestion and appetite, but can do wonders for the post-flu blues.

To make it, take a litre of a good, sweetish white wine, add to mint leaves and 25g of cinnamon bark, broken into shavings. Stopper the bottle and leave to infuse for three days, then strain and drink an occasional small glassful, heated.

If you want to stay off the alcohol, let it simmer gently for ten to fifteen minutes and the alcohol will evaporate.

The famous German herbalist Abbe Kneipp described oats as 'an excellent restorative for convalescents exhausted by serious illness, and no modern herbalist would disagree.

When you're feeling too knackered to cook a proper meal, go for a bowl of porridge, with a little cream and honey. It's made in minutes, is highly nourishing, easily digested, high in B vitamins, rich in useful minerals like iron and zinc, and a wonderful pick-me-up to the whole nervous system.

espite a busy lifestyle we would frequently go away in late summer and one of the locations we used to enjoy visiting was the calm and quiet Norfolk Broads.

And so, it was a bright sunny day when we pulled into a boat yard to collect the vessel we had hired.

There were just the two of us, my wife and I. We were shown around the delights of, I suppose what one would call half a narrow boat, as it was not the normal length of a standard version, but more than suitable for the ten days we planned touring the water ways.

What is a better way to start a holiday than to find a delightful restaurant and sit down to a decent meal. On this occa-

sion we had left the boat yard on a beautiful day, the sun bristling off the aquatics while we were chugging, I almost said sailing, along the waterways, as we looked out for such a place.

There it was standing upright and tall and very inviting. I guess we were a bit late for the best mooring outside the hostelry, however we found a spot a little way from the building beside a tall grass embankment. It was a lovely day, warm and bright as we secured the boat and climbed up the slope of the bank to the towpath and strolled along to the eatery.

Sometimes it is a little astonishing how quickly the weather can change. We were enjoying each other’s company when darkness fell across the windows as a rainstorm plundered the outside with water. We looked at each other, smiled and ordered another drink, certain in our mind that it would go as quickly as it had

arrived.

It didn’t! Closing time arrived.

The rain had eased a little, but it was still coming down heavily, however it was time to make our way along the towpath dressed in summery outfits.

Horror! The lovely looking grass embankment had turned to mud – with the wind blowing and with nowhere else to go, we slipped down its steep side, landing in the open end of the boat, both of us covered in greasy brown liquid. We laughed at the mess as we cleaned up. Well, we were on holiday.

The wind, which had arrived with the storm, did not abate.

In the morning it was still blowing strongly, so much so that it was pushing the boat broad side on, with its long flat side against the grassy edge of the river. The boat did not have enough power to force it into the wind and off the mooring. As it was not possible to navigate against the strength

of the airstream, the answer was to let the flow of the river take us away backwards.

NHS BUREAUCRACY There is a true story written by a recognised and respected journalist which sums up the situation in the United Kingdom, a government in power but with very little authority.

Richard Littlejohn is an established journalist whose career has lasted fifty or more years, and as he invites us to share his words, I will.

Richard Littlejohn’s words Last year, my left knee gave way. There was no chance of seeing my NHS GP, so I went private.

The consultant sent me for an MRI scan. I was offered an appointment the next day, at 7.40pm.

When I turned up at the diagnostic centre, the place was practically deserted. Given the late hour, I assumed I was their last patient.

'You must be rushed off your feet right now,' I remarked to the nurse. 'Not at all,' she said.

'We've been sitting here twiddling our thumbs all day.'

Why then, I wondered, hadn't I been offered an earlier time slot?

She explained that the NHS had booked the facility for the duration but hadn't bothered sending along any patients.

When I mentioned this to my consultant, he said it was par for the course. He told me that the NHS bureaucracy was ideologically opposed to using private healthcare.

So, while NHS hospitals were dealing exclusively with Covid cases, patients with other ailments were being denied treatment which was available else-

where — even though it was bought and paid for.

Back to me - In other words, we have a Government elected by a majority being prevented from moving forward on its programme by powerful forces within, who have their own agenda. Comparable to us with our boating experience, trapped with a controlling force stopping us from moving.

Perhaps that is why it is difficult to obtain a doctor’s appointment?

CHALKING IT UP: It seems to me the people in authority in the United Kingdom are hamstrung by laws that, in my opinion, should not have been introduced, as they must attend to simple complaints which have to be investigated, taking up real time and cost, to the detriment of other real Police matters.

However, it was refreshing to see a story where children, not old enough to be in double fig-

ures, instead of studying a flickering screen, with the chances of misinformation, were doing something real and progressive, using their young minds to develop games in the open air – they were playing Hopscotch by drawing squares on the pavement in chalk, which is not a permanent item as it washes off with a heavy dew or certainly when it rains, not unusual in the streets of Britain.

Very much to Sarah Goodwin, the mothers disgust, a neighbour complained about vandalising the pavement – but they did not stop there as they called the police who came to the scene to investigate the youngsters and the chalk lines on the pavement – surely the Police have enough to do without scrutinising children playing hopscotch with chalk squares on the pathway? GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB by Dave Webb

What a busy week for the boys and girls of Quesada bowls club! Due to the previous weeks abandoned matches, most players were required to don their bowls kit 3 times.

In the Voyager Division, Greenlands Chestnuts were away to Vistabella Eagles, Final scores were - Total shots for - 83, shots against - 40. Points scored for - 10 points against - 0.

There were 2 matches for both Swallows, Swans and Swifts, who overall performed admirably. Swallows had a Sunday morning rearranged match against Vistabella Lanzadores, with these trips the pick of the bunch in an 8-2 victory C Brazier, M France, J Prokopowycz 27-12.

In the Enterprise Division, The Sycamores away to San Miguel Beagles, Final score - Total shots for - 53, shots against - 80, Points 2-8.

Then on Friday, they visited El Rancho, where they won 2, lost 2 and drew overall shots (67-67), and once again it was the same motley crew who came out on top, as their team drew 5-5. The same day, Swans beat La Siesta Golds 8-2, with A Bowen, D Gould, S Cooper winning 23-11. Swans rearranged match at San Miguel was a day later, where against the boxers they lost 4-6, thanks to a 29-11 victory by D Benson, P Farrell, A Benson.

Finally, the last of our southern league teams had 2 brilliant results.

Swifts rearranged away match at Vistabella ended in a fine 8-2 victory, courtesy of this trips team - T Brinton, D Riley, J Pitt 18-9. Then 2 days later, they won 8-2 at home to El Rancho Broncos, where best scoring rink were T Brinton, S Jakeman, J Brinton 23-10.

Unbelievably, all 3 of our Monday South Alicante league sides recorded 10-0 victories. In the top division, Pearls best winning rink at Vistabella were M Highland, C Dye, C Highland (22-10), whilst in the 2nd division, P Rees, B Armstrong, B Rees (41-7) were top scorers for the Diamonds, home to La Siesta.

Last but not least, Joe Brinton's Rubies were shown the way by T Brinton, A Johnston and the man himself, by an impressive score of 30-17 at El Rancho.

EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB On Monday the Raiders were at home to Quesada Rubies, although the Raiders didn’t take a point a couple of the matches were very close. It will always be easier for larger clubs to raise 4 good trips in these restrictive times, but remember it is all about good company and enjoying our bowls.

David Baker’s efforts were much appreciated in manning the bar today.

Meanwhile the Pintos were again at San Luis playing the Klingons and although our trip was on the same rink with the same opponents, I struggled to master the rink. But it happens, we all struggle sometimes to make our bodies behave as our brains wish, but I enjoyed the company as I would hope we all did. We came away with one rink, from a match away from home against strong opponents.

On Tuesday the Mustangs played the postponed match from last Friday away to Greenland’s Oaks, the Mustangs came away with a rink and a near run, a good effort away from home.

Wednesday’s rescheduled Country Bowls match for the Broncos, from Friday the 22nd was postponed again due to the waterlogged mat.

The Mustangs were at home on Friday, playing host to Quesada Swallows.

The mat was wet to start with and was very slow to dry, never quite achieving it. But it was a close-run match with both teams taking two rinks and sharing the overall shots equally, a worthy draw.

Meanwhile the Broncos were playing the Swifts at Quesada and had a tight match, going into the last end level on 3 rinks. Despite their excellent efforts they came away without a point, but as I have said many times ‘The result isn’t always an indicator of how you have played, particularly away from home’. SAN MIGUEL BOWLS CLUB On Monday San Miguel had two matches at home, and one away.

At home in the morning San Miguel Dalmations played La Siesta Pioneers winning 8 - 2, 79 shots to 57. The best winning triple were Ann Young, Frank Scotthern and Barbara Scotthern, 26 shots to 12.

Also on Monday morning San Miguel Alsations were away to Greenlands Maples losing 4 - 6, 68 shots to 82, the best winning triple were Pat McEwan, Mike Bayfield and Mike Douglas 24 shots to 12.

On Monday afternoon San Miguel Beagles were home to Greenlands Sycamores, winning 8 - 2, 80 shots to 53. Best winning triple were Anita Brown, Lynn Greenland and Fred Willshire, 27 shots to 12.

On Thursday San Miguel Bulldogs played a re-arranged game against Country Bowls Geckos losing 4 -6, 73 shots to 75, The two winning triples were Lynn Greenland, Gail Willshire and Fred Willshire 20 shots to 14 and Anita Brown, Mary Whitelock and Ron Nairey 24 shots to 18.

On Friday morning San Miguel Bulldogs were home to Vistabella Lanzadores where they ‘had a bad day at the office’ losing 10 - 0 78 shots to 51.

On Friday afternoon San Miguel Boxers were away to Vistabella Picadors winning 7 - 3, 74 shots to 64. The best winning triple were Frank Scotthern, Barbara Scotthern and Bob Donnelly 24 shots to 11.

A reminder that the Wasps sessions take place Wednesdays 1.30pm for 2.00pm - 5 for an afternoon’s bowling with shoes and bowls available to borrow. Due to the popularity of the Wasps, first time bowlers are asked to attend an initial coaching session on Tuesday afternoons, starting at 1.45pm.

They started Sat 23rd October with 4 men's singles on a unknown carpet after Friday's tremendous drenching. The results being Mike Stone 21 – Alex Maurice 8, Trevor Stemp 21 – Trevor Hancock 9. We had 2 no shows so Don Fowkes and David Southwell go through by default.

Monday 25th and guess who we played against? The Emerald Isle, the Explorers played the Moonrakers at home and the Pathfinders travelled to the Isle to play against the Neptunes. At home we had a resounding win 8 points to 2, and I feel I must mention the trip of Margaret Maclaughlin, Mike Smith and Peter Parsons who won 28-2 helping us to 79 shots for and 46 against. At the Isle we won 6 – 4 winning the overall shots 62 – 60, thanks mainly to our top winning trip of Trevor Stemp, Garth Slater and Alex Maurice who won 25 – 6, an outstanding result away from home. Well done all.

Barclays Properties league, and those Lambs are still the team in form, this week beating the Seals 7 – 1. The other big winners this week were the Pandas who climbed over the Dolphins with a 8 – 0 victory and the Tigers who roared off the bottom with a 6 – 2 win over the Collies.

Friday – and surprise, surprise the Emerald Isle were not involved but Greenlands are twice. The re-schedules of Seaguls v Greenlands Cedars resulted in a very disappointing 1 v 9 loss, and Friday's game of Sharks v Greenlands Oaks had another disappointing result losing 2 – 8.

Twelve teams of three were split into two groups and each team played three games over the two days. Points were scored for every end won and for winning the overall game. Before the competition commenced we held a Spider which was won

After the competition we enjoyed lunch at the Belfry which as usual was enjoyed by all. Cindy presented the winners with their prizes and the Chairman Chris Harding thanked Cindy the Belfry, and the ladies who had organised the cake stall and all who had took part.

CHICKEN RUN This months chicken run was well supported with thirty two members taking part. The chickens were won by Julia Hamilton and Graham Smythe the eggs were won by Yvonne and Dave Yarrow.

Thank you to Bill Winterburn who donated the chickens and Julia and Ian Hamilton who donated the eggs. Lynne Armitage won the football card with Wolves.

LADIES AFTERNOON TEA As the last ladies afternoon tea was so successful it was decided to organise another one. Once again it was very enjoyable the drinks flowed and a good time was had by all who attended. A big thank you to Sharan, Paul and Ruth and of course the ladies of the Social Committee.

DAVE ROBERTS Members were delighted to welcome Chris and Dave Roberts back to the Club in early October, after two years absence.

Dave has been fighting illness in the U.K. for last two years and is now winning his battle.

Dave managed to bowl for the first time since his illness. With the help of playing partners he managed twelve ends and really enjoyed being back on the rink again.

We hope to see Chris and Dave back in Spain in November.

Dennis Taylor played Mijas Golf Club with son Cameron and Eamon Coghlan.

Upon retirement, he continued to race and became the first man over 40 years old to run a sub-fourminute mile.

1985 World Snooker Champion Dennis Taylor, 72, played Mijas Golf Club with son Cameron and three times Olympic Champion and World Champion runner Eamon Coghlan, 68.

In May 2011, Coghlan was appointed as a Senator by the Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Taylor, who defeated Steve Davis 18-17 at The Crucible to lift the World Snooker title, took up commentary after retirement.

He and his wife, Yvonne, have four children, and youngest son, John, is one of Ireland's leading athletes who won a team gold medal in the European Cross-Country Championships in Portugal in 2010.

His son Damien is a professional golf coach.

Coghlan had a successful amateur running career in Ireland, leading to a scholarship in the United States, where he won four NCAA titles in track running; running a sub-four-minute mile to set an Irish record, aged 22.

Coghlan who set the European record over the distance is nicknamed, 'The Chairman of the Boards', on the back of his success on the US indoor circuit.

International success for Torrevieja Gymnasts The Guimagym International Tournament held in the Portuguese city of Guimaraes (Porto) saw gold medal success for Torrevieja gymnast Lucia Leshan Canas, who managed to win the gold in the rim apparatus, a silver in maces, and a ribbon in the general classification of the Junior category.

She was accompanied by her coach Jennifer Colino in her capacity of coach for the Federation Gymnastics Team of the Valencian Community.

LO MARABU GOLF SOCIETY

This International Tournament, saw high-level gymnasts from both clubs and national teams participating as representatives of their country.

In the Regional and Provincial Championships held in Onteniente, Torrevieja’s Valeria Vorontsova, finished as Provincial Champion and Autonomous Runner-up in the juvenile category, gaining automatic entry to the Championship of Spain to be held from November 24 to 28 in Valladolid.

ALFIE’S GOLF SOCIETY El Valle- Thursday, 28th October 2021 23 members and guests from Alfie's GS travelled to El Valle GC for the October meeting and to compete for the Memorial Cup. Our Memorial Cup was introduced a few years ago to remind us of members who have now past.

It was also the day we handed over our annual donation to the Royal British legion for the Poppy Appeal, so a big thank you to everyone involved with Alfies GS. The weather was perfect. The course, although generally in good condition, there was evidence that it had been over-played, leaving the greens patchy and uneven at times.

Presentation to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2021 As these travel restriction rules have been eased over the late summer month’s we have seen a large influx of tourist golfers filling the golf courses and giving some hope for a more normal future for the golf industry in this part of Spain.

September and October have been particularly busy and for anyone looking for a game of golf it has become a case of finding a course that has any tee time availability rather that the golfer specifying where they want to play.

Looking longer terms what does the future hold for our golf industry and as golfers what can we expect from the golf courses?

For sure we have seen a mini revival over the last few month’s but will this be sustainable into next year?

For this month’s meeting the Lo Marabu Golf Society and a group of 35 players visited the established course at Vistabella taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

This was our Captains Day and Rod Allen provided a bottle of wine for every player.

This was also our British Legion Day. The weather was beautiful after a chilly start and there were some excellent scores on the day.
