COMPENSATION FOR CALA MOSCA, 213 MILLION EURO

he developer, and owner of the designated building plots at Cala Mosca, the very last kilometre of green space on the Orihuela Costa, has warned that there will be a “cascade of compensation claims” if the developable land is declassified when it is debated in the Valencian Parliament in Tuesday.

The company has sent a letter to all the members of the Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport Commission of Las Cortes, who will vote on the motion, urging them to rule against the proposal, warning the deputies that it has the physical and legal rights of this urban development and, if the land classification is changed, it will ask for loss of profits that it estimates at 213,473,600 euros, to

which "compensation for other damages” should also be added.

In calculating this loss of earnings, Playa Salvaje has made an impact assessment of 800 euros per square metre of capital loss for which it would seek compensation, in addition to the project fees and expenses, and the urbanization works it has already carried out.

The letter, signed by the promoter Esteban Gomendio, states that they have already carried out 70% of the urbanization works, including construction of the access roundabout to the area and the internal road network, although all are currently closed because of the presence of varieties of threatened and protected flora and fauna that has since been detected in the sector.

The deputy spokesperson of the Unides Podem-Esquerra Unida coalition, Estefanía Blanes, has asked the different political groups to support the motion and not to give in to the "pressure" of the Cala Mosca urban development company.

"We have presented this proposal because we believe that we have the obligation and the duty to protect this natural space and the Cortes must now also support it politically." She denounces the "pressure from real estate interests" that the deputies have been subjected to so that this motion is not approved. Blanes said that the company's letter "is not going to stop us and we are sure that the rest of the political groups are not going to be influenced either and are going to support us."

On the occasion of the International Soil Conservation Day, last week, the spokesperson for AVOCA (La aso-

ciación de vecinos CABO ROIG Y LOMAS), Tomás Moreno, wrote an opinion article for the news website vegabajadigita.com, in which he called Cala Mosca “a true lung for our area, where protected species of flora and fauna live, and which it is essential to conserve.”

He was quite clear in his article that the 2,200 homes that are planned to be built in Cala Mosca, with their more than 5,000 potential new residents, are going to seriously affect the quality of life of the people who already live in Orihuela Costa.

He states that there is already a serious inadequacy in the services that the area has suffered for many years. There are deficiencies in the essential services of

PSOE DENOUNCES FURTHER EMERGENCY CENTRE DEL AY Gracia has revealed that the Orihuela City Council has accepted a modification to the project that increases the cost of construction by 130,220 euros The Orihuela PSOE have denounced the increased cost and construction delay of the new Orihuela Costa Emergency Centre.

According to the socialist spokesperson, Carolina Gracia, the construction of the centre will now cost 130,000 euros more than originally agreed, after the City Council accepted an amendment to the project by the developers, DOALCO. "It is curious that this amendment has been agreed by the Contracts Department just one month before the planned end of the works, when the reason dates back to the original construction carried out by the company in October 2020”, Gracia said.

Gracia said that the Emergency Centre is one of the most demanded projects on the coast. In 2010, three million Euro was assigned to the project which was suspended when the original company could not fulfil the contract. It was not until 2016 with a new government, and thanks to the General Directorate of Emergencies, that the remaining credit was unlocked, transferring more than 2 million to the City Council so that it could re-tender the works.

second anti Muslim attack was carried out last week in the Murcia town of Cabezo de Torres when a mosque was vandalised in the latest anti-Muslim attack on Wednesday

night.

Only last month a Moroccan man was brutally murdered in the southeastern Spanish region.

The mosque was only opened in 2018, but in the attack last Wednesday it was covered in spray-paint with the phrases "no to Islam," "stop the invasion" and "Spain's sovereignty cannot be negotiated."

The vandals also left a pig's head outside the mosque with a knife jutting from the skull.

In an area of Murcia that is the home to one of Spain’s largest Muslim populations this is the latest in a long series of xenophobic attacks on the immigrant population.

In June a Moroccan immigrant, Younes Bilal, was shot dead at point blank range while he was sitting, drinking coffee with friends.

The attacker, a Spanish veteran, shot Bilal after berating him and other people at the cafe with racist insults.

A week earlier a Moroccan employee at a local company was also attacked, allegedly by a co worker, who was subsequenty fired for the assault.

The incident was allegedly caused when a boss told the Spanish co worker "This Moor is a better worker than you," referring to Koutaibi.

The remark so angered the man that he began beating Koutaibi with an iron bar, fracturing his skull, resulting in him going into a coma. His family insists it was a racist attack as he remains in critical condition.

There have also been a number of other racist attacks on immigrants and buildings of worship in the area while Spain's central government continues to remain mostly silent on the continued assaults.

Manchester brothers arrested in Torrevieja for million pound heist

T

he National Police have arrested two brothers in Torrevieja who are wanted by the British authorities for the operation of a network of drug traffickers.

The older of the two brothers was also wanted over his alleged involvement in a violent theft of more than £1m.

Both were allegedly responsible for the transport, distribution and payment of the drugs while the younger of the two is suspected of the violent theft of cocaine from other criminal organisations.

At the time of the arrest, as their car was surrounded by National Police, the two fugitives tried to flee with two other people ramming their car into a police vehicle. The four men were eventually overpowered and detained despite putting up great resistance.

Police have been looking for the two brothers for almost a year. In August 2020, the National Police were alerted by the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the possible presence in Spain of the two brothers who ran a major criminal organization dedicated to large-scale cocaine and cannabis trafficking.

The National Police focused their investigation on the Costa Blanca and last December narrowed the search to Orihuela Costa, where it was thought that they could be hidden among the large British community.

Once their home was located, the agents established a surveillance operation, finally arresting them as they drove through Torrevieja.

The pair now face extradition back to the UK.

Bonnie Tyler's Torrevieja gig suspended due to COVID-19

By Andrew Atkinson Bonnie Tyler's long awaited appearance in Torrevieja after two years of negotiations has been suspended due to COVID-19.

A spokesperson from the Official Communication Office in Spain representing the artist said: "The concert scheduled for July 17 at the Parque Antonio Soria has been suspended due to the current situation on Covid19 regulations and the restrictions imposed by the British Government on travellers to Spain.

"We continue with the pertinent negotiations with the Torrevieja City Council Department of Culture, to give the opportunity to celebrate the Bonnie Tyler concert for 2022."

Tyler, 70, born Gaynor Hopkins, with her distinctive husky voice is best known for

her 1978 single 'It's A Heartache' which reached number four on the UK Singles Chart, and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100.

She is married to property developer and 1972 Olympic judo competitor Robert Sullivan with the couple spending much of the year in their five-bedroom home in Albufeira in the Algarve.

Motoring death on N332 in Pilar de la Horadada A 41-year-old woman died on Tuesday in a traffic accident on the N-332 where it passes through Lo Monte, in Pilar de la Horadada.

The driver of the vehicle, apparently the brother of the victim, was detained by the Civil Guard on suspicion that he was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs after refusing to take a breathalyser or drug test at the scene.

The accident took place at around 10:30 p.m. with the emergency report stating that a woman was unconscious as a result of the impact. The CICU mobilized a SAMU unit, whose medical team could only confirm the death of the 41-year-old woman.

Sources stated that the vehicle, the only one involved in the accident, was travelling far too quickly as the driver lost control and it hit the roundabout extremely violently.

However, the first visit to Torrevieja by the schooner since its restoration by the Nao Victoria Foundation, has created unprecedented interest, with more than 3,000 Torrevieja residents and tourists visiting the boat last week, both on deck and down below, in just the five days that it has been harboured in the port.

Cameras and mobiles were aplenty with many families taking the opportunity to record images that they will long remember on board this iconic vessel.

The first destination for the ship is a return to Huelva, from where it will begin an Atlantic crossing that will take it to La Coruña, before a number of different French ports and then on to Nantes, where it will meet the Andalusian Galleon.

The two ships will them sail together across the north of Europe to their destination in Germany, where they will be present from August 9 to 12 at the Bremerhaven Maritime Festival along with many other large and historic ships from around the world.

Councillor thanks Volunteers at Mass Vaccination Centre Torrevieja’s councillor for Ong's and Volunteering, Concha Sala, has said how grateful she is to more than 30 volunteers who have been working at the city’s mass vaccination centre, carrying out reception duties, taking temperatures, hand disinfection and providing information.

She underlined the exemplary work that is being done by members of many different associations, whose shifts are being coordinated by the Department of NGOs and Volunteering in support of the departments of Health and Emergencies.

This will be the very first occasion that the Torrevieja ship will participate in a international maritime festival.

Every port visited will be significant for the city of Torrevieja,

since the Pascual Flores will bear the name of Torrevieja as a tourist city which, to the delight of the general public, it will return to for it’s second visit in October.

REFUSE TRUCK DEATH An unnamed male aged 65 was run over and killed by a Waste Collection vehicle in Los Náufragos in Torrevieja after falling into the the road along Desiderio Rodríguez Avenue.

Emergency services, including two ambulances, local police and Civil Guard attended the scene.

The area was cordoned off following the incident. Reports suggest the incident occurred after the man lost his balance and fell into the road as the waste vehicle was passing.

The body was transferred to the forensic Anatomical Institute to determine the cause of death.

Arrests in Guardamar after counterfeit goods raid Six people were arrested by the Guardia Civil during a routine inspection of counterfeit goods at a flea market in Guardamar.

They are four men of Senegalese nationality between 37 and 60 years old, a 58-year-old man of Moroccan nationality, and a 48year-old man of Colombian nationality.

The arrested have been charged for illegally selling counterfeit clothing and footwear.

The 3,433 articles of clothing, and other effects related to the illegal activity that were seized, are at in the possession of the Torrevieja Court.

In total, more than thirty people are helping out from groups such as Civil Protection Volunteers, pioneros en este servicio, Asila, Alimentos Solidarios, Donaciones Torrevieja and la Hospitalidad de Lourdes.

Dodging Delta Let us start by stating the obvious.

Nobody is against ‘opening up the country.’ Where there is serious disagreement is about when and how we can achieve this ‘liberation.’

Won’t it be great when all restrictions are lifted. The freedom to book a flight, go to matches, concerts, have a meal in a restaurant, slide into a regular seat in church, meet the lads in Bartley’s and hug a friend.

But hang on a minute, folks. Hang on for a couple of months more and we will be out of this. I, like most of my generation, am pretty well ‘alright Jack’ with my double vaccine – but there are an awful lot of citizens still not out of the wood.

Once again, we proclaim that nobody wants to be the last man shot in the war. I fear Covid more than I covet the pleasures of above.

Of course I understand the frustration of everyone who is totally fed up with Covid Restrictions. But the government isn’t the enemy here: NPHET isn’t the enemy either: Covid is the enemy – and the rest of us should all be on the same side.

There is too much wild talk and ‘alternative facts’ being kicked about in recent days. Reckless ‘solutions’ being bandied around amid bitter criticism for those in authority who are trying to save lives.

Yes, the government has made mistakes and NPHET is hardly infallible, but the current level of vitriol is wide

Last October there was a chorus of cries to ‘give us a Christmas’. Such was the demand that the government caved in and opened up the country in December. People died as a result and those who were clamouring loudest for the opening up, soon became the most vocal critics of our leaders for doing so.

Pressure from these usual suspects who are against everything, cannot be allowed to discredit medical science again. When they cannot come up with anything valid to counter Dr Holohan’s recommendations, they blandly state that his findings should be “reviewed”!

Doctor Fauci had to deal with the same blunderbuss style attack from Trump and his ilk in America.

There is also a faction of cheerleaders against NPHET because it is an ‘unelected body.’ If I got a heart attack on the road and woke up to somebody giving me resuscitation, I wouldn’t be asking by what authority he was saving my life!

It is an indisputable fact that restauranteurs and publicans have carried more than their share of the lockdown burden. Other businesses such as those supplying building materials have done better than ever before. It isn’t fair and it is to be hoped that those struggling businesses will get a ‘bounce’ to make up for their losses later in the year.

BUT … none of it is worth one human life and if we are ‘under siege’ – as I read in one newspaper; it isn’t such a bad siege. Everybody has enough to eat. There are no snipers watching to blow your head off if you go outside.

Once your seedlings have formed 2-3 pairs of leaves, pinch out the growing tips which will help to produce bushier plants with more flowers.

Slugs and snails are a threat when the seedlings are young and tender.

Walking back to happiness

Orihuela City to have a new dog agility park Orihuela will soon have a new dog agility park. The project has been allocated the amount of 17,844.13 euros should be completed within a period of two months.

The Department of Infrastructure, Services and Maintenance plans to begin the construction of an agility park in the municipal green area located in the east of he city on Avenida Doctor Gómez Pardo Ródenas to fulfil the demand of the residents who require a space in which their dogs can play and run loose.

“For this reason, a closed enclosure will be created in which the dogs can be loose, controlled and without danger of escaping, mainly ensuring that the pets have enough land to run and play with the agility modules,” said Councilor Ángel Noguera.

The project includes the installation of perimeter fencing, two manual opening and closing doors, informational posters, benches, waste bins, a fountain adapted for pets and agility modules.

The Councillor for Infrastructures pointed out that, “for the proper enjoyment of the facility, users must comply at all times with what is established in the ordinance of possession and protection of animals, such as always picking up excrement, supervising the animal, and be muzzling and leashing potentially dangerous dogs.”

Good health is all about illness. We want to enjoy one and keep a wary eye on the other.

Sounds easy enough, doesn't it? (Does it? -Where have you been living lately, in some sort of bubble?)

The Louvre in Paris is the longest building in Europe, and would stretch farther than three Eiffel Towers laid end to end, always supposing there were three Eiffel Towers and they had all fallen down neatly. I once set out to walk its 3-mile perimeter, goodness knows why, my feet were younger then, I suppose.

This unusual preamble was prompted by the realisation that during a time of maximum danger to public health, we are almost being asked to walk it off. It easily equals The Four Tops' eerie prognostication in Just Walk Away, Renée: "The empty sidewalks on each block..." A haunting evocation of the future, half of which is buried in the past.

I'm beginning to sound like one of those retired colonels who write splenetic letters to newspaper editors, but I just missed National Service conscription, which at least would have taught me to walk in formation.

Although we're more likely to have to swerve now and then when we walk outside these days. ("About--- turn!")

As my life stretches out behind me, I find myself wishing I had spent less of it on my feet and more of it in my armchair. The French philosopher Pascal stated that "all of humanity's problems stem from man's inability to sit quietly in a room alone," and I per-

sonally would find that a piece of cake, which I would also enjoy.

I ought to have strolled into the Louvre that day in 1966 rather than trying to march around it, and then I could have walked indoors, looking at the paintings and stopping every so often to draw breath, not literally of course. A dawdle like that would have been a doddle. Although my Cuban heels might have made the Mona Lisa frown.

The plastic bags will then be recycled to ensure that they do not go into landfill.

Store director, Lisa James, explains: ‘Plastic bags are a big problem for our environment as they can end up in landfill and break down to small, toxic particles, or in our oceans, where they are responsible for killing an estimated 100,000 marine animals each year.

Two large surveys carried out in Germany studied its effect on 1542 women suffering from PMS over twenty-three weeks. In 90% of cases symptoms such as headache, sore breasts, mood swings, anxiety and restlessness were completely relieved. Improvement usually began within three to four weeks of starting treatment. (Don't take it, though, if you're on the contraceptive pill, HRT or if you're taking prescription drugs.)

In traditional Chinese medicine, dong quai or Chinese angelica is prescribed for almost every female complaint in the book, from menstrual cramps, irregularity and weakness through to menopausal problems.

TIME OF THE MONTH Periods don't have to be a pain.

It's a warming, comforting herb, specially useful when you're feeling low and fragile. It's often combined with cramp bark - the name is self-explanatory.

Enlist some herbal allies to help end those monthly miseries.

In a normal healthy woman, eating a good diet, periods should be no big deal. But if the bleed is excessive or prolonged, if it happens in between periods or if there's unusual pain in the pelvic area then or after sex, get yourself checked out by your doctor. If your GP finds nothing you should worry about, try some appropriate herbal help.

If there's one herb that really is specially for women, it has to be Vitex agnus castus or chasteberry, usually known just as vitex.

Men have been warned off it for centuries by its reputation for suppressing their sexual urges, leaving women free to exploit its extraordinary hormone-regulating powers.

Hormones out of sync are responsible for a lot of the grief in periods, and legions of modem women have leamed to be thankful for vitex.

In traditional Chinese medicine, dong quai or Chinese angelica is prescribed for almost every female complaint US herbalist Michael Tierra suggests combining equal parts of angelica, cramp bark and chamomile, plus a little grated fresh ginger root, for a calming and warming tonic for such times.

Put 25g of this mix into a pan with 600ml cold water; bring it to the boil and simmer for fifteen minutes, then strain and drink hot.

Dong quai should be discontinued a week before your period starts, as it may stimulate bleeding. And don't use if you are on blood-thinning drugs.

Contraceptive pills, incidentally, deplete many essential nutrients in women taking them - including zinc, magnesium, vitamins C and E and vitamin B6. Try to make up these deficiencies in your diet: eat more nuts, seeds, wholegrains, green vegetables and take a good vitamin and mineral supplement as extra insurance. If you feel your diet is inadequate, take one of the special supplements aimed at

The EFAs - essential fatty acids - are especially important. They are found in oily fish, and one EFA in particular, gamma-linolenic acid, or GLA, is supplied by only three to four plants, among them the lovely evening primrose, whose seeds are rich in the stuff.

This EFA helps regulate hormone balance in the body, and controls the production of certain compounds called prostaglandins which may be responsible for a whole slew of PMS symptoms including mood swings, depression and - in particular - the extreme breast tenderness that some women experience.

So striking is the relief it can give for this symptom that doctors in the UK are allowed to prescribe it to sufferers. Look for a good brand (the market is awash with cheap ones) and take 500mg once or twice a day.

Here s an idea for you ..........

When cramps are so bad that you can hardly drag yourself through the day, try something soothing. US herbalist Rosemary Gladstar suggests a hot ginger poultice. 'Make a pot of strong ginger tea by grating fresh ginger and adding it to cold water. Bring it to a low boil and simmer (with the lid tightly on) for ten to fifteen minutes. Allow it to cool just slightly. Dip a clean cotton cloth in the tea and wring out any excess liquid. Put a dry towel over the pelvic area and then place the hot poultice over it. Cover it with a thick towel, leave it on till it begins to cool, and repeat till the pain is eased.' Drink a cup of warm ginger tea sweetened with a little honey; at the same time add rosemary. That'll help ease the cramps, too.

Finally, plants that can influence human hormonal states are powerful medicine. If possible consult a herbal practitioner who can fine-tune a herbal prescription to your specific case.

PONY RESCUE IN SOARING HEAT

Laughing Leprechaun Quingo Club donation to RBL This is the 28th equine they have rescued from the town and there is simply nowhere else for these animals to go s we all try and stay out of the sun as the heat wave sweeps across the province, bare a thought for the team at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, who are battling in intense temperatures to keep their equine residents cool and calm.

With the thermometer rising, the Rescue Centre this week received another call from the authorities in Almoradi who had found a pony abandoned, tied up to a tree and left without food or water.

Sue also thanks the local police in Almoradi who were concerned about the welfare of the pony and took her to the police station, cooled her down and gave her water until we could go and get her.

Sue Weeding, founder of Easy Horse Care, said: “Her condition is heartbreaking. She is skin and bones and shows signs of laminitis, a hoof disease caused by inappropriate feed.”

This is the 28th equine they have rescued from the town and there is simply nowhere else for these animals to go. Yet, despite the cooperation and support of the local authorities, funding is still lacking and they rely on the generosity of fundraisers, donations and money coming in from their charity shops.

After getting her back to the Rescue Centre in Rojales their equine vet Dorothea examined their newest arrival.

She is completely blind in one eye, thought to be from some sort of blow or injury, and her other eye has just 60% vision.

Sue added: “She is a dear little thing but is so skeletal and she is probably in foal. To think that

The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal was the chosen charity of Cabo Roig’s Laughing Leprechaun Quingo club for the month of June, raising 210 euro which will be used to support military veterans and their families here in Spain.

The club, organised by Nikki Tate, meets every Tuesday between 2 and 4 pm, where they have a bit of fun with an afternoon quiz and bingo mix, while raising much needed funding for a multitude of individuals and organisations.

During the month of May, baby Cody Grennan was the recipient, as in October he will face an operation involving the full reconstruction of part of his trachea under the larynx, while during the month of July, the SAT animal rescue charity will benefit from monies raised by the Quingo Club.

ANDREW ATKINSON talks to Los Altos, Orihuela based Frank Stanhope, about his memories as a Linotype maintenance engineer at the Financial Times in Fleet Street in Part 2 of a Leader Exclusive.

The paper grew in size, readership and international coverage, becoming a global newspaper, printed in 22 locations with five international editions to serve the UK, continental Europe, the U.S., Asia and the Middle East.

"After working at the Liverpool Echo I joined a company in Beckenham, Kent, to help build and maintain the Russian equivalent of a Linotype.

In 1998 the FT became the first UKbased newspaper to sell more copies internationally, than within the UK.

"I went to Algeria to install a machine.

One morning going to the press I passed a Synagogue - with Army soldiers outside.

"I never did find out what was happening, until I returned to the UK. It was 1972, the year Israeli athletes were killed at the Olympics," recalled Frank.

"I later joined an American Printing company Wolf Composition, setting up in Watford, mainly printing books.

"They flew over seven machines fully built - a section of the first floor had to be removed - rig-up block and tackle and winch them up. That was some job!

"It was during the time a three day working week came into play. We had to install a generator to work a full week - and it was my job to turn it on, the days we had no power," said Frank.

He then found himself in Fleet Street:

"It wasn't planned, but I went from one good job to another, every couple of years.

"In Fleet Street I was working alongside colleagues publishing the Sunday Times and The Guardian, aged 34, a time I took up playing golf.

"After a few years The Guardian moved premises and of the 16 engineers covering the two papers, seven went to work for The Guardian.

"We stripped a machine down to be put in the London Museum. On the front of the machine all the engineers and operators names who had worked on the machine were on it.

Our President, Scott Malden, reminded us of some of the club’s founder members

Last week we had the excitement (?) of our Monday League finals.

To cope with the heat better, this week the organised sessions have moved to evenings (Monday, Wednesday & Fridays 5:30 for 6:00 p.m.). Consequently on Wednesday evening some of the players finished their game and then stayed on at Oasis, potentially for tapas or BBQ, and then to watch the England v Denmark football match on the big outside screen. (Obviously not as exciting as the bowling!!!).

On Friday 2nd Dee Hoey (Soc. Sec) organised a get together to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of San Luis. Over an excellent meal it was good to meet up with friends we hadn’t necessarily seen for quite a few months and look forward to perhaps more “normal” bowling from October.

Our President, Scott Malden, gave a good speech reminding us of some of the club’s founder members, who are no longer with us, and the start up of San Luis BC from a tennis court!

We enjoyed reminiscing about how San Luis has developed over the years; winning Southern Leagues, SABA/South Alicante Leagues, Winter Leagues (+being the only club to enter 2 Winter League teams) and we joined together in a toast to the future of San Luis Bowls Club.

aving endured two seasons of Covid 19 disruption, the Thursday darts committee are planning to resume formalities for a potential new '21 / 22 season.

Subject to government restrictions, possibly to be introduced in the coming 6 weeks or so, an August AGM is being scheduled, with an anticipated September start date.

The number of teams each club plans to enter has to be notified to LLB by mid August, so people will have to make decisions soon about where they intend to bowl for the winter season.

If players are prepared to commit themselves to San Luis B.C by 1st August, Gareth has agreed that for this year membership will be for 13 months, from 1st August 2021.

Calpe Bowls Club in new home

Since it was first established, Calpe Bowls Club has been situated close to the Playa in Calpe on the Costa Blanca North coastal region of Spain.

It still has the wonderful backdrop of the Peñon de Ifach, known as Calpe Rock but the club has now re-located to be part of the Calpe Tennis Club (Club de Tenis Calpe) complex where two new bowling greens have been completed.

The club now has 8 generous rinks all newly laid by Dales Sports. The new complex has much improved facilities including a Restaurant and Bar and many other sports to choose from. There is a Gym, Tennis and Paddel courts, childrens Play Area and even a Pool!

We remain, as always, a very friendly bowls club with an active membership of around thirty five people.

Our members meet three times a week for a 'roll-up' and also play in the Costa Blanca Northern League, as well as inter club cup matches.

Along with most, clubs we are always open to new bowlers, whether experienced or beginners a warm welcome awaits them. Coaching and everything to get you started is provided.

The club also has its own members cup competitions which are run, along with the league and cup competitions during the 'bowls season' from October through to the end of March.

Carp R Us Mini Series compromised by Blue Crab Carp-R-Us fished the second round of its mini-series on the Rio Segura downstream of the CV91 road bridge.

Like many other places on the Segura, without constant work the pegs quickly become overgrown but the fishing on the stretch often makes it worthwhile.

The other problem with this stretch is the varying water levels, between the Wednesday when the venue was checked and the day of the match the water dropped a foot. Sadly, one other thing that may also be a problem, is that several the dreaded Blue Crabs were caught, five by one angler.

We thought these had disappeared from the river, but today they were back with a vengeance.

The match itself was won by Steve Fell with 8.09kg from peg 6 caught using pole and bread tight to the far bank.

Second in the next-door peg was Willie Moons who had 4.04kg using his usual feeder and pellet tactics.

Covid and Brexit matters have influenced many teams / individuals, Brexit, particularly affecting non residents, now facing 90 day compliance about turns, no good for respective captains expecting a full complement of players over a 7 month season.

The result has seen several teams reluctantly withdrawing, leaving a number of players without a Thursday side. Anyone finding themselves in this position should contact Simone de Lacy, for reassignment, where possible to other teams etc.

Torrevieja’s Female Cadete 3rd in Nationals The female cadet team of the Torrevieja Tennis Club took third place in the Spanish Championships by defeating the Valencia Tennis Club by 2-0, in the 9th edition of the MAPFRE Spanish Cadet Team Tennis Championship "Yellow last month at the Atlètic Terrassa Hockey Club, in the province of Barcelona.

During a strong start the Torrevieja Tennis Club beat the Covadonga de Gijón Club 2-0 and the Tarragona Tennis Club in the quarterfinals by 2-0; However, in a semi final tie that lasted almost 8 hours, they drew the singles but fell to defeat in a decisive doubles rubber against Club Atlético Montemar 2-1.

Congratulations to the players Candela Aparisi, Blanca Pico, Carla Verdú and their captain David Pérez Lalanda for their excellent attitude and generous effort.

In other news the Junior team of the Torrevieja Tennis Club will travel to the Real Zaragoza Tennis Club to play the IV Spanish team championship that will be held from this week, and the champion of the Valencian Under 14’s, will debut in the Infantil championship of Spain that is also held this week at the Montemar Atletico Club.

Lo Crispin Golf Society Following a number of late cancellations, 25 members (including 1 playing for handicap) and 4 guests 'teed it up' on 7th. July to compete for our Summer Cup.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 5.7.21 With our numbers deleted for various reasons (more in a minute) just 17 players took part in Monday’s ‘32-1 Dusty Bin’. With a score of 89 points our winners were Olga Douglas, Nigel Price, Ian Moir and Mike Chapman.

It was some relief that it was not as hot as the previous couple of days. The course was generally in good condition and the greens were also generally good and quick.

The majority of scores were quite good, considering the heat.

A quick ‘get well soon’ goes out to one of our members, Pete (Pedro) Dunn, who, whilst trying to rescue a distressed cat in his neighbour’s garden managed to fall off the top of the dividing wall! Nothing broken but plenty of bruises.

What a fantastic turnout for our July championship. We had 85 players all geared and ready for the off with a 9am shot gun start. Again the competitions committee of Camillus, Philip and Terry were well prepared and players simply had to turn up, follow the instructions and walk to their allocated tee.

Jean in the pro-shop as ever generated our results efficiently and in a very timely manner.

By Andrew Atkinson Leader Exclusive Santiago Lopez took the 2021 National Kick Boxing title in Madrid - fulfilling a lifetime ambition and dream.

"My lifetime ambition and dream was to train a Champion - or be a Champion," Santiago told The Leader.

In 2013 Vivienne Shepherd, owner of Quesada Fitness Gym, asked Santiago what his dreams were.

During the last eight years he has coached numerous Provincial and National Champions, in all age groups and categories of Kick Boxing and Boxing.

July 2021 was his first personal opportunity to compete in the Seniors over 94 Kg in Azuqueca de Henares Madrid - coming home as National Champion.

San Javier born Marta Penalver jetted-off to Palma from Italy to attend her II Futsal Clinic, in La Palma, before returning home to Murcia for a short summer break.

It is now official, the Royal Spanish Athletics Federation has just made public the Spanish team that will take part in the next Olympic Games in Tokyo, and among those selected is the athlete from Torrevieja, Luis Manuel Corchete Martínez, who will represent Spain in the 50km race on 6 August.

Corchete has spent a lifetime dedicated to athletics, specifically to walking.

Born in Torrevieja, he began his career at the age of seven at the municipal athletics school and later at the Torrevieja Athletics Club.

Now, at 37 years of age, he has achieved Olympic qualification and is proud to be taking Torrevieja across the world to Japan.
