rihuela has said that it hopes to build a 2nd medical centre on the coast if their proposal is rejected by the Ministry of Health.

The City Council says that it is currently finalising their search for a suitable municipal plot of land for its construction which is absolutely necessary in order to better serve the coast and to reduce the pressure that the current facility is under. The councillor for health, JosĂŠ Galiano, has said that the council will earmark 300,000 euro from the municipal budget.

Once the plot is earmarked the intention of the Council is to offer it up to the Ministry of Health to build a second centre.

However, councillor Galiano, says he is not confident that the offer will be accepted after the previous refusal of the Ministry of Health to construct a second health centre which they said was based on the fact that the area does not meet the population requirement in that a sufficient number of SIP cards are not registered. The current criteria is that about 20,000 people need to be registered for a health centre, so with just over 30,000 residents the Orihuela Costa already has one centre but not the sufficient number for a second.

If the Ministry does refuse the offer the Councilor for Health, says that he has a "plan b" which will see the construction of a satellite medical office that will free some of the burden from the current clinic.

He said that it will be located on the land that the City Council is currently hoping to identify, and that it would be some way from the current Aguamarina health center so as to redistribute the work to two areas so as to reduce the travel times of the users and the doctors who will be working from the new clinic.

For this, the councillor plans to reserve around 300,000 euros in the 2020 budgets (not yet

approved) to ensure that the work of the medical office can be undertaken should the Ministry not take up the offer.

Galiano is aware of the overload that the Aguamarina health centre has been experiencing since 2005 as he both works there as a nurse and is also a resident of the Orihuela Costa.

"Orihuela Costa is very large municipality and it is a largely tourist area, with many foreign residents who come and go on a regular basis. It also has many national and many international tourists who spend their summer holidays in the area, and it is not practical for many of them to register on the padron" he added.

The intention of the Department of Health is to explain to the Ministry, and hopefully make them understand, the uniqueness of Orihuela Costa, as a tourist area with a high number of residents who spend long periods, but do not register, and that also welcomes many tourists during holiday periods.

"We are going to tell them that the criteria they use is not appropriate to the Orihuela Costa and we will ask for a second health centre using different parameters," Galiano said.

Galiano has already explained the council's plans to neighborhood groups including CLARO at a recent meeting. He said that his proposals were well received and that members urged him to follow the plan through as a matter of urgency.

There the neighbours insisted that what they need is another health centre so they urged him to complain to the Generalitat. The councillor took advantage of the meeting to encourage all residents of Orihuela Costa to register in order to achieve an improvement in services.

Hours later, the government's spokeswoman, Isabel Celaá, announced an investment of 62 million to finance the repair of the damaged infrastructure in the region.

During his visit to Almoradí, Casado was accompanied by the leader of the PP in Valencia, Isabel Bonig, the president of the Diputación, Carlos Mazón, and the mayor, María Gómez.

Coinciding with the visit of Casado and his criticisms of the management of the CHS, which depends on the support of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, spokeswoman Isabel Celaá announced an investment of 62 million euros to repair the damage caused by DANA. Of this figure, 46.6 million will go to the Vega Baja where it will be used in the repair of infrastructures, rivers, channels and dry riverbeds in the area of ??the Segura basin.

In the period since the floods the Generalitat has already allocated 120 million euros. 1.5 million euros for repairs to educational centres, 3.7 million for sanitary facilities and 12 million for road repairs.

13 million euros is destined as direct emergency aid for damage to and the loss of essential goods of which 8,475 applications have been processed throughout the region and 2.7 million euros has already been paid, according to the mayor of Almoradí María Gómez.

The Orihuela Costa will not flourish until it has the infrastructure O

rihuela Costa has a surplus of living accommodation, villas, houses and apartments. Included in this number are restaurants, bars, supermarkets and commercial centres.

But unfortunately the one very important item that is sadly missing in Orihuela Costa is that of CULTURE! There is no library, theatre, concert hall, auditorium or cinema.

Residents of the area have to travel to Orihuela city, Torrevieja, San Fulgencio, Pilar de la Horadada, Murcia, Alicante or Elche to experience any form of culture.

One of the facilities that is most demanded is a library which residents say would not only be for the purpose of lending out books. It could be used as a meeting point for the residents of Orihuela Costa and an area for additional study by its schoolchildren.

There could be a comfortable corner, perhaps with small cafe facilities, where residents could browse through the daily newspapers, catch up with friends after returning their books and choosing new ones. It would be advantageous to have books and perhaps the daily newspapers in Spanish, English, German, Swedish languages etc., in an attempt to attract as many of our residents as possible to use this facility.

It would help to develop a sense of community in Orihuela Costa which could only be built around a cultural centre and which would help to unite and join all residents of Orihuela Costa together.

One further useful service would be the availability of computers and internet access, perhaps for a small fee.

Free Wi-Fi could also be installed to enable residents to bring and use their own laptops while enjoying their morning coffee and toast purchased at the cafe. Once a week a story teller could be organized (I am sure there are many residents who would be more than happy to take on this role for free) to read stories to the children in Spanish and perhaps on other languages. This would encourage our young residents to take an interest at a very early age in the Spanish language and also see the library as fun place to visit.

If it’s culture you want you need to travel out of the Orihuela Costa

A lot of residents, even from neighbouring towns such as Torrevieja or Pilar de la Horadada, have taken up writing upon retiring. These new hidden talents could see the establishment of ‘writer’s circles’ the members of which could be invited to read excerpts from their books or recite their poems. Such activities bring and bind residents together - this would help to mould and to integrate our community.

There would be no reason why the building could not be multi-functional, maybe including a theatre which could also be used as a concert hall and cinema. The only music that can be heard in Orihuela-Costa at the moment is when a band plays in a local bar.

There are many cultural events taking place in Orihuela city on a regular basis, some of which could quite easily take place in Orihuela-Costa if the appropriate premises were available. Various types of musical evenings could be organised, anything from classical to jazz. The building would also provide a home for the many theatrical societies that trawl the area looking for suitable venues.

Film evenings could be organised, some of a cultural or educational nature showing areas in and around Orihuela Town and Orihuela-Costa or featuring the many different areas of Spain. Cinema films could be shown in Spanish (to encourage people to learn the language) and perhaps in other languages with subtitles. These types of cultural functions encourage the residents to mingle and would help to unite the community.

Orihuela-Costa's beautiful beaches and never fail to shout about how many blue flags they have yet again been awarded, but the area is not only about beaches.

Orihuela Costa's residents definitely draw the short straw where culture and entertainment is concerned. It is about time that the area had the opportunity to show off and be proud of a new library, concert hall or cinema, facilities that the Orihuela Costa and its residents urgently need.

Victorious Prime Minister Boris Johnson among least trusted Celebrity Car Dealers only marginally better here. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn – a keen cyclist who does not own a car – finished 12th while Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, whose party failed to secure a single seat on election night, was the least trusted of the politicians listed, in 13th place.

CarGurus surveyed more than 2,000 car owners and buyers to find which celebrities they would trust the most when buying a used car**.

POINTS BASED DRIVING LICENSE VALID DRIVING LICENSE You can legally drive in Spain with your existing driving license for the first 2 years of residence, but after 6 months you must register your details with the provincial traffic authorities.

After 2 years, you must obtain a Spanish driving license or face a €200 fine. At the time of publishing this article, UK nationals can exchange their UK driving license for a Spanish driving license.

However with the Brexit process, we recommend you stay up to date via the gov.uk website. Driving licenses need to be renewed every 10 years up to the age of 65, and then every 5 years.

POINTS BASED SYSTEM Spain has a driving license points system. Drivers start with 12 points and can lose points for fines depending on

the severity of the offence. Once you loose all 12 points, you loose your license for 6 months. A traffic offence can be between 2 – 6 points, with a maximum of 8 points in one day.

If an offence is severe, it may result in the temporary loss of license. Keeping all your points will help reduce your vehicle insurance premiums.

Some of the offences where points are lost; driving while using a mobile phone or over the legal alcohol limit is 6 points. Whilst driving without a seatbelt is 3 points.

FULL LOSS OF POINTS If you lose all your points, you will need to complete a road awareness course of a total of 24 hours that can be attended over your 6-12 month ban period. And sit a driving theory test. You can check how many points you have by going to the Direccion General de Trafico (DGT) website, and create a password.

Refurbishment of Rojales Municipal Infant School completed.

Bus route introduced from Costa to Orihuela City The Councilor for Urban Transport, José Galiano, has signed an agreement with José Pedro García, of Autocares Costa Azul, aimed at providing a better bus network in the municipality.

The service will provide 37 lifeguards in high season and will extend the hours of cover by an hour in the morning and a further hour in the evening at a cost of 644,000 euros, including taxes.

The tender submitted by the Red Cross was the only offer presented despite the fact that there are several lifeguard companies in the province and the Red Cross proposal reduced the tender price of 689,000 euros by 45,000 euros over the two year period.

The contract is designed to guarantee the safety of bathers during Holy Week and the summer period along the coastline from de las playas Centre, La Roqueta, Vivers, Moncaio, Camp and Les Ortigues which will operate from ten in the morning to eight in the evening.

The service will provide 6 auxiliary posts equipped with all kinds of material and facilities and 13 disabled chairs, as well as a wide range of vehicles. It also includes a medical service at las playas Centre from which the headquarters will operate.

The restaurant owners took to Facebook to publish details of the intrusion and, at the same time to apologise to their loyal customers for being unable to open for a day or two.

They are also offering a ‘substantial’ reward for anyone with information that leads to the arrest of the ‘scumbags’ involved so if you do hear of anything locally please take it to the restaurant direct or pass it to the police.

The City Council of Guardamar del Segura has awarded Cruz Roja, the Red Cross, the rescue, first aid, and lifeguard service on its beaches for two years, which can be extended with two extensions of a further one year.

Refurbishment works of Rojales Municipal Infant School have been completed, with new paving, painting of facades, installing gutters and replacing the old fence.

"Pruning work in different parts of the municipality, specifically the areas of the Malecon de la Encantá and the Ruperto chapí square, along with other green areas pruned," said the spokesperson.

Meanwhile work is also continuing on the €300,000 dredging project after tens of thousands of tons of sediment entered points of the River Segura, during the biggest Gota Fria storms in history last September 2019.

A year of heartbreak as Henry is Remembered

The mayor and councillors from the Orihuela council attended the concentration held by the family of Henry

Alejandro Jiménez, in Orihuela City on Thursday to mark the one year anniversary of the young man’s disappearance.

Bascuñana said that his office and his staff remain “at the entire disposal of the family and will continue to do everything in our power to find the missing boy.” He said that everyone must still maintain hope in the belief that Henry will eventually be found alive and well.

It's now been twelve months without news of Henry who was last seen at a party in his home during the early

hours of New Year’s morning 2019, after celebrating New Year's Eve with friends and family. Since that morning he has completely disappeared leaving no trace.

His family, who were in Madrid in mid November at a meeting of relatives of missing persons organized by QSD Global, have said they will continue their search for as long as it takes and that they will never give up hope until he is found.

“It is a long, frustrating and heartbreaking road, in all senses and with much suffering as we continue to wait

for you. We need the name of Henry to be remembered, “says Gina, the young man’s mother as she appealed to investigators that their investigation is not abandoned.

Henry (right), who would have celebrated his 21st birthday last April, is 1.81 cm tall, he has curly brown hair and wears a tattoo on his right forearm featuring the face of a tiger.

Anyone with any information about his whereabouts is asked to call in confidence 062 or 112.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE 3 KINGS DAY FESTIVITIES On Sunday, the day before Three Kings Day, every sizeable village and town holds a parade, a ‘cabalgata’ at which the Three Kings are paraded through the streets of the town, accompanied by musicians, dancers, performers and bands. The parades are extremely popular and can often draw large crowds, particularly in such places as Torrevieja and Orihuela.

The day began at the Orihuela town hall where the Kings were greeted by mayor Emiliano Bascuñana before moving on to feature in the first parade of the day on the Orihuela Costa where, despite the Parade being scheduled for 12 noon, there was a healthy turnout to cheer it on its way between the Playa Flamenca town Hall and La Zenia Boulevard.

It was good to see that the initial reticence of the lunchtime parade seemed barely in evidence as the size of the crowds increased the further it got into the 2km route, but while all the protestations came from adults this was a day for the children, and there were certainly plenty in evidence, although some would argue that the standard of the parade itself was of a low quality and that numbers of youngsters, were probably down on previous years .

Getting away about 20 minutes late, as seems to be the way here in Spain, the Orihuela Costa parade featured about ten groups of artistes from Space Cadets to Star Wars. Dancers from Frozen were followed by Beauty and the Beast after which there was a group of eighteenth-century dance performing the minuet.

Sponge Bob and friends were a big attraction as they led a dance troupe of Eastern Maidens while bringing up the rear, a host of heavenly angels preceded a crib scene, followed by the 3 Kings, Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar.

An FAOC spokesperson told the Leader that the success of the cavalcade should not be measured by the number of people in attendance, but by the quality of the parade, currently an issue that many residents directly relate to the inadequate budget allocated by the City Council to the coastal community, understood to be in the region of 35,000 euro.

With the purpose of the ‘cabalgata’ being to foster the illusion of children, so that, they can then go to their homes to sleep and wait for the gifts, it was suggested that many parents had nevertheless chosen to take their families into Torrevieja and Orihuela where the two parades were scheduled to be held during the early part of the evening.

The Orihuela parade was a far more spectacular affair than that held on the coast while Torrevieja saw the arrival of the 3 Kings and their entourage by boat, where they were met by the city mayor Eduardo Dolon before joining the parade through the city centre, an event that attracted thousands of people and one that just gets better year by year.

Over 29,000 applications in 2019 were made, with over 16,000 applications processed, the highest number ever registered in a single year.

A total of 51% of passport applications were submitted online in 2019. By March a plethora of applications had been submitted in under three months. Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney said that more than 230,000 applications had been received, by that date in 2019.

More than 900,000 Irish passports were issued in 2019, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade - as the date of the UK leaving the EU nears.

The figures come in the wake of the United Kingdom set to leave the European Union on January 31, 2020.

The passport division of the Irish embassy in London has been working under pressure, with staffing levels not sufficient to meet the rising number of applications, ahead of Brexit.

The figure is up 7% on 2018 and a record made up of renewals and new applications.

IRREGULARITY OF AP-7 TOLLS AP-7 Motorway tolls removed unless you live in the Vega Baja where you must wait until 2048 Don’t get too excited if you live in the Vega Baja because, although the AP-7 between Tarragona and Alicante became toll free at midnight on 31 December after 48 years, along which motorist will now make a saving of €46, payment will still be necessary along the stretches from Alicante to La Zenia and Cartagena to Vera for up to another 28 years, until 2048 when the present concession eventually expires.

Tolls have also be removed from the stretch of the AP-4 between Seville and Cádiz, a 94-kilometre stretch that links both Andalusian provinces and the AP-7

between Tarragona and the French border will become free from 2021.

“This has never happened in Spain before, removing the tolls on a highway, it is the first time this has happened and it marks an important milestone and opens a new future for infrastructure and high-capacity roads in Spain,”said the minister José Luis Ábalos .

As a result of the removal of the tolls the Ministry of Public Works says that it expects traffic on the free part of the AP-7 to increase by at least 30 per cent. However not everybody is happy with the measure with many restaurants and service stations along the adjacent N-332 saying that the decision will force many of them into bankruptcy as that anticipate the loss of custom with a sizeable number of drivers moving their journeys from the National road and onto the Motorway.

A spokesman for HOSBEC, the Hospitality Business Association of Benidorm, Costa Blanca and Valencian Community, and the biggest defender of the status quo, says that his group is also unhappy with the removal of tolls as the move will see thousands of larger vehicles also moving their journeys off the National roads and onto the Motorway keeping day trippers and short term holidaymakers away from the area. He described the move as “as a poisoned gift.”

Jewish Community Celebrate Chanuka On the last night of Chanukah, Sunday 29th. December, more than 65 people gathered on the beach at Playa Flamenca for the lighting of the Menorah. It was a calm but cool evening which started with an impromptu firework display which everyone enjoyed.

As in previous years, I read a shortened version of the Miracle of Chanukah. This was followed by the lighting of our recently enlarged Menorah, while Hanerot Halonu and Moa Tzur were sung. Afterwards do-nuts and wine were served.

There is no cure for Coeliac disease but, once the condition has been diagnosed, switching to a gluten-free diet should help.

Irritable bowel syndrome and bloating People with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) often complain of bloating, especially in the evening.

The bloating of IBS does not seem to be linked with excess wind. It's thought to be down to erratic propulsion of contents through the bowel.

When to see a doctor If your bloating symptoms persist, consult your GP to rule out a more serious condition. Bloating and a persistent feeling of fullness are key symptoms of ovarian cancer.

Going out for a walk is often one way of quickly r educing bloating

e’ve all felt it: that too-full feeling you get in your belly. But it’s not always from eating too much. Does your body hold on to too much water? Is it something you ate? Or could a health issue be behind it?

Get rid of bloating by cutting out fizzy drinks and foods that cause wind. Sit down to eat and exercise regularly.

Most of us have experienced the feeling of being bloated, when your tummy is stretched, puffy and uncomfortable. It often happens after a big weekend or over a festive season.

But if you are experiencing persistent bloating, it may be caused by a digestive problem or issues with your diet.

If your tummy often feels bloated, it could be due to: Excessive wind Constipation Swallowing air (from talking while eating etc) Food intolerance Coeliac disease Irritable bowel syndrome Excess wind and bloating Cut down on foods known to cause wind and bloating, such as: beans

onions broccoli cabbage sprouts cauliflower But make sure you still eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day.

Constipation and bloating If you get constipation, take steps to prevent it by adding more fibre to your diet, drinking lots of fluids and exercising regularly. Even a 20 to 30 minute brisk walk 4 times a week can improve your bowel function.

Swallowing air and bloating Try not to swallow too much air. Do not talk and eat at the same time, sit down to eat (sitting upright and not slumped over), reduce the amount of fizzy drinks you consume, stop chewing gum and chew with your mouth closed so that you're not taking in excess air.

Food intolerance and bloating Food intolerance can lead to bloating when: your bowel does not empty properly the food causes gas to be trapped too much gas is produced as a reaction to the food

The most common foods to cause problems are wheat or gluten and dairy products.

The best approach if you have a food intolerance is to eat less of the problem food or cut it out completely.

Keep a food diary for a couple of weeks, noting everything that you eat and drink and when bloating troubles you most. But do not get rid of food groups long-term without advice from your GP. Coeliac disease and bloating Coeliac disease is a common digestive condition where your intestine cannot absorb gluten found in wheat, barley and rye.

If you have Coeliac disease, eating foods containing gluten can also trigger diarrhoea, abdominal pain and fatigue.

See your GP if you suspect you may have Coeliac disease.

Jorge Alió Foundation Humanitarian trip from Alicante returns the sight to almost 1000 people in Mauritania In a period of 7 days, the Jorge Alió Foundation ‘Nouadhibou Vision Project’ has treated a total of 830 patients and performed 130 surgeries

Alió Foundation, and Mr. Salah Edine Bechir, manager of the Nouadhibou Vision’ center also donated new medical and hospital equipment valued at €145,000.

A total of 830 patients were treated free of charge for seven days, 130 of whom required surgery in the three operating theatre zones that were open simultaneously.

In addition, several local authorities such as Mohamed Ould Ahmed Salem Ould Mohamed Raré, Governor of the Dakhlet Nouadhibou Region, and Hemida Souyeh, Vice-president of the Nouadhibou Regional Council, came with Salah Edine Bechir -Director of the center ‘Nouadhibou Vision Foundation Jorge Alió’- to see the development of the project, and to congratulate the entire team for the humanitarian and altruistic work that was being done.

Patients with very complex cases were treated at Nouadhibou Hospital, the largest ophthalmological center in Mauritania and Saharan Africa. Of these, 84 had to be intervened for cataracts with phacoemulsification technique, 41 for extracapsular cataracts and 5 for pterygium.

The ‘Nouadhibou Vision Project’ for International Cooperation was created in 2007 with the mission of building the first ophthalmological hospital in Mauritania.

In an altruistic way, five ophthalmic surgeons, five nurses, three optician-optometrists, one maintenance technician, a logistics volunteer and a person responsible for the organisation and institutional representation, carried out all their solidarity and professionalism with the aim of serving the most disadvantaged groups from the Mauritanian city and its peripheral neighborhoods.

It is an initiative of the Jorge Alió Foundation, chaired by María López Iglesias, and whose honorary president is Doctor Jorge Alió, Professor of Ophthalmology at the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) in Elche.

A team of 16 ophthalmology and health science professionals undertook a humanitarian trip to Mauritania to improve the visual health of the population of Nouadhibou.

A solidarity initiative framed within the 14th expedition of the ‘Project Nouadhibou Vision’ of the Jorge Alió Foundation for the Prevention of Blindness.

Our December competition had a Christmas theme to it with anglers being asked to dress accordingly, unfortunatly only 5 of the 14 took up the challenge. However Santa was looking down and the top 3 places were taken by anglers who did dress up.....absolutely nothing to do with good pegs.

The in-house Courtyard A and B teams went head-to head, with The Courtyard A progressing into the next round, following a 7-2 resounding victory.

8 of the 14 caught fish, although it was a fine day the fish seemed to be off their feed with the weights down from last month, varying weights to be expected over the winter months.

Over a hundred teams confirmed for Pinatar Arena Pinatar Arena will once again host over hundred teams at their training camps during 2020 and with the mid-winter season break now upon us the first teams are already arriving at the facility including Belgian Anderlecht, Chinese Beijing, Norwegian Mold, Austrian LASK, Swiss Lugano or Dutch Sparta.

The Arena will raise the curtain of its 8th season on Thursday 2 January with the arrival of 3 Belgian teams, Deinze, Leuven and Union Saint-Gilloise which is managed by Thomas Christiansen, and is one of the most successful teams in his country with 11 league titles.

However the most successful team in Belgium is Anderlecht, who, for the second consecutive year will focus on Pinatar Arena during the period January 5 to 12. The Pinatarense complex will also host Antwerp, Beveren and Sint-Truiden, as well as a number of other Belgian male and female teams from lower categories.

January will also see the arrival of the Chinese runners-up, the Beijing Guoan, who will be accommodated at the 5-star La Finca facilities from 3 to 22 January along with French side Lyon.

Other clubs arriving in January include Troyes, also from France,

Sparta Rotterdam from Holland and the Norwegian champions Molde, LASK Linz of Austria, Heidenheim of Germany, Lugano of Switzerland and the AFE National Team.

National Associations will also feature in 2020 with 50 different male and female squads already confirmed in categories Under 15 through to Under 21, where they will compete in a number of different competitions So once again Pinatar Arena will host training camps and friendly matches every month of the year, many of them being free to attend, achieving one of its objectives, that of tourism through football.

As expected the match was closely fought we won 4 of the rinks with 3 going to the last couple of ends. A good 10pts pick up.

The first SMGS gathering of 2020 saw turnout fall shy of a full house by just one player, with 39 members and 8 guests making their way to the not often visited Roda. Put back from a normal Wednesday due to New Year’s Day being on that day of the week, surprisingly few hangovers from festive celebrations were mentioned in the clubhouse.

Are we all becoming far more sensible and responsible, or were all the party boys and girls still out on the town!!? Or abroad?

The course was in excellent condition, especially the greens which were consistent throughout and rolling excellently. On a day with hardly a breeze, although overcast skies, good scoring could have been expected.

However, Roda is not the easiest track, particularly some of the early holes, and with pin placements often close to the front or at the very back, and always behind a bunker, unless the Scotty Philips technique of usually approaching the green from an adjacent fairway prevails, then some nice high soft landings were needed. Clearly a lot of members don’t have that particular skill!!

Hugh Reilly was the only one to better his handicap with the day’s best score of 37 points. Only 10 players managed to get more than 29 points.

Tony Smale may well have produced the shot of the day with his nearest the pin effort on the 13th. Spectacular!!

Husband and wife duo Sandra and John Crabbe saw off the lvill and Nikolov challenge in the second semi, both contributing to their winning formula.

After an appropriate break, the best of five 501 commenced, the C.C.'s two quickly into their scoring stride, Wright 100 and the opening double. A further ton from Wright and a 47 out gave the Flyers a 2-0 advantage, despite John Crabbe finding his scoring prowess.

The third and what was to be the last leg, was a real Christmas cracker, six tons, three from McKay, two from John Crabbe, the other from Wright, just gave the Flyers the edge for first crack at the double. Wright duly obliged on D8 for victory 3-0. Five winning matches without losing a leg, a formidable performance from both players. ln closing l would like to give a big thank you to all who made the evening a success, particularly the volunteer markers, organisers, sponsers and not forgetting the players.

DO THE GREENLANDERS complain when there is no grass on their course? No, they put a flag in the ice, use orange balls and get on with it.

Ice golf, which takes it's roots back to 17th century Holland, is very much alive and well in the Arctic Circle. The World Ice Golf Championship has been played since 1999 and draws an international field.

Because the course is built on a moving glacier the “whites” can only be cut a few days before the tournament in case they crack, The playing surface could be described as variable, with 2cm of frozen powder snow lying on an ice sheet. It's advisable to shallow out your angle of attack, to avoid broken wrists. As my old gran used to say, there are definitely more out than in.

Played in April on a small island called Uummannaq, off Greenland, the 36 hole tournament (promoted by Drambuie, it goes well with ice) sees golfers hitting the course in -50 degree temperatures. The greens are “whites” with smoothed down surfaces. Icebergs feature in the background, along with the odd strolling polar bear.

THE FALDO SERIES Europe 2019 took place on the Al Ain course, Abu Dhabi. The champion was Arron Edwards-Hill (20) from Chelmsford Golf Course, who overcame a 4-shot deficit on the final day to win the trophy by 2 shots from S. he Las Salinas Petanca League resumes this Friday with the Cup and Plate quarter-finals.

In the Cup Division 3 newcomers Rincon De Pedro from Guardamar, will entertain Los Bandidos from the Premier League, both teams have many top players, so an interesting match seems to be on the cards.

El Limonar, who are the leaders in Division 2b host Premier league leaders Franco Belgas Justin, a tough encounter for the Swedish side. San Miguel is home to Rocajuna, who occupy 3rd place in the Premier League.

The final match is between Franco Belgas Dalton, leaders of Division 1 b and Rocajuna Devils. with some teams missing players not back from the Christmas break this can create surprises.

The draw in the Plate brings Torre Bears at home to Blagul 3.

Monte promotion bid in own hands - Maccan LaMangaTorre CC Former Torrevieja CC enter 2020 after their first season in 2019 in division one, having amalgamated with La Manga CC, to form LaMangaTorre CC. And Kieran Wood, League Captain of LMTCC, took time out to give thanks to the Costa Blanca and Costa Calida Leader for the coverage undertaken.

"Thank you for all your help in spreading the word of our new team merging in The Leader during 2019," said Kieran.

"The team had an end of year annual meeting and we praised the work The Leader have put in to help highlight LaMangaTorre CC," said Kieran.

The new year bodes well, with talented Ollie Jarvis arriving at LaMangaTorre CC, in August: "Ollie played a big part in strengthening the bowling and batting in the team.

"He also played a part with the team's morale and atmosphere, playing in both the T20 tournaments in La Manga in October and in Malaga, for Halloween, winning both trophies," said Kieran.

LaMangaTorre CC play their fixtures at Torrevieja and La Manga Club, who hosted the first ECL (European Cricket League) in August.

Spain, Italy, Holland, Germany, Russia, France, Denmark and Romania took part in a T10 tournament, broadcast to over 110 countries. Catalunya Club de Cricket represented Spain.

La Manga hosted the annual T20 tournament in support of the Tom Maynard Trust in October.

"After a few weeks break we return on Sunday January 12, as a team ready to take the new decade by storm.
