The event was supported by members of the Royal British

Legion from 15 branches across the region as well as by the Mayor of Benidorm, Tony Perez.

Snr Perez joined in the annual march along the seafront, together with the Chairman of the District RBL, Don Cubbon, British Consul SarahJane Morris, Edward Dunn, Head of Campaigns at the British Embassy and navy

reservist, and Ms Kate Green, Overseas Team Lead of the RBL Worldwide.

It was led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums who were followed by a dozen or more standards and approximately two hundred proud veterans of all nationalities and services including many members of the RNA, RAAFA and RMA.

Once again, making their umpteenth appearance at the launch, having travelled from the Royal Hospital to be there especially, were Chelsea InPensioners Wayne Campbell and Skippy Teasdale who were escorted along the seafront by Father Don Witts, of the Costa Blanca Anglican Chaplaincy.

It was yet another event that made the participants feel very proud to be British, stepping out along the front to the rousing sound of the pipes, something not too often seen in the popular resort, but a sight that was enthusiastically applauded by the many spectators lining the route.

District Chairman Don Cubbon thanked the city of Benidorm for the war reception and welcome that it always provides to the Royal British Legion. He spoke of the hard work that his members had carried out over the previous year in which the Poppy Appeal raised over €176,000 He also emphasised that ALL of the money is used to help ex-servicemen and their dependants in their time of need here in Spain, mentioning just a few of the measures on which it was spent last year including furniture, stair lifts and the purchase of mobility scooters for those finding it difficult to walk.

The Mayor of Benidorm, Tony Perez, welcomed all participants as he took the rostrum.

He said how delighted he was to host the Launch of the Poppy Appeal once again, highlighting the many benefits it brings to the area and how it adds to the multicultural and multinational make-up of the city.

He said that the expatriate community was a very important part of the city of Benidorm and he was honoured and delighted to call many of them his friends.

The mayor was then presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by Don Cubbon, on behalf of the RBL in Spain. Mr Cubbon said that it was given in heartfelt thanks for the support and encouragement that the Ayuntamiento and the people of Benidorm provide to enable the launch of the Appeal to take place in such convivial surroundings.

In reply the mayor said that the Royal British Legion “is a role model” and that it can always count on the support and encouragement of the

Benidorm council.

Short speeches followed from Sarah Jane Morris, Edward Dunn and Ms Kate Green who all said how much of an honour it was to be involved in the event.

Kate Green spoke about the support that the RBL provides to many of its veterans in Spain and how important a part it now plays in the structure of the Spanish Social and Welfare system.

The launch ended with rapturous applause as the Standard Bears and the Pipes and Drums marched past the VIP guests before hordes of spectators, both English and Spanish, descended on Skippy and Wayne to pose for photographs, both of whom were absolutely delighted to oblige.

In District North, the RBL Poppy Appeal is aiming to exceed the 2018 total of 176,000 euro, monies that will enable the Legion to continue its vital work in delivering life-long support to Service and ex-Service personnel and their families here in Spain, through hardships, injuries and bereavements.

Every euro received in Spain will be used in Spain where it will make a real difference, not only to the lives of Service men and women and veterans that live amongst us, but to their families as well, who can also experience difficulties dealing with the circumstances of a loved one who is serving or who has served.

So make your donation and wear your poppy with pride in the knowledge that you will be supporting your past and present Armed Forces community.

Bahia Bella needs help but nobody is listening BAHIA BELLA is a Community with a population of approximately 200 + houses belonging to the municipality of Cartagena located on the border between Los Alcazares and Cartagena. We have been residents and lived in Bahia Bella 14 years whilst many other property owners have lived on Bahia Bella 30+ years.

Our annual IBI payments are made directly to Cartagena. For this we have a few scattered rubbish bins which are collected regularly but we have no street lighting, no pavements, no mains sewerage, and our mains water comes from Los Alcazares.

Bahia Bella and its residents suffered severely with the flood of 13th September (as did Los Alcazares (Murcia) plus Los Urutius & Los Nietos. The difference is they are all now well on their way to recovery with assistance still being given, roads still being cleaned, being jet washed, swept and the mud being cleared away.

5 DAYS AFTER THE FLOOD we asked for help from Los Alcazares fire brigade to pump out several swimming pools to alleviate the scourge of mosquitos and flies living off the green stagnant water – they immediately came to our assistance and we say a big thankyou.

We then had the students from Murcia University who were tremendous in helping all and anyone who needed it. Clearing houses, water, mud, personal items, furniture etc. etc. without complaint and

we of Bahia Bella say ‘Well Done and thankyou so very very much.

You arrived and gave us hope when morale was exceptionally low.’

NOW TODAY, OVER 4 WEEKS AFTER THE FLOOD ON 13th SEPTEMBER We are still waiting for Cartagena to appear and clear the wet slimy mud, the piles of dried baked mud, the muddy pockets of water growing algae feeding the mosquito and flies etc. to make them safely passable etc. Nowhere is there any sign that Cartagena are interested in doing anything about it. We still have household rubbish strewn about various areas, the contents of 90% of the houses that were unfortunately completely flooded with a river of water and brown slimy mud containing sewage and debri from the fields and other surrounding Ramblas.

On 14 October we had rain and we immediately saw the consequences that if our roads are left uncleared/uncleaned, each time we have rain, no matter how little, the result will be the same IMPASSABLE MUD FLOODED ROADS AND PAVEMENTS BAHIA BELLA appears to be forgotten, the inhabitants left existing in totally unacceptable conditions without any support. Rest assured we have not sat back waiting! - all that has been achieved so far in clearing up has not only been with the help of Murica University and Los Alcazares local fire brigade but especially by the residents themselves who worked tirelessly day after day hoping that eventually someone will acknowledge that we deserve the same respect and support as all other residents in Spain.

We desperately need help to recover our roads, pavements and the safety of street lighting etc.

Please can someone hear us, we want nothing more than what the Spanish Constitution guarantees for any resident of this country.

Albatera, the most important concentration camp of Franco Despite the Civil War ending on 1 April 1939 the concentration camp remained open until 27 October As we approach our annual period of Remembrance spare a thought for the horrors suffered by more than 15,000 people on our doorstep in San Isidro, where at least one mass grave has been located, according to the results of a recently published study carried out by local archaeologist Felipe Mejías.

Thanks to the testimonies, the archaeologist has been able to determine that, there is at least one large mass grave and many small graves on the site where the concentration camp was located, specifically just outside the fence of the main camp in an area that occupied an extended plot of 700 metres long and 200 metres wide.

Can you imagine being without food or water for four days and then having to share a small can of sardines and a piece of bread on the other three days of the week?

“There were buildings in front of the fence, so the prisoners never knew that those who died were buried there, they only saw bodies being taken away in trucks, or they heard the shots of the executions, but they did not know where the bodies were taken,” he says.

This was the plight of over 15,000 people as they remained incarcerated in the Albatera concentration camp for over 6 months following the Spanish Civil War. Huddled together in subhuman conditions, and victims of torture, many had previously held important positions in the government of the Republic; mayors, civil governors and political commissioners, as well as former members of the military, journalists, trade unionists and artists, who were captured in the port of Alicante as they tried to leave Spain on the British ship SS Stanbrook, on March 28, 1939, two days before the end of the war.

These are the results from only part of a study published by the archaeologist and historian Felipe Mejías - within the InterUniversity Chair of Democratic Memory of the Valencian Community of the universities of Alicante, Valencia and Jaume I of Castellón in conjunction with the Ministry of Justice.

“Now I have 4 reliable verbal testimonies from people who have told me how bones and corpses were found in these areas," he says.

"One of the farmers told me that 60 years ago a skull was uncovered by a tractor when his father was working the land. It is not the only find. In the same area a femur and an arm were also discovered.”

But, without a doubt, the testimony that caused the most impact and that resulted in the conclusion that there was a common grave, was that of a field labourer, now retired, who told him that in 1977 during work to lay irrigation pipes in the area previously occupied by the concentration camp, two bodies were discovered coated in a grey crust, thought to be quicklime.

Despite the Civil War ending on 1 April the concentration camp remained open between April 6, 1939 and October 27 of that year.

“The most shocking thing was that they immediately covered over the ditch, because they were told to do so by the foreman. They then promptly opened another channel 10 metres away where more bodies were discovered and there were even more 12 metres further along. When he told me about it, I got really excited,” says the archaeologist, who explained that “this shows that there is a large pit in the area containing many corpses and now it will be necessary to carry out excavation work using geo radar to locate the bodies”.

Mejías was the first investigator to obtain reliable testimonies from residents in the area who not only told him what their parents and grandparents had told them previously about the concentration camp, but also where the human remains had been found by people working in local fields.

Compromís has now presented a proposal to the Congress of Deputies for the area to be protected as a space for memory and thus the work can now be carried out, with the authority of by the National Historical Memory Law and the recently approved Autonomous Democratic Memory Law.

Mejías says that, without hesitation, Albatera was the most important concentration camp of the Franco era. Now in the municipality of San Isidro, there were countless people who died, both from hunger, from illnesses and many more who were executed, because of their republican status.

The Migratory Monarchs' make the lengthy migration journey from Canada and northern America, to Mexico and California, repeating their travels in the opposite direction in the following Spring.

Bristly silkweed plants have been introduced into the Iberian peninsula, enabling the Monarch butterfly to colonise in Spain.

In Tenerife and the Canary Islands scarlet milkweed is grown, as an ornamental garden flower, that attracts the species.

Orihuela mayor visits Brussels to ask for EU Aid

he mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, travelled to Brussels last week where he met EU Commissioners and MEP’s to discuss the situation in Orihuela and the Vega Baja region following the September floods.

He was accompanied by two councillors from the Government Team, the councillor for tourism, Mariola Rocamora, and for large projects, Sabina-Gorretti Galindo.

On day one of the two day visit the Orihuela party held meetings with Miguel Arias Cañete, Commissioner for Climate Action and energy; Christos Stylianides, Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management; and with Esteban González Pons, 1st Vice President of the European People's Group.

Elche Judge demands reopening of Theatre The Administrative Court of Elche has instructed the architect Antonio Marquerie Tamayo to provide the final certification for the work of the Municipal Theatre. He has done so at the request of the Torrevieja City Council, in response to the architect's claim of 130,000 euros for alleged unpaid fees in his role as director of construction work.

Once this is done the City Council could completely unlock the procedure to grant the building's opening license. This is the only documentation that now remains to be completed in order to reopen the theatre, first built in 2006, but which was closed by the previous council in 2015.

However the architect still argues that he has only received part of his agreed fees of 249,482 euros,

Bascuñana said that he was encouraged by the willingness of all European representatives to know first-hand the situation in Orihuela and the Vega Baja region. "They have guided us in the different measures that we can undertake in the short and medium term to approach the recovery for the damages suffered, as well as the necessary infrastructure to prevent this type of disasters from happening again," said the mayor.

He said that he was particularly indebted to the President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, as well as to the MEP Esteban González Pons and his team, for the great work done in helping with the arrangement of the meetings, and to Juan Ignacio Zoido for his involvement with Orihuela and the region.

By Andrew Atkinson A Mass and procession in Honour of Los Montesinos Patron The Blessed Virgin of Pilar took place at the town's Church as part of the Comision Fiestas Los Montesinos 2019. the corresponding legal percentage of the total cost of 6,429,191 euros. But he says that that the builder then received another 4,669,154 euros, for additional costs over the initial budget, which increased the commission that he was due.

That extra cost was validated at a government meeting in early 2011 by the then mayor Pedro Hernández, six years after the City Council first opened the building.

Evidence said that stabbed his former partner Nicola Houghton in the back following a heated argument and then fled the scene leaving her for dead. She was found lying in a pool of blood by her daughter later in the day with a knife embedded in her back. Paramedics rushed the victim to hospital, where she underwent an operation to have the weapon removed.

After an international arrest warrant was put out for Grundy the 53 year old was subsequently arrested in the Rincon de Loix district of Benidorm after he went on the run. He was found with almost 5,000 euro in his pocket with which it is thought he was preparing to flee the country.

Arrested Northampton tourists unable to return home

Although deemed not as severe at the Gota Fria storms that devastated the Vega Baja regions in September, it is unsure has to how bad the rains will be.

Six Northampton tourists who were arrested in Elche early last month remain on police bail, are unable to return to the UK and have to report to the Elche courthouse every month.

Heavy rainfall could occur during October 21, 22 and 23 - the 'cold drop' spanning across Alicante - as sea temperatures decrease.

The men were arrested after they were involved in a fight with a group of local men while watching a football match in a bar.

The State Agency of Meteorology and the Laboratory of Climatology of the University of Alicante have warned Tuesday October 22 will see 'torrential' rain.

Witnesses say that they assaulted a 36-year-old man, without any apparent cause, after which they ran off in different directions, each also resisting arrest when confronted later that morning by the national police.

Severe storms across the Mediterranean and the Balearic Islands are forecast during October 21-22.

Mediterranean water temperatures are set to drop next week, with the heavy rainfall warning alert of torrential rains being put in place.

A court in Alicante has last week found expat David Grundy guilty of attempted murder, having stabbed his ex-girlfriend following an altercation in their Campoamor home two years ago. He is now set to do nine years behind bars in a Spanish jail.

Temperatures in the Vega Baja regions hit 26 degrees on Friday, with a forecast of 25 degrees during the weekend.

Local painter to feature at Royal Hospital Suzanne Stokes, a local artist from Quesada, took a photograph of Wayne, Skippy and Joe as they stood in a shaft of sunlight in the Orihuela Cathedral on Armed Forces Day. ‘It was 38 degrees that day,’ said Suzanne, ‘and they were all in their scarlets. I asked them how they coped, to which they smiled and said “We’re soldiers”. I simply had to paint them.

More Gota Fria aid to Vega Baja

By Andrew Atkinson Exclusive THE President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, has announced 5.8m euros funding in the wake of the devastation the Gota Fria, brought to the Vega Baja regions in September.

“Both in the area of the Vega Baja region and in the Vall d'Albaida, where this climatic circumstance occurred, there have been significant losses at an economic level.

"With this extraordinary plan we want to address the situation of those who, in the first instance, more are suffering this situation from the economic point of view”, said the President, in relation to those who lost their jobs, due to the Gota Fria devastation.

A 5.8m euros 'employment plan' will be made for Municipalities - directly affected by damage

caused by the storms - the biggest in 150 years.

The announcement was made by the Head of the Consell, with one of the aspects included in the Consell Agreement of September 20, of aid measures to the municipalities affected by the DANA. The latest announcement of funding is in addition to the initiatives already taken by the Consell, with colossal damage by the Gota Fria, in the regions of La Vega Baja and Vall d'Albaida.

It is being considered that the plan will help Municipalities, to continue the work of restoration, reconstruction and implementation and normalization of cities and towns.

They concede that they were involved in an altercation but they claim they were not the initial aggressors. The men are said to have all lost their jobs and now face losing their homes.

A lawyer for the men said the ban on leaving Spain is a precautionary measure agreed by the judge given the seriousness of the facts and she is trying to end this situation as soon as possible.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman said: “We are providing assistance to six British men following their arrest in Elche and subsequent release on bail and are in contact with their lawyer and the Spanish authorities.”

Dear Sir, I have spoken to Helen Akerman and the Claro Team about the great piles of rubbish that accumulate in the car park in front of Edificio Triana, a community of forty two flats on Calle Jupiter, La Florida, just behind the Emerald Isle.

My name is Sam Hart and I act as president for the block of flats which has a dustbin outside, to the right of its front gate, in an area of car parking spaces.

Unfortunately it seems as though the car parks have been designated as a dumping ground for people from all over the la Florida area and beyond who bring their rubbish in cars, vans and large vehicles comprising old kitchen furniture, toilets, bidets, water heaters, old sofas and general household rubbish.

Initially it was dumped around the dustbin but it now spreads out to cover several car parking spaces, obstructs the footpaths and blocks access to wheelchair ramps.

These people clearly regard the place as a dumping ground and have no consideration for those of us who live in the flats or the area generally.

I complained several times to Claro when Bob Houliston was councillor for the coast but things have only got worse as sometime later a bottle bank was introduced which only served to reinforce people’s perception of the site as a dump.

I have submitted complaints on the appropriate forms, in Spanish, with the help of the manager of

There are many more appropriate places to accumulate green waste Urbagest, the community administrators, and taken them to the appropriate office in the Ayuntamiento, but received no acknowledgement or response.

I suggested that they could reposition the bottle dank in the car park at The Emerald Isle where there is plenty of room. This could be done very easily.

There are many more appropriate places to accumulate green waste, but nothing is taken up by the council.

Is it legal for our administrators to fund a notice pointing out that we are not a rubbish dump?

For the most part the bottle bank is used by the Emerald Isle and by people from outside the community and as the bin becomes quickly overfilled the rubbish is just distributed around the car parking areas in a very careless manner.

At least you have something to show after a love-bite…!

T

his nostalgia is an awful yoke. We are all enslaved by a sentimental longing for a past that was a place strewn with happy personal memories. We Irish do nostalgia better than most – but there again; we have much to be nostalgic about. I’ll tell you what I am pining for at this particular point in time. When have you last seen a decent love-bite? The good old fashioned love-bite would appear to have gone the way of the dodo and the corncrake.

God be with the days when life was so much simpler and easier to figure out. We were relaxed and easy going and the only people around were those we grew up with. In primary school I was the only one with a pen-pal; whom I corresponded with for a few years.

I never met him; but I still remember the name and address of Tom Bolger, Kilmurray Mid, Arklow, Co. Wicklow. Now a lad of similar age has 1,800 friends on Facebook. I digress … where was I? Ah yes, this country needs to concentrate on bringing back the bonding of the love-bite.

I miss salty home-cured bacon, Micheál ò Hehir, the showbands, ‘lady’s choices’ and all that jazz. We have to accept that the world has outgrown the innocence of the past; but this column strongly contends that there is still a place in the modern world for the lovebite: Not only that, but we believe that its revival would cure a lot of the country’s ills. Any of you interested in giving it the kiss of life before it is too late?

During my late teens and early twenties, a love-bite was the greatest badge of honour known to man. It was one of the few notches which couldn’t be faked or lied about – simply because you couldn’t give one to yourself. It was a public statement of conquest, submission and ownership. Looking back now – and in all humility, I recall that I spent an awful lot more time looking for one than looking at one.

When I worked on the buses in England; New Ferry Bus Depot was nothing short of a love-bite factory. The guy I envied most was a young driver by the name of Doug. His ‘clippie’ was also his girlfriend and they became engaged. Judy was the sexiest little thing you ever did see and she and Doug would come in with matching

love-bites; like two on the same side of the neck or whatever.

A couple of years before that, I boarded with a few fellows in Galway; and if I want a nostalgic laugh to myself, I only have to think of what Mrs Lawlor had to put up with. Names and faces spring to mind; the quiet and studious Walter McDonnagh from Moycullen, Laois man, Seamus Mortimer who now lives in Collinstown, (fear not Seamus!) and a wild young hell-raiser from Ardrahan, by the name of Jerry Callinan. Casanova Jerry was into love-bites big-time and one night after a dance he told us the most erotic story of that night’s experience; so much so that I used get him to repeat it over and over.

The love-bite was once a public statement of conquest, submission and ownership.

‘I was giving her a love-bite on the side of the neck, up against a wall at the back of the Seapoint Ballroom’, was how the commentary commenced. Half way through the execution of the operation, Jerry paused to change the air in his lungs. ‘Is that hurting you’ he asked? ‘It is … but I like it’, came the reply - and the Galway man quickly resumed his task.

When Jerry was fully satisfied that his trade mark was planted on his second-date girl friend, he arched his neck invitingly like a swan and announced; ‘now it is your turn to give me a bit of hurt if you like?’

The girl’s next sentence, surely the most unromantic response in the history of romance, became our catch-phrase for the remainder of my time in Galway. ‘I have a gum-boil’!

This column previously made a valiant case for bringing back the wink. We did have some success at the time – if judging by the number of people who blocked me on the footpaths of Mullingar with exaggerated winks. But this love-bite crusade is much more vital for our well being. We need to pull together and show our love for each other – and there is only one way to do that. Go for it!

Think how much more easily we would identify with our politicians if they sported the odd love-bite; (fill in a face to suit your taste) and wouldn’t a little island on the neck put the finishing touches to Joan Blackburn’s weather forecast? This is only the tip of the ice-berg …

Daya Vieja thieves' haul in wake of Gota Fria floods

By Andrew Atkinson A family in Deya Vieja have been left devastated after being robbed of thousands of pounds worth of items - weeks after suffering flooding in the Gota Fria.

"Not only have we suffered great sadness from all the sentimental items - lost during the floods we have now been robbed," said victim Eve Brady.

Thieves entered the garden and stole a number of valuable items from an annex and garage.

"This gang is clearly thieving on a regular basis and knew exactly which items they wanted.

"They chose items - easy to sell on the black market," said Eve, from Norfolk.

Items stolen included a new/unused petrol pump; a Honda 5HP petrol lawn mower; a new/unused

Draper petrol water pump; an Elnhell 500 petrol chain saw; a 4" electric grinder, with diamond cut disc and an assortment of discs.

A Titan 9" grinder, with a diamond cut disc; a Worx 20V battery drill and chargers; a Bosch jig saw; a Bosch 110V hammer drill and transformer; a Stanley tool box with a selection building tools.

"The items stolen were those not damaged by the floods. Clearly these horrible people don't have a heart," said Bank Midwife Eve. "It's very obvious that we have experienced a huge amount of damage - and heartache - as a result of the floods," said Eve, who returned to Spain from the UK, to collect her dad.

"I went to the UK to collect my 87 year old dad - for a holiday.

His arrival in Daya Vieja was badly tainted," said Eve. "I have had to spend time at the police station - instead of having a relaxing time with him," said Eve. The Policia Local remind people to remain vigilant, and to report anything suspicious, by phoning 112.

Spanish Castle Movie Magic I

n 1936 Gary Cooper and Marlene Dietrich made the film ‘Desire’, a musical comedy with Spanish scenery as a backdrop.

Although the actors never set foot on Spanish soil, some images shot by a crew that visited San Sebastian and Toledo were recorded, and for this reason, for the first time, not only one but two Spanish film castles made it into a Hollywood film.

Many years have passed, and many Spanish movie castles have appeared on silver screens all over the world, four of them alone in Samuel Bronston’s epic El Cid. Now, two north Europeans have got together, united in their love of Spain (and of their respective Spanish wives) to create a new project designed to increase awareness of the value of Spain’s castles, especially in the cinema and tourism sectors.

Bob Yareham, an English and history teacher from London, based in Valencia since 1981, has been writing about English-language films shot in Spain for many years.

Cas Eggermont is a Dutch entrepreneur who comes from Tilberg, where Vincent Van Gogh studied as a child. He has always worked in commercial healthcare.

about our past. As well as being visually spectacular, they hover over all of us as each generation fades into the mists of time.

For this reason, the project includes visits to schools to share their research with students and teachers in an interactive audio-visual activity.

The first visit will be at IES Les Alfàbegues, Bétera; a town near Valencia, with its own castle of course.

There are about 2,500 castles in Spain and their location always tells us something about what was happening when they were built; and especially, who needed protection from whom.

Curiously, the province with the most castles, Jaén, doesn’t appear in this work, as no English-language film has been made in any of its castles, for the moment.

There are also doubts about what a castle is. Some walls, such as those of Artajona, Navarre, which depicts Nottingham in the film ‘Robin and Marian’, resemble a castle, while the frequently filmed walls of Ávila are not included.

The Arabs distinguished an Alcazaba (walled city) from an Alcázar (castle), although the difference is often minimal.

The site, in English and Spanish at the moment, tells the stories of some 80 cinema castles, explaining the part of the films shot there as well as a bit of history and the current use of each one. It’s not a technical site, and doesn’t go into architectural details, but looks for legends and especially ghosts because, at least in the United Kingdom, a castle isn’t worth a pile of rubble if it doesn’t come with a ghost.

In the end, in any project, you have to establish some kind of limit, to hedge your bets. In this project the authors have included castles that appear in English-language feature films, but not in short films or series (although some, especially the unbearably successful Game of Thrones, get a mention when there was also a feature film shot in the same place, as in the case of the castle of Almodóvar del Río in the province of Córdoba).

The project Spanish Castle Movie Magic is not only about the past; another objective is to encourage visitors to explore Spain’s rich heritage and to visit locations that don’t suffer from tourist massification.

used, producing footage and photos using drone technology in order to encourage film makers to take a look at possible future sites for shooting.

There will also be a special section for sponsors who want to use the site to promote their own castle-related activities, or simply to lend a hand to a project which has received no other help with costs apart from the creators’ own contributions.

The project has only just begun; in the near future they will be adding more castles and developing the information about the existing ones.

Gary Barlow and Esteban Go Marching In!

By Andrew Atkinson WORLD EXCLUSIVE MADRID born musician Esteban Fernandez was at the forefront of Gary Barlow and Take That's group formation three decades ago that lead to them becoming worldwide stars.

"My working time with Gary was at Manchester's Bredbury Hall Country Club and Restaurant in Stockport," Esteban told me.

"I was already resident there for quite a while," said Esteban, married to Manchester born wife, singer/dancer Norma.

"The manager Mr Sykes told me that a new band was forming - and that the piano and singer was going to work with me," said Esteban, resident in Dona Pepa, Alicante.

"I played alongside Gary until the band was ready to perform at Quaffers Discoteque and Night Club, that also belonged to the same Bredbury Hall company," said Esteban.

Quaffers, a former golf club, opened in 1978 and hosted world stars, including Dame Shirley Bassey, The Stylistics, Edwin Starr Dr Hook and The Drifters. It closed in 1998 and was bulldozed in 2004.

Take That appeared at Quaffers to The Thunderbirds theme tune with the stage rising up from the floor.

Frodsham, Cheshire born Gary, 48, OBE, who has sold 50 million records, has received six Ivor Novello Awards from The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.

Gary, who credited Sir Elton John with inspiring him to play the piano, performed on the Northern Clubs circuit in the eighties, being paid £18 in early concert dates.

SAMARITANS IN SPAIN FANGTASTIC FAYRE IN AID OF SAMARITANS IN SPAIN

amaritans in Spain invites readers of The Leader to come along to their Fangtastic Fayre taking place at Punta Marina – front of Charity Shop & Drop in Centre, on Thursday 31 October between 12 and 4pm.

Volunteers will be getting in the Halloween spirit by dressing up for the afternoon whilst enticing visitors with devilish cakes and goodies to purchase. There will also be a variety of games to try with many a treat (and maybe a trick or two!).

The whole afternoon will be hosted by Sunshine FM and live entertainment will be provided by The Drop in Centre at Punta Marina

Melissa Jade. Back by popular demand, Melissa will be singing a range of hits including a few spooky numbers (well it is Halloween!).

Grab yourself a Christmas bargain With Christmas just around the corner, the Shop has plenty of party outfits on offer as well as a sale of Christmas decorations.

Spanish Civil War: Search for descendants

By Andrew Atkinson A search for descendants of Bertha Dickinson, a volunteer Nurse working for the Republican Government during the Spanish Civil War, is underway - 83 years on.

"Bertha Dickinson departed England for Spain in late 1936, returning in 1938, escorting another nurse named Penny Phelps who was in ill health," Terry Bayes told me.

"If I can obtain any information of her career in Spain, I will apply to Preston Trades Union for a commemorative plaque, similar to the one in the Peace Garden for a fellow Preston lass Mary Slater."

Terry added: "My enquiries have taken me to Spain, Canada and America - without success although I am determined that the memory of Bertha will not be lost in our local history.

"I am hoping to try and locate a pay list for nurses, which was located at Benicassim during the Civil War, of which information should indicate her location."

Bertha was born in Preston, Lancashire, and Terry said: "I know she went to Spain, as she has a single line entry in the Moscow Archives of Volunteers.

A modest 120 checkout currently leads the high finish slot courtesy of John Walker, but l would expect that to be bettered to around 160, which is the highest out not using the centre. Anything higher is just that little more difficult where the bull is necessary.

C.C.'s made it three straight wins with a convincing 8 - 4 scoreline over the visiting " Chicks" of Chemies. ln fact both points were in the bag for the " Flyers " after taking the first seven legs. Gail Murray 100, 121, D6, and the Pattisons, Richard 121, and Christine D3, doing most of the damage in the opening six legs.

Durrant and Cripwell faced each other in the 10th in what was to be a real " ding dong ". Multiple tons from both and swift finishing resulted in a narrow 2 -1 outcome for Durrant in what was to be the best match of the night and a Hub point.

Veteran Ray Hayes figured next, needing a victory to keep his side in the game. His opponent Harrison, couldn't quite match the scoring power of Hayes 3 x 100 and clinical single dart finishing of D8 and D16. 6 - 5 the scoreline, Taylor to face Rouffignac. The Pirate gave a good account of herself to include 125, 100, but Taylor knew the points were at stake, raising his game to close out on D16 for a narrow victory.

El Capitan continued their winning ways entertaining the Legends from High Life. The table toppers however, went 1 - 2 down after the opening triples, before taking all three pairs, John Walker finishing the required 601 on a nice 120 out, in the first. Seven singles went the way of the hosts, Ginge Lewis ensuring both points in the tenth leg. Les Adams was the only Legends singles victor. Nigel Justice and Les Adams were voted MOTM. Mario Garcia was in fine form for the Bullies of Las Rosas scoring an impressive 4x100,1x140, earning him the MOTM award. Jerry Gledhill wasn't far behind with 2x100, 121, and 2x140.

Opponents Ale House Lads lost the match in my opinion by failing to take one pair, their sharing of the singles and edging of the triples, cost them at least a point. Alan Havelock won three of the Lads five legs, winning his singles with a 125, 140, D20 and D16 for a deserved MOTM. Milos made the journey to High Life worthwhile by nudging out the Hi Ho's 5 - 7. Charles Pritchett once again earning MOTM for the hosts, Steve Formby for Milos. Pritchett's 2x100, 120, 122, 140 and D8, D13, disappointingly failing to gain any spoils, despite an earlytriples lead of 2 - 1.

The pairs went the opposite way Pritchett hitting D13 to level at three apiece. Bob Deamer managed the all important double for overall victory for Milos, Kieran Fletcher finding D5 in the final leg for Hi Ho's fifth.

Ale House host Karl Mallinson falls under this weeks " Spotlight ", seen here serving a delicious " Coors ". The true blue scouser, don't mention the " Reds ", has supported his beloved Everton for all of his 39 years.

Having occupied the bar for the past 7 years, the Liverpudlian undertook a recent expensive refurbishment to make it one of the most popular venues on Villa Martin Plaza. The tastefully refurbished Ale House now hosts two Thursday evening dart teams the " Lads " and the " Chicks " plus a popular golf society.

Karl shares his life with wife Lisa and four year old Frankie. A pretty useful player himself and like many others is disappointed at the retirement of Phil " The Power ", but nevertheless admires the achievements of Dutchman Michael van Gerwen regularly on one of his numerous wide screen TV's.

A lovely bunch of Loungers welcomed the crutch-wielding Tiaras but then gave them a dam good drubbing. The wee beasties amassed 14 tun plus scores, double the total the ladies achieved this week.

As usual, a lot of the games went to a 3rd leg decider but the ladies were flagging by the end of the long night, having helped out with a bit of the chalking to encourage reciprocation on the return fixture.

Well done to Billy Dolling and Lesley Eagles for the their MOTMs. Billy gaining it for 3 game points and Lesley for her stupendous effort in her singles win against Mike Teirney. Well done to Lisa Ivill for hopping back and forth the to the ockey in her Triples and Pairs games, ably supported by her captain.

Anonymous true story. The husband of a well known Euronics league couple, pinned a map of the world to their garage dartboard and invited his better half to throw an arrow and wherever it landed they would holiday there to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. Unfortunately, the outcome was two weeks at home as she managed to miss the board, but hit the skirting board instead.

30th CELEBRATION GAME for LA MARINA What a great morning. The Provincial Select brought players from 9 local Clubs to celebrate our 30th Anniversary.

Unfortunately our Captain Dave Hadaway was taken ill with Man Flu and was unable to play.

Also the provincial Captain was unable to take part after having a fight with his cat. It would appear that the cat won. The provincial won as well on five out of the six rinks.

Our winning rink was skipped by Shirley Hadaway with Dave McGaw (ey man), Jeff Halfhyde and Margaret McLaughlin 21 – 12. Two other rinks were very close, Mick Lowe, Arthur Cronk, Jean Tregoing and that Ann Stone fought well and there was only one in it for nine ends eventually losing 15 – 16.

All told the Tregoings, the Stones and the Cronks did alright for their rinks plus Garth Slater.

Afterwards we were treated to a delicious paella

provided by the owners and the President Dave Taylor and Captain Dave Hadaway provided a well-earned drink of cava.

Thanks also go to Cllr Darren Parmienter for his speech after the game going over the history of the Club. Thank you to everyone who took part or watched for making it a really good celebration.

The Winter league had Vistabella at home to La Siesta with a tie 6 – 6 with shots 82 – 83 again a very tight result and hard fort match.

The Picadors had a loss against the La Siesta Golds of 4 – 10 with 90 shots for and 124 against, finding the greens difficult to handle and the Lanzadores a good win of 12 – 2 against the Greenlands Oaks with shots of 107 to 88 against.

At the time of writing unfortunately no results were received from the Conquistadores and Eagles.

First match of the season for Country Bowls Flamingos was at La Siesta against the Pioneers on a cloudy Monday morning. A lovely days bowling with friendly and convivial hosts.

The Pioneers put up a great battle and gave a tough game but the Flamingos stood victorious with a score of 10 – 4 .

Well done to the Flamingos. A fantastic start.

On Friday saw the Quesada Swans swanning into Country Bowls Club to play against the Cubs.

The Cubs were on top for a while but the Swans came through big style and beat the little Cubs 14 – 0. Shots - 69 to Country Bowls & 128 to Quesada.

We went over to San Luis to play their Tigers and they did well to beat us.

Mo Kidd, Carole Smith and Mick Stone won 21 – Again tied on rinks won but they had a better shot 17 while Anne Stone, Jim Reeves and Alex Whyte difference. Our winning rinks contained the triumphed 18 – 14. Not to be outdone the Captain Stones again. Rolling stones gather the most Tom Spencer won 19 – 11 with great help from points!!!

Monday found the Raiders entertaining San Luis Galaxies, which proved to be a very successful morning, the Raiders taking the rinks by 5-1 and the overall shots. Meanwhile the Pintos were at La Marina playing Pathfinders, a venue I always enjoy playing, such a friendly lot. We had great fun and came away with a draw, 2 rinks to 3, with one draw and taking the overall shots by just 3. A good away result.

A number of the Geckos were unable to play, several out of the country, so it was just the 18 remaining here that made it to the green.

The same determination and grit was evident from the off and even though the Toreadors fought with tenacity and enthusiasm, the Geckos hung in and then went on to win on 4 of the 6 rinks.

The points were so close that the Toreadors won the all important 1 shot advantage on the very last shot of the last game taking the shots by just 1.

while they have been successful in obtaining at least 30-40 buggies they are still operating buggies on a first come first served basis.

New Sierra Golf This is currently an excellent 9 hole course and they have now started initial works on the other 9 holes and have plans to open these additional holes by October 2021.

Saurines This course was probably the worst affected by the storms and floods with extensive damage to the course infrastructure and the course is still closed and will remain that way until the 30th November 2019.

Mosa Trajectum We understand that work is taking place to re-open 9 holes but with significant changes to the original course design and will provide more information when known We will attempt to keep you updated of any changes.

Around and about the golf courses Since our last around and about the golf course article we have faced the worst storms and floods for more than 100 years which devastated some local course particularly those in Murcia so it is only appropriate that we provide our readers with a full update.

Campoamor They have re-laid all 18 greens over the summer months and had planned to reopen the greens and the course in full by the 16th October 2019 and this has not been the case with play currently on 9 greens (which are in a poor condition) and 9 temporary greens and we will keep you updated when this situation changes.

La Marquesa The front nine holes (which were being re-modelled) were badly damaged by heavy floods and currently only the back nine holes are open for play so they offer only 9 hole rounds or 18 holes by playing holes 10-18 twice and this situation will not change in the immediate future and we will keep you updated of changes La Serena Although the course was not too badly affected (except bunkers as on all courses) they lost their buggy fleet and they are currently operating with a reduced number of buggies.

La Torre There was significant damage to bunkers but the biggest problem is that after the water receded it left the fairways covered in silt and mud and the course is still closed and will remain that way until the 1st November 2019 although they are targeting the 25th October 2019.

Las Colinas The course was not too badly affected by the storms (other than the bunkers of which 80% are now back in play) but again they lost their entire buggy fleet and

Rubys GS Poppy Appeal & Bounce Captain George Marshall Deane selected the Royal British legion poppy day appeal for his charity day this year and hand picked his team to try again to win this annual event.

With an excellent turn out of 32 players we all tackled Vistabella Golf course with great gusto to help George achieve his dream. Sadly this did not happen as his players scores were just below the Vice captains, in actual fact were well below what was needed for the win.

However the real winner on the day was the charity who benefited to the sum of 775 euros which was raised from a raffle, donations from members and golf courses, and a special mention to Mal who knitted over 80 poppy's which were sold and worn by our members as you can see from the picture, well done Mal. Back at O'Brien's where we enjoyed some nibbles the auction and raffle took place and where we raised this incredible amount of money, the celebrations continued on, during which the football cards were won by Alex Bolton and Keith Markham. Our fun/ bounce game was at Font Del Llopp and was also a huge birthday celebration for one of our oldest members Jim McCarthy who reached the ripe old age of 80 and still playing golf quite well, what an achievement, sadly he was not in the winning team this week but as you can see from the picture he was well looked after and had a great day.

"Following the inauguration of the Torrevieja Pool League, with seven teams in the first year, yearon-year it has grown," said Alan.

Alan, 56, proprietor of Construction company AA Building Contractors, is aided by Jez Wood from the Britannia Bar, who compiles all the league tables and Torrevieja Pool League Commitee members Mick Flory from the Sports Bar and Django from Iglesias.

On Saturday the Provincial team were guests of San Luis.

The Provincial matches are always played as ladies or mens fours. With 3 teams of each being played.

There were some close matches but the Provincial came out with 4 wins to San Luis 2, shots 114-83.

San Luis 2 winning teams were William Holtham, Steve Rossiter, Bill Webb & Neil Morrison and Shirley Verity, Ann Holland, Pam Lockett & Jo Pering.

SMGS at Font de Llop A beautiful day and a course in excellent condition greeted the 38 members and 8 accompanying guests making the trip to Font de Llop. Some complications over green fee arrangements led to a few Committee Members, and pro-shop staff, getting some unnecessary stress before play commenced. In the end, though, all was resolved amicably.

Set up pretty short, with some work still going on to recover areas affected by recent heavy rains as well as general maintenance, some high scores were expected. However, prize-winning scoring across all categories was pretty even (and average)with only Dave Alderdice amongst the members taking full advantage, beating his nearest rival for maximum Order of Merit points by a mere cinco puntos. Well played Dave!! Peter Devlin, a regular visitor, also beat his handicap. Another visitor, Ray Waite, almost had a holein-one on the across-the-water par-three 12th , missing by a mere 6 inches.

When you consider that before Sunday’s match, 2nd placed Villajoyosa had not lost a game, whilst Thader had not gained a point at home this season, then you would have got long odds on Thader reversing the trend.

By Andrew Atkinson RUSSELL Moore has met a netful of football stars during a career as Commercial and GM at Tamworth FC, GM at Kidderminster and Commercial Manager at Lincoln City.

"My love of football began in the 60s, when my dad took me to watch an FA Cup tie between Tamworth FC and Torquay, aged 8.

"The unthinkable happened - Tamworth won 2-1. I got the bug for football," Russell told me.

"As a boy my dad took me to watch Man United, at the time greats, including Bobby Charlton, George Best and Denis Law played," said Tamworth born Russell, who lives in Los Montesinos.

Former steel erector Russell entered football as a profession, when appointed Commercial Manager at Tamworth FC in 1999.

"My salary dropped by 50%, from earnings as a steel erector."

"It was strange, going from a fan on the terraces, wearing the scarf, to that of wearing a suit," said Russell.

"I had fantastic years at Tamworth FC. Promoted to the Nationwide Conference. Gary Mills was appointed manager and transformed the club," said Russell.

"Former Nottingham Forest player Gary was under Brian Clough, when they won the European Cup in 1979 and 1980," said Russell.

"Tamworth FC reached the FA Trophy Final, played at Villa Park in 2003, against Burscough, managed by ex-Aston Villa star Sean Teal.

"Gary Mills is my best friend in football," said Russell, proprietor of 'Tidy Gardens For You', in Los Montesinos.

Russell, who met Paul Gascoigne in Quesada in the summer, said: "I had the dream job - and met all my heroes!".
