Nearly 100 people demonstrated in front front of the Playa Flamenca Post Of fice on Satur day mor ning to pr otest against the withdrawal of home postal deliveries in five Orihuela Costa urban izations.

The Orihuela Costa is not unique in this situation, as it has been happening in various places across Spain, seen by many as in readiness for the privatisation of the service by the Spanish central government.

the protest, with the acting mayor, Antonio Zapata of the PSOE, Martina Scheurer from the Los Verdes green party and Bob Houliston from the coastal orientated C.L.A.R.O. party standing side by side in support of the residents.

With inclement weather aplenty, every nationality seemed represented at the protest, many, according to a statement from C.L.A.R.O., who “turned up spontaneously, such is the strength of feeling against this arbitrary and unjustified measure”. The protest spread beyond the neighbours affected in the coastal zone, with many residents from Orihuela’s surrounding villages also taking part.

Acting Mayor of Orihuela, Antonio Zapata, said that he had come to show solidarity with the people affected by the measure: they pay taxes like anybody else and have the right to quality services. He recalled that, at the initiative of C.L.A.R.O. Councillor, Bob Houliston and Martina Scheurer, Councillor for the Coast, the Town Hall of Orihuela has taken legal action against the Post Office in an effort to get the measure reversed. It is however not expected that the courts will look favourably on the case, as preventative action has already been overruled in other locations in Spain, with other courts ruling in favour of the closure.

“There is no justified reason for curtailing home deliveries in an integrated urban area like Orihuela Costa which is a city in itself with 35,000 registered residents, equal to the population of Orihuela city”, the C.L.A.R.O. statement continued, but recent plans to change the “general plan” of the municipality to formally recognised the Orihuela Costa as a single urban zone, a status it currently does not have, were blocked. That classification could have also made it easier to prevent the action continuing, as it is believed that whilst the post office currently see those homes affected as individual locations, the reallocation of the area could have forced them to change policy in favour of the residents who

Martina Scheurer told The Leader, “Antonio Zapata confirmed that the town hall is supporting this demonstration and is on Court against Correo. I spoke with different citizens and agreed with the president of the La Regia neighbourhood association to arrange an appointment in situ to see where community letter boxes could be installed. This is a first step to find a solution meanwhile the matter is on Court”.

Scheurer also pointed out that “the proposal of a new General Building Plan does consider Orihuela Costa as a ‘nucleo urbano consolidado’ (Consolidated urban center) but unfortunately the PP used their majority in the Pleno of last month to object that this first proposal”.

The C.L.A.R.O. statement makes it clear that the “strong demonstration of opposition to the decision to curtail home delivery of mail in Campoamor, Cabo Roig, La Regia and La Zenia that this measure is considered unacceptable”. Pointing out that the need for possibly thousands of residents to go weekly to the Playa Flamenca post office to collect their mail before it is returned to the central post office is causing considerable inconvenience. “For those who are not mobile it is a serious problem. For those who are frequently away from their homes, the situation is extremely worrying since the fate of their mail will be totally unknown. It is clear from the popular reaction shown at the demonstration that this discriminatory measure will not be accepted”.

RECORD 45.4 MILLION TOURISTS VISIT SPAIN

Data released by FRONTUR, the Inbound Tourism Survey drafted by the General Sub-directorate of Tourism Information and Studies of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, a record 45.5 million tourists have visited Spain so far this year, an increase of 3 million on the same period of last year.

In the period between January and August, the United Kingdom, Germany and France have been the most important markets. In relative terms, all autonomous regions posted year-onyear growth, withthe highest increases being recorded on the Canary Islands, up by 11.9%, and the Region of Madrid, an increase of 8.8%.

August broke all records with, for the first time ever in a single month, 9,070,024 inbound tourists visited the country in a single month, representing a year-on-year increase of 8.8% and a new all-time record in the FRONTUR figures.

In August, the United Kingdom maintained its position as top emitting market for tourists visiting Spain, with 2,136,879 tourists; France was second, with 1,981,643 tourists; and Germany was third, with 1,290,777 tourists. The United States (with an increase of 35.4%), Portugal (with an increase of 24.4%) and Italy (with an increase of 15.5%), were the emitting markets posting the highest growth rates.

The United Kingdom maintained its position as top emitting market in August, with 2,136,879 tourists representing an increase of 5.8%, and accounting for 23.6% of all inbound tourists. British tourists mostly travelled to the Balearic Islands and, to a lesser extent, the Canary Islands, Andalusia, Catalonia, the Region of Valencia and the Region of Madrid. The United Kingdom also holds the top spot in the figures on the period January-August, in which time

10,584,155 British tourists visited Spain, an increase of 5.6%.

Representing the second emitting market in the month, 1,981,643 French tourists visited Spain in August, accounting for 21.8% of the total, with an increase of 9.4%. French tourists mainly chose to visit Catalonia, but a significant number also visited the Region of Madrid, the Basque Country and Castile Leon. France accounted for 16.8% of all inbound tourists between January and August, with 7,633,543 tourists, with an increase of 10.4%.

Accounting for 14.2% of the total in August, 1,290,777 German tourists visited Spain, a significant increase of 11.8%.

In August, Catalonia was the top destination autonomous region with 2,411,942 tourists, 26.6% of the total and an increase of 7.5%. The majority of tourists visiting Catalonia came from France and Italy. Between January and August, 11,693,055 tourists visited Catalonia - accounting for 25.8% of the total and an increase of 6.1%.

As for Valencia, during the January to August period, a total of 4,414,201 inbound tourists visited the region, an increase of 5.1% and 9.7% of the total. In August alone, 919,142 tourists visited, accounting for 10.1% of the total and an increase of 8.1%. The region's top emitting markets were Germany, Portugal, France, Russia and Belgium. However, the top emitting market, the United Kingdom, actually posted a decline.

FLOOD REACTION DRILL HAS REAL WEATHER CONDITIONS

special operation of flood reaction was launched by the government of Valencia last week, whilst an emergency preparation exercise was being conducted across the Vega Baja.

The simulation began with a statement issued by the Emergency Coordination Centre, warning of the risk of heavy rain, after a real “orange” alert was issued by the meteorological office for a risk of flooding across Alicante.

The plan was then implemented to monitor and track the weather conditions, issuing notices to affected municipalities and deploying resources to deal with the potential hazards created by the risk.

The measure is intended to ensure “prompt, effective and coordinated” action of public and private resources in emergency flood situations, and minimize the consequences, hence the importance of participating in drills where it implements the provisions of the protocol actions, a source stated.

During the drill, when the area was coincidentally hit by the biggest rainfall of the year so far, the monitoring continued along the Rio Segura, with the drill declaring emergencies in Rojales, and then

Guardamar del Segura. As a result of the hypothetical damage caused, the militarised emergency services, the UME, were dispatched, along with other teams from a variety of emergency services.

The Cruz Roja were also involved and wanted to highlight their contribution. With thirty volunteers and a variety of equipment, they participated in the rescue exercise during the Rojales emergency, with first responders and search and rescue teams deployed to rescue flood victims.

The Cruz Roja has been active in the three provinces of Valencia sine 2012 responding to flood and weather related risks, as well as the cleanup operations immediately afterwards. Primarily focussing on response and rescue, and then caring for the elderly after an incident, their aim is to return those affected to “normal living conditions” as soon as possible.

As well as their International operations, locally, the Cruz Roja also provide hostel care in the event of an emergency, psychological support, healthcare, immigrant care and have some 2,500 volunteers ready to respond in the region, trained, prepared and ready to face any emergency that evolves.

VALENCIA TO FUND FOUR SCHOOL PROJECTS

The President of the region of Valencia, Alberto Fabra, has said that there will be funding for building work on four schools in the area in election year of 2015.

Specifically, Torrevieja, Rojales, San Fulgencio and Guardamar del Segura will benefit from the investment, although there was no mention of Orihuela.

In Torrevieja, the construction of a new canteen at the Colegio Inmaculada will be completed, as well as the Colegio Amanecer, which has been operating out of portacabins since 2005. Rojales will benefit from work at the Colegio Príncipe de España, which has seen cracks in the main walls appear for some years, attributed to the age of the building at around 50 years old. Portacabins at the Colegio Público Dama de Guardamar will be set for replacement with a real brick building, The mayor of Guardamar, Carmen Verdú of the PP, said in response that “we can only thank the efforts of the Government to include Guardamar amongst its priorities”, realising local demand in supporting the local PP government who has worked for three years since the last elections without achsiving any such promises.

MAJOR IMPROVE MENTS PLANNED FOR THEATRE Plans have been approved for major improvement work to be carried out in the Municipal Theatre in Torrevieja, although the town hall are denying that the work has anything to do with the fact that the building has been operating illegally and without required building permits and authorisations since it opened eight years ago.

LAND PRICE INCREASING The average price for urban land in Spain is showing signs of recovery, as quarter 2 of 2014 showed a 9.3% lower price than the same period of last year, but a 3.5% increase in price compared to the first quarter of 2014, as low prices have started to attract buyers once again, according to the Ministry of Public Works.

RETURN OF ENGLISH CONVERSATION CLASSES Rosario Martínez Chazarra, the Councillor for Youth has announced the resumption of the English conversation classes at the Center for Information and Youth (CIAJ).

The classes first got underway in 2012 and have proved so popular that hundreds of people have been able to improve their English language skills through the activity.

The current sessions will run through to June 2015 and will mainly consist of oral practice with a group of between 15 and 25 British volunteers.

As well as the improvement of language skills by both groups the meetings also help to promote social relationships as a means of coexistence and integration among the citizens of Torrevieja.

The councilor announced that the groups are currently being held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, from 10:00 to 12:00 and on Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 17:00 to 18:00 pm. The venue is the Center for Information and Youth (CIAJ). Martínez said that the activity is completely free and open to people of all ages.

The construction of the theatre was budgeted as 6.4 million euro, although the final cost was actually 9.6 million, according to the information provided by the Los Verdes green party, and now included plans to change some of the characteristics which would fall more in line with the legal requirements for the building.

In August of the year we reported how the Ministry of the Interior and Justice may close down both Torrevieja´s municipal theatre, and the musical auditorium, “if it meets its obligation” on account of the buildings “lacking the mandatory licenses for opening and activities”. At that time, the Los Verdes stated that “eight years after its inauguration and opening to the public, it remains in a state of absolute illegality, in case of disaster, it will greatly exacerbate the negative consequences that follow”.

Concerns were raised after minimum safety requirements were apparently not met, including the evacuation and emergency elements. In early 2013, we also reported how a license application “was made towards the end of last year, but was refused in the middle of January, as the building failed to meet certain elements of safety and function that would allow performances to take place”.

There were issues with the capacity, fire extinguishers, fire exits and the registered capacity, amongst other elements, for which the Ministry of Interior reported unfavourable records considering that the building did not meet legislation for public entertainment.

The councillor for culture, Luis María Pizana of the PP, said this week that the project to start work, including adapting a storage area on the upper floor for use as a rehearsal room, as per the original plans, “has nothing to do with what it could be processed at the time of licensing”.

Spanish power supply and construction company Abengoa has secured a 26 million dollar contract from the Kuwait government to develop a new power transmission project. In a statement, the company said that the project includes designing, building and operating three new high-tension electricity transmission lines which extend for 86 kilometres in the Kuwaiti capital. Abengoa is currently involved 25,000 kilometres of power transmission and distribution lines around the world.

FUEL THE FIRE Despite continual threats of its withdrawal, the UK government have revealed that the number of people claiming the winter fuel allowance whilst living abroad has risen to record levels. The data reveals that a total of 139,000 people were paid the social benefit for last winter, compared to 75,000 in the 2011 to 2012 winter period. The number people in Spain who claimed the allowance in 2011 was 33,800, rising to 49,900 last winter. Apart from the apparently high figure, the government claim that it is only a small proportion of those who are eligible, with government officials estimating some 456,000 expats would have been eligible in the winter of 2012.

BACK TAXES The European Court of Justice has ruled that the Spanish authorities cannot charge different rates of inheritance tax for residents and non-residents and the verdict could open the floodgate to thousands of Britons reclaiming their tax. So far the Spanish authorities have not responded to the ruling.

ORIHUELA PSOE LOOKS TO FUTURE The acting mayor of Orihuela, Antonio Zapata of the PSOE, has announced that he will not stand as a candidate in the primaries for the May elections.

In a statement, Zapata said, “I have to be consistent and I will not engage in a process with which I do not agree”, thus leaving the three remaining candidates to battle for the lead on an equal footing.

The PSOE members hoping to lead their party to victory are Carolina Gracia, who is the current spokesperson for the local group, along with Ana Mas and Paco Escudero.

Meanwhile, Carolina Gracia has taken her own lead already, launching a personal website in which she details the content in which she will fight the campaign, in the hope of becoming the next, and the first elected PSOE mayor of the municipality.

Monsignor Murgui has been in the Vatican City for the last few days where he has attended the International Meeting 'The pastoral project Evangelii Gaudium', an event organized by the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization.

The diocesan delegation was headed by the bishop himself, who made the journey with three priests and four laymen all from the Orihuela-Alicante Diocese.

As calls for the former President of Castellón, Carlos Fabra, to enter prison for his crimes are reinforced, a situation he is currently avoiding pending his plea for clemency on account of his political position, the situation faced by one politician who is imprisoned has been highlighted.

Having been found guilty of corruption by every stage of the judicial process, former mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Ángel Hernández Mateo, finally entered prison a month and a half to go. But, whilst those of us who have not experience the reality of prison life may only have the televised images to relate to, the reality of what this prisoner has to endure is far from a life of hardship and deprivation, but is one of privilege and seemingly calm composure.

Passengers using the Alicante tram network have contributed to saving the equivalent CO2 emissions of nearly 60 million private cars.

A statement by operator FGV promotes the environmental advantages of using public transport, which also saves some 35.9 million litres of fuel, valued at almost 49 million euro, if those travellers were to use their cars, and an emission saving of 57,148 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere.

Specifically, the service provided by Metrovalencia last year avoided 49.9 million journeys by private vehicles, meaning a 45,984 tonne saving of CO2 emission. Meanwhile, the service provided by the TRAM Metropolitano de Alicante avoided 6.1 million private vehicle movements in 2013, which in turn prevented the emission of 11,483 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Women in Rojales are being encouraged to attend Council workshops which are aimed at developing their skills and crafts and putting them into business ideas. The courses will last for twenty hours and encourage the women to earn a living through their hobbies and skills. They will be held at the council offices in Rojales from 16 October.

Becoming the temporary home to a wide range of historical exhibitions, Alicante is now commemorating the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, through a series of images and relics denoting one of the most iconic struggles to victory in our recent times.

The exhibition “Berlin: Die Mauer” can be visited at the FNAC store in Alicante, frequent home to a variety of exhibitions, located in the shopping centre near to the main train station.

There are a total of 25 images from different German and American state archives depicting the history of the wall since the beginning of its construction in 1961, until its destruction in November 1989, and final decommissioning in 1990.

Emotive in every way, from the images of the border guards and tanks of the Cold War, to the real

tragedy of harrowing scenes of those separated by the wall being reunited after a quarter of a century apart.

Described as offering the viewer the chance to “witness a story of freedom and hope” across generation to generation, exhibition director, Clemente Corona, explained that “Berlin: Die Mauer tells how the human will can change the course of history and break the established script”.

The exhibition has already toured the cities of Bilbao, Barcelona and Murcia and, after Alicante, will head to Madrid and San Sebastián. It is free to visit and will be at the FNAC store until October the 25th, and is well worth a visit to see the real stories of those who lived and worked through a symbol of separation and hope, that evolved into freedom and peace.

ONE IN FOUR BOAT SKIPPERS FINED During the course of the summer, the Guardia Civil has intensified spot checks on small pleasure boats around the Alicante province, and found almost a quarter of those checked committed legal infringements and were liable to a fine.

The checks have been conducted across the country, but as Alicante is one of the key locations for sum-

mer sailors, there were more checks in this province, along with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Cádiz and Málaga.

Across Alicante, some 4,427 vessels were inspected, of which 1,004 were found to be committing some form of infringement, mainly due to deficiencies or lack of insurance policy, certificate of seaworthiness and the qualification certification of the skipper.

Educational and awareness visits were also made to businesses engaged in sailing activities, mostly to offer advice on correct procedure and compliance.

The Guardia Civil, who conducted the checks with the provincial maritime service, said that the checks are designed to improve the safety of users of these vessels, and the bathers and people visiting the Spanish coast in the summer.

During the latest activity launched by the Guardia Civil and DGT against speeding motorists, the figure was 3.4% of drivers checked finding themselves reported for not complying with speed limits, so the near 25% rate of offences in the boating sector is highlighted as a significant cause for concern.

RENFE BUYING 40 NEW TRAINS The Minister for Public Works, Ana Pastor, has announced that Spanish train operator RENFE are planning to purchase forty new trains between now and 2018, thirty of which will be high speed models.

According to a statement from the ministry, the aim of the investment is to “improve the mobility of citizens” allowing them to “move better, safely and in a shorter time”.

RENFE is currently drafting public tender documents for the allocation of the orders, which were detailed during the InnoTrans international railway trade fair held in Berlin this week.

Track management company ADIF already announced plans for an additional 1,000 kilometres of high speed track during 2015, reaching areas such as Zamora, Burgos, León and Palencia, as well as Cádiz and Murcia.

During a speech at InnoTrans, Pastor noted that Spain already has the second largest network of high speed railway in the world behind China, with a network of over 3,000 kilometres, and “we are working to have a train of high performance of the century, reaching many more places in Spain in 2018”, she added.

Benidorm´s Terra Natura animal park has been raising awareness over the plight of endangered rhinos, coinciding with International Rhinoceros Day. In addition to endangered status of the Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), there are four other species which are in a critical situation. In Sumatra and Java, the populations of these animals are extremely low and it is estimated that only 100 remain in Sumatra and just 45 in Java. The park itself is home to four Indian rhinos It is estimated that the population of this species was about 200 copies in India and Nepal in 1900, conservation programs have allowed the species to recover to over 2,500 individuals since 2007. The main threat Rhino is human activity; hence very few animals survive outside protected areas.

NO COMMENT Defense Minister, Pedro Morené, refused to answer questions from PNV deputy Joseba Agirretxea on Wednesday, who had demanded an explanation in Congress on the recent find of 127 kilos of cocaine on board the Navy training ship, Juan Sebastián Elcano. Morené refused to answer the question on the grounds that the case is subject to a “gagging” order, as it is still under investigation.

MORE BIKES LESS SPEED orrevieja played host to the third edition of a road safety conference this week, in which the attention was given to hopes for more cycles on the roads and less speed, Along with the Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, the event was atended by the Ministry of the interior´s sub delegate Luis Aguilera, regional secretary Asunción Quinzá, and the director general of traffic, María Seguí Gómez, Whilst detailing the need to adapt traffic policy to meet the needs of the modern road user, Luis Aguilera said that the General Traffic Regulations requires “deep reform”, whilst detailing how, in early 2015, is expected that the new 30 kilometre per hour speed limit on urban roads is likely to come into force, lowered to 20 kilometre per hour in the case of pedestrian areas, but will remain at 50 kilometres per hour maximum speed in the case of streets that have more than one lane in each direction.

In the new regulations, bicycles have a greater presence and their right to driving on the road is established, taking consideration of vehicles, to avoid frequent points of conflict between cyclists and pedestrians travelling along the pavement. This, together with the reduced speed limit, is the focus on promoting the use of bicycles as a sustainable mode of transport within the action plans of the DGT and the government to reduce CO2 emissions.

Torrevieja has already inaugurated a number of routes that mix cycles with the normal traffic flow.

Although the “cycle streets” have caused confusion with a number of road users, the routes are indicated by special signs which feature a pictogram of a bicycle, but the most prominent change in use on these roads is that the bicycle has

priority over other vehicles.

Around 400 people from different sectors of industry attended the conference held in the municipal theatre, all keen to meet with the traffic policy makers and learn the real implications of the policy change.

There was also a detailed discussion on a number of grants available from the European Union which are available to subsidise a variety of road based projects.

The deputy of the government of Valencia, Serafín Castellano, also attended the closing event of the conference, along with the DGT.

Buying or Renting?

The World recession has changed attitudes to many issues. For expats intending to start a new life in Spain, the option of buying a home before the recession, possibly with a cheap Spanish mortgage was always a tempting one. Good value properties were readily and cheaply available, and mortgages were never too much of a problem to obtain, particularly if you had the right contacts.

Of course, this was part of the problem, as Spain and other Mediterranean countries have since found out. As a result, many expat properties are often difficult to sell, many are in negative equity and mortgage foreclosures are a common occurrence, with many expats returning to their countries of origin, bitter and dejected.

One of the questions that I am frequently asked by intending expats is “Should I buy or rent a home in Spain?” Many would-be expats have listened to horror stories from returning expats, or read in one of the Brit tabloids about the “horrors of buying a home in Spain” that advise not to buy. “Never buy, always rent” has become the current mantra for some people, and voiced particularly loudly by expats who still have a property to sell. However, this is not always the best advice for the intending expat, and I would caution against taking such advice too seriously.

A high percentage of emails that I receive from expats relates to circumstances where things have gone badly wrong in the rental market.

Short-term rentals now seem to be the order of the day and if you decide to rent, be prepared to move frequently. Many landlords are speculative and only want to rent out properties during the ‘off peak’ season and like to move tenants on in time to make higher rentals during the main holiday period. Neither do landlords currently like tenants to feel too ‘comfortable’. Many have been badly bitten during the

financial crisis with unpaid rents and xx are cautiously against allowing longterm tenancies. Many expats do not speak the language fluently enough to check the conditions of their tenancy agreements, which should always be checked by a competent and reliable Spanish lawyer; however, select one who can advise you in your own language.

Of course, much depends upon personal circumstances, including whether or not you have the capital or mortgage capability to buy a home in Spain; if not, renting is the only available option. Maybe you are retired, have a home in the UK and intend to return in the future, in which case renting maybe the best idea. However, if you intend to make a commitment to your new country and are prepared to accept the advantages, as well as the challenges, then buying a home would always be my preferred option. There is nothing quite like owning your own home, albeit with the help of a mortgage. However, this is on the basis that you do your homework thoroughly first.

If you intend to buy, my advice would be to live in rented accommodation in an area where you plan to buy for a year or two. This is to ensure that you actually like the location, as well as giving you plenty of time to look for available properties in an area that you intend to make your permanent home. Look for bargains, bank forced sales, as well as talking to neighbours and friends. By all means, check out the local estate agents as a good source of information but in most cases, it is the locals who know about the best local deals.

Whatever the cynics say, it is still relatively easy to obtain a bank mortgage in Spain, particularly if you are working. Speak to several banks, lawyers, developers and people that you know. Remember, that it is still often a case of ‘who’ you know and not ‘what’ you know in Spain. When the time comes to buy, look for a reputable Spanish lawyer. Make sure it is someone well known and recommended to you by friends and neighbours.

If you do decide to buy a property, make sure it is for the right reasons.

Before the financial crisis, I knew of many expats who would buy properties for a ‘song’, often on unregistered land, hoping to make a

large profit when it came to sell the property several months on. Many such speculators were caught out, and this is why so many expats are currently bitterly against purchasing properties in Spain. Don’t let their greed put you off. Remember that you are primarily buying a home and it shouldn't matter too much if its value rises or falls, particularly in the short term.

If you still have a property in the UK, lucky you, because it should provide you with some spare cash to get the new home that you are really looking for. However, don't keep your old home just in case you wish to return. If you are moving on a temporary flight of fancy, then it may be wise to keep it for a few months. However, if you are aiming for a permanent life in a new country, my best advice is to cut the umbilical chord, and move on. If you should return at a later date, so many things will have changed, that you probably won’t like your old home and neighbours anyway! It is always best to move on and never to look back. I have known many expats to fret so much about their old home, which is either left empty or let to strangers, that they are never able to let go and move on, and enjoy the real purpose of their new lives in the sun.

Filling Hearts JB BRASS BAND with Hope Following the disaster in the Philippines when Typhoon Haiyan struck last year, local singer and songwriter Shani Ormiston was so moved by the trauma and suffering of the Philippino people, broadcast globally by the media, that she felt that she had to do something tangible for those most in need.

Shani, who lives in Torrevieja composed a song entitled "Fill a Heart With Hope" and with the collaboration of producer Manuel Ortega, produced a CD which was made available on CDBaby and iTunes to download for only 99 cents. It was Shanis' wish that all monies from the sale of the CD would go directly to help the people of the Philippines.

Shani contacted the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club to ask that they handle all proceeds from the CD, in the knowledge that The Lions Club ensure that every single cent raised is used to help those most in need at the point of delivery.

Last week Shani came back to the Lions Club and Lion President Iain Bennett was delighted to receive the sum of 330.00 euros which is now on its way to the Philippines.

This donation brings the total raised by the Torrevieja Costa Lions appeal for the Philippines to 12,120.00 US Dollars.

JB Brass Band have returned from their summer break to begin rehearsals for three important concerts.

The band, based in San Miguel and made up of local Expats and regular visitors from UK, began rehearsals in 38 degree heat to prepare for two 'Last Night of the Proms' style concerts in association with The Lions. The first is at the Union de Musical Theatre, in San Miguel on Thursday 9th October at 8.30pm. Tickets are 3 euros and are available from the Book Shop in San Miguel or any band member.

The second concert is provisionally at Rojales Theatre on 25th October (date and time still tbc) Both concerts will include a musical trip around Great Britain through popular music as well as some staple Last Night of the Prom favourites, Land of Hope and Glory, Sailor's Hornpipe and Nymrod.

A further concert in Theatre Municipal, Torrevieja

on 11th October at 8.30pm. The band are to share this concert with Union Musical Torrevejense and are honoured to be invited to take part in this high profile concert with one of Torrevieja's finest Bands. Tickets are free and a limited number are available from any band member.

The bands MD Dr Ian K Tinsley added 'The band are working extremely well under such difficult conditions to produce a new programme of material for these concerts and I look forward to our 20142015 series of engagements.'

TRIAN, THE NEW ENTREPRENEUR Whilst most of her peers were enjoying the beach or the pool, Trian Johnson Smith was busy making loom bracelets.

The idea was to sell them to friends and clients of her parents dental practice, Carredent.

Some were a mixture of colours, some were different designs and some even had a small token attached. All were on sale for 1 or two euros, and all were in memory of her dearly loved Grandma who suffered with Alzheimer’s disease and passed away just two years ago.

Trian, who is just 12 years old, raised the magnificent sum of 123.96€ in just 4 months. Judy Ferris gratefully accepted this donation on behalf of the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association, inviting Trian and her mum Alison to visit the Day Centre in Avenida Estacion Torrevieja to see for themselves just how such fund raising benefits the patients cared for at the Day Centre. Also there is support for the carers and families undertaken by the staff who understand all too well how needed this support is.

GO FOR THROTTLE UP In association with computer giant Hewlett-Packard, the Sant Joan de Deu hospital in Barcelona has converted its MRI scan room for children into a spaceship, albeit only in an aesthetic way, in order to cause less stress to young patient using the diagnostic equipment. “We wanted to make the children believe they were part of the crew preparing to enter a spaceship”, according to HP spokeswoman Eva Blanco, whilst the equipment has successfully reduced anesthesia use by 18% during MRI scans.

THE SILENT KILLER Eight out of every ten women in Spain who suffer ovarian cancer are diagnosed too late, according to a report collated on behalf of three oncology institutes, the IVO, ASACO and SEOM, who released the data in the hope of raising awareness of ovarian cancer among doctors, given that around 4,100 women are diagnosed with it every year in Spain and few survive. In Spain, a total of 12,300 women are annually diagnosed with some form of gynaecological cancer, the second most common strain of the illness in women.

The first story, What Will Survive, revolves around a young woman found buried alive and her connections to a man, his autistic son and a family that seem to have silenced the town. We also see Banks’ life turned upside down by tragic events in his own family.

If that´s not enough police-themed drama, ITV have also announced another four stories from Lewis.

Actress Penelope Keith will travel through some of the most spectacular landscapes of Britain, reflecting on its rural life through the stories and experiences of the communities she meets, in a new three part series of hour long episodes for More 4, where she aims to discover whether Britain’s much-cherished villages are thriving or struggling to survive under the pressures of the 21st century.

Channel 4 will take us behind the scenes in a new series following officers at Luton Police Station as they respond to 999 calls and arrest suspects, witnessing the relentless traffic through the police custody cells, round the clock. “24 Hours in Police Custody” will show the station works under the

constant pressure dictated by time restrictions which mean that most prisoners can only be kept against their will for a maximum of 24 hours.

Star of Fifty Shades of Grey, hunky Jamie Dornan, returns to the TV screens alongside Gillian Anderson, as The Fall is back in October for a second series. The first helping of the drama saw sinister plot twists a plenty, during the hunt for a brutal killer. Series 2 also sees former Merlin star Colin Morgan in a lead role, playing DS Tom Anderson.

Next is the penultimate technical challenge, which sees the bakers make layers of a different kind. The German schichttorte is a cake cooked in stages under the grill to create 20 layers of different-coloured sponge. It is based upon the German baumkuchen which is baked on a rotisserie and is one of the trickiest German cakes. The showstopper challenge raises the bar even higher. The final four bakers must bake nonstop to create two elegant entremets. They are asked to show as many skills and techniques as they can possibly pack in - this is their last chance to fight for their place in the final.

Succession, it was completed between 1705 and 1722 and designed by Sir John Vanbrugh. For centuries it was a miniature kingdom, but the First World War ripped apart the lives of everyone at Blenheim, the family and those that relied upon them for employment. Below stairs he discovers tales of heroism and tragedy, and above the accounts of those who seized their chance to change the course of history. QUARTER TWO RESTRICTION OF UK PROPERTY SALES GROWTH PERSONAL TAX ALLOWANCE Figures released this week by the Ministry of Development reveal that Valencia is in third place in terms of property sales in the second quarter of the year, second only to Madrid and Barcelona, with Torrevieja once again making the top list.

In Valencia, there were 1,633 housing transactions in the second quarter of the year, whereas Madrid saw 6,705, and Barcelona registered 3,395. The list then continued to show how there had been 1,293 in Sevilla, Zaragoza registered 1,286 unit sales, and then Torrevieja with 1,216 homes sold, just ahead of Marbella with a recorded 1,165 sales.

Nationally, home sales up 12.1% in the second quarter compared with the previous year and totalled 91,338 transactions, representing a new record in sales since the same period of 2010.

Purchases and sales of resale homes accounted for 84.3% of the market share between April and June, when 77,042 homes exchanged, the remaining

15.7%, or 14,296 properties, being new builds.

A factor also highlighted by the ministry is that neither sales in the second quarter of this year, or last, are influenced by tax credits.

Moreover, sales to foreign buyers increased once again, reaching a record high of 14,952 home purchases, with the Alicante province, home to Torrevieja, registering the most foreign investments in the country, with 3,993 homes purchased by foreigners between April and June, ahead of MĂĄlaga with 2,222 homes, Barcelona with 1,317, Tenerife saw 987 foreign purchases and Madrid with 933. In addition, foreigners not residing in Spain bought 1,202 houses, registering an increase of 13.7% compared to a year earlier.

In total, the acquisition of homes by foreigners, both resident and non-resident, captured 17.7% of the market share, with a total of 16,154 transactions.

The U.K. Government has produced a Consultation Document relating to Income Tax Allowances which may become law in the Budget of 2015.

I have examined the Consultation document (see first link below) relating to U.K. Ex Pat Pensioners with a number of proposals. I am not a Financial or Tax Advisor but this is how I understand it.

In Paragraph 6.6 it relates to Ex.Pats, being resident in another country and suggests that those who are in receipt of Government style pensions, including those retired from the Health Service, Fire Service, Police Service, Education, Central and Local Government, Prison Service and possibly the Military Service, would still retain their Personal Allowance. If such are resident in another country, i.e. Spain, they may be having their State Pension paid into Spain and dealt separately with under the Spanish Tax System.

However, if this is the intention, why add the Question 6.2.(below) at the end to 6.6? If a question is asked, a response is anticipated. My thoughts are that if there are insufficient responses received will the law come into operation at next years Budget with the exclusion of 6.6, meaning that the Allowance be taken away from those now receiving it?

QUESTION 6.2: Do you agree that retaining the

UK Personal Allowance in respect of the income of non-residents which is by treaty subject exclusively to UK taxation would help mitigate unfair outcomes from a broader policy of restricting non-residents’ entitlement to the UK Personal Allowance?

People are then given the opportunity to send in an e-petition in relation to this.

As this is to my mind quite ambiguous,could I suggest that all concerned complete the e-petition form and send it in as requested? Even if it does not effect you directly, friends or relatives, etc, could you also do the same so that the Government receive as large a number of replies as possible? This will help those who have spent their lives working for the U.K. Government in one way or another and a good many of whom are living on dwindling pensions.

SOCIAL SECURITY LOSES 17,941 FOREIGNERS IN AUGUST The number of foreign contributors to the Spanish Social Security system was down by 17,941 in August, a 1.1% reduction on the previous month, to 1,582,823. The figures were released last week by the Ministry of Employment.

With the drop in August, the number of foreigners paying into the Social Security has now dropped for the second consecutive months after losing 8,913 contributors in July.

Of all immigrants registered at the end of last month, regular employees numbered 1,339,292; those registered as utonomous 238,618; 4,632 are employed in the fishing industry, and 281 as coal miners.

Of all foreign affiliates in the eighth month of the year, 948,396 were from countries outside the EU and the remaining 634 427 people are from EU countries.

La Rioja, Navarra, Cantabria and the Canary Islands are the regions with the largest monthly improvement, with increases of 2.3%, 2.08%, 1.7% and 0.98% respectively, while Castilla-La Mancha (- 6.2%), Murcia (-6%) and Aragón (-3.1%) show the largest declines.

ike a futuristic battleground, a fleet of armed and uncrewed aircraft, or “drones” as they are more commonly know, are set to take to the skies in an attempt to fight back against a form of terrorism that has been plaguing many.

However, this particular war is not against terrorists, or even against uniformed armies from another country, but rather it is the next stage in Valencia´s battle against the mosquito.

The announcement was made by the councillor for public health, Lourdes Bernal, during the presentation for the European Mosquito Control conference will be taking place in Valencia in February.

Bernal said that the use of this equipment is “pioneering” as they have “intelligent surveillance systems” on board, which enables safer control and monitoring of mosquitoes, as well as their destruction.

The use of drones is largely prohibited in Spain, with the exception of by the military, and exceptional applications such as been approved here, with Valencia having been authorised to use drones in the detection and location of standing water.

However, despite the authority having been granted, the aircraft can only be used on municipal land, flying no more than 500 metres from

the operator and that pilot must be aviation trained and certified to fly.

The characteristics of the city, with its wide network of ditches and canals, golf courses, rice fields and the Natural Park of Albufera, make it an ideal home for mosquitoes, who tend to live in areas less easily accessible by ground crews.

Traditionally, the council will treat known areas with chemicals that prevents water synthesize, as well as insecticide, focussing on removing the larvae. The council also deal with other “pests” with their annual use of 90,000 kilos of rat poison injected biscuits, and chemical treatment of some 3,000 palms.

Although often considered a pest by humans, many scientists and ecologists warn of the dangers of eradicating small insects, due to the impact it has on others. The pesticides can enter the water systems and cause direct problems for humans, whereas killing the mosquitoes on mass takes away food for birds, many of whom then leave the area completely, others switch their attention to eating crops to survive.

The lack of birds also plays a part in the potential risk to the delicate eco-systems, which can ultimately affect the entire planet, according to the scientific evidence.

QUESADA GOLF SOCIETY Wednesday 24th September at El Plantio Although we were only 19 strong for this game everyone was in good spirits, although there had been threats of thunder storms, El Plantio had warned us that they had problems with the greens after hollow tining but at the end of the day general opinion was that the greens were not too bad, this was reflected in the scores that came in and there were no thunder storms to contend with only heavy rain, I am not sure what a couple of our members had been up to but they were covered in mud one on her bottom and one on his shoulders!!! there was only 1 division this time so in 1st place Roy Westlake 33pts 2nd place Mike Thomas 30pts on count back 3rd place Norman Lewis 30pts The Roy was won by Ted Hooker who played the most golf, Nearest the pins were won by Eddie Scott hole 9 Ronnie Speirs hole 18 and Norman Lewis hole 12. In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services For this month’s meeting a group of 29 players visited the established course at Bonalba taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

The course had recently been hollow tined and the greens were still recovering BUT we were just glad to avoid the heavy thunderstorm that was forecast.

Today was Captains Day and Andy Jones provided a host of prizes and a bottle of wine for each player.

Thursday, 25 September 2014 – Mar Menor

By Michael Morris, Captain, Alfie’s GS 36 members and guests of Alfie’s GS set out for Mar Menor, our second visit to the resort this year. A totally different weather picture to the corresponding fixture last month, where the sun-cream, sombreros and frozen bottles of water were replaced with waterproofs and umbrellas! Yes, heavy showers were forecast but miraculously hardly a drop fell.

The course itself, tee boxes and fairways in excellent condition, greens, bobbly in places but understandable due to the fact that aeration and top dressing work had recently been carried out and overall ran very well taking this into consideration. However, many of the (numerous) bunkers were in poor condition mainly due to the lack of sand in them and in my opinion and others, attention in these areas would be time well spent.

On to the match and yet again the scoring was on the whole very good.

Very close at the top with count backs having to be used to determine the final places but on top of the pile was Ian Ingledew (21) with 37 stableford points, just pipping Mick Scott (21) into second place.

This week we ventured to the wonderful Ballesteros designed course at Alicante. The day started in ominously dark manner with thunder being heard but thankfully the bad weather lifted and we had a warm and sunny day. the course was in good condition with the greens still showing the signs of their recent maintenance hence putting was not as straightforward as usual. The results on the day were very close at the top of the leader board: Nearest the pin on hole 3 was Graham Haywood Nearest the pin on hole 12 was Stewart Coleman Nearest the par4 2nd in 2 was Paul Taylor Nearest the par 5 10th in 3 was Charlie Rodgers Longest Drive on hole 16 was Dave Somerville.

Winner on 34 points was Dave Somerville Just edging out Tommy Clarke on better back 6 and Charlie Rodgers on better back 9.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY

By Mike Chapman The hot and humid conditions of recent weeks finally broke on Monday causing us to abandon our game with thunder and lightning bringing play to an abrupt halt. This was the first time for several months that we have lost a days play which makes you realise how lucky we are to be living here in Spain.

On Wednesday we played our usual weekly Stableford competition and once again no one was able to beat par with only Roger Tunstall and new member Angie Green equalling par with 36 pts. The scores were as follows: Cat 1. 1st Phil Herrington 34 pts (c/b) 2nd Alan Douglas 34 pts 3rd Olga Douglas 33 pts Cat 2. 1st Roger Tunstall 36 pts (c/b) 2nd Angie Green 36 pts 3rd Brian Humpheyson 35 pts 2's Club: Alan Douglas and Peter Radcliffe We had six guests joining us for the day and the top scorer was Harry Howard scoring 32 pts with Peter Radcliffe second on 30 pts.

On Friday we played a Change Partners competition and the winners with 84 pts were Geoff Biggerstaff, Ron Percival, Mick Brentnall and Dave Pulling. The unlucky runners up with 83 pts were John and Carole Wheeler, Yvonne Phipps and Norman Page.

QUESADA KAREN WHITTAKER SANCHEZ MEMORIAL @ Alicante Golf Wednesday 24th September 2014 With the weather finally cooling down, the new worry was the forecast of Thunderstorms and Lightening. However that did not deter a field of 32 players for the Karen Whittaker Sanchez Memorial, (I am sure Karen played her part keeping the wet stuff away and just sprinkling a little water in the middle of the round), we all set off northbound to Seve Ballesteros designed course of Alicante Golf. As we set out it was apparent that the course was playing short, as most if not all the tees were brought forward to allow maintenance of other teeing grounds. This played into the hands of several players whom received 2 shots on holes, not forgetting the big hitters making their approach shots easier.

John Sanchez provided all the prizes of which a total of 20 were up for grabs, surely everyone fancied their chances of winning something. Prizes included NTP's on all six par 3's, four par 4's and four par 5's, we also had a Longest Drive for Ladies and Men. A prize of a Green Fee for each of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th place was kindly donated by Alicante Golf (Thank you Marife).

We returned to our new home "The Club" Quesada and a big thank you to Marina at The Club for providing a great feast after the game.

27 members arrived at Las Pinaillas (Albacete) and the temperature gauge at the entrance was showing a rather nice 16 degrees and evidence of the wet stuff had fallen the night before and earlier this morning. It did look a bit dark overhead and whilst we had a few drops, in the main the rain did leave us alone.

This is our 4th visit to this cracking track with fairways like an Axminster carpet and where 55 € paid for the coach, green fee, buggy, competition fee and a rather nice 3 course meal. As in the past 3 years, most found the greens difficult to read, not to mention a wee bit on the speedy side and although the course is rather generous in its width, the punishment for straying is very harsh. We certainly don’t have course like this down "our end" of the Costa Blanca.

We always have rules quiz on the coach going to the course and the 5 € entry fee allows us to provide a "thank you" gift to the waiter and the coach driver. The winner of the quiz receives a 9 hole playing lesson with PGA Professional Joe Dean at Campoamor. Today's prize went to Charlie Little.

Charlie had a good day as he also took the Best Guest prize with a good 37 points.

Of the 4 NTP's, only 3 were claimed and the recipients of a sleeve of

Srixon Soft Feels were John Hillier, Norbert Spaniol and Steve Higgins.

Scoring on the day was, as usual here, a little on the low side with only three achieving or bettering their handicap and only one of those were in the Silver Division where it only needed 26 points for the "Belfast Bandit" Ernie Wilson to take 4th spot. New member Pat Long went one point better for 3rd place and John Hillier's 29 points was enough for the runner's up slot. A long way out in front with 37 points was our Polish member, Jack Daroszewski.

The Gold crew fared a little better and it needed 32 points for Steve Higgins take 4th spot and Norbert Spaniol to claim 3rd spot. The runner up spot went to Bill (my handicap is too low) Starkey with a tidy 36 points, but the best score of the day and the overall winner of the presentation box kindly donated by the golf course was Mick Kennedy with 38 points. CLAPTONS GOLF SOCIETY This month’s outing was at Alicante Golf. Everybody arrived in good time and we knew that it was going to be a very hot and long day. The course had informed us that although the greens had been hollow tined, we were not aware that they were still hollow tining the fairways. This made life difficult on some fairways but did not make too much difference at the end of the day. Our eventual winner informed us that he had played no golf in the last three months during his travels around Europe and the UK but whatever he got up too it certainly improved his golf.

Nevertheless the scores showed what the heat can do when playing golf as they were lower than average. Unfortunately we had a poor turnout this month with only 14 members and two guests but having got back to the Clubhouse everybody said how much they had enjoyed their day. After an excellent spaghetti bolognese by Bernie the Chef and hospitality from Chris and his staff at Mono’s the presentations were made and the results are below.

The match on 25th September, Round 4 of the Autumn series, was due to be fished at Beniarres.

But with the lack of water there, which means the fish are suffering from the lack of oxygen, it was decided to go to the Eden canal in Guardamar.

Unfortunately because of the recent rain, the pegs here were under water, so we went to the drain at Mercadona.

The winner on the day was Martin Stratford , second was Jackie Breslin, third Dennis Pick and fourth Derek King.

Because some of our anglers are going on Sunday, to the River Ebro in Cataluña next weeks match is at Nancys. Pegs at 8.00am fishing 9 till 2.

This also means that the Sunday meeting scheduled for October 5th is cancelled.

The next Sunday meeting will be on October19th, with the Committee meeting at 10.30 followed by the General Meeting at 11.00.

The next Quiz night is on October 14th.

SAN LUIS BOWLS CLUB BY SHEILA CAMMACK

By Ron Sheldon Week 3 on 22nd September and quite a bit of movement in the league placings despite the horrendous storms. My Falcons had a good win at The Galleon & moved up 3 places to take the top spot on our own.

For Peter’s home side Harry & Bruce were best with 2 wins while for The Falcons Bill & Sue excelled with 3 wins.

At Catorce, John’s home team eased a win against Mikes Peacocks and moved up 2 places having 2 pairs with 2 wins while for the Peacocks 2 pairs also managed 2 wins each.

Keith’s E&I Merlins went to the Casa Ventura and claimed victory against Richard’s Ospreys to move up 3 places. 2 pairs from each team squeezed 2 wins each.

Dorothy’s Magpies in Izzy’s Bar had a fine win against Brian’s Galea “A” and moved up 2 places having each of their 3 pairs with 2 wins while only Brian & Tom could manage 2 wins for Galea.

Brian’s Jaguars in E&I just moved up 1 place after their close win at home to Les’s Jays. Brian & Ray topped out with their 3 wins for the Jaguars while best for the Jays were Jim & Stewart with 2 wins.

Ayliff’s Galea “A” at home to Jim’s Sharks went to town with a fine win to move up 3 places having Alan & Juliette on 3 wins, leaving Lyn & Jim for the Sharks without a win at all.

Alan’s Mr Smiths Robins were unlucky having 1 of their team called home early on an flood emergency but held in for a tight finish against Steve’s Steakhouse who moved up 1 place with 2 pairs on 2 wins each while Sue & David were best for the Robins with 2 wins.

At Nachos, Mick’s Lo Crispin moved up 3 places & were the other big scorers with their fine win against Terry’s Voles whose pair of Norman & Ken had a zero score while for the Taverners Tony & Dorothy had 3 wins.

The San Luis Line Dancing Team at the Valencian Championships Having been away in the UK for the last 2 weeks, enjoying the sunshine and cooler temperatures we had to come back to Spain to experience real torrential rain! However I've unfortunately missed some news items whilst I've been away. Results from earlier in September: Colin Jackson, June Jones, Colin Lindgren and Keith Jones won the Monte Mar Open, with Kath Reid, Jean & Paul Parkes and Giuseppe Galleli coming 3rd. In the SABA summer K/O competition Colin Jackson & Colin Lindgren beat Pete Bonsor & Bill Pain in the final of the men's pairs. Well done to all San Luis players involved in the semis and finals. Thanks to everyone who helped out with the green clean-up prior to the SABA competition and in particular Colin (where does he find the energy) Jackson who replaced all the mesh netting around the green and continues to look after it all on our behalf.

The Valencian championships are ongoing, information so far; Colin Lindgren & Colin Jackson are both through to the semi finals of the men's singles and Colin Lindgren & Keith Jones are in the men's pairs semi final. Mixed pairs in progress with mixed

trips and rinks to come, good luck to all our players involved.

The nest round of the International league tournament which is kindly promoted by Comunidad the Valencia Federacion de Golf, takes place on the 28th of September at La Marquesa. The format for this tournament is matchplay fourball better ball. All those competing play with their federated handicap adjusted to the slope of the course. The competition has proven to be very competitive with 6 teams playing each other twice. Among the courses that have been visited so far are; Font de Llop, Alenda, Alicante, Villamartin and Villaitana. We will visit Bonalba, Vistabella, Los Colinas and the final round and presentation will be in La Finca. As this is a federated competition the green fees and competition fee is 20euro per player. The leaders San Miguel Golf Society played a very entertaing match against The Celtic Tigers in a

re-arranged fixture with the result decided on the last green in the last match, with the last putt. A draw being the outcome.

CAFE UNO GOLF SOCIETY

On Thursday 25th September Café Uno golf society played at Vistabella golf. A good turn out this week even though it was an earlier start than normal, I think the incentive was the thought of the bacon butties and coffee. Anyway, the golf day started off well with the rain storm apparently circling around us, but just when we thought we had got away with it, the heavens opened and guess what? Yeah we got wet. A few gardening enthusiasts comments were 'We need more rain!' and 'This'll be good for the garden!' They of course were riding inside a nice covered buggy while a few of us walked. However it didn't last too long and the sun came back out and all was well. The damp conditions didn't spoil the scores too much either. Results were as follows:Gold Category.

ROCKET’S GOLF SOCIETY - CAPTAIN’S DAY ALICANTE GOLF – 23rd SEPTEMBER 2014 It was touch and go if we would be able to play the night before our Captains Day as most of us witnessed weather that like a monsoon with thunder, lightning and hailstones.

But Mother nature was good to us as the weather on the day was warm and sunny and the course in really good condition considering the amount water it took, there was for the first few holes “a keep to the cart path” rule.

With 20 members and guests the long trip to Alicante Golf was well worth it and as mentioned the course was in good condition and showed with some very creditable scores.

The reward for winning Captains Day was a month’s golf at Alicante which was won with 35 points by Barney Hickey.

Mr Consistent is Les Yates, he should be nicknamed “Photo” as he is never out of the frame, Malcolm Anderson made a welcome return from Scotland (forgot to ask how he voted but he was smiling) came in second.

ORIHUELA EXPERIENCE TOO MUCH FOR YOUNG TORRY CD TORREVIEJA ..........0 ORIHUELA CF .............2 Neither manager, Galiana nor Garcia Tebar, was underestimating the importance of this derby clash on Sunday evening at the Vicente Garcia with both talking of a victory that would ‘kick start’ their promotion campaign’s in a season that has started rather sluggishly for both of these local sides. Going into this much anticipated fixture Orihuela have played a game less than their hosts and have the slightly better record although a disappointing home draw to Cullera was the best that they could achieve last Sunday. Torrevieja, on the other hand, put in an inspired second half shift at Villarreal to emerge as worthy winners so confidence was high for the Salineros as they went into Sunday evening’s game. Despite the fixture being deemed a ‘Club Day,’ with everybody having to pay, the fans responded by turning up in their droves to what was clearly one of the season’s most attractive games. Of the 1200 spectators that went through the turnstyle, in a country where away support is usually abysmal, an encouraging 200 fans travelled from Orihuela. And after a quiet opening both sets of supporters were rewarded with an open and entertaining first half with opportunities falling evenly to both sides. Orihuela were first to make an impression as Isaac shot wide on 15 mins with the goal at his mercy. This was a real ‘wake up call’ for Torry who were fortunate still to be level. Four minutes later though, it was Dani’s turn to put

the visitors under pressure. We all thought that his effort was destined for the top corner but a late deflection sent his shot just wide. As both teams continued to make chances Rafa needed just the slightest of touches on the half hour mark to steer the ball into an empty net.

Unfortunately he was millimeters short so the scorer wasn’t troubled.

The game then swung Orihuela’s way and it needed a brilliant save from Oscar to keep out Nacho on 37 mins and from his clearance Cristian was sent off down the left wing. He moved infield with only the keeper to beat as we once again drew breath, but only to see his effort sail narrowly wide and to send the teams into the half time interval at 0-0.

The 2nd period saw rather more desire from the visitors which Torry’s young side found difficult to handle. As they moved up into top gear they once again created chances but now the Orihuela back four were tight as the home side found it impossible to make any progress.

Cristian could have opened the scoring on 63 mins but his aim was wayward once again, with one of only a couple of chances that Torry were able to create.

Orihuela though, were not as wasteful, and from a dangerous free kick on 75 mins Urzaiz rose well to power home a header taking the visitors into a lead that had been coming for a while. As Torrevieja huffed and puffed Orihuela stood their ground and apart from a Jorge header they created little further of note. So it came as no surprise when the visitors got their 2nd in the 4th minute of added time with a well worked move that saw Gines steer the ball home.

The win lifts Orihuela into the fringe of the play off places and provides little but concern for CD Torrevieja. .

Next weekend Torry travel to Levante while Orihuela entertain the leaders Paterna at Los Arcos.

ELCHE BEATEN BY LATE NOLITO GOAL Once again Elche were unlucky not to get anything out of this La Liga game played in front of 21,000 at the Estadio Martinez Valero last Friday evening, as they were beaten by a 90th minute goal by RC Celta’s Chilean striker Nolito.

The visitors arrived in the city high on confidence after their recent derby win but Elche really put them to the sword as, certainly during the 2nd period of the game, they controlled long periods, creating by far the better chances. Unfortunately, as was almost their downfall last season, Elche were unable to convert, a problem that continues to haunt manager Fran Escriba during this new campaign.

Although the first half was a fairly dour affair the

game really sprung to life during the second period with both teams creating far more chances with Coro and then Jonathas, both failing to find the target for Elche when presented with good opportunities. But it was an excuisite pass from Krohn-Dehli that gave Nolito the chance to finally break the deadlock and make it 0-1, scoring in his third match on the trot after goals against RC Deportivo de La Coruña and Club Atlético de Madrid.

Next Saturday Elche travel to Almeria.

RUNNING WILD IN SAN MIGUEL

Sunday 21st September saw members of the local running club, Running Wild, take part in their first race of the season in the nearby town of San Miguel de Salinas.

There were races over both 5K and 10K, on a hilly course around the town, and shorter races at the Athletics Track for the younger age groups.

The majority of members took part in the 5K race and took home a number of prizes. Crecia Wilding led the team home in a time of 26.01 for first place in the VETERANA C category. She was joined on the podium by Helen Mitford and Helen McIlwaine to complete a clean sweep for the club. Barbara Bradbury, Shirley Crandon, Susan Pullan, Karen Pemberton, Julia Rushton, Michelle Edwards and Frauke Gerlach all ran creditably to make this an excellent start to the season.

Running Wild only had three representatives in the 10K race with Gerard McGranaghan leading the team home in an excellent time of

40.10 for 11th place overall. He was followed home by Heather Gould and Lin Gossage with the latter finishing second in the VETERANA C category.

After the main races, attention turned to the track and to our younger members. Darcy McGranaghan took part in the 300 metres and her elder sister, Kyra, in the 700 metres and both did themselves, parents and club proud.
