THINGS TO DO THIS AUGUST WEEK As we look towards our cultural guide for this week, we start off with a holiday, the Día de Nuestra Señora de África, a time of celebration for Christians in the Spanish city of Ceuta, in the north African area of Spanish territory, where it is also a local public holiday. Many Christians go to the Plaza de África in Ceuta on August 4, laying flowers in front of the statue of the Our Lady of Africa or outside the church, before a procession on the 5th of August, when the costaleros carry the statue through the streets of the city, as people throw flowers from balconies onto the statue. Fireworks are set off to mark the end of the fair and holiday. Locally, Dolores is celebrating fiesta time with one of the oddest traditions ever during Monday´s event, the "La Caca de la Vaca", in which you buy a ticket which has a number that corresponds to a square on a plot of land. Then, if the cow, who is the star of this event, deposits her “waste” on your plot, you win a prize! There is also a late night music concert on the Monday as a finale to the event. It´s Elche´s turn to celebrate the Moors and Christians fiesta from Wednesday the 7th until the weekend, with all the usual costumed paraded, battles, music and dancing, with various events throughout Beach Volleyball at La Zenia from Friday

Orihuela Costa - 10:30 – Zumba Classes, La Glea Beach, Campamor (Monday to Friday until August 31) Torrevieja - 19:00 - Outlet Fair, Paseo Vista Alegre.

the week, culminating with a full day of events on Sunday, with official speeches, parades, lunch, baptisms and a flower parade, ending with a huge party in the relevant camps. On the Orihuela Costa we have Zumba classes all week, in fact they run right through until the end of August, Monday to Friday at La Glea beach, with the VII Orihuela Costa Cup Beach Volleyball Competition starting on Friday at La Zenia beach, running through until Sunday, offering a delight to many who enjoy partaking in or just watching this energetic sport. Not forgetting those cultural tours of Orihuela City, with a costumed guide showing you around some of the hidden gems of the culture rich location. The outlet fair is still on in Torrevieja, opening at 7 in the evening all week, with a Jazz & Rock concert on Wednesday, Andromeda, at the Teatro Municipal. Sports fans can also enjoy FC Torrevieja playing football against UCAM Murcia CF, at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Wednesday night too. Thursday night is great for adults and kids alike with Veo Veo, The Musical, set to entertain the little ones at the Teatro Municipal, whilst the much anticipated Ali Campbell´s UB 40 will be entertaining the adults at the Eras de la sal. On Saturday, Torrevieja offers music with a Latin flavor as well as a photography exhibition, plus film and storytelling for the children. For a touch of pomp and ceremony, Saturday should be one to look out for with the Coronation of the Queen of the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, at the Plaza de Encarnación Puchol de La Mata. Torre de la Horadada hosts the Fisherman´s market, at their Paseo Marítimo on Thursday, but if traditional markets are something to tickle your fancy, then a trip slightly further afield might be just up your street, as Hondón de las Nieves hosts a rather unusual Roman Market, on Friday the 9th and Saturday the 10th of August, when not only is Cesar himself expected to make an appearance, but also the perhaps better known, at least amongst the younger generations, Asterix and Obelix. Finally, again slightly further afield, you might remember us talking about the Castillitos, at Cabo Tiñoso a few weeks ago, where the old military cannons and buildings are open for us to walk around and enjoy, well the good news is that many people have been voting to put them on the cultural map of Spain, with them now reaching the semi-

finals. Even better news is that the scores will now be reset to zero, which is fortunate considering that the cannons actually got their placing having received 740 votes, whereas the Judería de Hervás rocketing ahead with 3,630 votes. Voting starts again at elmejorrincon.guiarepsol.com, where participants can win free fuel vouchers, before the winner of the cultural contest is announced on September the 13th.
