MINISTRY FAIL TO PROVIDE EXPLANATION FOR SCHOOL DELAYS

Mayor Monseratt Guillen and Rosa Martinez, the Councillor for Education, travelled to Valencia last week for a pre arranged meeting at the headquarters of the Ministry of Education with the Regional Minister Rafael Carbonell. Unfortunately, it would appear that little or no progress was

made with Martinez saying she was deeply upset by the lack of answers that the Minister gave. The meeting was first requested 8 months ago since when it has suffered 2 postponements in February and April. Only two items were on the agenda, the work stoppage at IES Playa Flamenca and the refurbishment of the Virgen del Camino old college who’s students come from Orihuela and Callosa. Martinez emphasized the Continued on Page 2

Work began on the IES Playa Flamenca almost 10 years ago but was abandoned due to the safety of the site which is on unstable ground next to a ravine. In July 2012 the outstanding work was re tendered to a new company, which took over its construction but abandoned the project two months later. She also told him of the prefabricated classrooms in current use by the students which were damaged during an period of severe winds this winter resulting in their closure for a week. She said that, despite the Minister being aware of the meeting for many months he provided the Orihuela party with no explanations or answers. She said that she was ‘very upset and concerned’. In July 2011 Orihuela delivered a proposal to the Ministry for the refurbishment, at a cost of 240,000 euros, of the Virgen del

The then Regional Minister of Education promised to include the work in his 2012 budget and two years on the City Planners are still waiting to sign a collaboration agreement with the Ministry. Carbonell insisted that he was not aware of any such agreement so, despite the announcement in July the Virgen del Camino College will not be finished later this year. "I cannot find an any reassurance from our meeting with the Minster last week who was able to tell us absolutely nothing’ continued Martinez, who now questions the competence of the Regional Ministry of Education. She said that the regional government has not addressed any of their obligations, and as such municipal technicians will now prepare a report on the safety of the settlement of the land at IES Playa Flamenca, which they will discuss with AMPA, the Asociación de Madres y Padres de Alumnos.

REFORM OF SPAIN’S LOCAL AUTHORITIES DRAWS CLOSER

The Council of Ministers has now approved the Draft Law on the Streamlining and Sustainability of Local Authorities, that responds to the principle of "One administration, one power", which will result in an estimated saving of more than 8 billion euros between 2013 and 2015. The measure is now expected to be submitted for Parliamentary approval in the next term. The Minister for the Treasury and Public Administration Services, Cristóbal Montoro, said that the reform of the local authorities, which was first presented on 15 February, "is a pro-municipality reform", that aims to give local councils the role that they deserve but one which "historically they have not been given". The reform will mean reorganising the institutional structure of the State of the Autonomies. "We are correctly defining what local authorities need to do and clarifying their powers established by the statutes of the autonomous regions and the activities and powers of central government" he said. The minister explained that the draft law organises the activities of the public sector and streamlines the services offered. In this respect, it defines the activities that the public administration services must carry out without this preventing them from carrying on other activities "provided they are sustainable in budgetary and financial terms". The minister highlighted the

strengthened role of the provincial councils that will be able to coordinate many of the regular services. The local councils will also be under an obligation to publish the cost of each public service and to decide if services should be joint or concentrated under the umbrella of the provincial council in the event that the latter can offer them "under better conditions at an effectively lower cost". It also incentivises the voluntary merger of municipalities. In this respect, the minister announced that the services of merged municipalities will receive "greater financial support from the State to foster mergers and thus avoid administrative dispersion which is often very costly". The minister said that the new legislation limits the remuneration of political offices and will bring the salaries of public servants that carry out very similar activities into line. "We are driving this reform to continue making cost savings in the offer of public services to our citizens and with a view to fostering economic activity", he said. He added that the government is open "to the greatest possible consensus among the political groups" so that the project can get under way with the broadest possible support base.

UNACCEPTABLE GROWTH IN MUNICIPAL DEBT

According to the Ministry of Economy and Finance, in 2011 the bank debt of the small town of San Miguel de Salinas was just over half a million euros, a figure that represented 12% of the budget. A year later, the debt had risen to 3,174,286 euros, an increase of 539% , now far more than half of the annual budget of the town, 4,648,268 euros, at 63%. The Board of Directors of the local Residents Association 'San Miguel Arcángel' are disgusted with the increase saying that Council spending has now got completely out of control As the rate at which new properties are being built, sold and occupied, has declined they claim that the attitude of the political representatives elected to serve in San Miguel de Salinas has been irresponsible, speculative and wasteful of public resources, resulting in a growing debt that the townsfolk cannot sustain and mortgaging the town’s future. They say that the public is overwhelmed by the mismanagement of these politicians, and as a result of a lack of financial information they now require the municipal corporation to clearly explain where the extra money, ‘Our money’, has been spent. They also demand that members of the public are consulted prior to any future major and that their agreement be obtained as to

how any additional debt is repaid. A spokesman for the Board said that the town cannot spend what it doesn’t have and when the time comes for the mayor and his cronies to move on they will do so without any concerns themselves as the responsibility for repaying the overspend created by their lack of fiscal control will be left in the hands of local taxpayers. They further denounce the fact that during the ‘boom years’ the council was not able to save a single euro in anticipation of any downturn, insufficiency in which could be their undoing. Last week the mayor found himself under increasing pressure from the Association once again to dismiss the councillor for health. It has been more than four months they say, since the councillor, Valero Basilia Zafra, was asked to respond to appeals by the public regarding a lack of doctors in the Centro de Salud where current staff are being expected to treat patient loads that are more than double the national average. They say that she also suffers a conflict of interests arising from her working as an employee in the company that actually runs the health centre. The Association says that it cannot understand why matters of such importance have not provoked a response or statement from the Councillor.

AIRBUS A330 TAKES OVER AMERICA

SPAIN´S FIRST ALL FEMALE HEMS FLIGHT CREW

RYANAIR DENY INFLATING PRICES FOR TRAGEDY VICTIMS

An Iberia Airlines Airbus A330 made her first operational flight from Madrid to Chicago and back this week, meaning that this state of the art jet will fly to most of the airline´s destinations in the USA, including Boston, New York, Miami and Chicago, at 15% more efficiency than the older planes they replace. The route was originally launched in 1998, but now these more luxurious and modern aircraft take over the service, customers can enjoy the new Business booths and Economy class on long-haul flights, with a configuration of 36 seats in Business Class and 242 in Economy, the new Business Plus has seats that convert into fully flat beds of almost two meters, inserted into isolated modules with direct aisle access. In addition, the design and layout of the new Business Plus seats provide more privacy and comfort to passengers. In economy class, the seats are wider and ergonomic. They are equipped with an individual entertainment system with 9-inch touch screen, where customers can enjoy on- demand movies in several languages, TV series, documentaries, as well as specific programming for children. Each screen has a USB connector for Apple devices and also features a universal plug. In the future, Iberia will also offer WIFI in these planes so that all clients can access the Internet, and GSM connectivity for sending and receiving SMS and data through their personal telephones.

The Malpartida air base in Cáceres, Extremadora, has become a first for Spain, if not Europe, as the site now has the first air ambulance crew formed exclusively by women. The team who make up the crew of the HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) Eurocopter EC135 are commanded by Beatriz Parera, with Gloria Palacios by her side and medics Salobrar Sánchez and Rocío Ramos. Commander Parera says that the team has met with a very positive response, but “what really matters is not the kind of computer components we have, it is the harmony between the crew and healthcare professionals, as has been the case, for each of our missions”. The company Inaer España operates a total of 27 medical aircraft, including helicopters and airplanes. In 2012 the company fly a total of 8,228 medical emergency missions, treated 6,658 patients suffering from various conditions, including trauma, heart disease, stroke, sepsis, neonatal transport, and many others.

Ryanair has sought to deny outright recent allegations made against them, accusing the airline of doubling the price of flights from Madrid to Santiago de Compostela in the wake of the train crash that took the lives of 79 people. In a statement, the company refutes the testimony of some of the relatives of those who died, who had reported that the price of flights the Thursday morning after the tragedy, stating that in just two hours the cost of the flights went from 200 euro to 400 euro per person. However, the claim that the price increase existed is not disputed, but rather Ryanair has explained that the passengers involved were booked via the website Rumbo, an on line travel company they have had a history of problems with, stating that Rumbo were “improperly selling Ryanair flights and inflated prices to passengers”. Ryanair had previously sought a judgement to block Rumbo selling their flights, but the Supreme Court in Madrid granted permission to Rumbo, or Bravofly Rumbo Group as they were officially known, in a judgement in April of this year. According to Ryanair, “these sites also charge hidden fees or wrongly show prices”, at the same time noting that Ryanair themselves sold flight seats on Thursday between Madrid and Santiago “with prices ranging from 18 to 194 euro”. They also state that one complainant who was quoted the initial price of 471 euro, supposedly reserved with Rumbo, with a final price of 800 euro, shows that the online agent “inflated the price” and “improperly sold tickets to passengers”.

LOCAL NEWS R OUNDUP CROSS-CULTURAL PROGRAM DRAWS 330 PEOPLE

Unusual creature sightings are becoming more and more common place off the Mediterranean coast, in addition to the widespread growth of jellyfish, this week a rather large Minke whale was spotted off the coast, north of Valencia. Sharks were spotted in Port Saplaya and dolphins enjoying a trip to the coastline in El Puig. Sightings like those are not as unusual anymore, but also this week, two beaches were closed to bathers following numerous sighting of pelagic stingray, again common to our waters, but usually found in surface waters down to a depth of 100 m, rarely encountered except by fishery workers, and although not aggressive by nature, the pelagic stingray can inflict a severe, even fatal wound with its tail. Many environmentalists are growing increasingly concerned that over-fishing in the area is affecting the delicate balance of the ecosystem, forcing more of these creatures to adapt in their own search for food, after humankind are taking more than they should.

Residents living in the vicinity of Alicante train station have filed a formal complaint over noise this week. They say that a generator has been installed in the station, used for maintain the AVE high speed train, carrying out tasks such as emptying the toilet and replenishing water, but they have to endure the noise from this machinery for 16 hours per day, without rest. Now, a group of 300 families have joined together in collaboration in trying to get the train infrastructure company, ADIF, to deal with the problem, after they say that the city hall has refused to do anything about their inconvenience, which they say violated the city councils own noise regulations. The justice ministry has confirmed plans approved by the Mayor of Benidorm, Agustín Navarro, that will now criminalise those involved in the so called “shell” game, where an operator would place a small ball, or similar item onto a desk, covering it with one of three cups, and the player would have to guess which cup the ball is under. Long known as being a scam, those caught practising the game in Benidorm will now be dealt with under the penal code as an “aggravated offence”, resulting in potential prison sentences of between one and six years.

The Councillor for Immigration and Citizenship, Emilio Zaplana, was speaking last week about the success of an inter cultural community programme that was held at Rabaloche earlier this year thanks to a grant from the European Social Fund for Integration, which contributed through the Ministry of Health and Social Services 46,995 euros. A further 18,000 euros was allocated to the project from the Orihuela Department of Immigration According to figures provided by Zaplana, up until 30 June there were 14 activities organized at La Ermita de San Isidro, San Antonio de Padua and Santo Sepulcro La Ermita de San Isidro, attracting 276 participants. The aim of the project was to cut across the many social issues affecting immigrants that have settled in the area. For the most part the program attracted young women (73%) aged between 15-35 years. By nationality, 75% were Spanish and the other 24.6% foreigners, from Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia and Georgia. Activities included Zumba (51 participants), fitness (44) football (37) and crafts (20 people). Most of the classes for children were held during the first three weeks of July, to coincide with the cessation of activities organized by other associations.

MUNICIPAL BIBLOTECA REACHES 20,000 USERS The Councillor of Culture, Antonia Moreno, said that, in the 3 months since opening, the Maria Moliner Municipal Library had doubled its expectations achieving almost 20,000 users during the 77 days that it has been open, an average of 252 visitors a day. She said that there have been a total of 75 different activities in the facility, in which 1,837 people have participated, "particularly young people and children," Almost 600 people have actually joined the library but the councilor said that she was looking to achieve at least one library member per household.

The library also remained open for additional hours during the period that school examinations were held. It is hoped that the next cultural event to be held in the building will be a jazz Concert later this month in the library square.

GUARDIA CIVIL OFFICERS ARRESTED

Officers from the Guardia Civil have arrested six people, including two of their own colleagues in the province of Pontevedra, in relation to an alleged disclosure of confidential information in connection with criminal investigations, some relating to matters of drug trafficking. The arrests have been made ??over the past few days as a result of investigations into the fight against corruption that may occur inside and outside the institution, resulting in two Guardia Civil officers being amongst those charged. Four others were also arrested, all residents in the province of Pontevedra, for the alleged crime of disclosing secrets.

NEW VESTS FOR NATIONAL POLICE The Ministry of the Interior is spending 6 million euro on new vests for the police, which bulletproof, stab-proof, fire resistant to 200 degrees Celsius and also lighter than the traditional vests. Despite the economic crisis, the director general of the police has justified the outlay as “police safety is a top priority”. A total of 21,126 vests will be issued to officers, done in three stages, spread between now and 2015, “The aim is to modernize security systems as a key element of national security strategy and provide the agents of the latest and most modern means of defence to develop their missions with the utmost assurance” said Ignacio Cosidó, the Director General of the Police. The police have already taken delivery of 7,926 units, with another 6,000 being delivered each year until the total allocation is met in 2015.

SPANISH STATE DEFICIT DOWN 8.2%

In national accounting terms, the Spanish State posted a deficit to June 2013 of 40 billion euros. This equates to 3.81% of GDP and is 8.2% lower than the figure recorded in the same period last year, when it stood at 4.15% of GDP. Tax revenue rose by 4.68%. This State deficit figure includes expenditure on interest payments amounting to 13.98 billion euros, up 14.4% on the same period in 2012. When discounting the financial burden, the State posted a primary deficit of 26.02 billion euros - down 17% on last year. The Minister for the Treasury and Public Administration Services, Cristóbal Montoro, said that the figures show how "the Spanish economy has reached a turning point and that, from now on, we face a different path in terms of regaining economic activity, strengthening our economic growth and achieving job creation which should all happen sooner rather than later". He said that the public deficit reduction "lends strength to the changes taking place in our economy, which will see the end of the economic recession". The minister placed special emphasis on the growing tax revenue - up 4.6% - because "when tax revenue increases, it means an economic change is taking place in the country, there is clear improvement in the indicators, reason for which we can look forward with confidence and hope in being able to say that in the second half of 2013 that the recession will end in Spain". The most significant figures - in national accounting terms include those corresponding to the taxes levied on production and imports. With a total of 17.07 billion euros, they have risen by 16.3%. VAT has risen by 16.9% to 12.25 billion euros while the other taxes on production and imports have risen by 14.9%, due to the funds resulting from environmental taxation, the carbon tax and the special tax on hydrocarbons, on natural gas, fuel oil and diesel. The current taxes on income and wealth amount to 20.15 billion euros, 3.6% less than in the first quarter of 2012. This decline is mainly due to the payment of tax returns from previous years resulting from appeal proceedings.

Property income amounted to 3.96 billion euros, with an increase of 61.1%. This increase was generated by both the interest from the Regional Liquidity Fund, which amounted to 530 million euros (no equivalent comparison in the previous year), and the dividends and shares in profits from the Bank of Spain, which posted an increase of 83.83% on 2012. In the first half of 2013, non-financial expenses incurred by the State amounted to 89.53 billion euros - up 2% on the same period in 2012. This growth was influenced by increasing financial costs, pensions and transfers to the Social Security authorities. When discounting those expenses over which the State has no room to manoeuvre (such as interest payments, pensions and transfers to the Social Security authorities - which include expenditure on unemployment benefits), non-financial expenses would have fallen by 3.8%. At a total of 85.59 billion euros, current expenses rose by 1.7% while, at 3.94 billion euros, capital expenses rose by 8.6%. The increase in current expenses is mainly due to the 14.4% increase in financial costs resulting from a greater volume of debt in circulation and a bringing forward of the State financing programme when compared with the previous year because of the low interest rates on debt. The State payroll amounted to 9.8 billion euros. This is 1.5% lower than at June 2012 due to the limitation placed on the replacement of civil servants other than in those cases provided for by law. Social benefits other than social transfers in kind rose by of 4.9% to a total of 6.1 billion euros. Of this amount, 5.91 billion euros correspond to civil service pensions (up 5.6%). These increases were offset by the decrease in current transfers between public administration services, which, at 46.07 billion euros, fell by 3.1% on 2012 due to the lower transfers made to the regional governments. This was the result of both lower payments on account from the so-called Adequacy Fund (Fondo de Suficiencia) and fewer advance payments on account in the settlement of the regional financing system. On the other hand, transfers to the Social Security authorities rose by 8.2% and other current transfers rose by 11.5% due to a 6.5% increase in the contribution to the EU when compared with the first half of 2012. Capital expenses rose by 8.6% due to the 707 million euros of aid for investment - 330 million euros higher than in 2012. This was caused by the higher transfers to ADIF, which this year has taken on investments to improve the railway network and maintenance and administration of the infrastructure previously owned by the State. Gross capital formation fell by 6.1%, with expenditure of 2.13 billion euros.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a teacher, head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands as a newspaper editor. He is still enjoying life in the sun as a writer and author.

EYES DOWN FOR HARMLESS EXPAT FUN Many expats move to their new home in the sun without being fully aware of national and local laws, together with the consequences if they fail to abide by them. When we moved to Spain, we were often told by more experienced expats to be very careful on the roads just before Christmas and not to upset the police. Rumour had it that the police were unnecessarily harsh during such periods, and would take every opportunity to fine wrong doers. This, it was said, was to pay for their bonus and Christmas parties. I doubted that this was true, but I did notice a startling correlation at the time. However, whatever the truth, it is true that many expats take the view of “ignore it and it will go away.” Sadly, ignorance of the law is no defence in any circumstances, and the wise expat needs to be aware of this fact. Brits are generally very fond of a bit of bingo, particularly if they are expats living in the sun, or are on holiday. Bingo is as British as fish and chips, a pint of “best” and wearing a knotted handkerchief on holiday. I don't remember playing the game for many years, but I do remember it as a bit of harmless fun, and from which a lot of people get much pleasure. I recall many expat bars in Spain’s Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol, where bingo evenings (and afternoons) are highly popular events, providing a welcome stream of regulars to otherwise empty bars, as well as a providing a valuable source of fund raising revenue for many local charities who would benefit from the proceeds. It also provided a regular social event and company for those expats who had moved abroad and were anxious to make friends with

like-minded people in their neighbourhood. Did I say harmless fun? This is where the cynic would say that this is the cue for someone to step in and stop it. Well, this is just what happened to the owner of an expat bar in Portugal’s Algarve not so long ago. It was one of those Friday night events when a well meaning landlady, let us call her Dot, decided to raise a few euros by providing a little entertainment for her regulars. A tin of biscuits, a large bar of chocolate and a few cheap drinks were the prizes on offer - hardly the stuff of the Las Vegas gambling scene, but sufficient to tempt 28 of her regulars into the bar for a few drinks and a game of bingo in good company. It all seemed to be going well as the regulars settled down for a few games. However, shortly after starting the game, a number of armed police burst into the bar and, having checked out the situation during several earlier Friday evening visits in plain clothes, decided to put an end to all to this decadence and villainy by raiding the bar, and arresting Dot and her punters. Before the enthusiastic bingo players could even call “House”, Dot and her 28 regulars were bundled into three police vans and driven off to the cells, accused of attending an illegal gambling den. Even the prizes, a tin of biscuits, a large bar of chocolate and some drinks, were impounded as “evidence” to be placed before the magistrate. Later, Dot was charged, appeared before the magistrate and fined 700 euros, as well as receiving a suspended four-month prison sentence. Dot’s regulars were a little more fortunate and were charged with "exploitation of illegal gambling, illegal gambling and witnessing

9

By Bar rie Mahoney

illegal gambling" and fined 150 euros each. The Portuguese police responded to enquiries from the press by commenting that the raid had been carried out following "information reported by anonymous citizens". Hmm, I may be jumping to conclusions, but by that I assume that a nearby bar owner, jealous of Dot’s successful business strategy, had reported her to his friends at the police station. Portugal it seems has strict controls on such expat fun, and premises have to apply for a gambling licence, which Dot was clearly unaware of. So what happened to the prizes? I understand that the police returned the tin of biscuits and alcohol to Dot, but I do wonder what happened to the chocolate? As for Dot? Well, she has decided never to play a game of bingo again. MISGUIDED O PINIONS CON CERNING ORIHU ELA COSTA Recently conversing with some Spanish people we discovered that we all belonged to the Orihuela municipality. They started to rave about the city of Orihuela and about how fortunate we were to be living there. I pointed out that I lived on the Orihuela Costa and far from being fortunate I felt that I lived in an expat ghetto that was totally segregated from main stream Spanish society. I then went on to explain that basic services that all Spanish people took for granted were missing from our area. This resulted in a very long discourse from them that I should feel privileged to be residing in an area with such an area a historical and cultural heritage and that if I didn’t like the Spanish way of life why was I living in Spain. Clearly they provided me with the perfect opening to point out that I was not complaining about Spain, that I had made a very real choice to live here along with many others who made up the large expat community living on the coast. I stated that non Spanish residents had contributed heavily into the Spanish economy when they bought their homes and continue to contribute substantially into the economy on an on going daily basis. I then listed some of the differences between Orihuela City and Orihuela Costa, many children receiving all their education in sub standard, prefabricated schools; the lack of even one library; the lack of youth facilities; the lack of any cultural centre, music society or cultural programme accessible to coastal residents;

the lack of any services, day centre or residential accommodation for older people; the lack of a cemetery for burying our dead. I could have amplified every one of the points and added several more but felt that I shouldn’t over load them with negatives. However, I did point out that all these were basic services provided throughout Spain. I then took great delight in pointing out that Orihuela Costa residents and businesses provided over a third to the budget of the Orihuela municipality and that effectively every coastal resident were subsidizing the very life style enjoyed by all the inhabitants of Orihuela city including the one they raved about. What really concerned me about this conversation was that most of the residents in Orihuela have no idea about the total neglect of the coastal area. They are also under some misguided impression that the large influxes of immigrants who purchased homes and have made their life in Spain are some kind of drain on the Spanish economy. Many have little comprehension of the large amounts of money that’s brought into the country by way of pensions received from overseas and the resultant very large economic benefits derived. There was no awareness that every European Union pensioner receiving a pension from outside Spain and who had not paid into the Spanish Social Security and Heath system had their health provision fully paid for from their country of origin. What really upsets me is that the views of these Spanish people are

not isolated or unique. Virtually nothing is ever printed in the local section of the Spanish press illuminating the serous deficiencies affecting Orihuela Costa. land, these home owners will have the final missing piece of their historic jigsaw complete.

A new and revolutionary scheme has been inaugurated in the city of Orihuela, where unused land in key areas are turned into car parking spaces, allowing the land owner to avoid paying tax on the plots, in exchange for allowing the use for parking in otherwise barren areas. The first such “solar parking” scheme has now opened, with conversion work carried out by town hall workers, the only costs being the materials needed; resulting in a total expense of just 1,900 euro, compared to a budget of 4,650 euro should the work have been contracted to a private firm. Four new sites have been identified for approval to join the scheme, which will offer an additional 97 parking places in the city. The regional heads of the Partido Popular in Valencia have emphasised in a number of statements that they will not support a censure motion in Orihuela, unless it is lead by a member of their party not facing any kind of legal allegation of corruption on any level. That therefore rules out the former mayor, Mónica Lorente, who the local PP group are adamant must lead the party to theoretically overthrow the current government and put Lorente back as the mayor. A position of stalemate has now been reached, with the regional party unlikely to back down as it would go against their principles of representation, despite Lorente still being in the position of assumed innocence until proven guilty. The final plenary session before the summer recess passed with little drama this week in Orihuela, with the municipal council agreeing at least one key point, the legalisation of a number of homes in the Mil Palmeras area. The properties were believed to have been built with all correct permits in place, but the land which they occupy was not classified as residential, therefore making the properties illegal in terms of occupation of territory. With the town hall hoping to raise around eleven and a half million euro, the spilt from the sale will be as previously approved, divided between the city, surrounding villages and the coastal area, allowing the town hall to pay for a number of projects which are pending funding. With plots being offered in areas such as La Ciñuelica, El Barranco, La Florida and Lomas de Cabo Roig, it is hoped that the areas will be of considerable interest for developers of new homes, especially as the construction sector is starting to grow once again.

The town and urban planning department of Orihuela has announced the opening of a new disciplinary file against Proambiente, the eighth legal case so far, for misuse of land for piping methane gas in a landfill in the municipality. The town hall claims that the actions of the company show how they are still expanding their operations, despite previous offences relating to environmental licensing which has led down to the closure of a number of their operations recently. The Local Government this week approved 24 extra grants to help families struggling through the financial crisis, awarding a total of 4,700 euro of budget to help them pay their electric, water, food or pharmacy bills.

A new booklet has been released on the Orihuela Costa in English and Castilian publicising details of two new guided tours which began on 1 August in Orihuela City. The pamphlet is being distributed in over 100 tourist and council offices between Alicante and Cartagena. The Councillor for Tourism, Rosa Martinez, announced details of the two new excursions which will take place throughout the summer. The first is a cultural tour around the Orihuela city museums and monuments which will take place every Monday and Wednesday morning from 10.30 am to 12.30. The second trip takes place a little later in the day, 8pm to 10pm every Tuesday and Thursday when a city guide will take you around a route dramatised by actors from the Municipal Theatre Workshop and local theatrical associations. Tou will be taken through the central streets of the city from el ardo de Santo Domingo to the Plaza del Carmen. Both routes will include the tasting of typical products (limón granizado and dulces) at the souvenir shop in front of the Museum of Miguel Hernandez. “The Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning trips will both be presented in English in order that we attract the largest number of visitors” said Martinez. Reservations can be made by phone at 965 304 645 or by e-mail to orihuelaturistica@orihuela.es or at any tourist information point. The routes and costs are further explained in the pamphlet of which 18,000 have been published. Bus pick up and drop off points will be the Montepiedra and La Zenia Hotels as well at Zenia Boulevard. Children under 14 years of age will receive a 50% discount. Martinez said that the tourist office in the Playa Flamenca Town Hall has had a recent facelift in addition to which a new tourist booth has been established in Zenia Boulevard which will operate for eight hours a day on all seven days of the week

FIND A COOLER SOLUTION WITH R&R CONSTRUCTION As the summer sun melts most of us away, we might forget that there´s a simple solution to cooling down in the heat, the installation of air conditioning. But with so much choice around, how can we possibly know who to turn to, when all we want to do is relax and cool down?

There is a simple answer to that question; we turn to a company with a proven track record, specialists at what they do, and who clearly

focus on quality. One such company is R&R Construction, who have already been established and operating for the past 9 years, where many have come and gone, they still have that proven track record that shows they can give us what we want. But what about the quality angle, well, again, they satisfy that criteria too. If we think of quality motor cars, tools, watches or cookware, we might well think of Germany as the epitome of quality, we might also read in the news how German engineering and business are leading the way in Europe. The installers at R&R Construction are all German trained, taking that quality standard into your home with every installation or repair that they carry out. They have a wide range of brand new units, all the latest standards in quality and efficiency, all 2013 models, with A+ classification for energy efficiency, which not only goes towards your home´s energy certification, but also saves you money when it is running. The reason R&R Construction recommend the A+ units is that they give rise to a 40% reduction in energy bills in comparison to the older standard units, and therefore, will ultimately pay for themselves in the savings in your energy bills They do of course still have older stock available, in case you prefer a more classic air conditioning unit. In fact, although limited in supply, they have some of the older stock items available, fully installed, for just 390 euro. These units, like their modern relatives, still come with a 2 year guarantee. As for routine maintenance, R&R Construction do that too. It is essential that once a year the filters are cleaned and the drainage and gas levels are checked, which is just 40 euro for 2 units, and 20 euros per unit thereafter. This is just a general overview of the services and units on offer, R&R Construction are more than happy to talk to you about your own, personal, options, so all you have to do is give them a call for good deals and a no obligation site survey to find out what is best for you. Not forgetting, as their name suggests, R&R Construction also carry out general building and maintenance work, so if you find anything wrong, you know the solution, Call R&R Construction on 662 088 965 or their see main ad on page 8. You can be sure that they will get it right.

TIPS FROM LÍNEA DIRECTA ON DRIVING TO YOUR HOLIDAY DESTINATION There is no doubt that the high number of people travelling in summer creates one of the biggest problems of the year as far as road safety is concerned. The large influx of vehicles, high temperatures and long journeys, make the summer period one of the key moments in the struggle to keep down the number of accidents on our roads. As a result, Línea Directa Aseguradora, one of the Spanish companies most committed to road safety, has drawn up a short list of recommendations for all drivers, in an attempt to minimise the dangers involved and enable people to enjoy their holidays and keep safe: Prepare the journey in advance: do not improvise or take the route you will follow for granted. Calculate your route, stops and rest periods carefully before setting off, especially if it is the first time you have travelled to your chosen destination. Check your vehicle: check tyre pressure, water and oil levels and even the air conditioning system, especially if it hasn’t been recharged for several years. Have a rest before setting off: not only is it recommended to have a rest every 2 hours, but also before the journey, especially if you are going to get up early in the morning. It is essential to allow enough time for carrying out small tasks such as preparing your luggage. A car is not a removal van: do not take too many suitcases, and above all, be careful with how you arrange them in the vehicle. A loose object inside a car can be a lethal weapon in a crash. Take turns driving: if the possibility exists and the journey is long, do not think twice about sharing the driving with another person. This reduces the chances of being distracted and is an effective measure against boredom and fatigue. Take on enough fluids: in some parts of Spain, temperatures in summer can exceed 40 degrees centigrade, so it is extremely important to drink water or soft drinks continuously, even if you are not thirsty. In addition, if you are going to stop to eat something, avoid any type of drink which contains alcohol.

'The Story So Far...' Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Foundation DVD now available. Hot of the press this DVD tells the fascinating story from the start of the centre right up to it's achievements to date. Professionally filmed and narrated by Viva TV, the film shows how the rescue centre was born after Sue and Rod Weeding were shown an injured horse that was being kept in the most appalling conditions. The professionals who are on hand to look after and treat the horses are featured including the vet, dentist and farrier and their importance in the successful running of the operation is highlighted. The filming of some of the rescues that have taken place over the last 5 years and the conditions in which these animals were found makes for some very emotional viewing. The main aim of the EHCRC is to rescue, rehabilitate and provide a sanctuary for life for equines in distress. The rehabilitation process has proven not to be as straightforward as originally thought and Sue describes the trials and tribulations that she and Rod have gone through and continue to do so to ensure the safety and good health of the 50 plus equines at the centre.

Most importantly the future of the centre is key and Sue explains how giving the centre foundation status, appointing trustees, and involving and educating young people will ensure that the organisation will expand and flourish. Open days are very important to show the public what goes on at the centre, questions are asked and answered and the popular tours of the facility are shown on the film. Finally the volunteers who are an essential part of the operation are shown going about their daily tasks with enthusiasm and a genuine love of these beautiful creatures. The DVD's are available for 7 Euro's each in all the EHCRC charity shops located in Ciudad Quesada, Guardamar, Los Montesinos, La Zenia and San Louis Urbanisation near Torrevieja. And of course at the centre every Sunday during the open days. It really is a cracking 35 minutes of entertainment and a fascinating insight into what goes on in this popular venue here on the Costa Blanca. Why not come and meet all of our

residents? We are open to the public every Sunday 13:00-17:00. Free entry. Tasty hot food, cakes, teas and refreshments are available. Also our very popular horse tours. We also have Merchandise and souvenirs. Plus Faith`s book “Diary of a heroic Horse If you want to become a volunteer or need a map and directions visit our web site www.easyhorsecare.net or call Sue 652 021 980. David Feast can be heard on Exite Radio tomorrow evening talking about the Foundation on The Tuesday Edition with Kevin Reardon. The interview will be aired at approx 6.15pm on 89.2 and 93.1 FM.

SIMPLE WAYS TO STAY POSITIVE Keep affirmations short and simple and always use only positive words e.g., “I am in good health” is more effective than “I don’t want to be ill, please keep me healthy”; – use words that suit you and reflect what you want. Say the affirmation as if you have those qualities or things now.

ERADICATING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Positive Visualisation The more you worry about something the worse it appears, you avoid dealing with it and the fear and anxiety surrounding it becomes bigger. One way to deal with this negative energy is to imagine or mentally “see” a positive result.

BY PENNY WING We can’t always control events in our lives but we can control our reactions to these events. Whilst those of us with a more positive outlook on life find it easy to “think” ourselves better, it is often harder for those people who always expect a negative outcome. The good news is that it is possible to change your way of thinking if you want to, it just takes practice!

Positive Affirmations This is such an easy thing to do; repeating a positive phrase about yourself or a situation can have an amazing effect on how you feel. Many of my clients have found this hard to believe initially but after doing it for some time they have seen the results. Decide what it is you want to say about yourself or the situation and then say it every day out loud, preferably in front of a mirror. If you find this uncomfortable just do it anywhere; it will become easier and more convincing the more you do it. You can also write the affirmation down on a piece of paper and carry it around with you during the day and refer to it regularly. When you notice a change in how you feel, change the affirmation if you need to.

Start by sitting quietly where you won’t be disturbed and visualise yourself dealing with the situation in a calm manner and with a successful outcome. Really try to create as detailed a scene as possible e.g. if you need to sell your house start to visualise someone coming to view it, making you an offer, going to the notary together, signing the paperwork and so on. .

Realistic Goals Why do we push ourselves so hard? There is only so much we can do in one day. Rather than set yourself 20 things to do and feel upset when you don’t do them all, reduce the number of things to 10 and when you have done them all “pat yourself on the back” and acknowledge what you have achieved. Don’t rush from one task to another, sit still for 5 minutes, close your eyes and concentrate on this positive feeling before moving onto the next job. Regularly find time in between jobs to congratulate yourself and feel positive about yourself.

Past mistakes We always seem to be able to remember the mistakes we have made in the past more easily than the achievements or successes. This can be one of the most challenging thought processes to change…but you can! Firstly, you need to accept that the past is past and you cannot change it. When you think back to a mistake you have made, take time to sit down and write down all the things you learnt from it. Ask yourself would you do the same thing again and invariably the answer will be no; you will then be able to acknowledge that even though it may have been hard at the time you have learnt a valuable lesson and are now more than able to cope with difficult situations. Turn negative into positive! Penny is a qualified Diana Cooper Angel & Spiritual Master Teacher, Usui /Angelic Reiki Master Teacher & holistic therapist. Last Friday the Council of Ministers authorized the allocation of 1.54 billion euros over the next three years to the National Strategy for the eradication of violence against women. According to Vice-President, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, this is "an ambitious and most comprehensive project which will ensure that Spain remains at the forefront of what is being done by the European Union to protect women". Its aim is to protect women and children that suffer from gender-based violence. In order to implement the plan and overcome abuse, seven lines of action and 258 measures have been established, including a Europe-wide hotline - 116, a personalised response to female victims and assistance to the most vulnerable groups such as elderly women or residents of rural communities. For the first time, the plan includes a specific healthcare protocol against female genital mutilation. According to Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, the aim is for victims to be aware that "there is a way out" and that they are entitled to a "dignified and better" life. The Vice-President also said that the other "key tool for combating violence against women" approved on Friday was the signing of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. This Convention, in which "the woman is the focal point", was signed by 29 States and ratified by four, but will not come into force until such time as it is ratified by ten States in total, of which at least eight must belong to the Council of Europe.

THINGS TO DO THIS AUGUST WEEK As we look towards our cultural guide for this week, we start off with a holiday, the Día de Nuestra Señora de África, a time of celebration for Christians in the Spanish city of Ceuta, in the north African area of Spanish territory, where it is also a local public holiday. Many Christians go to the Plaza de África in Ceuta on August 4, laying flowers in front of the statue of the Our Lady of Africa or outside the church, before a procession on the 5th of August, when the costaleros carry the statue through the streets of the city, as people throw flowers from balconies onto the statue. Fireworks are set off to mark the end of the fair and holiday. Locally, Dolores is celebrating fiesta time with one of the oddest traditions ever during Monday´s event, the "La Caca de la Vaca", in which you buy a ticket which has a number that corresponds to a square on a plot of land. Then, if the cow, who is the star of this event, deposits her “waste” on your plot, you win a prize! There is also a late night music concert on the Monday as a finale to the event. It´s Elche´s turn to celebrate the Moors and Christians fiesta from Wednesday the 7th until the weekend, with all the usual costumed paraded, battles, music and dancing, with various events throughout Beach Volleyball at La Zenia from Friday

the week, culminating with a full day of events on Sunday, with official speeches, parades, lunch, baptisms and a flower parade, ending with a huge party in the relevant camps. On the Orihuela Costa we have Zumba classes all week, in fact they run right through until the end of August, Monday to Friday at La Glea beach, with the VII Orihuela Costa Cup Beach Volleyball Competition starting on Friday at La Zenia beach, running through until Sunday, offering a delight to many who enjoy partaking in or just watching this energetic sport. Not forgetting those cultural tours of Orihuela City, with a costumed guide showing you around some of the hidden gems of the culture rich location. The outlet fair is still on in Torrevieja, opening at 7 in the evening all week, with a Jazz & Rock concert on Wednesday, Andromeda, at the Teatro Municipal. Sports fans can also enjoy FC Torrevieja playing football against UCAM Murcia CF, at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Wednesday night too. Thursday night is great for adults and kids alike with Veo Veo, The Musical, set to entertain the little ones at the Teatro Municipal, whilst the much anticipated Ali Campbell´s UB 40 will be entertaining the adults at the Eras de la sal. On Saturday, Torrevieja offers music with a Latin flavor as well as a photography exhibition, plus film and storytelling for the children. For a touch of pomp and ceremony, Saturday should be one to look out for with the Coronation of the Queen of the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, at the Plaza de Encarnación Puchol de La Mata. Torre de la Horadada hosts the Fisherman´s market, at their Paseo Marítimo on Thursday, but if traditional markets are something to tickle your fancy, then a trip slightly further afield might be just up your street, as Hondón de las Nieves hosts a rather unusual Roman Market, on Friday the 9th and Saturday the 10th of August, when not only is Cesar himself expected to make an appearance, but also the perhaps better known, at least amongst the younger generations, Asterix and Obelix. Finally, again slightly further afield, you might remember us talking about the Castillitos, at Cabo Tiñoso a few weeks ago, where the old military cannons and buildings are open for us to walk around and enjoy, well the good news is that many people have been voting to put them on the cultural map of Spain, with them now reaching the semi-

finals. Even better news is that the scores will now be reset to zero, which is fortunate considering that the cannons actually got their placing having received 740 votes, whereas the Judería de Hervás rocketing ahead with 3,630 votes. TRAFFIC AND ROAD SAFETY NATIONAL MOTORING NEWS CHANGES APPROVED

The National Competition Commission, or CNC, has opened disciplinary proceedings against the companies Repsol, Cepsa, BP, Disa, Meroil and Galp, as a result of various reports already filed in which it is suggested that they may have a collective agreement for price fixing in the motor fuel sector. In a statement, the agency announced the initiation of two disciplinary acts, one against all of the companies named for possible anticompetitive bilateral conduct, and another against Repsol, Cepsa and BP, for coordinating pricing between the companies, including independent operators on their networks. The agency has also said that the investigation will take a maximum of 18 months to complete, and was started due to lack of competition in the sector, finding significant increases in fuel prices, in a context of general price levels, higher than those recorded in neighbouring countries.

The Minister for Home Affairs, Jorge Fernández Díaz, declared that the Draft Bill, approved by the Council of Ministers, will partially amend the text of the Law on Traffic, Motor Vehicles and Road Safety with the aim of "Spain also increasingly becoming a safer country in terms of road safety". This reform, according to the minister, will focus on "specific aspects" that will enable us "to tackle the challenge of being a pioneer country in terms of road safety". The amendments provided by the new legislation include the mandatory nature of those under the age of 18 wearing a helmet when cycling on any kind of road, whether urban or inter urban. This obligation will come into force as soon as the law is passed without the need to wait for the implementing regulation. The principle of "zero tolerance" as regards the presence of drugs in a person's system is another of the main new amendments included in the draft bill. This clearly differentiates between administrative and criminal offences. The detection of drugs shall be performed through a saliva test and fines will be increased from 500 euros to 1,000 euros if the levels of alcohol established are exceeded or if the presence of drugs in a person's system is detected. Jorge Fernández Díaz justified the increase in penalties through the need to fight against one of the main causes of accidents. The new legislation bans systems to detect radar and maintains the ban on radar jamming systems. It also modifies child safety systems in vehicles, changing the criterion of age for height. The reform presented last week, according to the minister, will be approved before the end of the year, will come into force at the beginning of 2014 and will do away with the general Traffic Regulation by spring of 2014.

AIRBUS A330 TAKES OVER AMERICA An Iberia Airlines Airbus A330 made her first operational flight from Madrid to Chicago and back this week, meaning that this state of the art jet will fly to most of the airline´s destinations in the USA, including Boston, New York, Miami and Chicago, at 15% more efficiency than the older planes they replace.

The DGT traffic department has this week warned Spanish drivers that driving through France will no longer be as easy in terms of avoiding traffic sanctions and fines, as from the 1st of April, French authorities will register offences by none native vehicles, forwarding the complaint to the offending driver or vehicle owner in their own country, in this case, Spain. The same will also happen in reverse, with Spanish authorities able to sanction French drivers for traffic violations, marking the first active agreements for that the European Union is trying to achieve, of a single method of fining offending drivers in all countries. The Extremadura region of Spain has bolstered its commitment to sustainable energy, announcing that rechargeable points for electronic cars will be free to use for the next two years. The 18 charging points installed in the city of Merída, the regional capital, will be free to those residents who register and obtain a permit to use them, and the city council are already joining the scheme by replacing two of their vehicles with electric equivalents, resulting in them saving around 6,000 euro per year. Japanese company Toyota Motor, which includes the Daihatsu and Hino brands, plans to produce about 10.1 million vehicles worldwide in 2013, which would mark the biggest number of vehicles manufactured in a year. Toyota expects to produce about 8.9 million units of the parent brand, of which 3.3 million will be manufactured in Japan, 200,000 above what was announced last year.

Officers from the National Police have arrested 8 people, 3 of them in Madrid, dismantling a workshop in Valencia where mid-ranged cars were transformed into fake sports cars, such as Ferrari and Aston Martin luxury vehicles, which were then sold on the internet, sometimes by request, for less than a quarter of the true market value, at around 40,000 euro. The arrests were as a result of a genuine Ferrari dealer, concerned that these inferior imitations were reaching the marketplace. Officers seized 19 vehicles, 17 of which were imitation Ferrari vehicles and two imitation Aston Martin cars.

VISTABELLA BOWLS CLUB CBBA PREMIER 20 CHAMPIONS Sponsored by Autos Direct San Miguel What an amazing week for Vistabella Bowls Club. Last week we reported that although we hadn’t won any leagues this summer we were delighted with our overall performance. Were we being cautious or was it just because we had been told by those influential people at those BIG clubs who always win everything that we couldn’t possibly win a Major league title. Last Tuesday we proved what a great club Vistabella is becoming with a 14 points to 8 win over La Siesta and by 143 shots to 118 which sealed top place in the CBBA Premier 20 League. Our Singles specialists Maggie Furness and Ian Kenyon once again came up trumps, what a super season they have had between them. In the Pairs Sheila Cox and Stuart Allman kept up their winning sequence as did Gail Watson, Andy Leggatt and Fred Willshire in the Trips and both our rinks teams of Sandra Burrows, Les Barber, Neil Burrows skipped by Mike Regan and Olwyn Ratcliffe, Bill Corbishley, Mac Maclean skipped by Brian Dunn kept up the good work with victories. Team Captain Stuart Allman would like to pass on his thanks to everyone who played for the team for all the sup-

port that they have given him and also to those people who turned up as markers giving up their night to support the team. Prior to SUPER TUESDAY we also had some success on Monday in the Men’s Division 1 Ian Kenyon’s team lost for the first time season by 4 points to 1 Ian and Fred Willshire managed a draw but this gave us the 1 point necessary to ensure that we top the league and although there is still one game outstanding in this league the two teams involved cannot catch us. Our Ladies team played their last game and had a great 5 nil points win and by 33 shots to 20, Beryl Regan and Barbara Brown had a good win at Greenlands while Jenny Bowman and Ann Rudkin obliged by winning at home. This unfortunately was only good enough to keep them in second place as Lynn Greenlands team also finished with a 5 nil win to retain their title. Mike Regan’s team played Country Bowls in Division 2 but were on the wrong end of a 5 nil result. So if you wish to join one of the most up and coming bowls clubs on the Costa Blanca phone 966 107 846 to take advantage of the special offers for new members. Don’t miss out on this special offer.

GREENLANDS BOWLS CLUB By Steve Hibberd Pride of place in this weeks roundup, just has to go to Lynn Greenland's ladies team in the SABA pairs league. Needing a win on the last week to guarantee finishing as champions, they did it in style. Starting the day 2 points ahead of Vistabella, they took on a Quesada team, whereas Vistabella locked horns with our other ladies team led by Marilyn Fryatt. At home, Jan Westall & Angie Goodfellow did their bit by winning 18-16, then nervously awaiting the outcome of their comrades match over at Quesada. With Vistabella taking a 5-0 clean sweep, it was imperative that Mary Lockley & Sandra Heath held their nerve. This they did, meaning their 18-14 victory ensured the team retained the honour of SABA ladies pairs champions for another season. Our mens team took on champions elect Vistabella, in their penultimate match. Needing just a point to win div 1, we certainly gave them a fright. Mel Brown & Brian Pocock fought hard to earn draw at home (19-19), whilst over at Vistabella, Phil Lockley & Steve Hibberd won well (25-11), meaning that although we won 4-1, it's Vistabella who progress to the finals. The internal club Tues league recently reached a conclusion. Congratulations to winners Marina Beardsall & Brian Miller, along with Charles Langlois & Glyn Inwood who finished r/up. Although not showering themselves in glory, our Premier 20 side played the last match of what proved to be a rather undistinguished season. Against El Rancho, Sandra Heath won her singles match (21-2), as did the rinks team of Nadine Bater, David Fryatt, Sue Johnson & Terry Lemon (19-15). Due to a non appearance of a team member over at El Rancho, Mike 'Super Sub' Thomas came to his teams rescue, by not only making up the numbers, but featuring prominently in the trips narrow 19-18 victory. Alongside Tony Hodges & skip Brian Miller, they were the only winners over at the 'Ranch', resulting in a 6-12 final day defeat. Many thanks to El Rancho for using common sense in allowing our Welsh wizard to weave his magic, even though he was far from being properly dressed for the occasion! On behalf of joint captain Brian Miller and myself, we would like to thank everyone who represented the club in the Premier 20 league this season, especially the markers and travelling reserves, who showed total commitment. It just gets better for the Quesada friendlies crew, who last week extended the overall shots margin to a huge 133. Amongst the 5 victories at Quesada were the days biggest score of 36-2 from Helen Langlois, Jan Westall & Marilyn Fryatt.

HUB SPORTS BAR GOLF SOCIETY By Paul Durrant The Hub made the 30 minute journey to Saurines Golf, near Roldan Sunday last to enjoy the delights of the quirkey Nicklaus Trail course. Very few bunkers and a links style layout plus the odd hillock in the middle of the fairway, is not everyones cup of tea. However, being greeted with excellent tee boxes, lush fairways and sometimes peculiar, but well maintained greens, does change the minds of the cynics among us. A good turnout of members and guests, including the effervescent organiser John Stevenson, teed off late morning to enjoy the midday temperatures of the desert course. Charity event organiser Stevenson had the pleasure of 4 hours golf with Hub proprietor Cam McHardy, the latter finding some decent form after a disastrous effort at Roda. In fact his 33 points were enough for a podium finish, this time second spot. Playing partner Stevenson went one better and took the PJ´s Rentacar best guest title by two points from Micky Pimm, with a fine tally of 38 points, 20 of which were accumulated on the back nine. Alison Scammell, lawyer and director of PJ´s found the answer to recent woes on the course, no not intense lessons but a brand new outfit from top to toe. It certainly worked as her 35 point total leap frogged her over husband Trevor and second placed McHardy into top spot. A poor front nine of only 11 points was totally eclipsed by a magnificent 24 point back nine. Hoping to repeat her efforts at the next Hub outing at La Finca, Alison has been spending her spare time inspecting the new ladies collection at the Golf Factory, much to her spouse´s chagrin.

Results: PJ´s Rent a Car best guest: 3rd Tony McCarthy (35pts), 2nd Micky Pimm (36pts), 1st John Stevenson (38pts) N.T.P: Hole 7 Steve Morris, Hole 10 Micky Pimm, Hole 18 Micky Pimm. Hub Grand Prix: 3rd Trevor Scammell (32pts), 2nd Cam McHardy (33pts), 1st Ali Scammell (35pts) Next Event:La Finca, Sunday 11th August (register Hub, Villamartin) Picture shows L/R Trevor Scammell, Alison Scammell, Cam McHardy

It was back again to this lovely course at Monforte del Cid and it is always well presented, as one visitor who had not been there before said, “the greens are like snooker tables” praise indeed. By Janet Thomas The Kings Cup Competition finished this week, Congratulations to the Champions Quesada...and depending on the amount of Divisions next season this will decide whether the Sheriffs are relegated or not? Unfortunately it looks like our Mavericks are returning to the Red Division. We had a bye last Tuesday and after leading the P20 for most of the season we had to wait until WEDNESDAY evening before we found out that we had lost the comp by 1 point and finished runners up to Vistabella. All the schedules have been sent out for Russell’s benefit 3-day comp in August. Lots of donations have been gratefully received for the Tombola & Raffles...There will also be a bring & buy clothing rail with something to suit everyone. Jackie Breslin presented Russell & June with a Shirt, Shoes, Bags and goodies for their New Zealand trip, which he had procured from Henselite. The presentation took place at Quesada. The clubs internal 2 wood trips started this weds and looks an interesting competition, good luck to all. Internal, KANGAROO league finished Thursday 1st after many ups & downs (what do you expect with kangaroos) or was it the confusion of the “aussie pairs” format – “no, it’s not your turn; you’ve already bowled your 2 woods”. We finally got the hang of it & there were many close matches but the final winners were: “The BANDICOOTS” – Margaret Morrison, Ian Ross, John Malden, Trevor Vanner & captain Keith Jones. ELCHE KEEP LOCAL BRAGGING RIGHTS

HERCULES CF.....1 ELCHE CF.............1 Elche take the City of

BY JOHN Alicante Trophy XX by MCGREGOR winning the penalty shoot-out 4 – 1 in front of 4,000 spectators. Elche retained their position as the region’s number one team and Hercules’ bogey side by winning a hard-fought game at the Rico Perez in Alicante on Saturday night, which gave both sides a useful work out to play their new close-season signings. This time Botia was the only Elche defender who started against Benfica in midweek, and similarly in midfield Ruben Perez, Mantecon, Javi Flores, Aaron and Alvaro all started the match, very changed from Wednesday. Most of the first half was uneventful, although Aaron hit the Hercules bar on 22 minutes, and Suarez went close for the visitors, as did Ortiz for Hercules. All the real action of the match began just before halftime: the temperature on the field rose as Hercules’ Paco Pena was sent off, straight red for a bad tackle on Mantecon, with everyone getting excited. In the second half with tempers cooled somewhat it was a surprise when the ten men Alicantinos went ahead on the hour as Assulin scored from a Dioni pass. But the Illicitanos showed their spirit when Coro equalised from a corner five minutes later. Falcon had saved from substitute Lomban but could only parry his header to the lurking Coro who tapped in. The match stayed at 1 – 1 at full time, but Elche goalkeeper Tonu was the Franjiverde hero, saving two penalties from Yuste and Gilvan as Elche scored all four of theirs. In all 20 Elche players were involved as coach Fran Escriba gave almost everyone a chance to shine.

That same opportunity for all players, new and old was in line with Elche’s 1 – 3 defeat at the hands of silky Benfica at the Martinez Valero on Wednesday evening. Before the new Illicitano team could get going the fast-moving Portugese side had scored three in 30 minutes, all from their Brazilian star Rodrigo. The first two within four minutes of each other were from slick first-time passing, but the one that brought Rodrigo his hat-trick was a beauty. He burst down the right, cut inside Elche’s Albacar and from the edge of the area let go a fierce left-foot shot that flew into goalkeeper Manu Herrera’s top corner, no chance of stopping it: even the home crowd sportingly applauded, although it was clearly worrying how easily Benfica were breaking Elche down. For the Franjiverdes Coro showed he hasn’t lost his electric burst of speed, if anything he looked faster than last year, but was not helped from midfield where Generelo and Rivera seemed overrun by Benfica. Elche recovered somewhat in the second half, and just after a good headed goal from Bosnian Stevanovich brought them back into it, four subs entered on the hour, plus five more later and honours were even by the end of the game, if not the score. Benfica deserved to win the ‘Festa D‘Elche trophy, awarded to the winners of this game. Elche now have one more big game before the first La Liga fixture away to Madrid’s Rayo Vallecano on August 17th: that will be next Saturday 10th August at the Martinez Valero against another local rival, this time the relegated Real Murcia, now down to the lowly local league 2B. But the Murcians will no doubt be out to prove a point against their old higher-placed rivals, and it will give Fran Escriba more time to consider what is his best team as Elche return to the big time after 24 years. Mucho Elche!

PASTOR IS THE JEWEL IN THE TORRY CROWN FC TORREVIEJA.......1 LA UNION...................1 Around 250 fans watched Torry play out a 1-1 draw with Murcian div 3 outfit La Union, on a cooler than normal Saturday evening, at Nelson Mandela Stadium. As happened in the previous friendly, in which Torry lost to a scrappy last minute goal against Elche Ilicitano, it was a case of playing the strongest 11 in the 1st half, before introducing squad players and trialists in the 2nd half. Included in the starting 11 were new signings Eric (striker) and Carlos (keeper), both from Almoradi, and defender Valdeolivas who has signed from Pinitar. Torry started the match brightly, and could have gone ahead on 15 mins, when a powerful Dani header from close range agonisingly missed the target. Five mins later, 2 ex Almoradi players combined to give Torry a deserved lead. Livewire

Pastor (in my opinion he will prove to be a great acquisition) laid on an inch perfect assist to Eric, who wasted no time in slotting the ball under the advancing keeper. On the half hour mark, Maxi was adjudged to have pulled down a Pinitar player inside the penalty area. The resultant penalty was coolly despatched, sending Carlos the wrong way. La Union came close with a header at the start of the 2nd half, of which I spent mainly nipping down to the dug out trying to identify who the Torry replacements were!! Last seasons regular striker Gasch, saw his determined long range effort just clear the bar, then Alberto shot wide with only the keeper to beat, as Torry started to come to terms with the many new faces on show. Unfortunately, nobody told the ref (a local copper from Torrevieja) that the game was only a friendly, for the fussy match official clearly lacked common sense, by booking no less than 6 players throughout the game. On Wednesday 7 Aug, ko 7pm, Torry play another friendly against Murcian div 3 opposition, when UCAM Murcia visit Nelson Mandela Stadium.
