The End of an Era at La Siesta Church As the doors closed on La Siesta Evangelical Church last Sunday, another chapter in its communitycentric history came to an end, as Pastor Keith Brown delivered his final Sunday service.

Every seat was taken in the packed church, as the congregation came together to bid

farewell to their popular pastor. The warmth and fondness was more than apparent, as messages of thanks and praise came from every corner of the globe, with members of the community returning from as far away as Australia to be part of the event.

Keith first took over as the head of the La Siesta church some eight years ago, during which time he has become much more than just a faithful leader and teacher, but a friend and compassionate companion at times of need for many of his devoted flock.

Keith has not been alone during this time of course, and his wife, Cathy Carson, has been alongside him every step of the way, and so it was only fitting that Cathy should lead the congregation in a rousing rendition of one of the most popular hymns that tells the story of ”The Holy City”.

Taking the opportunity to enjoy some of the most popular hymns chosen by the congregation, even the youngest members paid their own tribute, and the children from the Sunday school presented Keith with his very own t-shirt so that he would forever be part of their story.

The senior elders of the church concluded the service with a presentation of their own tokens recognising the gratitude and love felt towards Keith, thanking both Keith and Cathy for their commitment to the church, and asking for God´s blessing into their retirement, presenting a framed picture of the church, a collage of some of Keith´s own moments, a handmade card signed by most of the congregation, and a personalised poem that summed up the entire mood of everyone in the church, one of hope, joy, peace and thankfulness for what Keith had contributed to them.

These gifts during the service were in addition to those presented at the elder´s meeting, when not only was Keith presented with a bottle of Champagne and a Formula 1 cake, a tribute to one of the many leisure activities that Keith is hoping to enjoy during his retirement, although he will still be playing a role within the church, but whilst being able to enjoy more time for himself.

Pilar council commits 3.8 million to complete La Paloma building

PILAR DE LA HORADADA COUNCIL has committed 3.8 million euro in order to complete the controversial La Paloma building adjacent to the Rambla with the objective of opening it as a new Mariana Baches Casa de Cultura. The decision was taken at an extraordinary plenary session last Monday, with eleven votes in favour and ten abstentions, during which, in addition to the approval of the project, the process of awarding the work was initiated.

Guardia Exhibition in Orihuela Costa

Babylon beach owners ask for 70 year extention A hundred families residing in these unique beachfront properties continue to wait for the courts to respond to their request to repair both the houses and the access roads and pathways to them, and as such the owners of the homes on Guardamar’s la playa de Babilonia, are now on the verge of one more summer.

Future of la Casa de Los Balcones in jeopardy

At a Torrevieja council meeting on Friday it was reported that, despite being protected in the General Plan of Urban Planning (PGOU) since 1987, la casa de Los Balcones may have it’s days numbered.

Much is currently at stake. The land (4,256 square metres with privileged views of the salt lake) is registered in the General Plan for hotel use. But now it seems likely that it will end up in the hands of the City Council with the owners arguing in court that the cost of refurbishing the property will be higher than the construction of a new building.

The future of this iconic old manor house, that gives its name to the area of Torrevieja in which it sits, is now the subject of a judicial decision that is calling for a report on whether it is cheaper to restore the building from its present state of ruin than it is to have it demolished, something that could allow them to tear down the building - which is what they have been looking to do for decades.

Between the 1980s and 2015 the building, one of the few examples of an ancestral agricultural home around Torrevieja lagoon, has been deteriorating. Between 2011 and 2015, the Council imposed fines in an effort to initiate urgent measures to ensure that the structure of the property was maintained, however the only work that was carried out was to the perimeter fence and to the shoring of the facade.

At the same time, the City Council has opened a file of expropriation accusing the owners of breaching their obligation to keep the property protected, something that is required by the Valencian urban law.

In addition, there was a judo exhibition, the Corps helicopter and the vehicles used by the Civil Guard for their daily work in the region.

A record number of participants took part last weekend in the tenth edition of the Half Marathon and 10K race for disabled athletes, 'Fundación Remedios Miralles' The winner of the Half Marathon for the fourth occasion was Iván Hernández Illán, from Pilar de la Horadada, while the women's category was won by Wafiya Benali The two races attracted more than 1,000 runners, with the first to cross the line Iván Hernández Illán of the Mobel Automenor club, recording a time of 1:07:32. In the female category Wafiya Benali of C.A. Nogalte - Puerto Lumbreras crossed the line in 1:25:00.

The councilors of Tourism, Youth and Sports, Pilar María Samper, Arantxa Martínez and Antonio Escudero accompanied the mayor, Ignacio Ramos, presented the prizes at the award ceremony.

Following the race a presentation was made to the Mayor, Ignacio Ramos recognising the achievement of 1,000 runners in this tenth edition and the excellent organisation of the City Council and the Sports Department for the event.

Two companies, Grupo Clave Sanitaria SL and Grupo Casaverde, submitted tenders for the management of the home. Casaverde now has a period of six months to carry out the works to refurbish the centre and is obliged to open to residents within nine months of signing the contract, which is expected to be formalised in the coming weeks.

The Casaverde Group will manage the "Residencial Villa de Catral" Senior Citizens Home, the largest such facility in the area, with a capacity of 264 residents. They were awarded the management contract, which will run for a period of 40 years, during the town council plenary meeting on Friday.

While the Royal British Legion Concert Band played to a great applause from the audience inside, a parade was lead down to the Plaza by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums, the RBL standards and members of the RBL.

In winning the concession, Grupo Casaverde will pay a fee of 30,000 euros per year to the municipality, in addition to assuming the Real Estate and other municipal taxes, which will mean an income of more than 34,000 euros a year to the municipal budget.

Following the bankruptcy of the original builder, who left unpaid hundreds of thousands of euros to small companies in the region, with this new contract, Grupo Casaverde has committed to outsourcing work valued at least 490,000 euros to merchants who were affected by that situation. The council say they hope that the opening of the facility will serve as an economic revival for the municipality of 8,000 inhabitants.

Orihuela Coastal Walkway closed Casaverde awarded management of Catral home

The Party in the Plaza unfortunately had to be cancelled on Easter Sunday due to the bad weather but took place last Sunday and was yet another great success as Casey Shaddock, President of the Plaza and Stevie Spit, pulled out all the stops once again to raise funds in support of 2 charities, this time the RBL Poppy Appeal and the Franciscan Men’s Home in Gandia.

Large stretches of the Coastal Walkway betwen Cabo Roig and La Zenia Beach has been closed because of serious damage to the structure.

Rain and storms during the Easter period have completely wrecked parts of the path rendering it completely unsafe to pedestrians.

The walkway is a great favourite with residents and holidaymakers alike and is regularly used by many hundreds of people on a daily basis.

Drugs-Fuelled madman Ricardo stars in Mafia Movie Merch alongside bodyguard wife

"It involves cocaine and hashish gangs - and a segregation comes about with disagreements - leading to an internal war going on," said David.

"MI5 are looking in - and The Godfather can't trust people - leading to him getting two Bodyguards," said David.

Merch is planned to go on Online Movie platforms this year.

"There are scenes to be filmed in May, with the film scheduled for release this year," said kickboxer enthusiast Yvonne.

"Merch filming scenes were also shot at Torrevieja harbour, with filming possibly taking place in Pinoso," said Yvonne.

Playing the roles of crazed guy Ricardo and a Bodyguard in Merch couldn't be further from that of real life characters.

As Stone gets closer to the truth, those who hide in the shadows are slowly pushed into the light, in what unfolds into a showdown between good and evil - that determines the fate of thousands of innocents.

David, married to German born wife Yvonne, who plays a Bodyguard to The Godfather, are proprietors of Venture Fleet, in Los Montesinos, Alicante.

Filming by Swedish film director Normann Bjorvand has taken place in Torrevieja, Quesada, Santa Pola, Altea, and Callosa de Segura, with additional shoots currently being filmed.

"The Godfather's son wants to go into other 'areas' - there's a gap in the market - and wants to bring it to Spain," said David.

‘Letters from the Canary Islands’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.

He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

For the Love of Cheese Many will have read stories and been taught about one of the UK’s national heroes, Horatio Nelson; that brave son of Norfolk who taught the Spanish a thing or two during his famous battles, his “mesmerising personality”, complicated love scandal and heroic death. The stories surrounding Nelson are, of course, based upon the British point of view. Are they true? How about looking at Nelson from the Spanish and Canarian perspective?

About 220 years ago, Admiral Nelson of the British Royal Navy decided to attack Santa Cruz in Tenerife to help himself to some gold and silver collected by Spanish galleons from the Americas, but was humiliatingly and satisfyingly defeated by the local residents. I guess this part wasn't stressed too strongly during school history lessons, was it?

The residents of Santa Cruz de Tenerife have long memories of their history and proudly re-enact an historical event each year on 25 July that reminds everyone of the Battle of Santa Cruz in 1797. This reenactment of this battle has taken place for many years in a variety of formats. Why was this battle so important to the people of Tenerife?

In 1797 the British Royal Navy decided to attack the port of Cadiz in Southern Spain, but Spanish warships drove the British away. By chance, the British Navy heard that Spanish treasure convoys from America arrived regularly at Santa Cruz in Tenerife, and sent a flotilla of ships under the command of the recently promoted Admiral Nelson. This attack force had 4000 men, nine ships and 400

guns, but the military on Tenerife led by Lieutenant General Gutierrez only had 91 guns and a mixture of 1700 militia and sailors. This looked to be an overwhelming attack force with insufficient military to defend the port of Santa Cruz.

Things did not work out as planned for Nelson, as the Tenerife commander was more experienced and particularly clever in managing his soldiers. Several British ships were sunk and many sailors were killed in this failed attack. This was also the battle when Admiral Nelson was shot in his right arm, and he had to be taken back to his ship where the ship surgeon amputated most of this arm with the help of some opium to lessen the pain in the middle of the battle.

Many British militias became trapped on the shores of Tenerife with no escape possible. Although 30 Tenerife residents were killed and 40 were injured; 250 British militia were killed and 128 were wounded.

The British asked for a truce and agreed to withdraw with an undertaking to do no further damage to the town or to make any more attacks on Tenerife or the Canary Islands. This was agreed by Lieutenant General Gutierrez, who also allowed the British to leave with their arms, but perhaps not Nelson. However, Admiral Nelson had lost so many ships that he did not have capacity to take all his militia back home, so the Tenerife General lent Nelson two Spanish schooners. This was a huge embarrassment for the British Navy and a resounding success for the militia of Tenerife in protecting their island. I doubt that much of this story has found its way into the National Curriculum syllabus, as it really does not show the British in a particularly good light.

There are also some interesting facts that are linked to the Battle of Santa Cruz, such as what happened to Nelson’s right arm after it was amputated? It was thought that the arm was thrown overboard after the on-board operation, as was usual during this period, but it seems that some keen-eyed Tenerife resident found this floating in the sea or washed ashore, and eventually Nelson’s arm ended up interred within the altar of the Cathedral of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This story has been challenged, but it has not been denied either! Also, the honourable withdrawal and truce led to a courteous exchange of letters between Nelson and Gutierrez. Later, Nelson sent a large cheese to Gutierrez as a token of his gratitude, which

was never eaten and is still on display at the Spanish Army Museum in Toledo in Peninsular Spain. Maybe the good General did not trust the British to send a cheese that wasn't poisoned?

No doubt the British will hope that people will forget the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1797 and the humiliating defeat that the brave people of Tenerife achieved over the British Navy. However, the residents of Santa Cruz in Tenerife are determined never to forget this momentous day in their history. Many wear faithful reproductions of uniforms and weapons of this historical period in all its detail of the battle in July.

Many might think that Tenerife residents would hate Admiral Nelson as he had planned to rob them and destroy their homes, but actually he became admired as he stuck to his word and the British Navy never returned to attack the Canary Islands. Indeed, there is one street in Santa Cruz that is named ‘Avenida Horacio Nelson’, which says a great deal about the island’s capacity for forgiveness, or is it amusement? Anyway, the Canary Islands still have Nelson’s arm in their possession, or maybe not, but it definitely has a smelly cheese as a result of this battle from long ago.

CHARLIE’S STORY Former star of hit show "The Only Way Is Essex" Charlie King, called Samaritans in 2011 when he was struggling with the demands of a highly stressful job, and the pressure to behave in a certain way: “I grew up with my mum and sisters, dad wasn’t around so I didn’t really have a male role model.

"I knew I wasn’t really like a typical boy. Rugby and football didn’t appeal to me, I was more interested in singing and dancing and I never really had a proper girlfriend.

“My mum has a successful business, and from a young age I was thrust into a business world, I felt under pressure to do well and had to live up to high expectations.

“I worked non-stop, and became obsessive about the restaurant – I wouldn’t share responsibilities, and had to be there every waking hour. I was highly stressed and struggled with anxiety.

“I felt I had no purpose, I was lonely. I started to get really depressed. I had no male friends, or a girlfriend. I remember walking my dog, and my head feeling like it was going to explode.

"I reached the point where I felt I couldn’t go on, like there was no point in my existence. My family didn’t know what to do or say.

“This was when I first called Samaritans.

Speaking to them really helped me to put my thoughts in order and gave me the reassurance I needed that everything would be ok. I called six or seven times in total.

“I also sought help through my GP, and joined a gym. Doing regular exercise gave me something to focus on.

“All these events made me realise I needed to become more open and let people into my life. I wish I had realised it is ok to be different, that I didn’t have to conform to a certain stereotype of how a man should be.

"I also realised the importance of living your life.

Work isn’t significant in the bigger picture of things.

“I wish I’d talked about my problems at a much earlier stage. I realise that if I had spoken to someone I probably wouldn’t have got to the point where I was considering suicide.

"If I hadn’t called Samaritans, I honestly don’t know where I’d be today. I have my life to thank them for.”

Torrevieja Ladies Darts Organisation Ladies singles competition.

A final total of 34 ladies representing seven of the eight teams in the Torrevieja Darts Ladies Organisation came together to contest the ladies singles championship this season.

Unfortunately, some strong contenders were unable to make it this year and a few withdrew at the last moment but a tight run ship saw us get through 5 knock out rounds before eventually getting down to the last two contestants.

Semi-finalists: Lin Cousins- Friendly Chicas Beaty, Elizabeth Cowan- Gap Ladies, Simone de Lacy- Gap ladies – runner up Powell- Primadonas - winner The final was played the following week after the Player of the Year competition. and saw Beaty Powell as this year’s winner beating Simone de Lacy 4-2 (501, best of 7).

Thanks also to Pam, Kim and Simone for organising and running the competitions. A big thanks also to our hosts, The New Tavern, San Miguel and to Sheelah Cooper who has repeatedly, and often single-handedly, organised all the tables and seating for the teams and finally to all those who came to lend support to their team players.

Player of the year: This was a new competition, replacing the previous award that went to the lady who had the most singles wins and 100+ scores combined.

The two ladies from each of the eight teams who were available to play and had the highest number of the singles wins for their teams for the season, were drawn against one another to determine the ultimate player of the year. A round robin contest saw players randomly drawn into groups of four to play each group opponent twice (501) totalling 6 games apiece.

This gave everyone fair opportunity to warm up and not be eliminated in the first game as would have happened in a straightforward knock-out draw. The winner of each group then

Easter Tennis Tournament at Campoamor Golf Despite the awful weather over the Easter weekend, the courts at Campoamor golf club were perfect for the tennis tournament on Easter Monday.

The American style tournament, meaning that players played a number of mixed doubles matches with different partners and opponents, was played in a very social atmosphere and was a mixture of a group over from Galway and regular club players.

AIDEN O'Brien and son Donnacha made it a family affair when winning the first Classic of 2019 on Saturday in the Quipco 2,000 Guineas on Magna Grecia at Newmarket.

"It's incredible," said trainer O'Brien, after landing his 10th career 2,000 Guineas win.

Mild mannered Irish ace O'Brien, who also saddled disappointing red hot favourite Ten Sovereigns, said: "I thought Magna Grecia would get the mile well, but he also has the speed.

"The win is down to a massive team effort. I feel most privileged to be part of racing. It's very exciting."

Jockey Donnacha said: "I was happy for most of the race and I was proud to be aboard - to win my father's tenth 2,000 Guineas. I am very lucky to be sitting on Magna Grecia."

Uae Jewel, tipped by The Leader, landed the Lightning Spear Newmarket Stakes: "It was pleasing in what is only his second race," said trainer Roger Varian.

Thursday April 25th saw La Marina travel to Horadada for a rearranged match from Monday 22nd. Points were 4 for and 8 against. Shots were 77 for and 88 against. There were two winning rinks, Maureen Kidd, Dave McGaw and Peter Parsons, 19 - 7 and Lesley Joynes, Shirley Hadaway and John Rae, 16 - 15. Lesley is one of our new bowlers and was in a winning team playing away for the first time. Well done Lesley.

Monday April 29th found La Marina away to

Greenlands. Points were 3 for and 9 against.

Shots were 87 for and 94 against. La Marina had one winning rink and one drawn rink. The winning rink was that of Barbara Forshaw, Carol Smith and Dave Hadaway, 23 - 10 and the drawn rink was Lesley Joynes, Mike Smith and John Morgan, 18 - 18.

V C L league May 1st La Marina were at home to San Miguel. Points were 7 for and 5 against and shots were 80 for and 78 against.

In the same league, May 3rd La Marina were again at home to San Luis. Points were shared at 6 each. The shots were 92 for and 85 against.

El Rancho Bowls Club Monday morning found the Buckskins playing their home Harrier League fixture against La Siesta Hornets. We had a splendid morning’s bowls and enjoyed battling the light blustery breeze as well as the Hornets play.

Buckskins took the rinks 3-2 and lost the overall shots by a small margin, hence 6 points each, a fair result for all. The Blenheims had Lions in the VCL, and they slipped to a a very competitive and close match against San Luis Wellingtons, who won 2-10 aggregate of 53-97 9-3 points and 84-77 shots.

Earls played at home and had a great 120 win with an aggregate of 99-64.

Meanwhile in the VCL league Quesada Lions played Emerald Isle Dukes Winners were C Parsons 21-12, E and enjoyed a win of 10-2 points and 97-53 shots. First of all I would like to congratulate all the winners of the Champion of Champions Tournament played 2 weeks ago under difficult conditions.

Thanks to our club winners for participating in what can only be described as good experience against better players. Some of the disciplines we had very close scores and it is a joy to watch and support these matches. Better luck next year Horadada.

On Monday in the Hurricane Division the Hawks were away to Emerald Isle Vulcans. A welcome change in the weather made it a pleasant mornings bowling. Unfortunately for us the result wasn’t quite as pleasant!

I do remember having a few smiles at some of the comments/advice being thrown about the green. All in a happy mornings bowling. We won on 2 rinks and lost on 3 with the overall shots going to Emerald Isle. Our winning rinks were: Irene Graham, Alan Miller and Terry Hucknall 23 – 12, Peter Davis, Mark Jukes and Barry Evans 20 – 12 Well done Guys. That gives us 1 draw, 1 win and 1 loss. The final result was 80 shots for to 101 against giving us 4 points for to 8 against. Will have to do better Team Horadada.

On Wednesday in the VCL League we were at home to Monte Mar Lords and had a very close match indeed. Our Gents singles representative Mark Jukes had a very nail biting bowling competition throughout and just got pipped on the last end to lose by 1 shot.

We did, however, manage to win on 2 rinks and that was the pairs and the rinks and our winners were: Barry Evans and John Goddard 22 -11, Janet Jukes, Judith Simpson, Carol Linehan and Bryan Eatough 18 – 12. As the total shots was a draw, each team got 1 point each, giving us 5 points for to 7 against.

On Friday Horadada were in action again in the VCL League at home to San Miguel Deputies. This time was a much better result all round especially on home turf.

We won on 4 out of 5 disciplines and earned the overall shots. Our winning disciplines were: Ladies Singles - Carol Linehan 21 – 18, Pairs - John Bailey and John Goddard 17 – 12, Trips - Peter Davis, Les Davies and Roy Thomson 23 – 18, Rinks - Janet Jukes, Judith Simpson, Tracey Paffett and Bryan Eatough 24 – 10 Very well played to all our winners this week. Four-times World Superbike Champion Carl Foggy Fogarty who became the most successful rider in history, by clinching a 28th World Superbike victory at Albacete, returns to Spain.

WORLD SUPERBIKE CHAMPION Carl Fogarty returned to Spain in April at Alhaurin El Grande, Andalusia, nearly two decades after retiring from the sport.

"I had a great few days in April riding with the lads - and a few off-road legends," said Fogarty, 53, MBE. During 1993-99, Albacete became the sole Spanish Superbike fixture; a period that coincided with the four title-winning seasons of Fogarty (1994, ‘95, ‘98 and ‘99).

Fogarty - 'Foggy' - won at Albacete six times, recording doubles in 1993 and 1994, followed

by Race 2 in 1995 and 1998.

The success in 1993 was the first of 16 career

doubles for Fogarty.

World Superbike history was made in Spain, with the first world SBK event staged in the 1990s, in Jerez. Jarama, Albacete and Valencia have staged events since.

In the Millennium year 2000 Spain's WorldSBK event took place in Valencia at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit.

With 22 races to its name it remains the Spanish circuit to have hosted the most World Superbike races.

In the second Albacete race in 1995 Fogarty became the most successful rider in history by clinching a 28th World Superbike victory.

Fellow Lancastrian, Blackburn born Fogarty, awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Central Lancashire, based in my home City Preston, retired in 2000, having won 59 races.

Away from the Superbike circuit in retirement Fogarty's pastimes include skiing.

THE GENZON GOLF CLUB will be the venue for the 25th anniversary of the Volvo China Open when the event comes to Longgang, near Hong Kong, on May 2-5.

"We were delighted with the turn out of both entries and spectators for our first Adventure Golf Spring Cup held at Greenlands Sport Complex," Enrique told me.

"Forty participants took to the golf course, of which there were three winners in the two categories, divided into men and women players," said Enrique.

"The mens category was won by Mr Olson, who had a score of 48 strokes," said Enrique, who has played a lead role in turning Greenlands into a top venue in the Vega Baja since taking charge of the complex in June 2018.

The surface of a green, colour, density and speed is a combination of the maintenance of the surface but also, about the maintenance of the root-zone.

A healthy grass starts from healthy roots. Soil compaction can be a severe problem resulting in restricted root growth, lack of water infiltration into the soil, loss of resilience, weed invasion, disease problems and decline in turf quality.

Hollow Tining is used to prevent damage from an excessive soil compaction. It is also very important to provide the needed drainage, for water infiltration and aeration at the root-zone and is done during the warm season when temperatures favour rapid shoot growth and coverage of the turf openings.

The use of sand on greens is essential because it helps to digest the organic matter, enhancing the aeration of the root-zone, speed on greens and better recovery from pitch marks. In order to minimize the disruption to golfers, hollow tinning is usually carried out in 2 consecutive journeys so that the 18 greens are aerated in the same week.

The surface smoothness restoration process includes top dressing, drag matting and rolling and greens are normally puttable after 3 days with rolling putting surface within 10 days.

However in reality depending on a number of factors such as day and night time temperatures and watering it usually take greens 15 to 20 days to return to a perfect condition.

There you have it…so when you next question the parentage of the green keepers you will understand the reasons just a little more.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society Beautiful Spring weather greeted the eleven members (2 new ones) and two guests for El Plantio 2's monthly medal. Unfortunately, the scores returned did not quite take advantage of the conditions as serial winner Alistair did not quite match his previous performances and second and third were also worse than other medal returns.

Final humilation as Torry drop to bottom of league CD Torrevieja.............2 Villena CF...................3

So, the inevitable has finally been confirmed. Following last week’s humiliating home defeat at the hands of CFI Alicante, Torry are now officially relegated from the Preferente division into Regional football. A combination of 5 managerial changes, a 6 point deduction as a result of an

avoidable and naive managerial decision, plus an unbelievable number of player comings and goings, have contributed to their downfall.

When you consider that last season’s survival was only achieved courtesy of Calpe´s expulsion from the league, then perhaps the writing was always on the wall. Oh, and let´s not forget the small matter of a dodgy takeover, by an individual who had previous

wrongdoings at a senior club north of Valencia. Alarm bells should have rung way back last summer, when a number of fans expressed serious doubts on social media as to this individual’s integrity, but alas they fell on deaf ears.

As such, the match against fellow relegation club Villena, has developed into a meaningless end of season kick about. Although rock bottom and a point behind their hosts, Villena have recorded a few victories in recent weeks. Ironically, the last time Torry won a match was on 9 December last year, some 17 matches ago, when the opposition were no less than Villena.

The game itself saw Torry off to a positive start with early pressure resulting in Augustin forcing an early save from Nando in the Villena goal.

The home side were certainly the quicker out of the blocks and when Thales crossed for Xavier to volley into the back of the net with just 9 minutes played the prospects of a first Torry win in 2019 looked a definite possibility.

But Football is never what you expect and as the game wore on the visitors, despite sitting rock bottom of the Preferente table, showed that they too are capable of putting their opposition under pressure.

CD Montesinos relegated in final game defeat at Callosa

By Andrew Atkinson CD Montesinos have been relegated after losing their final game of the 2018-19 season in the Valencia 1st Regional Group 8.

The Los Montesinos based club lost 1-0 against Callosa Deportivo B in a game that saw Callosa net an added time winner on Saturday evening.

CD Montesinos were promoted two seasons ago to the 1st Regional G8 for the first time in the club's history.

CD Montesinos began the 2018-19 campaign winning their opening two games with emphatic 4-1 wins against CD Altet and Monovar CD, respectively.

ALFIE’S GOLF SOCIETY Hacienda Riquelme 25th of April 2019

Gold Division Winner Steve Barlow with 31 points 24 members and guests from Alfie’s GS played at Hacienda Riquelme. The course was in good condition, and the greens were excellent, however the wind decided to show up just to bring us back down to earth, along with thick pampas grass and plentiful bunkers, this was not going to be a high scoring day. In fact no one beat the course on the day!

Our winner of the day in the gold division was Steve Barlow with a score of 31 stableford points.

Second place went to Joe Murphy also with a score of 31 points.

The winner of the silver division was Rachel Lee with a score of 35 stableford points.

Second place went to Stuart Armour with 27 points.
