TORREVIEJA EXPO ROCKS IN THE AUDITORIUM

The fifth edition of Expo Torrevieja attracted more than 8,000 visitors over the weekend.

The largest International event of its kind took place in the foyer of Torrevieja's International Auditorium, with many of the visitors entering the auditorium for the very first time. Offering free park-

ing for almost 500 cars, free admission, more than 70 Businesses and services, displays plus Valencia's only International Clubs and Associations meeting point; Expo Torrevieja continues to grow in popularity.

Organisers Kjetil Hamre and Keith Nicol started the event in 2017 with the mission being

to offer supplies and services to enhance the quality of life of those living here on the Southern Costa Blanca.

Having both been involved in the media world for many years, Keith and Kjetil's mix of contacts within the Scandinavian and British/Irish communities, give the show a very eclectic feel, as they try to offer a little of everything,

rather than just a simple property or Homes and Gardens show, which they add, still have their place in the local event marketplace.

Businesses exhibiting included home and garden, awnings, insurance, jewelry, bridal wear, gifts and accessories.

Keith said: “We are very excited to announce that we are in the process of making Rock Against Cancer a new non-profit, fundraising association, with our aim being to make this the largest independent, International NGO in Spain. This year we celebrate the tenth anniversary of Rock Against Cancer alongside the 30th anniversary of Munroe's Rock Pub, so it's an exciting year.

To celebrate we have planned two nights of concerts at Eras de la Sal in Torrevieja, on Saturday June 15, a heavier rock and punk night, while on Sunday 16, it's a bit more pop

and rock and roll.”

Orihuela - Acity where political ego’s are placed before the interests of the people THE PARTIDO POPULAR ‘BOTTLES IT’ AS DAMASO APARICIO IS MOVED UPSTAIRS Despite the investigation of fraud currently being carried out by the Ministry of Health into the affairs of Orihuela mayor Emilio Bascuñana, who is alleged to have drawn a salary from the department for over 4 years, despite not carrying out any work, the Partido Popular have now confirmed that he will head the party list going into the municipal elections in May. The announcement was made during a visit to the city on Monday by Teodoro Garcia Egea, number two of the national PP, as he strolled through the Palace of the Marquis of Arneva, the Plaza Nueva, prior to the pair taking lunch at the Casino, along with local PP President Damasio Aparicio, the provincial president José Císcar and the president of the Diputación, César Sánchez.

The party was out in force in Orihuela where, following a deep split that has divided the local group for over two years, the objective was to show a united front with the two antagonists Bascuñana and Aparicio walking side by side.

Only last week Aparicio announced that he too would run for the leadership with the support of the local electoral committee, but in direct contravention of the national party’s wishes, so his subsequent withdrawal, just hours before the announcement that he will instead be selected to run as a Provincial deputy seems just a little too convenient to swallow, rather than the coincidence that they all claim it to be.

But Garcia Egea insisted that the party in Orihuela is "united", that there is no internal war and that he supports Bascuñana,

despite the ongoing investigation by Health that could result in him being subjected to a future judicial investigation.

However, after Aparicio’s recent announcement that he would run for mayor, considered by many party activists to be a direct challenge to the party's president, Pablo Casado, should he now be elevated to the Provincial Government, the question is “after doing a complete U turn and seemingly abandoning his local principles, just how far can he still advance up the greasy pole of political life?

SOLIDARITY FOR WOMEN International Women’s Day was marked up and down the coast on Friday with events held by most town councils across the region.

There was a concentration held outside the town hall on Friday morning in Torrevieja while in Rafael a statement was read out in the Plaza de España by the councillor of Social Services, Noemí Cutillas.

She said that “We stand here so that women can be free and so that sexist violence can be highlighted as a matter that concerns everyone throughout the whole of society.”

In Orihuela City the mayor and many of his councillors marked the day on the town hall steps during the late afternoon although, elsewhere in the municipality, earlier events had been held by AE Orihuela Costa at the Playa Flamenca Town Hall and by the Community Care Association in the Campoamor Drop in Centre

where the occasion was held as a day of celebration featuring a Tai Chi display, an arts and craft exhibition, games, raffle and food.

There were events at L'Algeps and la Plaça de Baix in Elche, and over 5000 people attended a protest in the centre of Alcoy. A further 500 people marched from Plaza de Los Luceros in Alicante, while a similar number protested in la Plaza del Mercado, but despite the rallies unions and the convening organisations say that, apart from a greater visualisation of the problem, hardly any concrete steps have been taken toward ensuring the equality of the woman in her workplace, personal and family life.

Also in Alicante there were strikes in several stores, including Springfield, Carrefour and Stradivarius, as well as the General Hospitals of Alicante and Sant Joan, where workers went out to the streets to show their own solidarity.

Courtesy Visit by new Guardia Commander The new Head of the Provincial Command of the Civil Guard of Alicante, Colonel José Hernández Mosquera, paid a courtesy call on the mayor of Torrevieja on Thursday where the two discussed matters of security in the province.

Following the discussions Snr Dolón presented Colonel José with a salt boat, which he described as a symbol of Torrevieja craftsmanship. The new chief then toured the facilities of the Civil Guard Barracks in the town

Getting ready for St Patrick Saint Patrick’s Day is on Sunday (17th March) and Cabo Roig is about to turn green. The 10,000 to 12,000 people who will turn up to join the celebrations will be in for a big treat because this parade is going to be bigger and more colourful than ever before. This year’s Grand Marshall is Big Joe Egan the famous Irish Boxer turned film star with over 25 films to his credit.

So, what’s so different? There is a craft market in the parking area near the medical centre on both the Saturday and Sunday.

There will be face painting outside Banco Sabadell, the Depot and outside The Bay (the barbers on the back of the strip) from 1pm.

The stage and VIP seating area will be close to the Trinity and there will be plenty of music, acts, shoot-outs and fun from 1pm onward. There will be a magician mingling in the crowd from 1pm also.

You won’t get bored, you will be entertained like you have never been entertained before.

Arrive early, but remember that it does get cooler in the evening after the parade so make sure to wear an extra pair of socks and a vest.

In the parade itself there will be many performers never before seen in Cabo Roig. One group will travel all the way from Valencia to participate.

Most importantly wear something green but don’t worry Sophia Alvarez (Orihuela Councillor for Tourism and foreign residents) has provided free green Banderas for everyone, they will be available at the stage area from 1pm.

There will be a colourful group of stilt walkers, mirror people, the most stylish punk rockers you have ever seen, angels and demons, pimped up golf buggies, marching bands, retired GAA

Warm clothes, a green Bandera and some face painting and you are set for the best day of the year so far.

Such is the growing popularity of the parade that acts will be travelling to attend from as far afield as Valencia

A river of plastic waste in Guardamar

Plastic waste is just one more unwelcome element that congregates at the mouth of the Segura River.

Once again the accumulation of this dangerous and harmful product has been denounced by the Association of Friends of the Wetlands of the South of Alicante (AHSA), which on this occasion seems to have attracted a response from the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS), the organisation responsible for the cleaning of the river, which moved in to start removing the mountain of waste last Wednesday.

CHS have focused their efforts in an area between Orihuela and the estuary in Guardamar where they say that the build-up was caused by "the rains that occurred between the months of November and December 2018", after which there was an increase in the weeds which trapped the plastics at a number of different points of the Segura.

The CHS plans to undertake cleaning services in Orihuela, and in the Azud de Alfeitamí (Almoradí), in Benijúzar, at the bridge in Rojales and in Guardamar del Segura. Afterwards, the waste materials are separated and the extracted waste will be transported to the landfill.

In its letter of complaint, the environmental group

said that there was "a moderate optimism with the change of attitude of the new leadership of the CHS with respect to the problem of discharges of plastic waste in the Segura river but “To solve the problem, we must attack the question at source, because it is useless simply to collect and clear the garbage time and again.

People must be prevented from dumping solid urban waste, and even animal carcasses into the river if we are to clear up this matter.”

In their letter, Friends of the Wetlands say that they welcome a statement from the current president of the CHS who has expressed the clear will of his administration "to install devices for the retention of floating waste in the main hazards of the region, as requested by AHSA through its petition to the European Parliament.”

The complaint was brought to a head last week following the report by a 30 year old woman of an attempted rape as she claims to have been dragged by a man at knifepoint toward the buildings, which are situated close to the CEIP Los Pinos School. Luckily a neighbour heard her screams and stopped with his van, so the aggressor ran away.

WHSMITH EXPANSION INTO CORVERA AIRPORT

WHSmith has continued its expansion the Spanish market with the opening of two stores at the AENA-operated Región de Murcia International Airport in Murcia.

“The numbers living on the site have been growing year on year and we are now concerned about their proximity to the local school,” said a local resident. “The teachers also share our concerns but neither the City Council, the courts nor the Police seem willing to take any action.”

One of the news, books and convenience stores is located airside.

WHSmith said it aimed to give the stores a “new look and contemporary feel” in line with AENA’s objectives for the new airport, which opened on 15 January.

The stores offer Spanish and international newspapers, magazines and books, as well as confectionery, drinks, sandwiches, travel essentials and digital accessories.

NGO 'ALIMENTOS SOLIDARIOS' CLOSES FOR LACK OF FUNDS There are 15 cleaning staff employed permanently in the centre plus a small number of temporary operators, who all claim that they have not been paid by Netalia Servicios Integrales y Raspeig, who are subcontracted by the Generalitat Valenciana.

According to the union UGT, this failure to make the payments triggered the strike in the nursing home, as a result of which the 200 residents are having to make do with dirty towels and bed linen.

The local Charity 'Alimentos Solidarios' (Solidarity Foods) served their last meals on Friday, having now closed due to lack of funds. The president, Concha Sala, said that she expects the closure to be temporary, forced upon them because they have not yet received a Torrevieja Council grant which is their main source of income, and therefore they do not have the liquidity to continue.

The Generalitat Valenciana has ignored the problem by announcing that it is a dispute between the management company and its employees.

STRIKE INTENSIFIES IN OLD PEOPLES NURSING HOME Most of the workers responsible for the cleaning services in Torrevieja’s old people’s home have been on strike for approaching three weeks. Some minimum services have been maintained, primarily the laundry service, although piles and piles of the patient’s dirty clothing still continues to accumulate.

We understand that the strike is as a result of the non-payment of bonuses from last year which are traditionally paid during the second month of the year.

TWO HUNDRED PEOPLE DEMAND EVICTION OF SQUATTERS Over 200 people have put their names to a petition in San Pedro del Pinatar complaining about the incessant accumulation of rubbish by squatters who are residing in two half-finished, and 'Alimentos Solidarios' offers 219 daily meals to needy people and families in the municipality of Torrevieja, approximately 370 people of which 117 are children, amounting to a cost of between 6,000 and 8,000 euros per month.

In March 2018, the charity received 42,896 euros from the council to meet their annual expenses but, to date, the municipal aid due for this year has not yet been received. “Until this painful situation is clarified we have to make the difficult and painful decision to close our facilities,” she said.

Sala added that the volunteers will do everything possible to make it only a temporary closure and that they are still working to obtain grants that will allow them to reopen soon in order to continue providing food to so many families in the municipality.

Once again there was a full house at Harry’s bar in Quesada for The Royal British Legion, Torrevieja Branch, St David’s Day celebrations. After a fabulous Welsh meal which included lamb of course, there was poetry, singing, and plenty of laughter.

To start the entertainment a lovely moving poem was read out by the organiser of the day Mrs Dianne Budd, which was written by Mr Wm. Owen to his mother just before he went into battle in the 1st. World War and is now on display in the museum of Wales. It was made that bit more special because Mr Leo Wynn, his grandson, was present to hear it being read out.

There was some great soloist to keep us entertained and our packed room were a fantastic choir. Another fantastic St David’s day was had by all roll on next years.

‘Letters from the Canary Islands’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.

He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

DOG GATE Regular readers of ‘Letters from the Canary Islands’ will know that I have a love-hate relationship with Amazon. Although we have ‘Prime’ membership with Amazon Spain, I often wonder why I bother, since most of the products that I try to order, end up with the depressing notification “This product cannot be sent to the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla”, which can be very irritating. I have complained many times over the years, and pointed out that the Canary Islands are very much part of Spain, albeit with different tax regimes, and Amazon’s inability to supply us in the same manner as Peninsular Spain smacks of discrimination. Sadly, Amazon rarely bother to reply, but I always feel better for firing off yet another email. This week, we had yet another ‘Amazon incident’.

Our dog, Bella, is now an elderly lady of fourteen. She is totally deaf and partially blind, yet can usually reach the top of the stairs of our house before we can. Despite sleeping a lot nowadays, she has amazing bursts of puppy-like energy. Therein lies the problem, because in one of these frenetic bursts, Bella pulled a muscle in a front leg. Concerned to see her hopping around on three legs, we took her to see her vet who gave her a magic injection and tablets.

During the consultation, the vet not so tactfully mentioned that Bella was overweight; indeed, he uttered the dreaded word: “fat”. Sadly, until Bella’s weight is reduced, she will no longer enjoy her occasional favourite treat of a little pizza and a few chips. We were also advised not to let her run up and down stairs, since this may cause further problems for her legs.

Bella has access to everywhere in our home, so it was necessary to find something to block her access to the stairs unless we carry her up and down. I immediately thought of a ‘baby gate’ that parents use to stop toddlers going up and down dangerous stairs. I thought this would be easy to find, but a search of local shops, hypermarkets, baby shops, as well as second-hand shops brought only a blank look and a shake of the head.

The answer was clear, I would have to order the baby gate from Amazon even though I knew that it would be pointless to even attempt to order a baby gate from Amazon Spain, who seem to be the most chaotic of the Amazon stores that I deal with. I often find that I can order the same item from Amazon Germany or Amazon UK without a problem; totally illogical, I know. If all else fails, Amazon International will usually come to the rescue, despite additional postage costs. Sadly, this time, attempts with all Amazon stores failed, and the answer was the same; they would not delivery to the Canary Islands.

In despair, I looked at Amazon Spain and even though, as I had predicted, they would not deliver any of their range of baby gates to the Canary Islands, I found one ‘third party seller’ that would. It looked ideal; a baby gate that seemed as if it would work perfectly for Bella. I decided to order one; it was not available on Prime, and would cost an additional 6,99 euros for delivery. Fair enough, I thought; the order was accepted and my card debited.

Two days later, I received a very brusque email from the supplier telling me that they had cancelled the order, because they could not deliver to the Canary Islands. Apparently, the cost of postage exceeded the 6,99 euros postage that they had requested, and the true cost of postage exceeded the value of the product. They were not willing to supply the baby gate.

My response was swift and to the point. I had ordered the item in good faith from their advertisement on the Amazon website, and had agreed to pay their postage charges. They had already debited my credit card, and in doing so had completed a contract of sale. Would they agree to send the baby gate if I agreed to pay an additional charge to cover postage costs? In response, I received a very helpful

reply from the company, apologising for their earlier message, and confirming that they would dispatch the baby gate on their originally advertised terms and postage costs. It seems that it does pay to complain, and I look forward to receiving Bella’s ‘baby gate’ in due course.

The wider issue remains the same, of course, and that is the availability of products from companies such as Amazon should be similar across all the country. Yes, we live on an island, and an additional charge for postage is not unreasonable, but to be denied the range of products that are available on the Peninsular, simply because we live on an island or in one of Spain’s enclaves, is both unfair, and discriminatory. Indeed, for islanders, our choices are often limited and it is companies, such as Amazon, that could make a huge difference.

In the South Alicante Winter League, Quesada Pearls put on a sterling performance against Montemar Matadors winning the match 10-2 and shots 81-67. This means the Pearls maintain their 4th place in the league just one point behind San Miguel Beagles. Meanwhile the Diamonds had a tough match against La Marina Explorers, who won the match 3 rinks to 2 and the shots 96-71. So Explorers won overall, 8 points to 4. The Rubies

had a better result this week with a 6 all draw against La Marina Pathfinders, who won the shots 98-82 In the Southern League Quesada Swans played Horadada Royals. It was a competitive match with the Swans winning on 2 rinks while the Royals won on 3 rinks and also won the shots 99-77 so the points were 8-4 in favour of the Royals. The Swifts returned to Montemar this week to face the Matadors. It was a nail-biting match with 3 of the rinks decided on the last end. The Swifts managed a win and with the points 8-4 this means the Swifts will hold on to their 2nd place in the league.

Panthers had an incredibly close and competitive match against San Luis Ospreys. All of the rinks were decided on the last end and the final score was 2 rinks won by the Ospreys (16-14 and 17-15) with one rink drawn 15-15, so the points went to the Ospreys, 7-1.

In the Voyager Division Sputniks at San Luis lost by 98-87 with wins from Molly Russell, Tom Heaslewood and Johnnie Rider 32-10 and Joe Kocsis with Noel and Catherine Morrisroe winning 22-14. Phil Hasler with his last bowl managed to ensure an 8-4 victory for San Luis with his final bowl .

Pioneers at home to San Luis Romulans had a convincing 96-50 win picking up 11 points. Best wins came from Jo Elkin, Derek Smith and Rab Logan 22-7 and Bill Jordan, Ros Stockell and Vic Mahomet winning 23-9.

Monday’s game at home against El Rancho Palominos started innocently enough with both teams feeling their way through the first few ends.

Suddenly the Palominos imploded or was it that the Flamingos exploded?

The Cubs headed to El Rancho on Friday in what was the very first experience for many of the Cubs on the fast green.

El Rancho were off to a storming start winning on 3 rinks by the half way mark.

HORADADA BOWLS CLUB By Irene Graham A much better week all round for the Horadada club. On Monday in the Discovery Division we were away to Mazarron Mariners. A very closely fought match with only 1 or 2 shots difference in 4 of the rinks. The 5th rink was a bit different giving Mazarron the overall shots. This was a great boost for the Falcons especially playing away from home. Our three winning rinks were: Jenny Davis, Peter Davis and Terry Hucknall 19 18 Irene Graham, Mark Jukes and Bryan Eatough 17 – 16 Debbie Perryman, John Goddard and Sheila Westwood 18 -16 The final result was shots for Horadada 80. Shots against 87 giving both teams 6 points each.

Three matches remaining Falcons, all played at home. The next match is against the team that is below us in the table. Let’s start our great finally by making this one count.

The play was closer than the score might indicate, with the Pintos taking 4 rinks and the overall shots.

Meanwhile the Palominos were at Country Bowls taking on a strong Flamingos, who proved to be too good on their home mat. But it’s all a learning curve and sometimes you are up against too strong an opponent. Flamingos took all the available points with the palominos fielding a rink short.

R&A Rule Changes for 2019 Golfers of all standards have been affected by the R&A rule changes introduced as from 1st January 2019.

Playing the local courses here in Spain I can still clearly see players still taking incorrect drops and waiting to play in order than ready golf BUT on the positive side most golfers have embraced the opportunity to putt with the flag in the hole when on the putting surface without the risk of penalty.

On the professional circuit,especially on the USPGA tour the new rules haven't gone down too well and we have seen examples of players such as Rickie Fowler penalised for not dropping from knee height.

The biggest point of issue appears to be the following rule: “You cannot have your caddie or your partner standing behind you once you begin taking your stance”.

A number of players have been penalised for infringing this rule (or how it is interpretted) resulting in almost a player revolt and the commissioner of the tour having to write to the players.

This will have some way to run and we will keep you updated with the outcome accordingly but meanwhile we still advise all players to recheck and apply these new rules of golf.

The fixture was held at Vistabella where the course played well and the weather excellent, there was some very good scores returned with several over the mid 30 points. A small slip up by one of our lady members took 6 burly golfers and a lot of raking to put right, luckily there was no damage caused.

Results on the day were, nearest the pin on the par 3's were Chris Waddington and Michelle Evans (3). Nearest the pin in two was Nigel Wright, best front nine Rob Vaughan and best back Nigel Wright.

The night started with Jackals taking the first two trebles through Andy Rutter D1 and Phil de Lacey D2. Sid Cross with D20 pulled one back for the Pirates.

The doubles began with Pirates taking the first double with Jeff Ward D19 and then Andy Rutter D10 and Lee Maiden D10 making the score 4-2 in favour of the Jackals.

The Jackals sealed their victory starting with three straight singles.

Andy Rutter taking the first, Then Hugh Galleway winning a close best of three against an unlucky Ray Sanderson who hit 180. Then Lee Maiden completed the three games for Jackals.

Yvonne Rouffignac and Sid Cross then put some respectability to the score for the Pirates before Paul Miller took the last game of the night for Jackals. A big thanks to Phil and his team for an entertaining evening.

Carp-R-Us Fishing Round three of the Carp-R-Us Spring Series was fished at the Embalse de Beniarres. With the weather of late being warmer it was hoped that the fishing would be good but the day of the match was colder with a strong wind and although the weights were OK, this probably affected the fishing. First was Alan Smith with 11.70kg caught using pole and paste tactics, second was Steve Collins with 7.55kg using feeder and corn, third Terry Screen (7.20kg, pole and paste) and fourth Tom Marshall (5.10kg, feeder and corn).

Native River looking for the double at Cheltenham

NATIVE River is out to repeat his success of last year in the Cheltenham Gold Cup for trainer and former farmer Colin Tizzard.

“Native River has probably got the better chance," said Tizzard, who also saddles Thistlecrack, a former King George winner, and Elegant Escape, the Welsh National winner, on March 15.

"On their day, Thistlecrack and Elegant Escape, if everything went right for either of the two, they’d have a chance," said Tizzard.

Ante-post betting has Presenting Percy, last year’s RSA Chase winner, and Clan Des Obeaux, who won the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day, ahead of Native River.

National Hunt’s biggest week The four day Cheltenham Festival gets underway on Tuesday March 12, with the pinnacle on Friday March 15 - Gold Cup day.

The Magner's Cheltenham Gold Cup is a race to whet the appetites of racegoers worldwide with top class horses on show within the National Hunt fraternity in the Sport of Kings.

Native River, winner in 2018, returns to defend his crown, Might Bite, Irish fancied Presenting Percy, trained by Willie Mullins, and Clan Des Obeaux, are amongst the star line up.

"Clan Des Obeaux has had a great season," said Nicholls.

Irish trainer Joseph O'Brien saddles Sir Erec (1.30) in The Triumph Hurdle, notably backed down from 6-1 to 11-10: "Sir Erec shows plenty of speed, and has stamina", said O'Brien.

Jockey Mark Walsh said: "Hopefully he'll show up at Cheltenham in good form."

Back at the end of October, Torry were good value for their 2-0 victory over Aspe at Nelson Mandela Stadium, which quite alarmingly was the last time that long suffering fans had witnessed a home win.

Torry started the match inside Las Fuentes stadium brightly, earning 3 corners in the opening 2 minutes. From the 2nd of these corners, Tomy´s powerful header forced an acrobatic save from the impressive home keeper Riqui. But as has often happened this season, poor defending has been their undoing. When on 16 mins an unmarked Viri picked up a

loose ball on the edge of the box, he was given oceans of space to pick his spot, before unleashing an unstoppable drive which beat Cristo all ends up.

Battle as they may, Torry couldn´t get back on equal terms before the interval.

It´s criminal that for all their 2nd half dominance, they just couldn´t convert statistics into goals. They did score one though, on 53 mins, courtesy of a speculative Thales shot, which took a wicked deflection off defender David, before wrong footing Riqui as the ball rolled across the line.

All in all, Torry deserved more from a game in which the host’s keeper was without doubt man of the match. There is a bye for all teams in the Preferente league next weekend, giving Jesus Ruso a chance to become more acquainted with his new squad.

Next up for Torry is a home match against 2nd in the table Hercules at Nelson Mandela Stadium. This will presumably be on Sunday 24 March, although it´s strongly recommended to check the club website for confirmation of date and ko time.

PLAYA FLAMENCA Walking Football Competition On Friday 29th March The Play Flamenca Walking Football Club will be holding its annual walking football tournament in honour of Keith Wightman a past player.

Phil’s pressing all the right buttons Racehorse trainer Phil Kirby, a player at Preston in the midnineties when David Beckham was at Deepdale, and who booted football into touch - heads for the Cheltenham Festival next week. Leader racing columnist Andrew Atkinson reports.

WHEN it comes to name dropping in football they don't come much bigger than David Beckham.

"I was a Preston North End at the same time as David Beckham," said Phil Kirby, racehorse trainer, who is heading for the Cheltenham festival next week with some of his stables stars.

Fellow Lancastrian, North Yorkshire trainer Kirby was at Deepdale in the youth team when icon Beckham was on loan from Manchester United in the mid nineties.

Kirby, a qualified farrier and former jockey, heads for the Cheltenham festival with stable ace Lady Buttons.

"Lady Buttons had been a star," said Kirby.

"She is very straightforward, a nice character and a proper workhorse, with so much speed - rapid," said Kirby.

"After football racing was always something I wanted to do," said Kirby who has a 50-strong string of horses at Richmond, north Yorkshire.

"Lady Buttons has been a star for the last few years," said Kirby ahead of the Cheltenham festival which takes place 12-15 March.

"She is entered in both the Champion Chase and Mares Race, with the latter looking likely the race she'll go for," said Kirby.

"Let's see how things pan out," he added.

Kirby woos about Lady Buttons: "She has natural ability, and handles a cut in the ground.

"She jumps really well and knows where the winning line is.

Kirby “I was at Preston when Becks was there but I decided it was racing for me.”

She goes best over two miles," said Kirby.

Kirby, who helped his father during his teenage years in the greyhound circuit, something that has aided him well in his chosen racing career two decades on, has a plethora of entries at Cheltenham.

Whoshotthesheriff is entered in the Skybet Supreme Novices Hurdle; *Lady Buttons is entered in the OLBG Mares Hurdle and Niven is entered in the Close Brothers Novices Handicap on March 12.

Top Ville Ben is entered in the RSA Insurance Novices Chase, and *Lady Buttons in the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase on March 13.

Blaklion, set to run in the Aintree Grand National in April, has also been entered to run in The Pertempts Network Final Handicap at Cheltenham on March 14, and the Gold Cup on March 15.

"It feels as if things are coming together now. Fingers crossed," said Kirby.

Kirby, who left school as became an apprentice jockey, winning on his first ride, quipped: "It went downhill after that."

After three years in the saddle Kirby quit, turning his hands to become a farrier, of which still comes in handy when he occasionally shoes his horses.

Kirby also has entries at Cheltenham for Nautical Nitwit in the Sun racing Stayers Hurdle and Courtown Oscar in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge on March 14.

Wemyss Point and Sakhees City are both entered in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap on March 15.

It will start around 10.00am and finish around 5.00pm.To be held at the Playa Flamenca Sports Stadium. The C.D.M. Sports center.

This year the international teams coming over from the U.K. are :Coventry City in the community, Hartshill, and Hemel Town.

Local teams entered are Playa Flamenca A& B teams, San Miguel Strollers, Esquina Park Rangers, Deja Vieja, Hondon Valley Fliers and Portobello

The teams will compete in a knock out competition for the “Wightman Cup” This should prove a great day out so come and enjoy. or watch your team perform or get enthused to play ( no skill needed, but it helps, just 2 left feet for the over 55s) Free entrance for spectators with bar for drinks and snacks, and raffle to raise funds for Charity.
