The Board has also approved the extension of the zone destined to be used by car rental companies who are also increasing in number with three new companies this week declaring their interest in operating from Corvera.

In addition, the concession company, Aena, has now awarded licenses for four restaurants and 18 food and beverage vending machines to the operator Airfoods RestauraciĂłn y Catering SL. The establishments, which will begin to gradually provide service from the opening of the airport in January, will occupy about 1,200 square meters, distributed in the terminal building between the check-in and arrivals lobby and the boarding area of the first floor.

The four restaurant and food outlets will all provide different services: in the boarding area passengers will find the prestigious British brand Costa Coffee, which will provide a varied menu of drinks and coffees, as well as sandwiches, and pastries, muffins, croissants. In the same area Food & Goods will be located, a cafeteria with convenience store, at which users can purchase coffee and snacks.

boarding area by Subway, which will open in the summer season with a full range of salads customised by the customer, their typical sandwiches, breakfast and desserts. Meanwhile one further restaurant, Semba, serving burgers and other hot foods will be located in the check-in and arrivals lobby, so that all passengers and airport users will be able to access it.

The Costa Coffee and Subway brands will be moving their operations from San Javier airport.

The airport will also have a shop selling gifts, from the Submarine brand, another delicatessen, IbĂŠrica Negocentro and two WH Smiths, selling newspapers, books, snacks. There will also be two ATMs from Euronet 360 Finance.

Also at the meeting, the board gave their approval for the supply of electricity to Iberdrola in 2019 and 2020 at a cost of 333,417.78 euros, and to the contracting of a temporary merger of the companies Construcciones Iniesta, Pavasal and Construcciones Miguel Madrid e Hijos to create an extended tarmacked parking area for hire cars at a cost of just under 300,000 euros.

Traffic at the San Javier Airport will come to an end on 14 January with it then being diverted into the Murcia International Airport from the following day.

Early retirement leaves critical police shortage A

lthough it has been a historical claim of the Local Police unions for many years, from the 2nd January 2019 it is now about to become a serious problem for many municipalities The imminent approval by the central government of the new royal decree that will allow the early retirement of local police officers who, on reaching the age of 59, andwho have served for 37 years, will cause local municipalities here in the Alicante Province to lose, in one stroke, more than 200 agents.

Despite being aware of the impending legislation for some time there is no ‘Plan B’, so municipal forces will be required to operate with a shortfall until such time as they can recruit and then train the additional officers, in some cases a couple of years or more.

The cities said to be most affected are Alicante, Elche and Benidorm where there will be a more tangible reduction of local police officers.

In Elche, a total of 40 agents will be eligible for

retirement, from a force of 350 while in Alicante the figure is said to be 45 from a total of 580. The situation is rather worse in Benidorm where there are 229 local police officers. Current vacancies number 50 officers, a shortfall of almost 22% of the total establishment. When the Royal Decree is introduced there will be a further 39 officers who are eligible for retirement, 31 directly from 2 January, plus another eight during the course of 2019. This will leave just 190 officers to deal with a population of 66,831 residents but in practice, due to the floating population generated through tourism, 150,000 people during the low season, peaking to half a million in high season, just one agent for every 2,000 people.

In Torrevieja, the Local Police will lose nine of its 165 agents; in Alcoy, 11 of the 120 personnel that make up the workforce could retire; in Elda, seven of 119 and in Orihuela, 12 of 140 policemen.

In order to reduce the effects of this royal decree in terms of traffic, road safety and public safety, many municipalities have been demanding for

months that the Generalitat open the door to the appointment of temporary agents , a practice vetoed by the Consell in the new Local Police Coordination Law, approved at the end of last year.

However, just a few days ago, police commanders from across the Community met with the General Director of Security and Emergencies of the Generalitat to demand that he lift the veto, at least temporarily, to lessen the effect that will be caused by the reduction of agents.

Dead body found in San Pedro The dead body of a 77 year old man was found lying in a clearing in San Pedro del Pinatar on Wednesday afternoon. Identified as a local resident, Anselmo was found lying on his back on an embankment with a bicycle by his side.

German Hiker rescued by helicopter

Shortage of flu vaccine in Murcia health centres Adoption campaign for abandoned animals

Members of the Provincial Fire Brigade have rescued a 69-year-old man of German nationality last Wednesday morning after suffering a collapse and loss of consciousness while hiking with a group of people in the mountains between the municipalities of Rojales and Guardamar del Segura.

Numerous health centres have been without doses of the influenza vaccine in recent days, which has forced them to cancel and postpone appointments of patients who had requested the flu vaccination.

The problem, which has already been affecting some centres in Cartagena and surrounds, has now spread throughout the Region.

The Murcian Health Service (SMS) confirmed on Thursday the lack of the vaccine in some primary care centres but stressed that they have requested a further 5,600 units that will arrive next week. They say that they expect to restore by 14 December.

'Do not buy ... adopt and have a friend for life.' That was the slogan being used last week by Councillor Albaladejo who is responsible for the Protection of Animals in Pilar de la Horadada, at the launch of a campaign to provide homes to some of the 30 dogs and 70 cats that are currently being cared for in the Municipal Animal shelter.

The event took place just before noon in an area with difficult access, as reported by the Emergency Information and Coordination Center (CICU). As such it was necessary to scramble a helicopter from the Provincial Fire Brigade that was able to rescue, and then move the hiker to a safe area, where he was transferred to another medical helicopter operated by the Generalitat Valenciana which then moved him to the Torrevieja Hospital where he is understood to have made a full recovery.

The Hospital Quirónsalud in Torrevieja has launched it’s 2018 Christmas campaign that will take place from December 3 to 12. The campaign will consist of the collection of toys and Christmas sweets that will go to the NGO Solidarity Food and Cáritas Torrevieja for distribution to underprivileged children in the area. This initiative has the collaboration of the Association of Realtors of the Vega Baja (ASIVEGA) along with more than fifty associations operated by foreign residents in the area.

The campaign has been extensively publicised on social networks with the hashtags #CuidamosTuNavidad and # Xmas4all, using the slogan "Join the Solidarity Campaign of the Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja." Donors are being asked to take Christmas toys and sweets to the information point located at the hospital entrance.

The campaign will end on Wednesday, December 12 at 4:00 p.m. at which time there will be Christmas concert performed by the British ICA Choir.

Navy divers deactivate La Manga bomb An aviation bomb, thought to be from the 2nd World War, was deactivated in La Manga last Friday by a diver from UBMCM Specialists belonging to the Maritime Action Force, through the Operations and Maritime Surveillance Centre of the Navy, based in Cartagena.

San Javier arrests for drivers over the limit The Guardia Civil in the province of Murcia said that they stopped and tested almost 4,000 drivers for alcohol and drugs during the period 26 November to 2 December, of which 14 were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, 62 were reported for being over the alcohol limit and another 41 for driving while using drugs.

These results were compiled by the blood alcohol and drug verification unit during the patron saint festivities in San Javier last week, from 26 November to 2 December, and on different roads in the Region, during the same period.

In all cases, the affected vehicles were immobilised by the Civil Guard until their drivers were able to continue traveling, or until a second person, qualified for driving, was able to take charge.

The Guardia Civil continues to repeat its message to those drivers who, despite the campaigns and warnings of the Traffic Department, continue to drive after having consumed alcohol or taken drugs.

A spokesman said that surveillance will intensify during the bank holiday period and over the Christmas holidays when more than a hundred agents will be deployed.

Coastguard rescues 24 immigrants off Torrevieja

S

eventeen men and seven women, all of North African origin and seemingly adrift in two small zodiacs, were rescued on Friday and brought ashore in Torrevieja.

They were initially spotted during the early morning by fishermen, about 35 miles off the coast, and subsequently taken aboard the Salvamar Mirfak, operated by maritime rescue, following which there were delivered into the care of the Red Cross in the Torrevieja Salt Port.

Three of the 17 men claimed to be under 18 years old. They were accompanied by seven women, two of them minors, all from Libya and Algeria.

Two of them had symptoms of hypothermia and the rest were in generally good health.

The first of the boats was carrying nine people. It was attended a little before 11.15 hours by Salvamar Mirfak. The Maritime Rescue vessel then located a second boat with fifteen additional immigrants on board, which it rescued around

midday.

The Salvamar Mirfak then landed the 24 immigrants in the port of Torrevieja, where they arrived around 2.30 pm.

ATTACK OF THE CAR CLONES INCREASES BY 50% Cases of car cloning in London have risen by 50 per cent in just one year, with concerns that similar levels of cloning may be rife across the rest of the UK, according to official figures obtained by HonestJohn.co.uk.

The leading consumer motoring website analysed previously unseen Transport for London (TfL) data for the Congestion Charge zone and found

that the number of Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) being cancelled due to car cloning has soared.

In 2016 the number of PCNs cancelled on the grounds that the car was a clone was 1099; however, in 2017, this figure increased by 50 per cent with 1652 cases being recorded by TfL. Data for the first six months of 2018 show that car cloning continues to rise, with official figures up by a third on January June 2017.

The true figure for the number of cloned cars on the road in London is thought to be much higher, given the complex and lengthy PCN appeals process and the fact that the Congestion Charge zone only operates Monday to

Friday.

“This is just the tip of the iceberg,” said HonestJohn.co.uk’s Managing Editor, Daniel Powell. “On the grounds that it is down to the car owner to prove they are innocent, it would be safe to assume that the true figure for car cloning in London is significantly higher as many drivers will be unable supply the evidence TfL requires to cancel the PCN. “For those involved it can be a very frightening and stressful experience, because they will be threatened with crippling fines and court action if they cannot provide comprehensive proof that they were not on the capital’s roads. It also raises an important question - how many drivers simply pay the fine to avoid the stress?

Christmas is now official on the coast C hristmas is now officially underway on the Orihuela Costa with the switch on of the Christmas tree and lights at the Playa Flamenca Town Hall, as well as around the rest of the municipality.

The switch on itself was scheduled for Friday evening at 6pm although it seems that Iberdrola jumped the gun and mistakenly turned them on 24 hours before the planned event. Nevertheless the mayor duly arrived on the Orihuela Costa on Friday evening where he was accompanied by the 'usual suspects' from Orihuela City as well as our two Councillors on the Costa, Sofia Alvarez and Luisa Bone.

Spanish and German Carols were warbled and croaked in a variety of languages, none of them English but of course we expats are all saving our voices for the 'big un' which takes place next Saturday evening at 6pm, carols with the Royal British Legion Band.

The concert gets underway at the Playa Flamenca Town Hall at 6pm where there will be drinks and snacks for all those

who come along. Make sure you are one of them, and bring lots of your friends.

This is the first time that such a venture has been attempted on the coast so let’s all make sure that it is a success and becomes a regular event. And one other notable first this Christmas will be celebrated by our other popular local Band, Just Brass, who have decided that they will no longer play on La Zenia Beach on Christmas morning.

But don’t be downhearted because they will only be moving a mile or so along the coast to Campoamor which they hope, in due course, to make as popular a Christmas event as is currently the case in La Zenia.

Four arrests for the theft of a hundred bikes

T

he Torrevieja Civil Guard has arrested four men, three of Moroccan nationality, aged 20, 38 and 42 year and a 20 year old Romanian, as alleged perpetrators of seven ongoing crimes of robbery with force, three crimes of theft, one crime of receiving stolen goods and a crime of belonging to a criminal group.

The gang specialised in the theft of high end bikes, forcing entry into 62 buildings, storage rooms, garages and homes.

The Guardia says that they have managed to recover 79 bicycles, 5 bicycle frames and 3 cyclist helmets, valued at around 40,000 euros.

The group had well-defined functions, the two younger members jumping fences, walls and forcing doors and padlocks with extreme speed and

skill, whilst the other two men dismantled the bicycles with specialised tools and then sold them.

They are said to have stolen over a hundred bicycles in total with many already sold on.

Although the Civil Guard managed to identify them they say that it was very difficult to stop the thefts and recover the stolen objects as the members constantly changed their address, and even stayed at friends' houses so they were extremely difficult to keep track of.

They say that they do not rule out further complaints as some of the houses from which they stole are second homes and the owners have not yet filed a complaint.

Currently two of the men have been detained in prison whilst the other two have been released on bail.

With Christmas just around the corner the ASOKA animal rescue centre in Orihuela are holding their 8th Annual Christmas Concert, STAR On Saturday 15th December. “It’s not just a few people singing carols,” says Nick Moore the concert’s creator. “Star is an annual event with uplifting songs that reflect the passion with which ASOKA rescue over 800 animals a year.”

It is truly a special event. The concert has specially created projections with wonderful images of their volunteer work plus the happily homed cats and dogs that have been adopted across Europe in 2018.

Hondón Valley Branch – With Great Pride

T

he AGM of the Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion was a well attended evening, with both a new President and Chairman being elected.

The President is Lt Col Peter Lodge MBE and he gave a very interesting and poignant speech on his time in the Army and commended the Legion for its work with those leaving the Armed Forces but suffering from PTSD. Just one thread of the Legion’s support for its beneficiaries.

The Chairman, Neil Pavitt remarked on an amazing year, commencing with a District Award for Recruiting new members. In August he and Roger Kingham, as Branch Standard Bearer, attended the GP90 Commemoration Ceremony in

Belgium; and he then talked of all the social activities and fund raising events of the year. Neil paid tribute to the Committee and all the members who had helped support the Branch during the year in so many differing ways. The Branch members showed their pride by loudly applauding our Standard which now displays the Ypres Scroll – being one of only two Branches in the whole of Spain who attended the event. The other Branch being our colleagues from Mojacar.

Detail issued for the ‘time trial’ start of La Vuelta

meeting was held last week to prepare council staff and residents for the start of the 74th edition of La Vuelta a España which will get underway in Torrevieja on Saturday the 24th of August 2019.

The Gran Salida, which is likely to be a time trial, will be from Las Salinas de Torrevieja, the Natural Park with pink-hued water lagoons which the Councilor for Tourism, Fanny Serrano, said is excellent news, “but has very specific charac-

teristics that will require extensive work at the administrative level to put it everything in order, so that the start, which will be beamed across the world, is a big success".

Torrevieja mayor, José Manuel Dolón, added that " the time trial route from the lakes and through the town in particular, should be as safe as possible with the least inconvenience to both cyclists and to the residents in general".

The meeting was attended by tech-

nical officers from 'La Vuelta' as well as the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, the Councilor for Tourism, Fanny Serrano, Sports Councilor, Víctor Ferrández, and Councilor for NGOs and Volunteering, Carmen Morate.

At the end of the meeting, Serrano explained that "we continue to work together in order to ensure that the technical details will ensure that La Vuelta Ciclista a España 2019 has one of the best starts in its history".

Cruising off with SAAM Earlier this year, Paul Shard the SAMM Commodore, was forced to stand down due to health reasons. His replacement, George Noden, organised the collection of donations from the various groups and individuals that make up the SAMM family, all generously given to show their gratitude for Paul’s hard work and dedication during his time in the role.

It was agreed that it would be best to give the cash to Paul as he was due to go on a trip with his wife Cynthia to celebrate their wedding anniversary.

During the monthly SAMM meeting held in the Las Claras social centre in Los Narejos in November, George reminded everyone present of Paul’s achievements and contribution to SAMM and presented him with the gift. Cynthia received a lovely bouquet in recognition of her support for Paul during his tenure.

Both were extremely surprised and grateful to receive these tributes.

Veterinary assistance for stray animals The councilor of Protection and Animal Health of the City Council of Pilar de la Horadada, José Francisco Albaladejo, has said that a service will now be provided for stray animals in the municipality.

The purpose of the service is to provide veterinary assistance to animals that have been abandoned or injured on public roads, which will be carried out without any cost.

"With this we want to work closely with the pub-

lic, making everyone aware that should they come across a dog, cat, or any other animal that has been injured or abandoned on public roads they can take it to la Clínica Veterinaria del Sureste where it will not cost a single euro. Should the owner of the animal be located, however, it will be they who are required to take care of the veterinary cost."

In addition, any resident can call la Clínica Veterinaria del Sureste by telephone so that the animal can be rescued. The telephone number is 965 35 24 38, and it will be manned from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. There is also a 24-hour emergency telephone on 630 99 47 44.

Albaladejo stressed that this pioneering contract is intended to improve the quality of service and care for animals in Pilar de la Horadada.

Cruz Azul Christmas Fair Cruz Azul’s fundraising events helps pet owners on low incomes with vet bills and enables the charity to work with local communities to humanely control feral cat colonies.

The latest event, organized by A Time 4 A Change in Los Alcázares, proved very popular, raising 345€ for the charity.

The owners of A Time 4 A Change provided the venue and invited stallholders to take part in what turned out to be a very busy and successful event.

Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus provided some festive singing while shoppers browsed the myriad stalls, which included pottery, glass, curry kits, clothes, Christmas decorations, Christmas cards, customised signs, a tombola and a raffle.

t Phoenix International School, San Miguel del Salinas students were delighted to be invited to take part in a Christmas drawing competition this year.

Students had to draw or paint a picture with the title "What Christmas means to me".

Students entered two age categories, age 7-11 and age 12-16.

The winners were announced at the Vega Baja Christmas Fayre and the pictures are now displayed in the window.

The 2 winners (Taylor Driscoll Age 15 and Hari Coombes Age 8) who both attend Phoenix international School visited The Vega Baja Charity Shop on Wednesday 5th December to see their pictures in the window and collect their fantastic prizes.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.

What’s in a Name?

N

ow here’s an essential question to start the day. Are you sufficiently worthy to have an airport named after you, and presumably after you die? Alternatively, if you don’t consider that you meet these high specifications, do you know someone who does?

and positive impact upon the island of Lanzarote, as well as the other islands in terms of architecture and the environment. Despite this endorsement, I am also well aware that there will be others who will see the change of airport name as controversial.

I have never been too sure about the wisdom of naming airports after people. If, for example, I wish to fly to Paris, I wish to fly to Paris and not into the arms of someone called Charles de Gaul. Why do airports in the United States have to be named after past Presidents?

Over in Jamaica, I gather that the locals were not impressed when their airport was renamed after a part-time resident and author of novels about a British spy called James Bond. Many protested that the airport should have been named after a true islander, such as Usain Bolt, and not Ian Fleming.

Washington National Airport used to be called just that until it was renamed the Ronald Reagan Airport; surely it was already named after a President called Washington, so I fail to see the point. In any case, just think of all those costs associated with new signs.

John Lennon, Louis Armstrong, Mozart, Bill and Hilary Clinton, Marco Polo and even Robin Hood are all preserved for posterity in the names of some of the world’s airports. Interestingly, the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority has banned the official naming of British airports after famous people in the future, which I think is an excellent decision.

Despite some reservations, I was very pleased to hear that the island of Lanzarote will shortly be changing the name of its airport to Cesar Manrique. This name change has been requested by many residents for some time and was recently agreed by both the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, and the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo.

As an admirer of the work of Cesar Manrique, I believe this to be an excellent choice in honouring someone who made a considerable

Other airport naming controversies include renaming the island of Madeira’s airport to Cristiano Ronaldo International; I’m not too sure what the Spanish taxman thought of that particular honour. Anyone remember the footballer, George Best? In memory of both his onand off-pitch antics, Belfast City Airport has become George Best Belfast City Airport; what a mouthful!

Whether he is considered a footballing hero or not, many will be pleased to know that it has a rather good duty free shop, which might be thought appropriate.

Personally, I would much rather the airport be named after the place that I am travelling to rather than someone I have never heard of, or have no interest in. I am also very grateful that I am spared from flying to Margaret Thatcher International, but I guess whether or not you will agree will depend upon your own political point of view.

Last week the mayor and director of Social Services met Sue and her ladies to accept the donation and were extremely delighted to receive such a fantastic amount.

The money is to be distributed between buying a hospital bed, which will be used for families who require nursing care in the home and to buy food vouchers for the families of the town who are desperate at this time of year.

Quesada Bowls Club

The Winter weather has been very kind to us, with some very pleasant bowling in sunny and warm conditions this week.

On Monday Quesada Diamonds had a good mornings bowling with La Marina Explorers. Some close games on the rinks where Quesada managed to win both by two shots and ended the match winning on four rinks and losing on one rink. The shots were 91 to 90 in La Marina Explorers favour. Result was 8 points to Quesada Diamonds and 4 points to La Marina Explorers.

Also on Monday Quesada Pearls had a very successful match against MonteMar Matadors, winning on all of the rinks as well as the overall shots. The result was Quesada Pearls 12-0 points and 140 to 46 shots.

This means they are in third place in the league chasing Emerald Isle titans and San Luis Klingons.

Meantime, in the Explorer Div our Rubies came up against La Marina Pathfinders who were on good form and won the match 9- 3 and 94 -86.

In the Winter league on Wednesday, Quesada suffered a defeat with El CID winning 10 points to 2 with shots 91-75.

On Friday, there was mixed fortunes for the teams. The Swifts travelled to La Manga and put up a brave fight against a strong La Manga Crusaders team. The match ended with a win for La Manga 10-2 points and 112-64 points.

And Quesada Swallows played Mazarron Miners who won the match 8 points to 4 and 100 points to 88.

Just a reminder about our popular Saturday morning chicken drive which is open to visitors. Green fees are only 6 euros if you have your own shoes and bowls and 7 euros if you need to hire them. On Friday the broncos played host to Montemar Matadors and won 2 rinks, not a bad effort against a tough opponent.

In the afternoon the Rangers entertained Greenlands Elms and played well to share the points, 2 rinks and the overall shots with another lost by just the one shot.

In the afternoon the Raiders play host to Emerald Isle Saturns and put in a great performance, taking 4 rinks and drawing the fifth.

Meanwhile the Mustangs were at Vistabella playing the Picadors, who conceded one rink. The Mustangs took a further three and the overall shots a very good result at Vistabella. Marinas the Cubs attacked the game in their usual style. With two wins and a drawn rink the Cubs were ecstatic and although losing on shots and therefore losing 5 points to seven the Cubs were flying high.

Winning rinks were Chris Stevens, Craig Dyson and Andy Bryce and Joel Fernandez, Tom McDonald and Brian Kirk.

In the afternoon on Friday the Geckos travelled to La Siesta under the beautiful Spanish sun.

At halfway stage the Geckos were doing well leading on all but one rink. However, as the games progressed La Siesta played well, fought back and ended up winning on three rinks, losing on one and sharing the shots for a draw on one rink.

Horadada Bowls Club by Irene Graham SOUTHERN LEAGUE 2018/19 On Monday in the Discovery Division the Falcons were at home to Mazarron. On a lovely sunny day the team got off to a good start holding on to their lead throughout the match. The final result was we won on 4 rinks and lost on one giving us the overall shots. This gave us 10 points to 2 and 99 shots for to 74 against. This was a terrific result for us hopefully helping to move us up the difficult ladder. Keep going Falcons. Our winning rinks were: Tracey Paffet, Les Davies and Roy Thompson 19 – 17 Ron Odell, Margaret Odell and Bryan Eatough 20 – 18 Carol Linehan, Jack Linehan and Ken Barber 22 – 8 Janet Jukes, Mark Jukes and Barry Evans 24 -10 On Friday in the Southern League the Royals were away to San Luis Leopards. Again it was a beautiful sunny day great for bowling.

The Royals fought hard with a couple of the rinks being close but it was thanks to our winning rink with quite a large margin that gave us the overall shots. Our winning rinks were: John Goddard, Jack Linehan and Alan Miller 26 – 7 and the drawing rink, Tracey Paffett, Wayne Jackson and Terry Hucknall 16 – 16. The total shots were 90 for to 85 against giving the Royals 5 points to 7 for San Luis.

On Wednesday 5 Dec, our club held its annual Christmas Dinner in the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras. A great night was had by all, dancing the night away to the great and fabulous entertainment of the Blend Male Harmony Duo and guest star June Gibson. We would also like to thank the Queen Victoria Bar, Cabo Roig, The Rusty Nail, Campoverde, Debbie hair and nails, Campoverde and the Asia Restaurant Pilar for their kind donation to our raffle.

La Siesta Bowls Club

By Rod Edgerton Will he do it? Well Willie did Performance of the week came from Willie Mcvey in the Sputniks home fixture in the Voyager Division against San Luis Vulcans. With his rink losing on the final end by 3 shots his final bowl removed the Vulcans saving bowl and gained 5 shots to win his rink with Dot & Joe Kocsis by 2 shots and therby enabling the Sputniks to win the overall match by one shot, 82 shots to 81.The other winning rink came from Gary Randall with Sheila Millward and Jim Eastwood, so 8 points to the Sputniks and 4 to the Vulcans.

The Pioneers in the same Division played 3 matches and their best result was a 9-3 win away at San Luis Romulans.Two big winning rinks came from Doug and Fay Beattie with Norman Adcroft and Barbara Cooper with Tony Campell and Dave Laverick.The other 2 matches finished with 10-2 losses against Vistabella Buggies away and San Miguel Pointers at home.

In association with Sapphire Properties and Costa Blanca Green Fee Services For this months meeting the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 32 players visited the established course at Las Colinas taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

This event was our annual Christmas Competition which was a 4 person team event.

By Gail Willshire The Pointers played 2 matches this week with mixed results. The first on Monday against Vistabella’s Buggies resulted in a loss, 4 points to 8, 88 shots to 98. Of the 2 winning teams, the best result came from Paul Cutting, Lee Sinclair & Alan Campbell who won 24:16. Their 2nd match, rearranged from 17th December, was a much better affair. Away to La Siesta’s Pioneers, they managed a creditable 10 points, 81:73, lifting them to 2nd in the table, with Joyce Reeeves, Bill Reeves & Lee Sinclair leading the way - 19:14.

night. Fair play to the Queens they held their own and there were a couple of close calls when, if the arrow had gone in, their highnesses would have been celebrating. With quite a few ton´s several 140´s and a 17 darter from Aroldas, the away team played well. Whilst the Queens felt a little deflated, they enjoyed the very early finish and went home for some extra beauty sleep!

Chemies Chicks v Hub Hellraisers Not only was it the last home match before Xmas but it was also the local ladies derby and both teams were up for a good night. First treble went to the Chicks with Kerry on D4.

The second saw Lili hit 81, Lesley 93, Henni 83, 81 and Lili finish with a D9. The Hellraisers decided they weren't going to put up with this and Alison 74, Jan and Sharon took on Michelle, Susan 97, 89, 72, and Winnie 101 with Jan getting the D16. On to the doubles and the champions Jan and Lesley took on Lili and Lara 72, Jan finished in style for the Hellraisers on D4 and it was game on. Cheryl and Sue took on Henni 76 and Susan 80 and Cheryl finished D11, things were definitely looking up for the home team. On the last double Natalie stepped up to the oche for the first time this season together with Val against Val and Andrea. Despite some spectacular throws from Nat 69, 84, and Val with a 75 (and all her darts went in the board!) the Chicks' Val sealed it with D3 throwing in a 71 along the way. Half time and everyone was ready for the famous Hellraisers' Xmas buffet and bubbly. The singles started with Lesley finding her mojo against Kerry scoring 105 and finishing and D1.

Sexy Santa Cheryl spread more cheer finishing on D3 against Lili.

Hellraisers were winning 5:3!! Joy took on Michelle who finished for the chicks on D3 then Ali 80 and Henni 79 battled through invoking the D1 rule to see Henni take it making it evens with 2 games to go. Sue took on Winnie with a 121 but she came right back with a 108 then finished on a D2. It was all on the last leg and Jan faced Susan. Jan hit a 74 and 79 but Susan finished in style on D19 to take the match. A thoroughly good and entertaining night had by all and well-deserved

Hub Hellraisers in festive mood MOM went to Jan for the Hellraisers and Susan for the Chicks.

Las Rosas Bullies v Hub Hyenas A noisy night of high scoring was had as the YELLOW HUB MACHINE arrived for a singing and darting evening. There were a total of 17 scores of a hundred or more, although the score of 10¬2 to the Hub appears like a walkover this was definitely not the case.

Many of the legs were down to who got their winning double first.

Unfortunately for Rosas that was the Hub. Much banter went on during the games and along with the Hub Choir this made a very enjoyable evening. Man of the match went to Paul Durrant for the Hub who threw well all night and for Las Rosas young upcoming Star Sam Seymour who took that honour.

Fire Station Black Watch v Pint Depot Jesters Fire Station Black Watch went into a 2-1 lead after the trebles.

Barry for the home team finishing off 2 of the games with smart doubles and a 122 score. The Jesters hit back with MOTM Matt hitting a 120 and a D2 to narrow the gap.

The Jesters then won 2 out of the 3 pairs games with visitors, Alan and Matt once again displaying clinical finishing to level the match at 3-3 going into the break. Kevin, for Fire Station Black Watch took out the best 3 dart finish of the night with a tidy 80.

The singles saw MOTM Barry for the home team in sparkling form with a 140, 100 x 2 before taking out his double at the first attempt.

Not to be outdone, Matt for the Jesters scored two 140’s back to back to take a storming game against Les. As the match went into the final stages Sandra performed heroics to clinch victory for Fire Station Black Watch by winning the penultimate game against Andy after the no bust rule on double 1 was invoked.

San Miguel Golf Society, Lo Romero An early night in bed on Tuesday, or a short night’s sleep, as a 08.30 shotgun start meant a prompt arrival for all for the latest SMGS gathering.

The sun had hardly risen as 41 members and their 3 guests took off on a course very much favoured by the SMGS membership.

As always, it was in terrific condition, with the greens up to their excellent standard and quite slick compared to other courses played recently.

The weather, as it has been since the heavy rains some 10 days previously, was beautifully bright and warm after the initial cold start. In fact so nice was it by mid-round that one member decided to go for a short and galvanising swim somewhere around the 9th green, although exactly where was not disclosed by either him or his playing partners.

It did however act as an excuse to drive up the 10th fairway and ignore the very clear request to stay off it and stick to the buggy path. Presumably this was in an attempt to catch the sun and dry off, avoiding the shade of the requested route, as well as keep up with the group in front.

As per usual at this course, scoring was generally quite good without anybody being able to dominate it. Only Keith Wraithmell managed to beat his handicap, with 3 other members matching theirs.

Results, by Category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Mick Seymour (28), 4th Mike Jordan (30), 3rd Alan Hill (33), 2nd Brian Butler (36) and 1st Keith Wraithmell with 37 points and the day’s best score.

Silver Category: 5th Adrian Roberts (29), 4th Phil de Lacy (32), 3rd Kyrre Skarsmoen (33 on CB), 2nd Roger Webb (33 on CB) and first Bjorn Pettersson with 36 points.

Gold Category: 5th Barry Roehrig (31), 4th Hugh Reilly (33), 3rd Robin Eastman (34 on

Given the perfect conditions, the scoring was not particularly high apart from John Burke who posted an inward twenty-two Stableford points to finish with a handicap busting thirty seven, steering his team to a win by six clear points.

The Plaza Golf Society Las Ramblas Turkey Trot What started out as a very cold crisp December morning soon turned out to be a Hot Texas Scramble for 48 hardy players at Las Ramblas, a course our members think is ideally suited to this format! As usual the course was in great condition albeit very challenging.

12 teams contested the event which included 4 nearest the pins sponsored by The Ale House and were won by Nick Lee, Anthony Flood, Jimmy Gray and Theo Boelhouwer for their respective teams.

The main event was a close run competition with Team Ron coming third with a net 62.11 score second was Team Darren with a net 61.9 and top of the pile was Team Callum playing with Russell Bailey, Steve Hitcham and Norman Killops scoring a brilliant nett 59.05.........well done to all the teams who celebrated the event in good style back at The Ale House - thanks to Carl and his staff for looking after us.

The Society and Members on the day supported the Gandia Preventoria Children’s Home raising 320 euros to a very worthy cause organised by Liz Holtham.

Committee Cup, and the last round of our Eclectic Cup event on Thursday 29th November 2018. The turnout was good and after the AGM we were all looking forward to the event.

The course was in poor condition as the damage caused by the recent heavy rains had still not been repaired. The overall scoring was very high, but we decided not to play out of the bunkers as they were still in a bad way.

‘Rules of Golf and Golfing Etiquette’ Golfers that have played the golf for any length of time will understand that golf is controlled and governed by a complex set of golf rules set by the Royal and Ancient based at St Andrews.

Regular readars of this column will also be aware from a recent article of mine that some of the basic rules we face in every round of golf such as speed of play,dropping procedures and hazards are changing as from 1st January 2019 and ALL golfers need to be aware of these changes to avoid penalty shots due not having knowledge of these rule changes.

Here on the Costa Blanca we have seen an influx of golfers with very high or non existant handicaps who appear to have no nowledge of either the rules of golf or etiquette and golf courses have a role to play here because all courses specify a maximum handicap limit but NONE actually apply them.

Putting the rules of golf aside for a moment,etiquette is simply a few acts of courtsesy towards fellow players and the golf course and can be summarised as: a) Be courteous to all fellow players b) Keep up with the group in front and not just keep in fron of the group behind. c) Stand to one side and allow faster players to pass. d) Repair pitch marks on the greens (and one for a friend) e) Replace divots on fairways (but not tees) f) Rake your footprints in all bunkers (and those of a friend) g) Don't walk on the line of a fellow golfers putt. h) Stand still and be quiet will fellow golfers play I) Park buggies in a position to speed play and not interfere with fellow players If all golfers could follow these simple acts of courtsesy we would all

La Marina Golf Society We arrived at the magnificent Las Colinas course to play for the final time under the captaincy of Elspeth Craig . A highly successful year in which she has shown the many attributes of captaincy, ruling with a firm hand when necessary, but proving herself a genial captain.

We look forward to Bill Stobo taking over the role in 2019 and wish him much success.

In a low scoring Silver group the winner was Iain Lyall with 30 points, but in the Gold group the scoring was considerably higher with the winner Lynn Leigh with an excellent 40 points.

Elspeth signed off on her year with two NTP'S ,the other 2 going to Alan Craig and serial winner on the day Iain Lyall, who also took a share of the2's pot with Roy Harris.

Basement battle sees Torry scrape narrow win

T

his battle of the basement clash inside La Solana Stadium, pitched rock bottom Villena (6 points) against next to bottom Torry (10 points) in a game that neither club could afford to lose.

But despite floundering at the foot of the table Villena have shown that they are capable of putting together occasional performances, with two wins in recent weeks, one of them a thrashing of highly placed Uni Alicante.

The visitors were missing the suspended defensive pairing of Juanmi and Inaki, victims of needless straight red cards during last week’s 3-1 defeat against Independent Alicante but it is not the defence that needs to be strengthened with only the hustle and

bustle of Omar capable of providing any sort of forward threat.

But true to his word, managing director David has been instrumental in bringing in yet another Argentinian player to the club, this time 27 year old Julian Gil, a centre forward from Qala Saints in the second tier of the Maltese football league, who arrives at the club with an impressive pedigree.

Playing with clubs in Argentina and Denmark, he has notched up goals a plenty.

And there has been midweek action off the field, Quironsalud have recently become the club’s main shirt sponsor, which will surely benefit both parties long term.

In the game itself a terrible pitch contributed to a scrappy goal less opening half hour,

CD Torrevieja ...........................1 where players from both sides were found slipping all over the place, whilst struggling to produce a decent shot on target.

The first period was disappointing for the small number of fans that had made the journey but when Omar bundled his way past Dario and Davito on 67 minutes to stab ball home all that was forgotten as was the strikers disappointing form of late.

With Omar taking a knock in the process it was time for him to make way for Julian who then provided problems of his own for the Villena defence.

It was not Torry’s best display of the season but it was probably one of the most important, lifting them above Benidorm into 16th place in the Preferente table.

Next Sunday a local derby match for Torry as they entertain mid table Thader Rojales.

After a fraught season - in which coach Carlos Perez was given the sack last month new hope was installed with the appointment of Ruben Saez Juarez.

Ruben opened his account with a shock 1-0 win against third placed Santa Pola CF in late November -lifting CD Montesinos out of the relegation zone.

Monte, in the lower echelons of the table, went into the game against ninth placed CF Rafal on the back of a hearty performance against league leaders Racing San Miguel,

Patri returned to the Monte lineup, named as a substitute, after serving a two match ban, with keeper Michael taking the green jersey from Carlos. Striker Liam was ruled out with injury.

Montesinos took the lead on 37 minutes through substitute German to lead 1-0 at the interval.

Striker Vazquinho, who posed with his daughter in the pre match photo shoot, gave Monte a 2-0 lead when slotting home a spot kick on 80 minutes, running to coach Ruben in celebration.

Carp R Us Winter Series Round Two of the Carp-R-Us winter Series was fished on the Eden stretch of the Rio Segura.

Although conditions were perfect, with temperatures reaching the low twenties, the fishing was very hard.

First was Jackie Breslin with 2.80 kg, two carp caught using feeder and maggot tactics. Second was Steve Fell with 1.20 kg, a mix bag of mullet, bleak and a small carp caught on a variety of methods.

Third was Tom Marshall with 0.85 kg, a single carp caught on the feeder and fourth was Alan Smith with 0.70 kg.
