Centenary commemorations held across the Costa Blanca

n Sunday, a Service of Remembrance was held at the Cenotaph on Whitehall, London to commemorate the

contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women involved in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

This year, with Remembrance Sunday falling on the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the event held a special significance, no more

so than here in Spain where services were held across the entire length of the Costa Blanca.

The Hondón Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion met on a very wet and windy evening in October, and even that didn’t dampen the spirits of the members and guests who came along.

Following the general meeting we were entertained by a remarkable Chocolate Lab dog - Voltio. Danny de Castillo, the acclaimed Assistance Dog Trainer, asked Voltio to demonstrate an amazing range of obedience and skills including, switching on lights, opening drawers and taking items out, as well as opening the fridge door (and removing items) and helping his master undress.

problems and Legion members were “spell bound” by the different ways Voltio was able to help. At the end of the evening Voltio was presented with a reflective poppy for his collar – which he wore with Pride!.

The Branch are organising a range different activities for the coming year and anyone wishing to come along, will be made most welcome.

Generalitat to simulate major earthquake Next Wednesday, 14 November, the Valencian Agency for Security and Response to Emergencies (AVSRE), will hold the # GranSimulacre2018, a simulation exercise that will recreate a major earthquake in Torrevieja where the emergency services will put into practice the protocols necessary to deal with demolished buildings and a rescue operation for people trapped and buried under the rubble.

The simulation will have the intensity needed to collapse buildings, cause damage in a Torrevieja neighborhood and damage the basic supply of utilities: water, electricity and gas.

Also, mobile telephony will be affected by an overload in the network.

This is the third year in a row that AVSRE will have held a simulation with the involvement of a large number of personnel from different emergency agencies, with the aim of involving as many people as possible in the simulation culture. In addition, the # GranSimulacre2018 will learn from the lessons of five years ago, when similar training was last held in Torrevieja, in order to implement the Special Plan in the Valencian Community In 2016, a simulation of a rail accident was carried out by FGVMetrovalencia, with injuries of varying degrees, while in 2017, an accident involving multiple victims of a commercial flight was recreated at Alicante-Elche airport.

The director of the Agency for Security and Response to Emergencies, José María Ángel, stressed the importance of carrying out these drills "because without them society cannot practise the procedures, which local citizens should also be aware of and, where

possible, educated in. ON this occasion the drill will involve a major earthquake.

There will be a total of 775 people taking part in the simulation, 300 more than last year, which represents a major effort by the AVSRE to coordinate all of the 25 agencies involved, representing municipalities, fire brigades, forest firefighters, security forces , civil protection volunteers, students of Emergencies, different councils, Red Cross and the Military Emergency Unit.

The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, said that "the fact that we living in a seismic zone does not have to be seen as something negative, but it is important that we are always prepared for situations of this type".

This simulation will also see the involvement of six secondary schools and 13 elementary and junior high schools of Torrevieja, which will carry out, simultaneously, simulations involving school self-protection. A total of 4,840 children and 452 teachers will be involved from Secondary institutions while 7,061 children and 388 teachers will take part from Infant and Primary schools.

Consell will not authorise Gypsum mine The Minister of Sustainable Economy, Rafael Climent, has now confirmed that the project to develop a gypsum mine in San Miguel on protected land will never be authorised.

The counsellor met in Valencia with the neighbourhood association that did so much to mobilise the people of the municipality. Later in the day he also met with members of the San Miguel de Salinas council. The meetings were arranged by the local secretary of Podemos in Orihuela, David Vegara.

Torrevieja mayor meets British Residents The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, visited the southern part of the city on Wednesday morning, where he met with a large representation of British residents.

The operations manager of Grupo Avanza in Torrevieja, Luis González, was with councillor Javier Manzanares last week, at the unveiling of two new buses that will complement the Torrevieja bus service.

Each bus will carry 49 passengers as well as providing a double ramp that will allow access for people with reduced mobility. The two new vehicles will also have a real-time locator via GPS, which will provide information about the location of the bus as it travels along its route.

There will also be internal LED lighting, WIFI and USB connections. The investment in the two new vehicles exceeds 500,000 euros and both went into local service last Monday.

Manzanares said that this is "only part of a package of short term improvements that will further improve the urban transport of the city."

He agreed to open both gates into the Rocajuna Park, which have previously remained closed and in the same area, Altos del Rey, he said that the park will be cleaned. He also promised to prune and maintain the eucalyptus trees in Las Barcas.

Throughout the morning the mayor listened to the residents’ concerns which he said would be noted and taken into account by council planners.

No Councillor since 2015 “In the twenty years leading up to the last municipal elections, held in 2015, the Partido Popular (PP) had always ruled Orihuela, and in so doing they had provided a dedicated Councillor for Orihuela Costa and a budget, until, that is, 2011.

The Coalition Government, led by Los Verdes, retained a Councillor for the Coast and a budget from 2011 to 2015.

When the PP regained their leadership in 2015 they too were required to form a coalition government, this time with the Ciudadanos political party, which had won 3 seats.

The first thing that the new mayor then did was to abolish the Councillor for the Coast and withdraw the budget.

Since then it has been their policy to systematically degrade and neglect Orihuela Costa, for reasons known only to them.

A year later the government appointed 2 coordinators to work from the Administration Office (Town Hall) in Orihuela Costa.

As a result no actual decisions can be made at this office, all are made in Orihuela city Town Hall almost 40 kilometres distant, by the ruling Government Councillors, for approx 30,000 registered on the Padron, of 101 nationalities.

In fact, according to the utility companies, approx.

87,000 people actually live in Orihuela Costa.

Thus 50,000 people are still not registered on the Padron, as a consequence of which there is a loss of at least one million euros to the Orihuela government for the Orihuela Costa public services.

This means that Orihuela Costa will never get a second Medical Centre, an Auditorium, a full time Library, Casa Cultura, Bus station or a Cemetary, let alone the Emergency Services Centre with a 24 hour Ambulance service, Police station and

Bomberos / Fire station UNTIL more Orihuela Costa residents register to vote and then remove the parties that continue to degrade the coast.

During 2016 the authorities decided to divide Orihuela CLARO leader Roman Costa into 2 disJimenez tricts in order to weaken us.

Their aim, to divide and conquer the residents of Orihuela Costa.

The only way that the local population can challenge the ruling government is to ensure that they are registered on the Padron, and then, within 90 days, registered as a permanent resident. They will then be able to exercise their right to vote in the May 2019 local elections.

C.L.A.R.O is the only political party to represent the Orihuela Costa. We genuinely believe that OUR TIME IS NOW. In the 2015 municipal elections the party was less than 40 votes short of winning a Council seat.

Whilst they admit that total independence for the Orihuela Costa is still some way down the road C.L.A.R.O have now set their sights on Financial Independence for the coast, an achievement that they say is not beyond the realms of possibility!

£846 to change a lightbulb A blown headlight bulb can cost up to £846 to replace on some of Britain’s best-selling small cars, new research reveals.

A study into 13 popular models on sale today by What Car? found headlight repair bills vary by several hundred pounds depending on whether the models have halogen or HID or LED bulbs. Of the vehicles examined, four came with High Intensity Discharge (HID) bulbs on some or all trim levels and three had LED bulbs.

HID and LED bulbs are far brighter than halogen lights and can last up to 10 times as long, but replacements can cost close to £1,000. The complexity of HID and LED bulbs is partly to blame for the higher costs but in many instances manufacturers have also switched to sealed headlight designs, which cannot be opened up like a normal unit to allow for bulb replacement. As a result, customers have to buy a complete headlight unit to fix a blown bulb.

The cost of replacing a traditional halogen bulb on a Volkswagen Polo costs owners just £18.

However, buyers who choose the high-spec GTI model face a £846 repair bill for the car’s LED sealed headlight unit.

Similarly, Suzuki Swift owners with SZ3 or SZT trim levels only have to pay £4 to replace a blown bulb, while those with a high-spec Swift SZ5 will have to pay £684 for a replacement HID unit.

Even if the headlight unit isn’t sealed, HID bulbs are still far more expensive to replace than normal halogen items. The HID bulb for a Vauxhall Corsa Elite costs £317, while a halogen bulb for a lower spec version is just £17. Audi A1 SE trim owners will pay £18 for a new halogen bulb, but those with S-Line Nav models have to pay £211 for a new HID bulb and control unit.

Claire Evans, What Car? consumer editor, said: “The longevity of HID bulbs makes them a viable option on a new car. However, if you are buying a used car as a second household vehicle or as a first car for a son or daughter, you – and they – could be landed with a massive repair bill for a blown bulb that could even render the car a write-off due to it being uneconomical to repair.”

Greg Whitaker, editor of What Car?’s sister title Car and Accessory Trader expects replacement costs of headlight units will fall in the future as the aftermarket sector catches up to the technology: “It’s happened in the past with a number of car parts. The floating speedometer needle in the Mercedes C-Class was prone to breaking and AC Tronics created a fix for this. And the ECU in the Vauxhall Meriva had some fragile components that frequently broke, so a fix for this was also created.”

The first local event took place on Friday where children, staff and parents, from the Phoenix International School in San Miguel de Salinas, joined with members of The Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion to pay their respects to the fallen.

how pleased he was to have such a close relationship with the RBL and how much he, and the people of Spain, shared with their thoughts and sentiments at this time. Pastor Keith Brown responded by thanking the people of Pilar de la Horadada and Orihuela for the wonderful support they have provided in the holding this event.

The service was concluded with the National Anthems of Spain and the United Kingdom after which the ceremony moved out to the brand new Garden of Remembrance, completely refurbished by the Ayuntamiento of Pilar de la Horadada, where dignitaries and guests laid their wreathes in remembrance after which branch and members of the public added their own poppy crosses in memory of family members and lost friends.

Accompanied by The RBL Band the children sang a selection of hymns and songs from the period, after which they read poems written by and dedicated to First World War veterans, as they took part in an outdoor service led by the RBL Chaplain of Spain North, Pastor Keith Brown.

Flanked by a large number of the general public the Pipes and Drums then led over a hundred and fifty members of the congregation from the church to the Mil Palmeras Olympia Restaurant where members and guests enjoyed a delightful buffet lunch.

On Saturday the commemoration moved to Torrevieja where the local RBL Branch held ceremony in a packed La Siesta Church, into which the RBL standards, as well as those of RAFA, RNA and RMA, were escorted by the splendid Torrevieja Pipes and Drums.

As they formed up in front of the altar the service got underway with a prayer from Father Richard Seabrook, officiating chaplain, followed by the RBL Exhortation and then, most significantly of all, the Last Post played by Ian Gibson of the JB Brass Band.

The music was provided by the Royal British Band in Spain led by David Last and the Crescendo International choir.

In his sermon, Fr Richard spoke of his connection to WW1 through his grandfather who served in the trenches in France before moving to Palestine as he proudly held aloft his campaign medals and photographs The lessons were read in English and Spanish by branch President Gill Burden and Debbie Winston after which a poem to the fallen was read by Carol Stockwell. Orihuela Costa and District Branch held its annual service led by Pastor Keith Brown, with the event being relayed both on a large screen and by sound to a congregation of over 600 people.

Guests included the British Vice Consul Sara Munsterhjelm and the Chairman of the RBL Spain District North, Don Cubbon. They were joined by the mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, Ignacio Ramos, and five of his councillors along with Orihuela councillors Sofia Alvarez and Luisa Boné.

Gerald Turner of Blevins Franks, who sponsored the Order of Service, represented the business community, along with Anne Martinez Hoth, of Quiron Salud Hospital.

The National Service of Remembrance was originally conceived as a commemoration of the war dead of the First World War but after the Second World War the scope of the ceremony was extended to focus on the nation’s dead of both World Wars, and in 1980 it was widened once again to extend the remembrance to all who have suffered and died in conflict in the service of their country and all those who mourn.

But of course Remembrance is not just about those who fought in the last two World Wars, it is also held in respect of those involved in the many other conflicts worldwide and those who are still fighting for peace and freedom even now.

It is also about all of us learning from the past and resolving to make the world a better place in which to live, and with so many more children becoming involved in the event here on the Costa Blanca we are now rather more assured that the future of remembrance is in increasingly safe hands.

Pastor Keith Brown was assisted by lay preacher Stephen Treseder while lessons and readings were delivered by Don Ignacia and Dña Sofia, along with Sara Munsterhjelm, Gerald Turner, Branch Vice chairman Walter Shatford and Councillor Pilar Samper.

There was also a moving performance of ‘Bring him home’ faultlessly sung by RBL supporter Stevie Spit. The RBL Band in Spain again provided the musical accompaniment to the hymns led by their MD David Last.

Prior to the service, the RBL standards, as well as those of RAFA, RNA and RMA, were led to the church by the splendid Torrevieja Pipes and Drums.

Torrevieja councillor to testify in terrace controversy orrevieja’s Court of Instruction Number 3 has called on Councillor Javier Manzanares (PSOE) to testify in relation to an investigation opened for alleged irregularities regarding the occupation of a public road with terraces in Torrevieja. The judicial appointment, which the mayor must attend, is scheduled for 29 November.

The proceedings have been opened following a complaint against the City Council filed by a private individual residing on the La Mata beachfront next to a terrace that that allegedly violates the conditions to operate on a public road.

The judicial action highlights the municipal inactivity and points out that the breach of the regulations of this well-known ice cream parlour goes back to 2014. However Manzanares, who will be running for mayor in the next municipal election, maintains that as soon as he was alerted of the irregularities, which date back to the days of the PP, he quickly put in measures to have them corrected.

Three men being sought for alleged rape in San Javier The Civil Guard and the Local Police have begun an investigation to try to locate three men for an alleged attempt to rape a woman in a street in San Javier. According to sources, the attack took place around one o'clock on Saturday morning in Calle Maestre.

Local police agents found the woman, wandering up the middle of the road in a state of shock. She explained that she had been having drinks with some friends in a nearby bar and that, on leaving the bar and

walking home, she had been assaulted by three men who had touched her and tried, to strip her naked.

The agents searched the area for the suspects or a witness, but without success. They also went into the bar but the management was unable to help.

The victim said that she didn’t know any of her attackers and neither was she able to provide a description.

The three alleged aggressors are still being sought.

Orihuela and Torrevieja represented at London Fair Orihuela was represented at the World Travel Fair in London, which took place from 5-7 November, 5 to 7, where the councillor for tourism Sofía Álvarez, met with professionals from the sector, tour operators and managers of hotel chains, "in order to continue the positioning of Orihuela as a tourist destination.”

This year, the Community held a free draw for people who passed through the Turisme Comunitat Valenciana stand, the prize being a free trip during Orihuela Holy Week next April.

However the councillor said that most of her enquiries related to the well tried and tested aspects of tourism, sun, sea and golf.

Also at the fair was Torrevieja, where tourism councillor Fanny Serrano said that "the fair is one of the main international events of the industry along with Fitur in Madrid and the ITB which is held in Berlin, so the city of Torrevieja cannot be left behind in terms of tourism promotion".

Red, White or Blue?

must first confess to having a very simplistic knowledge of wine. I know what I like and what I don’t like. I will not spend a lot of time and money on fancy labels, nor will I indulge in that ridiculous time-wasting drama of ‘someone who knows wine’ - tasting it before it is poured knowingly by the waiter.

If the wine is ‘off’, I would send it back. As an alternative, just sniff the cork; it really is that simple, and saves an awful lot of time.

What colour of wine do you prefer? I like white wine during a sunny lunchtime snack and maybe a chilled red during a warm evening. I tend to opt for a Canarian or Spanish wine, mainly out of loyalty to my adopted country, but I guess that my favourites are the island wines, and particularly those from Lanzarote. Now what about a blue wine?

I had the pleasure of trying a blue wine recently. I was initially a little doubtful, but since blue is my favourite colour and it was glowing temptingly in the sunshine, I didn’t hesitate. After the first tentative sip, I knew that I was hooked.

Not only did the deep, rich blue colour look amazing, but it suited my palette perfectly. Yes, it was on the sweet side, but it was the kind of sweetness that fits so well on a hot sunny day by the swimming pool or in a bar overlooking the sea.

To many ‘wine connoisseurs’, the very idea of a blue wine is truly a horrific concept, yet it is already made in several Spanish wineries. I am told that blue wine is a mix of mainly white and a little red wine, as well as freshly crushed grape juice.

The blue colour is based upon using two pigments, anthocyanin, which is found in the skin of red grapes, and indigo carmine. It is best described as a blend of technology and the best that nature can provide.

I am also told that blue wine has received mixed reviews, including from the Paris ‘Ritz’, who described it as “surprising”. Whether that is ‘surprisingly good’ or ‘surprisingly bad’, I have yet to find out, whilst the UK’s Telegraph referred to it as “a gimmick”, which probably means it is very nice, but they don’t want anyone else to know about it.

Sadly, in Europe the new blue wine has to be labelled as an “alcoholic drink”, since the authorities have decreed that it cannot be a wine, because it is blue, which leaves me very confused about the status of rosé wine.

Enterprising Spanish wineries are now producing a wide range of alternatives to the usual red and white wines. RBL Band welcomes International trombonist

Helen’s Story S Samaritans in Spain

am Arthur is the most recent addition to the Royal British Legion Band in Spain.

I felt calmer, more at ease, and ready to make my own decisions after confiding in the Samaritans.

Helen used Samaritans’ text service to help her through problems she was having with her partner.

Nowhere else to turn “I have contacted Samaritans by text a number of times. It was mainly around the time I was having problems with my (now ex) partner.

"I needed someone to talk to, in confidence, without anyone knowing. I was feeling really low, upset, angry and worried about my relationship, and didn’t know where else to turn.

“I heard about the texting service through a friend. As I have a hearing impairment, phone calls can be very difficult for me and I am more at ease when texting people, so it was a great option for me.

“Samaritans helped me by listening (well reading!) to what I said and responding by asking questions and offering support.

“My experience of using the text service was good, even though there were times when I had to wait a while for a response.

"I felt calmer, more at ease, and ready to make my own decisions after confiding in them.

"I think my life would be quite different if I hadn’t sought help from Samaritans.

“I still experience problems with depression and anxiety, but I am much better than I was when I first contacted Samaritans.

“The Samaritans’ text service is fantastic, particularly for people like me who have problems with anxiety as you don’t have to speak. I have recommended it to a few of my friends.

A professional Bass Trombone player who has recently made the move to Spain, Sam initially showed little interest in music as a youngster until around the age of 8, when he began by learning the Saxophone. After years of playing he decided to change to the Bass Trombone at aged 16.

Although a late starter to the instrument it all seemed very natural and he spent years playing in youth ensembles in Artforms Leeds, including the Symphony Orchestra, the Wind Orchestra, the Big Band and the Brass Band.

The next big step for Sam was when he gained an unconditional place to study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and obtained a BMus (Hons) Degree, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Orchestral Studies.

During his time at the conservatoire Sam played with various ensembles and whilst still studying he gained work with the professional Symphony orchestras in the area, including the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Hallé Orchestra,

Orchestra of Opera North and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, finishing up working with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra as well as others in and around the UK and abroad.

On the 24th of November Sam will be performing a solo concerto by American composer Chris Brubeck, for the weekend of the patron Saint: Santa Cecilia with the Union Musical San Fulgencio. A huge privilege for an English performer to be invited by a Spanish band to do this. The concert will take place in the Teatro Cardenal Belluga in San Fulgencio.

Sam is keen to continue a musical career over here in Spain and has already been added to the deputy lists for many of the professional Symphony Orchestras throughout Spain. He is readily available for concerts, recitals, studio work and teaching privately or group coaching.

Fire Station Black Watch v The Ale House Fire Station Black Watch got off to a flying start against the visitors from The Ale House.

The combination of Kev, John, Barry and home Captain Les, Black Watch won two out of the three triples between them. Jim G, Karl O and André pulled one back for the visitors.

More of the same continued in the pairs with Black Watch winning two out the three games helped by Barry scoring his customary 140, and home MOTM Gena and Kev. Karl M and Ian salvaged a game for The Ale House.

So, at half time with the Fire Station team leading 4-2 the visitors looked a little worried.

However, things definitely changed after the break, as The Ale House recovered their composure and took the first three singles thanks to Captain Karl M, the prodigy that is Jordan and visitors MOTM Alan.

The marathon game between Paul and Jim U dragged on as Paul ended up in the madhouse while Jim U had several throws at D3 before clinching the game to the visitor´s relief.

John and Les won their 2 singles for the home team to restore the balance.

A real game of two halves saw honours shared at the end of a nail biting but enjoyable session at 6-6.

Angels Arrows v Chemies Loungers A terrific game against a great bunch of lads, with Dave Wright 140 finish and Jim MacKay 3 x 100. Playing great darts James MacKay (Chemies Loungers) and Ron Chadwick (Angels Arrows) taking Man of The Match.

Costa Blanca Petanca League by Sue Ward What a wonderful beginning this brand new Petanca league has had. Born out of controversy, but like a phoenix it has risen from the flames with a future that will only go from strength to strength.

The league consists of 8 teams - 5 from Domino Bar in Los Altos, 2 from Amigo Belgas in Torrevieja and 1 from Pumas at Los Altos.

The playing day will be on a Monday. It started with all teams playing the 1st part of a 3 part cup tournament up at Los Altos on 22nd October 2018.

The atmosphere was so friendly yet competitive mixed with the excitement that is felt of a new project actually happens. The 2nd part will be played in December and the final part in March, when the winners are known. It is to be known as The Mumbai Blue Cup.

The league has attracted some good sponsorship, One-Way Services in Cuidad Quesada, Mumbai Blue Restaurant in La Florida and Viajes Dreamworld in Torrevieja. Thank you all for your very generous support.

The league started properly on Monday 29th October. The playing order is different to the other local leagues in as much as 9 games are played, so there will always be a winning team.

2 x triples & 1 double, 2 x triples & 1 double, 3 x doubles, of which 1 must be a ladies.

On the second double the home team must change both players.

This formula proved to be a great hit with the teams playing in their first match, on a very chilly day!!

Country Bowls Club by Jo Richardson The Flamingos travelled to Greenland’s on Monday. Our old sister club is blessed with some fine bowlers and so each rink was keenly contested.By early afternoon, however, the game had taken on a different look and the Flamingos went on to record another fine away win.

Results are; Sylvia Rennie, Dave Smith and Jim Rennie 11 – 21, Pat Ray, Peter Robins and Brian Ray 30 – 21, Ben Noke, Pat Emmet and Ray Emmet 20 – 13, Dennis Wade, Les Turner and Phil Warrington 20 – 21, John Jukes, Derek Jiggins and Geoff Paylor 23 – 28 Friday saw the Gecko’s arriving at a green that had experienced a wild hailstorm through the night and Graham, the owner, working the carpet brush to clear the sitting water and make the green playable.

After a couple of hours of hard work the game was back on.

San Miguel were tough opposition coming to Country Bowls from a great win against the top of the league team Mazarron Miners. The Gecko’s played hard and fought in difficult high winds

resulting in a great win. The winners were Pat Patton, Den Wade and Brian Patton.

Our second game on Friday were the Cubs away to Vista Bella Conquistadors on a very windy afternoon. Whilst the bowls ran straight on one hand and swung far on the other, it took both teams all their skills and talent just to play to the jack. A closer game could not have been predicted with Country Bowls taking the shot difference of 6 and winning on 3 rinks. Overall score 8 – 4 to the Cubs.

In the Voyager Division both the Sputniks and the Pioneers visited El Rancho and both had good results.The Sputniks winning by 82 shots to 64 picking up 10 points against the Palaminos whilst the Pioneers won by 87 shots to 78 against the Raiders.

For the Sputniks best winning rinks came from Hilary Clarke, Rod Edgerton and Alan Ralph and from Joe Kocsis, Molly Russell and Willie McEvoy both winning their matches by 5 shots whilst Dot Kocsis,Jim Eastwood and Lee Plummer won by 4 shots.

For the Pioneers Pat Moore with Bill & Sue Jordan won by 19 shots and Joe Elkin,Derek Smith and Rab Logan won by 13 shots.

In the Enterprise Division the Apollos entertained Quesada Pearls and won by 105 shots to 60 picking up 10 points.Star performance came from the rink of Derek Biggs,Jenny Bowman and Irene Mangan winning 23 shots to 8.

Our Winter League team travelled to Bonalba and won on 2 of the 5 rinks picking up 4 points. A further rink was close which would have enabled a draw with their opponents.

In the Southern League A Division the Blues visited San Luis Lions and picked up 2 points the overall match shots being 64-111 winning on the rink of Joy & Brian Gardiner with Jean Cooper by 18 - 14.

In the B Division the Golds played their re-arranged home game against El Rancho Broncos and won by 116 shots to 69 picking up 10 points with biggest winning rink coming from Jo Elkin,Tony Dalton and Vic Mahomet winning 37-13.

They were closely followed by Derek Smith, Val Dalton and Rab Logan winning by 16 shots and Doug Beattie, Norman Adcroft and Fay Beattie winning by 15 shots.

The Golds then on Friday travelled to San Luis Leopards and had an excellent 118-62 shots victory.the team picked up 11 points to the Leopards 1. Well played to all of the team keeping up their winning run.

San Miguel Bowls Club by Gail Willshire The Dalmatians were home to Greenland’s Maples this week and managed an 8 points to 4 victory, 99 shots to 82.

The highest winning rink belonged to Bob Nesbitt, Dave Champion & Barbara Scotthern (remember mentioning them last week too!)

25:8. The Pointers took over in the afternoon beating the San Luis Romulans 8:4 with 101 shots to 64.

The 2 losing rinks lost by the smallest of margins but the glory went to Bob Hanton, Ann Allen & Dave Greenland winning 27:8. The Beagles were away at San Luis facing the Trekkers but were able to win on just 1 rink with overall shots 90:92 – how close was that!

Well done to Dave Johnson, Val Hignett & Mary Dyer winning 27:17.

As the rain increased, the Alsatians turned up to face the Klingons and faired no better, 72 shots to 109. Well done to Anita Brown, Ron Nairey & Eddie Cowan (another deja-vu moment) for getting the 2 points, 20:10.

The Winter League team was at home to Greenlands this week, taking the match 8 points to 4, 87:82. The highest winners were Don Whitney, Val Collier, Chris Collier & Stuart Denholm 23:6, helping to get the team to 2nd place.

On Friday, the Boxers travelled to Country Bowls to take on the Geckos and came away with 4 points, 88 shots to 95. The highest winners, here we go again! Bob Nesbitt and Barbara Scotthern, this time teamed up with Ann Young.

However, the win of the week went to the Bulldogs who welcomed the Emerald Isle Claymores to SMBC and finished with 10 points, 90 shots to 65. The losing rink only lost by 2, but the gold star, as last week, belonged to Sandy Hannan, Tom Dalgleish & Dave Greenland, 25 points to 9.

In the C Division the Silvers played the Rangers at a very windy El Rancho and lost by 96 shots to 51.

A reminder that the Wasps sessions take place Wednesdays 1:30 for 2:00 - €5 for an afternoon’s bowling with shoes and woods available to borrow. Due to the popularity of the Wasps, first time bowlers are now asked to attend an initial coaching session on Tuesday afternoons, starting at 1:45.

Well done to Joe Kocsis, Ken Stringfellow and John Clarke who managed to win on their rink by 20 shots to 13 picking up 2 points for the Silvers.

La Marina Bowls Club by Barry Latham Off we go again another exciting week. Not so good to start with though as the Explorers lost 9 – 3 at home to the Vistabella Albatrosses.

Mike Stone and Co carrying on their winning ways 20 – 16. So well done Mike, Carol Smith and Steve Douglas. Peter Parsons, Don Fowkes and Barbara Forshaw had admirable draw at 20 – 20.

Then away went the Pathfinders to play Vistabella Eagles and came away 12 – 0 winners much to the delight of Captain Jean Perchard and Hubby Terry who won 18 – 11 with help from Margaret Sadler.

Not to be out done Barry Sadler, Dave McGaw and Desna Lowe won 26 – 14. Dave Hadaway, Bernie Carr and Jean Tregoing won 18 – 12 while John Withers, Mike Lowe and Reg Jackson managed one less 17 – 12. Garth Slater, Paul Tregoing and Trevor Hancock had a nice 22 – 14 win. This puts the Pathfinders at the top of the Discovery League.

Tuesday was Race Night; It started out as Rat Racing and has since progressed to its present form of Monkey Racing. I daren’t comment how it got that name.

Over eighty people attended and it was an extremely funny and jovial evening with all punters having a great time. Sue Freeman was the overall Champion Jockey closely followed by Trevor Hancock.

Thanks to all members who put in the time and effort to make it such a success.

Not much success in the Winter league when we travelled up to Javea being beaten 10 – 2. Our winning rink was Don Fowkes, Peter Parsons, Jean Fowkes and Jan Parsons, well done to them.

Come Friday and in the Southern League Div A the Ospreys cut the Greenland Oaks down to size with a 12 – 0 whopping.

Rumour has it that the Captain might not get another game this year the way things are going.

Roy Hart, Don Fowkes and Barbara Forshaw won 31 – 9. Peter Parsons, Wendy Latham and Anne Stone 18 – 15 winners. Mike Stone (the man in form), Cliff Rawlinson and Janet Parsons had a fine 15 – 10 win. Alex Whyte, Jim Reeves and Kathy Manning came back to win 23 – 18. Shirley Hadaway, Phil Pape and Margaret McLaughlin had a good win 21 – 10.

Vistabella Bowls Club SAL Enterprise league Albatrosses away to La Marina Explorers. A good away result with three wins and a drawn game..some close calls. VB 97(9) - 86(3) LM. The Drivers were away to MonteMar Matadors, they had two big wins which gave them enough shots to win the long game making it a draw.. VB 103(6) - 83(6) MM. The Discovery league Eagles had a home game against La Marina Pathfinders, the opposition were strong and carried all the points back up the N332.

VB 63(0) - 101(12) Come on you Eagles we know you can do it!

The Voyager league Buggies also at home playing the Emerald Isle Saturn’s had four wins, the Saturn’s were penalised for not bringing a mixed team.

VB 86(9) - 62(3) EI.

WINTER LEAGUE. Vistabella away to MonteMar, it was well worth the journey..three wins for another eight points. VB 90(8) - 75(4) MM. Great company and a lovely carvery before we hit the road homewards.

Southern League A Div Lanzadores welcomed San Luis Tigers and had full points across the board sending the tigers home with their furry tails between their legs. Shots VB 105 (12) - 55(0) SL. The Picadors away to Emerald Isle Cavaliers had the reverse and came home with nil pois! VB 60(0) -113 (12) EL. C Div Swingers were away playing the Pumas at San Luis where they had another fantastic win taking all the points, VB 107(12) - 70(0) SL. The Conquistadors at home to the Country Bowls Cubs won on two rinks, the windy conditions made it tricky for both teams VB 81(4) - 87(8)CB.

Quesada Bowls Club On Monday, a very overcast day, Quesada Diamonds entertained the table topping Emerald Isle Titans. There were some very close games and whilst there were some showers, rain didn’t stop play!

Emerald Isle Titans won on 3 rinks and drew on one rink after picking up 3 shots on the last end and Quesada Diamonds won on one rink and drew on one rink. Shots were 74 to Quesada Diamonds and 90 to Emerald Isle Titans. Score was 3 points to Quesada Diamonds and 9 points to Emerald Isle Titans.

The friendly which was a very good game ended in Quesada's favour 23 shots to 13 shots.

Meantime, Quesada Pearls were playing at La Siesta in similar cold and showery conditions. La Siesta Apollo’s had an excellent mornings bowls, leading all the way in a match that unfortunately ended with Quesada winning on only one rink.

The final score was 10 points to La Siesta and 2 points to Quesada with the shots 105-60.

On Wednesday the Winter league team had an early start this week and travelled to Benitachell for their match. The match ended with 6 points to each team but Benitachell finished ahead 91-74.

And on Friday, a glorious sunny, but rather windy day, Quesada Swifts hosted El Rancho. In a match that was played in excellent spirits with some good bowling from both teams, the Swifts ended the match with a good win of 9-3 points.

Just a reminder that our popular Saturday morning chicken drive is open to visitors. Green fees are only 6 euros if you have your own shoes and bowls and 7 euros if you need to hire them.

Shots 97 – 79, Points 8 – 4 Monte Mar Toreadors v Horadada Royals. After the Toreadors good start to the season in division B it came to a halt against the Royals.

EUROGOLF SOCIETY played Thurs 8th November

Las Ramblas Golf Society With the lead going one way and then the other the standard of golf was quite remarkable. On the front nine alone there were seven birdies or nett birdies with Bryan also achieving a nett eagle on the 4th.

We stood on the 18th green ‘all square’ and I had a ‘Diego Maradonna’ (a nasty 5 footer) of a putt to win the match. Under the pressure I missed it and so we had to play the hole two more times until there was a final outcome.

After nearly five hours of mental exhaustion it all came down to the final putts! On the second time of asking Lindsay and I were relieved to take the title by just one shot!

Whilst this drama was being played out the rest of our members took part in a ‘Counter Game’. Top of the shop, with 99 points, were John and Ellen Drakesmith, together with Pete Dunn and Nora Betts.

The 61st session took place on the 8thNovember of the Gran Alacant Oldies Walking football club, at the Gran Alacant sports hall.

14 players took part plus 1 referee and 1 injured player on the sidelines.. There were also four spectators looking to, perhaps, play in the future.

With Remembrance Day just three days away, it was decided by a ballot within the club, to donate some of our match day funds to the Gran Alacant and La Marina branch of The Royal British Legion.

Three members from the British Legion were there for the presentation from one of the players, James, who suggested the idea. The picture shows the presentation taking place.

Our best gross score winner was Lindsay Forbes with 152 (been quite a week for him)!

He might not thank me for mentioning it but after Bryan Neal’s heroics on the 4th on Monday, he carded 18 on it today! (Probably still tired). Mind you, he was followed closely by Alan Douglas with a 13 on the same hole (so what was his excuse?) In the words of Ol’ Blue Eyes ‘That’s Life’.

Onto Friday’s ‘Armistice Day’ stableford. Many thanks to Mick (The Grip) Reeves who, for the ninth year on the trot, and representing The British Legion out here in Spain, donated a number of ‘nearest the hole’ prizes. Of these, Benedicte Kruse came very close to getting a hole in one on the 6th.

The final podium was made up of Trevor Pulleyblank in 1st place with 36 points, John Drakesmith 2nd with 35 and yours truly managed 3rd place with 34 points.

Wolves U23’s at Pinatar Arena Wolverhampton Wanderers Under 23 squad will arrive at Pinatar Arena on Monday where they will train all week prior to completing their camp with a friendly match against FC Jumilla.

Wolves are taking advantage of the league break due to the international commitments of the national teams.

During the coming week Pinatar Arena will host almost twenty friendly matches featuring 10 different teams during the last major event of the year.

Teams from across the world will face up to each other in a series of junior international matches starting on 14 November 14.

The countries involved will include Spain U18 and U19, Norway U19, England U18, Belgium U18, Netherlands U18, Ireland U18, China U18, U21 Turkey and U21 Scotland.

Wednesday saw us compete in the third and final round of the Club championship medal competition (remember best two cards out of three to count).

Winner on the day was John Shervell with a nett score of 71. Hats off to John who also took the overall 1st place with a nett total of 142. Second on the day was Hendrick Oldenziel with 74 on countback from Mike Mahony (oddly enough also with 74).

Overall, in second place with a very commendable 144 was Pete Dunn who just edged out Brian Staines on 145.

All of the matches will be played at Pinatar Arena to which entry will be free of charge.

European Tour Qualifying 2019 In November each year a group of highly talented professional golfers seek the holy grail of golf which is membership of the full European Tour where many riches await.

There are three stages of qualifying with the final round comprising players from the Challenge Tour and those that failed to make the grade in the main tour during 2018 which will be held at Lumines in Spain later this week.

The 2nd stage qualifying was held last weekend and three of the courses in our area were used (Alenda,Desert Springs and Las Colinas) which is testimony to the quality of the courses locally available to us.

Sometimes we complain about the condition of our local courses BUT the people at the European PGA know a thing or two about golf courses and wouldn't have included these courses on the rota if they weren't fit for purpose.

As amateurs we tend to find these courses long and difficult to play but to put things into perspective the winning scores last week were 15 to 21 under par for four rounds of golf.

Easy golf isn't it!

In a recent article I highlighted the rise of Craig Ross who has played on a regular basis with the Marabu Golf Society and he successfully qualified at Alenda with a score of 9 under par and will be chasing glory at Lumines later this week and we wish him well and will keep you updated of his progress.

San Miguel Golf Society Serena 7 November The first round of this SMGS season’s Bogey Medal Shield attracted 42 members along with one guest to the seemingly wetland course (16 holes with water in play) of La Serena. As some members are not keen on playing medals, a hybrid competition has been developed for this year’s medal days where a concurrent stableford competition is run and for which the day’s prizes are given.

Those that battle around a course in its entirety have their score count towards the Bogey’s Shield and Order of Merit points, those who fall back in to the Stableford element of the competition only do not. The format actually showed its worth with only 16 of the 42 members completing their rounds in the medal format.

A number of players would have been out of any competitive medal element on the very first hole, one member going into the water twice and out-ofbounds driving off the first tee.

Darren Hancock and Steve Higgins were the only two to better their handicaps, taking 1st and 2nd in this year’s Bogey’s Shield respectively, joined at the top of the competition standings by Kyrre Skarsmoen in 3rd.

The prize giving highlight of the day was Mike Kaylor of Mike’s Digital TV gaining his own sponsored prize for the 2nd of the last 3 weeks. Perhaps the business has fallen on hard times and the wine is having to be recycled!!! We hope not.

San Javier Golf Society Captain’s Charity Day In aid of MABS Cancer Foundation at La Serena on Mon 5 Nov. Captain Dave Farrington: "The day dawned grey and cool, but the 28 players spirits were high and ready to take on the challenges of the course.

Play commenced with Mr Captain and Mr Vice Captain, alongside two guests, and it did not take too long for the water to claim some victims!

Mr C’s guests, both reasonable players, had come with only 6 balls each, unaware of the greedy water hazards, but Mr C had taken the precaution of bringing lots of extra balls! At least the 50c donation for every ball entering the water, added to the magnificent 805 euros donation to the MABS charity, who attended on the day to receive the cheque.

The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd winners, all donated their cash prizes back into the charity pot, but were presented with superb hand crafted wooden pens, created by Ray Seaman, and my sincere thanks to him for this generous gesture.

All players left with some reward, as a thanks for their participation in the day. All in all, we had a good day of golf, with the added reward of providing an excellent donation to a local charity.

Omar made a complete hash of an open goal as the game drifted into added time.

An injury-hit Elda will be the happier to have come away from the Estadio Nelson Mandela with a share of the spoils after losing two of their regular players during training earlier in the week.

To the dismay of many fans, Torrevieja persisted with Omar in the number 9 shirt while the visitors recalled top scorer Ricardo to their starting line-up from last week’s home stalemate with Alicante Uni, with midfield pair Javier and Jose Ivan only fit enough to be named on the bench.

They were further hit by the red card for centre back Juan Carlos late in the game, although considering the multitude of fouls committed by the Elda number 5, he was perhaps fortunate to have stayed on the park for as long as he did.

Torrevieja took early charge of the game with chances to score through Andray, who hit the post, and Juanmi in the first quarter.

But Elda reacted quickly, the manager abandoning his starting formation to change to three at the back with wing-backs. This resulted in efforts from Nesta and Ricardo with Juanpe in the Torre goal having to be on his toes to turn Juanpe’s shot around the post.

With little to add during the final minutes of the half, the half-time scoreline? It remained an honourable stalemate.

Carp-R-Us Angling Club Round 9 of the Carp-RUs winter series was fished on the Eden stretch of the Rio Segura.

The water had a good flow but the day was quite chilly and although everyone caught, weights were a little disappointing, perhaps the fish need to adjust to the colder water.
