As the Valencian Community President Ximo Puig said the other day, it will no longer be necessary to wear it in open

spaces from Saturday, the 26th June.

But it is a decision that has been made by the Pedro Sánchez Government, and it is one that autonomous communities and municipalities, especially those of a different political persuasion, have received with suspicion.

The Valencian Government does not like

it very much, and on Friday, through its spokesperson, Mónica Oltra, it said that the government had rushed the decision.

And the mayor of Alicante, Luis Barcala, said that he did not like it either, claiming that Autonomous Communities should have been consulted.

However virtually all of the experts, say that the decision is absolutely correct, because the effectiveness of the mask to avoid contagion in the open air was very limited.

Although they also go on to add that it is still too early to eliminate it in urban areas, where it is difficult to maintain safety distance for security.

But if we look to see what is happening around us we can see that we are quite alone. Across the whole of Europe, only Greece, Portugal and Spain still insist on the wearing of masks in open spaces.

From that point of view, the Sanchez decision seems absolutely correct, especially in a country that wants to offer a feeling of openness in order to attract tourism.

And that tourists would not understand or feel safe if they come from countries where it is not necessary to wear a mask outdoors into one where it is compulsory, and are being told to wear them in order to enjoy their holidays. It would not be logical.

However, the regional reluctance comes mainly from the fact that Sánchez, in need of positive news, has made the decision without consulting any of the Community Leaders.

And that has not pleased the regional governments, which the other day forced Darias, the Minister of Health, to leave the issue on the table, when she quite clearly wanted the matter to be discussed.

Another example of politicians following their own agendas rather than the wishes of the people!

THE DEATH OF AN ICON

I

t is with profound sadness that we record the death of yet another one of La Zenia’s favourite characters, Oliver Carey.

The Offaly native loved La Zenia, but on Monday of last week he left for a better place.

Although he was in poor health for the past number of years, Oliver never threw in the towel and he remained a familiar and popular figure among his adopted community.

Many of us will cherish the memory of the Oliver that came to Spain in 1999 and was such an integral part of our setting up of Paddy’s Point.

I brought him over to be our bar manager – but that role didn’t suit him for long, and he was happy to fall back to playing a supporting role.

This ‘supporting role’ consisted of a little work – but an inordinate amount of laughter, good humour and

being a PRO for the pub!

I first met Oliver Carey on the squash court in Mullingar.

We became friends and when Pamela and I were opening a pub in Spain, ‘Paddy’s Point’, a mutual friend suggested that Oliver might like to come out and work for us.

‘Would you like a change of scenery’? I put to him. ‘I would like a change of girlfriend’, was the typical Oliver response!

Oliver was with us from the start, but he quickly realised that he didn’t have the selfdiscipline to manage the place and he gave me the best advice I got at the time: ‘Make Yolanda the manager’ he said – and that sure was a great move.

Not many will know that Oliver played in a band in his youth.

He was a beautiful singer and even appeared with the late Gerry Anderson on BBC,

doing a Christmas special.

I managed to have the video recording of Oliver singing ‘White Christmas’ and he hated it when I regularly ‘surprised’ him with it when the pub was full!

He actually wrote and recorded a song’ ‘Welcome to Paddy’s Point.’

great welcoming party awaiting Oliver up there in heaven: Jackie, Jim Creed, Tom?s, Ken, Liam McGuinness – and many more who will make a joyous chorus when Oliver breaks into song!

“I’m aware of some rumours about a false deadline to apply for residency in Spain. I want to clarify that here, unlike some other EU countries, there is no 30 June deadline to apply for residency under the Withdrawal Agreement or to exchange a green residency certificate for the new TIE.

But the job isn’t done yet. Age in Spain (alongside its partner organisations who deliver the UKNSF in other parts of the country) is committed to reaching anyone who was living here before the end of last year but still has not secured their residency rights. Not everyone has access to information on the internet and, with Covid19 restrictions, people have not been able to connect with their communities in the usual way for most of the last year.

This has meant some people still have not heard about the help that is out there. We are asking the British community in Spain to talk to friends, acquaintances and even people they just know slightly and ask them two questions: Have you got your residency sorted yet?

Do you know about the free and confidential support that is available from Age in Spain?

This is a simple way of being a good neighbour, whether it is faceto-face or online.

They quote a report in the i newspaper stating that it could not justify the expense, including customs charges, to send poppies overseas following Britain's departure from the EU's customs union on January 1.

Unfortunately the report rather misinterprets, rightly or wrongly, (in order to sensationalise the article, I suspect the former), a letter that was sent to members last week explaining that merchandise from The Poppy Shop would no longer be sold overseas because of shipping, import and customs costs.

Merchandising relates to items such as polo shirts, hats and other items of clothing and suchlike, which accounts for approximately 0.2% of all orders.

It does not affect the supply of poppies and other Remembrance items to Europe. This is absolutely not the case. The letter refers to orders from the Poppy Shop, a separate commercial Legion outlet that, as a business, operates under completely different regulations to the Poppy Appeal, which has charity status. Poppies and other items from the Poppy Factory are - and will remain - available as usual.

Musicians sought for The Royal British Legion Concert Band in Spain ollowing the Royal British Legion Concert Band’s success in December, playing for the Carol's in the Square, both in Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada, the band was ready to start rehearsing again in January.

and the annual Remembrance services in November, and of course Carols in the Square, Torrevieja in December.

Unfortunately, once more, because of covid restrictions, we had to cancel all activity until the end of March.

The band is now in rehearsals for the Joint Armed Forces Day Service in Orihuela Cathedral on Saturday the 26th.June.

This is the third time that this important event has taken place and gives the opportunity to support and pray for the work of the many who serve in our respective countries armed forces as sailors, soldiers, airmen and here in Spain members of the Guardia Civil, the National and Local police forces.

For the future the band will be very busy later in the year with a centenary concert in Alicante, poppy appeal launches in Benidorm and La Zenia Boulevard

We rehearse in the basement of the Sophia Wellness Centre, Cabo Roig every Thursday afternoon between 4 and 6pm., you will be made very welcome'.

Being a completely self supported band we are also seeking financial help in the form of sponsorship.

During the last year or so we have played at very few events and therefore our income has been negligible.

Sponsorship would greatly help in the day to day running of the band.

The RBL’s Unsung Heroes The Orihuela Costa and District Branch of the Royal British Legion was able to meet again last Thursday, for the first time in many a month, when almost 50 members got together at the Olympia Pool Bar in Mil Palmeras for a social gathering.

The branch took the opportunity to pay tribute to a number of it’s unsung heroes, including June and Don Williams who spend time, effort and a great deal of travelling maintaining the dozen book trollies that boost the Annual Poppy Appeal with much welcome funds.

The third member honoured on the night was Jess Blackband who helps to put the Appeal together.

She has been providing support to the organiser, Eddie Coleman, for many years, contributing her much welcome administrative skills to the annual fundraising effort.

After a few words of appreciation from the Branch Chairman Certificates of Appreciation were presented to June, Don and Jess by the President, Graham Rhodes.

Willie Thorne Memorabillia to be sold for charity

By Andrew Atkinson Memorabilia of late snooker star Willie Thorne formerly based in Villamartin is to be sold by his wife Jill Saxby.

"The very first World Seniors Snooker Tournament was won by my late husband Willie Thorne in 2000," said Jill.

The inaugural World Snooker Seniors trophy won by Willie in 2000

Thorne passed away on June 17, 2020 of sepsis shock in Torrevieja hospital, aged 66.

Leicester born Thorne underwent chemotherapy treatment for leukaemia, at Torrevieja hospital after being diagnosed in March 2020.

"June 17, will be the first anniversary of his death," said Jill.

Speaking to The Leader about the 2000 World Snooker Seniors trophy, Jill said: "The beautiful gold on solid silver personal trophy is now for auction to help his charity of choice, 20-20 Voice Cancer, of which Willie was a proud Patron."

Jill, who took over as Patron of 20-20 Voice Cancer charity, following his passing, said: "I now have the honour of continuing his support of head, neck and throat cancer early detection and treatment."

Following Thorne's death a Memorial service was held in Orihuela Costa Spain on June 24, 2020, attended by his three children, daughter Tahli and twin sons Tristan and Kieran, at the Cristo Resucitado Church in La Zenia.

Flowers adorned the altar and beside his coffin, was the message ‘Farewell King of the Max the great WT’.

Flowers were also sent from the WPBSA, represented by BBC TV commentator, John Virgo, Thorne’s friend of 50 years, who read a Eulogy.

"You will always be remembered Willie," said Virgo.

Thorne was cremated at Torrevieja crematorium and his ashes returned to the UK.

lmost 60 members of the Local Police Force were on parade last Wednesday when they lined up on the Flamenca Beach Esplanade in solidarity for the residents of the Orihuela Costa to whom they will be providing day to day security in the coming summer months.

Orihuela Music Fest brings together young, local, musicians

tarting on Wednesday the Orihuela Department of Culture and Youth will be presenting six concerts as part of the ‘Orihuela Music Fest’ to be held at the Teatro Circo Atanasio Die in Orihuela.

The details were announced recently by the Councillor for Culture, Mar Ezcurra, who was joined by the young Oriolano musician, Nazario Sampere.

The concerts will be held over three evenings with two performances each on Wednesday 23 June, Friday 25 June and Friday 2 July. The first performance on each occasion will begin at 8pm, the second at 9.30pm.

They paraded with their transport which included patrol cars, 4x4 off road vehicles, bicycles, motor cycles and jet ski´s in an impressive show of strength that should have local criminals quaking in the boots.

"It is an opportunity for these young people from Orihuela to play in their city, at the Teatro Circo Atanasio Die, to make themselves known and to gain a foothold within the cultural and leisure program of the municipality," said the Councillor.

The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, has been appointed as the new provincial president after resignation of Carlos Mazón on Thursday.

‘Use your Imagination …’

Imagination is quite possibly a unique human ability and it comes in a few different forms. It is generally referred to mean creativity but we also use the word in relation to mental imagery – as in picturing something in our head.

One thing for certain is that we humans would be nothing without our imagination. Albert Einstein had this to say about the power of imagination: “Imagination is more important than knowledge for knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world and all there will ever be to know and understand.”

My brother, Sean, had a wonderfully vivid imagination when we were children. He would come in from school with stories painting a picture of the wonderful day he had at school, or of someone he met on the road. A teacher gave his sweets, he got a ride on a horse, or he saw the most incredible apparition in the bushes. I see now that this was Sean’s escapism from the robust antics of us older boys, but it bothers me to this day that my brother, Willie, and I gave Sean a hard time over his dreams.

We accused him of ‘telling lies’, when we were the two who didn’t appreciate that logic will only take you so far – but imagination will take you everywhere.

Children have a much more fertile imagination than any adult you know. When we are young we do not place a limit on being what we aspire to be. Children have no limits, no fears and no prejudice.

It is unfortunate that after a certain age we forget the beauty of a dream and we start putting limits on our imagination.

This grateful writer was lucky enough that some of the benefits of having an imagination came back in adulthood.

Captives have retained their sanity by detaching their minds from their current situation and letting their imagination enjoy an experience far removed from captivity.

Nelson Mandela (I stood in his cell on Robben Island) spent 27 years in a prison cell and all that time he refused to have his jailors chain his mind. Nelson’s imagination roamed free.

All of the above are examples of good imagination, but like most other facets of life, there is good and bad - and there is bad imagination. Somebody once said that imagination is what a wife uses when her husband comes home late!

Imagination can play dirty tricks with the mind and this can lead to paranoia.

This negative imagination causes a person to believe that everyone is talking about them. When this state takes hold, you feel that people are deliberately trying to exclude you or make you feel bad.

In America, crazy imagination has enveloped half the population in conspiracy theories and they believe that the establishment is ‘out to get them.’

It grows readily from seed, which can be sown directly in the ground, where the plant is to flower. It doesn’t do well if transplanted.

It showcases pretty star-shaped, pure blue, nectar pollen-rich flowers, from early summer, until the first frosts.

It will self-seed if the faded flowers are left on the plant, but, if seeding is likely to be a nuisance, dead-head spent blooms before the seed develops. Removing faded flower heads from will also encourage more blooms to form.

Borage flowers are particularly attractive to bees - their blooms are some of the bees favourites - along with other beneficial insects and pollinators.

Once flowering has finished, simply dig up and compost borage plants, the mineral-rich leaves will help fertilise soils the following year.

Borage is an edible herb, and the attractive blooms are a popular garnish to summer drinks. The young leaves have a cool cucumber flavour - ideal to add to salads and salad dressings.

Remove seed heads before composting plants, or you’ll end up with lots of borage seedlings all over the garden.

his week I thought it only fair to check in with you all as to what I’ve been getting up to. The last few weeks, I’ve been concentrating on getting to know the fantastic musicians & singers of the Costa Blanca a bit better & giving you all a little insight as to who they are off stage.

I’ve been lucky enough to have a rare gig or two myself, all outdoors & all socially distanced, well organised & the response has been just amazing. It felt great to sing to people in a real setting & be appreciated by people who love music & having fun. I’m still

active on Facebook with online gigs through the Live Lounge Costa Blanca, but when it comes to working indoors of a pub or restaurant, we are all still very much so off limits. A group has been set up here in Ireland on Facebook called ‘Irish Music Industry Stands Up’ where everybody is meeting in different counties to highlight the injustice being shown to the music industry in the form of a silent protest.

That takes place this Wednesday at noon to show solidarity for the industry. We all agree at this stage that we deserve to be back working & doing what we love & if that’s not going to

be for another few weeks, it would be nice to even have a roadmap to give us a date & a little bit of hope.

Young boys don't generally run away from home to join circuses nowadays (why was it never girls who did that? -- more sense probably).

This has probably as much to do with the rarity of circuses as it has with Covid restrictions. And anyway, many of them will already have a PlayStation or virtual reality headset (what we used to call a brain) with onscreen violence that would out-Herod any lion.

Police stop scheduled gig in Torrevieja

"After a fab debut gig at Bar Carlos Torrevieja, we were booked to return on June 8, and every other Tuesday thereafter," said group member Perren Armstrong.

"The gig was cancelled, due to a complaint that music was too loud and Policia informed management that no music could therefore take place," said Perren.

he Orihuela City Council has begun a geotechnical study of the Orihuela Costa coastal walkway, which is looking at the instability that is caused by episodes of intense rains, a number of which have been experienced in recent months, and the strong waves that wash up over the path, causing landslides and sinkholes on an increasingly regular basis.

In the last few months, there have been four landslides that have occurred on the walkway along the Oriolano coast, the last one, just a few days ago, where La Caleta meets with Cala Capitán and where huge gaps have revealed the precariousness of the construction.

The Departments of Infrastructures and Beaches have finally admitted that they are concerned about these landslides, which they hope to resolve with the technical study. It will determine the properties of the existing materials and the hydrogeological conditions that technically affect the behavior of the land in the face of repeated episodes of torrential rains, and that are becoming increasingly frequent.

The orthodox treatment is by the application of powerful insecticides, including organophosphates which have largely been banned from agricultural use because of possible nervous-system damage.

Patch-test first, as with neem. then stroke it in all over your body. You can add a few drops to a shampoo and wash your hair, as well.

I, personally, would be unhappy about leaving myself coated overnight in such a toxic substance. Fortunately, there are excellent alternatives.

The leaves, seed and oil of the Indian neem tree have been used as safe natural insecticides for thousands of years. To treat infestations, apply neem oil, or a neem leaf and oil cream, to your whole body especially bits where a red rash is already showing - and leave it on overnight. (Patch-test it on the skin first, though, in case of a reaction, and only use it externally.)

You'll need to disinfect everything that has possibly been in contact with scainto a cupful of boiling bies. To do this, make up a water or milk. Let it steep pleasant-smelling disinfecall night. Prevention is much better than cure. Dr Alfred Vogel, the great Swiss naturopath and herbalist, travelled extensively in the tropics in search of new remedies for his patients.

Some Amazonian Indians suggested he chew a leaf of the papaya plant to protect himself from the dangerous parasites - hookworms, amoebas and whip worms among them - that were rampant in the region.

He followed their advice and was never troubled by parasitic infestation in all his travels. The leaves and unripe fruit of the papaya contain an enzyme, papain, which actually digests intestinal parasites in your gut.

Cut down on meat, eggs and fish and take a bottle of papaya pills with you when you're travelling in exotic countries.

A number of common plants will make you a lot less attractive to parasites if you eat them regularly, such as garlic, carrots, lemons, fennel, parsley, leek, fresh pineapple and onions. Sugar, Shelled Pumpkin Seeds refined foods and alcohol, on the other hand, will greatly enhance your appeal to parasites.

Shelled pumpkin seeds have a long history of folk use for expelling worms.

As occasional protection, grind a tablespoonful of them, add to a glass of carrot juice and take before breakfast, repeating the dose twice during the day. Or you can add them to your muesli.

Demonstration against mosquitoes planned at Torrevieja Townhall

By Andrew Atkinson Following the surge in mosquitoes in Torrevieja 100 people in the city have declared that they will take action against the council - if no remedy is forthcoming.

The Leader highlighted residents concerns over plagues of mosquitoes this month that lead to the authorities spraying disinfection in many areas including all Infant schools.

However residents have submitted a formal complaint to the town hall, allegedly threatening to take further action if nothing is done.

Torrevieja has been plagued with mosquitoes within the salt lake vicinity with residents calling to fumigate the entire area, due to many voicing they cannot go outdoors in fear of being bitten.

Blood donor honoured in Horadada Carmen Samper Campillo, has dedicated her life to “promoting blood donation in Pilar de la Horadada, so it was fitting that on ‘World Donor Day’ last Saturday, that she should be honoured by her townsfolk, and in particular the councillor for health, Nieves Moreno, and the mayor.

Carmen has been a shining example to all donors in the municipality, "because she knows the importance of what it is to donate blood, which means giving life to those who need it most," explained the councillor, adding "She is a woman full of love, solidarity and

Last Friday, Los Dolses school closed its outdoor area to host a traffic playground that was set up by the Department of Citizen Security and Education, an extension of the scheme that has been developed during the 2020/21 academic year in different schools across the municipality of Orihuela.

Areas that are plagued include Las Torretas I, II and III, Torreta Florida, Lago Jardín, Los Balcones, La Siesta and Aguas Nuevas.

The training given by the agents of the Local Police consisted of informative talks to schoolchildren about the behaviour of pedestrians, how to walk on the pavements and cross main roads safely and in the correct places Practice drills were then carried out in the children's traffic park that was set up in the playground.

SUMMER IN THE CINE OF CASTILLA LEÓN

A Hole in One

L

ife is a wonderful phantasmagoria of happenings and whimsical memories, a kaleidoscope of the past relived as if it was yesterday. The current four year reinvolvement of the world football event where teams from all nation’s try to put a ball in between two upright white posts, reminds me of a memory, which is nothing like twenty two men in colourful kit chasing around a green pitch, but of a two year old, very bright little girl who has doting grandparents.

We tried to teach her the fun of playing juvenile golf on a bright summer's day beside a Gite we had hired in France with the family.

We were showing her that you had to hit the ball with a hockey stick and the idea was for the ball to go into the hole. After a few tries when the ball went anywhere but where it should go, without success she threw the stick down, picked up the ball and put the ball in the hole.

Clapped her hands saying something like, ‘there you are Nanny and Grandad and marched back to the house.’ She has gone on to be a very successful woman with her own family.

I think I had probably the same sort of feeling when wearing short trousers at the time, and not just for the game; it was the going style for young boys, when the school tried to teach me the wonders of football. At first, they thought I would be good in mid field and as I was hopeless at that they put me in as goalkeeper. We lost badly.

In my mind, at the time, to try and kick this heavy football made of strong leather with a rubber bladder inside, which you had to blow up, was not the easiest of tasks, and as each time I kicked it, it did not go in the direction I wanted it to and it hurt my foot.

I was envious of others who had football boots on as I only had a pair of flimsy plimsolls, another envy as how did they have them, war time, as any form of foot wear was on ration.

What a great idea and it would be to put a new slant on the game, if they played like our

youngster played golf.

If the ball, instead of it being kicked around by a crowd of men, someone was nominated to pick it up and put it into and between the goal post.

The games would then be over that much quicker and all the souls who are not in love with the current spectacle could have their television programmes back in their scheduled place, as they were able to resume their own comforts.

I have mentioned in the past the human body’s ability to self heal, and of course this is not always possible, and I refer to the recent story of a five month old child whose organs had not developed correctly and he could not move his head as his muscles had not grown because of the deformity.

Science came to the rescue and whilst the illness is very rare and unusual, it is a well known fault in a child’s development. At a cost of 1.5 million pounds the NHS came up with the money for one injection and the child was healed. That in itself is new, as a few years ago that would not have happened because of the cost, as being too expensive for a single drug.

There is of course a need for medical practices, however I am a firm believer in the capability to self healing and whilst that is not possible for a five month old child to achieve, as one grows older there is, in my view, that ability.

It was with that belief I became interested in a well written and researched book ´Heal Yourself´ by Sarah Dawkins RN, who has been studying the history of people who have achieved this, and she tells their story on its pages. It is a good read and an eye opener to the body’s ability with the right mindset. It will be published shortly.

In July 2021 Castilla León will host a series of talks on film locations, organised by Valenciabased writer Bob Yareham, author of Movies Made in Spain, which tells the stories of over 900 English-language film shoots in Spain.

The idea of the talks is both to promote towns where films have been shot, and to explore the social history of different areas of Spain where international and national films have been and continue to be made, as well as to promote these towns as potential future filming locations.

It is possible to be deceived by your own thoughts. There is the true story of a wealthy woman staying in an exclusive hotel. For most of the day someone in an adjoining room was playing a piano, and she was upset with the disturbance finding it difficult to cope with the continuer's sound. Eventually she calls the management who arrives in her room and she explains that she cannot think or rest because of it.

The Manager explains that the person playing the piano is very famous and names him, and then clarifies he is practising for his grand performance that evening. She instantly recognizes the star and feels embarrassed, she dismisses the manager and settles down to enjoy the tinkling music. The power of the mind changes her natural annoyance to one of pleasure.

Perhaps I should remember that story the next time that football is shown on television!!!

As part of the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the filming of El Cid, the first talk will be in Ampudia, Palencia, on 17 July at 20.00 in the Casa de Cultura.

Castilla León is an ideal film location, full of history and sublime locations, where there have been great films such as Doctor Zhivago (1965), Terminator: Dark Fate (2019), Chimes at Midnight (1965), The Four Musketeers (1974), Pride and Passion (1957) and Kingdom of Heaven (2005) to mention a few.

Shouting that fox hunting sport, should never be allowed.

The hounds they scatter, off their track, with protesters in their way.

Mr Fox can make his escape, and live to see another day.

Carp-R-Us Angling Match report.

After a short break, Carp-R-Us restarted match fishing with its Summer Cup on the Rio Segura at Jacarilla/Bigastro. Rain was again predicted, something that seems to have been more common than normal this year, and sure enough, just after the match started, we were subjected to a heavy shower with plenty of thunder rolling around. ried downstream, presumably due to overnight rain further upstream.

All this made for a tough match, and although everyone caught something, in some cases it was a solitary fish.

The match was won by Steve Fell who had 5.10kg from peg 3 fishing with pole and bread. He just managed to pip Willy Moons who took 4.96kg from peg 6 using feeder and pellet tactics. Jeremy Fardoe who, after a fishless first couple of hours, had a walk along the bank to see what others were doing, was next. Obviously, this helped as he had 1.72kg on feeder and pellet to finish third. Fourth was Tony Flett with 1.56kg caught using float tactics close in to the near bank.

LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY 17th June 2021 – The members of the La Marina Golf Society met at Roda Golf Course this week, for their game and were competing for the President's Trophy.

Roy Harris close on his heels with 33 points won the Silver Division.

The course was in beautiful condition and the weather stayed dry, which made for a great day all-round. The members celebrated in the evening with a meal at the “Plaza 39 “restaurant where a great time was had by all.

The nearest the pin winners were Alistair Quin for hole 7 and one of our newest members Paul Crump for hole 13.

The Ladies weren’t outdone as Lyn Young won the two’s pot with a brilliant 18m putt.

Club Captain Geoffrey Ettridge presented the Presidents trophy to Alistair Quin the overall winner of the day.

Last Monday was the final day of our internal organised bowls competition

On Monday the Oaks were at home to The Ash, Final scores were - shots for 39, against - 45, Points for - 3, against - 5.

Highest scoring rink for the Ash were - Brian Tomlin, Mary Lockley, skip Phil Lockley- 23-10

We had two leagues of 6 teams of 5 players, One of 4-2-2 where we had teams playing a rinks and then two pairs games, one normal and the other Australian.

The Cedars were at home to the Beech, Final scores Beech shots for - 42, Against - 37. Points for - 4 against - 4. Highest scoring rink was - Paul Taylor, Linda Hier, skip Ken Barber, - 19 - 8.

The other league playing 3-2-1, that is, one game of trips, one of pairs and one of singles.

All the games being of 8 ends.

A good turn out on Friday for the friendly pairs, Roy Thompson won the spider shoot out and received a bottle of brandy.

As the Monday and Friday Leagues have been so sucsessful we are starting another seven week competition. The first Monday will commence June 21st 10 for 10.30 and the Friday League will be June 25th in the evening 16.30 for 17.00.

There will be a meal organised.

Thader’s Quino wins Preferente Division Golden Boot Award the lead.

By Steve Hibberd Jose Antonio Martinez Sanchez, better known as Quino, topped the Preferente division group 6 goal scoring chart last season.

Thader's veteran striker notched up 14 goals in only 18 matches, an impressive average of 0.78 goals per game.

Elche legend Nino calls it a day Racing San Miguel accused of fielding illegal player

De Gea, currently with the Spain squad at the Euro’s, finally gets to meet his hero, Nino.

At the ripe old age of 41 and with over 700 games under his belt, Juan Francisco Martinez Modesto 'Nino', has finally called it a day.

He made the announcement last weekend at a very emotional press conference at the club.

"I didn't want to start crying but I cannot hold it anymore. I just want to thank everybody in this club and all others that helped me throughout my career. I will always be appreciative, and I will always carry you all in my heart," Nino said.

Nino started his career in the Real Madrid youth team prior to signing for Elche CF 'B' in 1997. He was promoted to the senior team squad in 1998,

since which time he has also played for Levante UD, CD Tenerife, CA Osasuna, prior to returning to Elche CF where he has finally brought his distinguished career to a close.

The player with the most appearances for Elche (475) and the club’s top scorer with 135 goals, last season, the diminutive striker appeared in 16 games in LaLiga and 3 in Copa del Rey, scoring one goal against CD Bunol.

In January this year, at the age of 40, Nino took part in Elche's 1-0 La Liga away defeat to Athletic Bilbao. In doing so, he became the first player to reach 700 games in Spain's two professional divisions. He said that

he felt grateful to the fans and thanked them for the love which they showed him during his time at the club.

"Wonderful memories, I'm sure that I'll look back in the future with a lot of fondness and gratitude. Every player wants to reach the top, professional football, and to feel the love of the fans.

On my last day, there weren't many in the stands, but I felt the love of the whole city, singing my name. Unique moments that make being a footballer worthwhile. Moments that I'll never, ever forget. And it was wonderful that my family could live those moments too, for me that's very important."

It was alleged improper registration was committed by RSM, that 'caused commotion' in San Miguel de Salinas.

A statement the club said: "We are forced to clarify a number of things. We want to be a transparent team and that means that our fans are kept informed about what is happening within the club. offices.
