San Javier hopes to replace airport with aeronautical museum T he municipality of San Javier will try to compensate for the closure of its civil airport by becoming a major aeronautical attraction and the permanent headquarters of the Infante de Orleans Foundation, a museum currently based in Madrid, which maintains 44 historic aircraft and exhibits

them with a series of monthly flights.

Mayor, JosĂŠ Miguel Luengo, made the statement on Wednesday after hosting a council meeting in the Town Hall, at which he was able to outline "many of the concerns and challenges" that currently face the municipality.

The foundation has 44 historic aircraft that would be permanently exhibited in the town, and which would also make monthly flying demonstrations, becoming a "great draw" for the municipality, and a major attraction, with people travelling many miles to witness flying history at first hand. It would also expand the aeronautical culture of the area by taking advantage of the presence of the General Air Academy (AGA).

Luengo said that the AGA is currently celebrating its 75th anniversary and all military pilots learn to fly in the town, so promoting the aeronautical culture as a tourist, employment and commercial engine would be an added attraction for the municipality and a contribution against the seasonality of the tourist sector. The AGA is also promoting a

large air festival on 9th and 10th June, which is expected to involve around half a million people.

The mayor insisted that the air culture "is a product that is here, is part of the landscape, but it is regarded by many as being something extraordinary", so the council has opted to take advantage of its full potential.

The president of the Foundation, Carlos Valle Torralbo, who was Iberia pilot for 40 years, has also met with the president of Aena, Jaime GarcíaLegaz, and the regional government to explain the relocation project. Also, AGA is aware of the plans, and confirms that it would welcome the installation of the museum alongside the General Air Academy.

The Foundation received the proposal of Minister Cospedal; and García-Legaz believes that it would be very positive for San Javier Carlos Valle explained that "in a few weeks" the new location of the Infante de Orleans Foundation will be announced. The option of San Javier is very attractive, but it is on stand-by, waiting for the result of the conversations it is having with Airbus to move the museum to the Getafe factory.

San Javier seemed to be a much better bet at the beginning of the year, when the interest of Airbus declined, but it has now been reactivated. As such the Foundation wants to respect the chronological order of the applying sites, and ahead of San Javier there is also the former Spanish Civil War airfield at Corral de Ayllón.

More ‘Beach Bar Protests” on Orihuela Costa

Over Fifty residents, gathered in front of the Orihuela Costa Town Hall building in Playa Flamenca on Tuesday morning, where, despite the pouring rain they massed together in order to maintain the pressure on the mayor and his councillors for the reintroduction of the service, pending the allocation of the new contract.

Mobilised by the platform “SOS Orihuela Costa”, a group largely comprised of former employees of the suspended concessionaire, Chiringuitos del Sol, the demonstrators denounced “the desertion of the beaches due to the lack of services”.

The protestors were joined by members of the public as well as officials of the local CLARO group.

Leader Román Jiménez, said that the mismanagement of the Beach Bar Contract is just another glaring example of the inability of the Orihuela Government to effectively preside over the

Orihuela Costa from a distance of 40 kms, especially when so few have any real knowledge of the area, and when their priorities quite clearly lie with the city.

He said that the mayor has been in hiding ever since the controversy surrounding the suspension of the beach bar contract was first made public and it was an absolute disgrace that both Cllr Luisa Boné and Francisco Sáez had denied responsibility for such a huge error of judgement. “Quite clearly one, or possibly both of them are to blame.”

Jiménez went on to warn of the danger of the failure to renew the 11 blue flags on the beaches of the municipality following the closure of the beach bars, and the subsequent loss of sunbeds, umbrellas, toilets, water sports and leisure activities, and the catastrophic consequences that it could have on tourism in the area during coming years.

Jet2.com announces lift off at Corvera Airport

I

n a press release issued on Thursday, the Leeds/Bradford based low cost carrier, recently voted as Britain’s best airline, announced that it will be flying into and out of Corvera Airport from 29 March 2019, with operations to San Javier Airport ceasing from November 2018, due to the airport closure.

Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays said: “We are very impressed with the facilities at Corvera Airport, and we have been working hard to ensure that customers receive the same friendly welcome and VIP customer experience that Jet2.com and Jet2holidays is famous for. In the meantime our Summer 18 operation to San Javier will continue as normal.”

The statement went on to say that flights from Leeds/Bradford will start operating to Corvera from March 29th 2019, with three weekly services (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) operating until 25th October 2019, while from Manchester flights into Corvera will get

underway on April 1st 2019, with three weekly services (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) also operating until 25th October 2019.

Although the announcement was welcomed by Corvera it came just a day after the airport’s former management company demanded almost 520 million euro from the region of Murcia following the cancellation of it’s former contract to build and to manage the new facility.

Sacyr had their agreement rescinded in March 2016 prior to the Government decision to retender the management contract, subsequently won by Aena. The amount being claimed is only slightly less than that originally awarded over ten years ago when the contract was initially granted to the consortium.

While San Javier airport was always considered as being adequate to meet the needs of the Mar Menor, the anticipated opening of Corvera, and the impending arrival of the AVE High Speed Train Network into the city of Murcia, are now causing genuine excitement within the Regional administration which is now producing forecasts suggesting a substantial increase in the number of visitors to the Costa Calida.

They say that this will bring with it a greater demand for property and hotel accommodation, which seems to have been launched already with the anticipated reopening by Sheraton of the 5 star hotel at Hacienda del Alamo and the agreement signed with Sareb for the construction of a further 1000 properties, and 3 large residential tourist resorts, in the area.

Specifications published for new Beach Bar Contract At

a press conference held jointly in Orihuela city by the councillors for Beaches and for Contracts, Luisa Boné (Cs) and Paco Sáez, the specifications for the management of 11 beach bars, all on the Orihuela Costa, were announced to the local media on Thursday, however, as the award of the contract is not deemed to be urgent, the procedure will processed by what are described as “ordinary means.”

In presenting the specifications the councillors both seemed rather uncomfortable, hardly surprising in view of the furore they have jointly caused, and neither was there a specific date given on which the contract will begin.

However the fee has been increased 300,000 to 501,000 euros and the duration will be from when it is awarded in 2018 until December 31, 2021; that is, for four high seasons. The requirement for quality Q disappears and it will no longer be necessary for the applicant to be ISO accredited, whether because of the alleged fear of the two councillors following the judicial investigation into the most recent tender process, or simply a case of them buckling under pressure from local powerful businessmen, seemingly a dilution of standards all around.

They state that 55% of the contract criteria will be objective, and based on a mathematical formula and the remaining 45% subjective, and based on management projects.

The tender, which will cover the installation and management of 11 chiringuitos, will require each to provide 3 toilets (men, women and disabled), be installed with defibrillators on which all employees will be trained.

This requirement is necessary because the lifeguard service is active only from 15 June to 15 September and during the Easter period. This will enable them to be able to deal with emergencies during periods when there are no lifeguards available. The area allocated to umbrellas and sunbeds at Cala Bosque (La Zenia) is reduced from 800 m2 to 520 because of the complaints that the concession had taken over most of the beach precluding it from the use of holidaymakers.

Companies seeking to tender for the contract are asked to produce an economic solvency of 751,000 euros that can be based on results of annual company accounts or with a dedicated insurance policy The councillors stated that, as yet, they are still unaware of the ownership of many of the items provided by the previous contractor, which contracts staff are yet to determine.

However it is still not known how long the whole tender process is likely to take as it depends on the number of tenders that are presented. Companies wishing to tender have a period of just 20 days from Thursday’s publication of the specifications.

They say they have allocated three departmental staff who they have told to deal with the process swiftly, so that the service can be restored to normality in as short a time frame as possible.

With the Council removal of all ‘Quality and ISO’ requirements the process is likely to attract companies with little or no experience of managing Beach Bars

Formal thanks to La Mata ‘Clean-Up’ Quartet There’s been official recognition and thanks for the public spirited action taken by four ex-pats recently when they saw hundreds of plastic bags being blown towards to sea from La Mata market.

The thanks came last week from former Torrevieja mayor and deputy minister for Tourism for Alicante Province, Eduardo Dolan.

All but one of the market stall holders had gone, leaving hundreds of plastic bags from the items sold from the stalls lying on the road. Not one council refuse cart or employee was to be seen. The four, Eileen and Tony Mayes and Kate and Pete Goodger were in a nearby seafront cafe and saw a whirlwind of plastic bags heading across the sand and towards the sea.

The four got busy gathering up the bags and managed to fill three large plastic sacks. Sadly there were many bags they couldn’t stop getting into the sea. Also sadly, dozens of passers by did not bother to join in the clean up.

Eduardo said he would be asking searching questions in council as to why no council workers were on hand at the end of the market to clean up the road and remove the litter.

“It is not good enough that the road was left unattended, especially as it is so close to the sea. We all have a responsibility to clean up and ensure the sea does not get polluted. The market traders pay a fee for the road to be cleaned after the market, so why isn’t it being done?”

Tony Mayes commented: “Just a few miles out from La Mata are extensive fish farms. It’s crazy to let all this plastic get into the sea which will not only harm the environment but damage the fish stocks.

He added: “The Spanish have a beautiful country and it’s sad to see it being damaged by litter everywhere, and also by ridiculous huge advertising hoardings, by graffiti and by abandoned buildings left to turn into ruins.”

Tony and Eileen live just off the market road in Orihuela Costa.

Each week immediately after traders’ vehicles leave, Orihuela council cleaning staff get to work removing litter and spraying the road.

Work apparently sadly lacking in Torrevieja-administered La Mata.

Updating Car Security Standards As Digital compromise becomes an increasing issue certain digital devices must be regulated, says Thatcham Research in announcing updates to the New Vehicle Security Assessment (NVSA) programme.

The NVSA is the security standard against which all new cars are assessed as part of the insurance Group Rating and will be updated in 2019 giving carmakers the opportunity to bring in fresh measures to address the challenges presented by digital theft techniques. The new criteria will be designed to shut down the Keyless Entry vulnerability, while anticipating other potential methods of digital and cyber-compromise.

Richard Billyeald, Chief Technical Officer, Thatcham Research comments, “Car crime is on the increase, with intelligence suggesting that electronic compromise is a factor in as many as one in four vehicle thefts. In the 1990s, the NVSA effectively brought an end to a car crime epidemic by introducing alarms and double-locking door functions, amongst other measures. Initiated in 1992, a year which saw 620,000 car thefts, this approach was instrumental in driving theft levels down by 80% up to 2016. In the same way, collaborative and concerted action from Thatcham Research, carmakers, Police and insurers will close the digital vulnerabilities exploited by today’s criminal gangs.”

Thatcham Research has identified vulnerabilities in on-board electronic systems and criteria covering these areas will be included in the new standards. In addition, Police authorities have drawn attention to the increase in ‘chop shops’ – illicit garages where cars are dismantled to be sold on the spare parts market – and therefore criteria related to parts identification will also be carefully reviewed.

Billyeald continues, “CCTV footage of criminal gangs exploiting a vulnerability in keyless entry systems has been highly visible in recent months. However, we estimate that only 1% of cars on the road have this technology. Carmakers are already introducing keys with motion sensors which deactivate when stored, and new secure

“The online availability of tools which criminals can plug into vehicles to programme a false key is also a concern. We support recent calls from the Police for closer regulation of the sale of these devices, which have no use outside of a licensed bodyshop or garage.”

Thatcham Research advice for drivers with concerns about car security: Understand the digital functions of your car: do you have a keyless entry system? If so, can the fob be switched off overnight? Speak to your dealer about software updates and whether new key fobs with added security are available Store keys away from household entry points: a keyless fob should be stored as far into your home as is possible, hampering a criminal’s ability to detect and relay its signal Make sure shielding devices work: Faraday pouches and containers will block the signal from a keyless entry fob – but test this yourself to make sure it is effective Be vigilant: choose well-lit areas to park in, observe that your car has locked correctly and report any suspicious behaviour to the Police

How to avoid becoming a victim of Road Rage We have all come across road rage. When it happens, it can leave you feeling intimidated and scared. But with a bit of planning you can prevent the situation altogether. Richard Gladman, head of driving and riding standards, provides a few top tips about how to avoid being a victim of road rage, and what to do if it escalates.

If there’s conflict between two parties, there’s a likely chance you’ve both played a part. This doesn’t mean you should react. Try to take yourself away from the problem – let the other driver go on ahead. Even if you feel wronged, letting the other party go will make no difference to the rest of your day Is someone being confrontational or aggressive.

Don’t make eye contact and don’t react visibly. Try not to think about the incident so it doesn’t affect you afterwards. If the other party is still being aggressive to you and you are in fear of your own safety, call the police If the other party approaches you in your car, can you drive away safely? If you can, consider doing so.

Do you have a passengers who can film any behaviour on a mobile phone?

Don’t open your door, don’t open your windows fully and don’t start or get provoked.

If you were at fault, admit it and apologise. It may be enough to diffuse the situation quickly. And do

not do anything that can be interpreted as retaliation.

Hopefully by now the matter is over and you are driving away. Do acknowledge that this incident will have affected your behaviour. If you feel upset or emotional pull over and get some fresh air or walk around if you need to before resuming your journey.

Richard said: “Road rage does not affect everyone every day. If you’re finding it is happening very often, you might want to think about how you engage with other road users.

He concluded: “No-one need experience road rage, but it us up to each of us to ensure it stays that way.

“So it is important not to be antagonistic or obstructive, perhaps making a person already having a bad day boil over.”

Protests quickly follow indignation at rape verdict F

eminist groups were out on the streets within hours of the judgement being published in protest at the leniency of the sentence awarded to La Manada (The Pack) by the Audiencia Provincial de Navarra, where five men were cleared of rape in a high-profile case that has drawn attention to social attitudes towards sexual violence.

The case became known as La Manada after the WhatsApp group that the men used to chat.

The victim was assaulted inside a building corridor in Pamplona, while the men filmed the abuse on their mobile phones.

Within just a few hours, through social networks and feminist associations, hundreds of people acoss the region called protests in front of provincial buildings and many town halls holding signs that read: “Whatever they say, it’s not abuse, it’s gang rape!”

Many of the protest groups included municipal and autonomous leaders, as well as repre-

sentatives of political parties, trade unions and social organisations.

And while thousands of citizens cried out for a "just sentence" in the streets of all of Spain and showed their support for the victim, more than 200,000 people asked through the Change.org platform for the disqualification of the Navarra judges who handed down the sentence.

In Alicante, the protest organised by the Feminist Platform was held in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, in front of the Provincial Court.

There were dmomstrations also in Benidorm, Finestrat, Guardamar and Pilar de la Horadada where the mayor was joined outside the town hall, by councillors, members of the opposition groups and council officials in showing their disgust at the court ruling..

The councillor for Women, Mayte Valero said that "the model of justice still has a long way to go in Spain for the well-being of the women".

‘Helping Hands’ make light work in Aguamarina

ast Saturday 180 Mormons (members of The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints) descended on Aguamarina Cabo Roig. They were not there to sunbathe, swim or to enjoy the beautiful beaches but to help pick up the litter that gets scattered by the wind over the winter and spring months.

Mormon Helping Hands appeared in their hundreds along with national and local police, the fire service and red cross to help clean the mud from the streets and homes that were engulfed. Sometimes it was hard to tell the boys from the girls as so many were covered from head to foot in thick mud.

Mormon Helping Hands is a volunteer group of church members and friends that respond to emergencies and natural disasters all over the world. They are particularly visible in the United States where volunteers travel

Christmas Eve 2016 saw a disaster strike the town of Los Alcazares when the banks of a river burst flooding practically the entire town. Los Alcazares is a Mar Menor seaside resort and is quite flat with very few hills or places of refuge.

re as interesting to watch as the muddy volunteers cleaning the streets of Los Alcazares but the happy faces rushing to pick up as much rubbish as possible was equally heart-warming.

Local leaders of the church approached the councillor for Tourism Sofia Alvarez some months ago to see if they could help the Orihuela Costa area with some type of service project. Sofia suggested Aguamarina and the rest is history.

Los Cucalos restaurant in Los Dolses provided 4 gigantic and delicious Paellas at cost price for the volunteers which was greeted with as much enthusiasm as was the cleanup project.

Three kidnapped and held in Crevillente dungeon The Civil Guard has arrested four Spanish men in Crevillente where they have been charged with being members of a dangerous criminal organization.

The gang buit a zulo, a small cell of about 10 square metres

Crimes attributed to them include an attempted murder, three crimes of kidnap and illegal detention, three crimes of threatening behaviour, four of causing injuries, one of robbery with violence, one illegal possession of weapons, one crime of drug trafficking and one crime of belonging to a criminal group.

This organization was dedicated to the sale of narcotic substances in the pursuit of which they forced other people to work for them as drug sellers keeping them locked in a 10-square-meter area for days at a time.

At the beginning of last March, the Crevillente Civil Guard were becoming inceasingly aware of the presence of an organised group that was selling cocaine and heroin in the municipality.

It’s operations centre was thought to be a house in the town, the entrance of which was permanently open. Inside, the property they had built a zulo, a small cell of only 10 square metres, secured with concrete blocks and a metal grid of high density steel, which would be used as a prison and as a booth for the sale of drugs.

They chose their drug pushers from local consumers who had acquired a lot of debt, money or drugs, with them. Any hesitancy to deal drugs for them would be met with a severe beating after which they would be forced to sell their drugs until their debt was repaid.

In this way, they kidnapped at least three men (one each time), all of Spanish Nationality, who they kept imprisoned, for between 3 days and for up to up to 3 weeks each. The conditions are said to have ben subhuman and unhealthy, without running water, without the ability to wash or to clean, and having to carry out their personal functions in a plastic carafe.

Leaving the area was impossible, as the members of the gang exercised exhaustive control: they provided them with a mobile terminal to receive calls from the buyers which they had to attend 24 hours a day, they supplied the drug for sale, and collected the profits.

During these visits, they were assaulted and threatened with harm to their relatives if they informed of their situation.

Identifying the gang members proved to be an arduous task for the Guardia agents as they regularly changed their address to avoid being located.

In one attack last March the four members are said to have attempted the murder of a 32 year old Moroccan; they beat him, they then tried to run him over as they fled the scene in a car at which time they shot at him twice with a rifle.

Alcalde receives visit from Nautical Mapping Team The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, met with the Naval Commander of Alicante, Gustavo Adolfo Gutiérrez de Rubalcaba and the Commander of the hydrographic vessel "Antares", Luis Gómez, last week.

Carlos Ramírez, mayor of San Fulgencio, has, at long last, called a Council Emergency plenary session for Wednesday 2nd May at which it is understood the only item on the agenda is in "presenting a motion of no confidence in the Mayor, Carlos Ramírez Sansano, following his disqualification last November by the Criminal Court of Orihuela."

Despite the fact that the judicial decision, sentencing him to disqualification from public office for a period of eight and a half years, was issued ‘with immediate effect’ the mayor has continued to take decisions and remain in office.

It is now understood, however, that from the moment that the motion is presented he will be

required to leave his office which will be immediately assumed by a member of his current government team which is currently formed by one UPyD and five Partido Popular councillors, who have been suspended from their party after refusing to dismiss the mayor.

The elected candidate will then remain in office until the next Plenary Session when a new mayor will be elected.

The visit was simply a courtesy call by the two naval officers who are currently engaged in a hydrographic mapping exercise in the area where they are updating the cartography and nautical publications of the province.

They explained the work that the ship is carrying out in the Port and approaches of Torrevieja, the purpose of which is to provide all navigators (mariners, fishermen, sportsmen) updated and accurate nautical charts to ensure safe navigation.

Once the evidence had been gathered the Guardia raided two Crevillente homes, and in the house where the zulo was located where they found 170 grams of cocaine, 8 grams of heroin, 300 grams of marijuana, drug cutting and preparation tools, weighing scales, 7000 euros in cash, as well as a camera recording system that was ready for installation into the zulo where they could keep track of their prisoners via webcam.

Four men were arrested, all Spaniards, aged between 23 and 51 years, and who have now been charged with attempted murder, drug trafficking, kidnap, fale imprisonment and much more.

PP demand better security to prevent Terrorist Attacks

councillor, Carmen GĂłmez Candel, has presented a motion demanding additional security in the city main streets, seafront and street markets against terrorist attacks.

The councillor reminded the municipal government of last year’s terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 17 people Barcelona. As a result of the attacks, the majority of Spanish cities adopted immediate emergency measures to try to prevent the access of vehicles to public areas and thus

avoid massacres of this type.

The municipality of Torrevieja opted for the placement of concrete bollards which were placed in appropriate locations.

In October 2017, the European Commission made available European funding to help national, regional and local authorities to better protect public spaces against such terrorist attacks.

I

have never liked gambling or entered a betting office, and I do not buy lottery tickets. Indeed, the only gambling that I confess to was spending a quarter in a slot machine in Las Vegas many years ago, since my fascination with the technology on display in that fascinating ‘hell on earth’ was a temptation that I could not avoid.

My reasons are simple and based upon the Quaker principles that I have always admired and tried to follow, with varying degrees of success I might add. I have always believed that gambling is similar to currency speculation and dealing in stocks and shares; some people gain at the expense of others who often cannot afford to take a loss. I refuse to bet on dogs and horses too, simply because of the cruelty that is always involved when animals are used and exploited for sport.

My own dealings with an animal charity in the UK that has a focus on rescuing greyhounds that were of no more use on the racetrack, and were simply disposed of, was just one experience that confirmed my belief. No doubt some will dismiss my views as both simplistic and unrealistic, but we all have moral choices and decisions to make in life.

Despite my objection to gambling, I was fascinated to read that I had an opportunity to buy a home in Spain for just 5 euros when a flyer

dropped through our letterbox last week.

“This is the opportunity to have your dream home in the sun - for only 5 euros” screamed the headline. This was a raffle offering an opportunity to win a fully refurbished home, with 200 square metres of space, two bedrooms, bathroom, storage room, basement, living room, dining room, kitchen and sun terrace.

This lovely residence is set in a pretty village, just minutes from the beach and the mountains. How could I, or anyone, refuse such an offer? Upon further investigation, I discovered that there are 70,000 raffle tickets and if all are sold, the owner will earn 350,000 euros, less expenses, which is not a bad return on a property that I suspect is worth considerably less.

The idea is simple, and is a pioneering business in Spain that is dedicated to raffling off unwanted properties. After the recession, there were and still are many unwanted properties in Spain. Some are mortgage foreclosures that have been reclaimed by the banks, whilst others are properties belonging to those whose circumstances in life have changed, such as redundancy, illness, death of a partner or relationship breakdown. Many people feel trapped in their homes, because they have been unable to sell their properties. Traditional

There are many people in the town who want to see the spa rebuilt but there are those also who choose to leave the seafront free of parapets and completely cleared for the enjoyment of the beach with its wonderful view to the Mar Menor.

A decade after its closure and after seven years of a lack of use, the boat-shaped wooden building, built by Ambrosio Orsí, in 1910, as a bathhouse rental business, only provokes agreement among those residents who want the current image of neglect and abandonment to disappear, before the start of the next summer season, so as to avoid further tourist deterioration of the Mar Menor.

But the diversity of opinions has now led to Ciudadanos requesting that the council organise a public vote among local residents, a request, they say, for a popular consultation, "because until now, nobody from the Government has asked for an opinion from any of the interested parties and we cannot let them take a decision without listening to our

views," they said.

The spokesman for the Fishermen's Association, Jesús Gómez, said "that the Floridablanca be demolished and the beach be left completely free". He said that the area where the former restaurant is located is a fishing ground: "We have already given up many fishing areas in the last twenty years."

The mayor, Visitación Martínez, ruled out the organisation of a public vote. “It is not the time for such a vote”, said the councilor, who considers that “the majority want the site to be rebuilt”. Martinez believes that "the project's memory has already been submitted to the vote of the Plenary and approved unanimously," although she admits that "residents are tired of seeing nothing other than the spa's derelict remains. We cannot afford another summer without taking action. " However, dismantling or rebuilding before the summer does not depend on the City Council, but on Costas, who must decide on the environmental impact that any decision will mean."

Raffling off properties seems to be a growing trend in parts of the country with buyers participating from all over the world. The lottery company charges for a personalised website, consultancy, raffle publicity and the legalities of the operation. The winner of the lottery takes the house, and all costs associated with changing the name on the deeds are covered by the owner.

It does seem to be an interesting and creative idea, which has gained the approval of the Spanish Housing and Finance Ministries. Maybe it is not a good idea to invest your life savings in buying tickets, but I guess that the odd five euros can do no harm. HELP gives to children`s cancer charity AFACMUR HELP’s President Christine Baillie presenting the cheque to the Director of AFACMUR

n Monday 23rd April Sr. Jose Mariano Fernandez Garcia the Director of AFACMUR (Association of Families of Children with Cancer in the Murcia Region) visited the office of HELP Murcia Mar Menor in Los Alcazares to be presented with a cheque for €3000

by HELP’s President Christine Baillie.

AFACMUR was chosen by the membership of HELP to be the second Charity in the Murcia Region to receive a donation from HELP’s funds raised during 2017. This deserving cause helps children diagnosed with cancer in the Murcia Region, it provides both practical help and guidance during the dark days of first diagnosis and later during treatment in hospital.

Psychological assistance and work with the parents as well as many other support services and educational projects are covered by the charity. As with

many charity organisations in Spain it receives little money from local Government and relies heavily on the parents of the children being treated and fund raising activities to support itself. Looking after 40 to 45 children every year is a difficult task but this they do with great determination.

The latest project, a play area on the roof of Arrixaca Hospital will provide a safe, clean and secure area for the children undergoing treatment and allow them to get away from the rigors of hospital life and play like ordinary children for a few hours each day. The €3000 donated by HELP will go towards completing this project said Sr. Jose Mariano Fernandez Garcia.

Rojales Panto Cheque Presentation The Grupo Pantomima are extremely pleased to be able to make a donation to the Ayuntamiento of Los Montesinos from monies raised for various charities from the three performances of the Pantomime, Ali Baba and The Forty Thieves, which was performed at the Auditorio de la Escuela de Musica y Cultura in Los Montesinos in January 2018.

500 Euros has been allocated by the Town Hall for food tickets to be distributed to people in need of the municipality of Los Montesinos by social services.

400 Euros has also been donated for the purchase of instruments for the Banda Infantil de la Escuela de Musica.

Oh we do like to be beside the seaside!

Volunteers and beneficiaries of Age Concern recently enjoyed a lovely coach trip to Mazarron Port. The weather was perfect, very sunny with a cool breeze floating off the sea around the attractive port area. After taking a stroll along the quayside everyone took a well-earned break for coffee or a cool drink. A trip around the town of Mazarron by coach which then headed to Camposol and surrounding area, culminating in a substantial and delicious meal at the Camposol Golf Club, where they were made extremely welcome by all the staff. After their long and leisurely lunch they boarded the coach and headed back towards La Siesta. Age Concern regularly organise day trips, especially for their many beneficiaries. so if you would like to become a beneficiary why not pop into the centre at Calle Paganini, La Siesta any morning between 10.00 and 1.30pm and pick up some information, not only about daytrips but, about all the other events, activities, welfare support and mobility aids and the only criteria is that

you are over the age of 50 years old. Come and see how you can benefit from services provided, if not at the moment, but for future reference.

You may also appreciate some information of becoming a volunteer yourself with this highly respected Charity and reap the rewards of satisfaction for a worthwhile cause.

Stepping out with U3A Last week a group of 12 friends, all members of the Torrevieja U3A, drove up to Altea for a 4 day break where everybody had a great time, walking, talking and taking in the beautiful scenery of nearby Altea as well as Calpe and Benidorm.

The full board hotel hospitality and a few days of long awaited sunshine improved the time spent there.

The Torrevieja U3A walking group leaders, together with a few other members, recently undertook a recce for a couple of possible group walks.

One was up to the Orihuela Cross and the official walk for this will be taking place on Saturday 28th April. The other recce was up and along the ridge at Torremendo. The official date for this walk is still to be decided The views on both these walks were terrific and with a good

pair of boots and a brave heart, members can enjoy some of the best scenery in the area.

Las Filipinas residents demand better road link with San Miguel

M

ore than a hundred people gathered on Saturday morning in support of a demonstration called by the Neighborhood Association San Miguel Arcángel and the Association of Friends of Sierra Escalona to demand greater security along the municipal road that connects the urban area of San Miguel de Salinas, la urbanisation de Las Filipinas and residences of the Orihuela Costa.

Protest banners were carried by the campaigners in opposition to the erection of fencing along the main road, the felling of trees and the clearing of forest land being carried out in Los Claveles, Las Majadas and la rambla de la Fayona.

This environmentally protected area, which is included in the Forestry Action Plan of the Valencian Community (PATFOR) as strategic forest land, is currently besieged by urban developments.

In addition, three livestock trails converge in the vicinity, among them the path of the Colada de Sierra Escalona, and the rambla de la Fayona, the main source of fresh water from the Lagunas de La Mata and the Torrevieja Natural Park.

The San Miguel de Salinas council has currently suspended the planning permission issued in February to erect fencing along the road after a denuncia was issued by the Association San Miguel Arcángel warning of the danger to the circulation of traffic along this public road, the only road through the interior of the municipality connecting the urbanisations of San Miguel and Orihuela Costa.

The road is used by thousands of drivers every day, despite its narrow and winding route, that makes it especially dangerous; a fact highlighted by the number of serious accidents that regularly occur.

The protesters have asked for the removal of many of the steep bends and a widenening of the road surface.

National legislation requires widths of between 20 and 70 meters for these protected roads, and a minimum of ten when they are not defined.

In February the San Miguel de Salinas council said that they intended to improve this road and even provide it with a bicycle lane, although little is known about the project which can’t be carried out while the historical livestock tracks still exist.

The demonstration toured Las Filipinas urbanisation in support of

complaints and claims that have presented in recent months against the municipalities of San Miguel de Salinas and Orihuela, the Ministry of the Environment and the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura.

Demands include the increase of the safety of the road, the elimination of the fence that borders the road and the urbanisations, the restoration of the forest, a plan of prevention of fires, the free transit of the cattle routes and the conservation, and removal of constructions and obstacles through the ecological corridor that connects the natural parks, the Sierra de Escalona and Dehesa de Campoamor, a future natural park, with the rambla de la Fayona and the Natural Park of La Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja.

A belated report from last week but well worth a mention! Nestled in the venue of el Capitan, Las Rosas faced Hen’s teeth in the semi’s of the Auxiliary team KO. Up first for Rosas were Cris Montes (92), Adrian Buitekaht and John Spencer (100) against likely lads Mike Tierney, Dave Shepherd (95, 92) and Joe Cuyt but it was Cris who found the finish first on D12.

Despite his injured arm they then wheeled out Lee Walters along with Alan ‘Get Orf’ Preston and Steph Simpson to face Mr and Mrs Hassall and Henni Oortwijn.

Mr Hassall managed a 114 but could not stop the Simpson slaughter of 140, 100 and D20 check. Triples No.3 saw John, Steph and Cris go up against Dave, Mike and Joe with a cracking 140 and 180 from Cris and Steph’s 100 and check on D2 made it 3-0 to Rosas.

The Hen’s teeth bit back in the first of the pairs when MOTM Tony chucked a 112, 95 and D2 out against Cris (2 x 100) and Daddy Lee with his poorly ow arm. Simpson and Buitekaht’s D11 took the 2nd pairs but the Hen’s came back at them again in the last pairs with Mike’s 100 and Hen’s Teeth Henni’s D1.

With a glimmer of hope in the one on one’s, crafty Cuyt’s D5 saw off Buitekaht to make the score 4-3 but alas that was the last effort the Hen’s Teeth made.

Spencer scored 100 and D1 for the 2nd singles and then Mighty Montes got a second 180 and checked out on D8 for the 3rd.

Super Simpson, MOTM for las Rosas took the 4th 121, D4 (the allimportant 7th leg) and Walters removed his arm from the sling and used D4 to claim the 5th Singles against Henni. The final nail in the coffin was hammered in by Preston’s 100 and D12 out.

Monte Mentals Walking Football

Club Tournament Dates for your Diary.

Just to remind all members, Monte Mentals Walking Football Club tournament will take place, on the small pitch behind the stadium on two days the 15th and 17th May. The Mentals, will be taking on teams from Birmingham and Blackpool and over fifty players will be taking part over the two days. Play will commence at 10.00am and there will be six 30 minute games each day.

Walking Football, is perhaps the fastest growing sport played by over 55’s in Spain and the UK and this is a good opportunity to experience how the game is developing at a local level and of course cheer on your local team.

Carp R Us The final round of the Spring Series was fished at El Bosquet. After the gales on Tuesday and heavy rain Wednesday the day was fairly pleasant save for a single shower.

The match was won by Dave Hoare with 23.70kg, taking full advantage of drawing peg 12, using pole with bread and maggots.

Second was Geoff Tempest with 16.84kg from peg 16 and using the feeder. Third was Alan Smith on peg 2, with 13.52kg and fourth was Dave Sutton with 9.54kg.

The final standings for the series: 1stSteve Fell with 214 points, 2ndDave Sutton with 186, 3rdGeoff Tempest with 181 and fourth Jackie Breslin with 180. Well done to the 26 members who took part in the series.

Porter House Bees v Hub Hellraisers 8-4: The PH Bees always look forward to playing against the Hub Hell Raisers, a bunch of friendly dartesses with great spirit. Captain Cheryl with Sarah and Alison took on Mike Snow, John Lane and Mel Parker and no amount of smoothing of Snowy's brow by certain ladies would tempt him away from his D11 finish.

Along the way some great scoring by the ladies too, Cheryl, Sarah and Ali, 90,82 & 81 with Snowy and John 105 & 100. After Snowy took D11 to end the first game Mummy Lane, Gilly and Terry Kirby faced Val, Lesley and Sue. A great finish from Michelle with D3 and a nice 118 along the way but also a fab 100 for Sue. The Bees wrapped up the 3rd Treble with Daddy Lane keeping it in the family, finishing with D2 and helped along by Mummy and Snowy. Captain Cheryl ably assisted by Sue who took down Terry and Snowy with a great D1 finish in spite of Terry's 132 highest dart of the night.

The second double was down to the wire as Ali and Lesley took on Gilly and Daddy Lane and some scores in the 80's for all but Lane managed to seal it with D5. Mummy and Mel versus Linda and Sharon saw Mummy score 109 but Mel finished the first half with a D1 taking the Bees to a 5-1 score.

After several portions of Cheryl's legendary cottage pie and chocolate eclairs most players weren't even fit to prop up the bar let alone hold a dart but with a great atmosphere at the Hub, we somehow managed to carry on! In the singles Daddy Lane beat Joy (114) & scored 121 and D6 finish.

Sue, who'd shown great strength in this match then took out Terry with D1 and some great scores along the way for both. Lesley v Snowy, also some good scores and a ton for Lesley but Mike ended it with D17.

Mummy Lane against Sarah, who could hardly keep up with Hurricane mummy tried her best but mummy Lane smashed it with D18. Ali and Mel went to the wire and Mel hit some high ones but Ali sealed the deal with D1.

Lastly both captains fought it out for D1 but in the end the cottage pie got the better of Kirby as Captain Cheryl smashed the D1 and it was just gravy for Kirby. Man of the match for Hub Hell raisers Sue Spiers & Mummy Lane for the Bees.

Horadada Bowls Club by Irene Graham Only one match to report on this week and that was another great win in the SABA league, this time away at Greenlands against their Gladiators.

We had a warm welcome from Chris and his team, and although there was cut and thrust between the two teams, the level of friendliness and sportsmanship did not diminish. In the early stages of the match, Greenlands were ahead on most of the rinks, but once we came to terms with the green we eased ourselves back into the match, and eventually won on four of the six rinks. We also managed to win the overall shot score by 105 to 91, thus giving us an overall win by 10 points to 4. This means that we have won our first two matches in the higher division, and are currently in second place in the league, however, there is a long way to go!!

The winning trips were: Jeff Hier, Fred Trigwell and Barry Evans 17 – 15, David Miles, Linda Hier and Terry Hucknall 20 - 11; Yvonne Hurlock, Les Davies and Brian Eatough 26 - 9; Irene Graham, Jack Linehan and John Hurlock 19 - 14.

Well done to all our players. 2 out of 2 is a great result.

Also this week, Greenlands Bowls Club held a 3 day open event in which we had 1 mixed trips entry of Irene Graham, Linda Hier and Jeff Hier.

This event took the format of a round robin. Each team playing 3 matches each of 8 ends. 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. Horadada just managed to pick up 2 points on day 1. Due to prolonged rain, the afternoon matches on day 2 were cancelled. Day 3, I’m afraid, did not turn out much better for our trips. We only managed 1 win out of 3. However, at least we got to use our waterproofs. Over the 3 days we gained only 4 points. Again the friendliness and sportsmanship was felt throughout the tournament. Thanks goes to Greenlands for hosting the event.

The social side of our club had organised a crazy golf day on the Wednesday but unfortunately the rain put the damper on that! The members who went along for the day thoroughly enjoyed the lunch in Galindo restaurant at La Pueblos with plenty of wine and beer to wash it down.

The crazy golf will be rescheduled for another date.

What a week for San Miguel with great success in the Champion of Champions! Almost all of our competitors reached semi-finals or better. Steve Cantley and Pat McEwan started the wins off on the Saturday beating La Siesta in the Mixed Pairs final. Steve continued his success on Sunday winning the Men’s Pairs with Brian Miller – what a game that was with the result determined by Steve’s last wood -and Mary Dyer won the Ladies Singles beating strong opposition from Benitachell. Val Collier, Chris Collier and Stuart Denholm reached the final of the Triples, but just lost out to Javea. Val, Chris, Stuart and Brian Miller also reached the semifinals of the Rinks and Mary Dyer and Carol Rudge reached the semi-finals of the Ladies Pairs.

So, after all that the Moors game against Emerald Isle Vulcans on Monday was going to be hard work for them. But no, the winning ways continued with the team dropping just 2 points: Brian Miller, Brian Allen, Lin Miller 19:13, Val Collier, Chris Collier, Stuart Denholm 23:8, Noel Davis, Cliff Plaisted, Stuart Hemmings 19:15, Margaret Patterson, Lee Sinclair, Mary Dyer 29:6, Sue Milner, Jim Jarvie, Steve Cantley 23:11. Overall shots 122 to 73.

This result put the Moors top of the Hurricane division, but there

are many weeks to go.

The Christians were away to Quesada this week, always a difficult fixture. They came away with a very creditable 6 points, with shots 92 to 110. Great wins came from Sandie Hannon, Frank Scotthern and Barbara Scotthern 23:9, Ken Hope, Tom Dalgleish and John Marshall 20:14, and Paul Hayward, Keith Further successes came for San Miguel in the Greenlands Open. The semifinals saw 6 San Miguel bowlers in 3 different teams: Lynn Greenland, Dave Johnson, Dave Greenland v Noel Davis with Anne-Marie Stevenson and Drew Gerrard; Fred Willshire, Derek Toozer and Gail Willshire v Gary Thorpe, Carol Thorpe and Mike Regan. After very close semi’s the final was between Drew Gerrard’s team and Fred Willshire’s team and Fred’s team prevailed. Thanks to Greenlands for a great competition.

San Luis Bowls Club After last week's wish for the Champion of Champions tournament; we did have reasonable weather (apart from the gusty winds again) for the weekend semi-finals and finals; but we certainly had excellent bowling. The whole week of the tournament had been great; watching fellow bowlers fight their way to the finals.

Suzi Cooper unfortunately lost her ladies singles semi final to Mary Dyer (SM) who went on to win the final. Mal Hughes had a real "game of two halves" turnaround battle in the men's singles semi-final, to beat Jason Prokopowycz (Q). The final against Richard Lee (ER) was again so close but after a tight measure the title went to Richard.

Greenlands Bowls Club by Dave Webb With the C of C running for the last week there were no matches to report, on Saturday the Roll-up attracted plenty of new and established and bowlers. For the new members it was a chance to meet and make new friends and everyone enjoyed the mornings bowling and banter. Thanks again to Rudy and Jim for organising the roll-up.

In the summer league the Gladiators were at home to Horadada Hawks, but after some close finishes we were unable to clip their wings so the final score was.........Total shots for - 91. Shots against 105. Points for - 4 points against - 10. Winning rinks ..........Dave Field, Rudy Wattley, Skip John Obrien. - 21 shots to 11. and Zoe Wilcock, Terry Powel, Skip Dave Webb. - 21 shots to 12.

The Greenlands Open Mixed Trips competition ran into some very wet weather on the 2nd day which resulted in re-arrangement of the matches in order to complete the final on the allotted day.

After some very entertaining bowling the Spoils went to Fred Wiltshire's team, so well done to them and commiserations to their opponents Drew Gerrard’s team.

Let’s hope we have better luck with the weather next year.

Ruby’s Golf Society @ Vistabella GC Our Trophy game this month was just a short hop down the road to the newly formed Vistabella golf where the greens as usual were tricky, and care had to be taken on the fairways which are a bit sparse and patchy on holes 2 to 8. However the course is now a great challenge but despite being Friday the 13th the challenge was accepted by all and some great scores were recorded, the results are as follows; Nearest the pin on the par threes were David Johnston, Nigel Wright and Martin Collins. Best front nine and also best score for a long time was George Marshall Dean, best back was Theresa Wright. Silver division and overall winner on the day was Buck Taylor, Gold division winner was Martin Collins.

Med Bar Golf Society, El Raso @ Mar Menor After a very windy night the night before, we made our way to Mar Menor with most of us thinking that we might not be able to play as it was still very windy. Surprise of the day was that there was hardly any wind by the time we teed off, sadly as the round progressed the wind appeared (It seemed that the wind had followed us down the motorway) and to a lot of us this meant the course was hard work but never mind, all enjoyed the day out. It was a good day for one member, Andy Trefry as he cleaned up with 4 prizes.

Las Ramblas Social Club Golf Report Monday was the 1st round of the Singles Match Play and the winners have gone through to the 2nd round on Wednesday. Those not involved played a stableford but no results were recorded.

On Wednesday it was the 2nd round of the Singles Match Play and the remaining 8 winners should have been playing the the next round on Friday.

However, due to the rain the matches were not completed and they will be playing catch up Friday and

Meanwhile the rest of the keen golfers braved the rain to manage at least 9/10 holes before it became unpleasant. So no results were recorded apart from 2 X 2´s from Liz Robertson and John Shervell.

Friday was catch up day for the Singles contenders and everybody else played 2 Ball Better Ball with the winning team of Dave Pulling and Rod Doel coming in with a score of 46 pts.

GOLFSIXES, WHICH AIMS to be golf’s answer to cricket’s 20-20, will be held for the 2nd year at the Centurion Club, St. Albans on May 5-6th, and will include women for the first time. European Ryder Cup Captain Thomas Bjorn will partner Solheim Cup Captain Catriona Matthew, and the field will include Georgia Hall and Charley Hull. Shown on Sky Sports, teams from around the world will split into groups of four, before the top two teams from each group progress to quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, the winners receiving £100,000 each. Today we went down to Murcia to the lovely 9 hole course called New Sierra and what a lovely course it is, with the best greens in the area. Unfortunately we picked the wrong day to go as it was blowing a gale all day The only consolation was that we had sunshine and it was a warm day. Out of the 19 members that played we had 5 no returns.

T.M.G.S. escape the rain at Alenda Golf should be played with consideration to all other players on the course or at least that’s how I read the etiquette section of the rule book!

The course was in its usual good condition and nice to see that the tee repairs from last month are now well and truly on their way to full recovery.

The flag positions on some of the greens did however make the approach shots a little tricky and this was probably the reason that no one broke par.

One of our major trophies led us to play the magnificent course at Alicante golf to compete in a Texas scramble despite our early misgivings about the weather, it turned into a warm and sometimes sunny day, and resulted in an extremely hard fought match with 5 teams separated by only 4 stableford points.

Runners up were Bill Stobo , Debbie Jones, Alan Craig and Frank Cullen with 45points on countback ,also with 45 points, were the 3 -ball of Bill England, Colin Yarnton and Garry Garbett and they were presented with the trophy by our Captain Elspeth Craig.

Only two nearest the pins which were won by Tim Ruse and Alan Craig, although it might have been three had the trophy winners remembered to put out

the marker on the 17th green.

Once again, many thanks to opticians Optima Optica for sponsoring the cup.

Also thanks to Helena and Paolo at the La Marina Sports Centre for providing us with sandwiches and pasta after the game.

Our next game is at El Plantio on 10th May at a cost of 45 euros, first tee 10.24.

Of the 36 members scheduled to play a Stableford competition, 34 made the journey in spite of the threat of rain.

As it turns out they were justified as the rain didn´t appear until late in the afternoon when only our last group were still out on the course and had it not been for a couple of our groups playing slowly even they would not have gotten wet!

Slow Play! Probably the worst thing to experience in golf, having to wait to take your shot just seems to kill the pleasure of the game. I would urge all players to consider the players in the following group and give them the opportunity to enjoy their game also, after all the game

The 2´s pot was carried over from last week´s visit to H.D.A. so adding in this week´s subs meant that the 2 lucky winners took away €35 each both making birdies on hole 16, well done to J. Hillier and P. Mahoney. Our only visitor this week was P. Wainwright who managed to score 28 pts to take the visitors prize.

Lambs to the slaughter as Torry lose again D ue to extensive work being carried out on Vicente Garcia stadium, Torry's latest Preferente division encounter against Hercules 'B' was played at Nelson Mandela stadium.

High flying Hercules went 3 up before half time, and it could have been a lot more. Thaddeus opened the scoring on 24 mins, before Piera (44) and Salome (45) extended the visitors advantage just before half time.

There was no let up in the 2nd half, when 2 goals for Piera (57 and 65) gave him a deserved hat trick.

Ref Sanz Martin elected to issue a 2nd yellow card to Greuchi on 74 mins, but the 10 men of Torry did manage to pull a goal back through sub Manuel.

The Plaza Golf Society visit El Valle for the final game of the Season On this very warm spring day the TPGS ventured down to the wilds of El Valle for what was to prove to be a tumultuous final day of the season.

Liz Sully won the overall for the day and the Silver division with 33 pts Chris Baker and Lee Holtham 2nd and 3rd. The Gold division was won by Declan O'Crowley with 31 pts just pipping wee Tony Small on countback with dodgy Darren Hancock coming in 3rd.

The Eclectic which was a culmination of best scores over the season at Villamartin was won by the now familiar name of Liz Sully who romped in with 58 pts, Curly Wilson was 2nd with 54 pts and Gordy Brindley and Lee McWilliamson joint 3rd with 53 pts.

What we are talking about here is a figure of speech where two ideas of a different meaning are combined such as e.g. ‘cruel kindness’.

Getting the idea!

For the purposes I wish to concentrate on an oxymoron, which is a particular favourite of double former major winner Nick Price, namely ‘cautious aggression’.

Would you believe it that even Seve Ballesteros in his pomp displayed this strategy only he applied it in his own way.

For example playing the final hole of the European Open at CransSur-Sierre in 1995 Seve needed to birdie the last hole to tie but as usual had driven deep in the trees.

He looked for what he called his ‘window of opportunity’ or to you and me a gap in the branches and thrashed the ball forward and on to the edge of the green from where he holed the chip but still lost by one shot to Barry Lane.

However he stated afterwards that if the circumstances had arisen earlier in the round he would have chipped out sideways because there was still time and enough holes available to play catch up BUT on the last hole, he had only one chance of winning and went for it.

Returning to Nick Price he believed that this approach is a ‘state of mind’ or ‘attitude’ that you must take onto the course with you.

In his opinion he will not take on a risky or dangerous golf shot unless there is at least a 90% probability of success (for Seve the figure would be nearer 80%).

On the golf course, when faced with the risky shot option there are a number of considerations to be made: The hole you are on.

Your relative position in the tournament.

In matchplay the position of your opponent or the state of the match.

When you have weighed these things up and have made a decision to take a risk, then stand by it through the swing and to the end result, even if this is not good.

After the shot has been played, forget it, good or bad and get ready to

play the next shot and never take two risky options consecutively other wise you may be one of the many golfer uttering the phrase “ if it was not for bad luck I would have no luck at all”.

What a load of rubbish this is, it is all about course strategy and making informed decisions decisively and positively when required.
