As he laid a floral tribute at the makeshift altar, the President of the La Zenia Residents Association, Felix Arenas, mourned at the loss of Kai saying that all we can now do is pay our respects to the youngster, show how much we care and offer our support and solidarity to his family at this difficult time.

His words were sporadic, broken up by the emotions that showed in his voice.

He also said that he prayed "that something like this never happens again and that the Orihuela Costa is provided with the health services it deserves", in reference to the delay in the arrival of the SAMU, which witnesses claimed took 40 minutes to respond.

Representing local government Councillor Sofia Alvarez added her words of condolence saying that “Today is not the day for reproach, but one of tribute to little Kai. Let us all remember him with affection because he was one of our own.”

It was disappointing, however, that she was the only member of the Orihuela government to attend.

There was also representation at the informal ceremony by officers from the Local Police who had been the first members of the security forces to arrive on the scene and offer assistance to the child.

Many of his school friends from Los Dolses, as well as the college headmaster, were visibly affected as they also laid floral tributes, as was the manager of the chirunguitos bar, Ruben, who had been the first person on the scene and the first also to place his flowers, which he did with a genuine outpouring of grief.

It was the efforts of Ruben, and his knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation that kept the child alive during the early minutes, which were vital, until the arrival of the Local Police, the Civil Guard and a doctor from Cabo Roig medical centre.

Unfortunately, having been in a coma induced by the lack of oxygen to the brain, their efforts proved in vain as the child died on Wednesday afternoon at approximately 5pm.

The tragic loss of life of 9-year-old Kai once again reinforced the demand by residents of the coast for the completion of the La Zenia Emergency Centre where last Sunday approximately 60 people demonstrated outside the shell of the abandoned building at a gathering organised by CLARO. In an area that has over 40,000 permanent residents, increasing to around 100,000 during the holiday periods, protestors carried placards and slogans in Spanish, German and English saying “Still no emergency centre”, “Emergency centre WHEN”?

CLARO President Román Jiménez spoke to the protesters on Sunday highlighting the importance of the proposed centre and criticising the Orihuela government for their nine years of delay in its construction.

Although the Director General of Emergencies, José María Ángel Batalla, and the Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, announced in December that the project would be a reality by mid-2019, once work was able to resume, many people in the Orihuela Costa say they have stopped being optimistic and they believe little of what the government promises.

Indeed the councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde, met a week ago with the authorities in Valencia where he was told that the bidding documents were already prepared, something that I recall he had previously claimed last October.

The end of Motorway Tolls? Not Quite! seems that the vote was only a recommendation to central government, which remains responsible for the operation of such roads in Spain as it appears that the Valencian Parliament does not have the authority to make decisions relating to the removal of motorway tolls.

In a statement issued last week, the Ministry of Fomento (Public Works and Development) says that it does not know what it will do with the AP-7, the Mediterranean Highway, once the concession ends, stating that all options still remain open.

The Alicante Deputy Herick Campos said "Road tolls have consequences on the mobility of residents and causes a loss of competitiveness of companies, industry, cooperatives and the tourism sector compared to other communities which operate with free highways," but members of the Hotel Business Association of Benidorm and the Costa Blanca (Hosbec), have said that they want to retain the tolls.

The Hosbec president Antoni Mayor says that the abolition of the toll would cause the "densification of traffic" and a loss of quality in the only road that provides rapid access to the Alicante coast. He says that the motorway is regularly used by French, Swiss, Belgian, Dutch and even British tourists who travel from their countries by car and bus. He insists that if the tolls were removed "The AP-7 would be filled with trucks and heavy vehicles, and in areas such as those between Elche and Murcia, where accidents continually cause 30-kilometer tailbacks, the consequences would be devastating to the economy. As such Hosbec is in favor of the retention of tolls.�

Dozens of activists then descended on toll booths, dismantling the barriers and allowing cars to pass for free.

However the campaign was not in protest at motorway tolls but against the jailing of pro-Catalan independence leaders, many of whom are still being held in custody.

Worker crushed by forklift in Dolores

A 38-year-old man died on Monday after being crushed by a forklift while he was working in a fruit and vegetable company located in Dolores.

Paramedics attended the incident but despite their efforts he was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

The events took place at about 4:00 pm when the forklift truck used to lift pallets and boxes was destabilized and fell on top of the worker. According to municipal sources, the event took place in the Hortofrutícola Tres Puentes, which sells its fruit and vegetables at local auctions.

Colleagues attempted to free the man from under the forklift while the SAMU medics were trying to keep him alive and stabilise his condition but he subsequently died of his injuries.

The local police and agents from the Judicial Police of the Guardia Civil are now carrying out an investigation to try to clarify the causes of this accident.

The deceased is of South American origin and had been residing in Dolores for many years so he was well known by local residents.

Raymond Kearney thanked the council for their work and support to the Irish community, both for the implementation of this initiative and for the assistance that it provides with the organisation of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the area.

Ms Álvarez invited all members of the public "to share in this experience, which will help us to establish Orihuela on the map of Spain, to strengthen our international community and to energize our municipality”.

Spanish Airports say that airlines plan to sell 5.8% more tickets for flights from San Javier airport during the coming months In what may be its last year of commercial activity, prior to the proposed move to Corvera in January 2019, the regional airport has confirmed the upward trend of recent years by announcing the sale of 1,127,752 seats to and from the Murcia airport.

The number of operations will also increase, with a total of 6,240 flights in the next seven months, which is 3.2% more than the same period last year. According to Aena forecasts, San Javier will also increase the number of destinations adding a direct link with Frankfurt that was closed in 2007. Flights to the German city will operate twice a week, on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Another confirmed connection is San Javier-Brussels to Charleroi airport operated by Tui, which also operates a link to the Belgian city of Antwerp. Last summer the route was cancelled, although it did operate during the winter. This year the link will return with summer flights.

Shila remembered on 14th anniversary of her murder

A

lthough they have moved back to Norway the parents of Shila Bigdely, who was murdered 14 years ago last Sunday, will be delighted to know that the memory of their daughter still lives on in Playa Flamenca.

In an event that rocked the Orihuela Costa Shila was sexually assaulted and murdered by Tobias, a school classmate in April 2004. He too was just 14 years of age.

The youth was sentenced to just four years in a detention centre. He is now said to be living a pleasant life on Majorca: driving, drinking in the local bars, dancing in the local discos, sharing meals with his girlfriend.

Until recently the park which was built to Shila’s memory, was marked with a 5 foot high monument bearing her photograph which, according to the deputy mayor, Juan Ignacio López-Bas, was more appropriate to placement in a cemetery rather than a children’s play park, and whilst many people would no doubt agree the manner in which he went about replacing the memorial was controversial to say the least.

There was no communication with either of the parents and neither were local residents consulted about any form of change or replacement. The councillor simply effected the change explaining that it did not comply with the security measures required in children's playgrounds, as it had elements that were unsafe.

The councillor’s decision divided the residents with some in favour whilst many others considered it insulting to Shila’s memory that a cross reminding people of the young Norwegian girl was removed.

However the Department of Infrastructure confirmed that a smaller memorial plate would be placed at the foot of the olive tree which now commemorates the tragic event. And on the 2nd April, exactly 14 years to the day of the murder, the plaque was duly affixed in the small garden at the base of the tree.

Initially Lopez Bas said that he was unable to make contact with the parents but in a statement at the weekend he confirmed that he has now been in touch with Shila’s father by email in which he explained the decision and the reasons for his actions. "The City Council has fulfilled its responsibilities, it has responded to the request of residents in Playa Flamenca and has respectfully preserved the memory of young Shila," said the councillor.

The Orihuela mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, also remembered the girl through social networks: "Today marks the 14th anniversary of the death of the girl Shila Bigdely, who was murdered when she was only 14 years old. In Orihuela Costa we will always remember her and honour her memory in the park that bears her name with this new plaque. Rest in Peace".

Also on Easter Monday, a small group gathered in front of the olive where candles were placed in front of the plaque bearing her name, together with a drawing by Shila sent by her mother. Some lines also prepared by her mother were read out in Norwegian and English. A poem written by her father was also read out.

This simple ceremony, which was carried out with the full agreement of the parents, was criticised by the Deputy Mayor and Citizens Party leader Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas who had the previous memorial removed.

Many people believe that he was trying to get away with the removal of the previous memorial but when confronted with the public reaction, he came up with the plan to plant an olive tree and place a plaque bearing Shila’s name in front of the tree.

However, politics apart, it is fitting that the tragic death of this little girl be remembered permanently in Orihuela Costa where people of so many different nationalities and cultures seek to live together.

Samaritans in Spain (SiS) – A special message from the Listening Team Many of you will have heard and know of the work that the Samaritans UK do in the United Kingdom, perhaps less of you reading this article will know that we have a similar organisation running in Spain –SAMARITANS IN SPAIN is a registered national charity operating under licence from Samaritans UK offering a confidential, non-judgmental emotional support service in English for those in distress.

The Spanish organisation is financed entirely by fundraising by the good people of the area, kind donations from individuals / organisations and monies generated by the charity shop at the Centro Commercial Punta Marina, Punta Prima. (Just off the Punta Prima roundabout on the N332). The charity shop is always grateful to receive good quality second hand clothing and bric-a-brac. If you have such items that you no longer need then please drop them off at the shop or the drop in centre next door. Regretfully we cannot take large items of furniture. We also always need shop volunteers.

The SiS is undergoing a rapid period of change from a small local charity (formerly Costa Blanca Samaritans) to a larger nationwide organisation which supports the whole of the English-speaking community in Spain of any nationality. The call rate has increased fourfold in the last few years and expansion is constant. As such we are currently looking to increase our pool of volunteers who manage the charity, listen on the phones, answer emails, volunteer in the shop, help with our awareness campaign etc. We always need people from the top to the bottom of the organisation, and if you have professional experience working in field such as financial management, HR, service delivery, income generation, we would be glad to hear from you as a potential Trustee Board Member. If you would be able to offer a few hours of your time manning the phones in our drop- in centre that would also be greatly received.

Those volunteers who answer the phones are the key to our organisation, without these there would be no services to the English community in Spain. Volunteers normally live within one hours travel of Punta Prima and have a caring, able to listen, empathic personality, nearly everybody who thinks they may be able to do it, can! A short course of training must be undertaken to ensure that you are able to offer the service that our callers need, and show the integrity and confidentiality personalities required. This normally takes about five working days and then you are assigned to a mentor for a further few weeks to ensure that you have gained the required confidence to take

On Friday 13 April, from 10.30am to 1.30pm, Happy Animales is organising a flea market and raffle at Restaurant Wolfies Bar in Blue Lagoon.

All the money they raise will be donated to the sanctuary in order to pay for the cost of supporting the 85 animals with food, hay, rent, water, repairs, blacksmith and vet bills.

Come along, may be you find a bargain and you will help the animals at the same time!

Finca Villamartin, (before Finca San Miguel de Salinas) is supported by nonprofit charity, Happy Animales. The founder is Mona Nowak.

It currently looks after the welfare of 13 horses, 4 pigs, 9 goats, 13 geese, 27 cats, Donald and Daisy Duck, chickens, 2 ferrets, 2 dogs which need to be fed every day.

In February the charity rescued another horse and a goat, Biggi.

The goat is now settled in a pen with the other 8 goats seems to have taken

over!

The white horse, named after Mona, is still not walking very well because her hooves were so long, the blacksmith has already paid her two visits.

So if you would like to help the charity to raise money, so that they can continue to take care of all their abandoned animals, please do go along!

They also organise an Open Day on every last Saturday of the month, the next one will be on Saturday 28 April from 1-5pm Long term sponsors, food sponsors, cake makers, volunteers and raffle prizes are all very welcome.

We at SAMARITANS IN SPAIN believe that Samaritans fundraisers at an event last year everyone has the right to make fundamental decisions about their own life, including the decision to die by suicide.

Your training will teach you to deal with all calls including the possible suicidal caller with the same empathic ear, to listen and to avoid giving advice. It will leave you with the confidence and skills to deal with all types of calls that come into the call centre.

All volunteers have full ongoing support after the training and mentoring periods are finish by our in house volunteer support team. At any time during the training you feel like you wish to reconsider, then this is fine, a pause or to finish completely is Ok if that is your wish.

A Candle Light tribute to Kai

hocolate, Avocado Eggs and Spain

The Spanish love their chocolate. Pastries are dipped into it, biscuits are coated with it, churros are drowned in it and anything else is sprinkled with it. Chocolate is everywhere in Spain, which is not surprising, because it was the Spanish who discovered and gave birth to modern chocolate.

It was Spanish explorers who brought chocolate to Europe more than 500 years ago with the addition of sugar to a bitter cocoa drink transforming it into the chocolate delight that we know today. Indeed, it was Christopher Columbus who may be credited for being the first European explorer to encounter chocolate. It is said that Columbus intercepted a trading ship loaded with cocoa beans during one of his voyages, but thinking they were almonds he ignored the precious load.

The next step in the journey of chocolate was left to the explorer, Hernán Cortés, who may be credited for being the first European to bring chocolate to Europe. Cortés was mistaken for a God, and invited to a generous Aztec feast where he was given their prized, spicy drink of warm chocolate. Cortés was no fool, and the capitalist that he was led him to realise its value to both himself and the Spanish Crown.

The knowledge of how to turn cocoa beans into a delicious frothy drink was more a mystery that was jealously guarded by the Aztecs.

It was left to Cistercian monks to get hold of and adapt the recipe that would produce chocolate for the Spanish nobility. They managed to keep their secret away from the rest of Europe for more than a century after its discovery.

Over the years, the recipe was modified to suit the European palette, which came in the form of cutting out the fiery hot peppers that the Aztecs traditionally used, replacing it with sugar cane from the

Canary Islands to create the sweet chocolate that eventually became a worldwide sensation. It was decades later that a British company, founded by Joseph Fry, created the first ever chocolate bar that delivered chocolate and excess calories to the masses.

Eggs, which apparently are going down a treat.

Recent shocking statistics screaming from some of the headlines this week accused Brits of eating more chocolate than anyone else in the world. Apparently, Brits munched their way through 8.4kg of chocolate each during 2017. Many commentators are suggesting that the increase in chocolate consumption is due to Brexit, with nasty rumours floating around that the price of chocolate bars will suddenly wildly increase following Brexit.

Despite these interesting statistics, I was surprised to see Spain not heading towards the top of the chocoholics list. For many Spanish, there is nothing more delicious to start the day than a steaming bowl of hot chocolate in which to dip a plateful of delicious churros, which is fried choux pastry (a little like a donut that has been stretched out of all recognition). It is a highly fattening, but delicious combination, I am told.

Some Brexiters are wickedly claiming that it is the fault of Remainers, who are so depressed about severing their links with the chocolate makers of Europe, that they are putting away as much as they possibly can before Brexit takes place. In response, Remainers are claiming that increased consumption is due to Brexiters who are so nervous about the implications of Brexit, that they are anxiously eating their way through the nation’s chocolate bars before it is too late. It is also said that they have a longing for European chocolate, which they wish to keep secret.

Personally, I am very keen to get my hands on one of the new vegan avocado chocolate bars that went on sale in Europe recently. The avocado used in these chocolate bars is 100 per cent natural freezedried avocado, and I am reliably informed that the delicious blend of avocado and organic dark chocolate is a chocolate lover’s dream.

Sadly, it seems that since the takeover of Cadburys by an American company, British chocolate just doesn’t satisfy British taste buds any more. Some of the blame for increased chocolate consumption is also being passed onto the current trend for alcohol flavoured Easter

Personally, I am not too sure about gin and tonic flavoured eggs, but I am sure that readers will tell me how wonderful they are very shortly

Interestingly, this product has been brought to the world by James Cadbury, who is the great, great, great grandson of Cadbury’s founder. n Friday, 30th March, local Freemasons of Caledonia Lodge held a very successful Easter Bonnet competition at the La Cosheca restaurant in Benijofar and was very well attended by both Masons and guests. As well as a delicious dinner the guests were royally entertained by cabaret act Marie O'Hara who, by general consent, was excellent.

There was also a grand raffle in aid of local charities which raised three hundred euros.

A week earlier saw the Brethren of Logia de las Salinas gathering at the Hotel Masa Torrevieja, with their Ladies, Guests and members of Other Lodges to celebrate their ‘Ladies Gala Dinner Night’.

The President for the evening, Worshipful Brother Norman Barrall and His Lady, Carol, were introduced by Worshipful Brother Clifford Gingell Director of Ceremonies of the Lodge, who (by special request) as a ‘Professional Toast Master and Master of Ceremonies’ came out of retirement and donned his red Toast Master rig for one evening only.

The proceeds of the evening’s raffle, which raised seven hundred and seventy-five Euros, will be donated to ‘The Butterfly Children - Debra’ the Masters chosen charity for the year.

Easter Monday saw 30 members of HELP Murcia Mar Menor and friends enjoy a menu de diá at the Aqualinas Restaurant in San Pedro. After a great meal some of the ladies paraded around the restaurant displaying their Easter bonnets much to the delight of all the diners both English and Spanish.

The winner was long time HELP member Tricia Brister on the right with Dianne Daniels coming second. Guest Jim Branningam won the day for the men being the only man brave enough to enter.

The hat contest was followed by a Grand Raffle of twenty prizes, the top prize a basket of Easter goodies was won by Megan Johnston.

This event was held by the HELP Friendship Group and there will be events every month during the year for both HELP members and Non members, all are welcome.

Members of Campoverde Theatre group attended the charity day at the Emerald Isle on Monday 2nd April where they presented a cheque for 500 euros to the Tasha Appeal.

This makes a total of 700 euros that the group has donated to the appeal to send Tasha to America, raised this from their last show ‘Taking the P out of panto’ held in March at the Fiesta Plaza .

The group are now well into rehearsals for their next show in September and hopefully will continue to raise even more money for the charity's they support.

EURONICS THURSDAY DART LEAGUE “THE ELECTRICAL SHOP” - BLUE LAGOON MATCH RESULTS FOR 5TH APRIL 2018 Ladies Singles Competition Results: Semi-finalists: Hennie Oortwijn (Hen’s Teeth), Debbie Wright (Pint Depot Queens. Runner up: Pat Schofield (Junction Jaguars) Winner: Michelle ‘Mummy’ Lane (Porter House Bees) Quarter Finals: A hard match started us off with Patty Poo Schofield (last year’s champ) facing the winner from the previous season, Yvonne Rouffignac.

Brilliant darts from both ladies showed why they had both held the title in previous years. Pat’s lowest score before her two-dart out (S8-D4) was 53! She meant business and threw 68, 60, 66, 70, 81, 84, 66 in the first leg whilst Yvonne held up her own with 60, 66, 60.

In the 2nd leg, both ladies were scoring well again, Roofie with 85, 60, 75, 62 but Pat just edged it again with 90, 70, 140 and checked out on D11. It was all over in a flash!

Up next was Jaguar Simone (81) verses Hen’s Teeth Henni. Henni scored well (88, 81,91 -D3) to give her a 1 leg advantage and then took the 2nd leg 89, 57, 59 D4 to Simone’s 114, 73. Then it was the turn of their royal highnesses Queen Debbie Wright v Marie Cummins, unlucky to get drawn against each other, even though it assured that a Queen would reach the semi’s.

Debbie took the first leg 78, 77, 64 and D7 with Marie countering with a score of 98. Marie opened the 2nd leg with a massive score of 140 and went on to win it on D2. In the decider leg, she scored 66, 81 but QD had an answer to that with 74, 60, 77, 70 and D10.

The final game of the quarters was between Sonya Cooper and Michelle Lane. Again great scoring from both ladies Sonya;- 60 x2, 81, 100 in the 1st leg and a 75 in the second and Michelle popping in 82, 73, 60 D9 then 85, 121 D1 to secure her place in the Semi’s.

Semi-finals: Patty Poo showed cool, calm determination all the way through her match against Henni. She won the first leg with 66, 85

Debbie and Michelle both deserved to get through to the finals but obviously there could only be one winner. They were both on form, Debbie with scores of 65 x2, 98 in the first leg and 95, 124, 71 in the second and Mummy Lane’s 64, 60, D12 took leg one. She scored 81, 96, 70 and a two-darter S16-D20 to give her the 2nd and 87, 100, D5 to see her into the finals.

Finals: It looked to be going Pat’s way when she won the first leg 81, 66 D1 but Shellie Lane wasn’t rolling over to let her take the next. With darts flying left, right and centre at the speed of a Gatling gun, she took leg two, 58, 62, 94 D4. A pair of 71’s and D12 got her the 3rd leg to Pat’s 85, 83. Starting to get a little rattle, Pat rallied with 140, 85 in leg 4 but Michelle was unstoppable now with 65, 60, 81, 90, 105 and D3. Tasting victory, Michelle won the last leg and the tournament in fine style with 85, 70, 100, D5 despite a trio of 80+’s from the Poomeister.

Thank you to all the volunteer chalkers and to the Tavern for the scrummy chilly, rice and chips for the players and a good turn-out of supporters from all the players’ teams.

Men’s Singles Competition Results: Semi-finalists:- Lee Maiden (Junction Jackals); John Lane (Porter House Bees. Runner up: - John Eyre (Hub Hyenas) Winner: graham Solomon (Tavern) This week saw the 2018 men’s singles competition take place at Chemie’s Lounge in Villamartin - a great venue much appreciated by players and spectators alike. Unfortunately, only 5 of the qualifiers were available on the night and perhaps the league needs to think of a way of making up the numbers in such circumstances.

So we were quickly on to the first of the semis – best of five, 501 legs - where Lee maiden (The Junction) faced reigning champ Graham Solomon (The Tavern). The match got off to a good start with Graham posting a 140 and Lee hitting some steady 60’s and 80’s. However, it was Graham’s finishing that took him into a 2 – 0.

Lee needed to hit back and hit back he did in spectacular fashion. An early 123 took him into the lead and a little later with 182 to score he only needed 4 darts to finish – T20, T20, T10 for 150 and D16 next go. Unfortunately for Lee he couldn’t maintain that form and Graham took the fourth leg to progress to the final.

The competition was as fierce as ever with some good, steady scoring and some outstanding finishing. John Eyre (The Hub) and Chris Montes (las Rosas) were first to the oche in a preliminary play off to reduce the numbers to 4 semi-finalists. CarpR-Us Round 7 of the Carp-R-Us Spring Series was fished on the Rio Segura in Murcia City Centre.

Clear winner was Alan Smith with 12.62kg caught method feeder and a banded wafter, second was Dave Hoare with 6.46kg of mainly bleak and a couple of carp all caught on the whip, third was Dave Sutton with 6.44kg and fourth was Andy Foden with 3.16kg.

Men’s Singles winner, Graham Solomons and Runner-up, John Eyre

In the other Semi, John Eyre took on John Lane (Porterhouse B’s).

Again the scoring was not spectacular and John Eyre took a close first leg on double 1. The next two legs were notable mainly for two three dart finishes by John Eyre – leg 2 saw him hit T18 to leave 16, single 8 and D4 finished the job – in leg 3 he needed 111 – T20 ,19 , D16 – match over 3- 0.

The final was best of 7 legs and John Eyre was quickly at it again – having taken the first leg with D20 he then posted a 140 and polished off 68 – 20, 16, D16 – leaving Graham a bit shell shocked.

The man from the Tavern wasn’t fazed and proceeded to take the next two legs with some solid play. So we were nicely poised and all to play for. Leg 5 got off to a good start for Graham with a 140 that took him into the lead but John was having none of it – he produced yet another 3 dart finish – 114 this time – 20, T18, D20.

Two legs left and Graham need them both – John only 1. Neither player seemed to be able to up his game for the final push although John hit 125 and 140 to keep the pressure on. Both of them had several chances at a double in what was a nervy ending but It was Graham who took both legs to retain his title.

As true “Brits” the weather is often a main topic of conversation. Once more, weather and external conditions have affected our matches; we’re still suffering from “mad March winds” though no real “April” showers yet! Just as we start to put away the thermals and get out the cut-offs/shorts, the temperatures drop again. Hopefully conditions will be more settled for the Champion of Champions Tournament hosted by San Luis (first 2 days) & Quesada (all 7 days) from 16th to 22nd April.

Wednesday 4th VCL: SL Falcons home v Vistabella Vikings, had a great result; 12-0, shots 99-65. Winners: Singles – Kath Reid 21-14 & Keith Jones 21-16, Pairs - Jan & Brian Pocock 17-16, Triples - Shirley Verity, Jo & Jules Pering 16-11, Rinks - Ann Holland, William Holtham, Neil Morrison, Ian Kenyon 24-10.

SL Hawks away v Quesada Cheetahs had a good result; 10-2, 100 shots-66.

The match was set at 5:30/6:00 which unfortunately had the disadvantage of the disappearing light.

By the time we reached the 17th end trying to complete the triples match (just before 9:00pm) we couldn’t see the jack, the bowls or the players at the opposite end of the rink!! Fortunately our singles players & pairs finished sooner with some light! Winners: Singles – Ros Holmes 21-6 & Bill Webb 21-11, Pairs - Sally Cordell & Les Bedford 21-17, Triples - Dennis Jackson, Sheila Cammack, Charlie Marigold 25-11.

Friday 6th VCL: SL Hawks home v San Miguel Marshalls; no problem with the light today but the strong gusty winds caused problems for all the players.

Even so, the Hawks worked hard and every team pulled back shots in the last few ends.

Our singles players both managed to overcome the conditions and their opposition well, also the triples fought back to snatch the win and the pairs fought back just missing by 1 shot, even our losing rink took 3 shots on the last end to cut back the deficit. Points 8-4, shots 90-77. Winners: Singles - Irene Everett 21-11 & Derrick Cooper 21-12, Triples - Chris Jackson, Ian Ross, Barry Edwards 17-15.

Once again only one match to report on this week. The lull before the storm as next week the South Alicante Hurricane division starts and the following week is the start of the Champion of Champions.

Our second match in the VCL League was played on Wednesday at home in lovely sunny weather against Monte Mar Lords. We had a fantastic result with 108 shots to Monte Mar’s 49 giving us a maximum of 12 points. Three rinks were good wins – the Ladies and Gents Singles and the Pairs.

The Triples and the Rinks were closely fought throughout but we managed to pull ahead in the last couple of ends in both. The results are as follows: Ladies Singles – Linda Heir 21 – 10, Gents Singles – John Jukes 21 – 7 Pairs – Wayne Osguthorpe and Jeff Heir 31 - 6, Triples – Carol Linehan, Jack Linehan and Alan Miller 21 -15, Rinks – Irene Graham, Roy Thomson, Bryan Eatough and Terry Hucknall 14 – 11 Well done to all our players. That was as great result. The next match is also at home so let’s do the same again and get us off to a good start in the Hurricane division.

In the VCL League all San Miguel teams lost 8-4 !!! The DEPUTIES were at home against Greenlands Jasmine with Jim Jarvie, Dave Champion, Alan Campbell winning 20-15; and the rinks Stan North, Tom Dalgleish, Alan Dobie, Bob Donnelly winning 18-15. Total shots were 74 to San Miguel and 95 to Greenlands.

The SHERIFFS were away to Vistabella Saxons with pairs team of Gail Willshire, Lynn Greenland winning their second game of the season 18-16; and the rinks team Margaret Patterson, Dave Johnson, Steve Cantley, Stuart Denholm winning 17-12. Shots were 77 to San Miguel and 83 to Vistabella.

The MARSHALLS were at home to Emerald Isle Earls with ladies singles won by Ann Eagle 31-10 and pairs Sheila and Brian Errington having a close game winning 16-15. Some very close games - Well done to all.

Swallows win another trophy for Quesada Bowls Club

Having won the Southern Lge division ‘A’ for the second time in succession, the Swallows travelled to Bonalba B.C. on Monday 2nd April to take on their opponents, Benitachell Lions, in the North v South play-off.

The Swallows had a spectacular result, winning 4 rinks to 1, to retain the coveted trophy.

From the word “go” the game was leaning Quesada’s way with some extremely excellent bowling from both teams.

Well done to all, and a big thank you to Bonalba B.C. for their hospitality.

Quesada were well supported by ardent members, who took the north bound trip to spur on their club.

Greenlands Bowls Club with Dave Webb Our second game of the VCL League found us at San Miguel where we achieved a good result away from home. Final score was as follows - total shots for - 95. shots against - 74. Points for - 8. points against - 4. Winning rinks were - Ladies singles - Sheila Stead - 21 shots to 6. Mens singles - John Obrien - 21 shots to 19. Pairs - Brian Tomlin and Dave Webb - 23 shots to 11.

Country welcome for La Marina in VCL with Jo Richardson We had a beautiful bright morning on Sunday for our ‘fun day’ Easter competition. Our winners were Karen Kirk in the ladies section and joint winners in the men’s section were Dennis Birkett & Adam James. Well done.

The Easter bonnets were amazing and the winner of the best went to Pat Emmett with her prize being presented by Anna Garry. 2nd prize went to Dot Davies.

Country Bowls Club entertained La Marina on Wednesday on a sunny but windy day, the wind made bowling a little tricky.

La Marina started well and by half way were ahead in both the singles and pairs but Country Bowls had the advantage on the rinks and trips. The second half was a different tale, although Country Bowls were dominant in the trips and the men’s singles came with a strong finish, La Marina came through in the ladies singles and overcame the pairs. The rinks were even with two ends remaining but fell at the 17th and lost by 6.

A friendly but competitive game was eventually won by La Marina with a score of 8 – 4.

On Monday we played the Counters Game again and the winning team with a score of 93 were Nigel Price, Nora Betts, Rachel Leckey and Peter Wickham.

Wednesday was our Pairs Trophy and with a good score of 46 pts the winners were Bryan Neal and John Dobson, 2nd were John Collins and Rachel Leckey 42 pts. And 3rd Peter Wickham and Ellen Drakesmith 41 pts.

On Friday we had a 2 Ball Better Ball and the winning team with a score of 45 were Reg Akehurst and Nick Campbell. 2nd were Dave Pulling and Marleen Billen 44 pts.

The forecast looked good and again there seemed to be little wind making the conditions perfect for scoring, well for one person in particular namely Captain John Eyre who by his own admission likes the course, well he would say that wouldn´t he, having scored 40 points which just happened to be the best score of the day.

The course was in good condition even allowing for some very heavy traffic in recent weeks. However the greens proved to be difficult to find and once found even more difficult to read hence there were only 2 N.T.P. ´s won on the par 3´s and no one managed to make a 2, so the €37 Winners of the will be rolled over to our next game at La Marquesa, Silver Category which also happens to be Captain´s day.

Withdrawal enforces last minute changes for El Plantio 2 Due to a withdrawal, the planned competition on 3rd April was changed from a 3-man Joker to a 2-man Texas Scramble.

Each pairing had to use 6 of their drives with the remaining 6 shots open to the best shot. 14 members competed with the two Bri(y)ans achieving a magnificent 6 birdies in their round - 4 in succession.

However, a total of 4 double bogies meant that they only finished third. The winners managed 2 birdies but had only 2 bogies meaning that they finished nearly 4 shots in front of second place.

Late tee time makes it a long day for Ruby’s GS at Altorreal Lo Crispin GS at Marquesa

The Society played its first ever competition at La Marquesa, which is perhaps a little surprising, in view of the relatively short distance between Lo Crispin and the course. Following a couple of last minute withdrawals 29 members commenced a 2 tee start at 9. 38. a. m to compete in an individual stableford competition. The weather was good and remained so throughout the day. A number of members remarked on the poor state of some of the fairways and the inconsistency of the greens. Nevertheless, as usual most members seemed to enjoy the day.

The prize presentations and after game Tapas occurred as usual at the Lo Crispin Tavern and the following were the prize recipients: Gold Division: 1st. Place - Dicky Claeys - 29 pts. off 8 2nd. Place - Brian Coultate - 27 pts. off 16(on 'count back') 3rd. Place - Gordon Cobb - 27pts. off 18 Silver Division: 1st. Place - Scott Blair - 31 pts. off 28 2nd. Place - Barney Barningham - 28 pts. 21(on 'count back') 3rd. Place - Janet Candlin - 28pts. off 33 NTP's: Hole 5 - Ray Moles, Hole 11 - Harry Wilcock, Hole 15 - Karl Spendel, Hole 17 - Barney Barningham The 2's pot was won by John Dunnion, the only player who achieved a 2 on the day. The free game raffle was won by Geoff Dowsett.

This months Trophy game took 23 members down to Altorreal where we had a late tee time due to an alteration by the club to fit in a club competition.

We were expecting a long round and it did not disappoint as we came in 5 and a half hours later very cold, as the wind got stronger as the day went on, however, there were some very good scores recorded and everyone enjoyed themselves.

The results were as follows, nearest the pin on the par threes were Bill Peters, Andrew Evans Helen Bailey and Nigel Wright. Best front nine Bill Peters and best back Bill Malcolm, Gold Division winner was Nigel Wright and Silver division and

overall winner with 39 points was Theresa Wright. The two's pot was shared between Andrew Evans and Bill Peters.

Back at Rayz bar where we enjoyed a nice buffet the vice-captain tried something a little different by putting up a couple of prizes for a raffle, a leg of lamb and a turkey crown these were won by Nigel Wright and Jim McCarthy respectively, the football card was won by Monica Malcolm. A great day, great camaraderie and also a bit of fun enjoyed by all.

San Miguel Golf Society at Alenda - 4 April Warm sunshine but a very blustery wind welcomed members to Alenda golf course. The end of “pick and play” meant a return to “real golf”, that is, golfers occasionally playing from bare lies or divots on the fairways. Greens where, as always, in great nick.

Given the conditions, it was no surprise that scoring was on the low side. John Osborne being the only one to tame the course with a creditable 37 points. As the overall winner of the Presidents Trophy Round 2 he received a polo shirt, kindly sponsored by MoneyCorp and presented by Andrew Shaw.

There were three singles matchplay games. Norman Padmore beat Darren Hancock 2&1 only to be later disqualified under breach of rule 6.2. A hard pill to swallow but taken honourably. Phil De Lacy beat Steve Higgins at the 2nd extra hole, and Kyrre Skarsmoen beat Mike Jordan by 2 holes.

Mike ProBert talks golf Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and residentS alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions.

DAILY GOLF LICENCE Anyone who has played golf in Spain will know that if you're are not a member of the Spanish Golf Federation (at a cost of circa €80 per year) you will asked to pay a daily licence at each golf course before you are allowed to play at a cost of €1.5 in the Valencian region and €3 in the Murcian region.

This is a legal requirement covered by a Royal Spanish decree and as such must be paid BUT in most cases golfers refer to it as an insurance payment which is incorrect.

Only part of the daily licence fee is for insurance and the balance is to help fund and run the Regional Golf Federation although just why the cost in the Murcian region is double that of the Valencian region is beyond understanding and many players just consider this another form of tax or profiteering.

Many golfers also consider that paying the daily licence fee gives them insurance against any eventuality and this is just not the case.

One of the local golf societies for whom I book had an incident of an established and well known course in Murcia when a lady player was hit by a stray golf ball. Fortunately there were no serious injuries although the shaft of her club was broken by the ball on impact.

On returning to the clubhouse she tried to claim against the daily licence insurance only to be told that damage to golf equipment was not covered and subsequent discussions with the course revealed that it is not exactly clear what is covered.

As a broad brush you can consider that only damage to properties and personal injury are covered BUT I recommend that every golfer must check for themselves exactly what insurance cover that they have with a golf course when paying on the day.

check what cover they get for their €80 per year with the phrase Caveat Emptor (buyer beware) coming to mind.

Captain Dave Farrington and Vice Captain Ty Williams We had a great turnout and perfect weather for the start of new Captain Dave Farrington’s tenure. Ably assisted by new vice-captain Ty Williams, Dave made sure the event ran smoothly and a great afternoon of golf was enjoyed by all.

El Valle was in superb condition but only one person played below their handicap - fittingly that was our new captain! The winners were in Division 1: First was David Archer with 33 points, second Paul Newman with 30 and third was Les Whall with 28. In Division 2: First came new captain Dave Farrington with 41 points, second Tony Mann with 33 and third Mick Hardy with 31. In Division 3: First Shaun Devine with 34, second Jeff Belt with 30 and third Joyce Armstrong with 25.

Nearest the pins were won by Mick Hardy, Paul Matthews, Ian Lawley and Les Whall. The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was not won and will roll over to our next game. So near yet so far as Torry finish with 9 men A lthough Torry had recruited 3 new signings since last weeks debacle when their match was abandoned, unfortunately more players have left through the exit door. New signings Maicol, Ulises and Cristobel (keeper, but required to play in a wide role up front), made their debuts at rock bottom club Petrelense.

There were 100 fans inside the tiny El Barxell Stadium, where the hosts had failed to score, let alone win, for many a week.

Once again, Torry were forced to field only 10 players, leaving manager Pedreño as the sole occupant of the visitors bench. But unlike the previous match, Torry gave their all, but alas fatigue took its toll in the dying minutes, denying them a share of the spoils they so richly deserved.

As you would expect, the extra man advantage from the outset was a huge physiological advantage for the hosts. Torry keeper Chus had to make no less than 7 important saves during a first half, in which the hosts failed to end their bleak scoring record. The 2nd half started in the same fashion, Chus saving point blank before the deflection hit a post.

Following an altercation (punch up) with the assistant manager of Petrelense, Josu was shown a straight red card, leaving Torry to complete the match with only 9 men.

So the bleak run continues, but more to the point is the total lack of information coming out of the club, especially from directors who seem to completely disregard the power of media. Next Sunday, 15 April ko 5pm, Torry take on top of the table Jove Español, at Vicente Garcia Stadium, hoping to show the fans more of the same, achieved in the win at Jove Español earlier in the season.

The game played at the Vicente Garcia in November saw Torry win 2-0.

Vega Baja Premier Golf League Ivie Davies Perpetual Memorial Trophy This was the final game of the 2017-18 season which was played at Vistabella. The majority of the players had not played the new 7 holes so it was an experience for them with some good comments, We had the presentation to the winners and runners up of the Vega Baja League after the game and meal in the club house. Thanks go to the Vistabella staff and the Club restaurant.

The winner of the League was Club 25 Golf and the Coys Rental Cars trophy and Replica was presented by Ron Nicholson Secretary 0f the League to Captain Roy Baker Runner up was La Manga RGA who received the Claret Jug. The team that was First on the day was La Manga RGA and the Ivie Davies Trophy was presented by Diana Davies the wife of the late Secretary to the team Captain.

Seven mins later, Josu should have doubled the lead, but when through on goal, he slammed his shot against the post. It took an inspired substitution by the hosts to turn the game on its head. On 85 mins, Joshua (who had been on the park only 20 mins) headed into an open net, then 3 mins later, the same player tucked the ball away at the far post from a headed assist.

Lucy helps England to Silver

Rojales honor for Ángel Jiménez Miguel Ángel Jiménez has been coming to Rojales for over 26 years where he not only spends his summer holiday but has also promoted the sport of golf by establishing both a charity tournament and youth coaching at the local La Marquesa course.

In the town hall on Saturday the commitment that Jiménez has provided to the town was finally honoured with the award of ‘Adopted Son’, an honour that he said he received "with great pride".

The mayor said that the townsfolk wanted to thank the golfer for the invaluable work that he has carried out in spreading the name of Rojales across the country.

The presence of Miguel Ángel Jiménez first began in Rojales began more than a quarter of a century ago when he chose the town to relax and to practise for tournaments. In 2000 the golfer suggested

BY ANDREW ATKINSON The grandparents of England gymnastics star Lucy Stanhope are celebrating after England's gymnasts won women's team silver at the Commonwealth Games in Australia.

“It is a great result winning silver for ‘our Lucy’ in the team event,” delighted grandparent George Stanhope from Los Montesinos, Alicante, Exclusively told The Leader.

The English team comprising Georgia-Mae Fenton, Lucy Stanhope, Alice Kinsella, Kelly Simm and Taeja James - posted a total score of 162.650 to finish second.

Canada won with a total score of 163.075, with Australia taking bronze. Wales finished fourth, with Scotland finishing fifth.

Lucy, 16, replaced late withdrawal Claudia Fragapane at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast in Australia.

Liverpool Gymnastics Club star Lucy was named in the England 2018 Commonwealth Games having participated in the European Championships, Commonwealth Games and European Youth Olympic Festival.

Lucy was the 2014 British Espoir Beam Champion, and represented Team GB at the 2015 European Youth Olympic Festival in Tbilisi.

Lucy’s silver medal is added to that of winning an English Championships title, international debut gold with Team GB at the Rushmoor Rose Bowl Invitational, and Team GB gold at the Olympic Hopes Cup. “I am proud to be competing for Team England at the Commonwealth Games in Australia,” said Lucy.

“We are very proud of Lucy,” grandma Brenda Stanhope told The Leader.

that the Rojales golf course introduced the Pro-Am La Marquesa tournament, a charity tournament, which since 2016 has become a Pro-Am as a memorial to Justo Quesada and Josefina, whose fundraising continues to support three local associations. He also launched the Youth Golf Circuit, which now bears his name, and which promotes the Golf Club and Rojales in golf circles throughout Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

Jiménez is one of the most successful golfers on the national scene. He has won more than 20 professional tournaments, including the 2014 Spanish Open and has won four Ryder Cups, one as vicecaptain of the European team.

The councillor for Sport in the municipality, Pedro Llopis, said that he is truly an inspirational figure who always promotes the town and his sport in a professional and selfless way.
