Women’s Day. The figures were provided by ten of the country’s top unions who joined in the strike, which was also supported by a large number of female politicians.

Women were to be found marching through the streets of many major city’s, including Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Valencia and even Torrevieja and Orihuela, where they joined together in chanting "If we stop, the world stops".

Indeed in Barcelona police were called out to restore order in the city after protesters blocked many of the main roads.

A poll of 1,500 people that was carried out by the El Pais daily newspaper suggested that 82% of the population supported the strike, while 76% thought that women in Spain had harder lives than men.

The organisation in Spain had the backing of most trade unions. Ten unions called for a 24-hour strike, while others called for two-hour work stoppages.

Service on Madrid’s metro system was significantly disrupted after the Transport Ministry announced that 300 trains would not be operating. Renfe, the national railways company, cancelled more than 100 long-distance trains because of the strike.

However the ruling Partido Popular said that events were aimed only at feminist elites and did not represent the wishes of the average working woman.

Two of Spain’s most powerful women disagreed, Manuela Carmena and Ada Colau, the mayors of Madrid and Barcelona respectively, said that they were also backing the strike, refuting claims made by the Government which they described as nonsense.

Locally there were more than 200 women that joined with the call of different feminist groups of the Vega Baja to gather in the Plaza del Carmen de Orihuela, next to the city town hall. Demonstrators displayed a variety of banners as they read out a statement claiming "there is still a lot that remains to be achieved this year, because of the situation of violence, marginalization and invisibility with which women are treated. We have to strike in order

to highlight the fact that the contribution we make to the maintenance of life, needs to be valued and considered".

A number of men also took part in the rally, most of them quite young, because they wanted to show that they support women as they strive for gender equality and protest against the discrimination that they suffer in the labour market and social framework.

In the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in Torrevieja the Councilor for Equality, Fabiana Ibarra, was joined in reading a statement emphasising the rights of women by a representative of Workers' Commissions, Juan Antonio Moya, while the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, highlighted the importance of the rally saying “Today is a day of no return and many people, women and men, have decided that they cannot continue in a world that is so unequal, and where the sex of a person is discriminated against".

Meanwhile in Elche the call was heeded by over 300 women including a majority of the town council and approximately 50% of its staff, who were also joined at the demonstration by the mayor, Carlos González.

Te final march was in Orihuela city on Thursday evening where the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, and the Councillor for Equality, Sabina-Goretti Galindo, joined the protest organised by the Bureau of Equality, which toured the city streets in commemoration of International Women's Day. The march ended at the Glorieta Gabriel Miró where a statement was read out by Juana Aznar, vice-dean of the Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences in Orihuela. "This year, International Women's Day joins an unprecedented global movement for women's rights, equality and justice. Now is the time, "said Aznar in his announcement.

A huge thankyou from Age Concern Maureen Payne, President of Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur, recently attended a meeting of the ADAPT Association in Lo Pagan.

This Association has two simple aims, the well-being of English speaking members and the integration of members, through the Association, into the wider Spanish Community.

Maureen gracefully accepted a cheque for 500 euro from Reme Ruiz, President of ADAPT. Maureen said afterwards that this generous donation will go a long way to maintaining services the Charity provides for the support and welfare of people of over 50 years old. ADAPT raised the money through raffles and donations at their monthly social meetings.

Reme congratulated Age Concern on reaching their 20th anniversary this year and reinforced the need for Charities and Associations to continue their good work providing the answers, services and assistance for people when necessary.

Looking forward to St Patricks Day Activities will get underway in many bars and restaurants from 10am

n Saturday 17th of March in Cabo Roig, Orihuela Costa, the biggest parade in mainland Europe will take place to honour St Patrick.

Cabo Roig will be the place to party as the parade gets underway at 2pm. The strip will turn into a sea of green for the day with all bars and many restaurants opening at 10am, music starting at 11am on the street and with the face painting, bouncy castles, Irish and flamenco dancers out in force this will ensure a fun day for all the family.

The parade itself will start at the back of the strip at 2pm with the Torrevieja pipes and drums leading the parade with St Patrick himself, our own Jose Antonia Garcia Del This year the Grand Marshall will be former Irish Prime Minister Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, who will be joined by former minister Frank Fahy and Martin Quinn, a former mayor of Galway. We are also delighted to have the Mayor of Orihuela with many of his coun-

cillors with a reviewing stand erected for all the guests.

The parade will be the most colourful yet with bands, floats, samba, drummers and many different associations and groups dressed is fabulous costumes. There will also be a number of ‘not to be missed’ youth dance groups.

The committee would like to thank all the different bars and restaurants, the Mayor and his councillors, for helping us to put this parade together which will culminate with a spectacular fireworks display at 7.30pm.

The Parade will also be featured on TV RTE in Ireland and by many of the Irish papers so it will provide great publicity for the area.

Come along early and enjoy music dancing from 11am on the 17th till 2am in the morning also. There will also be the matter of a ‘not too insignificant’ rugby match between Ireland and England to be shown in many of the bars at 4pm.

There are, of course, celebrations taking place at many other locations in the area, not least of which will be the Emerald Isle in La Florida where proceeds from events will be donated to local charities.

IN ALGERIA CLOSE TO RELEASE

Seven years ago, in January 2011, the young Koria was kidnapped by her father in the Aaiun, one of five Sahrawi camps of Tindouf (a Province in Algeria). She was held just a few hours before catching her flight back to Spain after a family visit since, which time Koria has remained isolated and incommunicado in the town of Mijek, in Western Sahara, under the control of the Polisario Front, a Sahrawi rebel national liberation movement aiming to end Moroccan presence in the Western Sahara.

Koria moved to San Miguel where she lived for ten and a half years for medical reasons, but at the beginning of 2011 the young Saharawi woman saw her life projects abruptly halted, her medical treatment suspended and any opportunity to finish her studies cancelled. She was kidnapped by her father to live a life imposed according to the beliefs and culture that he says will make her "worthy".

Her time in San Miguel had been spent living with her adopted mother, Bienvenida Campillo Lorca, who used the occasion of International Women’s Day, last Thursday, to once again appeal for the release of her daughter so that "no one will forget about Koria

For Bienvenida Campillo, the celebration of International Women’s Day on March 8 is a suitable opportunity to reinforce the demands for women's rights, that include the requirement to "eliminate the stigmatisation and discrimination of biological families towards Saharawi women who have lived for a long time in Spain", and as well as that "the Valencian institutions and the whole of the Spanish State must insist on a solution for these cases of the illegal retention of adult women, currently more than 50 of them, many of whom, like Koria, are Spanish citizens who is legally entitled to the same rights of protection as everyone else living in Spain.

Bienvenida also recently met up with Xelo Angulo Luna, the president of "Fons per la Solidaritat", an association formed by town councils and associations of all the political formations of the Valencian Community that works toward the obtaining the repatriation to Spain of Saharawi women. She explained the circumstances surrounding the kidnap and abduction of Koria who was under the legal guardianship of the Generalitat Valenciana at the time and who continues to be held against her will, isolated and incommunicado in the territory of Western Sahara controlled by the Polisario Front.

Currently help is available at the centre on Wednesday and Friday afternoons, but from April the centre will be open on Monday afternoons too, in order to meet the increased demand.

The workers are all volunteers and assist with documentation to access other help and benefits; provide individually tailored physiotherapy; blood pressure monitoring; lessons in Spanish conversation; card-making and support for the carers, and social events.

The Group would welcome any new volunteers, especially if they have craft skills which they would share as part of the rehabilitation process.

On 24th March Stroke Association are holding a Spring Fair/Open Day, from 10am to 3pm. There will be a range of stalls offering cakes, jewellery, clothes, books, art equipment, tombola etc. A BBQ and music to entertain. So come along to view the facilities, meet some of the people who have had strokes and are mending well, and pick up a bargain for yourself.

The Branch has an extensive social programme arranged including a Poetry Competition, an auction and a “hog roast” in June. Could the US be damaged by Trump’s trade-war?

The pound ended this week where it started against both the US dollar and euro.

The European Central Bank left interest rates on hold despite the Eurozone economy expanding faster than had been anticipated.

Donald Trump continues to throw his weight around announcing new trade tariffs.

The resignation of economic adviser Gary Cohen suggests the White House intends to implement the tariffs on steel and aluminium, despite almost universal opposition including Republicans in Congress.

The Canadian dollar received a lift when Canada was exempted from the tariffs but the US dollar may be in for a rough ride as many think the US will be damaged by a trade war.

Exchange rates at noon on Friday 9th March: GBP/EUR 1.124 (slightly higher) GBP/USD 1.383 (no change) EUR/USD 1.23 (no change) North and South Korea are to hold their first summit in more than a decade. Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump are also to meet in May which is extraordinary after months of mutual hostility. Apparently Kim Jong-un is "committed to denuclearisation" but the North has halted missile and nuclear tests during previous talks, only to resume them when it lost patience or felt it was not getting what it demanded so don’t get too excited.

Pablo Samper, the municipal spokesman for the independent Political Party, Sueña Torrevieja, has warned of the worrying decrease of numbers currently registered on the Padron.

He says that according to date produced by INE, the Spain Statistical Office, Torrevieja is losing it’s population at an enormous pace and at a disturbing rate: having fallen in just 4 years from 105,000 inhabitants in 2013 to 83,500 in 2017.

Samper, argues that "obviously this leads to a series of negative consequences: loss of competences that affect everyone in the town, including our trade, fewer business opportunities and a reduction of State funding, a rather delicate issue since all municipalities are funded according the size of their population.”

International Women’s Day has been celebrated on 8th March since 1917 but don’t we already have gender equality? Drop in Centre celebrates ‘International Women’s Day’ World Women’s Day 8th March and the 100th Anniversary of the Suffragettes was celebrated at a Coffee Morning held at the Drop In Centre CC Ramon de Campoamor by Community Care Association, Inna from the Russian Association together with Katalin Konkoly the Librarian and her Assistants.

Approx 60 supporters and friends enjoyed the refreshments as they gathered to learn what is going on at the Drop In Centre. They were pleasantly surprised, as were the ladies who received a gift of floral plants from Francisco Morales of N332 organisation.

Norah, Corrine, Jolande and Angie some of the Art group displayed their paintings and drawings. Health Therapy sessions were offered by Bobbie.

Jackie and her group demonstrated making cards and gift boxes for Easter, which will be on sale at the Emerald Isle on St Patrick’s Day, 17th March.

Music Therapy sessions are underway, drumming by Nick and gentle exercise to music with Angie, both held every Thursday, (see the list of activities in our advert). New Members are welcome to join the activities offered at the Centre, only €10 a year. Why not try drumming, it is very therapeutic, a great way to relax.

The Spanish Beginners and Intermediate Conversation classes are progressing well, there is limited space available, but if you are interested and want to learn Spanish in order to integrate more, contact

Dance yourself Dizzy

Sue Gibson and her Suzi4fitz fitness and dance ladies have been working hard this last few months rehearsing their moves for their latest charity dance show Dance Yourself Dizzy at the Los Montesinos Music School on March 14th and 15th.

Their final week of rehearsals is next week and Sue is so proud of their achievement. She would like to thank them all for their hard work, dedication and commitment.. They will be performing a wide selection of dances and the show will be compered by the fabulous Graeme Mykal.

All the proceeds will be donated to Los Montesinos town hall, who will buy much needed food vouchers for families.

Although not confirmed the man is thought to have been a relative of his two victims The Civil Guard has arrested a 27 year old Spanish man in Sax, on suspicion of two offenses of attempted murder and two of arson.

Just 24 hours after the fire in a rural apartment block the man was arrested and taken into custody prior to his appearance in court later in the week.

Man arrested in SAX for attempted double murder

First to arrive at the outbreak, which occurred in a ground floor flat on Sunday morning, were two agents of the Guardia Civil. They arrived to the screams of a 40 year old woman and her 14 year old son who were trapped in a second floor flat by the smoke and flames spreading from the apartment below.

Fortunately they were able to beat off the flames until the arrival of firefighters moments later, when they were eventually lifted to safety.

They were then moved to Elda Hospital, where they received medical attention for smoke inhalation after which agents took their statements, while a fire investigation team from Valencia, investigated the possible causes of the fire in the apartment.

San Fulgencio mayor suspends plenary to avoid embarrassment The PSOE have described as ‘shameful’ the decision of San Fulgencio’s embattled mayor, Carlos Ramírez, to suspend the Council Plenary Session due for last Wednesday morning.

The mayor, who has been sentenced by the local judiciary, to eight and a half years disqualification from holding public office, was required to provide the meeting with an explanation about his situation but Ramírez announced on the day preceding the meeting that he cannot hold the session for "personal reasons". No other explanation was given.

The socialist group described the situation as "shameful" saying that the mayor has only cancelled the Plenary "in a new and ridiculous attempt to retain his position as Mayor”.

Coach driver double the alcohol limit with 54 children on board

bus driver was stopped close to Murcia who was almost doubled the maximum permitted alcohol level in his blood. He had 54 children between the ages of 3 and 4 on board at the time along with 4 supervisors.

The Guardia Civil was alerted by several witnesses who said that the driver had been seen drinking alcohol prior to leaving with the children on board.

Traffico positioned two patrols along the route and pulled him onto the hard shoulder at kilometre 9,500 of the RM-15 motorway. He was then escorted to the Venta Alegría Service Area where he was subjected to mandatory blood tests.

He yielded a positive result which was almost twice the maximum rate allowed.

The 38 year old driver, a resident of Caravaca de la Cruz, was reported to the Provincial Traffic Headquarters for driving with an excessive alcohol

rate, which carries a fine of 500 euros and the loss of 4 points on his driving license.

This was the second occasion that the same driver had tested positive in recent months. The previous occasion, when he was driving a minibus with 17 passengers on board, was in early December when he was also double the maximum limit.

Following their evaluation the investigators said that all evidence pointed to the fire being started intentionally.

Evidence collected at the scene, together with statements from several witnesses, led the Guardia Civil to the alleged perpetrator who is thought to have been a relative of those affected, and who had previously been reported for a number of different problems. He had also been in another similar situation when he had burned an adjoining garage in February of this year.

The Civil Guard arrested the man for two offences of attempted and two crimes of arson.

According to researchers, German students studying the Dutch language found that their pronunciation improved remarkably after drinking just one pint of beer each. So, I guess many readers are now wondering if a glass or two of Spanish Rioja before attempting to speak Spanish might be of help?

Sadly, I have no more information about this, but if you too find that your Spanish language skills soar following a few drinks, do please let me know and I will pass this information on to the researchers.

Personally, I am always keen to use technology when possible, and maybe one day I will make an effort to learn Mandarin Chinese whilst I sleep. However, this time I will be investing in a new type of pillow speaker that is connected by Bluetooth, and certainly with no more cables.

As a 'consequence of the UK becoming a third country in the road transport sector, all current EU law-based rights, obligations and benefits [would] cease'.

Not only could this stop drivers taking their own vehicles overseas, failure to reach an agreement could also see Britons blocked from hiring cars when on holiday without a special permit.

It would also affect those drivers who, although resident in Spain, continue to drive on a UK licence.

Perhaps now would be a good time to make that licence change prior to being rushed into it as next year’s deadline approaches.

s the economic loss to the region, following the closure of San Javier Airport, becomes ever more apparent, the C’s have demanded that the regional government urgently develop a plan that will boost the local economy and tourism "to offset the negative impact that the airport closure will have to the municipality and its region."

With the closure of the airport announced for the end of 2018, Antonio Murcia and Miguel Sanchez, the Regional spokesmen for Murcia and San Javier said, "The so-called 'popular alliance' between the mayor, José Miguel Luengo, and the regional government has deeply hurt San Javier, with the loss of the airport.”

“We have asked what plans they have at the local and regional level to replace the losses that our economy will suffer, but there has been no response. There is only silence and lack of direction, amplified by the initial decision of the regional government to build a new airport while the State continued to invest in a second runway in San Javier, a profitable airport that is now going to close."

The C’s councillor reminded the mayor that "you cannot leave everything until the last moment, you cannot live in sin and repent at the last moment."

On the Mar Menor, Miguel Sánchez said that "we will be vigilant in ensuring that the promised investment for the regeneration of the Mar Menor, 28.8 million euros thanks to the C’s, is a non-negotiable issue and is wisely spent".

He said that the whole issue must be depoliticised, the money must be invested well and with expert guidance.

However as AENA announced that they intend to have Corvera airport operational as soon as possible, but no later than the end of 2018, the air traffic control contract is the latest agreement to be readied for tender. It is thought that the term will be awarded for a period of eight years at a cost of a million euros a year, But one Leader reader, who did not wish to be named, was adamant in saying that AENA’s timeframe is extremely unlikely. “It is not going to happen. Torrevieja to expand Free Guided Tours Tourists will visit important points in the history of the city such as the Eras de la Sal, the Sea and Salt Museum or the Casino.

Torrevieja has launched a new service providing free guided tours of the city centre for anyone wishing to know more about the history and the customs of the municipality. Tourism councillor, Fanny Serrano (PSOE), explained that the routes will show tourists the tradition and origin of Torrevieja through it’s main landmarks, many of which will focus on the city’s connection with the sea and salt.

The route will take visitors to some of the most emblematic museums and monuments that express the local cultural heritage, such as the Sea and Salt Museum, the Monumental Historic Site of the Eras de la Sal, the Casino, the Dike of Levante and, optionally, at a cost of 2 euros, the Floating Museums: Submarine S-61 Dolphin and the Albatross patrol boat.

These guided routes are only available because of the T'Avalem Jove Plus Employment Workshops, provided by councillor Víctor Ferrández (IU), and the Tourist Seasonalisation program, and aim to raise awareness about the heritage of Torrevieja to both residents and tourists.

"Thanks to the employment programs, we now have more tourist

guides, which has allowed us to introduce this initiative," explained Serrano. Initially, three routes per week have been scheduled as follows: Wednesday and Friday from 10 am to 12 pm and Saturdays from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. The first experience of this kind is scheduled for next Friday, March 16.

Each one of the guided tours will be conducted in Spanish and English, with a maximum of 15 participants each day. The councillor also stated that if there is a demand, the tours can also be be offered in German or French as guides are available who speak these languages.

Registration can be done by completing an online form on the website at www.turismodetorrevieja.com. Alternatively those wishing to take part can visit the tourist office of Paseo de Vista Alegre, from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 7 pm and on Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm.

Over 10,000 information brochures have been published and distributed to tourist establishments and tourist information offices in the province. These guided routes are added to those that have already been available for more than a year and a half around the natural park of the lagoons.

Volunteers throughout the area have a wealth of knowledge and work with social workers, attending training sessions to keep up to date and are very happy to give their time to assist in the completion of the application form and also to suggest other means of valuable support that may be available.

Some people may also be able to apply for help through the Spanish Ley de Dependencia (you need to be resident and on the padron). Your GP, Social Worker and town hall can help you.

Again, charities can point you in the right direction because we work alongside social workers day after day and this is also FREE of any charge.

Carp R Us Carp-R-Us travelled down to Murcia for the third round of the Spring Series. The light rain that was falling at the draw quickly disappeared and the match was fished in lovely spring-like weather. The bleak seem to be slowly reappearing and both Steve Fell and Alan Smith caught a number of these to bolster their weights. First was Steve Fell with 6.12 kg using feeder for carp and 3m whip for bleak, second was Alan Smith with 3.12 kg using the pole as did Geoff tempest for third (2.74 kg) and Derek King for fourth (2.04 kg).

PAIRS COMPETITION SEMI’S AND FINALS NEXT WEEK. Unfortunately, Lee Maiden of the Jackals has been abandoned by teammate Andy Rutter who is off somewhere painting aeroplanes.

Rutter and Maiden will still get a trophy each for reaching the semifinals though. The remaining pairs lads will be playing at Amigos.

The ladies’ competition will be 3 pairs from the Jaguars and one pair from the Bees so a Jaguar pair cannot fail to reach the finals! Will it be last year’s Winners Patty Poo and Wendy Woo or could Lisa and Liz give them a run for their money? Simone and Lelly could also feature in the last two pairs standing but maybe Bees Gilly and Helen will out gun us all! The ladies’ competition will be held round the corner from the Men at Pati’s Bar so head on down to Los Dolses if you want to watch!

In the Monday league we travelled to San Luis to play their Romulans team. We won the game by 122 shots to 104 gaining 9 points in the process. Our scoring rinks were, John Jukes, Dennis Wade and Wayne Osguthorpe 21 – 13, Judith Simpson, Linda and Jeff Hier 23 – 12, Irene Graham, Les Davis and Terry Hucknall 27 – 14, Colin Simpson, Wayne Jackson and Alan Miller 21 – 21 This league is now finished and we finished a credible 4th only 14 points behind the league winners.

On Tuesday we played a Federated 4’s game at home against San Luis Bazas. The game resulted in a win for us by 57 shots to 39 and we got 6 points with having 2 rinks up. These were, Linda Hier, Les Davis, Jack Linehan and Jeff Hier 17 – 16, John Jukes, Carol Linehan, Fred Trigwell and Wayne Osguthorpe 33 – 6 There is only one game left in this league away at La Siesta.

It was also our last game in the Friday league and we played at home against Emerald Isle Claymores. We needed 8 points to make sure we stayed up but only managed four in a 72 to 100 shot defeat. So we will have to wait for other results to find out our fate. Our two winning rinks were, Les Davis, Terry Hucknall, Barry Evans 15 – 14, Margaret Odell, Bryan Eatough, John Hurlock 14 – 11 Many thanks to all members who have played and supported our teams throughout the season.

This season (2017-2108) saw Quesada Diamonds play in the Levante Lawn Bowling, South Alicante Winter Triples League in the Discovery Division.

Diamonds gained promotion as champions from the Voyager Division last year (2016-2017), then finished a very credible second, thus securing promotion for the second year running to the Enterprise Division.

The Discovery Division was won by San Luis Trekkers who had 154 points, followed in second place by Quesada Diamonds on 146 points. Third place went to Greenlands Maples on 127 points.

A celebration end of season meal was held directly after the Diamonds final match at a local restaurant La Pura Vida. A great time was had by all, and the Diamonds are now looking forward to playing in the top division next year.

Lo Crispin Golf Society at Alicante On a cold, but dry morning 31 members 'teed up' to contest the Society's first 'major', the Claret Jug. Alicante is always a challenge and today proved no exception, which was reflected in the scores!

Although the course is always challenging, the greens and fairways are usually in good condition. Today however a number of players commented that some of the areas around the greens were a little 'scruffy' and threadbare.

As it was our first 'Major' of the year we did not go straight back to the Lo Crispin Tavern as usual, but many of us gathered there in the evening, where the prize presentations were followed by a meal, prepared by the always friendly and accommodating staff.

Due to the fact of it being the first 'Major' of the season we did not award separate Gold and Silver division prizes.

The winner of the Claret Jug was : Dirk Ameel (one of our Belgian members) with 26 pts. off 12. In second place was Mike Cutts with 25 pts off 19 (on count back), followed by another of our Belgian members Dicky Claeys, who also happens to the Treasurer, also with 25 pts. off 9.

NTP's on Par 3's: Hole 3 - Steve Harrington, Hole 6 - nobody managed to reach the green or stay on it. Hole 12 - Alan Hunt, Hole 17 John Henderson.

On this beautifully warm spring day the TPGS ventured over to the newly renovated Vistabella which now has 18 holes. The new holes proved to be a challenge for most of us particularly when you where being fed duff information (thank you Mr Temple!)

The greens where slicker than most, but the fairways needed a bit of a watering. The 2’s pot was won by the in form dodgy Declan Crowley, Callum Hitcham and John Aird. Callum also won three NTP'S, Dickie McAllen and big Ron Temple picking up the other two. Ian Parkinson came last with a woeful 20 pts.

Linda Ottway was by far the best lady with 31 pts.

In the Silver division Barry "shouting man" Mitchell came 3rd with 34 pts Richie Maher 2nd with 35 but the winner was the popular Bill O'Gillies. The Gold division was won by young Callum Hitcham with an impressive 36pts of his 5 hcap, 2nd was dodgy Dec with 35 pts and 3rd was Tony McSmale with 34 pts.

Dramatic finale as Torry almost rescue a point

I

t has been a busy week in the transfer market, as Torry look to shake up a lacklustre side that has slumped to mid table in the Preferente division. Out have gone Mario, Calderon and Juanpe, whilst 3 new players have joined the club.

A big Torry welcome to Ecuadorian midfielder Josu from Xativa Olympic, central defender Samuel from Madrid Preferente side Ciempozuelos, and goalkeeper Chus, who makes the short trip from Bigastro.

A vast improvement from the hugely disappointing home defeat to Pinoso was required if Pedreño’s men were to take anything from the trip to Callosa and while the scoreline might suggest a close encounter the home side were streets ahead of their visitors and could have been out of sight by half time.

Back in October, Torry comprehensively beat lowly Callosa to go 2nd in the league, but a poor run of form has seen them slip to a point behind their hosts. New Torry owners were muted to

have completed a takeover during week, but if they did, the club PR machine has yet to confirm such news.

With the return of Vicente after suspension, and the inclusion of new signings Samuel and Josu, the band of Torry followers who had travelled to Callosa were hopeful of a better performance than they had seen of late but it soon became evident that there is still a long way to go for the much changed Salineros.

Callosa were on the front foot from the start with early chances for the hosts, including a Molina effort that shaved Vidal’s post in the opening minute. We hoped that the visitors were just settling in but as the game progressed there was no improvement from Torry. Passes were going astray, there was little movement off the ball and all the football was coming from the home side.

Molina broke the deadlock on 20 minutes when, following a well worked move, he slid the ball under the advancing Vidal to put the hosts in front.

Callosa were well on top and with the lions share of possession they could have extended their lead had Regueras and Salva not wasted efforts midway through the half.

It was fully 35 minutes before we saw any threat at all from the visitors with Zaragoza heading over a Santi cross. Moments later the same player had a second effort, but he could only drag his free kick wide of Callosa’s goal.

With half time approaching we thought there might be a glimmer for the visitors but a defensive mix up allowed Salva to slide the ball home from close range to extend Callosa’s lead.

And then, as I sat and pondered another headline reporting a lacklustre Torry display, two unlikely goals in as many minutes from Samu almost turned the game on its head.

After Silva was tripped in the area Samu calmly sent Tur the wrong way in the 86th minute for what we though was a consolation but just 60 seconds later the same player netted from close range as he connected with a Silva cross.

But unfortunately, despite the dramatic finale, it was very much a case of too little too late with the final 3-2 scoreline flattering a Torry team that were dominated for long periods of the game by their hosts, a performance that was simply not good enough on the day.

So it’s back to the drawing board for Pedreño who will no doubt be delighted that the team now have a free week prior to their next home game against Redován on Sunday 26 March.

The team talk had little effect on the visitors as the home side continued to dominate. Vastly improved from the previous meeting between the two teams Callosa were pulling all the strings with Molina hitting the side netting prior to Vidal pulling off excellent saves from Salva and Regueras.

In between times there was a rare opportunity for Zaragoza but on 70 minutes the home side sealed the points when
