painting of the local Catholic Church, La Capilla de las Mil Palmeras, by the President of the Orihuela Costa and District Branch, Pastor Keith Brown.

A decision to make a suitable gift to the town was made in appreciation of the outstanding support provided to the Branch in all of the ten years since it was first formed.

Continued From Page One RBL Presentation In that time the one constant factor has been the use for its Remembrance Services of La Capilla de las Mil Palmeras so it was thought that an oil painting of the church might be an appropriate gift.

The project was discussed at a chance meeting with well-known local artist and RBL supporter Suzanne Stokes, and with the assistance of her photographer husband, David, a number of suitable images of the church were captured and the venture was underway.

When Suzanne spoke to the Branch President after the presentation she admitted at just how nervous she had been on accepting the commission. “Being an artist who specialises on the human form I was extremely worried that I might not be able to do the building justice. It is a beautiful church and there were lots of elaborate shadows and reflected light that I had to consider, but on seeing the reaction of the mayor and the branch members to the painting I am absolutely delighted at how it turned out.”

In thanking the branch members Mayor Ignacio Ramos was clearly delighted by the gesture. He spoke of his appreciation of the RBL, the good work that they do and the importance of the role that they play in the local community. He talked of the two world wars, the awful losses that had been

suffered across Europe, the Commonwealth and the rest of the world by all nations, and the importance in ensuring that it must not happen again.

As he addressed the branch the mayor became quite emotional. He said how deeply moved he was by the presentation, the kind words from members and the genuine affection that he felt from within the room as the presentation was made.

Following the departure of the mayor Pastor Keith welcomed Sheila Chinnock to the front of the room.

He explained how, in recent years, Sheila had donated numerous paintings to local charities on the Costa Blanca, and last year how she had decided to combine her two hobbies to create a poppy calendar in order to raise funds for the Royal British Legion.

The calendar features some of Sheila’s most popular poppy paintings, including one that was commissioned by Stevie Spit for his Royal British Legion and AECC fundraiser at Benidorm Palace.

As a result of her endeavours Sheila was able to present the proceeds from the sales, almost 250 euro, to the RBL Poppy Appeal Organiser, Eddie Coleman.

Sheila said: “If my paintings and this calendar can make someone happy by raising a smile and by helping someone in need by raising a euro, then they will have done everything I hoped.”

2018 Social Calendar underway at RNA

Members of the Torrevieja branch Royal Naval Association met for their first lunch of the year at La Piazza ll at Punta Marina commercial centre, Punta Prima on January 18th.

As usual a good time was had by all, eating and socialising together in the January sunshine.

Perrotón to raise awareness about responsible animal ownership

The gentle walk with pets will start at Villamartin Plaza and cover a distance of about three kilometres

he Councilor for International Residents of the City of Orihuela, Sofía Álvarez, and the Councilor for Health, Noelia Grao, have announced details of the 1st Orihuela Costa Perrotón, a joint action by both council departments to be held on February 25 at 10 am starting at Villamartín square.

The walk will cover a distance of about three kilometres and will take the form of "a walk accompanied by pets where participants can enjoy a day with family, friends and their animals.”

It is also intended to raise awareness about the responsible ownership of animals and to publicise the activities that take place in the Municipal Animal Protection Centre," said Cllr Grao.

The councillor of Health spoke of "the firm commitment of this Government Team, and especially of this council, for animal welfare."

She said that there would be representation on the walk by a number of different groups and organisations including manager of the Municipal Animal Protection Centre, "who will speak about the different ways in which residents can help, whether by volunteering to work at the shelter or by adopting an animal."

The event also has a solidarity aspect, since participants will also be able to make donations of cleaning products or food, or purchase handicrafts from the association’s fundraising stand.

Sofía Álvarez said that "this is an initiative that international residents have welcomed with great enthusiasm and affection," adding that "the idea is to spend a day enjoying the area with our pets and, of course, to make people realise that animals are not just toys and that you have to take care of them".

The council will also make buses available to residents in the urban areas to travel to Villamartin and take part in this initiative.

Registration can be made through the Tourist Offices at the Orihuela Costa Town Hall.

Officers from FAOC, the Federaciรณn de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa-Alicante, along with delegates from schools, sports clubs and other associations, met with councillors recently, to discuss the Municipal Sports Plan and in particular, the existing needs, development and progress, of sports facilities for residents of the Orihuela Costa.

At the meeting they were asked to formulate a bid of sports requirements for all residents situated on the coast together with their thoughts on the state of any existing facilities.

However they were told that the bid must be submitted by the end of February if it is to attract any municipal funding, otherwise the Orihuela Costa will once again go without.

Ciudadanos demands parity in police force salaries Some weeks ago officers from the National Police and the Guardia Civil in Orihuela, members of la Asociación Justicia Salarial de Policías y Guardias Civiles (JUSAPOL), took to the streets as they appealed for public support in their demands for parity in the salary structures of their two organisations with the Local Police.

Currently local police, especially in the larger cities, earn an average of 2,100 euros per month, whilst the national police officers are paid rather less at approximately 1,400 euros per month.

The difference also extends to the add ons, extra payments, overtime and suchlike and even pensions where, being related to basic salary, the retirement pay of a national guard officer is about 1,000 euros, whilst that of a local agent is double.

In Torrevieja their struggle has now been taken up by Ciudadanos where the spokeswoman for the municipal group, Pilar Gómez Magán, has criticised the mayor, José Manuel Dolón for, "underestimating the strength of feeling" in respect to the motion submitted by her party to even out the salaries of the Security Forces. She said that the local government "has scorned" the proposal of C’s at the last meeting of the City Council, and the subject has now been excluded from debate at the next plenary session.

Gómez Magán has criticised Dolón who has said that "other issues have a greater priority, not the equalisation of the salaries of Civil Guards and National Police with the regional police forces."

The mayor has stated that the problem is a national one and that the Government should take charge of any negotiations, and that's why he was not going to include the item on the plenary agenda.

Ciudadanos also lamented the lack of support in the matter from other municipal groups.

Dumbbell killer found guilty in Orihuela

Urgent sanitation work gets underway in Callosa Urgent sanitation works are underway on Calle Convento and Pedro Aragonés in Callosa de Segura at a cost of 45,000 euros.

“There have been problems with the drains for a long time which have been causing a build-up of water resulting in a constant bad smell", said the mayor, Fran Maciá.

“In Calle Pedro Aragonés the council has had to place a water tank for the last 4 months which has been constantly flushing the drains in order to keep the accumulation of waste and the smells to a minimum.”

The mayor said that the problems that have arisen in terms of the sanitation are due to "almost zero maintenance of the facilities in past years" that under the terms of the contract are the responsibility of the council, so they have invested 300 thousand euros in the work and plan to continue with the renewal of the entire damaged network with periodic maintenance.

After sitting late into the night a jury has found a man guilty of murdering his wife with a dumbbell in Orihuela, and then raping her before fleeing to Murcia, where he stayed several days until he eventually broke down and confessed the crime to his sister-in-law.

The verdict was eventually announced in the Elche Provincial Court late on Monday night, after the jury concluded its deliberation, following several hours of being locked in a room, and after six days of judicial proceedings But it was not until 00.30 hours when the ruling was announced. The reason given for the delay was that the Civil Guard had returned the prisoner to his cell in Fontcalent by mistake, despite being initially instructed that he should stay in the Elche court until the jury’s decision was published. He didn’t arrive back at the ilicitanos court room until after 11pm.

The prisoner confessed to the crime during the first session of the trial, last Tuesday, although he claimed that he had killed his partner whilst suffering from a mental disorder derived from drug use. Using his testimony the defence were calling for him to be found innocent of the charge of murder.

Meanwhile, the prosecution requested that he serve a jail sentence of 37 years, stating that he was in possession of all of his mental faculties when he committed the crime, and was fully aware of what he was doing at all times.

However they did subsequently reduce their request to 27 years in

prison for both the murder and rape, accepting the mitigating circumstances in that he suffered from a personality disorder due to drug addiction.

After he had killed his wife the man fled by taxi to Murcia where he took refuge in a boarding house. He had with him 2,400 euros.

He stayed at the house until his sister in law called him on the phone asking if she could go round to visit her sister at their Orihuela home.

He warned her not to go because she was not going to like what she would find. After that call, the woman called the emergency services, and the Orihuela Local Police were despatched to the house where they found the body of the dead woman, lying on the bed.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the murder was committed in the early hours of 2nd August. The couple had argued during the early part of the evening. Later, taking advantage of the fact that she was sleeping, he took a dumbbell and struck her eleven times on the head until he was convinced that she was dead following which he raped her before fleeing to Murcia.

The defendant was arrested five days later by the National Police.

Now that the verdict has been issued, the judge from the Seventh Section of the Provincial Court of Alicante, based in Elche, who had occasion to reprimand the prisoner for his arrogant attitude in the courtroom, will decide the sentence, which, according to judicial sources, will range from 19 to 28 years in prison.

Benejuzar arrest following Nationwide ticket scam

T

he Civil Guard has arrested a 33 year old Spanish man for 14 alleged crimes of fraud committed across the whole of Spain. It is estimated that he sold over 5,000 euros worth of tickets for major events including football matches, motorcycling world championships and concerts, all of them fictitious, for which he demanded the money in advance.

The Almoradí Guardia Civil received several complaints from people who claimed that they had been cheated by the same man. He would advertise the events online and when individuals made contact he would take payment for their tickets by transfer or by a mobile app, promising to send the tickets to their homes by post.

However the clients would never receive the tickets because they did not exist, as the images and posters he used had been created to advertise events that were completely fictional..

The monies taken ranged from 20 to 140 euros, depending on whether it was just a deposit or the full payment.

When customers subsequently complained about not having received the tickets, he then asked for a second payment of 40 euros using the excuse that the postage costs had been more expensive than expected. The client would inevitably pay again.

At this point the relationship with the scammer ended as, satisfied that he had his money, he would then block his customers telephones so they could no longer reach him to complain.

When agents from Almoradí Research Area began to contact the

social media platforms such as Facebook and in WhatsApp groups that he had created they found that one of the groups included his name.

They were eventually able to track him down to Benejúzar where they effected an arrest. Although it is thought that about 23 people were taken in by the scam only 14 have filed a complaint, however new allegations following the arrest are not ruled out. The detainee was subsequently released having been charged.

In addition to the sanitation project th council has also put in place a street asphalting plan which is being implemented in three different areas of the town with a municipal investment of 82,000 euros.

Owners demand bus service at Costa Calida golf resorts

T

ogether with his wife Julie, Mike Frisbee, a professional photographer from Stockport, has owned a townhouse at La Torre Golf Resort since it opened in 2006 and although the couple don’t live there permanently, like so many other owners, they do try to get over as often as they can.

Mike told The Leader that although La Torre has 2,650 properties, it is not served by public transport. El Valle Golf Resort, Hacienda Riquelme Golf Resort and Las Terrazas de la Torre Golf Resort are all in a similar situation. Between all four resorts, there are over 6,700 properties.

For that reason Mike has started a petition on Change.org, asking

for a bus stop outside the resort gates. For La Torre Golf Resort, it would mean a diversion of an existing bus route of just one kilometre. In less than 2 weeks the petition has already attracted almost 900 signatures.

The petition calls on the management of Lycar and Latbus bus companies to provide the resorts with better public transport, for which they are already indirectly contributing.

Many owners have signed on the padron, which means central government allocates money for local services, which of course should include public transport. Yet the residents are not seeing the benefit of this extra funding.

Better public transport will enhance the area and not only benefit the owners at the resorts but also local businesses. And of course, more passengers using the buses can only be good for the bus companies.

Mike says that he is not suggesting a bus running through the resorts - just one that stops outside the gates, as Mar Menor Golf Resort has.

he latest production by the Campoverde Theatre Group will be their new supper show Taking the P out of Panto! Again it will be performed at the Fiesta Plaza, Republica Dominica, Pueblo Principe that has hosted several very successful supper shows over recent months. Again we are offering a one course meal and a fun filled show, all for the price of 10€ Campoverde Theatre Group’s original new show, Taking the P out of Panto! will consist of short, funny sketches of many pantomime favourites, giving a little twist to well known shows such as Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Goldie Locks and the 3 Bears, Aladdin amongst many others. At the half-time point of the evening an extremely good home-made buffet meal was served up by the staff. This was well received by all including the vegetarians in our midst who were well taken care of. There was more than enough food to go round.

Last Saturday the Torrevieja branch of the U3A held their first dedicated quiz night. The meeting was held in the Florentile Camp site restaurant which was packed very early with members all vying for the glory of winning the top prizes!!

Approx 90 people filled the room and had a truly enjoyable evening which was hosted by local 'celebrity' Ricky Neil who as well as asking the questions managed to keep everyone happy and

This was the first specific quiz night to be held by the Torrevieja U3A so it was good to see how popular it proved to be. Due to the popularity this will, hopefully, be the forerunner of many more events of a similar nature. Regrettably there were a lot of disappointed members who were unable to be accommodated this time around so they will need to get in early next time to ensure a place!

A raffle in aid of one of the charities that the club supports produced a very healthy profit of €170.

As an unusual twist one surprised guest was presented with a bottle of Cava as a result of being seated on the chair to which the staff had previously attached a sticker to the underside of their chair.

Spotlight on Finca de Castellana Finca La Castellana is a small animal charity close to San Miguel de Salinas where, over the last 7 years, Janette and Antonio have helped nearly 1000 animals.

With charity status the work of the organisation is now officially recognised and as such it can officially raise money to help defray its costs, approximately €3,500 plus each month to cover food and for the general care of the animals being cared for.

There is a continuous stream of abandoned and injured animals every day, week, and month, all of which need the care that they deserve and as such it can be a very costly business.

The team recently attended class 2B at CEIP Gloria Fuertes primary school where their young representatives, Evie and Rebbeca, talked about Finca la Castellana and the care that it provides to all animals.

They took along with them Flo, a young chicken saved from the orchard when she got separated from her mum. Teachers, Sra. Carmen Mellado and Sr. Morote Marco commented; I do not know if we will teach today, but surely these faces of happiness will make it an unforgettable day in the lives of our children.”

One other animal that has recently come into the care of the charity is Tootsie, the condition of which shocked all the helpers.

Tootsie was found to be a hermaphrodite, only the 3rd recorded case in Spain. On further medical examination it was decided that if Tootsie was left how she was, serious health problems could occur in later years. So to give her a

chance of a full and happy life, a 4 hour operation was performed by Eduardo Nunez, veterinary surgeon of Eduardo's Pets veterinary clinic.

Not only did the dog have a full complement of male & female genitals but such an amazing arrangement that all of her vital organs had to be re-aligned.

Fortunately Tootsie has now come through the operation as a healthy little girl with the most amazing temperament and will to survive. She is fighting fit and is now ready for adoption.

Farewell to Bruno The volunteers of Finca San Miguel de Salinas recently said goodbye to Bruno, the Finca’s pet Rottweiler. Bruno had been at the animal shelter since he was a pup.

He knew the campo very well, and often walked off by himself for about 20 minutes, sometimes rather more when he was chasing a rabbit or a cat and he forgot the time.

The sad news came at the end of December when the vet diagnosed acute arthritis. Heike gave him a foster home for his last few weeks and when Bruno made a visit to the Finca in late January it was to say his goodbyes. He needed so much morphine and so many painkillers that they took their toll and he passed away just a couple of days later.

Dear Bruno, you will always be in our hearts. We will never forget you. RIP

Despite a great homelife, where he is somewhat spoilt, he has decided to go walkies on his own. Barney is 13 years old, looks very kitten-ish , very timid, a little overweight but used to people.

He was always happy to go for a walk, he oved all the female volunteers and they loved him.

Pets in Spain have recenty rescued four Chihuahuas from a puppy farm. Thay are all around 4 years old.

Oreo is a very timid little girl so will need a home with patience to help her overcome what she has been through. She is chipped, vaccinated and good with other dogs.

In the summer of 2016 he went ‘walkies’ for over 3 hours and we were all very worried. Fortunately he came back, but since that time we have always taken him out on a lead, concerned that something could happen to him.

But we now have to move on for all the other animals at the Finca that are still very much in our need.

Chickpea and egg breakfast

Not any more, since hummus is now seen as a trendy addition to any sandwich, wrap, pita bread, or whatever the ‘in word' for a lunchtime snack is at the moment.

The humble chickpea is grown in parts of Spain and the Canary Islands, where it is a popular addition to traditional stews and soups.

Known as ‘garbanzo’, the chickpea has been grown in the Mediterranean, Middle East and parts of Africa for more than 7000 years.

I have rarely given chickpeas much thought. I know that I like them and, as vegetarians, we have regularly used them in our meals for many years. They are versatile, absorb flavours in the most delicious way and the bottled variety can usually be found at a very good price in local supermarkets.

Although, nutritionally, I tend to be on the side of chickpea fans, I am not sure that they are particularly good for breakfast, but then again, I have never eaten them for breakfast and intend to stick to

No, the real reason is that the crop has been very poor in the last few years and this has led to an inability to meet demand, which in turn has led to a price increase.

The major UK supermarkets completely ran out of the product for several weeks last year, and the ready availability of hummus is still looking doubtful, which has led to serious talk of a ‘National Hummus Crisis’. After all, what exactly are people supposed to put on their pita bread? Chickpeas and hummus used to be known as ‘the food for poor people’.

Apparently, the boy starts his day with a bowl of chickpeas rather than coco pops for breakfast, which brought forth a flurry of debate, and some abuse from fans of coco pops, who consider that all children should start the day with this sugary feast, washed down with chocolate milk, rather than a highly nutritious bowl of chickpeas.

The increasing demand for hummus, which is made from chickpeas, is also to blame since supermarket hummus is in high demand in the UK. The price of chickpeas is the main reason for the rapid increase in the price of hummus.

I was interested to see that the thorny issue of chickpeas has featured quite heavily in the press recently. A Tweet by a Spanish food blogger featured a picture of her son, alongside the claim that her son doesn’t know what a biscuit is, which led to an interesting spat.

The blogger raises some good points about nutrition, since it appears that breakfast for many Spanish children, as well as for children in the UK, has turned into a morning frenzy with many children being stuffed with sugar before being sent to school.

Of course, in worst case scenarios, children are being sent to school without any breakfast at all, which has led an increasing demand for breakfast clubs to be established in schools in an attempt that children start the day with at least a reasonable breakfast.

What’s the name for a battered chick pea? Hummus, of course, which is apparently in serious trouble due to a worldwide shortage of chickpeas. Maybe Spanish children are eating them all for breakfast?

The ancient Greeks tucked into them as snacks, and they are a popular addition to Spain’s national dish, ‘cocido’, which is a stew that consists of chickpeas and pork.

In the Canary Islands, there is a similar dish, but made with beef and chickpeas. The ingredients of these stews are not an exact one, since I guess much depends upon what the restaurant has available at the time, but I can almost guarantee that chickpeas will be lurking in there somewhere. Just don’t get me started on the potential shortage of falafel!

Disappointing week in the SABA Leagues as in the Enterprise Division the Apollos away at Quesada Pearls, on a cold and windy day, lost by 117 shots to 88 winning on 2 rinks and losing the points 10-4.Winning rinks for the Apollos were Pat Moore, Brian Gardiner and Jean Cooper who lead 19-2 after nine ends and finished up winning 27-11.Dawn Taylor with Brian and Pat Harman lead from the start and won 15-10.

In the Voyager Division the Pioneers travelled to the tricky rinks at El Rancho to play the Raiders and despite an excellent win by 27-10 from Dennis Andrew, Barbara Cooper and Alan Mawer this was the only winning rink. The overall shots difference being 89-110.Two points to La Siesta and twelve to El Rancho.

In the The Fed 4’s the Parakeets entertained Quesada Leopards and lost 6-2 by 62 shots to 44.La Siesta’s winning rink was Joy and Brian Gardiner with Jim Hudson and Jean Cooper wining 23-12.

The Winter League team were at away to Monte Mar and managed to win on two rinks and losing on three. The winning rinks were Bill and Sue Jordan with Ann Edgerton and George Richardson by 17-12 and Barbara Cooper, Rod Edgerton, Jim Hudson and Brian Fraser winning 17-14.The overall shots being 66-85.

Good result for the Blues winning 14-0 in their home match against Horadada Royals with the overall shots being 128-79.Biggest winning rink for the Blues came from John and Dawn Taylor with Brian Harman winning 23-7.Another good win for Norman Adcroft, Dave Blackie and Alex Morrice winning 25-14.The remainder of the rinks also had good wins for a well-deserved victory.

The Golds winning run came to an end with a 10-4 loss at Quesada.

Winning rinks for La Siesta came from Gary Randall, Rod Edgerton and Alan Mawer winning 20-11 whilst Dennis Andrew, Ken Livingstone and Sid Gallup won 20-19. The overall shots were in favour of Quesada by 113 shots to 105.

While we won on four rinks we lost the game by 112 shots to 123 since one of our rinks dropped two sevens and an eight which didn’t help our cause. Well done to our winning rinks of, Judith Simpson, Dennis Wade and Alan Miller 24 – 18, Irene Graham, Les Davis and Terry Hucknall 27 – 18, Carol Linehan, Jack Linehan and Mick Kirby 19 – 15, Jenny Davis, Wayne Jackson and Barry Evans 21 – 10 On Tuesday we again had a home game in the Federated 4’s league against Country Bowls. We shared the points at four apiece. We had two winning rinks but lost the match on overall shots by 47 to 51.Our winning rinks were Pat Patton, Peter Davis, Jack Linehan and Brian Patton 22 – 18, Irene Graham, Carol Linehan, Fred Trigwell and Barry Evans 15 – 14.

In the Southern league we had an away game against La Siesta Blues. This ended up a disaster as we lost on all rinks with a shot margin of 79 to 128.Enough said.

El Rancho Bowls Club A good day for both teams on Monday, in result and play. The Raiders played host to La Siesta Pioneers and turned in a good performance taking 5 rinks to Pioneers 1 and also taking the overall shots. David Wright, Ann C Taylor and Bob Taylor 24-13. Meanwhile the Pintos were at Emerald Isle taking on the Moonrakers, in a splendid match with several close rinks and fortunately the rain held off until close of play. The Moonrakers proved to be great company as well as opponents. In the end the Pintos came away with 4 rinks to Moonrakers’ 2 and the overall shots by just the small margin of 2.

On Tuesday the Broncos played their re-scheduled match at home against La Manga Crusaders and what a cracking match they had in taking all the points, of course we all know that the speed of the mat is a little different from the grass at La Manga, but it is a splendid result from good play. On Thursday the Mustangs played their re- arranged match at Emerald Isle against their Cavaliers, we had a good match with several rinks that were close and could have gone either way. But in the end the Mustangs, with the home advantage took 4 rinks to the Cavaliers’ 2 and the overall shots by a small margin.

Friday morning found the Mustangs playing the Lanzadores at Vistabella, who gave us a tough match and took full advantage of the home mat to take 4 rinks to the Mustangs’ 1 the other drawn; they also took the overall shots by a reasonable margin.

Meanwhile the broncos were at home against San Luis Pumas, some of whom struggled to adjust to the speed of the mat. The broncos had a great day and took all the points. Weather for the match was perfect and it was hoped this might stimulate the carp to feed better. In the end, this didn’t really happen. Dave Hoare on peg 18 did manage to find some and finished with 18.32kg caught on bread.

Open de España to return to the European Tour The Open de España, one of the oldest and most celebrated tournaments in Continental Europe, will return to the European Tour in April. After its absence from the schedule in 2017, the 91st playing of the Open de España will take place at the Centro Nacional de Golf in Madrid – the home of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation – from April 12-15; the €1.5 million tournament fulfilling a pledge that European Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley made during a visit to Spain’s capital last year when he promised the event would return to the European Tour in 2018.

Pelley said: “I am delighted to announce the return of the Open de España to our schedule. The roll call of champions reads like a Who’s Who of the game itself and we look forward very much to seeing who will add their name to that illustrious list in a couple of months’ time.

“Our game thrives on prestigious national championships such as the Open de España and we thank everyone at the Royal Spanish Golf Federation and the Madrid Golf Federation for helping us make this happen.”

First contested played in 1912, the Open de España was also the first tournament played in the European Tour’s inaugural season in 1972, with home favourite Antonio Garrido crowned as champion. Several Spanish greats followed onto the Roll of Honour including Seve Ballesteros with three victories (1981 El Prat, 1985 Vallromanes, 1995 Club de Campo Villa de Madrid), Sergio García (2002 El

Cortijo), Álvaro Quirós (2010 RCG Sevilla) and Miguel Ángel Jiménez (2014 PGA de Catalunya).

Also victorious in the Championship have been Major Champions Arnold Palmer (1975 La Manga Club), Bernhard Langer (1984 and 1989 Campo de Golf Parador El Saler), Sir Nick Faldo (1987 RC Las Brisas), Padraig Harrington (1996 Club de Campo Villa de Madrid) and Charl Schwartzel (2007 Centro Nacional de Golf), alongside European Number Ones Colin Montgomerie (1994 Club de Campo Villa de Madrid) and Robert Karlsson (2001 Campo de Golf Parador El Saler).

Gonzaga Escauriaza, President of the Royal Spanish Golf Federation, said: “The Open de España is back on the European Tour International Schedule, which is great news for Spanish golf and we are doubly delighted to be welcoming it back to our home at the Centro Nacional de Golf.

Aside from the 2007 Open de España, the Centro Nacional de Golf has also played host to the 2009 Madrid Masters on the European Tour, won by Englishman Ross McGowan; and the 2006 Challenge de España on the European Challenge Tour, won by Frenchman Adrien Mörk who pipped to the title, amongst others, a young German golfer by the name of Martin Kaymer.

With the Open de España now confirmed, the number of Race to Dubai counting tournaments in 2018 still stands at 47 after the news that the Philippines Golf Championship, scheduled for March 15-18, will not now take place this year.

Spanglish Golf Society @ Altorreal In assn with Sapphire Properties and Costa Blanca Green Fee Services For this months meeting the Spanglish Golf Society and 27 players visited the established course at Altorreal taking advantage of the excellent deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

The course was in good condition but a stiff wind and fast greens made scoring very difficult and only 4 players scored over 30 pts.

Wolfpack Captain Triumphs at last Society Day, and time for the annual chest-beating known as Captain vs Vice - a competition usually won by the latter for some reason.

We travelled south to one of our favourite courses - Lo Romero. Ted Harris was the keeper of the trophy having been the victor in 2017.

The Captain arrived with grim determination etched on his forehead.

Teams picked, a change of format, a short walk to the first tee and the course was laid out before us. And what condition it was in,

absolutely magnificent. The fairways replete with spongy grass, bunkers overflowing with sand and greens manicured to perfection.

To cap it all, the weather was superb. A shaky start for a few, up the bank on the left hand side, and a nervous trip across the water on the second - but once we got into the swing of things, the golf flowed.

The pace was good and the golf was good too. At the halfway stage things were tight with little between the two teams, the Vice Captain just edging the competition. The Captain rallied his troops for a back nine push, the trophy already on his mantelpiece in his mind.

Arriving at the 18th, it was still tight and the tension got to some of the better players who generously gave their balls to the frogman.

Back to The Royal Oak for a meal and liquid refreshment and time for the eagerly await results. In third place was the pairing of Ray Phillips and Dave Pope with 32 points on a countback. In second was Nigel Cotton and the Captain with 34 and the overall winners were Bob Eno and Peter Palmer with 37 points.

Nearest the pin on the 5th was the aforementioned Peter Palmer and on the 15th was Ray Phillips. The team scores ? Well the Vice Captain’s team pressed to the end but the final result was a win by 1 point for the Captain.

The game this week on the 13th February was for a three man per team game of Texas Scramble competed for by 5 teams. Undoubted star of the show was reasonably new member Scotsman John Burke, who not only scooped both nearest the pin prizes but captained his team to a narrow win by 0.07 points. The team finishing second scored a magnificent 5 birdies but were defeated by a team playing consistently who were also helped by having a higher handicap.

Rockets Golf Society At Vistabella Short journey for our monthly home game at Vistabella with a very good turn out 24 players. Early start with a nip in the air but within the hour the sun was out and it started to warm up. The course had its winter coat on which meant we got 30 or 40 yards extra run.

Golf Course Review – Condado de Alhama This is the ‘signature’ course of the 'golf trail' designed by Jack Nicklaus himself and each hole is based on some of the holes from his favourite courses around the world and feels very much like a ‘links’ course with rolling fairways, fast undulating greens and knee high rough in places.

To find this golf course from Torrevieja exit the AP7 motorway at junction 790 (Los Alcazares Centro) and follow signs to Torre Pacheco and then to the A30 (Murcia-Cartagena) passing through El Jimenado until reaching the very large roundabout and take the exit for MU-602 (RM-2) to Fuente Alamo and continue ahead until reaching the RM-23 taking the exit for Mazarron and following signs for Condado de Alhama and once within the resort follow ‘golf’ signs.

As of the date of this review there is no clubhouse and the pro-shop is located in the ‘Al Kazar’ commercial centre which is located some distance from the 1st tee which is where you can hire and collect buggies, trolleys and hire clubs. The course has a good driving range with chipping and putting greens.

This is very much a true golfers course which is a genuine par 72 championship layout of 6,059 metres (6,6664 yards) from the yellow tees, which tests every aspect of your game but notably the accuracy of driving and distance control.

The par 3 holes are all approaching 200 yards in length and will need either a long iron or recovery club to find the putting surface.

For the longer hitters the par 5 holes are all approx 500 yards in length and reachable with a few good hits from the ‘screws’ with a long carry over water which awaits any errant shot that you may hit.

If you are having a good day and the driver is ‘behaving itself’ then

with a few strong tee shots there are a few birdie opportunities on a number of par 4 holes of less than 400 yards BUT a few stray drives will see your score rocket and it could also be costly in lost golf balls.

The Med Bar GS, El Raso Our first “fun day” outing of the year took us to our nearest golf course of Vistabella, the format for the day was to be 2 ball Texas scramble with combined handicaps. If that was not daunting enough for the high handicapper, we paired them off with the low handicappers. As I have said it was supposed to be a fun day and boy did we have some fun! To add to the enjoyment, the majority of the society had not played the new 8 holes but after completing their rounds, all commented on how much they had enjoyed it Results for this outing: 1st pairing of Ray Muttocks and Martin Morgan with combined score of 36 points. San Miguel Golf Society at Hacienda Riquelme On a bright and sunny St Valentines day, thirty two members turned out to compete for the Colin Arkly Memorial Trophy at Hacienda Riquelme. The golf course was in excellent condition, the greens were firm and very slick from the start and got progressively quicker through the day.

The spear grass lined fairways, a moderate breeze and some tricky pin positions kept scoring honest for the day. After making a green in regulation most members succumbed to the odd three or four putt, or worse, saw their ball roll off the green assisted by the breeze.

On Thursday 15th February Eurogolf played a stableford off the blocks in glorious sunshine.

Onto the Singles and Bullie Dave just couldn’t get double 1 so Hen’s Teeth Chisholm got a point back for their team. ‘Get ‘Orf’ Preston then pulled one back with a 32 check out.

Adrian Buitekaht and Dave Shepherd rallied away for over half hour until Adrian finally nailed the double 1.

Captain Carlos Montes’ highest check-out of the night (40) won him his single (and MOTM) vs Mike Tierney.

In the penultimate leg, Freddie Salters played Hen’s Teeth Henni who won her game on double 1 giving her team their third and final point and crowning her WOTM for the Toothy Cluckers. Junction Jaguars v Hub Hyenas 1-11 With Hilda awaiting a new hip, Liz Cowan at home with a broken foot, Toddy on her travels and ‘Sneeze’ Green living up to her nickname, we were lucky it wasn’t a whitewash! However, the 7 remaining Jags rallied round and de Lacy’s 92, 85, 125 and D16, first dart at a finish, in her singles against John Williams managed to swipe their one and only leg. However, is was team mate and WOTM, Lesley Eagles, that shone for the Jaguars, scoring 100, 114 in her triples and pairs and then an ‘amazing’ 60, 100, 120, 118, 50 against Joe Miller in the final singles match which Lelly just couldn’t finish it off.

The Jags played well, especially in the pairs and singles and the result doesn’t justify their combined efforts (7 x 100+ scores).

MOTM for the Hyenas was deservedly awarded to Johnnie Eyre who finished all 4 legs he featured in and almost had a 15-darter (137, 125, 121) in his singles against Lisa Ivill. The Hyenas achieved 9 x 100+ scores. The Hub will top Division A after the split having been unbeaten in the first half of the season. They are 3 points clear of their nearest contenders, el Capitan, so look likely to scoop the top prize again this season.

Narrow win ends a difficult week for Torry

On

a grey hibernal Sunday afternoon, as Torry welcomed 2nd bottom Monforte to the Vicente Garcia Stadium, hoping to improve on the 2-2 draw they achieved last October, there seems to be more being written about the ‘off’ field situation at the club rather than their chase for points in an attempt to get a dreadful season back into some semblance of normality.

Without a win since mid-November, Torry find themselves perilously close to the Preferente division relegation zone. Monforte meanwhile were even further in the mire, sitting 2nd to bottom, some 14 points behind their opponents.

But, with an ever growing list of youth team players in the Torry side, league positions were of little consequence.

The game itself seemed relatively unimportant when compared to the off-field wranglings going on behind the scenes, and there was even some confusion with that as spectators continued to drift in well after the 4.30 kick off, blaming the club Twitter feed which showed a 5pm start.

The consolation was that they didn’t miss a lot with very little action during the opening period.

SAMM AGM 2018 The AGM of the Sailing Association Mar Menor was help at Las Claras Social Center on February 14th, the 11th year of the organisations existence.

2017 was recorded as a fairly stable year with membership close to the 2016 figure plus good income levels from the 100 Club, Social Activities and Racing which resulted in a comfortable surplus at year end. There were year end reports presented by the Commodore, Treasurer, Secretary and the other officers to add detail to the bare figures.

The Treasurer Peter Ewers confirmed he was stepping down after 7 years in the position and his replacement Martin Beenham was unanimously elected as were the other Committee members who were restanding unopposed.

An effort from Juanjo just prior to the interval brought yet another ‘top drawer’ save from the Torry keeper to keep the interval scoreline at 0-0 with the hope of better things to come in the second period.

With two potential investors watching the game alongside the Club President there was just a little more to cheer for the fans with Corea testing Puerto in the Monforte goal in an opening exchange.

The half time talk was certainly having an effect with the home side growing in confidence as the game progressed. Still missing is the confidence and the flair, which in view of recent form is hardly a surprise but the battling qualities were there for all to see as Torry began to get on top.

A low drive into the goal area by substitute Santi almost had Gonza slice the ball into his own net but then, as the ball broke up field, a save at the other end saw Marcos foiled by Manu when the

visiting forward looked odds on to score.

It was all action at this stage with Manu Amores next to screw a good opportunity high and wide but then, on 73 minutes, a run by new boy Calderon, in which he weaved past two defenders, saw the former Novelda man hit a rasping drive low into the Monforte net to lift the spirits of the Torry crowd and reward the midfielder with his first goal in 3 starts.

Chances for Beltran and Santi could have added to the scoreline but with the visitors providing little threat the home side easily saw the remaining minutes out to secure the three points.

Next weekend’s opponents are Benferri, just north of Orihuela and another team that is scrapping for points at the wrong end of the table.

Montesinos inflict damaging defeat on leaders Horadada CD

Montesinos travelled to UD Horadada on Saturday, the joint league leaders, and came away with all three points in a match that was most certainly not for the faint-hearted.

This was what we used to call a typical blood and thunder match or a typical Cup tie with neither side giving an inch, played at a very high tempo and both sides going all out to win.

The home side started the better of the two sides, forcing a double save from Dani then Alex in the first couple of minutes.

A Horadada “goal” was disallowed due to offside. Signs of things to come maybe? But it was Monte who went closest first with the division´s top scorer, Vazquinho, almost giving them the lead, but the sides went into the half time break all square although just before the half-time whistle there was a skirmish on the touchline which spilled onto the spectators.

The local police were on hand to defuse the situation very quickly.

No sooner had the second half started when Vazquinho took full advantage of sloppy control by the Horadada centre half, to score his 18th goal of the season from an acute angle much to the delight of the travelling supporters.

It is fair to say that from that moment onwards, the home side threw everything they had at Montesinos. But thanks to a little luck (Horadada hit both the post and the cross bar), some excellent goalkeeping from Dani and some excellent defending, including a couple of goal-line clearances, CD Montesinos managed to hold out. In fact

This latest victory leaves CD Montesinos on 33 points and on target to achieve enough points to be at this level for another season and depending how results go elsewhere this weekend, the could end the week in fifth position.

Next weekend CD Montesinos “entertain” Alicante side CF Barrio San Gabriel at home. The game will be played on Sunday, 25th of February with a 5.00pm kick-off.
