San Miguel Council order work to stop on controversial fencing

S

an Miguel de Salinas council has stopped the completion of a controversial fence that runs along the municipal road Camino de la Balsa, that links the urban area with the urbanisation de Las Filipinas and residences in the Orihuela Costa, after complaints by la Asociación de Vecinos San Miguel Arcángel.

The works were being carried

out by the owners of the land on either side of the road for a distance of about a kilometre but San Miguel Arcángel argue that the fencing eliminates the hard shoulder and thereby reduces the width of the road “to extremely dangerous limits,” which completely contrasts with the width as it gets much closer to San Miguel.

The road is a public road, and the only route through the interior of the municipality connecting it with the urbanisations of San Miguel and Orihuela-Costa. It is used by thousands of drivers, despite its narrow and winding path, that already makes it quite dangerous. In fact many serious accidents have taken place along the road in recent years, evident of the many family homages that adorn the sides of the road, so narrowing it even further will increase the danger for motorists significantly.

Since 2010 it is also one of the fastest routes for people driving to the La Zenia shopping area from the region’s interior of the region.

The Councillor for Town Planning, Sergio Correas, explained that the City Council has acted for two reasons. The actions taken by the owners are in breach of the licenses that were granted by the council which has also called on the Generalitat for further guidance as the road runs through the cattle track of the Colada de Sierra Escalona which is determined in law as a livestock route.

Current legislation establishes a width of 20 to 70 metres for these rural roads, and a minimum of ten when they are not formally defined. The councillor explained that one of the municipal proposals is to improve the capacity of this road and to even provide it with a bicycle lane, and that as legislation includes the use of livestock trails the City Council will not authorise the work until the Generalitat make their official decision.

Rural crimes reduced by 18.7% during 2017

80 people registered for the course from the national police, local, regional and the Civil Guard

he Government delegate in the Valencian Community, Juan Carlos Moragues, said on Wednesday that thanks to the effectiveness of the Guardia Civil’s ROCA teams thefts I rural areas were reduced by 18.7 in 2017 with respect to the previous year.

He made the claim during his opening address at the IV Training Seminar 'Safety in the field' held by the Government together with the Ministry of Agriculture and Health of the Generalitat, the Comandancia of the Civil Guard of Valencia and Cooperatives Agro-alimentary of the Valencian Community The day, attended by a number of different police organisations, consisted of lectures given by a health inspector, a food scientist, the Commander of the Civil Guard in Calpe, the chief inspector of the National Police and also of the Local Police of Castellón.

There was also a practical activity during the afternoon on the handling of fruits and vegetables in the field and features likely to cause suspicion.

Moragues said, "There has been great interest in the course with 80 registrations from the national police, local, regional and Civil Guards. This con-

ference will be beneficial in better tackling and preventing crimes in the countryside.”

The Delegate highlighted a number of the successful operations that took place in 2017.

In Operation Traza, 23 people were arrested (Spanish and Moroccan) in the town of El Verger for the crime of document forgery involving the sale of 424,060 kilos of oranges.

Four people were arrested, for theft of 2,500 kilos of grapes in several farms Aspe and Novelda with the recovery of 800 kilos of grapes.

Operation Iwasaki saw the arrest of one person, in the town of San Miguel de Salinas, for three scams in cheating farmers by agreeing to purchase 400,000 euros worth of mandarins without paying for them.

Operation Isaacnar resulted in a man of Spanish nationality being arrested in for falsifying documents ??in order to purchase 201,260 kilos of oranges.

Moragues reiterated the importance of promoting the culture of denunciation by farmers as they are the people who "are on the ground, who know their farms, the roads, the owners of the adjoining farms,"he said.

Plan for Municipal Sports facilities on the Orihuela Costa

embers of the FAOC Board, the FederaciĂłn de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa-Alicante, along with delegates from schools, sports clubs and other associations, met with council representatives on Tuesday, to discuss the Municipal Sports Plan and in particular, the existing needs, development and progress, of sports facilities for residents of the Orihuela Costa. The meeting took place in the Playa Flamenca Town Hall.

FAOC produced a document with their first summary of needs to be met in Orihuela Costa, which the association will be completing in the coming weeks.

Although the councillor for sports was not at the meeting he did send along his deputy, Emilio MartĂ­nez. The two initiators of the plan also attended the meeting together with local councillors.

For the same reason, neither was the question about the funding for sports investment on the Orihuela Costa addressed so it is still not known what proportion of the municipal budget, said to be 132,000 euro, was allocated to the Coast.

The ultimate goal of the plan is to provide Orihuela Costa with the necessary sports facilities for all age groups, including, exercise machines for the elderly and the provision of a Municipal gymnasium.

For this purpose, those in attendance were asked to provide information and suggestions on sports practices that are applicable to all age groups. They were asked also to relate their experiences and knowledge of the current demand for sports facilities on the coast.

However, one important item not addressed was the reduction of charges at the CDM, Centro Deportivo Municipal, in Playa Flamenca, that had been requested by FAOC and associates, as it was not included in the agenda of the meeting.

The council has taken a census of all existing facilities in Orihuela Costa, to which they have a commitment to improve and expand, which, they indicated, they are already doing.

They also say that they are going to study the FAOC request to open the sports facilities in local schools, in order to enable their use by residents in after-school hours.

FAOC said that they will consolidate and summarise the needs of all sports facilities that have been identified by their associations in their respective areas of action, and will submit them to the Department of Sports, so that the enhancement of the sports facilities on the coast can be improved to better suit the needs of Orihuela Costa residents.

The Municipal Plan had been presented by the mayor and the councillor for sport in Orihuela a day earlier at which he said that his intention is that the plan be agreed by all political groups in the municipality, because "sport is for everyone, it must meet the needs of all residents ".

Former San Fulgencio head says he is not responsible for school deficit

T

he former headmaster of the José María Manresa Junior School in San Fulgencio, Jesus Pastor, has denied any responsibility for the financial deficit found in the school accounts that has been revealed by a recent audit.

According to his lawyer, the shortfall of 39,104 euros is due to mistakes made after he retired from his post in August 2015. The former director said that he has not committed any irregularity in the 32 years that he has been in charge.

Pastor says that there has been a chain of errors leading to

him being put in a position that he does not deserve.

He says that there are "arithmetical and account errors" in the audit report that were not corrected by the administration despite his warning, and that the period alluded to is for all of 2015, while he retired in August of that year.

Therefore, the closure of the account was done by the new management and not by him, so they will have to take responsibility.

Pastor also provided a bank statement that reflects that when he left his post, the balance in the school's account was not 54,803.33 euros, as reported in the financial report, but 62,552.91 euros.

Civil Protection want first aid training for all in Los Alcázares The Civil Protection Training Plan for this year in Los Alcazares will provide first aid courses for workers in shops and catering establishments across the municipality in order to improve the quality of tourism services.

"Our Civil Protection units are amongst the quickest to respond in the Region. They are able to attend the scene of an accident or an emergency in just a few minutes but in saving lives it is the seconds that count so we want traders, hoteliers and shopkeepers to be better prepared," said the councillor, Anastasio Bastida .

There will also be an opportunity for housewives to receive training in first aid, as well as schoolchildren and members of clubs and sports associations with the common goal of being able to reduce risks in an emergency and even being able to save lives.

SAMU attended to 1,478 people throughout the year, most in the summer. There were 564 attendances in August compared to 76 in February.

Finally the Emergency Coordination Centre received 9,610 calls, mainly to request health care or attendance of the Police.

New flyover for Pilar despite CHS delays P ilar de la Horadada council is to build a flyover at the western end of Calle Mayor where the road leaves the built up area heading toward Campoverde.

The place where the works will be carried out are at the point where the canalisation of the rambla began in 1996. It runs for a stretch of about three kilometres emptying into the sea in Torre de la Horadada, as shown on the municipal website.

The Councilor for Infrastructure, Francisco Albaladejo, said that with no positive response from the Confederaciรณn Hidrogrรกfica del Segura (CHS), the council has decided to take steps of its own to resolve the problem of road closures during heavy rain, that regularly force that stretch of Calle Mayor to close to traffic.

He said that the situation was especially serious during the period of intense rainfall recorded last year, adding that the municipality has been asking the CHS for years extend the rambla by one more kilometre, from its current starting place adjacent to the main road, across to near the Ikomar Stadium football field.

The council feel that by taking these measures the floods that affect this part of the town would be resolved, but it is estimated that the work would cost about six million euros.

What the consistory now aim to do is to lower the level of the road to ensure that the water flows down the rambla towards the sea and does not deviate into the town centre. Vehicles will cross over a flyover that will be configured as a kind of bridge.

The project has a budget of 616,503 euros and is already out to tender with a closing date in mid March.

Snr Albaladejo said that the works will be financed from the 2016 treasury surplus, money that is available because it was not spent at that time. Whilst the work is being carried out traffic will have to be diverted for a period of about eight months.

Government pledge to give back British expats the right to vote The government publishes its response to the consultation on the votes for life policy statement and commits to deliver a lifelong vote to British expats.

The government has restated its commitment to ending the current 15 year time limit on British expats registering as overseas electors.

As well as removing a time limit on the right to vote for UK citizens living abroad, the government intends to enfranchise any British expats who was previously resident or registered to vote in the UK. This is part of the government’s wider ambition to strengthen the foundation of democracy and continually increase voter registration by ensuring every voter’s voice is heard.

Combined, these changes will mean millions of UK citizens overseas will be eligible to register to vote.

British expats – under existing laws – have the lowest level of voter registration of any group.

The government published the policy statement “A democracy that works for everyone: British citizens overseas” in October 2016 asking for views on its detailed plans to introduce votes for life. It set out how it would scrap the rule that bars British citizens who have lived abroad for more than 15 years from voting in UK Parliamentary Elections, as set out in the government’s manifesto.

The response to the consultation about the votes for life policy statement will be published on GOV.UK today, ahead of the second reading debate in the House of Commons on 23 February of Glyn Davies MP Private Members’ Overseas Electors Bill.

Man breaks both ankles as he runs from car fire How unlucky can you get?

Pity the poor driver of a car in Callosa de Segura on Tuesday who was driving along without a care in the world as his car exploded into flames on Calle Pilar.

Having got out of the car and escaped the blaze he might have thought himself lucky, but it certainly wasn’t his day as during his getaway he fell down a 3 metre deep ravine and broke both his ankles.

Six firefighters attended the blaze from Orihuela and while four of them tackled the blaze the other two rescued the driver from the gulley.

The man was then transferred to the Vega Baja Hospital where his injuries were treated.

Increase in numbers unemployed during January According to data released on Wednesday by the Valencian Employment and Training Service (SERVEF), when compared to the same month 12 months earlier, figures show an increase in the number of unemployed in the Vega Baja of 41 people, taking the total number of unemployed to 27,808.

So we suggest that nothing is certain, especially the currency markets. Protect yourself at all times, don’t be greedy (foolish) and do seek the calm advice of a currency broker when transferring large amounts of money abroad.

Not what the doctor ordered for Aguamarina Seniors Many Aguamarina residents left disappointed Exercise is important for good health at any age, and seniors are no exception so when the residents of Aguamarina and Cabo Roig saw the local play area being prepared to take a Calisthenics Park many were very excited.

The holes were dug and subsequently filled with concrete so it seemed pretty likely that not too far down the line the equipment would arrive, after which the park would undoubtedly be filled with seniors who had discovered a new found enthusiasm for keeping fit.

We were all looking forward to the imminent arrival of equipment that we hoped would be revitalise our lifestyles and our fitness regime, and equipment suitable for the age group that makes up the vast majority of the residents living in the area.

Huddled in their small groups the residents spoke of a ski walker, lateral pull down, leg press trainers, chest press and perhaps even an outdoor bike or two, collectively ‘aparatos de gimnasia biosaludable,’ as is is known in Spain, so imagine their disappointment when the council unveiled a piece of equipment that is nowhere near to their needs.

Supplied by Ludomaquina of Murcia what we now have is a synergy system, a climbing frame, ropes and monkey bars, gymnastic rings, equipment that targets strength building and muscular endurance to a recommended maximum age of

50 years. So not a lot of use for the majority of people who are resident on the coast, and yet another example of a lack of thought by the municipal council!

Ten days after its installation it is being used, however, by the occasional individual, but more as a climbing frame by young children, so it is serving some useful purpose I suppose, unfortunately though, not that for which it was quite probably intended.

The councillor for the coast, Luisa Boné, seemed very proud when she posed in front of the equipment last week stating that “Soon we will install more of this kind of equipment on the seafront promenades in other urbanisations". I would suggest that before she does, she carries out a little more research and provides the people with equipment that they actually want, which at a cost of 6,600 euros is unfortunately not the case in Aguamarina.

Busy times at U3A Last weekend proved to be a busy time fora lot of members of the Torrevieja U3A. A large number of the Strollers had a lovely walk along the front at Cabo Roig in the beautiful sunshine with stops for refreshments along the way. Another enjoyable day, as usual.

This was followed on the Sunday by a good turnout of stalwarts determined to have a good session at Petanca despite the cold windy afternoon. The sun came out as we finished to we were able to have our social gathering in the bar in the warm. The weekend was completed on the Monday evening with an energetic session at 10 pin bowling. Over 30 people turned up.

This coming Saturday sees the first of, hopefully, many quizzes which we are running. There is a buffet meal with wine included and a raffle. Originally the target was 80 people but the demand was so great that it has been stretched to fit in another 10.torr U3A Members are reminded that the AGM will take place at the CMO building, as usual, on 26th.Feb. The cafeteria is regrettably still out of action so you will need to bring your own refreshments yet again. Hopefully this problem will be resolved soon.

Three new walkways for San Roque The Torrevieja council will install three new adapted walkways in the bathing area at San Roque. The pathways, which will be available before the summer period, will be installed by the beach services company, Recreativos Acuáticos Horadada.

The councillor of beaches, Javier Manzanares, has outlined the proposed improvements to San Roque residents, having also met with the local representative who helped to select the best location for the three walkways.

"This is a commitment to the residents that we have been promising for some years now," said Manzanares, who added that "this year we want to get them installed having fully considered the requests in terms of location and length. The measurements have now been taken and the contractors have inspected the area, and we are sure that the work will be done this year."

The technical meeting took place on Wednesday. "We have already met with the residents of San Roque on several occasions," said Manzanares adding that "today has been the most technical, and perhaps the most productive of all. This summer San Roque will have their three new adapted catwalks ".

The latest fund-raising night at Quesada Fish & Chips was another sell out. With Woody providing the entertainment, tickets were all gone well before the event.

After five and a half years of constant fund-raising, the organisers are taking a much needed break until the summer. For this reason the 1,156 euros raised on the night was split between their two favourite charities, The Children's Care Home in Torrevieja and Stroke Association Spain.

Avoiding Corruption in Government Contracts

R

ecently we have seen the ex-mayor of Torrevieja released from prison following his conviction for cor-

ruption.

Many politicians from various different parties and contracting companies all over Spain have and are being investigated by the national police or the Guardia Civil for corruption over municipal contracts that have gone out to tender.

There are many cases in the courts at the moment and many more that have not even reached the courts yet due to the very long legal process in Spain. The contracts, that are at the centre of these investigations are quite often worth very large amounts of money.

The most recent ongoing investigation and court case reported in Orihuela Costa involves the former Green party government supported by the PSOE and the lucrative multi-million-euro beach-bar contract.

This contract could, without apology, be renewed by the current PP-C’s government at Easter when it is due to expire. However, due to the overwhelming evidence that has been made public about political corrup-

tion, it was seen as prudent to put the beach bar contract outto-tender again without some of the highly controversial elements that discriminated against all of the companies tendering for the current contract, except one.

In the opinion of most political commentators, Louise Boné (C’s), the councillor responsible for beaches, made the correct decision not to renew the existing controversial contract and instead put it out to contract by Easter 2018. Orihuela Costa has eleven beaches, nine of them boast the prestigious European blue flag.

There will quite likely be eleven beach bars or chiringuitos, one on each beach.

The beach-bar contract also includes sunbeds, chairs and umbrellas as well as water toys of all description. This is a multimillion-euro business and unfortunately this huge contract could attract bidders who will not act in an ethical way. Big money contracts can encourage corruption problems.

As yet, it is not clear what conditions will be required by the town hall and maybe some early information would help a wide participation in this contract bid, why wait until Easter to publish minimum requirements for this very important touristic service.

Louise Boné should strongly consider

dividing the contract down to a beach by beach bid rather than companies and individuals bidding on all eleven beaches together. This will be fairer, less open to corruption and increase the likelihood of a top-class service. It would also make it easier for smaller companies to operate the beach bars and would in general, raise the standard of the services offered on each beach. Naturally it could be possible for companies to bid on more than one beach.

The most important aspect of the eleven different beach bar contracts will be the reduction in the incentive for any corrupt individual or company to influence the outcome of the bidding contest. Mafia-like political corruption tends to happen on a large-scale business operation rather than in the smaller, less profitable ones. There are greedy people everywhere.

There are a few politicians who are honest public-spirited people, who have a great desire to serve the citizens but the best of them seem to be pushed to one side. Others are not so honest and have few scruples when it comes to lining their own pockets.

The Plea to Louise Boné today is to break this gold-mine down into manageable pieces, one contract per beach. If there are some unprofitable beaches then combine it with a high profit beach. Publish the main or minimum requirements in advance of the contract bidding process. Keep corruption in public contracts to a minimum.

I am often told that Brits on holiday like nothing better than to get out of bed long before their all-inclusive breakfast has even hit the frying pan, and to chase outside to the swimming pool in their boxer shorts or bras (or possibly both) in order to place a vivid Union flag towel on the sunbed of their choice. It is even more exciting if there is a mad competitive dash with the Germans, with Brits gaining immense satisfaction if they reach their prized position first.

Why, oh why is one of the tour companies determined to ruin such jingoistic pleasures with the introduction of a ‘book and pay before you arrive’ sunbed option when booking a holiday in the Canary Islands. For the princely sum of 22 euros per person per week, potential holidaymakers can view a virtual image of their choice of sunbed, together with its ideal position close to the swimming pool, bar or most importantly, the toilets, from their home in Mansfield before even stepping on the plane. Gone are those heady days of the mad dash before breakfast.

One thing to be thankful for, I guess, is that Ryanair will not be in charge of the seating allocations. Just imagine it, the entire family split up and lost in various dark corners of the pool area. Oh yes, I nearly forget to mention, the only reason for this change of sunbed

Disappointing week in the SABA Leagues as in the Enterprise Division the Apollos away at Vistabella Albatrosses gained a single point from the rink of Dave Davies with Florence and Mike Edwards who managed a draw. Much better result for the Pioneers at home to league leaders Mazarron Mariners in the Voyager Division winning on four rinks and drawing another thereby picking up 11 points to their opponents 3 and winning by a shots margin of 137-72 thereby closing the gap at the top of the table. Winners for the Pioneers were Sue Mahomet, Ken Stringfellow and John Porter 38-8,Ron Sheldon, Barbara Cooper and Alan Mawer 24-12.Other wins came from Wendy Ralph, Fay Beattie and Rab Logan and Hilary Clarke, Alan Ralph and Vic Mahomet.

In the The Fed 4’s the Hoopoes travelled to Horadada and picked up three points winning on 1 rink and drawing another. Horadada picked up the points for the overall shots by 55-48. Winners for the Hoopoes came from Doug Beattie, Jim Eastwood, Norman Adcroft and Dave Blackie 20-18 whilst a draw was recorded by Ken Stringfellow, Rod Edgerton, Bill Jordan and Fay Beattie.

The Winter League team at home to La Marina and found the going difficult just picking up 1 point from a draw gained by Pat Reilly with Bill and Sue Jordan and George Richardson. The overall shots difference was 69-90.

The Blues were at home to San Miguel Cougars in the B Division in their re-arranged fixture and lost by 113 shots to 79 winning on one rink that of Sheila Chorley, Rob Heath and John Ball by14-13 getting the team two match point. On Friday the Blues were at Emerald Isle Outlaws and lost a close match by 122 shots to 106 picking up 6 points. Winning rinks were Sheila Chorley with Irene Mangan and Alex Morrice winning 17-11,Joy and Brian Gardiner with Jean Cooper winning 25-22 and Dawn and John Taylor with Brian Harman winning 18-16.

The Golds, in the C Division, were at San Luis to play their rearranged match against the Pumas which last week fell fowl to the heavy rainfall last Friday. The Golds had to call upon their full squad as six players were involved in a Winter League match. This did not deter the team and the remaining squad members achieved a superb 14-0 victory. It is unfair to mention anybody in particular that played, as this was a squad effort by everyone. However, captain Ron Sheldon wishes to thank Jean James who stepped in at the last moment to ensure the team had a full compliment. The overall shots score was 132-81, which helps in the Golds, challenge towards the top of the table. Following up on Friday another good result with a 129 shots to 80 home win against Greenlands Cedars picking op 10 points to their opponents 4. Best winners for the Golds were Hilary Clarke, Ken Stringfellow and Vic Mahomet winners by 27-8 whilst Gary Randall, Ron Sheldon and Alan Mawer won 26-10. Other winners were Dot and Joe Kocsis with Rab Logan 25-10 and Barbara Cooper, Tony Campbell and Johnnie Ryder who won 22-13.

In the Southern league we had a home game against Vistabella.

While we managed to win the game by 120 shots to 110 we only picked up 6 points. This was due to good wins by our two successful rinks of Colin Simpson, Bryan Eatough and Roy Thompson 36 – 5, Irene Graham, John Goddard and Terry Hucknall 26 – 11 Before this game we had been lying in second place in the league so this home result was somewhat of a disappointment.

On Tuesday we played as Fed 4’s match at home against La Siesta Hoopoes. A better result this time with a 55 to 48 shots win and a points score of 5 to 3.The rink scores were Irene Graham, Carol Linehan, John Goddard and Fred Trigwell 25 – 16, Linda Hier, Les Davis, Wayne Osguthorpe and Jeff Hier 12 – 12, Pat Patton, Dennis Wade, Jack Linehan and Brian Patton 18 – 20 The highlight of the game was a hot-shot won by our rink led by Fred Trigwell. Well done as this was the second from one of our rinks so far this year.

We had a bye in the Southern league so we look forward to resuming next week against La Siesta Blues.

Due to one of the participants going to The Commonwealth games in Australia soon our mixed pairs final was held recently. In a very close game it was won by 1 shot by Margaret and Ron Odell over Irene Graham and Peter Davis. Well done to the O’Dells who will now represent the Club in the Champion of Champions event in April.

It was a nail biting finish to get the overall shots with one rink still to finish and shots at 106 across. El Rancho Bowls Club Saturday found the Mustangs playing their re-arranged fixture at emerald Isle against the Cavaliers; it was a good match against a strong team and an excellent result, though odd bowlers may have been a little disappointed in their play, though we all get it wrong now and again. ill Young was a bowler, an umpire, a coach and a Yorkshireman. Even so he always found time to talk and this talk was mainly about bowls but also about his other loves, Boxing and Rugby League.

Bill had two periods as a member of the Monte Mar Club, the first being in 2007 when he joined from La Marina. He stayed at the club until 2011 when he joined the club at Greenlands for a year, again returning to Monte Mar in 2012.

Whilst at our club Bill was the recipient of several trophies in the club competitions both at as an individual and a part of teams. He has several entries on the club honours board as testament to his undoubted bowling ability.

Bill was also part of the winning trips in the SABA 3-day trips weekend in 2008. He participated in many tournaments organised by other clubs both on the Costa Blanca and also in the Mojacar area. During the last few months Bill was in winning teams at both San Luis and Bonalba clubs in their respective tournaments.

As many fellow bowlers will know, Bill was very forthright in his views but this was because he was very passionate about the sport of bowling.

Over his time whilst bowling in Spain he had competed at every level and had a record he could be proud of. At our club Bill assisted in coaching new bowlers and guiding those who were not so new when they needed help. He was also a member of the club committee at one time. He also undertook umpiring requirements when needed and looked after the club umpires kit. He would always offer assistance to all club members.

Our thoughts go out to the family To his friends on the bowling scene, He will be hard to replace at Monte Mar Especially with his desire to win, His attitude was always the same, You got what it said on the tin.

Lo Crispin Golf Society at Altorreal LThe Society played an Am Am stableford team game today at Altorreal. 23 members and 1 guest took to the fairways to play this format of the game, in which the best 2 stableford scores in a fourball are recorded and the Team with the best score over 18 holes are the winners etc.

The fairways and greens at Altorreal are generally in good condition, and this day was no exception. Most golfers commented that the Greens were very fast. Although the sun shone throughout the day, it remained cold all day, but nobody complained too much! After the game, as usual we returned to the Lo Crispin Tavern, where we were supplied with Tapas and a warm welcome.

The husband and wife team of Brian and Sue Smith, along with Adrian Aspbury and Bill Croft proved to be the winners on the day.

As usual we had a fantastic attendance for our annual Captain’s Charity Day at La Serena Golf. This year’s charity was HAH (Help at Home), chosen by Captain Paul Hamlin and what a very worthy cause it is! It was a great day’s golf with some superb performances but the real winners were HAH, with a donation from us of 400 euros after the game.

Massive thanks to everyone involved in organising, donating and helping another successful San Javier Golf Society event, with special mentions being due to our committee and to La Serena Golf Club for their help and generosity. Las Ramblas Golf Society On a day when Katarina Witt, John Curry and Robin Cousins, amongst others, would have been at home on the Las Ramblas greens (not merely slick but icily fast and unstoppable), 35 members and 8 guests took on the perfectly described marmite course (you either love it or hate it) of Las Ramblas. The majority probably hated it as they trudged up the clubhouse steps. A cold strong breeze didn’t help in the battle against what is a complicated course, but the greens were verging on unplayable for many, the most important element reflected in the scoring. Only the ever-consistent Darren Hancock neared playing to his handicap (6) with 34 points, the next best being Scotty Phillips (16) with 32. A special mention for Russell Bailey’s attempt to the 12th, a long par 3, where he ended up a mere 6 inches from the pin, and for Carmel McCann, the only lady playing, who won her category.

Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions.

Golf Course Review – Roda Roda Golf is yet another of those courses designed by Dave Thomas of ‘The Belfry’ fame. The natural terrain in this area is actually ‘flat’ so the designer has managed a minor miracle by producing a golf course that gives the impression of ‘rolling’ countryside while incorporating the use of the local ‘Levante’ sea winds.

To find this course travelling on the AP7 motorway from either the North (direction Cartagena) or the South (direction Alicante) leave the motorway at junction 786 which is signposted Los Alcazares (Norte) and at the large roundabout take the exit to Los Alcazarez and this road runs for approx 1km in a southerly direction and parallel to the AP7 which is to your right. At the next island turn right towards Roda (F27) and you will go over the AP7 and the course can be seen to your right and the entrance to the Golf Resort is also to your right after approx 700 yards.

The excellent and modern clubhouse includes a lower level entrance complete with impressive water feature and an upper veranda area giving views over the practise area and the 9th green plus excellent changing, toilet and shower facilities and a bar and restaurant which have food and beverage but at resort prices.

The pro-shop is large and is one of the best stocked golf shops that I have seen at any golf course in Murcia and with staff that are always welcoming and efficient.

This is not the longest course in Murcia but is appealing to the eye and with accommodatingly wide fairways just seems a pleasure to play.

The course itself reminds me of the Jack Nicklaus designed St Mellion course in Cornwall in the UK with rolling fairways flanked by gently sloping hillocks and banks.

The signature hole is the 7th which is a par 3 of 151 metres or 166 yards (yellow tees) to an ‘island’ green and usually into the prevailing wind will be a long iron or hybrid recovery club for the majority of golfers. Without the wind this course would be ‘there for the taking’ by the better golfers amongst you because there are numerous short par 4’s of little more than 300 metres or 330 yards (particularly on the back nine) and the par 5’s are all reachable, at times with relatively short clubs. However there lies the ‘rub’ because there are very few days where the ‘Levante’ wind doesn’t blow, particularly in the late afternoon.

The 4th hole is a good example of this because at 380 metres or 418

yards (yellow tees) and uphill it always plays significantly longer than the scorecard states BUT the downwind 5th hole of 436 metres or 480 yards (yellow tees) always play shorter than its card length. The 18th hole pretty well summarises this golf course because the par 5 hole is 454 metres or 499 yards (yellow tees) but usually downwind, the green is in reach but is protected by a large lake to the front and side while the green is relatively narrow from front to back and is a test of the proverb that ‘fortune favours the brave’.

Golfers of lesser ability will find this golf course ideal because the generously wide fairways and lack of deep rough allow for a greater margin of error although take care on the holes where water hazards exist. This golf course is always in excellent and manicured condition with large greens with a good putting surface and should be on your agenda if you plan a golfing trip to Murcia.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society Having just returned from the Arctic Wastes of the UK, I was quite unprepared for the similar conditions faced by the 18 members competing in the Team Joker competition on the 6th February, which accounted for the lower than normal score of the winning teams, as the ball did not seem to travel well in the atmosphere. Fortunately, conditions improved for the 2nd nine holes, which allowed for better scoring.

Junction Jackals v Hub Hyenas (5-7) Even halfway through the season, this was a match the Jackals simply had to win. Two points adrift meant a victory would send them up to joint first - a loss and the Hyenas are 4 points clear and proba-

bly uncatchable.

All started well for the Jackals who jumped into a two leg lead. In the second leg Andy Trotter, Mark Todd and Lee Maiden completed a 21 dart 701 finish with Lee leading the way with 100 and 139. The third treble saw the same players back at the oche - this time however John Eyre, Paul Durrant and Joe Miller exacted revenge - all three scoring ton-plus scores.

The doubles went the way of the Hyenas with Lee Maiden’s 180 being the main highlight. So three all at half time and all to play for.

The draw brought Lee and Hyena’s captain Simon Williams together in the first leg. The way Lee had been playing the home side were hopeful but Simon had other ideas. After falling behind a 140 brought him right back into it and double 10 sealed the win.

Mark Todd then beat Paul Durrant with steady if unspectacular scoring. Four 85’s on the bounce gave Mark a shot at double top and he took it first go. John Eyre beat Andy Trotter in a high scoring game so it was 5 - 4 to the Hyenas and still all to play for.

Landlord Andy Gildea stepped up next and quickly fell some way behind to Bob Townsend but he kept plodding away and suddenly a ton gave him a glimmer of hope. He took it with both hands finishing on 73 - T19 & D16. Five all. Nigel Elvery then lost to Joe Miller - the Hyenas had the draw guaranteed and 1 point was not what the home side needed.

The Hyenas secured their win when John Williams beat Phil de Lacy in the last leg.

Thanks to all for a great night and some great darts - 24 scores of 100 or more. .Special thanks to the Jackal’s scorer, Nige, who took some very unnecessary criticism for volunteering to score. He won’t be appearing at Ally Pally anytime soon but he does a great job for us in the fun league.

Thursday Club Tennis Celebration at Campoamor [golf] The social tennis club that plays every Thursday from 3-5pm at the Campoamor golf club, enjoyed a great night out recently, to celebrate the 2017 season. The club session involves organised social doubles play every week throughout the year. At the end of each session the winning player receives points equal to the number of players in attendance, whilst 2nd place receives half of that sum.

The top 3 players for 2017 were 1st Graham Bunker, 2nd Rob Stacey, 3rd Natalie Tissier.

Last years winner Rob, was beaten into second place by newcomer, Graham and another newcomer, Natalie, placed 3rd.

Club coach, Steve Durie, would like to thank all of those who have supported the sessions and for those who attended a very enjoyable evening.

Club sessions are also run on Wednesday 11-1 and Sunday 10-12 at Campoamor and on Monday mornings, Steve runs an adult group coaching session in Almoradi.

Rosa's dominated the doubles taking the first two:- Carlos Montes D20, Alan Preston D4 for Rosa's but then Peter (Tufty) Ayres grabbing D19 for Porters.

After the break, Rosa's took a commanding lead with Adrian 100, 115 and D4. At 5-2 Rosa's looked on for a great win. Something must have been in the food supplied by Pati's Bar as a low performing Porters suddenly stepped up to the board. Jeff (Cocky) Ward checked out with (147) T20, T17, D18. Ray Hayes then 100x2 D20.

Peter Ayres 117, D3 beat Chis Montes 140, 100. Sid Cross put porters in front 100, D20 beating Carlos 120.

That left a final singles to decide the result between Yvonne Roofrack and Steph Simpson.

On 55 mins, Revi controlled the ball on his chest before planting another well struck drive into the back of the net for his second goal.

When that will be is anyone's guess, but apparently director Graham Knight has been asked to continue in his existing role. Keeper Buyo and the lovely physio Henar Alvarez are the latest members of the playing staff to depart, and mystery surrounds the non-appearance on Saturday of centre back Zaragoza.

Tenza, Ramiro and Mani were the replacements in the starting line-up, but all 3 are inexperienced young lads at this level.

Despite all the adversity they have had to endure, it was Torry who started the match on the front foot. On 3 mins, a corner by Calderon was headed over at the near post by Lewis, then 6 mins later, an assist by Manu Amores picked out Beltran, only for him to shoot straight at the keeper.

Caballero rattled the crossbar on 18 mins, Lewis headed off the line, then a Caballero cross was headed over by Revi, as the hosts eventually got into their rhythm.

Throughout all of Sep, Oct and Nov, Torry lost only once, and were pushing Hercules 'B' hard for top spot in the Preferente division. What a contrast of form during Dec, Jan and Feb, during which Torry have not won a single match, having picked up a paltry 4 points out of a possible 40.

Borja and Verdu have departed (presumably, although nothing official has been released from the club), and the mad Algerian French striker Marwane is currently in the middle of a lengthy ban. Add to that, suspensions for Vicente and Coria (plus the Zaragoza mystery), and it's no wonder that manager Pedreno (also serving a touchline ban) was forced to include 6 youth team players in his squad for the match at Iliticana.

Lewis was performing minor miracles in defence, along with Walid, who was blocking goalbound shots by Revi and co. It was starting to resemble a scene from the Alamo, but amazingly the half time interval arrived with a scoreline of 0-0.

A slight respite arrived on 68 mins, courtesy of an assist by sub Arturo to fellow Torry sub Santi, whose shot was well saved by the outstretched legs of keeper Alex. Revi completed his hat trick deep into stoppage time, leaving Torry to once again regret their profligation in front of goal.

Lack of discipline has also been a factor towards their steady slide down the table, so bookings for Manu Amores, Calderon, Santi and Tenza, prove that lessons have not been learnt. However banned players are eligible to feature in friendly matches, the latest being a midweek 0-7 thrashing at the hands of CSKA Moscow at Campoamor golf complex.

Torry now sit in 11th place on 29 points, and with only 12 games remaining, must do enough to ensure that a consecutive relegation is averted.

(check website for confirmation) Torry welcome Monforte, who have won only 3 games all season, sit 2nd to bottom in the league, and drew 2-2 in the corresponding fixture back in October. Watch this space!!

Carp R Us Fishing Club The final round of the Winter Series was fished at Embalse de Argos. With the recent cold weather and a cold day expected, it was -2 as people started to arrive, we weren’t sure how good the fishing would be.

In the end it wasn’t too bad with the majority of the fourteen anglers catching. First was Dave Hoare with 16.60kg caught using feeder and pellet, as did second, Alan Smith with 14.66kg and third, Mark Foden with 13.10kg. Fourth, continuing her good form from the previous week, was Ann Fowles with 5.78kg.

This meant the series was won by Steve Fell with 161 points, second was Dave Hoare with 141, third Tom Marshall with 110 and fourth Dave Sutton with 109.

Well done to all 23 anglers that took some part in what was a hard series.

This month’s competition was held at Alicante Golf a week earlier than normal due to complications at the course.

Nevertheless the weather seemed to have given us a break with some sunshine in a chilly 11 degrees.

The course was in excellent condition and the greens were quick but due to the low temperatures still we are not seeing the high scores from the Gold division.

First tee was at 10.50 with 12 players and at the end of the day everybody journeyed back to the Club House at The Club in Quesada. Although it was cold out of the sun everybody said they enjoyed their day. Again for the second month in succession John Dodds managed to make the winner’s rostrum, congratulations. There were some close contenders but nevertheless he kept his first place as you will see from the results below.

We had one humorous occasion when Kevin Williams played his ball onto the green, a duck picked it up and ran away with it. The duck dropped it so a seagull decided to get into the act as well and he took it to the other side of the

course. It was declared a lost ball.
