Another record breaking year for the Orihuela Costa RBL

The Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion held it’s annual carol service on Thursday evening following the December monthly meeting at the Olympia Restaurant.

After feasting on mince pies the branch sang along to a number of traditional carols with accompaniment from the

Phoenix Concert Band, led by Musical Director David Last.

The carols were punctuated with songs from Cathy Carson who came out of retirement just for the evening.

Members were in an especially good mood following the announcement of another record poppy collection by the branch.

Once again the branch surpassed all expectations with their Poppy Appeal by collecting the incredible sum of €49,914, over €4,000 more than last year, which in itself was a record amount.

From small beginnings only 9 years ago, when the branch was first formed, and supporters collected a little over €6,000, the amount has increased year on year, thanks to the hard work and dedication of it’s enthusiastic members.

Golf contributed €12,000 to the total amount thanks to the generosity of local societies and the efforts of Mick ‘the grip’ Reeves and Mick Gossage.

There was a sizeable amount collected at Iceland in San Javier by Diana Wiltshire and her army of volunteers while a number of other branch members spent four days at Alicante-Elche Airport where the poppy boxes attracted sizeable donations in both Euros and UK Sterling.

In addition to the donations gathered from the sale of poppies fundraising has continued all year round, one valuable source of income being the bookshelves, managed by Don and June Williams and that are located in a number of bars around the region.

In announcing the final total, Poppy Appeal coordinator Eddie Coleman had a smile as wide as the gap between Mr Bean’s ears, as he thanked the many individuals who had provided their magnificent support to this amazing cause.

The Orihuela Costa Branch meets at the Olympia restaurant, Mil Palmeras, on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7.00 for 7.30pm. The branch enjoys many social functions, and everyone is welcome.

The District has 19 Branches and all arrange varied social events, as well as raising money for the Poppy Appeal and supporting our beneficiaries.

New members are always welcome and you do not need to have an Armed Forces background to enjoy all the Branch has to offer.

Busy week for U3A

T

orrevieja U3A members have just completed a very busy week. Amongst many other activities that were on offer, about 120 members attended the Quesada Golf Club for a Christmas feast including refreshment, which went down very well, as usual.

Friday saw the Easy Walkers taking a trip around the Sucina area where they were allowed to briefly visit a local farm that was host to some newly arrived lambs.

Considering the time of year, and despite strenuous searching, they did not come across any wise men or camels. Saturday was the turn of the Walking Group who took part in a longer walk around the Guardamar area with Sunday allowing the Petanca group to meet for one of its twice weekly sessions which, as usual, was well attended.

Monday was the last monthly meeting this year of

the U3A and was held at the its normal venue the CMO building where, despite the lack of refreshments due to the ongoing closure of the cafeteria, members brought along their own drinks and food to eat whilst they were entertained by the Singing for Pleasure group. They were treated to songs old and new and a short selection of carols.There was also an amusing rendition of the old favourite Henry and Liza song "There's a Hole in my Bucket" enacted by a couple of brave U3A members who will remain anonymous to protect them!!

Woman who killed daughter’s rapist finally released from prison Villena Prison whereMaría del Carmen García has spent the last 3 years

M

aría del Carmen García, the woman who murdered her daughter's rapist in Benejúzar twelve years ago, will not have to spend her nights in jail anymore.

Late last month she was given day release after serving a sentence Villena prison since May 2014. The agreement required her to report into Folcalent prison in Alicante, however, where she spent her nights.

In the latest move, however, the prison authorities have now approved her wearing an electronic bracelet so she will no longer be required to sleep in prison.

This has been confirmed by her lawyer, Joaquín Galant, who explained that by using this system her whereabouts will be known during the seven hours of the night that she must remain at home.

In 2009 María del Carmen García was sentenced to nine years in prison. Following the murder of Antonio Cosme, the rapist who sexually abused her daughter when she was just 13 years old.

The crime took place on June 13, 2005 when Cosme, who was on day release from prison, approached the mother when she was standing at a bus stop in Benejúzar. The woman went to the nearest petrol station, filled a bottle of gasoline and then threw it over the man, then setting him on fire by throwing a match. The rapist died from burns just ten days later.

In 2014, she too ended up in prison after the appeals court twice denied her request for a pardon.

María del Carmen García will finally end her sentence in August 2018 and until then she has to appear at the prison twice a month.

Currently, her request for pardon is pending a resolution.

Galant is confident that "if everything goes smoothly, possibly by January we should be able to completely remove the tag.”

The lawyer said that this will end "twenty years in the life of Mari Carmen that was stolen by the rapist of her 13-year-old daughter."

The woman suffers from all sorts of effects and disorders because of the rape and the circumstances surrounding the sexual assault. "Now she wants to get back to some semblance of normality, surrounded by her husband, children and grandchildren," said Galant.

South African fund acquires Pinatar Park shopping centre T

he Pinatar Park shopping centre has been purchased by a South African investment fund. The Vukile Property Fund group have purchased the San Pedro site for 10.7 million euros.

Alfonso Brunet, head of the company in Spain, said that "these commercial centres in Spain constitute a great investment opportunity.”

The investment for the construction of the shopping facility amounted to about 16 million euros, with the economic losses suffered by the developer thought to be over 5 million euros.

However, the new owners note in a statement that Pinatar Park already has already achieved profitability of 7%. With 100% occupation of its premises, despite competition and uncertainty due to the economic crisis.

Farmer drowns installing fence The installation of a fence ended in tragedy on Friday when San Javier Local Police confirmed the death of a farmer who fell into an irrigation reservoir in El Mirador while he was erecting fencing.

JJE, a 55-year-old Spaniard, was installing a fence on the farm, along with his son and a Moroccan labourer, when he accidentally ended up in the water.

The man, according to the police, "could not swim and although his 22 year old son dived into the water to try to rescue him, neither he nor the Moroccan citizen could pull him out.

The emergency services received several calls alerting them of the accident at 15.47 hours. It was attended by firefighters who used the services of a family friend, a diver, who went into the reservoir and located the body of the farmer.

The commercial core created between Dos Mares and Pinatar Park has now also begun to generate competition. Thus, work is underway on a new leisure facility in the area where a 2,000-metre building is being erected for an 18 lane bowling alley.

Rapp said Vukile's portfolio was now extremely well-positioned for long term growth, with the stable defensive South African base creating the launch pad for further international growth, some it it quite possibly in Spain..

Orihuela forum against abandoned and mistreated animals The Councilor for Health, Noelia Grao, together with Maite Lopez, a representative of the volunteers at the animal protection centre Asoka Orihuela said on Friday that the city will be hosting the IV Forum against the abandonment and mistreatment of Animals, which will take place on Saturday, December 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gabriel Miró Roundabout.

The intention is to raise awareness about responsible animal ownership, through an information booth and children's workshops, as well as various activities such as a charity market, charity raffle, a catwalk and a donation collection

point for the Protection Centre.

With Christmas just around the corner the animal charity will also be distributing information to schools in the area with the message "Animals are not toys”, hoping that they can raise awareness among young children that they must respect and take care of animals.

The councillor said "We invite families to come to the Glorieta, and bring along their pets, to learn about the work of the volunteers from the Animal Protection Centre, which currently houses about 160 dogs and about 90 abandoned cats that are all waiting for a home."

Judge releases nine Guardia Civil Officers on bail

T

he nine civil guard officers from Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada who were arrested and detained over a month ago on charges of corruption have all been released on bail.

Juana López Hoyos, the magistrate of the Court of Instruction number 2 in Torrevieja, confirmed their release this week on bail of 3,000, 5,000 and 18,000 euros with the amounts relative to each individual’s complicity in the investigation. Two civilians were also released on bail at the same time although another four civilians remain in custody.

In addition to the payment of bail all of the officers and civilians released have been required to surrender their passports and banned from leaving the country.

The judge has also instructed the individuals to appear in court twice a month whilst they remain on bail. They have also been banned from handling or using weapons.

The number of people under scrutiny is thought to be at least 26.

All are being investigated for crimes against public health, influence peddling, fraud, failure to prosecute crimes, lying to senior officers and the disclosure of information.

Meanwhile the Unified Association of Civil Guards (AUGC) is not at all happy about the course that the investigation is taking saying that the vast majority of agents operating in the Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada police barracks are not at all implicated in the case and completely above suspicion. However al appear to have been tarred with the same brush with many of them suffering collateral damage from the investigation.

They say that investigators should make it absolutely clear that these officers are in no way implicated in the enquiry.

The union have also asked the question as to why all of the agents under investigation are rank and file with no officers or non-commissioned officers so fare being implicated. They say that the involvement of only agents of the basic scale is highly suspicious.

Operation "Sakura" was opened in early 2016 by the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard based in Alicante with the aim of dismantling an organisation dedicated to the trafficking of narcotics with the alleged collaboration of several civil guards.

As the investigation began to unfold phone taps were put on a number of the agents as a result of which further officers were implicated as the enquiry widened.

More than 10,000 documents have now been filed in which criminal situations, many carried out by Guardia officers, are described in detail.

The union added that the judicial intervention has caused a great deal of tension and concern among the agents stationed in Torrevieja. Two civil guards associations have defended the work that is carried out on a daily basis in the Vega Baja and have highlighted the dangers of making sweeping statements about the situation of the security forces, remembering that it was the Civil Guard itself that opened the investigation and is now prosecuting these alleged criminal situations that involve their own colleagues.

Age Concern spreads Christmas cheer n Friday 15th December volunteers from Age Concern spent an hour or two with the English and Spanish residents of Residencia 3 Edad Mediterraneo Care Home in Rojales for their annual Carol Concert. Over two dozen residents sat in the garden and joined in with Christmas carols sung in both English and Spanish by the popular Rascals choir. The Rascals, extremely staunch supporters of Age Concern and everything they do, distributed tambourines and handbells to the residents, which they all had fun playing. Papa Noel made an appearance and handed a Christmas gift of chocolates to all the residents followed by staff of the Care Home coming out with trays upon trays of delicious biscuits, cakes and a Christmas tipple for all. The afternoon was rounded off with many residents, Rascals and staff dancing and we even saw a few flamenco moves! It was an emotional afternoon seeing so many people, some mentally and physically handicapped, taking part in the festivities with relish.

This Care Home is very close to the heart of Age Concern as every Friday many volunteers give their time, willingly, taking residents out of the Home either on foot or in their wheelchairs, for a stroll around Rojales sometimes stopping for a coffee, but mainly to just simply have a conversation. Two or three more volunteers, especially any Spanish speakers, could boost our volunteer team giving pleasure to people not as fortunate as us, and as the saying goes, ‘There but for the grace of God go I’.

This last Wednesday 13th, members of Las Filipinas Association, together with a number of local volunteers, gave their time to decorate one of the pine trees located in Los Dolses.

Living in Spain and the Canary Islands A new b ook by B arrie Mahoney Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.

agents were gloomy and removal companies were reporting a sudden resurgence in business, as many Brits were leaving Spain and heading back to the UK. Of course, many of the elderly and sick could not do this, because they had neither the resources, good health or inclination to deal with what would be for many a traumatic return to life in the UK. I also doubt that many would survive the rapid drop in temperature either.

The political climate is changing once again. As I look back over these turbulent 12 months, I know that many businesses, banks, estate agents and removal companies in Spain are reporting a greater positivity and enthusiasm from those who are still longing to move from the UK to Europe. For many, the EU referendum has confirmed what they already knew; that they are firstly European and not just British. Politically, many dislike what they see as a new antiEuropean order within the British political establishment and have decided to vote with their feet.

As well as retirees looking to fulfil their dream of heading for a healthier life in the sun, young people are seeing their future as still being part of the bigger European dream. Despite significant changes, there are new realisations for British people hoping to make a new life within a country of their choosing, and not just the territorial constraints created by an accident of birth.

It is true that many of the opportunities and freedoms have narrowed since myself and many others began our new lives in Spain, as well as other parts of Europe. The opportunities provided by the freedom of movement to live and work in any country across this exciting and inspiring continent are the envy of many across the world and should not be lightly overlooked. Life is short; if you have the enthusiasm and the means, my best advice is to grasp every opportunity to ‘live your dream’.

hat a year 2017 has been for British immigrants living in Europe, as well as for those hoping to make a new home in the sun. Since I wrote the first ‘Letter from the Atlantic’ as a newspaper reporter in 2004, so many things have changed.

When my partner and I moved to the Costa Blanca, it was a time of great optimism and exciting possibilities. The exchange rate meant that the British living in Europe were getting a very favourable deal.

Property prices in Spain were realistic, and for many people the opportunity of a new life in the sun became a reality and not just a dream.

It was also a time when British entrepreneurs established new and successful businesses in the Costas, and Spain was grateful for the investment and made newcomers welcome. It was a time when it seemed that nothing could halt the enthusiasm of the British for a new life in Spain.

Then there was the financial crash, later to be followed by the EU referendum and what has since become known as ‘Brexit’. Looking back, it should have been obvious that the pound was severely over valued for many years, and that many Brits were living in a ‘fool’s paradise’ that would eventually come to an abrupt end.

There was rapid devaluation of house prices, leading to negative equity and financial chaos for many who had over extended themselves when buying a property in Spain. A number of British owned businesses in Spain collapsed, leaving many disillusioned and with little option other than to return reluctantly to the country of their birth.

The result of the referendum, initiated by the then Prime Minister, David Cameron, went badly wrong from the point of view of many Brits living in Spain. The result of the referendum was accompanied by a fall in the value of the pound, and left many with a reduction of around 20 per cent of the income that they were used to. Pensioners, and those on a low income were the first to feel the initial impact of the decision to leave the European Union, and for a time it seemed that the rush to leave Britain for a sunnier future had ground to an abrupt halt, as the electorate began to take stock of their new position outside the European Union.

My new book, ‘Living in Spain and the Canary Islands’ goes back to the beginning of the year with a series of letters that reflected and

expressed the mood at the time. Confused as to what the future would bring, there were often angry, and sometimes depressed conversations in bars, restaurants and all areas of British social life in Spain and the Canary Islands, which is where I currently live. Estate

Local Police intensify patrols

Woman rescued from half built pool

A

70 year old woman and her 40 year old daughter were injured when they fell into a half built pool on Thursday after leaning on a balustrade that collapsed.

The swimming pool is under construction in their house at Calle Costa de la Luz in Quesada and as the pair were leaning over the balustrade to inspect the work it completely gave way.

The pair then fell from a height of 4.5 meters into

the shell of the pool that was enmeshed in wrought iron.

The daughter was eventually able to get out of the pool and call the emergency services who attended the scene from Almoradi Park.

The mother, of Swedish nationality, was moved out of the pool by the firemen, paramedics and officers from the Policia local prior to being transferred to Torrevieja Hospital where she was treated for her injuries.

The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, told a press conference on Friday that the campaign has been increased to identify those people who are discarding their garden waste illegally and in contravention of the Municipal Ordinance for the Promotion of the Environment.

The mayor said that a penalty of 100 euros that has been imposed by the Local Police on a gardening company that has disposed of pruning in a skip that is only authorised for the disposal of building materials.

A few months ago the mayor publicly announced his intention of putting an end to practices that spoil the cleanliness, mainly of urbanisations and residential areas in the municipality and announced that the regulations would be strictly applied.

He said that such practices are currently widespread among companies and gardening professionals that prefer to dispose of their waste illegally containers instead of taking it to authorised disposal points.

In the run-up to Christmas the markets aren’t expecting any dramatic data so it is likely to be political events affecting exchange rates.

The phrase ‘no commission’ is nonsense as the actual commission is hidden in the exchange rate.

Whatever the market rate, what is the rate you get? You certainly won’t get the rate you see online or on your iPhone.

How much depends on your bank and the expensive rent a Bureau de Change has to pay at the airport. Using a broker often saves you money on large transactions.

For a start there is a buy and a sell rate in the market so if you see just one rate, that will be in the middle of the buy and sell.

Christmas Activities on the Orihuela Costa DECEMBER: On Wednesday 13th and Thursday 14th from 5pm till 8 pm at the Sports Centre (CDM) JUVE ORIHUELA COSTA, there will be a number of different activities such as rock climbing, Christmas craft workshops, electric cars, a WII area and an X-Box area.

On Saturday 16th, a charity party is being organised by a number of different International Associations from 12 noon till 7pm in Calle Pablo Picasso, next to the Town Hall in Orihuela Costa.

Also on Saturday 16th, there will be a Christmas concert 'A night full of magic' at 7:30pm in the

Ecumenical Centre in La Zenia with the Unión Lírica Orcelitana (ULO) band.

On Friday 22nd, Father Christmas parades at 5:30 pm at the shopping centre Zenia Boulevard. A parade along the Calle Nicolás de Bussi and Calle Salvador Dalí to the shopping centre.

On Monday 25th there will be a Christmas concert with ACAMDO at 12 noon at La Zenia beach.

Portobello Walking Football in support of local charities Portobello Walking Football team, based at the Portobello Bar in Pinar de Campoverde, presented 2 cheques last week, each for 500 Euros, to AECC Cancer Research and to Amigos de San Jose Obrera, the Oriheula Childrens Foundation.

The monies were raised and collected by the football team at various fundraising events held at the Bar. Consisting of 20+ youngsters between the ages of

50 and 75, the team has been playing locally for approximately 18 month. They meet and train every Thursday at the Pilar de la Horadada Deportivo. Next charity fundraiser, we are told, is a walk to be undertaken by two of its members, Dave Coupe and Steve Howarth. More details to follow.

JANUARY: On Friday 5th: the Three King’s parade at 5pm from Calle Nicolás de Bussi and Calle Salvador Dalí to the shopping centre Zenia Boulevard, where a reception will take place.

Christmas cheer at Iceland

On Friday 8th and Saturday 9th December Age Concern were present at Overseas Supermarkets in San Fulgencio selling raffle tickets for some truly fantastic prizes.

The first prize was a huge hamper filled to the brim with tasty goodies and a few bottles of Christmas spirit. Second prize was very similar and the third prize was a voucher to the value of 25e kindly donated by the supermarket.

Customers of the supermarket were so very generous in not only buying raffle tickets but giving monetary donations also.

A staggering amount of 662.62e was raised which will go to the upkeep of all the many services and mobility aids Age Concern offer to the over 50’s on the Southern Costa Blanca.

Delighted first prize winners were Pat Humphrey and Cindy Parker from Quesada. Pauline Land, from La Marina, was the second prize winner and a very lucky young man, Adam, scooped the third prize of the 25e voucher.

Many volunteers from Age Concern willingly gave their time meeting and greeting people in the supermarket over the long two day period. President, Maureen Payne, was overjoyed with the response of happy Christmas shoppers and valiant volunteers and has promised to repeat this successful fundraising effort in 2018.

Brand new carol for Crescendo At their Christmas concerts in December, Crescendo International Choir sang a brand new carol written specially for them.

The choirs’ accompanist Antonio Guillen Posteguillo set to music a Christmas poem written by choir member Margot Gay entitled “Christmas time is here” Margot and her husband Richard joined Crescendo in 2005 shortly after moving to Spain. Sadly, Richard died in November 2013 and the carol is dedicated to his memory as he was known as ‘Papa Noel’ to everyone in Dolores.

Toni is a very experienced pianist and composer and has been the accompanist for Crescendo for several years.

Margot is becoming quite well known for her poems and short stories published in local papers and magazines. (Look out for a story entitled ‘Santa Claus in Spain’ in the Christmas edition of TV Choice.)

Alibaba and the forty thieves is one of the most famous stories from the One Thousand and one nights. The script has been updated but still retains its traditional panto atmosphere and humour.

Cast and crew are putting the final touches to their pantomime Alibaba and the forty thieves. A dedicated team and new cast members are pulling out all the stops in every way possible to bring to you, the audience another fun filled panto.

Meet the wicked Bombastardo who is plotting his next vile scheme to become the ruler of the world. Will he achieve his ambition?

Can Alibaba and his faithful friend Margarina save the day with the help of the Genie? Will there be a love story or two?

The recent "Mingle Bells" event for "Reach Out" raised a very satisfactory 366.60 Euros.

As usual the venue was the welcoming Marina Bar in Calle de Las Rosas Torrevieja and the superb Christmas lunch complimented what was to become a very fun filled afternoon including a Quiz, raffle, Tombola and many other surprises.

The festive theme continued with songs from The Rascals who gave up their time to support the charity and even Santa popped in to hand out Mince Pies to everyone.

David and Lorraine Whitney, once again organized this unique event and together with their dedicated volunteers made sure that the afternoon was a success.

Thanks must go also to Iceland Supermarket for their generous donations of mince pies for this event and also for their ongoing collection of food for the charity.

Thanks too to everybody who donated to this fun afternoon your generosity is very much appreciated.

There will be lots of songs and dance numbers also slapstick, jokes and audience participation with hissing and booing definitely encouraged not to mention “he’s behind you” or “oh no he isn’t”, “oh yes he is “ The cast will include children from ‘Essence Dance and Fitness’ helping to make up the chorus.

The Deadwood Stage Company joined in wishing one of their members, Theresa, a very happy birthday for her special day. A scrumptious chocolate cake was made by Rose with the pretext of the top decorations being good for ones diet!!!

She and Jude are seen alongside a Christmas tree and the other 19 members present raised their glasses to toast Theresa, as well as wishing all your readers a very merry Christmas.

The next venture for "The Deadwood Stage Company" will be "Cinder-Hella". This comedy with a Panto theme will be presented at "The Madhouse", Pueblo Principe, Villa Costa 9-11 February Tickets @ 6€ each are obtainable from members or you can ring Vida for more information.

Meanwhile, "Deadwood" carry on rehearsing and hope you all enjoy the festive season and can look forward to a happy, healthy New Year.

Stagestruck Theatre Group would normally have staged their annual pantomime by now but unfortunately, this year's performance had to be cancelled due to ill health. However, this hasn't prevented the group from raising money for charity.

A small group have continued to do Murder Mysteries in local bars and the whole group recently showcased their individual talents with an evening of variety which included singing, dancing, comedy sketches and monologues.

Leaf's bar in Quesada hosted the show on 2 separate evenings with 1000 euros raised from ticket sales and raffle. Stagestruck will make this amount up to 2000 euros and this will be donated to the Torrevieja Alzheimer's Association.

The group will begin their 2018 rehearsals in January for their Summer production.

The show will be a musical comedy, an original script written by Stagestruck Director, Leigh Humphries.

Miller added to his ton tally in the 1st pairs, partner Alex Nikolov completing the 601 on D12, plus a ton for good measure. Phil Waller's 2x 100 not quite enough for the Angels. Williams made it 5-0 on D2, before Dave Wright and Kain Hickman reduced the visitors lead, Wright coolly converting D8.

The COMETS didn't do too well away at Greenlands only managing to pick up 2 points. Bob Nesbitt, Carl & Ann Eagle won 29-6 well played; , Frank Scottherns teams only lost by 1 shot; Jack Jacksons team only lost by 1 shot; Total Shots were 99 to the Comets, 107 to Greenlands.

A great big thank you to our Social Secretary, Paul Thomas for organising such a great night for our Christmas Dinner at El Prado.

No Berleen match this week, so 2 San Luis teams played each other – thanks to the commitment of our members. La Marina Bowls Club

The Explorers went voyaging over to play San Miguel Meteors and unfortunately got blown away by accomplished opposition with score of 2-12 to them. Shirley Hadaway’s trio of Phil Pape and Hilary Cronk were our only winner 19-10.

Funny sort of game I believe when Emerald Isle Neptunes came over to play our Pathfinders with us winning just by 8-6. There were a lot of high scoring rinks which led to the Neptunes winning by two shot overall while we won on four rinks. So well played Alan Castle, George Furzer and Lorita Rae 16-14. Even more so to John Morgan, Arthur Cronk and Paul Tregoing a great20-7 win and even, even more, more so by John Rae, Barbara Forshaw and Martin Butler winning 34-8. Mustn’t forget Len Daniels, Mike Brain and Mo Taylor who struggled to win 10-0 as the opposition didn’t turn up.

Monday night saw us posh up and turn out for our Christmas meal and Disco at Paolas and Eleanors. Luckily most people had left before the Competition Secretary took hold of the microphone and gave the worst singing performance of the evening. Bless. Thanks very much to Jean Tregoing for organising it all.

Last game before Christmas saw the Winter League hop over to San Miguel and lose but the Hadaway’s teams did it again with both of them skipping a winning rink to give us our four points. So good on you Dave and Dave Taylor, Gina Hindle (with a bad back) and Mo Kidd won 19-17 and Shirley led her three of Phil Pape, Mike Surch and Janet Parsons to a 16-14 victory.

So all it leaves me to say is Health and Happiness to all the bowlers in Spain for 2018….. even the ones who beat me.

Julian and Dianne, Autumn 2017 Series Winners The SAMM Autumn Series of handicap races was a great success.

With no days lost due to the weather or other events held at CTD causing cancellations, the 8 days of the handicap series saw 16 races completed between September and November, all well supported by the competitors.

The results are determined using the “low points” system with each boat able to drop the scores of their 6 worst races leaving 10 scores to count for the series.

The clear winner with 8.75 points was the Topaz Duo sailed by Julian Singleton with the scores for 9 firsts and 1 second place counting.

Second was the Laser 2000, Shoestring Tres with 17.5 points with 2 firsts and 8 second places counting. She was sailed by Tug Wilson alone for 6 of the races but he was joined by Jack Moss for 2 and John Down for 2.

Third was the Gamba, Shoestring Uno with 21 points, with 4 firsts, 2 seconds, 2 thirds and 2 forth places counting. Uno was skippered by Dianne Hardwick for most of the races but her crew varied from race to race, depending on who else from the Shoestring Group was able to compete each day.

The trophies were presented at the SAMM meeting on December 13th. This is the first time an individual, in his own boat, has won a SAMM series, well done Julian. With more members sailing their own boats this could be a future trend. Unfortunately Tug Wilson had returned to the UK for Christmas so could not collect his trophy.

Carp R Us Fishing Club It’s difficult to know what to say about this week’s Carp-R-Us match on the River Segura in Murcia.

When we arrived there was plenty of work going on at the new weir, the river was flowing smoothly and the forecast was for a warm day with light winds, perfect for a good days fishing. However, when the match started it appears the sluice gate was raised and the river more or less stopped.

Whether this affected the fishing, we are not sure, but only one fish was caught all day, a carp of about 1.5kg by Dave Hoare taken with just 20 minutes left. Everyone else was more or less bite less, not even the bleak could be tempted. Not the best days fishing we’ve had!

Some good results to end 2017 on,In the Discovery League the Sycamores were at home to San Miguel Comets. Final score was Total shots for - 107, Against - 99. Points for - 12. Against - 2.

Winning rinks were - John OLeary, Ronnie Stansfield, Tony Hodges, 22 shots to 21. David Field, John Newell, Mike Cassidy. 20 shots to 14. Jean Giddings, John Dowell, Dave Giddings. 16 shots to 15.

Janet Bliss, Margaret Hirst, Graham Watt. 24 shots to 10. Pat Wray, Doreen Watt, John Wray. 19 shots to 10.

The Maples were Away to Emerald Isle Moonrakers and in a very evenly matched game came away with half the spoils, just missing out on the overall. final score was - total shots for - 98. against -101.

Points for - 6. Against - 8. Winning rinks were - Brian Tomlin, Chris Dewar, Dave Dudding. 19 shots to 15. Margaret Stephens, Ann Butterworth, John Obrien. 23 shots to 14. Janet Webb, Zoe Wilcock, Mel Brown. 18 shots to 17.

Our winning rink was - Brian Tomlin, Zoe Wilcock, Jim Wilcock, Barry Collins. - 21 shots to 13. as this was our final league match for this year we look forward to our xmas and new year break.After which we come back refreshed and ready for more competitive bowling.

The Pintos were at home playing host to Quesada Diamonds, it proved to be a tough match, but in the end both teams took 3 rinks each and the Pintos won the overall shots by a reasonable margin. Though there were only the two league matches this week, we did have some continuation to our fun and great camaraderie within the club. On Wednesday evening we had our Christmas Dinner and had a splendid time, it was enjoyed by all with dancing being attacked with zeal, many had the same approach to the bar. I have to confess to feeling a little smug on thursday morning, being of crystal clear head and eyes. Friday found us on a fun bowl, with the emphasis on fun and great company, accompanied by a mass of confectionary, including fine mince pies and cakes, a little mulled wine too. On 13th December another departure from the normal individual Joker competition saw 4 teams of 3 players nominating 4 holes, which counted as a double Stableford score.

The undoubted highlight of the competition was claimed by Gary Needham, who scored a Hole-in-One at the 90 metre 6th hole - the first since June 2017. Also welcome back to club stalwart Ian Henderson after a long enforced absence.

We held our Annuai Xmas bash on Tuesday 13 th December which was also our last game of the year.Course in excellent condition, Greens running very fast, but a biting cold wind which lasted for most of the morning. Around and About the Courses – Vistabella The golf course at Vistabella first opened to the public on 26th September 2009 as an 11 hole layout and was designed by Manuel Pinero the Ryder Cup player.

The course was only opened as an 11 hole layout due to problems with planning permission for the final 7 holes but once those issues were resolved we found ourselves deep into the financial crisis caused by greedy banks and completion of the final holes was put on the back burner until the economic environment improved.

Now as we head into 2018 you can see from the ever increasing number of cranes on the horizon that the housing market has shown fresh signs of life and if you visit the urbanisation of Entre Naranjos where the Vistabella golf course is located you will see an explosion of recent building either side of the road leading to the course.

As a result of this the owners of the Vistabella golf course re-commenced work on the final 7 holes approximately 18 months ago with plans to open the course late in 2016 or early in 2017.

Unfortunately the authorities interviened once more with approval of issues surrounding water licences and the initial planned opening period was missed and worse was to come because a whole growing season was missed for the grass to be planted and sewn causing further delays.

However finally all the permissions were received and although the greens had been prepared nearly 12 months previously the grass on the fairways and in the rough was planted in the last weeks of July 2017.

In such a short period of time the grass has grown dramatically the water hazards completed and filled with water and the bunkers have been sculptured and filled with sand.

I walked the final 7 holes last weekend and the course is in excellent condition and looks to be a real test of golf and will undoubtedly be one of the best courses in the area when opended to the public.

Marabu Golf Society @ Las Colinas In association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services For this month’s meeting a group of 24 players visited the established course at Las Colinas taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

The weather was beautiful and as usual the course was in good condition with very fast greens.

Today was our Christmas Competition which took the format of a best 2 from 4 stableford The winning scores on the day were as follows: 1st – Fantom,MacDonald,Wright,Laidler – 84 points 2nd – Probert,Jones,Hanaway,Bartlam – 80 points 3rd – Smith,Fanning,Speakman,Belson – 78 points 4th – Ollier,Dexter,Kelly,Greenwood – 77 points Nearest Pins – Martin,Kristensen,Wright,Laidler and Dexter Football Card – Mike Probert and Paul Greenwood After the game we returned to LEAF's Restaurante, which is located at Pueblo Brava, Quesada for our Annual Christmas Dinner and Annual Awards Presentation and we give our thanks for their continued support.

Our next fixture is the Interim Day at La Torre on 28th December 2017.

Las Ramblas Social Club Report What a terrific amount was raised toward the Poppy Appeal by the raffle for the electric GTech bike that was donated by keen cyclist Sharron Mather and her husband Ken. The final amount which was announced last week by organiser Mick ‘the Grip’ Reeves, was 1890 euro. Thank you so much to all those who participated. The money really will be put to good use.

The winning ticket was draw by Sharron at the Clubhouse Restaurant, Vistabella Golf, with proprietor Robin Parkes acting as the adjudicator.

TMGS Christmas Competition

40 members and guests played our annual Christmas Texas scramble at La Marquesa followed by an excellent Christmas Dinner in the clubhouse restaurant.

As in recent years special occasions are paid for from Society funds and this more than value for money meal was no exception. Most members wanted to show their Christmas spirt and dressed accordingly, bright red could be seen on all parts of the course except for one person, Karin Alm, who kindly showed the rest of us how in centuries gone by just how Christmas was celebrated in Sweden, she was dressed as follows: In Sweden, Christmas begins with Saint Lucia ceremony on 13th of December. The ceremony is held in her honour and is often associated with the traditional thanksgiving for the return of the sun. On this day, the youngest daughter from each family dons a white robe with a red sash before dawn and wears a crown of evergreens with talllighted candles attached. Just a short history lesson, thank you Karin!

Again the golf course was in good condition although a few fairways could be seen to be turning beige with the recent cold weather but playing great as usual.

The winner of the bike was Doug House from Bar UK in Torre de la Horadada with the consolation prize, of four Vistabella green fees and buggies, won by Simon Lee from The Plaza Golf Society based at The Ale House in Villamartin Plaza.

Unfortunately Doug couldn’t attend the prize giving so Lynn accepted the bike outside the Bar UK last week.

Once again, grateful thanks for all the money raised and to all who helped in making the final total so successful.

Ruby’s Golf Society The last game of the player of the year season took us to the difficult Las Colinas where the top four players teed off together at the end of a large field of players, all of them with a chance of victory.

The positions at the top did not change, with one of our ladies taking the honours. Michelle Evans managed to stave off the challenge from nearest rival Marc Doherty to take this years crown.

The rest of the field results were as follows; nearest the pin on the par 3's were Brian Wilson, Peter Jepson, Theresa Wright, Roy Stanley and Buck Taylor. Best front nine was Bill Malcolm, best back Theresa Wright.

Gold division winner was Michelle Evans and Silver division and winner was husband Jeff. The two's pot was shared by Brian Wilson and Theresa Wright, there was also aprize of two free games at El Plantio won by Dave Johnson. Marc Doherty won the football, after which we enjoyed a buffet provided by Matt and his staff, many thanks for that.

The main presentation took place at our Christmas dinner at Stan and Ollies, with speeches and our very own guest comedian Rob Vaughan. A great end to a prolific year with captain Colin Fear handing over to the new captain Dave Shelton.

On Monday we started out playing a Waltzer but by the 11th hole the rain came waltzing down on us to end the round.

On Wednesday things were much brighter but with a very cold wind. We played a ·Mulligan” and the results were as follows: Cat 1: 1st Bryan Neal 37 pts. 2nd Olga Douglas 36 pts. 3rd Lindsay Forbes 33 Pts. Cat 2: 1 st Terry Cullen 40 pts. 2nd Annemarie Weisheit 36 pts. 3 rd Reg Akehurst 34 pts.

On Friday, a nice sunny day ideal for golf, we played the Dusty Bin game and the winning team with a score of 86 were Reg Akehurst, Lindsay Forbes, Nick Campbell and Ulrika Barthe.
