There are no pavements or lighting, so that everyone who makes the crossing, adults and small children alike, is assuming a high risk of being hit by one of the many heavy vehicles that also travel across it.

The bridge currently has just one carriageway in each direction and in the absence of any sort of a footpath for pedestrians, the dangers are enormous.

On the hard shoulder, which is only 40 centimetres wide, and overgrown with shrubbery, a person who walks down the edge of the road carrying shopping, pushing a baby in a pram or anyone in a wheelchair, has to step back off the road and into the thick vegetation so as to avoid the passing traffic on this very busy carriageway, much of which can be heavy lorries.

This can be dangerous during daylight hours but after dark, in the absence of any form of lighting, it is absolutely treacherous.

The bridge carries the only access road that connects a number of urbanizations, currently estimated to be occupied by more than 5,000 people, but which is growing day by day as the Orihuela planning department continues to issue building permissions. For many people, it is the only route they have which connects them to supermarkets, the Orihuela Costa Health Centre of Orihuela Costa, the pharmacy, as well as the beaches and other services of the coast.

Builders have already deposited a bank guarantee Collecting at La Zenia Boulevard of 1.2 million euros into the Council funds so there is absolutely no reason whatsoever why the authorities have to seek a further budget allocation to fund this project.

In the Municipal Plenary of 10/29/2015, the Ayuntamiento gave its approval to the development of this bridge, adapting it for use by pedestrians, approving a motion presented by the CIUDADANOS municipal group.

Well now we have had enough of the council dithering. It has gone on far too long and continued further delays will almost certainly result in serious injuries or deaths along this most dangerous stretch of roadway.

The Leader Newspaper has been demanding the construction of a pedestrian bridge for many years, having run many stories on the subject since building first got underway in Lomas de Cabo Roig ten years ago.

Residents have also been demanding that the walkway be built as traffic continues to increase and as safety concerns for pedestrians continue to grow.

Pressures have especially grown during the last two years, since the election of the current government team. Orihuela Costa Associations have also made repeated requests to the council – in person, by petition, publicly, through the media and by social networks – but there has still been absolutely no progress.

The last time any mention was made on the subject by the council was in May when the councillor for town planning at the time, Begoñia Cuatero, acknowledged that her department was struggling because of a lack of manpower, and that she had been unable to submit changes to the project requested by the Ministry of Public Works.

The spokesman for the local residents association FAOC, Thomás Moreno, says he finds it incredible that the council has still not cashed in the builders bank guarantee and although the planning department seems able to find the time to issue building licenses for constructors, they are unable do the same for the basic services and infrastructure on behalf of the very people who just two years ago voted them into office.

In a development last Thursday Carlos González of FAOC attended the monthly Orihuela Plenary meeting where, during the formal business part of the meeting, he asked the Councillor for Planning, Rafael Almagro, exactly what the council plans for the pedestrian walkway were.

Almagro stated that he was fully aware of the project which he would personally ensure is completed as soon as is practically possible. Whilst Almagro said that he was unable to provide residents with a specific date for completion he did say that the matter had gone unattended for far too long and he would now ensure that it was given the priority that it rightly deserved.

FAOC spokesman Tomas Moreno said that he welcomed the councillor’s remarks, but if there is no tangible progress by the end of January the Association would put the matter in the hands on the Sindic de Gureges, the Valencian Community Ombudsman.

Mayor reminds Local Police of their domestic responsibilities

he mayor of Torrevieja, who is also the councillor for Personnel and Police, made reference during a press conference on Monday to an article published in the Spanish press, which suggested that there are a number of contract workers retained by the council who are not are not fulfilling the roles in which they are employed.

He said that the report was aimed, for the most part, at employees operating in the areas of road cleaning and waste collection.

Dolón said that “in all large companies there are many workers who are not satisfactory and it is up the companies themselves to identify and deal with them.” He added that the council will nevertheless be keeping a close eye on their activities.

“San Fulgencio ungovernable” says PIPN President, Samantha Hull One way or another, seven of the thirteen councillors have now been suspended.

our weeks ago the mayor of San Fulgencio, Carlos Ramírez, was sentenced by the courts to the disqualification from public office for a period of 8 ? years for administrative prevarication, irregularities in the award of municipal contracts, but he refused to leave office until such time as his appeal has been heard.

In recent days the situation has developed further with the refusal of five of his PP councillors also to resign from office insisting that he still has their full support. The councillors were told to resign earlier in the week by the Provincial Executive of the Partido Popular or face expulsion. The ERegional President of the PP, Isabel Bonig, has also been censured by the party for failing to withdraw her support.

Currently, of the 13 councillors, that now brings to six the number that are currently disbarred from office as the APUSF councillor, Mariano Martín, following his expulsion from office, seems to have lost his interest in politics altogether.

Chamber warns that lack of water supply to Alicante Province is critical he Alicante Chamber of Commerce has warned that if the local water supply is not guaranteed the Province will lose 25% of all it’s exports, amounting to 950 million euro per year. It says that 26,000 jobs depend directly on the Tagus water transfer.

other sectors all rely heavily on water from the Tagus River which is channelled through this transfer system from the reservoirs of Entrepeñas (Province of Guadalajara) and Buendía (Province of Cuenca) into the Talave Reservoir on the Segura River.

The Chamber has now joined the crusade launched by farmers and smallholders to ensure the water supply for agriculture with a statement in which they demand that the Government end, once and for all, the problems that affect the water supply from the Tagus-Segura Water Transfer to the province of Alicante and that, according to the Chamber, is now the greatest threat to the economic and social future of the Province..

Of course the problem in the province of Alicante is the lack of rain . "We have an average demand for water of around 1,300 hm3 but with average rainfall of around 655 hm3 we are only able to generate about 50% of what we need from our own resources. As a result, we have a structural and permanent deficit that ranges between 300/600 cubic hectometres every year," said the Chamber of Commerce report.

The agricultural food sector in the Valencian Community represents 20% of all xports, 8% of direct employment and 6% of GDP, and in the province of Alicante, the value of exports of agricultural and horticultural products exceeds 950 million euros per year, "representing 26% of all our exports", according to the statement issued on Tuesday by the Chamber.

Thus, the different sections of these containers can take domestic oil, fluorescent tubes and energy saving light bulbs, paints and solvents, aerosols, waste electrical and electronic equipment, and printer cartridges. All of the

items deposited will then be transferred for later treatment and recycling.

Co-ordinated Caring in the local community White Christmas

Wednesday evening saw the opening night performance of STUDIO32’s winter production “White Christmas”, and what a performance this talented company produced. Luke Ringrose, playing Captain Bob Wallace, put in a commanding performance in his first lead role starring alongside Nick Morgan as Private Phil Davies.

In the female lead roles was newcomer Suzy Bradley as Judy Haynes, and experienced actress Ann Bell playing her sister Betty Haynes. As the show progressed we saw how two romances developed, between Bob and Betty and Phil and Judy. All four actors worked well together, treating the audience to some delightful moments.

As the show progressed we were introduced to supporting characters General Waverley, played with remarkable authority by Don Wilkinson, and the robust character of Martha, played by Bev McEwan, whose solo number “Let Me Sing And I’m Happy” was put over with amazing power and control.

Company numbers were well staged with fine singing and dancing throughout.

Excellent supporting roles were played by John Palmer (Corporal Sheldrake), Alice Wakeford (Susan), Vicky Holden (Rita), and Julie Cartwright (Rhoda), Dianne Oliver (Tessie / secretary) and Sue Hurley (Jemima). The camp stage manager Mike was played with hilarious results by Mervyn Williams, and a special mention must be made for Keith Longshaw playing the role of Ezekiel, whose one-liners had the audience laughing in the aisles.

Director/choreographer Susan Zillah Wilson has delivered another STUDIO32 hit with the show raising over 3,500 euros.

Orihuela prepares for possible flooding

T

he pound had a good week against both the euro (1.135) and the US dollar (1.347) as the markets appreciated news that a mutually agreeable Brexit divorce payment figure was getting closer. Meanwhile back in the UK all parties expressed outrage that Brexit was going to be so expensive. So, what exactly is this payment they are arguing about?

The European Union wants the UK to stick to its long-

term budget promises. By March 2019 that budget will be 665 billion euros and the UK’s share is 13% (only France and Germany pay more) so the ‘bill’ would be 86 billion euros. Naturally the UK is trying to reduce this as some of the budget is no longer relevant and the weakness of the pound, which fell after the Brexit vote, is an issue in a budget denominated in euros. At the moment the negotiated figure is around 60 billion euros. A lunch on December 4th between Theresa May and the European President Donald Tusk is not expected to outline a definitive number but given the length in time over which the payment will be made and the fluctuating value of sterling over many years, assessing the real cost can only be guesswork anyway.

rihuela is preparing to face flooding similar to that endured almost a year ago, when the Segura River overflowed for the first time since it was channelled 30 years ago.

The City Council, through the Municipal Emergency Operations Centre (CECOPAL), carried out a simulation on Wednesday to test that everything is ready, just in case such a situation develops, and to check the new measures that have been introduced following the flooding last December.

CECOPAL is made up of the Local Police, National Police, Red Cross, Vega Baja Hospital, Civil Protection, Civil Guard, the Consortium of Provincial Firefighters as well as the water company Hidraqua, all of which took part in the simulation.

were also included in the exercise through the REMER network and will also have their role in case of flooding as a communication resource in case all others fail.

While movement by road may be affected by rain, storms or wind, the REMER network allows the transmission and reception of data at all times. Hence the initiative to incorporate it into CECOPAL as one more resource.

The mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, said that although the emergency services performed extremely well during last December’s flooding there are always areas that can be improved. It was those improvements that were tested on Wednesday morning.

The simulation, which was activated at 9am has also served to verify that the local police unit will not collapse despite receiving about 50 calls per minute.

Diputación to invest 1.2 million euros in Torrevieja promenade

“The problem is far more serious than the police are giving it credit. It is an endemic problem that is causing serious damage and untold losses to many existing legal businesses, damage that they really cannot afford or sustain.

Torrevieja’s president of the Association of Small and Medium-sized Traders (APYMECO), David Sánchez, has been critical of their presence since July, when his organisation issued a statement denouncing the massive presence along promenades and beaches in the illegal sale of products.

He said that Torrevieja City Council "has not done anything about it" to dissuade these people who have now moved their businesses onto the streets, with little police presence to dissuade them from doing so.

Having already suffered with the economic crisis of recent years, the damage being caused by illegal traders to genuine businesses is, without a doubt, another problem for those shopkeepers who have been able to survive. For all these reasons, the president of APYMECO urges the merchants to report, as many times as is necessary, the presence of these manteros in their areas to ensure that the Local Police are at least out on the streets.

Since 2012, when the Torrevieja City Council first introduced the Operational Reinforcement Group, one of its many tasks has been the control of illegal street vendors and the seizure of counterfeit products in the main tourist areas of the city, especially along the seafront in Juan Aparicio and La Cura beach. The responsibility should also extend to in the beach at La Mata, although there have been hardly any visits of the GRO during the summer season.

Following their clampdown 2 or 3 years ago the GRO now seems to have taken their eye off the problem as a result of which it is once again close to reaching epidemic proportions, another season of which will undoubtedly result in the closure of many more Torrevieja businesses.

Alicante Provincial Council of Alicante is about to start redevelopment work along Torrevieja seafront on the stretch between Punta Margalla and Avenida de las Habaneras.

Funding for the project has been set at 1,220,273 euros and will be provided by both the provincial and the City Council.

The project has been delayed following modifications but it is now expected to get underway in early January with a completion date of May 2018.

The work will include replacement of paving, urban furniture, signposts and lighting which will see the introduction of an LED system of greater energetic efficiency. There will also be improvements to the irrigation network and to the gardens.

The vice president and provincial deputy for the region, Eduardo Dolón, said that "after months of talks between the provincial government, the municipality and the contracted company we have managed to unlock this important project for the city of Torrevieja, in an area that attracts a lot of pedestrians, both during holiday seasons and throughout the rest of the year.”

The modification of the project has increased the original budget spend by 9.7%. Once the Torrevieja council approves this change, something that is planned for this week, the Diputación de Alicante will present the project to the public and the work could begin during the month of January. The work is expected to take three and a half months.

excessive nutrients produced by raw sewage pumped into the sea. The green bloom can cause skin disorders and other health problems if you swim in it. This problem is a combination of excess sewage, still water and the heat of the summer months, and is well recognised by many scientists, academics and health workers.

The growing threat of Algae Bloom

Of course, this issue varies according to each island and the seriousness with which the authorities deal with the matter. I won’t identify the ‘sinning’ islands in this ‘Letter’, but the information has already been published in local newspapers, and much to the annoyance of the ‘deniers’.

Several islands treat nearly all of their raw sewage, whilst others pump the vast majority of its sewage directly into the sea, and then wonder why, with increasing numbers of tourists, there is a problem.

Another challenge is the sludge that is created following the treatment of sewage. On the island of Gran Canaria, 70,000 tons of sewage sludge is produced each year, which costs the island four million euros a year to deposit this sludge in environmental centres.

The island is currently considering an imaginative and environmentally friendly way of dealing with sewage sludge that will also create a considerable economic advantage.

A recent study has concluded that it is possible to generate a compost from the sludge that could be used in agriculture, saving up to 38% of water in the process of composting. This can be used as a fertiliser, and performs as well as conventional fertilisers. Current studies show that compost made in Gran Canaria is more balanced and stable than imported compost, as well as avoiding restrictions on importing agricultural products to the island.

Although tourism is very important to all the islands, we must not forget that the islands’ agricultural industry has always been and

continues to be essential. Growing fruit and vegetables for export provides a significant income, but the costs of importing fertiliser are high. The use of locally produced compost would also be an economic advantage, since it is estimated that the agricultural industry would save more than seven million euros, which is the cost of importing twelve million kilos of fertiliser to the island each year.

Farmers would also benefit from the reduction in price of water for irrigation.

It is imaginative thinking such as this that will help to ease the many problems that an ever increasing tourist population is creating on the islands. In future, let us hope that tourists will not only be welcome for the money that they spend in the Canary Islands, but also for the waste that they leave behind.

Happy Animales Christmas Party Welsh Nobel Prize winner in Orihuela H appy Animales Spanien are organising their Christmas party on Saturday 9 December at Finca San Miguel de Salinas. Proceedings will get underway at 1pm and you are guaranteed the appearance of Santa.

There will be paella, drinks, mulled wine, cakes, entertainment by Pat Ricio, (Radio Costa), Jurgen Rost, kids dancing, raffle, auction and a flea market.

All the money raised will be used to support the

50 animals who live at the sanctuary. Every Cispa is still looking for her month their hungry bel- forever home lies have to be fed, costs circa 1500 euro, so please dig deep and be generous.

Finca San Miguel de Salinas is supported by the non-profit charity Happy Animales Spanien REG-Nr: G-54781174, founder is Mona Nowak.

In 2017 they rescued 36 animals, cats, dogs, ducks, chickens, 35 of which have found new homes in Spain, Germany, England and Switzerland.

Only Cispa is still looking for her foreveror fosterhome, she was dumped at the canal road, about 6 weeks ago. Rescued by Mona, she's a lovely, lively, whippet/podenco, and loves her food, loves people, and is not even one year old!

The mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, welcomed the Welsh theoretical physicist and professor emeritus of physics, from the University of Cambridge on Tuesday, Brian Josephson, was lecturing at Elche University last Wednesday.

Best known for his pioneering work on superconductivity and quantum tunnelling, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1973 for his prediction of the Josephson effect, made in 1962 when he was a 22-yearold PhD student at Cambridge University.

The British researcher is in Orihuela as guest and speaker at the fifteenth edition of the "Frontiers of Fundamental Physics" congress, organised by the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, together with the Interactive Teaching and Interactive Museum of the Vega Baja Sciences (MUDIC), the association of science teachers "Hypatia de Alejandría" and the Orihuela Council.

The conference is being held at the Orihuela-Salesas campus, the Desamparados campus and the Elche campus of the UMH. After Professor Josephson had signed the City Visitors Book Mayor Bascuñana said that he was extremely proud that the physicist was visiting Orihuela. He presented him with a shield of the city following which the councillor of Education gave him a book of poems by Miguel Hernández in remembrance of his stay in the municipality.

Spanish points-based licence system SIGNED, SEALED AND DELIVERED E T he Spanish points system gives 8 points to drivers who have held a licence for less than 3 years and 12 points for drivers who have held it for over 3 years. If no traffic offences are committed after 3 years drivers receive an additional 3 points. A point is awarded every subsequent 3-year period up to a maximum of 15 points. Drivers can recuperate points by completing a re-education course of 12 hours or a 24 hour course if drivers have lost all their points. Once the course is passed successfully drivers are awarded 8 points on their licence.

Iceland customers are always very generous and this year was no exception.

s usual, the Orihuela Costa and District branch of the Royal British Legion manned a Poppy Appeal stand at the Iceland supermarket in San Javier. Diana Wiltshire again arranged a rota, ensuring that there was always somebody available at the stand for over 3 weeks.

We are pleased to report that a record total of â‚Ź3696 was collected, an increase of â‚Ź275 on last year, in spite of one box being stolen in a burglary which took place in the house of one of the volunteers.

We would like to thank all the staff and customers for their generosity and look forward to collecting once again next year.

We thank the manager, Lisa Perry, for her permission, and the help received from all her staff, without which we would not have been able to proceed.

More than fifty Shipmates from the Torrevieja branch of The Royal Naval Association met at Restaurante Dona Isabel in San Miguel de Salinas on 23rd of November. Diego and his staff did us proud with an excellent three course lunch all washed down with some rather good wine! Earlier in the month several of us attended the Armistice Day service at La Siesta Church followed by a buffet at Hoggies bar and in December we have our Christmas party to look forward to.

We finally finished the last game at 12 minutes past midnight. I hoped to say it was because it was so even-stevens but I would be lying. It finished 10-2 to the Oldies although we did put up a fight and could have won a few more games if we had got our doubles earlier. Rachel got us off the mark in the 2nd doubles game with Lyn helping her out by some good solid scoring.

Some of the games were very close and the last two singles games

went down to D1 and both in extra time! Lorraine won hers against John whilst Angela won against Maggie. The other games were won

by Oldies Kevin who got 3 doubles, Rob and Bob a double each and Graham got 4 doubles.

There was certainly lots of fun and laughter and fantastic banter between the two teams and although we tried our hardest to put them off their stride in the singles games they were not phased at all, well maybe a little! Pam nearly beat the very raucous Rob in the 1st singles and Debbie had Graham running scared in the 2nd one. Despite Marie's best efforts to put Kevin off (although he got called Levin, Rory and Leroy) he held his nerve.

Rob scored a 133 and Graham scored a 100, Pam scored a 95. There were also some other high scores in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's from both teams.

However, the best score of the night, and the noise nearly brought the roof down, was Angela's unbelievable 180.

Great respect and applause and cheer from both teams. Her beaming smile in the photo says it all. Next up Michelle, Mel and Eddie took on Del, Jim and Glen with Mummy Lane smashing a 128 and Del 100 and getting down to double finishes as usual. It was Eddie who took a second for the Bees with D1. Not afraid of a fight the Ale House trio took their first leg from Gilly, Helen and Ivan a spectacular 140 from cocktail sausage and a superb D4 finish from University boy.

Alfie’s Golf Society El Valle - 30 November 22 members and guests from Alfie's GS travelled to the El Valle GC for the inaugural Committee Cup and 3rd and final leg of the Eclectic Cup meeting on November 30th. The weather was cold and windy with a little drizzle mixed in and it made it a very tough day for most golfers. The course was in very good condition, the greens were not as true due to recent sanding, some were fast and some were a bit slow which made it hard to hole anything. This was all reflected in the scoring and as our president said, nobody beat the course today.

Winner – Luke Branch Our winner of the day on countback was Luke Branch playing off a handicap of 24 with 34 stableford pts. 2nd went to Joe Murphy with 34 stableford pts. Best Guest went to Mac McLean with 31 stableford pts. Carp R Us After the disappointment of the previous week at Pedrera, the club made the long journey to Argos for the first round of the Winter Series. After a cold start the day ended up quite pleasant and with some warmth still in the water the fish were still feeding. First was the returning Mark Foden with 10.68kg caught using feeder and pellet.

Second was Dave Hoare with 10.12kg and a very creditable third was Ann Fowles with 8.26kg. Fourth was Steve Fell with 6.52kg.

The doubles started well for baby and Daddy Lane with a D17 win but from there on in the Ale House gang fought back with wins in the next 2 doubles for Del & Jim (D1), Philip & Jordon (20,16, D20). On to the singles with more wins for University boy (D1), Del (D1) & Andre (20 D10).

Ivan for the Bees showed hope of taking the bees to a draw (D5) but Bees captain lost his fight against Phil (5D10). Not one to take it lying down Bee Lane smashed the final single (D2) just as Karl turned to take a slurp of beer! Both players scored 100. A great evening of good banter and friendly atmosphere with most games all about the finishing.

Man of the Match: Ale House was Jordon Johnson and for the Bees, John Lane. And a mention for Del Lister’s 174! Final score 5-7 Report by Gilly Kirby Amigo’s Misfits v Hen’s Teeth Well, this was a result for the lads and lasses from Dolces this week who gave the Hen’s Teeth a real pasting. The Hen’s Teeth bent over but certainly had nothing to shake their tail feathers for. Captain Sonya struck the first blow checking out on 16-D20 in her triples with son Karl and the Locksmith.

Billy, Dickie and Chick’s D17 got them the 2nd leg and Sonya chanced her arm again with Ronnie, Dickie and Chick (D1) for the 3rd triples. No amazingly high scores but obviously the Amigos were nailing the doubles a bit nippier than the Toothy Cluckers. If that wasn’t bad enough, the Amigos upper their game in the pairs with scores of 85, 93 for Karl Cooper, 78, 95 for Paul Lock. The check-outs were courtesy of Sonya’s (140, 100, D1); Ronnie’s 81, D2 and Billy’s 98, D3.

Chuffed to be 6-0 up at the half way point, the gang of Misfits still had some gas in the tank, and perhaps elsewhere, as Paul Lock scored 100, D2 against Hen’s Teeth Henni (She could hardly play for another team with a name like that could she?).

Dastardly Dickie dunked in D2 despite a respectable 100 from Hen’s George and then Ronnie (D5) nearly came a cropper as Jan Hassall (MOTM) bit back for the Teeth with scores of 61, 63,108 and 79.

Dave Sheppard (117, 74) also put up some resistance but Karl scooped singles no. 4 (81, D8). Man of the Match Billy (123, 85, D1) took the penultimate leg and then Captain Cooper steered the ship home (78, D5) for a final result of 12-0.

El Rancho Bowls Club.

On Monday morning the Pintos played the Sycamores at Greenland and a close match it was, with the Pintos coming away with 2 rinks and a draw. The Sycamores took the overall shots by just 5 shots, a good result away from home for the Pintos.

Meanwhile the Raiders entertained the San Luis Romulans and took advantage of the home mat and bowling skills, to take 3 rinks and a draw. They also took the points for overall shots by a reasonable margin, a good result.

Friday morning found the Broncos playing host to Montemar Toreadors in brisk conditions, and had a great day, taking all 14 points which is always a good morale booster. La Siesta Bowls Club By Rod Edgerton In last week’s match against Emerald Isle Claymores the rink of Dawn and John Taylor with Brian Harman managed a rare event in getting a Hot Shot. Congratulations to them on this achievement.

In the Enterprise Division the Apollos were away to San Miguel Meteors and lost by 107 shots to 79 winning on 2 rinks. The points being 4 to La Siesta and 10 to San Miguel. On many of the rinks the matches were close throughout so the scores do not reflect how close matches were. A cracking win for Tony and Val Dalton with Dave Laverick who won 22-8 winning on 13 of the 18 ends. Dave Davies with Florence and Mike Edwards held on winning 18-13.

No match for the Pioneers this week with a bye.

Wednesday should have seen our Winter League team travel to San Miguel but due to inclement weather the match has had to be postponed and will now be played on the afternoon of Saturday 9th December.

The Blues had no match week as it is their week to have a bye.

The Golds away at Country Bowls Geckos had an exciting match winning the overall by a one shot margin by 95 shots to 94.Winners for the Golds were Barbara Cooper with Sheila Millward and Rab Logan winners by 26-11.Tony Campbell with Alan Ralph and Pat Reilly winning 21-15 and Jean James ,Did Gallup and Jack Burrell winners by 17-15.So 8 points to the Golds and 6 to the Geckos.

Next week sees the completion of our internal Christmas Hamper Competition which has been well supported by a vast majority of the members, with 50 members taking part every Thursday throughout November with the final round to determine the order of top team to bottom. Everyone playing will receive a Christmas Hamper at the club next Thursday.

Must thank our Social Secretary for all the hard work she put in to organise a great night out in Benidorm. Cheers Jean, well done.

Well done also to the Pathfinders who entertained San Miguel Comets at La Marina and won 12-2. A good win for Garth Slater, Jack Chorlton and Reg Jackson 19-5 and the same for Alan Castle, George Furzer and Loreta Rae 25-9 winners. Sue Daniels, John Rae and Paul Tregoing played well to win 17-11 and the same for Sue’s husband, Len plus Steve Hindle and Barbara Forshaw 19-10. Last but not least a nice victory for John Morgan, Dave McGaw and Gina Hindle 17-12.

The Explorers battled their way to Vistabella to play the Albatrosses but we couldn’t find a way passed them and lost 4-10.

Nevertheless there were some tight games. Our two winners came from Dave Hadaway, Cliff Rawlinson and Anne (Correct?) Stone 1916 while in form lady skip, Margaret Finlayson won again with the help of Martin Webb and Maureen Kidd 22-16.

Come the Winter League we donned our wellies and snorkels and made our way home to play Bonalba and we did. The only clubs to play our game. Some good battles went on but no umbrellas were needed. Terry Perchard, Mike Stone, Wendy Latham and Mo Taylor won 26-10 while Dave Hadaway, Dave Taylor and Mo Kidd triumphed 16-8. Barry Latham, Peter Parsons, Carol Smith and Dave O’Sullivan pulled away for a 25-16 win. That gave us an 8-4 victory and at this moment in time put us 7th in the league. Hurray.

With Friday came the better weather and it was smiles all round for the Merlins at Emerald Isle playing the Claymores with a great 11-3 win. The bloke older than me, Alan Castle skipped his other two, Len Daniels and Paul Tregoing to a 16-14 win. John Withers played it cool and turned up just after the games had started and led his merry men, Steve Hindle and Martin Butler to an 18-13 score line.

Sue Daniels, John Rae and Jean Tregoing battled very well to produce a 23-19 win. Barry and Wendy Latham and Brian Duff played well to reach a 22-11 victory. How about this 22-15 down on the last end and Bill Jones, Arthur Cronk and Reg Jackson pulled off seven shots to draw the game. What a finish.

The Ospreys followed to play the Cavaliers but unfortunately lost 86. No more details at the moment.

With only a few members playing on grass previously it proved too much for the Toreadors who only won on one rink. Monte Mar Matadors v Vistabella Picadors The Matadors had a good results in the Southern League against the Picadors. Winning on four rinks were Ronnie Cairns, Ted Hyman and skip Dave Melville 18 – 6. Alan Wilkinson, June Young and skip Alan Ashberry 20 – 13. Val Hyman, Bill Webster and skip Bill Young 32 – 10. Monday 27th November - Matadors v Emerald Isle Titans Away to the Titans in the Enterprise Division. It was a lovely day for bowling unfortunately the result didn't go our way. Winning on one rink, but very close on the other five. Our winning rink Val Hyman, Bill Webster and skip Bill Young 25 – 20 Shots Matadors 89 – 126 Titans. Points Matadors 2 – 12 Titans.

Two Bri(y)ans hold sway at El Plantio 2 GS TMGS @ Alicante Golf 29 November

10 teams took part at Las Ramblas for a Texas Scramble 4 person team event, with each team being made up of 2 low and 2 higher handicap players, a format that suits the Las Ramblas course where you can be a little bit more aggressive in shot selection once a 'safe' ball is in play.

Team nearest the pins were up for grabs with Teams Phil, Declan, Colin and Darren all winning drink vouchers for their efforts.....hole 12 proved particularly difficult with NO players making the green!!!!

On to the main contest the top 3 teams were only apart by point 4 of a shot with Team Colin coming 3rd with net 62.3.

2nd place went to Team Phil with net 62.2 and with a great net score of 61.9 was Team Warren made up of Waz, Big Ron, Lucky Lee and North East Nigel....well done to them sharing 100 euro first prize.

As a result of temporary visits to the U.K., the turnout for the monthly medal at El Plantio 2 Golf Society on 28th November was much reduced from the norm with 11 players teeing off. Star of the show was Bryan Watson who achieved one nearest the pin and also won his second monthly medal(hefty cut to come Bryan).

Nearest the Pins, Hole 5 - Bryan Watson and Hole 2 - Brian Coupe.

If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities.

Our original start sheet showed in excess of 24 members to play at this venue. Alas on Tuesday evening they were all calling to ask if we had cancelled it due to the heavy rain that had been forecast. The Secretary insisted that the competition would go ahead and that the forecast was not always correct!

The 11 members that did actually turn up to play were rewarded with a course that was in great condition with ONLY our 11 members on it and yes, you’ve guessed it we had almost no rain! The buggies were confined to the cart paths which did mean a little walking, especially if you were playing on the other side of the fairway, in fact thee course was almost dry and the buggies could have been used as normal.

However this did not dampen our day’s enjoyment and we completed our round in just 4hr. 10 mins.

TROUBLE SHOTS - PART III The old statement that we drive for show but putt for dough may not be exactly true for all standards of golfer but for sure how you play from 60 yards in to the pin determines how well or badly you score on the golf course.

How many times have you seen people hit the ball all over the place only to finish with a better score than you because they could chip and putt?

Alternatively how damaging is it to hit the ball out of the middle of the club the entire round only to miss-hit shots on and around the green?

The mental impact of this type of play is significant on your level of confidence and it puts stress on your long game as you feel that you MUST hits fairways and greens.

There are normally basic reasons for poor shot making in and around the greens and below are a number of techniques that you can employ to eliminate or reduce poor shots of this type: Fluffed Chip This is usually caused by quitting on the shot and can usually be eliminated by ensuring that your hand are ahead of the ball at address and to keep them that way through the swing and ‘feel’ as if the grip keeps moving forward through impact and beyond.

The Thin This finger stinging shot is cause by the leading edge of the club making contact too high up the ball and is usually cause by the player ‘scooping’ at the ball and again can be corrected by ensuring that the hands stay ahead of the club head through impact with a slight descending blow therefore squeezing the ball between clubface and turf.

Duffed Bunker Shot This is again usually cause by quitting on the shot and taking too much sand.

The aim is to lift the ball out of the bunker on a wedge of sand with the clubface not actually making contact with the ball.

One good practise drill is to draw two parallel lines in front of and behind the practise balls approx 4” apart and when you swing down at the ball try to enter the sand with the club head on the line behind the ball and exit the sand at the point where the line is in front of the

ball.

When you play on the course you should simply ‘imagine’ the lines in your mind and attempt to enter and exit the sand at these points.

Duffed 60-yard Bunker Shot Without doubt this is probably one of the hardest shots in golf because the amount of sand that you take with the ball is minimal and the club head is travelling at a faster speed.

When you are faced with this type of shot on the course step out of the bunker and take a couple of practise swings then re-enter the bunker and attempt to repeat the practise swing for real.

To assist the process you should put slightly more weight on your front foot to encourage a steeper angle of attack to obtain a ball then sand strike.

There will be significant advantages to your golf game if you can improve this area of your game BUT it requires practise and sometimes you will have to sacrifice playing time for practise time.

Las Ramblas Social Club Golf Report Monday we played 2 Ball Better Ball High & Low, two teams came in with the same score but the winners on a count back were Ron Phipps and Geoff Biggerstaff with 43 pts. Second were Peter Wickham and Ronny Luffman.

Wednesday was a wash out due to rain with no golf being played.

On a fresh and breezy Friday we played “Change Partners” and with a score of 82 pts the winning team were Ron Phipps, Peter Reffell, Rachel Leckey and Albert.

Torry promotion hopes dented by leaders Hercules CF B...............3 CD Torrevieja ................0

alk of Torry promotion was dealt a sobering blow on Sunday evening with humiliating defeat at table topping Hercules B. Three second half goals from David, Toni and Pedro did the damage against a Torry side that lined up before the game without three key players.

Forwards Marwane and Manu, together with central defender Verdu were all ruled out by Pedreño through injury, so it was a makeshift

XI that took to the field against the league leaders.

Prior to the game the main topic of conversation inside the Juan Antonio Samaranch stadium, was whether or not Torry could improve on their abysmal showing the previous week against Calpe.

Having blown the chance of leap frogging Hercules, they had to be content with 3rd spot, but were still only a single point behind the 2 front runners.

Before start of play, Torry boasted the meanest defensive record in the league, having conceded only 5 goals, but with only 13 goals scored, their tally at the other end simply wasn’t good enough, with only mid table Callosa having converted fewer.

Hercules could have been a couple of goals to the good by the interval but poor finishing from Toni and Rafa saw the two sides reach the interval without either having troubled the scorecard.

In a scrappy 45 it wasn’t until the 35th minute that the visitors troubled Roberto in the Hercules goal but even then the save from Beltrán was fairly routine.

Hercules looked menacing from the restart and within a minute David, who had followed in on a Buyo save, put the home side in front from close range.

Down the motorway for the first time in many months, we headed south to the mar menor golf course. It was fairly cold and many of the members decided it was time to get the winter clothes out for the first time. There was also a slight bit of rain, but overall a very enjoyable day out. The course was also in great condition which made the scoring quite reasonable. As always, there is always someone that gets lost and this time it was yours truly! I kept telling the lads that you are never lost when you have a full tank of petrol, just doing a little detour. We still arrived with plenty of spare time.

Results for this outing: Overall & gold division division winner with 38 points was Ray Muttock. we had cancelled it due to the heavy rain that had been forecast. The Secretary insisted that the competition would go ahead and that the forecast was not always correct! The 11 members that did actually turn up to play were rewarded with a course that was in great condition with ONLY our 11 members on it and yes, you’ve guessed it we had almost no rain! The buggies were confined to the cart paths which did mean a little walking, especially if you were playing on the other side of the fairway, in fact thee course was almost dry and the buggies could have been used as normal. However this did not dampen our day’s enjoyment and we completed our round in just 4hr. 10 mins. Results: N.T.P.’s Hole 3 D. Sullivan, Hole 6 O. Rong, Hole 8 J. Dean, Hole 12 S. Sonesen, Hole 15 NADA, Hole 17 B. Gillies. Three second half goals saw Torry comprehensively beaten

A fine solo effort saw Toni double the Hercules advantage before the visitors were handed a lifeline when Beltrán was bundled over in the box. The player picked himself up to take the spotkick but it simply wasn’t Torry’s day as the striker hit his tame attempt against the post.

Almost from the rebound Hercules broke up field to punish the visitors with a third which was converted by the diminutive Pedro when he cut inside to hit a low shot under the body of Buyo.

The win extends Hercules status at the top while, amazingly Torry remain in 3rd spot after Jove Espanol could only manage a draw.

Next Sunday Torry are once again back at the Vicente Garcia for a 5pm ko against 2nd placed Villajoyosa where Pedreño will be looking for a much better performance.

Rockets Golf Society @Altorreal A long trek down the Murcia Motorway to this lovely golf course, For the time of year and the long hot summer the course was in pretty good condition but the greens were very awkward to read.

Scoring overall was not very good but a very enjoyable day was had by all.

In the Gold category Liam Foley came in with top score of the day 35 points followed by Rod Smith with 31 points in Second place and arfer Williams took 3rd place with 27 points.

In the Silver category Andy Stenning came in with 29 points to take first place with Paul Mutter with 27 points in second place and Geoff Wild in third also with 27 points on countback.
