Tourism brings Moors and Christians to Coast oth Orihuela city and the Orihuela Costa beaches have seen a greater influx of visitors this summer according to the Councilor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez, with thousands of additional holidaymakers arriving from both within Spain and abroad.

The information has been gathered from tourist offices located in the city and on the coast where figures show that

the number of visitors seeking information has increased by 30%. In addition to verbal enquiries there have been a further 16,000 interactions via the tourism website.

According to the councillor, "the average hotel occupancy has exceeded 90%, both in July and August, even reaching 100% on the coast during parts of August, especially in those establishments offering golf.”

Álvarez said that the tourist who arrives in Orihuela also appreciates the sense of security that they can enjoy which can be shown in figures produced by the Guardia Civil " where the number of complaints has suffered a significant decline.

The increased figures are also partly due to the hard work carried out by the department in the last two years, together with the continuing advertising campaigns "that have worked very well in making the whole area much more attractive to the visitor," according to Alvarez.

The councillor said that a new tourist map is being prepared “that will have a new design, which is much more modern and attractive".

The councillor argues that the reputation of Orihuela as a tourist hotspot "continues to grow non-stop, particularly internationally, as a result of which it is now enjoying more visitors from different countries."

With the support of the Provincial Tourist Board 'Costa

Blanca', the Council has recently redesigned the promotional brochure and is now able to offer versions in Castilian, English, French and German. It has also recently added new translations in Dutch (Flemish), Finnish and Russian, "because the number of visitors have increased from all these countries in the tourist offices", says Álvarez.

At 1pm, the main focus will be on gastronomy, with a tasting of rice in the Plaza Ramón Sijé.

On September 27, Orihuela will be celebrating World Tourism Day with a number of activities to be held in the city, districts and on coast, from Friday 29 September to Sunday 1 October.

Walkers will be able to enjoy the natural heritage and beaches which will feature through two routes on Sunday, October 1st.

One of them will be Nordic Walking along the promenade and the Cabo Roig Tower, while the other will be the Water Route, which will start from the Town Hall, passing through the Cremos Wells and the river sotos, ending in the Mill of the City.

This year will focus on the theme "Sustainable tourism for development". The councillor has said that she wants all of the people in the municipality "to feel tourists in their own city, and thus, know all the activities and options that it offers for the visitor."

There will be a Hernandian nocturnal route on Friday, a cultural walk on Saturday starting at 10:30 am at the arch of Santo Domingo, through which to learn about the monumental, historical and cultural heritage that Orihuela has.

Sports tourism will also be represented with a golf class, at 5pm at the Vistabella Golf Club, while Saturday night is reserved for parties, with a parade at 19:30 of Moors and Christians in the Urbanisation of Orihuela Costa Aguamarina, followed by a flamenco show.

All these activities are free, prior to registration in the Tourist Info of Orihuela Ciudad and Orihuela Costa or by phones 965 30 4645 and 966 76 0000. The Department of Tourism will arrange a bus service so that citizens can go to all activities, both from the city and from the coast.

A Manchester based airline Thomas Cook are the latest airline to stage a 24-hour strike in a dispute over pay after pilots walked out last Saturday following several days of unsuccessful talks.

Saturday’s strike is just the first, with two further walkouts planned for the next two Fridays September 29 and October 6, should an agreement not be reached.

The strike follows the disruption caused by Ryanair last week when the Irish airlive cancelled over 2000 flights because of a mix up over pilot’s holidays with over 300,000 passengers affected by those cancellations Brian Strutton, the general secretary of the British Airline Pilots’ Association (Balpa), said: “Our argument is not with passengers. We need Thomas Cook to understand just how resolute pilots are and how frustrated they are with the company.’

Edeis showed great interest in the commercial areas, the extensive disposal of the available space. They focused their assessment on the operations that are needed to reduce the time needed to open the airport to commercial exploitation.

Aena, meanwhile, made a very detailed evaluation of the facilities with a view to optimising maintenance costs. They praised the high quality of materials and finishes as well as the energy and light efficiency of buildings.

Torremendo resident lies for 16 hours with broken hip

F

irefighters have rescued a 66-year-old woman on Monday lunchtime who accidentally fell to her empty pool at 7 pm on Sunday evening.

The injured woman, who is said to be of German nationality, was taken to the Vega Baja hospital where she is being treated for a broken hip.

The injured woman lived alone, she did not carry a mobile phone with her and was unable to notify anyone, as a result of which she remained incommunicado for about 16 hours.

According to sources the woman was found lying by the side of her pool by a neighbour who went looking for her after she failed to turn up to feed the animals, a task that the pair carried out every morning.

The woman, who lives alone following the death of her husband 4 years ago, has resided in Torremendo for about 15 years.

Tourism issues 200 denuncias on illegal rental properties The Regional Secretary of Tourism, Francesc Colomer, said that in his attempts to eradicate the clandestine property rentals on the Costa Blanca, that he says number over 400,000 places, he is pleased with the progress that the community has made.

During the months of July and August, inspections have formalised the registration of 1,300 tourist apartments. Since the beginning of his legislature in 2015, Colomer said that 32,335 apartments that were illegally rented out, have been identified, with the opening, this year alone, of 209 cases that could end in sanction.

Three of the major online trading platforms, Homeaway, Airbnb and Rentalia, have received the maximum fine allowed by the current law for trading with unlicensed rental properties: 30,000 euros each.

However, Colomer said that the fines are only a ‘drop in the ocean’ for these giants, and now the Consell wants to increase the amount of the maximum penalty to 600,000 euros.

In July and August, 1,396 new rental properties were registered in the province of Alicante, 752 in Valencia and 441 in Castellón. 181 companies have received inspections and 13,758 homes have been approved. Since 2015, the number of apartments regulated on the Costa Blanca has risen from 25,494 to 34,764, which has been made possible by the involvement of many local municipalities in the battle against clandestine housing.

The market in the rental of unregistered apartments is thought to be worth at least a billion euros annually in unpaid taxes to the Hacienda, involving about 125,000 home owners who offer their properties for rent, especially during summer, privately and without a contract.

Fire destroys pine forest close to El Galán and Eagles Nest Firefighters from Pilar de la Horadada, Torrevieja and the forestry brigade of Guardamar were called to deal with a fire on Tuesday afternoon in the vicinity of the protected areas of Sierra Escalona on the property of La Balsa, close to the urbanisation El Galán and Eagles Nest, in San Miguel de Salinas.

The fire broke out at about 2pm in an area of pine forest not accessible to vehicles, near the road linking San Miguel with Pilar de la Horadada (CV-941), across from Las Colinas Golf Club.

First on the scene were the firefighters carrying out a temporary summer deployment in Pilar de la Horadada. They were followed by vehicles from Torrevieja and members of the forestry brigade from Guardamar del Segura.

The fire destroyed about one thousand square meters.

There are perhaps 20 need repainting along Calle del Mar and down the adjacent streets, some being far worse than others because of the weight of traffic.”

Spain’s ‘most loved dog’ Rodeo suffers severe injuries in car accident ‘I love him - I just want him home’ – heartbroken Emma Tytherleigh

By Andrew Atkinson Arguably Spain’s ‘most loved dog’ Rodeo has suffered severe injuries after being hit by a car - that has led to a fractured leg, internal bleeding and anaemia.

“Little ‘Rode’s’ was hit by a car that has fractured his leg – I feared in the first few days he wasn't going to make it,” said heartbroken owner Emma Tytherleigh.

Horse Show woman Equine performer-trainer Emma, who has entertained thousands of people throughout Spain said: “Rodeo is a little fighter – that gave us hope.”

Rodeo has undergone an operation to repair the injuries – leading to a big financial cost in veterinary bills: “The bills are becoming a little out of control,” said worried Emma.

Emma, who regularly starred in the ‘Flamingo and Horse Show Spectacular’ events in Torremendo, Alicante, said: “As reluctant as I am to ask for help, the truth is realistically I need to.”

Emma, one of the leading stars in Circus Vegas that toured Europe this year, said: “If anyone has a few spare euros I would be extremely grateful to those who would be kind enough to help.”

Emma added: “Rodeo fractured a leg, that lead to suffering an internal bleed. He also has severe anaemia. During the first three days the vets were very strongly preparing me for the worst “But by some miracle - he's looking stronger. They now feel he's in with a chance.”

Emma, who has starred in films, and is known as one of the leading horse show women in Europe, said: “Rodeo’s case is more complicated than most.

Following the accident the veterinary surgeon struggled to operate due to extreme complications – something that was eventually overcome.

“Thankfully we found an amazing animal hospital and Rodeo underwent the operation to fix the fracture,” said Emma.

Rodeo has been a key figure in Emma’s horse shows, especially in Spain, where thousands of ex-pats and holidaymakers were wowed of his skills in the show ring.

Emma has offered help, in return for financial help: “If there is anything I can do in return, I will,” said Emma.

“Anyone that knows me, knows this little dog means the world to me. Rodeo has done so much for me and my family over the years.

“I could never do enough to repay the little chap. I love him - and I just want him home,” added Emma.

Red Cross appeal to RBL for English speaking volunteers Pedro Dominguez, the Provincial Coordinator for European residents of the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja Española) in Communidad Valencia, was the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion on Thursday evening in Mil Palmeras.

Pedro was invited to attend the meeting by the Branch Welfare Officer Sandie Coates in order to highlight some of the many services that the organisation can offer to vulnerable British nationals, such as advice and support with accessing social services, help for sufferers of Alzheimer’s and dementia, and practical help for those suffering financial difficulties.

Q&A session which provoked lively discussion as well as providing lots of information to the many residents in attendance.

Pedro also appealed for English speaking volunteers to work with the Red Cross so they can help their fellow nationals access the support that they may need. He explained that training is provided in English which is the language that volunteers would also operate in, so there is no need for any more than a very basic knowledge of Spanish.

t was a pleasant surprise this week to read that the Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is visiting South Korea to exchange ideas and experiences about policies on public transport, and a range of other issues. It makes a pleasant change to read positive news about South Korea, rather than depressing and unpleasant rhetoric, sabre rattling and threats between their neighbour, North Korea, and the United States.

Transport has been a major challenge to authorities in Seoul for the last 40 years, because of the rapid increase in its population. Bus and subway systems have required massive investment and improvements, which are some of the issues also being faced in Las Palmas.

The sharing of information, including the new Metro Guagua transport system in La Palmas, could also be of significant help to Seoul.

Representatives from Seoul have been invited to visit Las Palmas when the Metro Guagua is in operation.

the Korean whaling industry that took place off the Canary Islands in the 1960s and 1970s.

Hundreds of Korean workers and their families became stranded on the island, which quickly became their home.

In the 1970s, statistics show that there were around 7000 Koreans living in Las Palmas, which became a significant proportion of the total population. As delighted as I am that the whaling industry has ended off the Canary Islands, the Korean community has thrived and become interwoven with the multicultural, multinational and religious mix that Gran Canaria has represented so successfully for many years.

The possibility of Canarian and South Korean Municipalities working together on a number of strategic projects has also been discussed, as well as investment from South Korea for projects in Gran Canaria. Cooperation and sharing of ideas between countries should always be welcomed.

Korean families have also maintained their strong religious and cultural identity. I recall being invited and welcomed to a service held at the spectacular Full Gospel Korean Church in Las Palmas several years ago, where the service was simultaneously broadcast in several languages. Rarely have I witnessed such enthusiasm and fervour within a church.

Links between South Korea and the Canary Islands are not accidental. Many residents and tourists are simply unaware that there is a significant Korean population living in the Canary Islands, and particularly in Gran Canaria. This has developed since the collapse of

Summer Party at Happy Animales in San Miguel Finca San Miguel de Salinas had their summer party recently at which it was nice to see some new faces and a lot of different nationalities who all found the way to Finca San Miguel de Salinas.

It started with the first show by Mona and Sol! They were dancing in their bikinis to the song, Walking on sunshine, which they did until 2 of their BIGGEST sponsors, Angela and Aad, agreed to take the ICEbucket Challenge. You could tell by their faces that it was COLD!! But they did it and raised about 1000 euros which will cover 1 month costs for the animals.

Thank you to all their sponsors here in Spain, England, Germany, Holland and Italy.

The Dance school followed with 2 shows, 1 modern dance, and 1 flamenco with everyone having a great time.

Unfortunately the paella was served rather later than scheduled but while most people were waiting the raffle got underway.

Hope funding for Tasha At Hope Christian Fellowship, the congregation and pastor donated a cheque for 1000 Euros to the Tasha fund which was accepted by her father who commented that he was “very touched by the amount of help they were receiving for Tasha”.

Hope Christian Fellowship gives a high percentage of their donations to charitable causes in the La Marina area.

Velvetones Birthday ‘Bash’ for Peter The Velvetones were on hand to celebrate Peter's special birthday at the Friendly Bar, Los Montesinos last week.

The Magical Murder Mystery Tour Presented by the Campoverde Theatre Group Campoverde Theatre Group are presenting their exciting new production, the Magical Murder Mystery Tour on Wednesday 27th, Thursday 28th and Friday 29th September.

This is a murder mystery with a difference as it includes fun interpretations of well known songs, dance in addition to the usual Who Done It! We are delighted to again perform our latest supper show at the Fiesta Plaza, Calle Republic Dominiaca, Orihuela Costa. Admission includes a one course meal and an evening of original entertainment where the audience will try to resolve the mystery of who murdered the obnoxious Tobias West.

We hope that everyone will become involved in solving the mystery, and of course there will be prizes for the lucky table who successfully determine the murderer.

This is a comic, light hearted, fun filled, Murder Mystery, which aims to have you chuckling at the choice of music and at some of the stories the various suspects offer about the victim.

As usual we are raising money for local charities.

Campoverde Theatre Group has decided to help two local charities Help at Home and The Samaritans. Both of these group offer essential support to people in time of need and they both

depend on donations to continue their excellent.

The Valencian Championships Club members Mary commenced this week, with the Dyer and Rosamund ladies and gents pairs playing at Stockell met in the all three venues. San Miguel quarter finals of the ladies were well represented, with Ladies singles many games played against their own team mates. Congratulations to Carol Rudge and Anita Brown for reaching the semi finals.

Their first game was against team mates Pat and Ann having to play an extra end, with Carol coming in for shot. Last years winners, Gail Willshire and Lyn Greenland also had brilliant games reaching the semi finals, their first game was even going into the last end, with Lyn taking shot. Good luck to you all for the semi finals. The the Ladies v Gents on Saturday 14th October; men didn't fair as well with no-one reaching the semi finals. Many games still to play.

Another great Wolfpack Society Day Winners Ted Ted Harris, Bob Eno, Paul Webster Webster and Nigel Cotton

After four days great bowling the Gran Alacant Mixed Rinks drew to a close on the afternoon of Friday 15th. On the previous Tuesday twenty four teams started the competition, the first three days were group stages.

Nearest the pin saw only one winner and that was Paul Webster with his great tee shot on the 17th.

Despite the valiant efforts of the challengers, the winner slipped under the radar to aggregate 32 points overall - Bob Eno recording his first trophy win with the Society. Nigel Cotton was pipped into second place with 31 points and Ted Harris was third with 29.

Four players came in with 28 points making this a close run competition, the last before our annual Captain’s Day. Back at The Royal Oak afterwards for a meal and a few beers the players celebrated a great day out. At close of play on Thursday eight teams were still in the competition. The last day was the semifinals of both the Trophy for the winners of the four groups and also the Plate for the second placed teams in each group. What superb bowling we saw on the last day. Of the four semi-finals there were two ties where extra ends were played.

The other two were also close with a brilliant last wood to win.

So it came to the finals with third and fourth place play off for the Trophy, this was won by June and Keith Jones, Sabrina and Russell Marks form San Luis who beat Pat and Dave McEwan, Linda and Cliff Plaisted from San Miguel.

The plate was won in a very close game by the Monte Mar team of Wendy and Iain Sheridan, Howie Williams and Graham Smyth who defeated

the San Luis team of Charlie Marigold,Les Bedford, Margaret and Neil Morrison. This was a nail-bitter of a game.

The Final of the Trophy was a closely fought game between Ann Holland, Kath Reid, Pam Lockett and Giuseppe Galelli from San Luis and Carole Donnellan, Sue Johnson, John Pooley and Den Birkett from Emerald Isle. The team from San Luis were the winners.

Also on Tuesday the ladies from the club held the usual cake stall. All the cakes and pastries were home made by the lady members. It was a great success with everything been enjoyed.

All those who came to watch were treated to some very high quality bowling and there was no onesided games on the final day. The Monte Mar Club would like to thank all those who participated during the four day event and particularly like to congratulate the winners of the trophy, it was good to have Monte Mar succeed in winning the plate.

Next year the event will be September 15th until 18th and entries are all ready being received, so book now to avoid disappointment.

Aguilon is a beautiful course with the most superb views of any of the courses we play, in most people’s opinion.

The gross 2 (for 50 euros) was not won and will be held over to the next game. We have a Team "Joker" Competition at La Serena, teeing off at 11:04am on Monday 2nd October. Full details will be emailed to all members.

We had perfect weather but only a small turnout, probably due to the hour and 20 minutes drive to get there. The scoring wasn’t very high, even though the course has a negative slope and most people find it quite tricky, despite the relative shortness.

The winners on the day were: First was Mick Hardy and David Archer with 41 points, Second Paul Hamlin and Bob Gallard with 38. Nearest the pins were won by David Archer, Paul Matthews,

Bowls - Gran Alacant Mixed Rinks Monday 11th September we had a practise day which included a competition open to all. The competition was won by Jan Gatward, Val Hignett, June Young and Ronnie Cairns all received a bottle of wine.

September 12th until 15th The Main Event.

With vacations and a high number of illnesses our numbers dwindled dramatically during the past month which was a shame given the glorious weather we enjoyed (excepting the torrential downpour which put a stop to any golf on August 29th !). However, flying in the face of this, a very decent number of players turned out to contest The Las Colinas Trophy which this year was played at Campoamor. Had it not been for sick notes received, the turnout would have been very decent indeed.

Many of the summer absentees had returned from their travels and the atmosphere in the coffee shop was back to normal pre round.

The conditions were excellent with the cool breeze welcome given the September heat. Play was at a good pace and there were several fine scores on the front 9 - the best of which was from Nigel Cotton who amassed 19 points to be the leader at the halfway stage. The trailing pack were close on

Carp R Us Fishing Club Autumn Series This week saw the club finally start the Autumn Series, having had to cancel the previous two matches. This was scheduled to be fished at Pedrera but with the levels dropping there, the shoreline is too muddy to use. Instead we fished El Bosquet with the match being dominated from the off by the returning Doug Hornblow who finally finished with 31.97kg caught on the pole using banded pellet. Second was Steve Fell with 9.61kg, third Tom Marshall with 6.34kg and fourth Steve Collins with 5.75kg.

Last week the club said goodbye to one of its longest serving members, Peter Kerr. Peter was a popular member of the club who always offered encouragement to others and was as pleased when the anglers round him caught as when himself was catching. He will be missed by everyone who knew him.

SMGS at Alenda - 20 September

Perfect weather and a shortened course in good condition met 32 members and 2 guests taking part in SMGS’s weekly get-together for a stableford competition at Alenda. Several excellent scores were returned, with 40 points for both Norman Padmore and John Osborne (who made hay on the nearest the pins, taking what may be for SMGS an unprecedented 3 out of the 4 on offer), Steve Higgins with 39 and Paul Guest, Keith Stevenson and Keith Wraithmell 38. Steve Higgins excellent play also helped him record a notable victory in the final of this year’s singles match play competition, overcoming rival Jamie Rorison for the trophy.

The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 3rd Keith Stevenson (38 on CB), 2nd Keith Wraithmell (38 on CB), and 1st Norman Padmore with 40 points.

Silver Category: 3rd Roger Webb (36 on CB), 2nd

Ray Smithers (36 on CB), and 1st Norman Cahill with 37 points.

Gold Category: 3rd Paul Guest (38), 2nd Steve Higgins (39), and 1st John Osborne with 40 pts.

Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to John Osborne (holes 3, 5 and 16), and Steve Higgins (12).

The Abacus was won by Paul Fisher.

The Best Guest prize went to Chris Farlow with 32 points.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society On 19th September, 16 members congregated in ideal conditions to play a 'Waltz' competition.

Four teams of 4 players lined up in a shotgun start, where the Stableford score on each hole is either counted for one person, followed by two persons on the next hole and then three. The scoring was extremely close with two points separating 1st and 4th. Third place was decided on count back not on the usual last nine hole score but the final six holes and then only by one pt.

Nearest the Pins, Hole 2 - John Wilby, Hole 8 - Bryan Watson.

Spanglish Golf Society In association with Sapphire Properties and Costa Blanca Green Fee Services at Campoamor on 20th September 2017.

For this months meeting the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 24 players visited the established course at Campoamor taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services.

The course was in good condition with greens faster than expected and was playing long with only a temporary green on the 6th hole to disrupt the day.

t was essential that Torry got back to winning ways at Los Arcos Stadium on Sunday evening, as earlier results meant that they had lost ground in the Preferente div table.

Orihuela ´B´ (who have taken the league slot of Albatera) had started the season with one win, one draw, and one defeat in their first 3 games, whilst Torry were still smarting following their collapse from a commanding 2 goal lead, to disappointingly concede 2 late goals and 2 points last week against Alicante Uni. The game itself got off to a slow start and for long periods never really got out of 1st gear. There was little to excite either set of supporters with few moments of any real quality.

However we were treated to one early moment of inspiration on 12 minutes when a Flores free kick floated over the heads of the Orihuela defence was met by Tenza at the far post from which the former Hercules man really should have done better.

Viti was inches wide with an Orihuela free kick on the half hour and from the restart Torry found themselves in front.

The best move of the half saw a Torry break upfield that was only broken up in the area when Walid was clattered in the back by Rafa Canales.

As the Orihuela defender went into the book for his clumsy challenge Torry’s Manu stroked the penalty past Aitor to put the visitors in front.

Buyo was called into action once again, to save from Chema, as the home side pressed for an equaliser that they probably deserved. But that proved to be their final opportunity of the game as the Torry defence stood firm during the final minutes to record their third 1-0 victory of the season and their first away from home.

The win moves the Salineros up to joint second alongside last weeks opponents Alicante Uni and just below Hercules on goal difference.

For those who can only get to watch Torry home matches, fear not, for on Sun 1 Oct (ko 5pm) the Salineros take on UD Ilicitana back at Vicente Garcia Stadium (check club website for any possible changes).
