RAFA pay tribute to “the few” RAFA Costa Blanca held a memorial for the 77th anniversary of the Battle of Britain on Friday morning at La Siesta Church.

Branch Chaplain Rev Terry Baxter led the service.

Chairman Tony Clarke and members of RAFA were joined by representatives of the Torrevieja and Orihuela

Costa branches of the Royal British Legion, The Royal Naval Association, the Royal Marines Association and ARPO (the Association of Retired Police Officers), at the memorial which consisted of a 45 minute service followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the adjacent garden of remembrance.

There was also representation

from the Torrevieja Ayuntamiento by the Councillor for Foreign Residents, Carmen Morate,

and director of the OARI office, Carlos González.

At the conclusion of the service the attendees retired to the adjacent Garden of Remembrance where, following a short prayer, officers and dignitaries laid wreaths and crosses in memorial.

Funds raised during the offertory were donated to the Wings Appeal, the RAF Association’s on-going fundraising campaign that runs throughout the year but the main collection of which has been taking place around the Battle of Britain week, with the support of the Managers at all local Iceland Stores.

The annual Battle of Britain Day, September 15, is dedicated to the large-scale aerial battle that took place during the Battle of Britain.

The clash was said to be described as the first major military campaign fought entirely by air forces with the British RAF deploying their fleet to tackle the 176 enemy aircraft that were destroyed during the raid.

On the day itself, two major

attacks were launched on London with smaller assaults on the southern coast in Portland and Southampton. The German aircraft were met by a fleet of RAF planes and many of the Germans reportedly turned straight around without deploying any bombs.

RAFA meet on the third Tuesday of every month at El Paraiso Restaurant, behind Carrefour Torrevieja, starting at 2.30pm.

Golden pendant dating back to 620 BC found on beach Underwater Archaeology students from Murcia University (UMU) have found a gold pendant dating back to 620 BC. The ornament is said to be similar to another locket found in Malaga from around the same date. The find was made by the students on the beach de la Isla (Mazarrón), according to Juan Pinedo, who was coordinating the course.

This is just the third time the Underwater Archaeology course has been run by the UMU in collaboration with the Department of Historic Heritage of Mazarron, and already it has revealed important advances in the study on the presence of Phoenician history on the Mediterranean coast.

This find makes the scholars think that Mazarrón was not only a place of transit for traders who were attracted by the area’s mineral wealth, but it could also indicate the presence of a port complex in this area of the Mediterranean.

"This is a tremendous leap because the usual pieces we have found such as amphoras, plates

and goblets, indicate a maritime trade. But we can now add to the possibility of a settlement made up of aristocrats of the time, “said Pinedo, who said that the piece belonged to some very wealthy family.

We then move onto the Ladies & Mens Singles. With last years Champion Frank Close having returned to the UK, we are guaranteed a different Champion. We have the LLB Champion of Champions Derek Toozer who will face Brian Kavanagh in the first round. Past Nationals Singles champion Martin Foulcer will face a tough first round match against CBUMA President Fred Willshire. While this years National Champion Brian Robertson will face Richard Osguthorpe.

The Ladies Singles looks to have some tough matches in the first round.

Last years Champion Jacqui Johnston is not competing in the singles.

Matches to watch - Sue Kemp will meet Gail Willshire, Lynne Bishop will play Nina McKenzie. Having retired from the National Singles due to the heat in May I will be hoping at least to complete my match against Claire Dye. With no Mixed Pairs being played this year next week will see the Mixed Triples & Mixed Fours being played. Semi Finals & Finals will take place at Emerald Isle from the 20th.

Eleven consecutive months of growth for San Javier Airport

San Javier airport has now recorded 11 consecutive months of growth, according to figures produced last week by Aena.

Buoyed by a strong throughput of tourists, the airport, during the course of 2017, has increased its activity by 10%, two points above the national average according to Aena Chairman, Jose Manuel Vargas During August, the airport also recorded an increase in the number of operations of 4.1%, also higher than the average of the state network.

Between January and August San Javier registered 841,049 passengers, putting it in line to exceed the million passenger mark by the end of the year. There have been 6,063 take-off and landing operations, an increase of 4.4%.

During the month of August, the airport increased its activity by 7.2% with 155,202 passengers, the great majority of which were British tourists. That month there were 1,041 flights, an average of 33 take-off and landing operations each day.

This situation contrasts with the fall that it experienced in previous years during the summer months, which was not congenial to the pull of the tourist sector and the traffic at the nearby Alicante airport.

The profitability of the facilities in San Javier are superior to those of other Aena operated terminals when compared with the number of flights which puts the airport in 19th position in the network, out of a total of 48.

However, it drops to 29th place when comparing the number of operations. At the national level, airports recorded more than 27.4 million passengers in August, an increase of 6.2%.

Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas terminal was first, with more than 4.95 million, followed closely by Barcelona-El Prat with more than 4.94 million. Alicante-Elche was positioned in fifth, with 1.6 million and an increase of 11.7%.

The arrest took place early on Wednesday morning when the local police attended a break in at Calle San Vicente Ferrer, after the homeowner had called, advising that someone was trying to break into the property through a window.

The agent who attended the call said that he saw the accused running from the house in the direction of la Senda Masquefa, the Masquefa Trail. He is said to have run through gardens, across terraces and fences, until he reached an area of marshland 2 kms away that was overgrown with reeds.

He is said to have hidden in a pipe which he where he was found and arrested by the police.

MEM has already been arrested twice this summer, the first in July when he was also chased across rooftops until he was eventually caught. He has since been handed over to the Guardia Civil.

Injured British woman rescued by fire brigade Firefighters and medical staff took over two hours to rescue a 180 kg British woman from her home in the urbanisation Jardines del Mar yesterday after she suffered a fall, causing a fracture to her hip.

According to sources from the Provincial Consortium of Firefighters the woman was lying on the upper floor of her bungalow and it was impossible to get her down the narrow flight of stairs.

Neither, because of her weight, could they take her through a window or onto the balcony with the hydraulic ladder, said a spokesman, as a result of which the rescue operation was very complicated.

They eventually removed her from the house on a board that was carried by five firefighters, being very careful that she did not suffer further damage. She was moved to the University hospital Torrevieja where she received treatment.

he mayor of San Fulgencio, Carlos Ramirez (Partido Popular), appeared in court on Wednesday, where he was accused of fraud.

He told the courts how the previous agreement was simply carried over and the payments continued to be made.

If found guilty he faces a nineyear penalty of disqualification from public office, the sentence that is being requested by the AntiCorruption Prosecutor's Office.

Ramirez did not arrive alone as, sat beside him on the bench, was the former councillor of sport, Pascual Sempere, and the President of Sporting Club San Fulgencio, Antonio Irles, who was in charge of the management of the schools and who had previously appeared on the PP list in 2011.

Both are facing the same penalty of the removal of rights to hold public office.

After the summer break, the next meeting of the San Luis Residents Association and Neighbourhood Watch will take place on Monday 25th September at Casa Ventura in San Luis at 4.30 pm.

At the last meeting not only was great concern expressed about the greater number of burglaries and attempted break-ins in the area of San Luis, La Siesta and El Chaparral but also the ever increasing amount of rubbish that is being dumped on our urbanizations instead of being taken to the Eco Parque.

Burglary, fly tipping and dumping rubbish on the road are all criminal offences so we are therefore pleased to say that both a representative from the council and also the police will be in attendance at the meeting to cover both subjects.

This will give an opportunity for residents to discuss the problem and find out what measures are being taken to attempt to put a stop to this nightmare.

There will, of course, also be time to raise any other matters.

All residents from San Luis, La Siesta and El Chaparral are welcome to attend the meeting and we are sure that your support would aid the advancement of events.

The prosecutor explained that the association to manage the sports schools was created a few days after Ramírez assumed the office of Mayor and was led by Irles, although the mayor said that this whole thing "had nothing to do with politics", but sports.

New Guardia Commander for Torrevieja A

ntonio José Leal Bernabéu has now assumed command of the Torrevieja Civil Guard. The new commander is in charge of one of the most important detachments in the country, with over 500 agents, 200 of which are assigned to Torrevieja and the remainder to municipalities across the region His previous tour of duty was with the Spanish mission of the United Nations on the border of Lebanon with Israel.

On Wednesday the Commandant was greeted in the town hall by Torrevieja’s mayor, José Manuel Dolón, where, following a short reception, the mayor, together with several councillors, heard his views on security in the region.

Torrevieja is the city with the highest demographic load in the country that employs the Civil Guard on security work, instead of the National Police, which usually carries out such tasks in urban areas.

At the meeting, which has lasted for more than an

hour, there was an opportunity to review the "security issues that most concern us," said the mayor, “such as the terrorist threat, the relationship between the Civil Guard and the Local Police and the other security bodies such as Civil Protection.

Other issues that would normally have an impact on the functioning of the City Council, such as Environmental Environment, protection, animal protection or housing occupancy were also discussed.

Following the meeting the mayor thanked the Commander for his visit and presented him with a salt boat.

Antonio Jose Leal Bernabé, is 36 years of age, a native of Tarragona, who was previously detached to the Spanish mission of the UN on the Lebanese border with Israel. The commander replaces Lieutenant Colonel Alfonso Martín who was in command of the barracks for eight years prior to assuming a new command in Burgos.

New routes from San Javier for Ryanair and Tui Airlines continue to schedule their flights in and out of San Javier regardless of what may happen with Corvera airport, the management of which, at this stage is out to public tender.

With just two companies currently involved I doubt that there is anyone who hazard a guess just if and when this procedure will be completed.

To all intents and purposes the airport of the Autonomous Community of Murcia does not yet exist.

So it was welcome news on Wednesday when Ryanair announced they they will launch a new route from Murcia to Frankfurt next April, which will feature two weekly links. The company said that the flights for this route, one of the first announced in the company's summer calendar 2018, can now be booked on Ryanair.com.

Tui Belgium, which is part of the TUI group, currently operating four weekly flights between Murcia-San Javier and the Belgian city of Antwerp, will resume its connection with the Brussels-Charleroi airport from the end of October with two return flights per week, every Monday and Friday.

The route with Charleroi, which had been replaced by that of Antwerp, is increasing the number of destinations operated by the Belgian company that, for the very first time, will schedule two destinations from Murcia.

Through its website www.tuifly.be, the selection of destinations offered from San Javier will increase to three next summer, with the addition of BrusselsZaventem, the main airport of the Belgian capital.

Ombudsman highlights dangers in children’s parks T

he Ombudsman of the Comunitat Valenciana, Jose Cholbi, has criticised the Ayuntamiento of Orihuela on the deplorable state of the many green areas and children's playgrounds on the coast, pointing out the "serious and completely unacceptable state of the parks for which remedial measures should be adopted as a matter of urgency".

The Catalan Ombudsman learned about the matter from the media, including The Leader Newspaper, in which a report was published on 1st May, which included "details on both the lack of maintenance and the poor health and safety conditions of them all", said Cholbi.

In response to the reports, he asked the City Council for information "to verify the legitimacy of the situation and its consequent dangers".

The municipal report accepted that the situation was as described: "The consistory recognised the lack of action and confirmed that it was due to a lack of budget, whilst at the same time heaping much of the blame on the builders and promoters, who they said in many cases had yet to complete the necessary procedure in handing the plots over to the council, following the completion of their developments.”

Rail connection for Alicante-Elche airport

Thus begins the countdown as the government now attempts, once more, to resolve one of the major issues that their airport has, in a year where it is expected to exceed 13 million passengers and where it has the ideal space to build the proposed railway station.

Indeed the European Commission itself says that all airports that exceed 6 million passengers a year should have a railway station which is connected to the nearest major city. Alicante-Elche airport can boast double that amount.

The Ombudsman highlighted "the seriousness and the inherent dangers of the situation which makes it absolutely essential to quickly allocate the necessary budget. He was also extremely critical of the time that it is taking many of the builders to hand the plots over to the council following completion of building works, whilst at the same time reminding everybody concerned of their liabilities with regard to accidents.

The original information was put together by members of FAOC (Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa-Alicante) who said at the time that they were becoming increasingly concerned about the deteriorating, and even dangerous state of many children’s playgrounds on the Orihuela Costa.

Their concerns were supported by photographs taken by the member associations in Villamartin, La Florida and La Regia, which they said demonstrated just a small sample of the problems that affect equipment in playgrounds all over the coast.

PHOTOGRAPHING PEOPLE, CHILDREN AND PETS

L

ast month I looked at shooting modes, including Aperture Priority (A on the Mode Wheel for most cameras, AV on a Canon). For the more adventurous this is frequently the best mode for this type of photography, although using the Portrait Scene Mode is a less complicated alternative, and often nearly as good.

However simple you want to keep it, there are a few issues you should consider before taking the shot that will potentially greatly improve the final picture.

LOCATION The background to the shot is the first important consideration. If it is a beautiful view across the Alps the view may be important to the picture, and the angle you take it immaterial. However, in many places there will be objects in the way that need to be avoided. So, before you take the picture, look around and decide the best angle to take it. In the first picture of the dog we have an ugly bit of wall, a third of a cushion, and the dog lost on patio stones that match its colour. How much better it would have been if the cushion had been moved, the dog placed on a dark carpet to give contrast and the wall avoided.

When you are out and about, check all around you to find the best backdrop first. Is there an ugly lamppost behind the person’s head, or a rubbish bin in the picture? Avoid parts of things creeping into the edge (the front of a car or corner of a table for example). Move round slightly, or maybe zoom in a bit, to avoid such objects altogether.

LIGHT Here in Spain we get a lot of harsh sunlight, which is often difficult to avoid, but is not the best situation for taking photographs. Strong sun creates very high contrast, which makes it difficult to avoid deep shadows on a person’s face.

Try if you can to put the subject in a shaded place, or at least avoid having the subject directly facing the sun. If this is not possible, stand a reasonable distance away from the subject and use the flash.

Although you already have a lot of light on the subject, the flash will provide filllight to the deep shadows on the face cre- Get down to their ated by the sun. level FOCUS ON THE EYES Whether you are taking people or animals, make sure the focus point is on the eyes. As human beings, it is always the eyes in a photo that we are initially drawn to. If you use the Portrait Scene Mode, or face recognition, the camera should do this automatically.

GET DOWN TO THEIR LEVEL With animals and children it is generally best to get down to their level, rather than point the camera down from above. This point is well illustrated by the two pictures of the dog. Even if the first one were cropped closer, you would still have a somewhat distorted look to the face.

The boy playing with the bricks, however, was photographed with the camera about 18” off the floor, and the result is much better.

COMPOSITION Apart from avoiding ugly and/or unnecessary objects in the photo, as already mentioned, good composition is important: • If it is a portrait, the subject should fill the overwhelming part of the photo.

• If it is a picture of somebody at a particular location, then the view is also important. So, although the person will be smaller in the photo, place them to one side, not smack in the middle.

• For portraits, try not to take them directly face on, which can look a bit like a prison or passport photo. Looking slightly to the side is much better. Tilting the head, and shoulders at an angle with the subject turning the head towards the camera, always looks more pleasing.

• Candid photos taken when the person is not expecting it will usually look much more natural than a “Say Cheese” pose.

•

Either take head and shoulders, or full length. Do not chop off hands or feet.

• If indoors, in daytime avoid sitting the subject with a window directly behind them. The Selected Viticulture of Bodegas Faelo

W

hat a wonderful day out on 12 September for fifty members and supporters of the Orihuela Costa and District Branch of The Royal British Legion.

Not quite the ‘high road’ but we nonetheless travelled north along the AP7 motorway to the city of Elche, where we enjoyed a fantastic visit and tour of the family owned and run winery, Bodega Faelo.

The wine tasting and food were

both excellent as we had a wonderful experience, with everyone agreeing that it was most certainly well worth the visit.

Our guide, Maria, spoke very good English, as she shared with us the passion of the wine making process in this third generation, traditionally run family vineyard, which produces only organic wines.

We were greeted at the gate by Maria and owner Jaime who made us all most welcome as

they immediately guided us to the shade on a very hot September day.

Maria explained how Grandfather Rafelo started making wine in the 1930s for his family, how it was then extended to friends which has now grown into a successful local wine business based purely on tradition, lunar grape cultivation and innovation.

The history of the bodega was fascinating and we would have

loved to be there at harvest time treading the grapes.

Unfortunately we missed it by just one week.

The picnic wine-tasting was a delicious way to savour the local flavours of wine and food. From 4 different styles of meats and sausage with manchego cheese, fresh bread and olive oil and then onto a luscious mixture of oranges, dates and fig cake. We really enjoyed the food.

The wine complemented the flavours starting with a really nice chardonnay, L’Alba del Mar, followed by a rosé, L’Alba de Faelo,. We then moved on to La Dama, a red crianza and then

Palma Blanca, a surprisingly good sweet muscatel. Although we tasted the standard Palma Blanca, when I left I purchased the ‘Especial Oro’ edition, which is the very same muscatel incorporated with flakes of gold, symbolising, we were told, happiness and prosperity, to be shared during those special moments.

This is most certainly not a mainstream winery but one that is run with passion and with soul. We spent a great time experiencing the whole process, and it is a visit that we would recommend to you all.

ewly arrived expats living in Spain and the Canary Islands will quickly learn that expat lives are punctuated with fiestas to celebrate the life of a particular saint or a special period in Spanish and Canarian history. Despite the irritation that fiestas can creep up on the unsuspecting expat, ruining plans to go shopping or to visit the bank, they are an intrinsic part of Spanish life and the wise expat soon learns to join in with the moment.

Initially, many expats think that the day of the fiesta is when it all happens. This is a big mistake and new expats quickly learn that fiestas actually begin during the late afternoon and evening on the day before. This is sensible, because it leaves plenty of time to dress up, do the cooking and to gather family and friends together before the actual event. In reality of course, for many people the actual day of the fiesta is spent recovering from the night before. Fiestas are fun and add to the rich fabric and pattern of life in Spain, as well as creating a pause from the usual frenetic pace of life. After all, in Spain and the Canary Islands, life is for living.

There has been a special fiesta for the whole island of Gran Canaria this week, but it is particularly special for the residents of a pretty town in the north of the island called Teror (not to be confused with terror!). The Virgin of the Pine is the patron saint of Gran Canaria and this fiesta is based upon the story of the Virgin Mary, who made an appearance many years ago.

It was on 8 September 1492 that an image of the Virgin Mary is said

to have appeared in a pine tree to Juan Frias, who was the first Bishop of Gran Canaria. Later, a large church was built near to where this pine tree grew, and it is still there today. The original pine tree died a long time ago, but there are more pine trees in the town near to the church. The Lady of the Pine, or Nuestra Señora del Pino, is said to possess healing qualities, and in true Catholic fund-raising tradition, it is possible to buy wax models of every part of the human body that can be offered for healing.

Everybody loves a party.

Visitors to the church will find a beautiful statue of the Virgin, which is taken out of the church in a religious procession every year on 8 September. On this day, people from all across the island come to this small town for a very big fiesta celebration. Religious or not, many visitors discover that when they are facing the statue of the Virgin it has a powerful and moving effect upon them. It is also rather extraordinary, since one side of the face is smiling and the other side is sad. The statue has many jewels, but in 1975 there was a robbery at the church and some jewels were stolen from the statue and never recovered.

Thousands of pilgrims joined the procession this week, and many arrived for celebrations on the eve of the fiesta. One of the customs are parrandas or groups of people who move between different places singing traditional songs; others join them to make the singing group larger. This tradition comes from the islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico, where many people from the Canary Islands moved to many years ago for work. They later returned home and brought with them some of these Caribbean islands’ cultures and traditions.

This year’s parrandas started with traditional music, but then went on to more modern reggaetron. The singing leads to people dancing until they are ready for refreshment in the local bars. These pilgrims

often arrive in Teror by car or bus, but many make the journey on foot, and some this year have been seen dancing in the middle of the GC21 road. Sensibly, for the safety of pilgrims, the main road to Teror was closed to traffic for the evening.

It is noticeable that the traditional grip of the Catholic Church upon people in Spain and the Canary Islands is fast diminishing, and it is rare to see many people attending church on Sundays as used to be the case, particularly during the Franco years. Despite this, it is clear that many Canarians maintain a strong spiritual basis in their lives and continue to be moved and inspired by stories of the saints and religious events, which they celebrate with vigour and enthusiasm.

Above all, they enjoy a good party!

“A burger for me and water for my horse"

A

photograph taken Pilar de la Horadada recently has gone viral on social networks. It shows a couple of young girls waiting in the ‘drive in’ queue at the town’s Burger King.

Nothing unusual in that you would have thought, apart from the fact that their mode of transport was not quite what you would expect.

The pair were patiently waiting for service as they sat on the back of a horse.

Hardly the Wild West I would agree but one that caught the young Burger King attendant completely by surprise as she heard the rhythmic clatter of hooves approaching.

Such a scene could hardly go unnoticed so the mandatory photo was taken and quickly uploaded since which time it has attracted over 100,000 likes.

The fast food outlet which is synonymous with the "American way of life," was opened by the mayor of Pilar, Ignacio Ramos, in April.

He was accompanied by the president of Burger King Spain, Gregorio Jiménez.

HELP Vega Baja Volunteer goes the extra mile!

Pat Milligan has been a volunteer with HELP Vega Baja for many years as part of their hospital visiting team, visiting patients at the Vega Baja Hospital. Wanting to do even more, Pat’s time is often taken up organising fundraising events for various charities and her events are becoming more and more popular with tickets in great demand.

On the 6th September, President of HELP Vega Baja, Michele Masson was handed a cheque for 365 euros for the charity by Pat at an event in Callosa de Segura. Over 80 people enjoyed a meal and entertainment by the ever popular entertainer, Woody.

Michele thanked those attending for their support and explained how the donation will be used to help people in the Vega Baja area who find themselves in difficult times.

She also asked everyone to join her in thanking Pat for all the wonderful work she does week after week not only as a HELP Vega Baja volunteer but also for the local community

Quirónsalud Offer Free Tests For Early Detection In Prostate Cancer The test is aimed for men over 40 years of age or from 40 years of age if there is family history.

The Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, launch a free campaign for the early detection of prostate cancer to mark World Day of this disease which takes place on the 15th of September. This initiative consists of a free PSA analysis followed by a previously made appointment for a consultation with urology.

Available to men living in the Vega Baja are of Alicante (Nationals and none nationals) from 45 years of age, if there is a family history, from 40 years of age. Previously made appointment required, for analytical it is not necessary to come on an empty

stomach and the tests will be held in Torrevieja Quirónsalud Hospital and medical centres in Quirónsalud Orihuela and Santa Pola .

The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness about the importance of prevention and early detection for a good prognosis of this disease. Our intention is to “inform and raise public awareness about prostate cancer as then there is a low risk of suffering with it. The aim is to inform citizens of the effective prevention for prostate cancer in men aged 45 years and over. A common barrier to prevention of this disease is the lack of information; therefore, we want to familiarize society that with a simple blood test prostate cancer cure is possible if detected in time, “explains Dr. Sven Petry, head of the Urology Unit Quirónsalud Torrevieja.

90% of these cases can be cured Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men in the world and the first in Europe. Each year about 25,000 new cases are detected in Spain, of which between 20% to 30% of patients diagnosed have relapsed in the dis-

ease because they have become resistant to hormonal treatments.

However, when detected early, 90% of these tumours can be cured, said Dr. Petry.

The PSA test.

PSA is a molecule known to be a marker for prostate cancer. When a tumour appears in the prostate PSA production is uncontrolled and increases its concentration in blood. It is considered a risk when PSA if greater than 10 ng / mL. When the PSA is between 4 and 10 ng / mL studies are recommended to investigate why it is high, without suspecting prostate cancer. The PSA test is also used to detect other prostate diseases such as benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate infection (prostatitis).

The PSA analysis test is easy to perform and non-invasive, it is a simple blood analysis. The results should be interpreted with caution.

To receive a negative test result "indicates that it is highly unlikely that a person has prostate cancer, although the reliability is not 100%. Therefore, it is recommended.

SABA finals at Vistabella T

he Finals of the newly named South Alicante Summer Knockout Competition were held at Vistabella Bowls Club from 8th to 10th September, the first year the competition has been run under the LLB. The Competition has been running since late March early April with games prior to the Semi Finals finishing early July and has seen just under, 120 games in total. The Semi’s started on Friday 8th September, in the morning, we had the Mixed Trips and Men’s Pairs disciplines both Mixed Trips games followed a similar pattern and after 11 ends it would have been difficult to pick a winner in either game, Violet Campbell, Jacqui Johnston and Fred Roberts led Beryl Regan, Andy Leggatt and Mike Regan by 9 shots to 8 and Deidre Leeming, Jason Prockopowycz and Derek Sale led Lynne Bishop, Charlie Watkins and Arthur Brown by 11 shots to 10 then it changed and after 18 ends, Fred’s team ran out 16 – 11 winners, while Arthurs team pulled themselves together to win 19 – 14.

The Men’s Pairs were a bit more one sided both finishing after 17 ends Phil Lockley and Dave Webb shocked the much fancied pairing of Terry and Peter Morgan winning 18 – 9 and Martin Foulcer and Pat Rafferty were on song beating John Pooley and Dennis Birkett 24 – 10..

The afternoon saw the semis of the Ladies Pairs and Mixed Pairs, in the Ladies Pairs Peta Rhodes and Carol Broomfield were pitted against Anita Brown and Brenda Rees in yet another tight fought game Anita and Brenda led most of the way up to the 7th end but by the 11th it was 9 all, they then won the next three ends to lead 12 -9 but Peta and Carol then dug in to finally run out 16 12 winners.

The other semi was slightly more one sided with Mary Whitelock and Ann Marie Stevenson proving just too strong on the day for Eileen McLaren and Ros Stockell Ann Marie and Mary winning 17 – 9. The Mixed Pairs probably produced the game of the day with Peter Morgan and Jacquie Johnston taking on Sue Milner and Gary Raby, Peter and Jacquie looked to be holding all the cards at 13 -4 up after 10 ends but Sue and Gary were determined not to give up and levelled at 16 all after 16 ends dropped 1 on the 17th but finished on a high with 2 on the last end to win 18 – 17.

The other game was between Brenda Jiggins and

John Rimmer who took on Mary and Phil Lockley, Brenda and John were always in command and won by 21 shots to 13.

Saturday Morning gave us the Semi Finals of the Men’s singles and Ladies Singles. In the Men’s singles Martin Foulcer took on Peter Morgan and seemed to be on his way to a comfortable win leading 17 – 10 after 17 ends but Peter gave him a shock and pulled back to 17 all after 23 ends Martin however then sealed it to run out a 21 – 17 Winner. The other Semi was between Drew Gerrard and Terry Morgan Drew raced to an 11 - 3 lead and despite Terry’s best efforts he was never able to close the gap Drew finally winning 21 – 13.

The Ladies Singles had one of those games that looked as if it was going to be close with Carol Rudge and Anita Brown battling it out at 12 shots all after 14 ends only for Carol to take control and win 21 – 13. The other game however was a real nail biter Carol Broomfield and Ann Eagle slugged it out for 20 ends to get to 16 all but then Carol took control and won 21 – 17.

In the Ladies Pairs game Peta Rhodes and Carol Broomfield led Mary Whitelock and Ann Marie Stevenson 14 – 13 with one end to go and sealed the title 15 -13 by picking up 1 on the last end.

Two teams from San Miguel took part in the Gran Alacant Rinks down at Monte Mar, with Pat McEwan, Linda Plaisted, Cliff Plaisted and Dave McEwan reaching the Semi Finals, playing against San Luis for 3rd and 4th place. New Honours Board for Horadada Bowls Club On Thursday 14th September a Presentation took place at Horadada Bowls Club, where Mr Charlie Perkins a representative of Design Right, presented the new Honours/ Memoriam boards to the President of the club Mr Barry Evans.

Mr Evans thanked him and also Barry Glazier and his team, from local printing and signwriting company Design Right, for all their efforts in pro-

viding and fitting the new boards and assured them they would be a fitting tribute to all Members Past and Present.

In the coming days the board will be fitted to the front of the bowls club office where past and present club champions, and former members who have passed away, will be suitably honoured and remembered.

Paddy’s Point Golf Society - Seve Trophy We had a good turnout of 40 players for our trip to El Valle playing for the Seve Trophy. The course was in good condition and the greens true but fast. Our Chairman, Paul Cullen, came out on top. Well done Paul it's been a while!

The season will finish one week later this year as a 3- week break over Christmas and New Year was voted in at the AGM. The last league game before Christmas will be on Thursday 14th and the first game of 2018 is on January 11th so feel free to book your hollies now!

For those of us who are staying put in our beloved Spain, an extra competition has been added in for a bit of Christmas festivity on Thursday 21st Dec. It will be a mixed pairs competition played all on one night at 2-4 venues in Villamartin Plaza (depending on the number of entrants). All players must be registered in the

league but can obviously be paired up from different teams.

The committee would like to remind all teams that fair play is expected and for all players to familiarise themselves with the updated rules available in the team pack. We will be taking a firm hand with any team who plays a non-registered player or reschedules a game when they have at least 4 players available.

As with previous seasons, the league will split into division A and B after the first half. With new sign-ons for many of the teams this year it could be an interesting season with all to play for at the top and the bottom! Some shining stars have left to play with the big boys in the Torrevieja league but they have been replaced with new talent as yet untested. El Capitan have spiced up their side, hoping to top the league this year with two new signings and the Jackals also have a new kid on the block as do several other sides.

SMGS Eclectic at Lo Romero Golf

Our very popular annual eclectic competition over 5 games has been held this year at one of the nicest courses on our circuit, that's Lo Romero near Pilar de la Horadada. It's a super layout and is always presented in tip top condition.

Being the final game of the series, it was a date that's been in a few diaries as the half a dozen contendors did their upmost to improve even a few points on their cumulative previous efforts.

All cards, needless to say, were kept close to chests during the very welcome “apres golf” drinks – no-one was spilling the beans on how they'd fared on the critical holes. All will be revealed at the end of this month during our annual presentation evening 30 of us attended the day with the following results:. La Marina GS The Masters Trophy On a baking hot day we met at Bonalba to compete for the La Marina Masters Trophy. In general, scores reflected the oppressive conditions, although the Scottish contingent seem to revel in the high temperatures. Despite this two of the first three places went to Sassenachs with Barry Thorogood finishing in third place with a creditable 33 points ,just behind Bill Stobo’ s 34 points. La marina master for 2017, however, was serial winner Gerry McCabe with 37 points, ultimately heading for his eighth handicap cut of 2017.

All other prizes went north of the border, with Graeme Buchanan taking two ntp's and the 2's pot and Alan Craig the other two ntp's.

orry manager Pedreño went into a 3rd consecutive home match, safe in the knowledge that he had a full strength squad to pick from. Maximum points from their opening 2 matches has given the team a much needed confidence boost, banishing those relegation blues they had to live with through a summer of discontent.

Visitors Alicante University have had an identical start to the season as their hosts, so something had to give if 100% records were to be preserved in what was being billed by local soccer aficionados as the Preferente match of the day.

It was the home side who were much the livelier in the early exchanges as they took the game to Alicante.

Indeed inside the opening minutes, had Manu squared the ball into the path of the unmarked Ramiro rather than attempt an angled shot Torry could have taken an early lead.

A shot from Dani tested Buyo on 10 minutes. The Torry keeper was again called into action to save from a fierce Cama effort moments later but that was probably the last occasion that we saw any real threat from the visitors during the opening half The home side were certainly in the ascendancy with Juanpe running riot down the right, as full back Dani had no answer. The one aspect that did let the Salineros down, however, was that final ball which went astray rather too often. But even with that drawback the home side were calling all the shots.

A goalmouth scramble on the half hour saw Carbo save well at his right hand post when Ramiro looked to have squeezed his shot in, but as the

striker was bemoaning his luck the lively Juanpe smashed home from close range to put the home side in front

one back for Alicante on 70 mins after which substitute Llorca levelled the scoreline with a low diving header as the game entered the final 15 minutes.

Centre back Zaragoza was able to double the advantage moments later when he rose above the Alicante defence to head home from a Manu corner.

But this was a game that the home side threw away.

At that stage the game was in the bag, or so we thought, but a revitalised Uni side gave Torry much more to think about in the 2nd period.

Buyo was called into action to save low from Brice on 50 minutes while at the other end no one from the Torry front line could connect with a Manu cross when only the slightest deflection was required.

36 members and guests found their way to what is now becoming the jewel of a golf course in Rojales. As reported last week, there are always improvements being made and this month was no different, it appears that a new elevated tee is being constructed on the 8th. The course was found to be in good condition with the greens recovering well from the recent maintenance. A welcome back to Swedish member Norbert Spaniol, his party piece for the day was to hit his tee shot from the 16th tee to the back of the 14th green! Some 60+ meters from his intended fairway.

That’s quite a slice Norbert! For those of you that know the course Norbert is left handed, the 2’s pot will now be carried over to our next competition at Altorreal. In the interim almost

40 members and guest will make what is now becoming a frequent trip to Las Pinaillas this time for our 2 day competition.

On to today’s results. N.T.P.’s hole 5 NADA, hole 11 Ole Rong, hole 15 Kenneth Persson, hole 17 NADA. Best guest was Dutch Daphne with 38 pts, Bronze category, 3rd N. Allen 32 pts, 2nd A. Goslan 32pts. 1st R. Nilsen 32 pts. all decided on handicap.

After controlling for long periods the defence fell asleep on just two occasions, and as so often happens at this level of football, they were duly punished. Two points that Torry could regret losing at the business end of the season.

Definately a game of two halves, both of which were dominated by the home side.

Next weekend, for what we think will be a Saturday game, Torry travel to the Polideportivo Municipal La Murada where they face Orihuela CF B. Check club website for details.
