Much ado about nothing!

In

recent years the Orihuela Costa has been rather extravagant with the number of councillors it has got through on the coast, having recycled

rather more than might normally have been prudent.

Some have come and gone because of their political persuasion, others have been sacked because they were not particularly good at the job but, of them all, there is one that stands out above all others, Los Verdes Councillor Martina Scheurer, who, for the

two years that she was in office, put her heart and soul into what was essentially a rather unthankful appointment.

Buffeted from all sides of the

political spectrum during her tenure she stuck religiously to her task.

She became enormously popular with her constituents, always having time to listen to their concerns, and most importantly, unlike many of her predecessors, she maintained an ‘open door policy’ and was extremely transparent in everything she did.

Her role came to an end in May 2015 when the Partido Popular took control of the Orihuela council following the Municipal elections.

One of the more time consuming, and perhaps contentious, tasks that she undertook during that time was the supervision of the tender process, and the eventual appointment of Chirunguitos del Sol, to manage the Costa’s Beach Bars.

At the time the process was not without controversy but with only one of the four bidding companies meeting the standards required by the tender document the decision seemed fairly straight forward. Of course we all know in Spain that is never quite the case.

Pedro Mancebo, a previous councillor for the coast, said that the inclusion in the tender document of a requirement for the operator to hold “Q” accreditation for quality was unfair, as only Chirunguitos del Sol was in possession of such certification.

What he failed to mention was that two of the companies were neither in possession of ISO 9000, one of the very basic necessities, so they would have failed to meet the criteria on that score alone.

Controversy also surrounded the fact of that Chirunguitos del Sol

had existing debts with the town hall. This was a payment discovered by Scheurer herself which the council had overlooked. It was later clarified to be an outstanding charge by the Canon de Costas, rather than a debt, which had never previously invoiced.

The new information prompted the company to clear the outstanding balance, in excess of half a million euro, which would otherwise have been lost to the public purse but for Scheurer’ s diligence.

Nevertheless the recent phone call to the former councillor from the Guardia Civil, asking that she make a statement outlining the process followed with the award of the Beach Bar Management Tender came as somewhat of a surprise.

“I was simply asked to make a statement,” she said, “which I did on the following day along with Arturo Jose Lopez Gomez, the Council’s Contracts Executive and Thomas Herteux, the manager of the successful operating company. However, many of the statements made in the local press were absolute nonsense. At no time were any of us threatened with arrest, in a process that is nothing more than evidence gathering.”

Of course there are many municipalities across Spain that require their Beach Bar Management companies to be in possession of the Q for Quality Accreditation. Orihuela is no different. The decision to include the condition was taken by a council committee made up of representatives from the coast, with members appointed by contracts and by the legal department. Scheurer was sim-

ply a member. Not one of them was aware of the credentials held by any of the bidding companies. The inclusion of the Q for Quality Accreditation was nothing more than a decision made to ensure the provision of a superior service to Orihuela’s beachgoers.

“Indeed, although tenders were submitted only by four local companies, there could have been many more. There was absolutely nothing to stop Management Companies from adjacent Municipalities or Regions entering into the process so to suggest that we were unfairly favouring Chirunguitos del Sol is absolute nonsense,” said Scheurer.

With well over a dozen former councillors and council employees, including a former mayor, still to be questioned by the Fiscal it is not yet clear if the courts will decide that there is a case to pursue.

Of course with the tender process about to be entered into once again, in the next year or so, the whole nonsense could be nothing more than an effort by the companies previously rejected to muddy the waters for Chirunguitos del Sol, a business practise that is all too common, especially here in Spain.

But for her part, Scheurer believes her conscience to be absolutely clear. “Everything was meticulously checked at the time to ensure compliance. The tender process was painstakingly followed and if the contract was awarded to Chirunguitos del Sol it was only because they were the best company for the job,” which they have since gone on to prove.

Communication is mostly via telephone, free of charge, although there are facilities for face to face meetings and email contact. We are contactable 24 hours, 7 days a week for any English-speaking person who needs our help. We also assist Spanish speaking callers, via our network of listeners based in the British Consulate in Madrid.

Samaritans listen to people who are either lonely, or feel themselves unable to express their feelings, concerns, or problems to those around them, The Samaritans' listener does not advise or counsel, but merely provides an empathetic ear, which has proven to be an effective emollient over the many years of the Samaritans' existence (since 1953 in UK).

Volunteer listeners are drawn from all backgrounds, all

ages, and all walks of life. "Following a successful interview, new Listener Volunteers are given an intensive Initial Training Package, consisting of ten Modules, delivered by our experienced Training Team. The aim is to equip Trainees with the skills they will need when supporting our Callers, whether by telephone, face to face or email.

Once completed, training continues by way of ten supervised duties with a Mentor who provides encouragement and support throughout. In all, new Listener Volunteers receive around 46 hours of training, with emphasis always on Listener welfare and support."

Anyone who feels the need for emotional support, encouragement, and lacking in self-confidence will benefit by talking to a Samaritans listener. A telephone call to the Samaritans could last a few minutes or even longer, as callers are never rushed.

Hospice Working Party holds discussions on Orihuela Costa The group are currently looking for a site as well as financial backing for the project.

and an even smaller number Palliative Care Teams so the possibility of providing a facility that would deliver high quality care to terminal prognosis patients is long overdue.

The most recent discussions took place last Tuesday at the Orihuela Costa Town Hall where a ‘Hospice Working Party’ was chaired by the Councillor for International Residents, Sophia Alvarez.

Although there are such institutions scattered up and down the coast, none are situated within any of the local municipalities. The establishment of such an institution locally would be warmly welcomed and I have no doubt would be well supported by the abundance of local charities.

he Leader Newspaper can exclusively reveal that talks are currently underway amongst representatives from a number of interested authorities to establish a hospice for the terminally ill here in the Orihuela Costa.

Also part of the discussion group was the President and Secretary of the German Speaking Association, the body responsible for putting the concept forward, along with such heavyweights as the Director of the Casa Verde Foundation, the Director of Casa Verde, Pilar de la Horadada and the Director of Elche /Torrevieja University Hospital.

The debate centred on such concerns as the location and costs of the building project along with staffing, support and ongoing financial matters.

The councillor for International residents said that she had a number of building locations in mind, all of which were on the coast. She also agreed to look at possible investors which she suggested might not be too difficult to find.

Other group members were tasked with investigating the likely uptake in such an establishment along with the projected demographic for the coastal population.

Members are to report back at the next group meeting which will be held next month.

Previous meetings have involved the Director of the Orihuela Costa Centro Salud and the German Consul, both of whom have offered their unequivocal support to the project.

Twelve arrests for Aguamarina’s Italian Job

T

he Guardia Civil has now arrested twelve people for their involvement in the murder of a 49-yearold Italian citizen Claudio Lanfranchi, from Ardesio, a small village of just over 3,000 people, in the north of the country close to the border with Switzerland.

The victim was suffocated and beaten to death at his home in Playa Aguamarina on the Orihuela Costa, at the end of January last year. The arrests took place in several locations including Germany, France and Romania.

The crime itself is understood to have been committed by four hooded men who beat him up, robbed him and left a female friend tied up and gagged.

In his statement to the press on Thursday morning the Commander of Alicante’s Guardia Civil said that eight men and four women from Kosovo, Rumania, Bulgaria and Spain, aged between 23 and 40, have been detained for the crime, in which they had varying degrees of involvement. The charges include murder and robbery with violence and intimidation, all of which were committed at the victim's home, in the Orihuela Costa.

The Guardia attended the scene following a call from neighbours at dawn on 25th January, 2016 , When they arrived at the house they found the 49 year old Italian man with obvious signs of having met a very violent death.

They also found another victim in the house, a woman of Romanian

scene quickly led the investigators to one of the possible culprits, an individual of Kosovo nationality, identified as EC, who fled his home in Torrevieja just hours after the murder. It is thought that he was about to fly to Germany along with his Spanish girlfriend.

On 30 May 2016, following further investigations, EC was detained in Dusseldorf (Germany), extradited to Spain and remanded in prison as another of the suspects. He was moved to Spain following the issue of a European Arrest Warrant.

As a consequence of the extensive investigations, three more detentions took place, beginning with MM, on October 24, 2016 in Fuensalida (Toledo), DI, on November 15, 2016 in Torrevieja and on the following day, the arrest of DCC in Tavernes de Valldigna (Valencia).

There were further arrests in Torrevieja, Rumania and Bulgaria as a result of which it is thought that all four perpetrators of the actual murder are now in prison in Spain and awaiting trial.

It was subsequently found that Lanfranchi had a past of drug problems having previously been convicted of a drug related offence in 2003 in Bergamo. nationality, who had been tied up and gagged before she was then left to witness the beatings and murder. After she recovered she was able to provide the agents with information of the morning’s events.

She said that the couple were sleeping in the house when four hooded men burst into the bedroom. After immobilising the man, they forced her into the dining room while they spoke to the man in Italian and Romanian, repeatedly shouting in Italian at Lanfrachi, “Where is the cocaine”?.

The house itself was completely ransacked, cupboards destroyed, mattresses were cut open and the garage was also thoroughly searched during the attack.

They then started to beat the man with extreme violence, asking for money and drugs that they insisted were secreted in his home. The beating was so severe that the man died. However, as the autopsy later revealed, the death was actually caused by asphyxiation, as the robbers had used a knotted sheet which they gradually tightened around his throat.

It appears that the gang failed to find the drugs although they did steal a mobile phone, a luxury watch, and about 3,000 euros in cash.

Mr Lanfrachi had lived on the Orihuela Costa for a little over a year and was looking to put down semi-permanent roots. He had recently made appointments with several local Realtors, and was said to be viewing property, valued over a million euro in the area, during the week around his violent death.

British WW2 bomb detonated off Tabarca T

he World War 2 Depth Charge that was found in the Marine Reserve just off the coast of Tabarca was eventually detonated on Friday afternoon by explosive experts from the Spanish Armed Forces.

The mine was discovered by members of a local diving club nestling on the seabed at 29 metres on Sunday. Members of the Underwater Activities Task Force (GEAS) travelled to the reserve and confirmed that it was a depth charge, possibly dropped by an aeroplane that was hunting submarines during World War II A total of 8 navy divers took part in the operation, first inspecting both the site and the device to ensure that it was safe to be moved.

There was also a naval patrol vessel deployed to the area to ensure that sightseers were kept away.

The mine was raised from the floor by a series of balloons before it was eventually moved by the divers to a sandy area 3 miles of the coast of Santa Pola. It was dragged on the end of a rope for about 2 miles by a naval patrol vessel, to an area for detonation.

The decision to move the device was taken so as not to cause damage to the reserve, a rich and protected ecological area, teeming with fish and other sea life.

The whole procedure was followed from very early in the morning

by Government delegates, Juan Carlos Moragues and José Miguel Saval, who both declared themselves delighted with the outcom.

“It was important to get it away from the marine reserve,” said Moragues. “There are many small fragile animals such as gorgonian fans, lace corals and sponges - some of which are hundreds of years

old and it was important that they weren’t damaged or disturbed.”

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries had earlier banned diving in the waters off the island, for a distance of two miles, approximately 4km, from the Marine Reserve of Tabarca and La Llosa, until the Navy divers were able to deactivate the charge.

The Guardia Civil marked out the area and set up a permanent monitoring device to warn approaching boats and ships. Although diving was forbidden, visitors were still able to travel to the island.

Experts say that the charge was left following an attack on a German U77 submarine on 28 March 1943 by 48 Sqn RAF who were based in Gibraltar.

Although it was partially damaged, the submarine remained underwater, so the aircraft requested help from a second plane, a Lockheed A-28 Hudson from 233 Squadron which located the damaged U77 when it next came to the surface, about 30 miles northwest of the first attack.

During the 2nd attack off Tabarca, which lasted just over an hour, the Lockheed launched four depth charges which, according to the incident report written by the pilot, fell to within five meters of the submarine. Just before it sank the commander of the U77, Oberleutnant zur See Otto Hartmann, ordered the vessel’s evacuation, but of the twenty sailors who were on board at the time, only nine managed to survive.

Four Brits arrested for murder of La Zenia washed up corpse

A

joint operation between the Guardia Civil and Merseyside Police has resulted in the arrest of four Britons, two in Liverpool and another two in Xàbia, on money laundering charges linked to the kidnapping and murder of Francis Brennan, the man whose body, sealed in plastic, was washed up onto La Zenia beach in 2014.

This brings to an end the third phase of Operation Brennan which has been an ongoing investigation for over three years. Phase one concluded on December 26, 2014, with pahese two coming to an end on April 21, 2015.

from the the Civil Guard and British Police have carried out five home raids, two in Liverpool, in which they seized money, jewellery and 60 kilos of drugs and three in Spain, where agents seized 30,000 euros, 40,000 pounds, a quantity of valuable jewels and two vehicles.

As a result of information gathered from the raids they have also been able to block bank accounts and seize properties to the value of 2 million euros.

In March 2014, the corpse of a young male was washed up onto La Zenia Beach wrapped in plastic. It was later identified as Francis Brennan, 25 years old, of British nationality.

It was found that the deceased had been abducted by three men on January 24, 2014 in the Xàbia. They had identified themselves as policemen, bundled him into a vehicle before kidnapping him and holding him for what was alleged to be a debt that he had incurred related to the trafficking of drugs with Paul Scott, another British dealer who was arrested as he flew into the UK from Holland on board a light aircraft Scott was facing life imprisonment in England for the importation of more than 40 tons of cocaine.

As the murder investigation continued the Guardia Civil next arrested 54year-old Englishman Paul Graham Monk in Xàbia, who was allegedly

involved in the abduction and murder of Brennan, as well as activities related to drug trafficking and money laundering.

Monk, one of the 10 most wanted criminals in the UK was discovered on an urbanization of Xàbia, where he was hidden. The Civil Guard established a surveillance device on the house, and once located he was immediately arrested.

In his house, the Guardia found 125,000 euros in hidden cash, a pistol with silencer, a forged Slovenian passport and documentation relating to the crime that was being investigated and which led to the beginning of the third Phase of Operation BRENNAN. Paul Graham has recently been sentenced in UK to 18 years in prison for drug trafficking found guilty of shipping cocaine into the United Kingdom to a value of 31 million pounds.

Throughout the investigation, there has been outstanding teamwork between the Guardia and the British Police which has been fundamental, to the success of the by the joint teams working together in both countries.

150,000 pets abandoned annually in Spain A total of 104,447 dogs and 33,335 cats were taken into care by Animal Protection Agencies in Spain last year, according to an 'Affinity Foundation Study on abandonment and adoption of animals,’ which warns that the figure of abandonment is now stable and is likely to remain at a similar level in 2017. They add that they are disappointed with the figure which they consider to be far too high.

Over 100,000 of the abandoned animals are dogs

Among the main reasons it is so high, according to the report, is the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens, followed by the changeable behaviour and abandonment of many dogs at the end of the hunting season.

Affinity Foundation director Isabel Buil says that the figures are disappointing, especially after the downward trend over the last eight years. She calls for a greater intervention of both the public and the private sectors, to "fight against this situation".

The foundation has carried out studies on the abandonment of animals for the last 20 years as it works together with the Observatory of Justice and Animal Law to achieve a change in

Guardamar’s Neglected Residents A Residents Meeting will be held on 29 July at 7pm

or over a decade the area in Guardamar del Segura known as Sector Sup-7 has been neglected by the Town Council. Despite repeated requests during this period by the owners and residents of this area, nothing has been implemented on a regular basis to keep their streets clean and the area maintained.

Just like the property owners and residents across Guardamar del Segura the people of this area also pay their taxes to the Town Hall.

However, compared with the public services and attention received everywhere else, it is almost as though Sector Sup-7 has been abandoned and forgotten.

The people of Sup-7 have now had enough and a Facebook page has been created to give them a voice. In a relatively short space of time, it already has approaching 400 followers. Two examples of the many photographs showing the shocking neglect of the area are shown below. There are also numerous photos of blocked drains, broken street paving, dog's mess adjacent children's play areas, broken sewerage covers, and many irate comments are also published.

There is a meeting to be held on the 29th July 2017 at 19-00 hours on the top car park of the MasyMas supermarket.

These people only want their area to be given the same amount of attention and treated with similar respect as the rest of Guardamar by the Mayor and his Council.

For those in peril on the sea The Virgen del Carmen leaving the MOE in Cabo Roig on Saturday morning

T

he Día de la Virgen del Carmen was celebrated in many coastal towns and villages throughout Spain last Saturday.

In Cabo Roig the flower-adorned effigy of the Virgin Mary was carried from the MOE Barracks, Destacamento Teniente Morejón, by members of the military, down to the Cabo Roig Marina where it was met by a flotilla of decorated boats.

After prayers for all those at sea and their families, the statue was loaded onto a cruiser and paraded

around the marina before the flotilla set off, horns sounding and music blaring, on the short journey south to the Campoamor Marina.

According to the legend, the Virgin is responsible for keeping the waters around the shore clean and safe; with many devotees refusing to swim until after this date.

The feast day is amongst the most important celebrations in Spain, and is symbolically acknowledged as the day on which everyone prays for protection for ‘those who work the sea’.

the Spanish Civil Code so that the animals cease to be considered simply as objects and more as pets.

Currently the Civil Code makes animals susceptible to misuse on the part of their owners. They are simply possessions that are owned, with little consideration given to their welfare or their happiness.

Among the positive aspects, however, is that in 2016 the percentage of dogs that could be returned to their owners increased by five points to 20 percent and in the case of cats, the figure remained stable at 4 percent.

Buil has reaffirmed the importance of promoting the use of the microchip for the correct registration and identification of the animal. Currently the number of animals with microchips that arrived at animal sanctuaries is only 30% of dogs and 2% of all cats To prevent and minimize the impact of pet abandonment, the Foundation director emphasises that identification, sterilisation and adoption are the keys factors to reducing the population of abandoned animals in the future.

Compromis asks Fomento to remove motorway tolls

C

ompromis Territorial Senator, Carles Mulet, has requested that the State open the toll roads in the Valencian territory in the face of "the complete saturation of state-owned highways that cross the territory which are incapable of safely absorbing and channelling the additional traffic, that comes to the region during the summer holiday period, adding to that of the local population.”

He says that the situation is "unsustainable" and "dangerous" in most tourist areas "so the solution is to provide users with an alternative to the increasingly dangerous N332.

In Alicante in the municipalities such as Orihuela and Torrevieja connected by the N-332, tourists can spend over an hour to travel just a few kilometres which is totally unacceptable and where, according to a report from the Ministry of Public Works there were a total of 239 accidents in 2015 If it is possible in Lleida on the AP-2, the AP-7 in Girona, or in Tarragona, in León, Malaga or the Navalcarnero, an entrance to Madrid via the R5 on Sundays and holidays then why can the same concessions be made here on the coast where traffic becomes seriously congested during the summer, and where instead of encouraging the use of the motorway the authorities hike up the prices in order to take advantage of the incoming tourists.

The government has announced, however, that it will take control of the road, but not until 2019! At that time the tolls will be scrapped which will then see many more drivers using the AP7 and taking some of the pressure off the N332. So why can’t the move be brought forward by a couple of years we ask!

“Quite simple,” says Cayetano Portugués, spokesman for Compromís in Orihuela. “It seems that yet again, the PP government do not care about our interests or our needs."

Province has shortage of more than 500 police officers T he province of Alicante currently has a combined shortfall of more than 500 agents of the Guardia Civil and the National Police.

According to the establishments of both organisations, in the Alicante province there should be 2,387 national policemen and 2,685 civil guards, or 5,072 officers in total, if the police units are complete and of the necessary strength to operate with their optimal numbers. But the truth is that in the National Police there are only 2,066 active officers (321 fewer) and in the Guardia 2,470 (215 less than the numbers required).

The figure shows a shortfall of 536 agents for Alicante, although this situation is repeated across all Spanish provinces, with shortages in all, with Alicante as the tenth with the greatest needs, behind Madrid, Seville, Valencia, Barcelona, Baleares, A Coruña, Malaga, Zaragoza and Tenerife.

The data was provided following a question in the Cortes Generales (Parliament), by the socialist deputy Antonio Trevín, which revealed that there are 22,000 fewer agents in Spain than the established numbers required.

The deficit is higher in the National Police, with 64,487 agents currently active, 13,651 fewer than the 78,138 optimum strength, while the Civil Guard numbers show the current established strength at 85,263, but currently there are only 76,928 active, 8,335 fewer than the number required. A total of 21,986 under the established strength of the two forces.

Madrid "leads" this deficit with 2,800 less understrength, followed by Seville with 1,268 and Valencia with 1,236. And in Alicante it is noticeable that the lack of personnel is greater in the National Police, with 321 less, despite having a smaller staff than the Civil Guard, where there are "only" missing 215 agents.

As usual, food took centre stage, with various salads provided by those attending to accompany roast chicken, and several dishes for the non meat eaters, followed by trifles, apple crumble, several kinds of cake, and the biggest fruit salad in the world.

Despite having eaten more than an elegant sufficiency, the evening continued with the petanca and Jenga tournaments. The hero of the hour was Tom, who managed to be a finalist in both competitions, which drew to a close as the sun went down, as it must, even on the longest day of the year.

Local Police praised for prompt action

140 and counting for Easy Horse Care E asy Horse Care Rescue Centre has applauded Almoradí police for their prompt action in rescuing a young donkey stallion found abandoned on the city’s streets last week.

“We can't praise Almoradí police enough for acting swiftly yet again to save this animal,” said co-founder Sue Weeding. “Their quick action is evidence that our work to build relationships with local authorities and improve animal welfare practices here in Spain is slowly but surely paying off.”

Rescued on July 7, the donkey has no identification tags and his history is therefore unknown.

“We believe he's quite young, he's very hungry and he has cruel scarring across his nose from wearing a too-tight halter,” Sue said.

Under the centre’s responsible equine ownership policy, the donkey, which has been named César, will be castrated as soon as weather cools enough to allow the operation to be conducted safely.

César is the 140th equine saved by the Rescue Centre since 2008, with Sue and Rod Weeding currently caring for 106 horses, ponies and donkeys at their Rojales sanctuary.

The latest rescue came as Rod finished digging the trench for the next section of a 218-metre secure boundary wall being built to protect the rescued animals following a spate of break-ins at the sanctuary. Rod, aged 68, was forced to dig the knee-deep trench by hand after the centre’s aging digger broke down.

Generous supporters have so far contributed more than €18,500 to fund the wall’s construction, but the Weedings called for further donations to raise the final €1500 needed to ensure the project can be completed. Donations can be made at:

Half a kilo of cocaine abandoned in San Vicente As far as they go it was just an innocuous accident, as two vehicles collided on the University roundabout in in San Vicente del Raspeig. Nothing too strange in that you would have thought, but when the 43 year old driver who caused the accident jumped out of his car, immediately abandoned it and sprinted off on foot into the Uni campus, alarm bells started to ring for the injured party.

The victim was so astonished he said, that his reaction was to give chase as he too disappeared into the University garden at a sprint, in pursuit of the alleged offender.

As he called out to bystanders the perpetrator was stopped and dragged to the ground by University security staff At the same time, a witness to the collision and the flight of the driver, called the Local Police. When the agents arrived on the scene they quickly realised that something was not quite right and on checking inside the boot of the vehicle they found a plastic bag containing 490 grams of cocaine.

The 43-year-old man, a resident of Alicante, was arrested and currently remains in police custody.

‘Letters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper.

There are many such cave homes throughout the Canary Islands, with the most villages made up of cave homes located in Gran Canaria, where the excavation of cave homes into the mountain side remains a feature of the natural landscape. One of the most appealing features of cave homes is that it is unlikely that air-conditioning in summer and heating in winter are needed, since they remain at a steady temperature throughout the year. How’s that for energy efficiency?

op 20 Caves to Rent in the Canary Islands” screams one advertisement, followed by “Hundreds of Cave Homes to Buy in the Canary Islands” shouts another. Well, I guess it all makes good copy, but is living in a cave just another symptom of ‘reverse one-upmanship’, and something to brag about to colleagues at work? “Oh, I’m just off to the cave for the weekend.”

During the Spanish conquest of the Canary Islands, the native aborigines, the Guanches, were considered to be living at a primitive level by European standards. The Guanches wore animal skins for clothing, made stone tools for hunting and lived in caves. Well, if that’s not primitive, what is? It is strange how with the passage of time, reverting back to cave dwelling is seen as ‘cool’ (in more ways than one) and is now a highly desirable form of accommodation for some.

A few weeks ago, we visited a friend whom we have known for many years. He bought a group of caves in the Canary Islands before it became fashionable and at a knock down price too. He and his family were not living in exactly slum-like conditions, since our friend’s caves were well equipped with all modern conveniences.

There is running water and mains electricity, although many cave dwellers prefer to rely upon their own solar installations, since it gives them a feeling of self-sufficiency. Beautifully designed bed-

Visitors to the Aguimes municipality in Gran Canaria will also find some of the best preserved cave dwellings on the island in the Guayadeque ravine. There are several cave restaurants and even a cave church that is open to visitors, which may help visitors to appreciate the sense of coolness and atmosphere of cave dwellings.

If we now hop over to another of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote, visitors will discover a cave home in the middle of a remote lava field.

This was the dream home of the renowned artist, César Manrique who utilised the simple idea of living in five volcanic chambers.

This is not an ordinary home, but one lovingly created by a man who had the vision to develop Lanzarote’s unique volcanic landscape into an ecologically friendly dwelling. It is thanks to Manrique that regulations were brought into being to restrict tourism development on the island with any structure taller than a palm tree forbidden.

Homes are not the only use for caves in Lanzarote, with a cafe built into a rock on the island’s north coast and a theatre, swimming pool and nightclub built into another cave complex, which was hugely admired by Manrique as the world’s most beautiful cave adaption praise indeed.

Of course, as time goes on, modern adaptions of original cave homes distort our vision of the lives and times of these early people. As a reminder, visitors to Gran Canaria may wish to visit one of the most important archaeological sites in the Canary Islands, the Cueva Pintada (the Painted Cave), which interprets life at the time of the

Guanches. The original purpose of the cave is unknown, but it is decorated with red, black and white painted geometrical shapes and may have been used as a dwelling, a scared place or for funeral rites.

This spectacular site is well worth a visit.

So, before you rush off to book your modern cave home experience with Airbnb, and yes, I have no doubt that a version of a cave home will be available on there too, do give some thought to these ancient people and the lives that the Guanches lived before the invasion by their Spanish conquerors and the genocide that was to follow.

Personally, I’d rather book a nice hotel.

THREE DETAINED FOR BULLYING VIA

ovelda's Guardia Civil has detained two men (25 and 26 years) and a 24-year-old Spanish woman as suspected offenders for threats, coercion and sexual abuse of a disabled person through messages via WhatsApp.

A few months ago, Alicante’s Civil Guard received complaints from a mother for threats via the Whatsapp social network to her 30 year old daughter who has a limited intellectual capacity. The woman said that her daughter had been displaying signs of worry and concern for several days, so she asked what was wrong to be told that she was receiving insults and threats from a Whatsapp group, and that she was very frightened.

Occasionally one of them posed as a bully from the Russian mafia and sent her audio messages, using a Russian accent, threatening to kill a family member. She became more and more frightened so she agreed to send compromised pictures.

In view of the seriousness of the allegations, Alicante passed the information to their collegaues in Novelda from where the threats were thought to originate.

Apparently, like many young people, the girl had established a "digital" friendship with a 25 year old man through social networks. The two had never met but they maintained regular contact through a popular site.

The messages were made as threats stating that they would harm her or her family if she did not comply with the group’s requests.

The Civil Guard was eventually able to gather sufficient evidence, and has now arrested the two men, aged 25 and 26, and the woman, 24, as alleged perpetrators of sexual abuse, coercion, threats and humiliation to a person with limited abilities.

The three detainees appeared before a

magistrate last week following which they were released on bail pending a further court appearance where charges will be formally brought.

Tips for responsible mobile use The Civil Guard advises those responsible for minors or those needing special care to take into consideration the danger of their participation in these type of sites and groups. You have to make them understand that not everything they see on the net is true, not all of the people meet with are trustworthy, since they are rarely who they say they are.

Also, it is necessary to educate them to take special care and to instruct them to take extreme precautions when dealing with "new friendships" and most importantly, you have to give them the confidence to be able to tell their parents or their guardians should they have any concerns.

Visitors to the area are disgusted by the presentation we offer. Would the residents of the city accept any of this? Or should we looking to San Miguel or Torrevieja to Govern this area (quite feasible). Orihuela City has had long enough to do the right thing and not just take our Taxes. and us for granted My vote would be INDEPENDENCE. I hope that you and others can understand my points of view in these matters and hope that CLARO has similar ambitions in these respects, as CLARO should be the party for the Residents of The Orihuela Costa? Or even the political party Compromis for Orihuela.

Three Greens selected for Valencian Bowls Championships The draw for this year’s Championships from 19 Sept. – 3 Oct. took place at the LLB Committee meeting at Montemar on 11 July. There were five clubs interested in hosting the event and the three successful clubs were Quesada, San Miguel and Vistabella, with the reserve club being Emerald Isle and La Siesta being unsuccessful. Entry forms will be sent out on Fri. 14 July and the closing date will be 20 August . We expect a larger entry than previous years as we now have 1600 Regional Federated members who are eligible to enter compared with just over 500 in previous years.

The disciplines are Ladies Singles, Mens Singles, Ladies Pairs, Mens Pairs, Mixed Triples and Mixed Fours.

Another exciting end to the season with La Marina TS playing Quesada SH in the South Alicante 4 Wood Pairs League. Who was going to come second to Quesada DS or could La Marina win the League if the results went their way?

We tried very hard with Dave Taylor and Dave Hadaway winning 24 -12 away which gave us the overall score in the end but the two from Quesada SH had a good game to beat us 19-17at our place. Anyway well done the Men’s Pairs in the guise of the two I mentioned plus Tom Spencer and Peter Parsons in finishing second.

San Miguel CHRISTIANS played their last game of the season last week against La Siesta Wasps gaining 6 points to La Siestas 8.

Shots were close 102 to San Miguel, 109 to La Siesta. Winning teams were Bob Nesbitt, Brenda Rees, Mike Douglas 18-16: Tony Sansom, Bob Graham, John Raby 19-17; Anita Brown, Alan Campbell, Lee Sinclair 21-13.

The MOORS only managing 2 points away to Vistabella Fairways, well done to Bob Hanton, Don Whitney, Bob Donnelly 23-15. Shots for 86 - against 120.

The MOORS did slightly better in their last game of the season, away against La Siesta Wasps gaining 5 points. David Champion, Frank Scotthern, Jack Jackson 29-11; Sheila Errington, Cliff Plaisted, Brian Errington 16-11. Shots were drawn 106 each. Well played by all teams during the season, and thanks to all who kept putting their names down!!

The WASPS have now finished until September. Club mornings still going on, although numbers have dwindled, Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. There will be a FUN DAY on Saturday 7th October followed by a Hog Roast. If you haven't yet got your names down, do so, its a good laugh. Deposits of €5 a head should now be paid to Paul Thomas. An even quieter week, with the final league match played on Friday 14th; South Alicante Spitfire Division: SL Wellingtons were away at Quesada v Q Blenheims. In spite of the breeze it was an extremely hot morning and a lot of us wilted in the heat of battle. Unfortunately the game didn’t go the way we hoped, finishing: 4points – 10, shots 88-118. Well done to : Carol Lowry, Ann Holland, Keith Lowry 267, Judy Carroll, Jan Pocock, Brian Pocock 24-23.

San Luis Open Summer Rinks, is running on Tuesday evenings 6:00/6:30 from 20th June- 1st August. After the first 4 weeks the top 5 teams are “The Laties” 6 points (+8 shots), on 4 points are: Isla Luis (+22), “Dribs & Drabs” (+19), “San Luis Blues” (+6), “No Pasa Nada” (+2).

Still ongoing is the “egg cup challenge” - 4 matches of 6 trips home & away v our close neighbours La Siesta, after 3 weeks we are 1-5 down with 1 match to go!!

SAN LUIS WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS: Whereas some clubs may be considering reducing their entries for the coming winter season, San Luis Bowls Club is going back to 4 for the South Alicante league on a Monday and 4 for the Southern league on a Friday.

Being a competitive club does not mean that there is not room for everyone in ALL divisions to get at least one game a week. We will have 1 in Div A, 1 in Div B and 2 in Div C and it is as much the latter where we welcome players - either those who have played in the leagues and want to continue, or those who are now ready to test the water and get involved and above all enjoy the game.

Your commitment to joining San Luis BC would be needed BY 1st August with membership commencing 1st September. However by joining in July there would be no charge for August when bowling at San Luis.

Paddy’s Point Golf Society Pub Championship This month saw us compete for the Pub Championship at a very hot Las Colinas. The course was a little disappointing especially the greens which were very bumpy due to recent hollow tining but this did not deter from an enjoyable day.

Thanks once again to Rory, Hazel and the staff at Paddy's for looking after us - the hungry and thirsty golfers.

The Final between Benitachell Leopards and Quesada Lions was held at Bonalba B.C. on July 12th and promised to be a very tight contest based on the Finals over the last four years.

The Ladies Singles between Mary Cockell (BBC) and Jackie Johnston was nip and tuck with Jackie edging ahead to win 21-18. The Men’s Singles of Greg Sperring (BBC) against Derek Toozer was equally close, but after Greg picked up a three Derek couldn’t pull back to lose 14-21.

So it was equal after two disciplines and with the other games closely contested it looked set for an exciting finish, but then Quesada surged ahead to win all of the remaining disciplines to finish 5-1 winners.

The Wolfpack contest the Essex Cup On Tuesday, July 11th the Society ventured south to Roda, one of our favourite courses for awaydays. The competition was The Essex Cup, held for the past two years by Joe Booth who was there to defend his title. The day was very hot with enough wind to slow the ball down, but not enough to cool us ! The course was in good condition but for some reason was not encouraging high scoring for most of our seasoned members. The greens were holding the ball well but once there some of the pin positions were “interesting”. Play progressed well in the heat although most of the scores at the halfway point were decidedly average - the two exceptions being Ted Harris and Nick Brown, both scoring a respectable 17 points.

Nearest the pin on the tricky island green on the

7th, playing into the wind, was Dan Connolly. On to the back nine and many were still finding it tough going for some reason. Some players did pick up their game however with the aforementioned Nick recording 19 points and his playing partner Nigel Cotton matching his score. The best back nine score though was Paul Abbott’s very impressive 23 which was enough to shoot him into 1st place at the end of the day. So, the Essex Cup goes to a lad from Leeds. In second place was Ted Harris and third was Peter Palmer. Guest Nick Brown won the sweep and Bob Eno was the victor of the nearest the pin prize on the 13th. Well done to all prizewinners. Alas, for the majority of us it was a disappointing day scoring wise. There’s always another round to look forward to…..

ROCKETS GOLF SOCIETY - JULY HOME GAME Only 20 minutes drive to our home course for our monthly Stableford. Wall to wall sunshine, but it was not as warm as it has been . Course now in brilliant condition. Greens very fast now they have settled down.

This is not a high handicappers course as shown by the category results. In the Gold Gategory Ron Swift ( after coaching from his son when in England ) came in with the top score of the day 34 pts, followed by Rod Smith with 33 pts then Ron Chambers with 28 point on count back.

In the Silver Category Geoff Wild took first place ( again )with 33 points. Paul Mutter took second place with 24 points and in 3rd place Malcolm Woods with 23 points.

Ron Swift took the longest Drive and the only nearest the pin recorded Best Guest G Dobson Back to Bar Patricia on Torreta 3 for Lovely Bangers and Chips. Thanks for making us welcolm Neil.

Keeping this stretch open for matches takes a lot of work and Jeremy Fardoe, Phil Steeper, Jackie Breslin, Steve Collins, Tom Marshall and Steve Fell should be thanked for their efforts in clearing 16 pegs. Winner on the day was Jack Burrell with 7.00 kg caught using pole and paste.

San Miguel Golf Society @ Alicante “Sledgers and Shankers” A combined day of a members’ stableford competition and annual match play between SMGS and the Denia/Javea based Sledgers and Shankers saw 10 members confused about which format they should get their heads to concentrate on. Luckily for SMGS 3 of the doubles teams got their act together and won their matches (the other two, to tell the truth also, but lost to stronger opposition).

So SMGS snatched back the trophy with the tightest of victories 3&2. The quality of the San Miguel teams’ play was seen in the day’s stableford competition results with match competitors Ken Flaherty, Keith Stevenson, Theo Boelhouwer, Tony Smale and John

Osborne all being placed in their category prizes. Joint best scorers of the day were Keith and Gary Garbett with 38 points. Thanks go to those who organised the match, for sure to be repeated next year.

The day’s SMGS stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 3rd Ken Flaherty (33 on CB), 2nd Marg Birtwistle (34), and 1st Keith Stevenson with 38 points.

T.M.G.S Monthly visit to La Marquesa Golf Thanks to our 9am tee time we were able to get all 7 groups off the first tee and back into the clubhouse before the heat of the day arrived.

Yes it was hot and indeed we did have some very hot scores yet again, notably School Teacher Derek Sullivan, who for the last several months has been asking if he needs to prepare a speech while receiving the winner’s prize until now it wasn’t necessary but today was his day and won the Silver category with 41 points however the Secretary didn’t give him the opportunity to speak, everyone wanted to go home early!

Another incident that springs to mind is that of my good friend Vernon (pink ball) Brown, after a very good front 9 Vernon struggled a little on the back 9 using up almost all of the lucky breaks that come your way in this game.

He did manage to save the best until last, the 18th at La Marquesa is a very long par 5 that runs alongside of the road, well after pulling his tee shot left (into the cabbage) he then proceeded to push his 2nd to the right and after negotiating a few cars and taking a ricochet off one of those big green basura bins he played his 3rd from the centre of the fairway (no justice) but a par wasn’t to be and Vernon had to settle for a bogey 6.

Never mind Vernon you can practise all you like during your summer recess back in blighty, see you in September.

And the team with a very good score of 99pts. were Terry Field, Olga Douglas, Rod Doel and Joyce McClusky.

The Plaza Golf Society @ Las Ramblas 40 players played the course known to many as the “Marmite” course, although our must like the course, with 2 HOLE IN ONES since we have been going. Well done to Steve “the hair” Higgins getting his hole in one on the 12th. One of the toughest around.

Hopefully the 50€ bonus from the society helped towards your bar bill!!! No one got a 2 so Steve Higgins also won the 80€ 2’s pot.

Our Gold division saw Declan Crowley 3rd with 33 points, Callum Hitcham 2nd with an impressive 35 points and the man/Grandad of the day with 36 points was Steve Higgins. Sky Blues fall to defeat at Pinatar Arena

In an entertaining game on Tuesday the Sky Blues fell to their to their first defeat of pre-season, losing 3-2 to French 2nd Division Club Valenciennes, as the lead changed hands three times at the Pinatar Arena.

The Sky Blues got off to the worst possible start as the French side opened the scoring within four minutes thanks to a cool finish from close range by Steve Ambri.

City responded to level from the penalty spot ten minutes before half-time, with Marc McNulty scoring his first goal for the club.

Mark Robins made ten changes for the second half, and it was young striker Jordan Ponticelli who scored his first senior goal to put the

Sky Blues ahead, smashing the ball into the roof of the net.

But despite being on top for much of the second-half, the Sky Blues conceded from a Dominic Hyam own goal to bring the scores level, moments before opposition centre-back Loic Nestor unleashed a speculative curling effort from 25 yards, to hand his side victory with ten minutes remaining.

Elche CF launch their Segunda B

Elche Club de Fútbol this morning launched their 2017/18 season-ticket campaign under the slogan, Solo Elche C.F. (Only Elche CF). To something of a mixed reaction online, prices - which seem a little on the high side – were announced in the range from 65€ up to 325€. For these prices subscribers can avail themselves of the entire Elche pre-season campaign, including the Trofeo Festa d'Elx game against Levante on August the 12th, nineteen regular season matches, Elche CF Ilicitano home games and the first three Copa del Rey games if Elche are drawn at home as they progress.

The club, as is customary, have reserved the right to make two games "economic" which is to say entrance to these two matches will not included in the season ticket. For certain, one of these will be the Alicante derby with Hercules CF. In an attempt to make the deal more attractive, the club also announced that should Elche be promoted to the Segunda División at the first time of asking, they will deduct the price of the current season ticket from next season's with the same discount if, a season later, the team is promoted to La Liga.
