WE SHALL NOT FORGET Once again the British and many Commonwealth nations fell silent on Friday to mark Armistice Day and remember those who fought and died, as veterans and their families joined the military top brass at the Cenotaph in central London to pay their respects to those killed in conflicts since the beginning of the first world war. Here on the Costa Blanca the four local services that took place over the weekend were not quite as grand but neither were they were quite probably far more personal. The first, on Friday at a packed La Siesta Church in Torrevieja, was observed by the Torrevieja Branch of the

Royal British Legion whilst on Sunday the RBL Branches at Gran Alacant/La Marina and the Orihuela Costa chose to hold their Remembrance

Services, along with representatives of their communities, including many guests and local politicians. The final service took place in

Campoverde on Sunday evening and was attended by many members of this very pleasant village. Continued on Page 2

From Page One In Torrevieja. Friday’s service got underway at 10.15 am with the standards of the RBL and many other service organisations splendidly displayed as the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums led the march into the church garden area. As they formed up in front of the church altar the service got underway with a prayer from Father Richard Seabrook , officiating chaplain, followed by the RBL Exhortation from Branch Chairman, Gerry Lynch and then, most significantly of all, the Last Post played by Ian Gibson of the JB Brass Band. The lessons were read by Branch President Gill Burden and Carmen Morate the Torrevieja Councillor for International Residents. After the service the standards, followed by dignitaries and wreath holders, moved to the cenotaph located in the church garden area, where the wreath laying ceremony was led by Cllr Fanny Serrano. Mil Palmeras saw the service

and wreath laying ceremony attended by well over 300 people including members of the Costa Blanca Scooter Club who turned up on their splendid vehicles en masse to show their respect to the fallen. The guests included the British Vice Consul Sara Mustlehelm, Chairman of the RBL Spain District North, Nigel Hails, Lt Col (Retd) Pete Lodge MBE and the son of the Branch Chairman, Flt Lt David Carter. They were joined by Francisco Morales, a serving officer in the Guardia Civil, local politicians Ignacio Ramos, the mayor of Pilar de la Horadada and the Orihuela Councillor for Tourism Sofia Alvarez. Despite undergoing surgery only

5 days earlier the service was conducted by Branch Chaplain, Pastor Keith Brown. He was assisted by lay preacher Stephen Treseder while Nigel Hails and Branch member Sandie Coates read the lessons. Once again there was a moving A capella performance of ‘I Believe’ sung by long time RBL supporter Rebecca Holt. With the non availability of the Phoenix Concert Band the music was provided by church organist Jennie Cooper. Once again the last post was performed by Ian Gibson while the lament, ‘Lock Rannoch’, was played by piper Tom MaGill. The service was concluded with the National Anthems of Spain and the United Kingdom performed by pipers John Wilson and Tom MaGill Following the service the ceremony then moved out to the Garden of Remembrance where the RBL, British Consul, Pilar de la Horadada Council, Orihuela and other Service Wreaths from the Royal Navy, the Royal Air force and Royal

Marines Associations were laid, after which branch and members of the public added their own poppy crosses in memory of family members and lost friends. Quite what the Costa Blanca would do without the wonderful Torrevieja Pipes and Drums I really don’t know but once again, led by Pipe Major Lillian Nicholson, the company were magnificently turned out in Mil Palmeras in support of the RBL and the local community. The final act of the day saw them flanked by a large number of the general public as they led over a hundred and fifty members of the congregation from the church, past the assembled

dignitaries, to the Mil Palmeras Olympia Restaurant where members and guests enjoyed a delightful buffet lunch. The row of medals in the photograph above left was worn in Mil Palmeras by Del Campbell, formerly of the 1st Bn The Black Watch and from left to right they are the Northern Ireland General Service Medal, the Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan Campaign Medals, The Golden and Silver Jubilee medals, the Accumulated Campaign Service Medals pre 2011 and post 2011 and finally the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal.

At a press briefing, she underlined that the United Kingdom maintains its position as the leading emitting market to Spain and, if the current trend continues, more than 17 million British tourists will visit Spain by the end of 2016, a new all-time record. Beforehand, Isabel Borrego attended a meeting with leading agents in the British tourism sector, to whom she outlined the economic situation and the current state of the tourism industry in Spain. She announced the Spanish Government's forecast for 2016 to close with an all-time record number of inbound tourists - in excess of 74 million, as well as excellent spending figures. She also said that employment in this sector is performing particularly well. Represented on the Valencian Community Tourist Board stand were representatives from Orihuela, Torrevieja and Guardamar. The Guardamar main products demanded by British tourists, in addition to the sun and beach, are active tourism and sports, gastronomic-oenological, birdwatching (bird watching with a potential market of 1,500,000 Britons) so that

According to a spokesman, the main products demanded by British tourists in Guardamar, besides sea, sand, sun and beaches are activity holidays and sports tourism, gastronomy and wines. There is also a potential market of over 1.5 million bird watchers which the resort is keen to tap in to as well as pinewoods and dunes, the southern Alicante wetlands and archaeological, historical, cultural and gastronomic heritage of the first order. According to the Tourism deputy, Eduardo Dolón, Orihuela and Torrevieja were working alongside the Tourist Board of the Diputación de Alicante, in promoting cruise tourism and sport, with particular emphasis put once again on golf, with five championship courses on the city doorsteps. Sofia Alvarez, the councillor for tourism in Orihuela meanwhile said that she and the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana also focussed on history, monuments, festivals, gastronomy and our most universal poet, so that the city can continue to be a main destination chosen by the many tour operators who came together at this event.”

San Javier Airport to connect with Heathrow

F

or the very first time, British Airways, the UK’s National Airline, has introduced direct flights from Heathrow to San Javier Airport, the first of which will launch on 28 March next year.

31 days for Torrevieja op Patients at Torrevieja’s University Hospital wait, on average, just 31 days to undergo surgery compared with 127 days in many other public hospitals in the Valencia region. The data for the third quarter of the year was released by the Regional Minister for Health, Carmen Montón just last Friday. A spokesman at Torrevieja Salud said

that the data reflects the commitment of the organization to maintain the surgical waiting list below 60 days. Figures provided in the report also show that surgical specialties such as dermatology, gynaecology, ophthalmology and Vascular Surgery had even lower waiting lists in September, with patients having to wait only 16, 19, 20

ETA Number 1 Arrested

and 16 days respectively. It is further noted in the statistics that about 70 percent of all operations are carried out without the need for patients spend the night in the hospital, which is only possible thanks to the application of excellent surgical and anaesthetic techniques, by experienced professionals.

Officers from the French General Directorate for Internal Security (DGSI) arrested ETA number 1 Mikel Irastorza on Saturday morning who had been on the run in the French town of Ascain, located in the Pyrenees. Artola, aged 41, controlled all its activities and heading up the leadership structure. He has held this position for over a year, since the arrests of David Pla and Iratxe Sorzábal in September 2015. Two other people were also arrested in the operation for their alleged collaboration with the terrorist group: a man of Spanish and a woman of French nationality, who were harbouring Mikel Irastorza at their home. This is a harsh blow to ETA as it represents a loss of leadership within the terrorist group and elimination of its management structure responsible for controlling the distribution of the weapons and explosives arsenal that the terrorist group still maintains.

The airline, which has the largest fleet and more international connections than any other, will make two weekly flights between Murcia and Heathrow airport in London, Europe’s busiest airport, twice weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Both the company and the destination are new ventures for the Murcian terminal, which has for many years maintained links with London’s other three airports at Gatwick, Luton and Stansted through the low cost carriers. However, it has never been connected to the West London giant. British Airways (BA) flights departing

from San Javier will arrive at Heathrow’s terminal 5, one of the most modern in the world, and which was extended just two years ago. This new offer of flights, which are already available on the BA website, will mean even more competition for the low cost carriers that already dominate the San Javier airport Currently British tourists account for 80% of the total passengers that travel through the Mar Menor, an increase of 10% on 2015, and it is notable that the La Manga Club resort has already started to promote the flights through its Internet portal. The new connection joins those that San Javier currently has with other British and Irish airports at Luton, Stansted, Dublin, Birmingham, Manchester and East Midlands.

his man has been around for some time. His tells you that he's been burgled and needs to change all his locks which will cost €540 or similar. He has the €500 but can't draw out any more so can he borrow the €40 until tomorrow. He gives a sob story about having to sleep in his car through fear, and says he knows the Community President and other local residents very well. He also tells a tale to passers by about running out of fuel, and needing some cash. Again some there are a number of people who have been conned into giving him money. Orihuela fuel problems resolved T he Orihuela Councillor for local contracts, Francisco Sáez, appeared before the press last Monday to reassure the public that the recent difficulties encountered by the municipal vehicle fleet in respect of the supply of fuel on the Orihuela Costa, has been resolved. He said that the service has now been restored and is once again operating normally. Sáez told the press that "the debt that caused the suspension of the contract corresponds to the years 2013 and 2014, so the company cannot breach the current contract which was signed just one year ago, although the Ayuntamiento reserves Orihuela Councillor for local contracts, Francisco Sáez

to terminate the contract should the service not be resumed, adding that "there was no reason for the contractor to refuse the cards used by municipal employees for refuelling vehicles”. The councillor said that the matter revolves around two outstanding bills claimed by the company for fuel used in 2013 and 2014 for 7,765 euros. He said that he was surprised by the fact that the opposition PSOE group had asked for an enquiry into the matter when the debts had arisen during their own legislature.

The source thought that he matched the description of a man who had pulled this scam on another friend previously, so he took this photo of him and told him he was believed to be a ‘conman’. At this point he tried to cover his face and made an even quicker exit. When interviewed, other community members who saw the photo said the man had been doing this kind of thing in the area for 3-4 years in the area, and that he is thought to be a German national. However, this remains to be confirmed. So, please be on the lookout for this person and report any sightings to the Police. Needless to say you should also take the usual precautions. Torrevieja and Orihuela to have Office for Victims of Crime Minister Gabriela Bravo gave no time frame for the opening of the 21 offices

T

he Regional Minister of Justice, Gabriela Bravo, said on Monday that Orihuela and Torrevieja is to have an office for the Care of Victims of Crime following regional approval for a network of 21 such offices throughout the Region that have been approved by the Valencian Generalitat. The body will be directly managed by the Ministry of Justice, Public Administration, Democratic Reforms and Civil Liberties, and it will provide citizens with comprehensive care including legal, psychological and social assistance if they have been victims or witnesses of a crime. She said that this is a pioneering project in Spain

designed for victims of crime, who are so often forgotten by the judicial system, to have all the necessary help to guide them through the judicial process and, above all, to help them cope with the psychological and social effects that can present such a traumatic episode . A total of 21 offices will be opened in Valencia. There will be one in each provincial capital and 18 others in Alzira, Sueca, Gandia, Xàtiva, Paterna, Requena, Sagunto, Torrent, Catarroja, Alcoi, Benidorm, Denia, Elche, Elda, Orihuela, Torrevieja, Vila-Real and Vinaròs with the facilities in Castellón, Valencia, Alicante and Elche also accommodating a multidisciplinary team of lawyers, psychologists, social workers and criminologists which will also support the regional offices. In 2017, the network will have an initial budget of 1,1 million euros although this amount is open to possible budget changes if necessary. As well as the specific protocols followed by the offices they will also address the needs of groups thought to be most vulnerable in addition to victims of gender violence, minors, the mentally and physically disabled, people experiencing social exclusion, victims of human trafficking, sexual assault, hate crimes and those who are still affected by events from the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship. The Department of Justice will manage the offices, in coordination with the Vice President and Ministry of Equality and Inclusive Policy, a network that already pays particular attention to victims of gender violence, so their offices may also be used as the coordinating centres for the application of restraining orders in cases of domestic violence abuse.

Would you want to cope with organising a funeral in Spain W

hen a close friend or a family member dies, the last thing you need is the worry of complex regulations and the red-tape of a Spanish funeral. At such a difficult time could you or your family cope with organising a funeral in Spain? If not you need look no further than PF Samper, a third generation independent family funeral director, based in Pilar de la Horadada. We know that the death of a loved one is a difficult experience, one that all of us are likely to experience during our lifetime, and when mourning the loss of a friend or a family member, the very last thing you want to think about is the planning of a funeral, a fact that is considerately recognised by Francisca, a long time supporter of The Royal British Legion, who has been helping the expat community from her family run business in Pilar for over 20 years. “At PF Samper”, she says, “we aim to provide only the highest level of personal attention as we ease this process for you and your family. We will take expert care and provide due consideration to ensure that your loved one gets an appropriate and caring farewell, whilst making the funeral planning process is as painless as possible”. “We will arrange a dedicated funeral service that will provide you and your family with full value, without compromise, a service that is designed to show respect, whilst still maintaining the dignity,

the values and traditions so cherished by those who we serve”.

Francisca has been providing a dignified service to the expat community for over 20 years

“We will also ensure that every life tribute is distinctive, personal and affordable, in honouring to the full a life that has been lived”. In providing a 24 hour service, throughout the entire province of Alicante and North Western Murcia, PF Samper can be providing you with that care and support within an extremely short space of time. Francisca will immediately respond to your call and while you are able to grieve with dignity she will quickly take charge of all the initial arrangements. “If you have a previously organised funeral plan we will closely liaise with your provider but if you are without such an agreement we will make all the initial arrangements for you, and unlike many similar companies here in Spain we will not demand any payment in advance”. The deceased will be prepared to lie in repose in our own private chapel, as detailed arrangements, with either you or your family, can then be left to a more appropriate time. One aspect that Francisca does warn of are the varying conditions applied by different funeral directors and Tanatorias. “Whichever company you use you must always make sure that you are completely satisfied with the costs and the arrangements, and if in any doubt do not sign any papers”.

“T

his is particularly important” she says “when the deceased has passed away in hospital, many of which have their own preferred agents.” Ultimately, of course, it’s all about trust and peace of mind, something of which you can be assured when dealing with Francisca or her assistant Eric Nicholls. The company has its own private chapel of rest, mortuary and crematorium in Pilar de la Horadada although the service can be organised by PF Samper at any church that the family wishes across the entire province of Alicante and North Western Murcia. Ministers, flowers and transport can also be organised by PF Samper who will also take care of all necessary documentation and certificates. Likewise the arrangements can be made regardless

The Chapel of Rest in Pilar de la Horadada

of faith and they can also be made to suit the time frame of the family concerned, allowing mourners to fly in from abroad if that is what is required. Whether the service takes place the following day or a week later, unlike many other funeral directors, there is no extra charge. Following cremation the urn will be delivered when required, and in the proper traditions of a genuinely family run business, details regarding payment can be made at a later date. Francisca says, “Our job consists of making sure that the families remember the day of the funeral as a very special occasion and that the loved one who has passed away is provided with the esteem and the respect that every person deserves. Though the life is ended we want to make sure that the memory lingers on”.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place So, who has heard of the Savage Islands? I guess many have, if you happen to be Portuguese, but maybe less so if you happen to live elsewhere. The Savage Islands are a small Portuguese archipelago in the North Atlantic, 280 kilometres south of Madeira, and close to the west coast of Africa. Sadly, despite the usual friendly relations between the two neighbours, there is now a growing dispute between Spain and Portugal. Basically, the argument boils down to the differences between an island and a rock, but is heavily influenced by endless greed for oil. The archipelago is a Natural Reserve, and comprised of two major islands and several islets of varying sizes. The archipelago is administered by the Portuguese municipality of Funchal, Madeira, and is the southernmost point of Portugal. In 1971, the Savage Islands were designated as a natural reserve, recognising their role as a very important nesting point for several species of birds. Portugal and Spain have been in dispute about the waters around the islands for many years, and in a proposal sent to the United Nations in

2014, Spain renewed its intention to demand a share of the potential prosperity in the waters off these islands. Portugal claims that the islands are islands, whereas Spain states that they are only rock formations, which makes all the difference under international law. A country has sovereignty over islands lying within 200 nautical miles of the coast, but this sovereignty does not exist with rocks. The status of the islands is also important for Portugal, since a decision will eventually determine Portugal’s southernmost border. Of course, once again, it is oil that is at the centre of the argument, since the area in question, which is broadly the size of Italy, contains a significant amount of oil and gas. Seizing an economic opportunity, the Spanish authorities filed an application with the United Nations to expand their continental shelf in the Atlantic between the Canary Islands and Madeira by 296,000 square kilometres. Meanwhile, from mid-August 2016, Portugal’s Maritime Police have started to patrol the disputed territory in order to “exercise state authority with regard to monitoring, surveillance and navigation safety, as well as supporting the protection and preservation of the marine environment, people and property”. Police will also be based permanently on the Savage Islands, supported by the installation of radar, a water desalination plant and an energy supply system. However, by all accounts, the police are not too keen to be stationed on the island, since it is not permanently inhabited and which their union regards as “a decision that is offensive to human dignity”. I would have thought an all-expenses paid holiday on a near-deserted island would be just the perk that many police officers would crave for.

By Bar rie Mahoney Mind you, with a name like ‘The Savage Islands’, maybe there is good reason for their reticence. Of course, politics is, as usual, at issue here. Spain is expected to continue to raise the case of its dispute with the UK over the ownership of another ‘rock’, Gibraltar. Since Spain feels so strongly about its territorial claims over Gibraltar, logically it should also respect Portugal's claim over the Savage Islands. Since both countries are members of the EU neither government wishes the dispute to get out of control, so maybe it will be kicked once again into the long grass. In any case, although Portugal and Spain will continue their verbal dispute, it is likely that the argument will eventually be resolved by mutual division of the disputed territory. Their fortified hive has recently put the wind up the Hub Hyenas in both league and cup matches, the ‘Boys at the Top’ gaining narrow 7:5 victories on both occasions. This week t’was the turn of the Junction Jaguars to get stung. Minus their top cat Patty Poo Schofield (who was ‘Poorly Poo’ this week) the ladies tracked south to their opponents and play commenced. First up was Dave Green (100), Gilly Kirby (61,75,68) and Mummy Lane who faced Secretary Sim (89), Eagle-eyed Lesley (65) and Tricky-Tracky Simpson (62) and it was Kirby of the Bees that opened the account with a nifty, first dart, D20 checkout. In the second triples Baby A hive of activity at the Porter House with Lane (84), Snowy and Goodacre’s D2 did the job The Bees versus The Junction Jaguars. against Wendy (74), Lisa (61) and Hilda. In the with a ferry ladder whilst sober we’re told. This marvellous score last triples, Daddy Lane (81), Captain Hirst (60, 66) and Dave gained her MOTM for the Jaguars. However, in this same game, Green’s S16-D20 did all that was needed against Simone, Sneeze Harvey was equally honed and droned in 52, 60, 80, 100 and D16, (62, 79) and Gail (nice to see you back). earning him MOTM for the Bees. Our buzzing friends were still not Into the doubles and it was a glimmer of hope for the Jags when done though and Gilly’s 98 and D1 and Daddy Lane’s 57x 3 and D2 Wendy (66, 77) and Eagles (65, 75 and D8) honed in on the finish first against Green (80, 79, 60) and Snowy. Alas the Secretary (79) brought the match to conclusion at 10:2 to the Bees. Thanks for a and the Psycho could not find their form against the prowess of great night Bees you played a great match and well done to Lesley Gilly (86) and ‘Chelle’s 84, 80 and D10 howdy-doody. El Rancho Bowls Club

La Siesta Bowls Club By Rod Edgerton

Monday The Broncos hosted Quesada Diamonds who are always a tough opponent and although the score was 5 rinks to 1 in favour of Quesada, several rinks were close. Often whether you win or lose is purely dependent upon who you are drawn against, but much more important is the spirit of the match and good company. In the afternoon The Pintos were entertained by The Romulans at San Luis and put on a fine display to take the rinks by 4-2 and the shots, a good result away from home taking them to third in the league, though it is a long journey to season’s end. Friday found The Mustangs at San Miguel playing The Jaguars, always one of our tougher fixtures. It was a very close match with both teams taking 3 rinks and only 3 shots difference in favour of The Jaguars, a good result for The Mustangs away. June Whitworth, Jane Hamill and Stew Hamill 21-14. Barbara Jones, Merv Armstrong and David Whitworth 16-19. Jim Taylor, Irene Thomson and Eddie Thomson 17-15. Ann Taylor, Malc Sykes and Jim Gracie 11-22. Maxine Wright, John Skipper and Rod Wright 10-17. Henry Ryder, Jan Bright and Richard Lee 17-8. In the afternoon The Raiders played The Roundheads at Emerald Isle for a difficult match against a strong team. Alas they came away with just the one rink, but there is no shame in that and I am sure the company was good. Edward Elsam, Shirley Edwards and Bob Taylor 17-20. Diane Yates, Peter Blackburn and Keith Longshaw 8-25. Pam Harris, Tricia Elsam and Brian Harris 8-24. Bob Easthope, Graham Day and Gary Newson 23-12. Gill Bartlett, Gary Dunstone and Rob Clark 5-32. Marion Haynes, Ann C Taylor and Dave Haynes 8-29. For membership details contact Brian Taylor on 965 077 093 or at briantaylor_es@yahoo.co.uk or Carolyn Harris on 966 774 316 or at elranchobowls.secretary@gmail.com

A very unfortunate day at Emerald Isle for the Apollos. La Siesta achieved two wins. Dawn & John Taylor with Harold Charleton winning 21 - 13 and Ann & Robert Heath with John Ball continuing their unbeaten run 19-18.Barbara & Jack Cooper with Irene Mangan lost by 1 shot (18th end)13-14and Beryl Styring, Brian Harman and Alex Morrice lost by 1 shot (18th end)14-15.Sheila Chorley with Trish and Pat Reilly lost by 2 shots( 18th end) 15-17. The overall shots Shots 91 - 97 Points 4 to La Siesta and 10 to Emerald Isle. A different story for La Siesta on Wednesday in the Winter League, away at Vistabella, where a brilliant performance saw La Siesta triumph by 79 shots to 70 in a close encounter winning on 4 of the 5 rinks thereby gaining ten points to their opponents two. A great team performance so difficult to mention individuals. What a game on one rink though where in 18 ends 23 shots were shared with Sheila Chorley, Fred Charman, Brian Gardiner and Alex Morrice winning 12-11 against a rink skipped for Vistabella by La Siesta old boy Gary Thorpe. The Blues were at home to San Miguel Cougars and won by 110 shots to 105 winning on 4 rinks and taking the points 10-4.Star rink for la Siesta was Irene Laverick, Pat Harman and Irene Mangan winning 29-14 whilst the tightest match saw Dawn Taylor, Trish Reilly and Harold Charleton winning by a single shot 23-22. The Golds visited Vistabella on a pleasant afternoon but were beaten by 128 shots to 83 losing the match by 10 points to 4. Winning rinks for La Siesta were Jean James,Tony Campbell and John Lincoln 21-15 and Hilary Clarke, Sheila Millward and Johnnie Ryder 21-18.

San Miguel GS 35 members and 6 guests made their way to Hacienda de Riquelme, a location not often visited by the society. A typical Nicklaus design, at least for those courses of his found in the region, with its array of bunkers, some very deep and extensive, and undulating greens. It is a course that is either loved or hated by those in the society. The slick, hard and well protected putting surfaces, along with difficult pin positions, didn’t help endear the course to those non-believers present. Only 12 members managed to beat 30 pts, with the outstanding score of the day being that of Richard McCann with his 41 pts, with category winners Phil de Lacy and Grattan Forber also beating their handicaps. Nick Spicer had a worrying moment when only just missing a holein-one, having only had a mere 40 euros on him to cover what would have been a much greater expense had he made it. The day’s competition results, by category and in reverse order: Bronze: 5th Brian Butler (29), 4th Paul Cobain (30 on CB), 3rd Mick Roscoe (30 on CB), 2nd Carmel McCann (34), and 1st Grattan Forber with 38 points. Silver Category: 5th Mike Jordan (29), 4th Nick Spicer (32), 3rd Ken Flaherty (34 on CB), 2nd Paul Tomlinson (34 on CB) and 1st, Phil de Lacy with 38 pts. Gold: 5th John Osborne (34 on CB), 4th Steve Higgins (34 on CB), 3rd Noel Bannon (35 on CB), 2nd Eva Petterson (35 on CB), and 1st, with a superb score of 41 points, Richard McCann. The Abacus was won by Kyree Skarsmoen. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Ivor Turkington (5), Theo Boelhouwer (7), Nick Spicer (15, and missing a Hole in One by an inch – or less!!) and Paul Tomlinson (17). The Best Guest was Ian Howie, winning on count back with 32 points. Our thanks go to the staff at Riquelme golf course for their contribution to the day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next week at Altoreal.

Autumn Tennis Tournament at Campoamor Saturday 5th November was the date for this months tournament at the Campoamor golf club. Despite a poor weather forecast, the 16 players enjoyed good, if rather windy weather. The competitors played a mixture of mixed, mens and ladies doubles, with different partners and opponents over the 6 rounds. RESULTS MEN WOMEN 1st Colin Beaven 5.75 average 1st Jan McClaughlin 5.6 average 2nd Mark Preston 5.25 2nd Linda Porter 5.2 3rd Hanjo Moser 4.75 3rd Chris Claughton 3.75 In the one set final Jan was drawn with Colin to play Linda and Mark, after a good set of tennis Jan and Colin won by 6-3. It was very apt that Linda and Mark made the final as this months tournament was planned to incorporate a number of their visiting friends. The players enjoyed a drink on the hotel terrace afterwards enjoying the panoramic view down to La Manga. A comprehensive tennis timetable has been running at Campoamor for 12 years now, which currently includes 3 weekly club sessions a weekly adult coaching session and junior group sessions during school holidays. Club coach, Steve Durie LTA'pro' qualified is also available for private lessons in tennis and padel tennis at Campoamor and other locations on the Costa Blanca. MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF (Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. MYTH OR MAGIC Just what is golf psychology, what can it do for you, is it myth, magic or just more American based jargon? Before I start let me correct a typical misconception that it is all about positive thinking. For sure that is part of the methodology but it is more about controlled and correct thinking than just positive thinking. In fact it is more about not thinking in a negative manner rather than thinking in a positive manner. Now let me give you some bad news. Correct and controlled thinking will not stop you from hitting bad golf shots because 80% of good shot making is due to swing basics such as posture, grip and alignment and if your basics are incorrect bad shots will result. What correct thinking will do for you is to stop you hitting bad golf shots because you THINK that you are going to hit bad shots by replaying previous bad experiences in your mind. Control of your ‘inner game’ will also stop you from turning one bad shot on a hole into a series of bad shots over the following holes as you tend to lose control of your temper and concentration with anger and frustration taking over from controlled thinking. Golf psychology is not new, it has been around for years, only in different forms such as your parents, your golf coach, your friends and your caddy. Jack Nicklaus, in my opinion the best golfer in history, used to ask three things from his caddy, carry the clubs, give me the yardage and keep telling me how good i am. Even the best golfer like being fed positive vibes and amateur golfers are no different. We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us. Poor performance from Torry as Pedreno returns

Do

you want the good or bad news? Ok, the good news is that at long last, Pedreno has officially made his second coming to CD Torrevieja (although he´s unofficially been working behind the scenes for some weeks now) as manager. Bad news is that because he was dismissed from the bench during the final game of last season, he has to serve out a 3 match ban, the first of which was last Saturdays defeat at Torre Levante. Their Campo Municipal De Orriols is set in the heart of Valencia, which unfortunately had never been a happy hunting ground for Torry, and now the wait for a point goes on. To be perfectly honest, it never really looked anything but, as the hosts were stronger and more aggressive. In all fairness though, Torry have had to endure a horrendous period of injuries, which coupled with players departures and complications concerning bringing in fresh blood, has made it difficult for the young lads. They give their all week in week out, deserving praise of the highest order for the way they have played on through adversity. Some have been carrying knocks but refused to chuck the towel in, when lesser individuals would have wilted under the pressure, proving what a great bunch of play-

Torry Levante .................3 CD Torrevieja ..................0 ers Pedreno has at his disposal. There were a few changes from the previous match. New signing Adrian made his debut as full back in place of Luis Carlos, Eugenio slotted into centre of defence, replacing Juanmi who´s moved up to a div 2b side, fit again Pastor replaced injured striker Hugo. On the bench sat new signing Soto, alongside keeper Alex instead of Eneko. It´s great to have these 3 new signings on board, and 2 or 3 more will be joining in the near future. Mid table Levante were missing ex Torry favourite Ruben Suarez through suspension, and were hoping to continue their fine home form. In the 1st min, Lewis had a firm shot well saved, then straight up the other disasterstart struck! A Theend Balaton long ball out to the right wing found Victor, whose inch perfect cross sought out the unmarked Olcina, making no mistake from close range. On 14 mins, a mix up in the Torry defence allowed Reyes to execute an outlandish overhead bicycle kick, which slammed against the cross bar.

Three mins later, the same player forced Buba to make an excellent double save, as the hosts threatened to run riot. Towards the end of the half, Gilabert shot across the face of Torry´s goal, needing just a touch to double his sides lead. Buba was called upon to make another vital save early in the 2nd half, as Levante continued where they left off. Reyes should really have scored on 70 mins, but faced with a 1 on 1, his well placed shot produced an equally top drawer save at the foot of his post by Buba, and again 7 mins later when he was again denied by the Torry keepers brilliance. When Torre Levante did eventually score their 2nd, it wasn´t without controversy. Two players were quite clearly offside when receiving the ball, one of which was Gilabert, who had the simple task of shooting past a stranded Buba. It was so cruel, but Torry fought back well. Sub Soto saw

his angled shot fly wide of the far post on 2 occasions, but he showed plenty of promise during the 30 mins on the pitch. A straight red for a 2 footed lunge by Yago on Dani in stoppage time, reduced the hosts to 10 men, but they still managed to add a 3rd when Reyes punished a comical defensive mix up, slotting into an empty net, having beaten Buba to a race midway inside the half! Bookings for Buba and Dani, plus a few more injuries, added to Torry´s woes in a day to forget. A local derby against Elche Ilicitano greets Torry next week. Make a note of Sun 20 Nov, ko 5pm, at Nelson Mandela Stadium, for what promises to be a cracking div 3 fixture.

New signing Adrian must wonder what he’s let himself in for

FERNÁNDEZ DOUBLE SEES ELCHE ALRIGHT

T

wo goals, both deft headers from an unlikely source, secured all three points for Elche as they overcame an old rival with relative ease. Real Valladolid was the rival and midfielder Álex Fernández the conquering hero who, overnight on Saturday at least, put Elche within touching distance of the play-off places. Less than seven thousand bothered to turn up, thanks in large part to the nonsensical 1pm kick-off time. Those that made the effort were quickly rewarded for their loyalty when, with just three minutes gone, Pablo Hervías sent in a right-footed cross from the left flank.

Álex Fernández, who usually patrols the area just in front of the back four, was on hand to rise between two visiting defenders to glance the ball adroitly beyond Becerra in the Valladolid goal. Thereafter, and for much of the rest of the first half, it seemed to be a case of dead-legs and dead-ends. Two or three times Elche players were left on the turf following robust, shall we say, challenges by Vallisoletano defenders or midfielders. Javier Matilla, who needed a lengthy spell of treatment, will definitely wake up sore this morning thanks to one particularly stiff - and unpunished - challenge. Those that survived the attempted maimings quickly ran into cul-de-sacs in their attempts to create meaningful Elche attacks. Half time 1-0. Somehow, and despite the loss of last season's Pichici Sergio León, Elche are joint top-scorers in the division. There is something about this group of players who, when they're collectively in the mood, always look likely to create something. The difference between this season and last, when the principal objective of coach Rubén Baraja was not to lose, is stark. Thus far twelve different players have made the scoresheet just fourteen games in. Too often decent looking approach play was let down by a wayward pass; it's not a lot of good trying to be Barcelona before you've

FINAL SCORE: Elche CF 2 Real Vallodolid CF 0

got the hang of being Elche. Give Elche, and coach Alberto Toril in particular, credit, though, they definitely seem to want to play the game the right way. Any second half possession stats might have been interesting, Valladolid seemed to have an awful lot of the ball and only smart saves by Juan Carlos kept them at bay just long enough for Elche to protect and then double their lead. There may have been a element of good fortune with the second goal - goalkeeper Becerra should have done more to prevent it - but there was nothing lacking in the technique of Álex Fernández. An Edu Albacar corner found its way back to the left-back whose sweet delivery into the box a second time found Fernández perfecly placed. He wears number 9 on his shirt and he rose like an old fashioned centre-forward to plant a powerful header goalwards whereupon Becerra, seemingly unsure whether to punch or catch, did neither and simply helped the ball on its way. Today, a couple to nil was just about the right result, Elche made most of the running, played most of the attractive football and looked assured at the back. For their part, Valladolid were disappointing and probably didn't even do enough to earn a point. Next week Elche travel to struggling Almería for a Friday night kick-off, they'll be hoping victory this weekend signals the end of their pattern of inconsistent results and the start of a decent run. Time will tell.

Álex Fernández conquering hero
