Market Bus Route to be Revised Torrevieja’s local government has started the application process to have approved public transport links to serve the new location of the weekly Friday market, near to the sports city.

The plan to move the market to a purpose built location near to the Casa Grande industrial park and Aquopolis water park has been pending for many years, but the new government had decided to make it a priority, so as to end the misery for the residents who live in the current location and who suffer street closures and huge waste cleaning campaigns each week.

The 800 stalls currently occupying the streets will be moved to the new location, but, according to government spokesperson Fanny Serrano, the town hall believes that the public transport network is crucial to ensuring that the traders don´t suffer

when the move takes place.

Once the application process is approved at regional level, the town hall can start the relocation process and ensure that revised bus routes serve the new site and the thousands of residents and visitors who make the market such a popular venue to shop at every week.

Auditions for Studio32’s Christmas musical Hot on the heels of their sell-out production of “Fiddler on the Roof” Studio32 are preparing for auditions for their winter show, the Broadway musical version of Charles Dickens’ classic tale “A Christmas Carol”.

We are keen to attract some more young members for this show, so if you fancy treading the boards then get in touch to find out more.

The show dates, subject to confirmation, are Wednesday November 30th to Saturday December 3rd at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio.

Studio32 will once again be supporting the San Fulgencio Alzheimer’s Society and local charities with this production. To date we have raised over 10.000 euros and details of our latest charitable donations will be published in the next few weeks.

Emergency Centre to be ready within 18 months

T

he Regional director of the agency responsible for public safety and emergency response across Valencia, José María Ángel Batalla of the ruling PSOE, visited Orihuela Costa this week to look at the abandoned emergency coordination centre at La Zenia.

The building was part of a renewal project submitted in 2010 but then became paralysed in 2012.

The newly appointed PSOE led regional government have vowed to ensure that investment returns to neglected areas such as Orihuela, and the restarting of this project is just one which is in their sights.

The regional politician, who is also the Mayor of the northern Valencia town of La Eliana, visited the site with Orihuela Mayor, Emilio Bascuñana of the PP. Speaking to the media, Batalla stated that the government has given July 31st as the deadline to “unlock” the administrative process, which will then allow them to draft a new project from September which would meet the modern requirements of completing the construction, and so, within 18 months, the Orihuela Costa Emergency Coordination Centre will be a reality.

Bascuñana welcomed the statement, saying that it is in everybody´s interest to improve care, security and safety provisions in the area, in order to “be able to respond to the population living in Orihuela Costa and multiplies in summer”.

After their extensive campaign for many years, the C.L.A.R.O. political group also welcomed the announcement, and issued a statement saying “it is scandalous that Orihuela Costa with its, huge population of residents and visitors does not have a local police station open 24 hours a day. It is typical of the neglect of the coast that when the Playa Flamenca office of the Town Hall closes at 3 p.m., the local police station consists of a patrol car with a mobile telephone. It is scandalous too that ambulances and fire services coming from outside Orihuela Costa can take up to 40 minutes to attend emergency calls and that they often get lost on the way because of unfamiliarity with the confusing, unplanned layout of Orihuela Costa. Our latest demonstration in front of the skeleton construction was last December. Now it seems, at last, that determined efforts will be made to re-tender the project in September this year with a view to completing the new building some 18 months later.”

The initial budget for the work was 2,085,504 euro, today, given the time that has elapsed since the project was paralysed, it will be necessary to get a new tender and adjust the financial investment, not least because building legislation will have changed over the last few years. However, already the Valencia government has allocated funds of 1,133,854 euro for the construction and another 42,511 euro for the project management.

New Website for Orihuela Tourism

T

he Councillor for Tourism, Sofia Alvarez, announced the launch of an improved Tourist Website for Orihuela last Friday which is based on a web design that offers a higher

level of protection and on a web template that is "successfully used other cities throughout Valencia".

She said that as a result the Department now "has a new technological tool that is designed to meet the operational requirements of a busy tourist office", while adding that the portal has "access to flexible, intuitive information and provides high visibility ".

Alvarez also explained that the site includes tourist information such as the cultural heritage of Orihuela, Miguel Hernandez, beaches, restaurants, fiestas and golf. In addition there are sections also provide information on what to do, where to go, hotels, restaurants, tourist routes, scheduled events, as well as companies that are distinguished by their Commitment to Quality Tourism Services.

At long last, and after much campaigning by this newspaper, as well as being available in Castilian and Valencian the site is also available in English although a large number of the pages only feed through to information in Spanish.

Having spent an hour on the site over the weekend it seems to me to be a ‘work in progress’ but I will say that it is a vast improvement on what we had before. Coming soon I understand, both German and French. www.orihuelaturistica.es

New Danger Signs on Costa Beaches New signeage has been erected in three languages, Castilian, English and German, warning of the dangers of the Mediterranean currents in Cala Bosque and Cala Capitan beaches.

Councillor Sofia Alvarez said that the signs have been erected in order to improve the safety of swimmers and will remain in place all year round, complementing the lifeguard service, which operates only during peak seasons.

The beaches in question are regularly subjected to undercurrents which are often caused by temperature differences in the sea, some of which are fast and strong enough that they actively pull swimmers along with them. Aggressive undercurrents can actually pull swimmers out into the ocean and into potentially dangerous situations.

Swimmers are reminded that they must always look at the water before entering it to see if there are any signs of an undercurrent and if the conditions seem unusual or hazardous, you might be wiser making the choice just to sunbathe rather than to swim.

Political Pressure for N-332 Widening at Torrevieja

Members of the regional socialist party, Herick Campos y Antonia Moreno, accompanied by local PSOE councillors, visited Torrevieja this week to look at one of the most problematic roads in the entire area, the N-332 as is passes through Torrevieja.

The stretch of road is one of the few sectors which was not widened under recent changes to the road network, and yet it is one of the busiest sections of the coastal road.

The seven-kilometre stretch not only serves as a bottleneck for traffic, it is also the location of a number of serious and fatal incidents in recent years.

Campos recalled that the previous national socialist government invested 28 million euro in widening schemes in the surrounding towns, and also explained how the former local mayor, Eduardo Dolón, had said that the widening work would commence in 2015, although nothing has ever begun after state investment was postponed until at least 2018.

With a new socialist led government regional government in Valencia, investment has started to be allocated to various projects around the area, such as the outstanding emergency coordination centre on the Orihuela Costa, and as such they intend to campaign for the work to widen the road to become a priority.

Moreno, facing the next general election said that “it is a firm commitment of the PSOE to ensure the widening as soon as possible”.

Here the PSOE wanted to highlight the city as being a symbol of bad government based on the corruption within the PP that resulted in one former mayor being imprisoned, thus questioning Rajoy´s unlikely argument that these corrupt councillors would make a better government than those fighting

The PSOE also wanted to highlight both the waste of money under the PP administration locally, and the neglect to the area caused by what they describe as incompetence, such as is the case of the widening of the N-332 main road, for which action has been promised over many years, but was never delivered, and is now being taken up by the PSOE at a regional level.

In his speech Rajoy defended the rights for education, again seemingly oblivious to the fact that in neighbouring Orihuela many children have spent their entire education life in prefabricated cabin schools, a situation which has only just started to change through the pressure of the new PSOE led regional government.

As Spaniards head to polls in less than two week’s time the economy is growing at 3.4

percent a year, close to the fastest pace since 2007. But after almost three years of expansion, unemployment is still at 21 percent, double the European average, although Rajoy is promising to create 2 million jobs if voters give him enough support to stay in power,

With the PP’s campaign focused on the economy Rajoy is also pledging to reduce income tax and some social security contributions. He has said that he will also take measures to shorten the working day - which often stretches to 8 p.m. or 9 p.m.

But as the leader of a party that has been tarnished by links to a series of major corruption scandals, the caretaker PM has a relatively low profile, and it seems most unlikely that he will be able to find a way out of the impasse created by December’s election when he lost a third of his seats and his parliamentary majority.

Children’s home celebrates OPEN DAY The President of the Charity, Dave English, was also celebrating his birthday

Last week we celebrated the 2nd Annual Open Day at the Elche Children's Care Home. Fund raisers and volunteers were invited to the Home to meet the children and see how the proceeds from the Charity have been spent.

Those who came to the first open day last year commented on how many changes had been made to the accommodation since their last visit. They saw the new bedroom furniture, bedding and sofas bought by the Charity.

They also saw the sofas, chairs and garden stools and tables donated by the Royal Caribbean Cruise line together with the t.v. equipment bought with donations from the staff on the cruise ship last year.

We were entertained throughout the day by D.J. and singer Jim, some of the children from the home gave a display of flamenco dancing, singing from Paulino and a young lady called Bibi Martinez who, when told by her uncle about the event, wanted to come along too and she sang for us whilst playing guitar and ukalele.

During the afternoon the staff and children looked after us wonderfully and served us with a delicious BBQ and everybody was presented with home made gifts from the children.

It was a double celebration as the President of the Charity, Dave English's birthday and he was delighted when he was presented with a birthday cake and presents from the children.

Thanks go to new volunteers Jen and Roger who sold raffle tickets

and Anne-Marie who went round with collections buckets - between them they raised over 480 euros for the Charity on the day.

Very special thanks also go to Stevie Spit, Kylie and Yvie, who despite having another charity event to dash off to, hot-footed it up to the Home to join in the fun and to see the flood-lights on the sports pitch which had been bought with the money they raised from their Charity Gala at the Benidorm Palace last September. This now means that instead of being stuck inside the Home on long, dark winter evenings, the children will be able to play outside for much longer.

Stevie also brought a further 2,000 euros which was raised by him and his team at the Villa Martin Plaza charity event a couple of weeks ago - this will be used to take the children out on day trips during the summer holidays (12 weeks) - which again means they will not be cooped up in the Home - but will be able to go on trips to the cinema, Aquapolis, McDonalds, and lots of other treats which they otherwise would not have had.

Thanks to these guys the kids are going to have lots of fun! There is another charity event in aid of the Home this year on 18th September at the Benidorm Palace which we will be attending so please come along - it will be a great night.

ARCHANGEL MICHAEL ...... The Mighty Warrior Angel

W

e often call Michael “”St Michael” especially since Pope Pius named him the official patron saint of police officers and soldiers. No wonder...Michael is the defender of light and goodness and his chief role is to escort fallen people away so they cannot hurt other people. Michael and his assistant angels, known as the The Band of Mercy take negatively minded people (both living and deceased) to the light of God where their minds are healed.

Archangel Michael is the might warrior angel who protects the vulnerable and gives the strength and courage to those who need it. He often appears as a deep blue light or as a huge being, carrying a sword and shield.

Many people have reported they have returned home and glimpsed him or angels standing by their front door on guard duty and they are inevitably filled with a wonderful feeling of safety. He is known as the protector and will look after your home, your car and your family. Remember: when you ask him to watch over you, you must have faith that he is there. This means when you invoke him to protect your home while you away, you must let him do it. If you keep worrying about it, it tells Archangel Michael that you do not trust him and he withdraws his energy.

Call upon Michael whenever you feel frightened by negative sources. If you are in a crowded place populated by upset people, for instance, ask Michael to cleanse away the negative energy. In

the same vein, whenever you become burdened by worries and fears, ask Michael to cleanse your mind and heart. Angels can enter deep inside our bodies and thoughts and help us to see things from a more loving point of view.

Paintings of Michael often show him holding scales of justice in his hands as he is the overseer of truth and fairness. If you feel someone is treating you unfairly, ask Michael to intervene. You´ll receive a miraculous solution, such as the other person suddenly calling with an apology or change of heart.

It´s a good idea to invite Michael´s presence into a room of your house or office that has a negative energy about it. For instance, if you lived in a home previously occupied by unhappy people, ask Michael to purify the environment. I always ask Michael to clear the energy in the room or venues that I give workshops as Michael´s angelic energy creates a relaxed, loving atmosphere for the participants and me.

Whenever you are upset, call upon Michael to restore harmony and peace. If you travel into areas that feel unsafe in any way, be sure to ask Michael to guide you and protect you. How your ‘Poppy Money is spent in Spain

MORE PRESSURE ON COASTAL INFRASTRUCTURE AS FURTHER CONSTRUCTION APPROVED The Council has authorised the construction of a further 270 homes on the Orihuela Costa reviving a project that was first submitted in 2003. This new development comes just 4 months after Councillor Damaso Aparicio issued 8 new licenses for the construction of 250 new properties in Lomas de Cabo Roig.

The largest of the developments will see the construction of 245 homes in the urbanization Las Filipinas, a project that was first proposed in 2003. In addition, the construction of further 24 houses with pools was also approved across from Los Dolses in “El Barranco".

Orihuela’s Governing Board says that the authorisation confirms the upturn in the construction sector in the Vega Baja.

However many residents are concerned that the council is allowing the building stock to increase in the area too quickly adding extra pressure on the already overburdened infrastructure that continually struggles to cope as they join those many hundreds of properties that are already lying empty.

At the Legion we are often asked “How much money do you raise for the Poppy Appeal and how is it spent here in Spain”? So having researched this, here is a “snap shot” of some of the ways we were able to help our beneficiaries last year.

Firstly, we must thank all those generous people in our District of Spain for once again supporting the Legion. All nationalities donated to the Poppy Appeal and last year we raised over 171,000€ - a truly amazing amount.

So – How was the money spent? Each year our enquiries are slightly different but here is a breakdown of just some of the help we were able to give with YOUR donations.

There were also smaller items, gas canisters, fridges and food, as well as dental bills and help with purchase of spectacles.

Our caseworkers are always busy visiting and spending time with potential beneficiaries.

The definition of a beneficiary is someone who has served in the Armed Forces or their dependant(s). On some occasions we are able to “sign post” someone to another charity or organisation and this means the person can get the best possible help available.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. A New Expat Life or an Extended Holiday?

A

new survey of retired British expats has produced some interesting, but not surprising results. It claims that around one third of those interviewed intend to return to the UK, because they are dissatisfied with their expat experience, which includes increases in costs of living and financial concerns.

During my years as an expat living in Spain and the Canary Islands, I have come across people offering a whole range of reasons for moving to another country. For most, it is a healthy new life in the sun, which it isn't if one is determined to do little more that lie on a sunbed all day, drinking excessive alcohol, with one’s skin turning to a similar colour and texture to that of a leathery hippopotamus.

For others, it used to be the advantageous pound - euro exchange rate; one could live happily on the proceeds of the sale a modest family UK home, and particularly when pensions stretched unbelievably far. The cava bubble has certainly burst on this one, and parity of the pound euro rate, which happened a few years ago, may well happen again in the not too distant future, continuing to shatter many a dream of an easy life in the sun.

Despite rapid advances in personal communications, not surprisingly many expats miss family and friends who are still living in the UK, as well as ‘British culture’, feeling that they do not belong. Part of the reason for becoming an expat is to embrace a Spanish, French or

Italian culture. Many expats cannot be bothered to do so, refuse to learn the language, to appreciate cultural traditions, or to mix with ‘foreign’ neighbours. Failure to integrate is the key to much expat unhappiness, as well as a desire to create ‘Little Britain’ at every opportunity. Needless to say, the locals tend get a bit fed up with what is seen as British arrogance. Sadly, the ‘What’s in it for me?’ attitude is now far more prevalent than the experiences gained from learning about and fitting into a new community and culture.

The forthcoming EU referendum has opened wide the true reasons why so many expats are disenchanted about their expat experience, and many myths about the European Union are being rapidly invented. It is the threat to pensions and access to European health systems that is concentrating British expat minds wonderfully.

Although I am fully in favour of remaining in the EU, and have always opposed the idea of referendums as a meaningless bureaucratic exercise designed by the ‘political suits’ to appease a generally unthinking and inarticulate electorate into believing that they have some sort of democratic control over their lives. In reality, of course, all it does is to create social and financial instability. Despite this, I am pleased that an opportunity has been created for expats to examine the true reasons behind their lives in the sun.

Negative comments regularly abound about what is perceived as ‘Spanish and European bureaucracy’, conveniently forgetting of course that Britain also has its fair share of pointless bureaucracy, which Spanish and French expats find equally confusing when living in Britain. Thankfully, expats are slowly realising that life is about to change, whether or not there is a vote to stay within the EU. This is probably a good thing, and maybe those who do not feel comfortable with life in Spain will head off ‘home’, leaving those of us who do

enjoy life in this wonderful country to live in peace and harmony with our neighbours, as well as within the European family of nations.

It is so important that those setting out on the expat adventure do not simply regard it as an extended holiday and that they do their homework before setting off. There is still hope for the British expat, since the survey also found that younger expats, aged 25 to 35, are increasing and now make up 27 per cent of all British expats. As disenchanted expats finally head off back to Gatwick with their hopes and dreams of a new life in the sun shattered, hopefully the younger generation will adopt a more intelligent and enlightened approach to being a contented and fulfilled European expat.

Stuart was a founder member of The Torrevieja Pipes & Drums along with Barry Waddington and Charlie Wallace until 3 years ago when he had to resign through ill health.

Barry was delighted to play for his old friends on this special occasion.

GRO to be re-located The Operational Reinforcement Group (GRO) of Torrevieja’s Polica Local are to be relocated in la 'Casa de los Peones Camineros’ along the Alto de la Casilla according to Mayor José Manuel Dolon.

He explained at a recent press conference that agreement had been reached to relocate the group following meetings with the Director General of Heritage who is responsible for the town’s public buildings.

The mayor said that in addition to the building’s good condition, the Alto de la Casilla is also an excellent location, which allows quick access for the Reinforcement Group to

anywhere in the town. He hopes that the building can now become the permanent home of GRO.

The political group Ciudadanos Almoradí have once again appealed to the local ayuntamientol to take action in strengthening the town’s Policia Local force.

They say that this is the 3rd occasion they have issued such a request which, once again, comes in the light of increasing crime and vandalism in local parks and villages.

A statement issued by the group said that residents must be able to live in a safe and peaceful environment and enjoy a quality of life that is not affected by constant damage to local facilities.

They say that the local authority should be doing much more if they are to eliminate the unacceptable amount of crime in Almoradi. “We need more security for our parks, gardens and our properties” said spokeswoman Maria Quiles. “Every time an act of vandalism or a crime is committed in the town our residents get very nervous. This is all the more reason for us not wanting to lose the peaceful coexistence and peace of mind that we have previously enjoyed.”

The teams were finally whittled down to the last four, Dave Davies, Ann Marie Stevenson and Drew Gerrard from La Siesta lost out to June Jones, Colin Lindgren and Keith Jones from San Luis, and Sue Jordan, Brian Gardener and Jean Cooper also from La Siesta, lost

out to Howie Williams, Val Hignett and Tony Finan from Monte Mar. The Final had everyone on the edge of their seat to the last bowl, Monte Mar Scored two shots on the last end to give them a win of 7 Monte Mar to 6 San Luis. The Cup was presented by La Siesta President Jean Cooper and Club Organiser and Captain Sue Jordan.

By Rod Edgerton The second week of the Ladies 4 wood pairs took place against Greenlands and resulted in a 4-1 win for La Siesta. Ann-Marie Stevenson & Pat Harman were away and came away with a draw 1616. Sue Mahomet and Sue Jordan were at home and won 19 – 10.

An excellent result for La Siesta in the VCL League against San Miguel Mohawks with 3 wins and only just missing out on the ladies singles. Well done every one. Star result was the Pairs win by Pat Harman and Sheila Chorley who had a 24-12 win over Ken Hope and Nancy Campbell. The overall shots difference of 92-86 giving a win by 8 points to 4.

In the SABA League the Hornets were at home to a strong Quesada Lancasters and came away sharing the rinks but losing on total shots by 111-90.Overall points 8 to Quesada 6 to La Siesta.

Best performance for La Siesta came from the trio of Ron Sheldon, Sid Gallup and John Ball who after 7 ends trailed 11-1 but turned the game round to win narrowly by 18-16.

The other winners were Dawn and John Taylor with Harold Charleton 21-14 and Rab Logan John Lincoln and Arthur Kingsbury who won a hard fought encounter 15-10. It was wonderful to see Derek Souter out of hospital after a recent accident at the match supporting his teammates.

They beat Drew Gerrard's (La Siesta) team to go through to the final. Here they came up against Val Hignett's (MM) team and it turned out to be a very close nip & tuck game. With only 8 ends there's not much room for maneouvre - Keith's team started well but Val turned it round and although SL fought back MM picked up shots on the last end to take the win, an excellent final.

Paddy’s Point Golf Society

Saurines de la Torre was the venue for our June Outing with twenty seven players turning out to vie for the McArthur Cup. The course was in great condition and the weather perfect which led to some excellent scores being recorded.

We were all glad to get back to Paddy's where we once again enjoyed Rory and Hazel's hospitality, a big thank you to you both and all your staff.

T.M.G.S @ La Finca 8 June The forecast was for a very hot, calm day and that was just the weather! Well the scores were hotter and not so calm. In the Silver category and just back from Thailand taking 3rd place was Colin Marsden with 33 pts. Karin Alm secured 2nd place with the same score but lower handicap and in 1st place was Graham (I can’t work out the points) Smith with 35 pts. his score was confirmed by the secretary! The “HOT” scores came in the Gold category and Dave Lethaby needed 37 pts. to take 3rd place, new member Nigel Arthur took 2nd place with 38 pts. and the “hottest” score of the day went to Billy Allen who incidentally had to borrow €20 to keep his membership up to date. Of course all 3 will have new handicaps for their next game. We had 3 visiting female Vikings this week, obviously the males were rapping and pillaging back in Sweden and Norway but the ladies put up a good fight and Ulla Pressing-Jeppsson returned 29 pts. to take the visitors prize.

Lime Bar Golf Society The venue for the 8th June 2016 was El Valle on a fine and warm morning with 28 members. The course was in good condition and a pleasant round of gold was enjoyed. The competition was played in the stableford format and the scores recorded are as follows:- NTP 6th hole was Ken Farrow, NTP 9th hole Ricky Mackay, NTP 10th in 2 Peter Gillespie, NTP 12th was Arthur Jones, NTP 15th hole was Bill Denne. Best guest Richard Mackay with a score of 27 pts Silver Class in 3rd Christian Denne with 26 points. Silver Class in 2nd Graham Mitchel 26 points (CB). Silver 1st Brian Archer 32 points. Gold 3rd Ken Farrow 29 pts, Gold 2nd Bill Denne 30 pts Gold 1st Mike (Winalot) Heighway with 36 points A very good day in pleasant company and thanks to the committee for organising the event also to the Lime Bar staff for arranging the meal and the ladies for selling the football draw.

The Plaza GS @ The Ale House Our 3rd game saw us visiting Villamartin on a roasting hot day with 32 players. There was some fantastic results and everyone enjoyed the golf.

Our winner was Warren who with a handicap of 12 won with 40 points collecting 60€ cash prize, We had a count back position for 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. All scoring 34 points. Tony Flood back 9 was the best coming in 2nd with handicap of 18, collecting 40€ cash, Kev Adamson with handicap of 18 collecting 30€ and John Stevenson missed out on the podium position also scoring 34 points.

Well done to all. We also had a 2’s competition with Warren Harris,Tom Robertson and Greame Jackson all winning 20€ each. Greame was unlucky not to get a hole in one, shame because drinks would have been on him then!!! The thrower of the golf clubs this week was our societies lowest handicap player Kevin Harmason. Hope you paid your fine.

We had 6 guests, Brian Campbell scoring 32 for first place and Mick McGuire second place both winning golf balls and wine. Well done guests.

Best lady prize was won by the lovely Shirley Cain.

Besides a bit of of nip and tuck we won on two rinks, but lost on shots 79 to 107. Monte Mar 4 points San Luis 10 points. Well done to our two winning rinks which were Sheila Roberts,Graham Smyth, skip Tony Finan and also Jan Gatward, Don Cleeter and skip June Young. Well done to both teams.

La Siesta Open Trips - Three days great bowling by Monte Mar at La Siesta.

Only losing one of the five games, they played against some of the top teams.

They played a team from La Siesta in the semi final winning by one shot. In the final they played against Colin Lindgram, June and Keith Jones which they also won by one shot. Well done Howi Williams, Val Hignett and skip Tony Finan.

VCL - Another good result this week again. Away at Emerald Isle we won 8 – 4. Everyone playing their part in this win.

June 10th - Monte Mar Torros v Quesada Blenheims. Our visit to Quesada we found it was not only the weather that was hot as we found Quesada to hot to handle on the day, losing 12 – 2.

We struggled on four of the six rinks so congrantulations to our one winning team Sheila Roberts, david Eades and skip Ronnie Cairns. Also well done to our team who only lost at the end of a close match Geraldine Fisher, Joan Harding and skip Bill Young.

On Thursday Greenlands hosted The friendly match against the Ireland team, after a very enjoyable game the result was declared an honourable draw. It is with regret that we have to announce the death of Ann Slater, wife of Bob, one of our founder members.

The funeral will take place on Monday 13th June at 10am at Pilar.

San Miguel Moors last week played Vistabella Fairways at home, winning 2 rinks and the overall shots. Pete Masters, Tony Sansom, Cyril Medley won 21-14: Alan Patterson, Stuart Hemmings, Stuart Denholm 26-6: Shots were 96 to San Miguel, 92 to Vistabella.

In the VCL, the Mavericks were away to La Siesta. Singles player Pat McEwan won 21-18: Rinks Carol Rudge, Keith Green, Brian Allen, Alan Campbell won 24-12. Triples had hard lines, they were well down but fought back to 15-17. Points 4 to San Miguel 8 to La Siesta. Shots San Miguel 86, La Siesta 92.

The Christians were at home to Mazarron, winners were Pat McEwan, Eileen McLaren, Dave McEwan 31-9: Sue Milner, Ros Stockell, Bob Donnelly 21-15: Sheila Errington, Jan Farmer, Brian Errington 18-12: Close games only losing by one shot were Bob Nesbitt, Jack Jackson, Mike Douglas and Ken Hope, Carl and Ann Eagle. Total Shots 104 to San Miguel and 78 to Mazarron. 8 points to San Miguel, this should keep us top of the league!! Well done all.

You must be playing the ball into position with the correct club, not just into a safe place but the best place from where to play the next shot because it’s a bit like playing chess, you must think before you play, one wrong move and you’re in trouble.

Golf would be a very boring game if we played in a flat field with no hazards and course architects plan a course to make you think and offer alternative routes according to your ability Take for example the 10th at The Belfry, it has two routes, The first is for those of you who are long enough off the tee and have the courage to go for the green and the second is for those who can’t make it physically or mentally, and have to lay short of the water.

It is not difficult to see that this is the way to plan the hole, and that all holes must be played with the same sort of reasoning, however the route is not always so obvious, but you must find the best one before you play, only then can you play the hole with confidence.

Good course strategy indicates ‘line and length’ but while line can be found from your course plan, do you know how far you can hit the ball with each club in your bag?

Baraja parts company with Elche Café Uno GS At a packed Martínez Valero press conference, Elche coach Rubén Baraja confirmed the news which many had suspected over a week ago. Despite the offer of a new, presumably improved, contract the 40-year-old chose not to continue with the Alicante club.

Explaining his reasons, the Vallisoletano mouthed the expected platitudes before revealing that he did not “believe one hundred percent in the project.”

He went on, “"The club felt that I was the right person for the following years. The feeling I had was not that I would have liked. To be in a sports project one must believe one hundred percent in it and this is not so, sorry. It's [sic] a spectacular structure with a First Division club; the team, the fans and the club deserves a higher status but I am not the person to continue." Shortly after, he left the room to very generous applause.

Following a season which, at times, promised much but eventually petered out, culminating in a dismal eleventh place Segunda A finish, Baraja decided to call it a day with the still troubled football club. A former player with Valencia, Atlético Madrid and the Spanish national team, Baraja joined Elche CF last July.with the very existence of the club in peril.

Along with Sporting Diector Ramón Planes, Baraja cobbled together a squad of rejects, veterans and loan signings against a backdrop of an onerous wage ceiling and a transfer embargo imposed after the club suffered administrative rel-

egation for gross financial mismanagement. With boardroom turmoil ever present, Baraja and his squad gave the fans hope, almost to the end, of an unlikely play-off place.

Come the finish, and despite a decent nine match unbeaten sequence at the turn of the year, Baraja's team hit a patchy run of form at a crucial juncture of the season. In their final eleven games, Elche managed just two wins and the fans, those that bothered to turn up that is, became increasingly vociferous, blaming the poor results on a too defensive playing style. They probably had a point.

A year after their horrendous summer of 2015, Elche Club de Fútbol are in far better shape than many thought possible. That said, the new manager – whoever he might be – still has a job on his hands. For now, though, the era of 'El Pipo' is at end.

18 players from the Café Uno Golf Society turned out last week to play at Alenda. The format was Individual Stableford and the winner was to receive the Pedro Cup. The Pedro cup is in memory of and old friend, Peter Overfield, (better known as Pedro to his friends).

The course was in good condition, although the greens had been hollow tyned which made putting more difficult. The weather was perfect with not too much wind, which is usually the case at Alenda.

Carp - R - Us Club News Last weeks match on the 9th of June which was fished on a hot and steamy Eden Canal in Guardamar, was round 3 of the Summer series. At one one oclock, the temperature was 41C. Well done to the members that turned up for bank clearance on Wednesday the 8th.

The winner on the day was Steve Fell with a weight of 3.86kg. In second place was Andy Foden with with 3.52kg, third was Jackie Breslin with 2.88kg and in fourth place Pete Kerr with 2.82kg.

Next weeks match will be held on the Pantano de Beniarres, as at the moment pegs are very few and far between on Alfonse the 13.

Pegs at Beniarres will be at 8.00am and fishing will be from 9.00 till 2.30pm with a mid term half hour weigh-in for the fishes safety in this hot weather.
