perhaps most satisfying of all was the high number of unseeded bowlers who made it through to the latter stages of the competition. LĂnea Directa must have been delighted with their first venture into Spanish Bowls, and their sponsorship of the 2016 National Championships played over the last two weeks at the Emerald Isle Bowls Club. In near perfect conditions, both the weather and the standard of bowling surpassed all expectations, but

Even National Director Bob Donnelly almost got his hands on a trophy, only losing, alongside partner Eileen Potts, in the semi final of the mixed pairs competition to San Luis’s Keith Phillips and Ann Holland. The Quesada pair then went on to meet Stuart Denholm and former European Champion, Lynn Greenland of San Miguel, in the final. Continued on Page 20

Bidding process opens for Lifeguard and Summer School contracts

O

rihuela Council have now opened the bidding process for the Costa Lifeguard contract for the coming two years. The price has been pitched at 420,000 euros per annum but included are a number of additional requirements from those agreed last year. In announcing the opening of the tender, council spokesman Rafael Almagro said that the new operators will be require to provide cardiac defribulators as part of the standard equipment equipment on every local beach as well as ensuring that each one of the lifeguards is fully trained in it’s operation. The new contract also requires the successful bidder to be able to use aerial drones to facilitate any rescue should it be required in an emergency. The specification also includes the operation of four disabled access points on the beaches at La Glea, Cala Bosque, Cala Capitan and Barranco Rubio. The contract fee is set at 420,000 euros per annum for two years with an option to run on for an additional two years more, subject to a satisfactory performance.. This is the second time in five months that the Consistory has opened the lifeguard contract to

tender after the process was initially declared void when there were no company’s willing to offer their services. The councillor said that the service will operate at eleven Orihuela Costa beaches from 15 June to 15 September. There will be a total of 38 lifeguards employed in mid season and 40 in high season, which includes the months of July and August when the use of the beaches by tourists will be at their peak. Almagro then went on to cover the reconciliation of work and family life during the summer in respect of children’s activities during the summer school holidays when he provided details of the contract that he hopes to put in place. He said there will be 400 summer school places available for children during July and August. The provider will be paid 74,400 euros of which the Department of Education will fund 25,600 euros and Social Welfare a further 24,800 euros, He said that the total cost of each child placement will be 124 euros per month but these will be offset by the DoE and Social Welfare Grants reducing the cost to parents to just 60 euros per child per month.

Rainwater savings in Orihuela Costa Party costa too much

F

O

rihuela´s councillor for the environment, Miguel Ángel Fernández and local manager of water supply firm Hidraqua, Juan José Alonso, visited a variety of municipal locations this week to inspect the results of a rainwater irrigation scheme which is saving more than 20 million litres of water per year. The initiative came about following a study on the various possibilities that existed in the municipality to have alternative resources for watering

municipal land. Fernández says that “we believe it is the best choice from a technical and economical point of view to use the existing rainwater and underground network”. The city has a pumping station and collectors and drives the water through the network and storage facilities which also allows for water to be reused after it is pre-treated and disinfected for use in irrigating urban areas such as parks, gardens and sports fields.

acing continual criticism for lack of investment on the Orihuela Costa, the town hall this week has revealed how they spent over 25,000 euro on a single event on the coast, including over 8,000 euro on additional policing alone. However, this was not municipal money destined to benefit the residents who pay their taxes to fund it, but was spent on the summer music festival that the vast majority of residents want to be banned, to save them from the nightmare that they have had to endure each year since the “microbotellon” began. The local government responded to a question raised in the plenary meeting after a resident had asked for a breakdown of costs for the event. Last summer, when the municipality was managed by a different government team, the event cost in excess of 25,000 euro, which included 8,372 euro in police costs and 3,706 euro in additional cleaning. However, it is worth noting that the “monster” of the summer festival has been plaguing the cost long before both this and the previous government, the matter was raised to ask the current councillors what action they would be taking to prevent it taking place this year. So far, as in previous years, the response has been that the local government has a “clear” position on the issue and that they are against the event that causes such an inconvenience for residents, and so

they will “use all resources according to the law and rules” to avoid the consumption of alcohol in public places and causing disturbances to others. That said, they also pointed out that if the celebrations are in accordance with the law and established norms, they are likely to be unavoidable “because the obligation of the City is to ensure the rights of all Oriolanos”, and so the reality has been a lot of politician speak that means the town hall this year will be doing nothing more than previous governments and the residents will not only face another summer night of chaos, damage and alcohol fuelled partying as revellers from around the entire area well beyond Orihuela descend on the coast, they will also once again be footing the bill for the inconvenience. Bearing in mind that each government has a fouryear tenure, there is no doubt not a single person who couldn´t think of a better way of spending the 100,000 wasted during each term on actual benefits for the residents.

Resignation forces Showtime Cancellation The Cardenal Beluga Theatre Group, has had to postpone their SHOWTIME production due to be performed on the 23rd and 24th June 2016 in San Fulgencio. Although they started rehearsals in January which have been going well, the Show Director has resigned from the group, without which they are unable to complete the rehearsal of the show. However the group hope to perform the show around October of this year if they can find a new Show Director and perhaps a few additional talented members. Anyone who has bought tickets will be refunded.

BBC LOOKING NORTH TO LA MARINA La Marina was dragged into the Brexit discussions last week when members of the BBC Look North team called in to Cafe J’s Bar in the Urbanisation on Wednesday night to chat to a number of people from Yorkshire about the upcoming EU Referendum. We are not quite sure whether the visit was ‘drop in’ or ‘pre arranged’ but the presenter and his cameea man stayed quite a while chatting to people during break’s in the quiz, hosted by former radio presenter and newspaper editor Darren James. It is understood the pair then moved on to Torrevieja where they were on the lookout for other likely interviewees. The results of their efforts will be shown on BBC Look North on Wednesday 8th June

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Hug a Tree

I used to enjoy looking at the trees that run through the centre of our village. They are all the same, and can look untidy for part of the year. Birds and cicadas enjoy sitting on them and it is good to see greenery where otherwise there would be the usual concrete and tiles. Each year, Town Hall staff trim them, which can be amusing. Sometimes the trimming takes the form of cuboids or maybe pyramids - we never really know quite what to expect, but nature takes its course and they eventually resume their natural shape.

Although there are exceptions, it seems to me that very few Canarians or Spanish appreciate plants, trees and gardens. At every opportunity, their first inclination is to concrete over any remaining patch of soil that they see, or at least cover it with patio tiles. Occasionally, containers are purchased to stand on patios, beautiful plants are purchased, only to wither and die a few days later, because no one can be bothered to water them.

Several months ago, contractors arrived in our village to give the trees their annual trim. A few days later, I was horrified to see that the pruning had been total. Hardly a leaf or branch had been left in place and only a grey stump remained. Over the last few months I have checked, and it looks as if all the trees are dead. Several locals nod knowledgeably and assure me that this form of brutal pruning is necessary every few years, and that they will return to their former glory. Others shake their head and tell me that they are dead, but why does it matter? They are only trees after all...

Even though the locals treat most plants and trees with disdain, Gran

Canaria, the island where I live, can boast the most amazing and beautiful botanical garden, Jardín Botánico Canario, near Las Palmas, which is always open to the general public. My partner and I have visited the garden many times, and are usually the only visitors. I doubt that many locals, or indeed tourists, know of its existence, or can be bothered to visit, but it is certainly one of the many treasures of this island.

Since we moved to a relatively dry and arid part of the Canary Islands, I have come to appreciate the natural beauty of plants and trees now even more than when I lived in the UK. On rare occasions, our neighbour decides to mow his tiny patch of grass, which is the size of a tablecloth; it is so small it takes only a couple of minutes to mow with a strimmer, and I deeply inhale the smell of newly mown grass, which takes me back to the lawn at our Dorset cottage garden that I used to curse during its weekly mowing. I now miss National Trust gardens, garden centres, complete with garden accessories, greetings cards and cream teas, as well as the variety, freshness and colour of British woodland in spring.

One of our neighbours was horrified when he saw me installing an underground watering system in the garden of our new home a few years ago. He shook his head, and commented that it would cost a lot of money to pay for the water, but in my opinion it is worth every cent. After all, I am a Brit, and I could not exist happily without plants around me.

My hope is that the trees, once they have recovered from their shock, and Mother Nature does her stuff, will all suddenly spring into life once again, and send their shoots out with a vengeance. I will be keeping a close eye on them. If you enjoyed this article, take a look at Barrie’s websites:

Continued from Page One Surprises included the loss of Ladies singles champion Jan Dando of Indalo who went out in the quarter finals of the competition to former professional golfer Simone Morgan from Santa Maria but unfortunately the Malaga player couldn’t reproduce her form in the semi final, going down in fairly quick time to 2007 National Champion Ann Eagle. In the Ladies Pairs my money looked to be safe as last years winners, Quesada’s Jacqui Johnstone and Mel Highland progressed to the semi finals, but against club mates Carol Broomfield and Peta Rhodes their competition came to an abrupt. Fortunately Mel was able to recover in time for the Semi Final of the Ladies Singles where she came from behind to beat Tenerife’s Julie Lincoln. In the other Ladies Pairs semi, an all San Miguel affair saw Lin Miller and Chris Parsons overcome Eagle and McEwan to progress to Saturday’s final. The Semi Finals of the Men’s Blue Ribbon event and Frank Close comfortably took care of Chris Brazier of Quesada who was clearly off his game. Dennis Rhodes, however, was unable to make it an all Emerald Isle Final narrowly going down to the hyped up Martin Foulcer of Vistabella.

The finals got underway on Friday morning with the Mixed Pairs and Mixed Triples. San Luis pair Phillips and Holland took the trips quite comfortably despite a mix up with the score cards and opposition complaints about the quality of their drawn rink. The Mixed Pairs, however, went down to the very last end. With Tenerife 5 shots in front the San Miguel Trio were holding 5 as Graham Cathcart faced up to the very last bowl of the final end. The National Team Manager was able to hold his nerve as his effort just rolled inside Ann Eagle’s 5th placed wood to take the title by 18-17. Congratulations to Mum, dad and son Cathcart on winning Tenerife’s very first National title.

Saturday morning and it was the turn of the Ladies and men’s Pairs finals, Quesada v San Miguel in the Ladies competition while the Men’s Pairs final was an all San Luis affair. Both were extremely close affairs with Lin Miller and Chris Parsons overcoming Carol Broomfield and Peta Rhodes 17-15 in the Ladies Competition while Paul Parkes and Julian Pering pulled away toward the end to inflict an 18-11 defeat on clubmates Dave Blackie and Scott Malden in the Men’s Pairs. The two blue ribbon events, the Gents and the Ladies singles, brought the tournament to a close in some style. Home favourite Frank Close recovered from an awful start, 0-10 down after 4, to edge 11-10 in front against Martin Foulcer after 8 ends but the Vistabella player proved too consistent for Frank as he kept picking off the points to take the title by 21-16. But the ladies competition really was a thriller with both Ann Eagle and Mel Highland continually swapping the lead. It was 14 apiece after 18 ends but then Ann picked up 3 shots which put her within touching distance of the title. Another 2 shots on the 20th end put her within one but Mel hung on picking up single shots in the next 5 ends before Ann put the match to bed with her penultimate shot of the 26th end. It really was a fitting match to end the final day. National Director Bob Donnelly thanked his committee, the clubs and the tournament sponsors before the prizes were presented by Neil Reardon and Lorraine Howard, representatives of Linea Directa and Seagate Wealth Management as well as Paul Moran, the owner of the Emerald Isle Bowls Club. The National Anthem of Spain then formally closed the 2016 competition. LOG ON TO SPAIN NATIONAL BOWLS for all the latest news and information

IN MEMORY OF PHIL MORRIS

La Siesta Bowls Club

San Miguel Bowls Club

On Saturday May 21st the La Marina Bowls Club had a special Drawn Trips event in memory of one of our former members, Phil Morris, who was well known in the SABA area in his playing days. All 36 members present enjoyed a pleasant morning in the sunshine, and the Trophy was presented to the winning team by Phil’s widow Joan. This year’s top team was comprised of Dave Hadaway, Mike Lowe and Hilary Cronk with the runners up being the all Ladies team of Shirley Hadaway, Carol Smith and Lynne Armitage Bill Jones, Competitions Secretary

By Rod Edgerton With the Spanish Nationals coming to a climax once again their are no League Matches to report on this week. However, this allowed the away leg of the Annual EggCup Challenge to be played against our neighbours San Luis. La Siesta held a formidable 54 shot lead from the first leg but nothing would be taken for granted with 6 rinks of Triples to be fought for. On a lovely warm morning our team carried on playing with the same enthusiasm they had when playing at home the previous week. Winning on 6 rinks. Shots for, exactly as at home,119 but San Luis came back with a score of 95, 30 shots closer. Overall shots 238 for 160 against. The Trophy stays at La Siesta for a further year. Welcome back to Brian Fraser, playing his first game for over 2 years. Our Club Captain Sue Jordan has asked to send out all our prayers to George Seaman (at present in hospital in England). Get well soon George, we hope to see you back bowling once again. Last Saturday the Hamper competition was won by the trio of Brian Donnelly, Trish Reilly and Ron Sheldon. This event is played every Saturday commencing at 10 a.m. sharp and is open to members, prospective members and non-members alike. Anyone interested in playing should turn up at the club by 9.45 a.m. Further information can be obtained by contacting the Green owners Jim & Lyn Hudson, tel:- 690 190 523

San Miguel bowlers had some great games this week. In the semi finals, ladies pairs Ann Eagle and Pat McEwan played team mates Chris Parsons and Lin Miller. A very close game, going in the last end 17 across. Pat put a wood right on the jack, Lin came in with her wood, got a rub and ended up on the jack. The umpire was called to measure with calipers, and Chris and Lin got the shot!! Good luck to them in the final against Peta and Carol from Quesada. In the mixed pairs, Stuart Denholm and Lyn Greenland were behind all the way against Country Bowls, going into the last end 4 down. They picked up a five. Well done. Stuart and Lyn played their final today (Friday) against Ann and Peter from San Luis. Unfortunately, they didn't do as well, there was a mix up on the scoring where the ends were incorrect, leaving spectators rather confused. Eileen Potts and Bob Donnelly had a brilliant game in the semi final mixed pairs, unfortunately losing by 1 shot on the last end. Ann Eagle, Bob Nesbitt, Carl Eagle were behind in their trips final. They pulled up, but needed 5 shots on the last end, to play an extra end. They were holding 5 - but Tenerife fired and took one shot out!!! STOP PRESS: Club winners in the Nationals, congratulations to Ann Eagle who beat Mel Highland in the Ladies Singles and to the Ladies Pairs winners, Chris Parsons and Lin Miller. WASPS still on Wednesday, contact President Eileen Potts, telephone 966730376 or Secretary Pat McEwan 966714257 for further details.

After a tight start ther won 18-10. They eventually won their 2nd against Quesada 16-13.Their third game saw them beat anotherEI team 22-7. Semi-finals: Our Mens Pairs team of David Blackie and Scott Malden, were up against Emerald Isle. Initially they were down , but hey came through to win 25-17. Our other Mens Pairs team of Julian Pering and Paul Parkes had a tentative start against a strong Quesada team, but then had a winning run of six ends. San Luis were victorious, winning 25-12. These two San Luis teams now play each other in the Final. Ann Holland and Keith Phillips, our Mixed Pairs team, were up against San Miguel, in the Thursday game. Finals: Ann and Keith, were back at Emerald Isle on Friday, for the Mixed Pairs Final, against yet another San Miguel team. GREENS MAINTENANCE - THE NECESSARY EVIL We just entering that period of the year when the courses hollow tine the greens causing a disruption to golf and producing a poor putting surface for a few weeks but just why do they have to do this to us? The surface of a green, colour, density and speed is a combination of the maintenance of the surface but also, about the maintenance of the root-zone. A healthy grass starts from healthy roots. Soil compaction can be a severe problem resulting in restricted root growth, lack of water infiltration into the soil, loss of resilience, weed invasion, disease problems and decline in turf quality. Hollow Tining is used to prevent damage from an excessive soil compaction. It is also very important to provide the needed drainage, for water infiltration and aeration at the root-zone and is done during the warm season when temperatures favour rapid shoot growth and coverage of the turf openings. The use of sand on greens is essential because it helps to digest the organic matter, enhancing the aeration of the root-zone, speed on greens and better recovery from pitch marks. In order to minimize the disruption to golfers, hollow tinning is usually carried out in 2 consecutive journeys so that the 18 greens are aerated in the same week. The surface smoothness restoration process includes top dressing, drag matting and rolling and greens are normally puttable after 3 days with rolling putting surface within 10 days. There you have it…so when you next question the parentage of the green keepers you will understand the just a little more We at THE LEADER are committed to providing to our golfing readers affordable golf without the need to join a club or apply for a card but simply contact the number below to have instant access to discounted golf prices, many of which are exclusive to us.
