he Easy Horse Care Centre has been plunged into crisis as it struggles to pay mounting veterinarian bills for two-year-old foal Lily, who suffered a stable injury in which foul play could not be ruled out.

The incident, which is believed to have been caused by a severe impact to her neck, occurred on July 1, following which X-rays revealed a fractured vertebrae that could leave her permanently disabled. Since that time Lily's condition has gone from bad to worse.

Blood tests revealed the horse was also suffering from tick fever, but she continued to deteriorate despite treatment and was rushed to the Hospital Veterinario San Vicente (the Alicante horse hospital) on July 22.

"We’re obviously very worried that Lily is still so unwell. Veterinarians were unable to save her mother two years ago – she died just six weeks after Lily’s birth – but we dearly hope they can save our girl," said cofounder Sue Weeding.

"It’s hugely expensive for us to send a horse to hospital, but we know Lily needs the best possible specialist care right now, so somehow we will have to find the money to cover it.

"It’s a continual battle and we really do need the public’s help. Every donation pays a bill, it doesn’t matter how large or small,” she said. “So if you would like to donate to help cover Lily’s mounting vet bills, we would be so very grateful."

Local Cleaning Services under fire once again

t’s not only the Orihuela Costa that is being openly criticised by residents who are fed up with the inadequacy of the refuse collection system, and the unacceptable amount of waste that is spilling over onto their streets, as many of their near neighbours from Torrevieja are now ‘up in arms’ about the intolerable levels of prunings, palm trunks, debris and furniture, that have accumulated recently in the Plaza de Los Halcones, close to the beachfront at Los Locos, in the town "The area has become a real dump. Anyone and everyone is using is to offload their waste. Indeed many people I have spoken to think that it is an authorised tip,” said an indignant local resident Pilar Monera.

It used to be quite a pleasant area said Victor Lafuente, but what began as a single builders skip has now grown into a dangerous and unhealthy dump that has substantially changed the appearance of the square and its surrounds.

“All that we want is a clean place to sit and relax with our neighbours and our friends and the green areas restored,” he said.

It would now seem that even some tempers are also beginning to fray as residents have shown their displeasure with the attitude of some people who continue to drop off their rubbish in a serious lack of respect for the people who live adjacent to the site. “Service workers just walk or drive on by paying little heed,” added Lafuente, “and nothing is ever done.” “There have even been a number acts of vandalism even including someone setting

The residents are calling for the tip to be cleared and the park restored to it’s former glory. They also want clear and visible signs to be erected warning people of the consequences of tipping waste on unauthorised land.

Meanwhile on the Orihuela Costa the councillor for street cleaning, Noelia Grao, appeared at a press conference last week outlining the action she is currently taking to ensure that “coastal residents get the service that they deserve.”

Under fire from opposition councillors and resident groups she said that she now had 44 people from the Employment Promotion Plan, who are carrying out tasks of clearing and cleaning streets and landscaped areas. She had also increased the number of staff, hiring 18 temporary workers and extending the working hours of 18 others, although she didn’t exactly specify where the additional staff and hours would be used.

She also said that she had increased the number of refuse containers in use on the coast to 70.

“All these reinforcements and additions will help to streamline the maintenance and cleaning activities on the Orihuela Costa,” she said “in order to ensure the service that residents deserve,” particularly during the peak summer season.” “We are making every effort to maintain the cleanliness of the coast, cleaning the beaches and emptying bins.”

Torrevieja Councillor payments made public Torrevieja’s mayor has taken the unusual step of making public the salaries of all city councillors during 2014 and for the first 6 months of 2015 in what he described as an initiative which demonstrates that he is completely dedicated "to open government and transparency."

With this initiative the mayor says that the usual practice of concealment, that has been practised by the Partido Popular for the last 25 years, is now at an end “Everyone has the right to know what the mayor and council members are costing local taxpayers, be they government councillors or members of the opposition,” he continued.

And just to provide an example of where your money is going, Eduardo Dolon, the PP mayor prior to the last municipal election, was paid a salary of 68,000 euros during the year which increased to 91,924 euros after the payment of social security.

Dolon is currently employed as the Vice President of the Diputación Provincial de Alicante.

Shark attack causes panic at Playa Arenales A

40-year old bather was bitten by a shark whilst swimming off the coast on the Elche beach of playa Arenales del Sol this weekend, causing panic on the beach.

The incident occurred around noon when the man was up to his waist in water and about to dive in the sea, when he noticed a pain in his hand. Upon looking at the hand, he saw a large cut, apparently made by the teeth of “large fish”, which he also witnessed swimming away.

He returned to the beach and immediately sought medical attention, shouting for assistance. Lifeguards on the beach administered

first aid whilst the local police attended and arranged for the injured man to be taken to hospital for further treatment.

One of the rescuers later said that during “nine years” of service, they had “never seen anything like it”, and the only conclusion they can come to is that “it was a shark”

EXTENDED BAR OPENI N G Parking restrictions in HOURS IN TORREVIEJA Torrevieja Centre FOR SUMMER Torrevieja town hall has suspended parking on one of the main streets in the town centre in order to improve the flow of traffic during the busy summer period.

The previous government had implemented the scheme on calle Ramón Gallud in an attempt to boost trade for struggling stores who had been feeling the impact of loss of trade caused firstly by the Habaneras chopping centre, and more recently since the opening of the Zenia Boulevard.

Parking was available for up to an hour a time, although it immediately met with criticism, not least from the police, as there were no real systems in place to monitor this.

From day 1 congestion caused major problems in the town, which is the main arterial route through the centre, and also one frequented by buses, some of whom struggled to get through on account of the cars parked in the way.

Both the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, and councillor for activities, Fanny Serrano, chaired the event, in order to “warn, inform and advise business owners, and users thereof, of the rules and scheduled compliance”, according to Dolón.

Serrano stated that, “there is a lot of confusion with opening and closing times, something that is incomprehensible because everything is specified in the Law".

Although the opening hours are determined by the regional legislation, the local authority can, and did, issue a decree signed by the mayor in May, allowing a change for the summer period between June 17th and September 25th, for Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays.

The amendment only affects establishments within the Group B framework, which are the likes of theatre cafés concerts, entertainment cafés, pubs and karaoke rooms, and special exhibition, who can now remain open an extra 30 minutes, but

must close by 4 in the morning. For those in Group J, which are venues such as internet cafés, restaurants, coffee bars and cafés, they can remain open an hour later, but must close before 0230 in the morning. Finally, those in Group L, banquet halls, must now close by 4 in the morning, also an extension of 30 minutes.

There are other restrictions that may affect individual venues however, and this can be checked with the town hall.

The mayor also pointed out that at closing time, it is important that the closing of the premises is done “diligently”, and "without taking more time", and all music and lights must be stopped.

The group also wish to remind business owners that failure to comply with the times will result in an administrative offence being recorded, imposing appropriate sanctions. In addition, compliance with the ordinance protecting against noise pollution is also vital. Serrano reminded owners of the need to "keep the double doors closed" to fulfil the function for which they are installed so that nobody can hear the noise or music on the street or terrace outside.

Beach safety highlighted by Councillor T orrevieja’s councillor for beaches, Javier Manzanares, issued an appeal last week to all users of Torrevieja’s beaches asking them to respect the beach safety and warning flags that are used extensively throughout the province.

Following more than twenty rescues on the La Mata beach, all taking place in conditions warranting the flying of the red flag, he asked that beachgoers should use their common sense and be aware that they are putting both their lives at risk and the lives of lifeguards at risk.

He explained that the colours of the flags refer to the conditions of water, green indicating that the conditions are calm and it is safe to swim. Yellow is rarely used on the Costa Blanca but it nevertheless indicates that bathing is allowed but there are some restrictions, possibly caused by floating debris or pollution, at which times bathers should only bath if we they can

touch the bottom and always with the head out the water.

Finally the red flag, which is the main cause of concern. This indicates that bathing is completely prohibited. It is used when bathing can put people’s lives at risk.

He also reminded individuals that the beaches are regularly

patrolled by Policia Local who are able to administer on the spot denuncia’s and fines on anyone disregarding the warning flags. The current fine for bathers ignoring a red flag could be as high as 1500 euros which he said that they will not hesitate to invoke.

Increased popularity for Rojales Swimming Lessons Swimming lessons got underway in Rojales last week with 161 registered beginners, 20 more than attended the course last year.

The lessons are being held in the municipal pools located in the municipal sports centre and at Heredades.

The Councillor for Sports, Pedro Llopis, said that it is very important that such training is organised by the local administration, primarily for the safety of children and adults. “Being comfortable in the water will allow individuals to enjoy the summer and avoid risks by not knowing how to swim.”

The courses have been organised by the Department of Sports and are being taught by qualified instructors to suit different ages and schedules. The courses will last until 12 August.

The municipality is paying for more than 50% of the costs of tuition so as to encourage maximum participation. As such the cost for each attendee has been held at just 14 euros.

Over €300 million in pension payouts to dead Spaniards

igures issued by Spain’s Audit Office last week have revealed that over 30,000 people, whose deaths were registered in Spain in the previous year, continued to receive state pensions 12 months after passing away.

Despite their names being correctly recorded on the National Statistics Institute’s (INE) register of deaths there was a total of 29,321 individuals still receiving pensions of €25.3 million per month revealing “holes and deficiencies” in the way authorities keep track of people’s deaths, according to the audit report.

“The INSS doesn’t employ effective controls over who it pays pensions to, and neither do the banks through which pensions are paid,” the Audit Office said, referring to the National Social Security Institute.

According to the Spanish newspaper El Pais, as the social security system is currently undergoing the biggest ever deficit in its history the INSS has been forced to borrow a further €8.7 billion from its reserve fund in order to cover the costs of the summer pension payments.

BREXIT is good for Europe?

As distasteful as the EU referendum has been for many, the referendum process may have been a positive event in ways that were not at first expected. During the 40 plus years that the UK has been a member of the EU, many Europeans have taken its many benefits for granted. In the last decade, there has been considerable and growing apathy towards an expanding European project, which UKIP, the media and cynics have exploited to their full advantage.

Before the referendum, I rarely heard the EU being discussed in a positive light, and those of us who strongly believe in the European project, albeit reformed, have tended to keep their views to themselves.

How events over the last few weeks have changed the topic of conversation and all manner of discussion in our national life. For the first time that I can remember, I am regularly hearing positive comments, as well as negative, being articulated wherever I go; this is a healthy development.

Britain's reluctance to be a full and enthusiastic member of the EU has always been a controversial issue and I suspect that in time, historians will reflect upon the strong opposition of France's President de Gaul, who was strongly opposed to the UK's membership of the Common Market in the 1960s. Maybe he was right in his judgement that Britain was not and never will be European in attitude, and that the insular views of an island community will always prevail.

prised to see public recognition of the EU’s influence upon the country happily and generously acknowledged. Many forget that it was the EU that supported Spain's painful transition from Franco's cruel dictatorship to that of a modern democracy that we see today. Major infrastructure projects, such as new roads, bridges and tunnels are always readily acknowledged, including the flying of three flags: the Spanish flag, the Canarian flag and the European flag. No one is ever in any doubt that these projects have been funded partially or fully by the European Union. Frankly, I have rarely seen similar acknowledgement in the UK of the many projects funded by the EU. As a result, the general public are oblivious and mostly left ignorant of exactly what the EU contributes to their society. Education too must take its fair share of the blame for the public's antipathy towards the EU.

Although the UK has contributed much to the debate over the years, it is clear that its continual negativity, stances on renegotiation, cynicism and refusal to accept shared community values has had a negative impact upon the EU’s development and reform. Without the UK, many see the EU as finally being in a position to fulfil its potential.

During the EU referendum, it was the often stated and cynical wish of many Brexit politicians that the UK’s 'wisdom' in voting for Brexit would cause remaining EU nations to consider their futures within the EU. Much was and continues to be said about the EU rapidly imploding on the basis that the project is doomed following the UK's decision to leave. However, from my understanding of the European press, and those that I speak to, I suspect that the opposite is happening. For the first time in many years, I hear people talking about the EU positively, and appalled at the UK’s decision to go it alone. For the first time I hear people talking and writing about the achievements of the EU, ranging from the peace that it has inspired since the Second World War, and its support and nurturing of democracy in countries entering from the failed Soviet Union. The European Union is by no means perfect, but for the first time many European commentators are talking of a climate of change within the EU, which Brexit has inadvertently encouraged, for the better.

Many European commentators are now seeing Brexit as an opportunity to re-evaluate the values and purposes of this community of nations.

Unlike what is published in the UK media, the European project is not dead, and many European commentators think that Brexit has been a good thing in revealing to Europeans what they may lose should they also choose to follow the Brexit route. I never thought that I would congratulate the result of a Brexit vote, but in the wider context, I suspect that the vote to leave may have done all true Europeans a great favour.

Grease is the word for Totally Dance G

rease was certainly the word when the girls and boys of Totally Dance took part for the 3rd time in the Benijofar Fiesta Parade.

The enthusiastic crowd were treated to a selection of music from the film as well as some iconic dance moves. The group were led by their very own Sandie and Danny followed by their 'Pink Ladies' Senior group sporting custom made jackets . The Mini movers and Juniors followed in their traditional 50's style skirts with the Boys in T Bird T-shirts.

The children's ages range from 2 to 18 years and all of the little ones made it to the end of the parade, despite the very late start time.

The crowd played a big part, cheering them on. As soon as the introduction to Grease Lightening filled the street, there were cheers of recognition, whoos and aarhs at the sights of the little ones in there costumes followed by great applause after the

dance.

The organisation and rehearsal has taken months of preparation. With well over 100 children taking part, there was a lot of shepherding to be done so not to be outdone, some of the Mum's donned costumes, backcombed their hair and joined in the dancing at the back.

The Dance Studio owner and teacher, Susan said ' We have always been one big family here at Totally Dance and it seemed only logical to include some of the mums this year' she went onto say 'The children danced brilliantly and did me, themselves and their parents proud considering it was such a long parade and a very late night' However, the Children will not be resting on their laurels with an Autumn show to prepare for in November in the Cultural Centre in Benijofar showing that they are certainly part of the village and Fiesta Parade.

BY ANDREW ATKINSON Brazilian star striker Vazquinho has returned to CD Montesinos - for the third time - having been signed by the Los Montesinos, Alicante based Segunda Regional Grupo club's new manager Camacho.

Talisman and former player of the year and leading goalscorer Vazquinho - 'Vaz' - held talks with Camacho, who replaced outgoing Roberto Cases at the end of last season, and signed a contract with the Vega Baja outfit.

Vazquinho left CD Montesinos last year to join 1st Regional club Saladar in the wake of coach Juampe being sacked after seven years in charge: "The return of a player is always good, e h t h it Vaz w and that applies to Vazquinho," CD Montesinos midfielder author Dani ORourke told me.

Camacho, who arrived at CD Montesinos from Deportivo Orihuela, has brought in a plethora of players for the 201617 season - five from Deportivo Orihuela .

"We hope to continue keeping the good atmosphere that was here last season," said Dani.

New signings include goalkeeper Chus, who will vie for the Number 1 jersey with Lopez; defender German, who also returns to CD Montesinos after leaving two years ago after an injury hit spell; defender Toni; midfielder Trino, attacking midfielder Lukas; winger Jordi, strikers Mario Lopez, signed from Bigastro, and Vazquinho.

Camacho is expected to add to his current squad, that includes members of the CD Montesinos Youth, prior to the 2016-17 season commencing in September.

Pre-season friendlies have been arranged at The Municipal, Los Montesinos, against Torrevieja CF (August 17); San Isidro (August 26); Racing San Miguel (September 3) and Bigastro (September 10).

"We hope to have a good 2016-17 season - and achieve the objectives - it's about time," added Dani.

The weather and condition of the course was excellent for golf and the organisers were looking forward to some really good scores being returned at the conclusion of the event.

Zoe Connolly swimming in the last individual race of the day worked hard in her 100m Individual Medley race to knock 2 seconds off her recent PB and winning 3rd place with an added prize of a free ticket to Aqualandia, Benidorm. Well done girls an excellent end to the season.

Then Sunday all were back in action, this time sea swimming at Torre de la Horadada. This year the organizers reversed the course making all 4 races

swim anti-clockwise around the bay, constantly against the tide and wind.

This was the hardest race from the last five years of competitions at this location. Amy made a good swim in the 500m race being placed 9th in the Alevin category with a time of 12:09. Next it was time for the furthest distance race – 1500m. Zoe came in before her other team members being placed 6th in her Alevin category, with a time of 26:40.

Shortly followed by Skye, a year younger , but in the same category with a time of 29:00. Next in was Vicki Connolly in theWomen’s Masters 50+ category. Vicki won 1st place for her category.

Teammate Beryl Altabas came in 5th in the same category with a time 36:15.

Well done to all – looking forward to the next season starting in September.

THE 1900 OLYMPIC GAMES in Paris allowed female athletes for the first time. For the majority of the 22 ladies who entered sport was just a leisure pursuit. American Margaret Abbott, who was studying art in Paris, entered, together with her mother, a 9-hole golf event they believed to be the Ladies Championship of Paris. Margaret won with a score of 47 and was presented with a commemorative bowl, her mother came seventh. The organisation was so shambolic the ladies didn’t even realise they had been competing in the Olympics! Margaret was in fact the USA’s first Olympic Lady Champion.

IN THE 1904 OLYMPICS in St Louis, Missouri, the golf tournament attracted 75 amateurs from the USA and Canada. Chandler Egan, aged 20, was the U.S. Amateur champion and hot favourite. In the final, however, in horrendous conditions, he came up against 46-year-old superfit Canadian George Lyon, who battled through the wind and rain to win by 3&2, and afterwards walked round the celebration dinner table on his hands, while Egan went home exhausted.

GEORGE LYON crossed the Atlantic in 1908, keen to compete in the London Olympics. A six-round tournament was scheduled at Royal St. George’s, Princes GC, and Royal Cinque Ports. However, the R & A were sniffy about golf in the Olympics, and after a dispute over player eligibility all the British entrants pulled out, leaving a disappointed Lyon the only competitor. Offered the gold medal, he refused it.

BRAZIL IS SAID to be among the drug-taking capitals of the world. If the Olympic athletes aren’t on banned substances when they arrive in Rio they probably will be by the time they leave.

PAUL BROADHURST (50) winner of the Senior Scottish Open in 2015, now qualifies for next year's Open Championship at Royal Birkdale after winning the Senior Open at Carnoustie with a bogey-free 68. Miguel Angel Jimenez (52) is still looking for his first major. He started Sunday four shots in the lead but two double bogeys put paid to his chances, and he finished joint-third with a 75.

DUSTIN JOHNSON was asked to demonstrate his swing at a photo shoot in the ballroom at PGA National, Palm Beach. Unfortunately his ball went straight through the practice net, out through the crack in the swing doors and smashed the exit sign at the far end of the entrance hall. AROUND AND ABOUT THE COURSES - RODA Roda will hold their LA FIESTA DEL GOLF for the 5th consecutive year which will take place from Monday 1st to Sunday 7th August 2016.

The Roda Golf & Beach Resort Fiestas started four years ago as an initiative of the Roda Golf Course Members. The original idea was to organize a fiesta were members and house owners of Roda of all nationalities could get together and organize different activities such as golf, paddle, tennis, karaoke, face painting, jumping bag races for kids, etc. The success was such that friends of friends came (around 5500 people last year) and this has now been “declared officially” the Fiestas of the Resort.

This year, with the aim of bringing even more people to the resort, they want to offer the possibility to play 18 holes at Roda Golf Course for only €30 at any time during this week. Buggies are at their usual low season rate of 12€. This means €36 per person shared buggy included or €42 for 1 x Green Fee &buggy However the festive spirit does not finish there as they will be holding clinics (aimed to beginners) for both adults and juniors for only €5.

They will also do a Speed Golf tournament (1 hole) on Monday 1st August 2016.

This will be one of the most fun moments of the Fiestas program. The entry for this tournament is FREE but everybody is welcome to come and watch.

On Tuesday 2nd August 2016 they will hold a Footgolf tournament which is a 9 hole event in pairs where competitors play golf with their feet and a football and again entry is FREE. On Wednesday 3rd August 2016 they will hold the amusing Friends Cup which is a 9 hole tournament with each team comprising an RFEG player and a non player with the non golfer doing all the putting only.

The highlight of the Fiesta del Golf will be the 3rd running of the charity tournament “Food Aim” where the registration fee would be €30 + a compulsory donation of a minimum of three non-perishable foods such as: packages of rice, pasta, flour, canned food, oil, sugar, etc. All foods will be given to Cáritas San Javier.

This tournament will be open to federated and non-federated players and last year 170 players took part in the event.

Rockets Golf Society at Alicante It was one of those hot, hot Spanish Summer Days when the temperatures were higher than some of the point’s scored. Sadly, the turnout was down in numbers due to holidays and injuries, but those who played enjoyed the joys of the ever improving Alicante Golf.

SAN MIGUEL GS AT LA FINCA GOLF COURSE - Bogey’s Shield

The heat and summer vacations, as well as the fact that some don’t like playing a medal competition, saw SMGS’ first relatively low turnout for a very long time, with only 26 members and 2 guests making it.

Committee members had arrived early to participate in their regular quarterly meeting, and saw the cooler part of the day, temperatures having risen considerably by the time of the first tee off at 11.10. Of course, by the time everyone had finished many had baked, and ciders, claras and straight pints (all deliberately mentioned in the plural!!) went down very well.

The course, set up pretty long, was in good condition, but with slow greens where the longer than normal grass, presumably so to protect from scorching from the sun, seemed to have a nap which not only

made reading breaks difficult, but which seemed to send the ball off along unrecognisable channels. Thus many found putting difficult.

Three players posted excellent scores, Roy Willing with 71, Brian Mulligan with 70, and President Phil Birtwistle, clearly trying to win his son’s restaurant’s donated prize with a superb 69, throwing in (not literally!!) an eagle at the par 5 11th to boot with an approximate, according to those nearby, 150 metre chip in to the cup. Well played El Presidente! Perhaps early starts and Committee meetings beforehand are good for your game. Maybe we should have more!! Proposers!!

The day’s medal competition results, by category and in reverse order, and with only 3 prizes being given in each this week because of the numbers turning out, were the following: Bronze Category: 3rd Chris Ayres (77), 2nd last month’s category winner here Brian Mulligan (70), and 1st Phil Birtwistle with his aforementioned eagle including net 69.

Silver Category: 3rd Matt Newman (75), 2nd Steve Davis (74), and 1st Roy Willing with a cut inducing net 71.

Gold Category: 3rd Mike Frankish (80), 2nd John Osborne (75), and 1st, Order of Merit leader Steve Higgins with a net 74.

Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Mike Jordan (hole 3), Barry Roehrig (6), Darren Temple (13) and Tony Smale (16).

The Abacus was won by Norman McBride.

Mid August opening planned at San Luis A "TOPPING OUT " ceremony was held at San Luis Bowls Club last week as the last section of concrete was being poured on the new bowling green.

Four fantastic workers Juan, Adrian, Marcello and Antonio have done a fabulous job and the members are already delighted with what looks as though it is going to be an excellent surface, a vast improvement on the previous rinks.

Carrying out the work are Greengauge, a Scottish company based in East Lothian, and the market leading suppliers of artificial bowling surfaces, preferred by bowlers worldwide.

Local representative Jackie Breslin, himself a former international bowler and more recently the coach of the national squad, told the Leader that the New Greengauge carpet should be installed by 18th August, just in time for the start of the new lawn bowling season in Spain.

With the venues still to be selected for the Valencian championships, which get underway in late September, San Luis Bowls Club, based at Casa Ventura, could well be one of the favourites to host the tournament.

QUESADA @ Lo Romero Golf Wednesday 27th July 2016 A turnout of our maximum 20 players even in the summer time heat, taking advantage of the offer from the course of €41 Green Fee & Buggy. The course was in great condition, nicely manicured fairways and greens. The weather as expected for this time of year was pretty uncomfortable for most. Today we decided to play a team Waltz as well as Individual Stableford. We also had a roll over on the two's sweep and two players managed to scoop the prize fund, well done John Sanchez and Tony Stead, how Jim Gaw failed to make a 2 foot putt for his two no one knows. Only two players managed to break Par on the day, both sharing 37 points. The highlight for one group was that of Steve Fleet deciding to go for a swim half way round to cool off. Waist deep in the water the only draw back from this was that his playing partners didn’t get it on video…… A full list of scores is available on the Society Golfing page or by visiting the Master scoreboard website. Las Ramblas Golf Society Mike Chapman We started the week with a Team Counter Game where the number of scores are not known until reaching the next tee. In the event a total of 46 were required and the winning team with a superb 106 pts were Nick and Donna Campbell, Brian Dent and Brian Townend. In second place with 99 pts were Joyce and Allen McClusky, Doug Wright and 'Albert'.

On Wednesday we played our normal weekly stableford competition and it was the in form player of the moment Brian Townend who was the only player to beat par with an excellent 39 pts. Torry experiments continue despite defeat

N

ew manager Gabi Correa is certainly leaving no blade of grass unturned, as he continues to try out new blood in a totally new look Torry squad. He has brought in another 3 experienced players since the Elche match, adding much needed support to his mainly youthful outfit. Welcome Marcano, Zapata, and Pablo Navas ( the only 1 of the 3 to make his debut). Marcano is a goalkeeper, who last season played with div 2b side Eldense. Zapata a 27 year old striker, who last season played for div 3 champions Conquense, whilst 24 year old winger Pablo Navas can list Alcoyano, Lucena, Portsmouth and Cowdenbeath, amongst his previous clubs. Against a side who last season only just missed out on play off promotion to div 2A, they were more their equal for long periods. In

CD Torrevieja ....................0 Real Murcia .......................4 fact, they left the starting block by far the quickest, coming close to scoring on 2 occasions within the first 5 mins. Amongst the thick of the action was Cesar (a striker with an eye for a goal), who has returned to the club following his release early this year, joining Vicente as the only

other member of last seasons squad on display (although both Martin and Luis Carlos were spotted in the crowd). They were unlucky not to take the lead on 34 minutes, when Johnny´s acute close range shot smacked against the post before bouncing to safety. This miss proved costly, for within 3 mins Roberto received a cross from the right just inside the box, before rifling a low shot past Torry keeper Oumar. Only 2 mins later and the visitors had doubled their advantage, when a pull back from the dead ball line found Roberto, who again made no mistake. From a corner on 42 mins, Jon Iru leapt salmon like to fiercely head home goal number 3, as the visitors were running riot. On the stroke of half time, a well struck free kick rattled the cross bar with Oumar well beaten, and probably shell shocked at what had occurred during the previous 8 mins.

Once again, Torry changed the whole 11 players at half time, whilst their opponents chose to replace only 4 (although on 60 mins, another 6 substitutes were introduced). Unlike last week, these young lads certainly put up a fight, not conceding the 4th goal until the 78th min, when a well struck drive found the inside of the far post.

Congratulations must be given to referee Perez Alcocer, who officiated this pre season friendly sensibly, choosing not to issue a single caution throughout the whole 90 minutes.

Carp-R-Us Club News On the 28th of July the Clubs anglers fished round 10, the final round of our Summer series of matches. It was on the Eden Canal section of the River Segura in Guardamar.

The river is still in a poor state of health with very low levels of water and no flow on it at all. It has almost a stagnant look about it but the turtles seem to like it as they are there in abundance.

The winner of the match on the day was Steve Fell with 3.54kg Pole and bread. 2nd was Mark Foden with 2.80kg on the method and corn. 3rd was Roy Buttress with 2.18kg on feeder and maggot, 4th Steve Collins on Pole and bread.

With this result it means that Andy Foden has won the series by 1 point from his son Mark,WELL DONE to both of you.

The match on the 4th of August will be the start of the August Mini series, the first match will be on the Embalse de Pedrera- pegs at 8.00 and fishing 9.00 to 1.00pm.

The Clubs next Sunday meeting will be on the 7th of August. Committee at 10.30 followed by the General meeting at 11.00am.

Our next Quiz night will be on Tuesday the 9th of August starting at 7.30pm. Teams of up to 6 can take part and the cost is 1 Euro per person.

The Clubs home is at the Bar El Alto La Dolores which is to be found just off a roundabout on the N332 between La Mata and Guardamar.

San Juan Annual Beach 7’s this weekend This coming weekend is the annual 19th San Juan beach 7’s tournament down in front of the Restaurante Mediterraneo starting at 10.00 and going on well into the evening, always a great day out of rugby.

On the Costa Cobras RFC front we had plenty of people down training on the beach this week, both Spanish and English, a great step forward for the club and looking at more coming down this coming week.

We also have been approached by José María Mena the owner of Europa House, from the Sun House Group over here in Spain, to sponsor the club with there own pitch with the backing of Guardamar Town Hall, subject to permission from Madrid.

Also a lot of enquiries coming through for touring teams from the UK, ladies, seniors, vets and juniors so will be looking for teams to play them for next year, this will be great experience for all the rugby clubs in the Alicante/Valencian and Murcia area.

Costa Cobras RFC training is on Monday and Wednesday from 20.00-21.30 on Guardamar beach in front of the restaurants in July and August, by the Red Cross place.
