Closing off Cabo Roig walkway was a huge mistake! ollowing his accusation that Orihuela Councillors Almagro and Alvarez lied ‘shamelessly’ at the November Council Plenary meeting, when they are alleged to have declared that they had no knowledge about the Elche Court of Appeal decision regarding the closure of the Cabo Roig Walkway, PSOE spokesman Antonio Zapata has called for their resignation with immediate effect.

He said that the expropriation of the walkway is simply not good enough. “For something that was always ours, we are now going to have to pay an exorbitant price."

The story, which was first reported in the Leader last Monday, relates to the 30 year battle over the Paseo de Cabo

Having initially been declared illegal by both the

Torrevieja council accused of concealing Pascual Flores Fate Many government councillors feel that the boat should be scrapped

T

he PP have once again criticized the Torrevieja council as schooner the Pascual Flores remains harboured without a license to navigate The councillor, Eduardo Gil Rebollo (PP), accused the government team of negligence as he repeated his request for access to the file while the ship, which cost more than 4.6 million euros, remains stranded in the port.

Gil says that despite repeated requests for information he still awaits contact from the town hall authorities. He says that the boat doesn’t even possess the necessary license so that it can be moved to a point where it can be repaired. "As of today the Pascual Flores has no licenses to carry out any maritime functions whatsoever. It is completely stranded and it would need a complete prior to being moved, "he continued.

The councillor has repeatedly denounced the Torrevieja government stating back in July and then again in August that the ships navigation and seaworthy certificates have both expired. He added that during the PP administration the Pascual Flores was properly maintained as it was provided with the respect that the historic vessel deserved .

The Pascual Flores is a historic 3-masted schooner, a onetime star of the TV series ‘The Onedin Line.

She was the last sailing ship built on the beach in

Torrevieja during the early part of the last century.

After her trading career finished she was British owned and based at Dartmouth and then Bristol.

The ship was rescued in Milford Haven and brought back to her home port of Torrevieja on a heavy lift ship where, in 2008, she was restored at a cost, in the region, of 4 million euros.

She was completely overhauled in the North African port of Algeciras just last year at a further cost of 18,000 euros following which the director of the Nao Victoria Foundation said that the Pascual Flores was in good condition and remained a great attraction for Mediterranean sailors. He said that it was the intention of the Foundation to show it off worldwide.

Many government councillors feel that after spending in excess of 5 million euros over the last 25 years on what is little more than a ‘white elephant’ it will be totally irresponsible to continue with such funding.

Gil Rebollo further criticised Councillor Fanny Serrano, who is responsible for planning in the town, saying that said she continues to show a lack of transparency regarding the necessary licenses to reopen the Theatre, the Cultural centre and the headquarters of the CCOO workers union, all of which remain closed due to health and safety fears.

Three arrested in Daya Couple found dead insideTorrevieja Flat Nueva after stabbing

A

couple were found dead inside an apartment in Torrevieja last week. The 63-yearold woman was found in an advanced state of decomposition and may well have died a few weeks ago, while the man, aged 67, is thought to have only recently passed away.

The Guardia Civil and Bomberas were called to the house at 7pm on Tuesday evening by the woman’s son who had not been able to contact her for some weeks. On arriving at the property, a first floor apartment located in la calle Bella Antonia, in the neighbourhood of Nueva Torrevieja, they found the lifeless bodies of a man and a woman.

Alicante’s Guardia Civil have arrested three men, two Moroccans aged 44 and 27, aiding and abetting, and an Algerian aged 38, who is alleged to have caused serious injury to his wife last Monday.

The attacker was found later that same day at the house of his daughter where he was hiding in the company of two other men. All three were arrested and are currently awaiting a date for a court hearing.

The Civil Guard Judicial Police and the Torrevieja coroner confirmed that there are no apparent signs of violence. The first assumption is that both died of natural causes.

According to neighbours the couple, the woman from New Guinea and her Spanish husband, have lived in the flat for approximately 8 years, having moved into the area from Madrid. They are both said to have had a problem with drink but quite why the husband failed to report the earlier death of his wife is a complete mistery.

Neighbors were visibly shocked with the event, one of whom said that he had never met them, even though they had been residing in the building for eight years. “They kept themselves to themselves”, he said, “as a result of which no one thought to report the very bad smell that was coming from the flat.”

Alicante arrests in firearms raids

The Guardia Civil has detained thirty people belonging to a criminal organization dedicated to the acquisition and sale of firearms over the Internet. The arrests, all part of Operation Vulpes III took place in several Spanish Provinces, including Alicante, Murcia and Almeria, resulting in the dismantling of two concealed workshops.

Reports indicate that in total the agents have seized 124 firearms and more than 14,100 metal cartridges, in addition to many other weapon related effects.

The two undercover workshops were located in Albacete and Vizcaya, where the weapons and ammunition were repaired or modified following which the sales were carried out over the Internet.

The investigations have been directed by the Court of Instruction number 1 in La Roda (Albacete).

Coordinated by Europol, the operation was carried out within Spain by the Guardia Civil Information

Department with the support of their Headquarters in Andalusia and Catalonia and stations in Seville, Barcelona, Vizcaya, Madrid, Murcia, Granada, Cordoba, Huelva, Jaén , Alicante, Tarragona, Badajoz, A Coruña and Almeria.

The arrests now bring to an end the current phase of the operation which began last April when the Civil Guard discovered twenty-three pistols and 450 cartridges, making one arrest in the province of Albacete. It has now been established that particular operation was dedicated to procuring weapons from countries of Eastern Europe.

As a result of the Albacete arrest, the agents were able to initiate phase two in which they made the additional discoveries and arrests.

Of the 124 firearms found, the majority, 117, are short, pistols and revolvers, in addition to which agents seized six silencers, 14,100 metal cartridges of different calibers, six kilos of gunpowder and eight hundred primers.

Continued from Page 1 As he presided over the demolition, Antonio Zapata, Orihuela Councillor for Planning at the time, declared that opening the paseo was long overdue, but what he didn’t reckon on was the resolve of the Bellavista Residents Association.

Led by Community President Brian Honess, Bellavista then went back to the courts where they proved to the Judge, Mr Salvador Bellmont Lorente, and to the courts, that the walkway directly along the seawall and in front of the urbanisation has always been private land, and they were completely within their rights to section it off from access to the general public.

They argued that the original walkway was actually located at the bottom of the cliff face and not along the top of the urbanisation, as originally stated by Antonio Zapata, the Orihuela Town Council Planning Officer at the time. The judge had no hesitation in finding with the Residents and he immediately ordered that the wall sealing off the paseo be reinstated.

Orihuela Council then had 15 days to appeal but, according to Zapata, the judgement papers festered in a council drawer. It seems that the deadline was surpassed with no one in authority being briefed as to the court decision.

At a press conference last Wednesday Zapata said that "the incompetence, neglect and lack of management by Councillors Almagro and Alvarez now means that we have now lost the right to appeal to the Supreme Court.” He added that he still felt “there were more than sufficient arguments as the pathway fell within the protection of the coastal authority.”

However pressure put on the Orihuela Council by both the FAOC (La Federación de Asociaciones de Orihuela Costa) and CLARO,

Monday 12th - Sunday 18th December, 2016 immediately the story first broke, and not Antonio Zapata, saw the Councillor for Tourism, Sofia Alvarez state that steps would quickly be taken to expropriate the land currently utilising the walkway, which I understand to mean either the compulsory purchase or a long term leasing agreement, usually involving a financial compensation package. The arrival of Cllr Zapata onto the scene came some days later.

Whilst Cllr Almagro also went on record on Wednesday stating in a press release that Orihuela Council will seek an agreement with the Bellavista redidents to keep the Aguamarina walkway open, Community President Brian Honess had no comment to make regarding the expropriation telling the Leader that “Bellavista’s legal team and administrator will be starting talks with the Town Hall this week to re-instate the walls and the gates that they knocked down illegally.’

And then, just 24 hours latern Cllr Almagro issued a further press release stating that he felt the opening of the walkway between Aguamarina and Cabo Roig had been a huge mistake. He further announced that following the Appeal Court Decision, discussions were held between the Provincial Directorate of Coasts and the solicitor who brought the case, Pau Agulló, to assess the judgment, following which it was felt that another appeal would just heap further expense on the city with there being little likelihood of the judgement being overturned.

But of course the question now is where do we go from here?

There seems little doubt that the Urbanisation will reinstate the wall during the coming days and that the Orihuela councillors are shifting the blame wherever, and as quickly as they can. Although Almagro

QUIRÓN HOSPITAL APPEAL FOR TOYS The Hospital Quirónsalud in Torrevieja is launching its solidarity campaign "The Christmas Charity Quirónsalud Project" until the 13th of December.

It is appealing for people to donate toys and Christmas sweets for disadvantaged children in the town. They should be left in the in the hall of the hospital.

The donations will go to the NGO Solidarity Food and Caritas Torrevieja.

The appeal is being supported by the Real Estate Association of La Vega Baja which is working with over fifty associations of foreign residents.

There will be a carol concert in the Hospital Reception area on Tuesday the 13th at 7pm to which everyone is invited.

Ciudadanos call for Public Toilets to be opened in Torrevieja

The Ciudadanos spokeswoman of the municipal group, Pilar Gómez, has requested that the City Council install public toilets in the main areas of the city. The councillor said that the people who live in the city, mainly elderly and retired, are in need of such facilities which are currently badly lacking.

“Anyone who needs to use a toilet must currently resort to visiting one of the cafés, bars or restaurants that line the sea front,” she said. “with the toilets that are currently in situ only open during the summer season.”

The absence of public toilets was one of the most repeated criticisms of both Los Verdes and the PSOE when they were opposition, and whilst in power even the PP promised to establish public toilets around the town, but they failed to carry it out.

At the beginning of this term of office, Mayor Jose Manuel Dolón (Los Verdes) also said that he would introduce the service, which he has not yet done.

PLATFORM ASK FOR LO FERRIS EXEMPTION After the councillor of Beaches announced that the beach at Cala de Ferrís will be among the options considered for the Torrevieja doggie beach, the Platform Salvemos Lo Ferrís has appealed for the location to be excluded from any decision.

At the recent monthly meeting of the group, members agreed that the area continues to suffer from suffocating environmental and social pressures, so it needs time to recover. The cove is still considered to be at risk which the Platform is working to minimize.

The meeting also addressed steps its members can take to achieve further protection for the site. In addition to insisting that all permissions to build be annulled, and the so-called 'wall of shame' be demolished.

Gastroenteritis kills two at Guardamar old people’s home

T

wo women aged 75 and 85 died on Friday night following an outbreak of gastroenteritis that at the Casa Verde Old People’s Home in Guardamar del Segura. A further 18 residents fell ill, five of whom were transferred to the University Hospital in Torrevieja.

The normal tranquillity of Saturday morning was shattered with the arrival, around noon of the Civil Guard and a unit of the Judicial Police. In total, about 10 agents arrived at the residence, quickly establishing a police cordon around the perimeter.

Public Health officials also moved to the geriatric hospital on Saturday morning to carry out an epidemiological study and analysis, which they hope will help them to determine the origin of the outbreak, although according to one member of the team, it will still take time to find out exactly to the exact origin of the disease.

The five people who were transferred to Torrevieja Hospital were all admitted to the observation unit, all of whom were said to be responding favourably to treatment. A doctor employed at the residence said that no other inmates have been affected by the outbreak The Casa Verde group has a total of three residences throughout the Vega Baja, the affected centre at Guardamar as well as Almoradí and Pilar de la Horadada, both of which continue to operate normally.

The officials are working on two main areas, food poisoning or an outbreak of viral origin, although they were careful to point out that there could be other causes, which are also being investigated.

The centre management are currently declining to make any comment or statement.

Cuba, Castro and the Canary Islanders

T

he death of Cuba’s former President and Prime Minister, Fidel Castro, has provoked much attention in the media this week.

Reaction has covered the entire spectrum of emotion ranging from detestation of a man seen as a tyrant and persecutor of his people, to elaborate praise heaped upon a man seen as saving Cuba from potential ravages and exploitation by the United States. Whatever the truth, which as always depends upon which side of the political spectrum one is standing, most will agree that Fidel Castro was a controversial and divisive world figure, and someone that could not be ignored. As far as the Canary Islands are concerned, the story of Fidel Castro and his link to these islands has fascinated me for some time.

During the Seventeenth Century, overpopulation of the Canary Islands motivated Spain to ‘export’ Canarian families to its American colonies in a ‘tribute of blood’. Five Canarian families were sent to a colony in Cuba for every ton of cargo sent, but the numbers of Canarian families emigrating were often much higher. Unemployment in the Canary Islands continued until the Nineteenth Century, when more islanders migrated to Cuba to find work, to avoid starvation and to avoid Spanish military service. The Twentieth Century was a time when Spain was in the midst of a civil war and firmly in the grip of its dictator, General Franco. History has been harsh for Canary Islanders who have had to cope with drought, attacks by pirates, locusts, harsh taxes, epidemics and even volcanic eruptions in 1730, so migration to Cuba and other destinations in Central and South America must have

At the same time Angela Resigned as Treasurer having served 11 years on the Committee in various positions. A very large part of our lives has been spent fulfiling our various roles over the years, so now we can look forward to spending many hours on other interests that we have.

The 3rd Round of the winter series was fished on the El Bosquet fishery, on 8th December. Winner on the day was Tom Marshall with 6.02kg, second was Dave Hoare with 4.44kg, third was Steve Fell with 3.58kg and in fourth place Steve Collis with 2.98kg. 11 anglers caught.

The next match on 15th December is the Fur and Feather- a one off match held every year prior to Christmas. This will be on the Eden Canal low numbers . Some peg clearing is necessary, so please come along on Monday December 12th at 8.30.

The last Sunday meeting of the year will be on December 18th, with the Committee meeting at 10.30 followed by the General meeting at 11.00.

Monday brought a trip to La Siesta to play The Apollos, on a wet mat after a very wet day and night. As we know some rinks can be a little tricky and you can be well behind before you find the lines. But the company was good and the rain held off, but we came away with just the one rink.

Another great result from our team this week, beating the Emerald lsle all stars 10-2 it was a very satisfying win, two games were very tight but went our way we are pleased to say. SAL league, nothing to rejoice about here, the Albatrosses had a nightmare playing the Pulsars at San Miguel only coming away with one point, not good!

The Drivers went all the way to MonteMar for two points against the Matadors, that came from the trip of J Chaplin, S Norris & I Kenyon.

The Eagles had a bye.

Southern league A. The Lanzadores had a successful day at San Luis against the mighty Lions, three winning rinks and a drawn rink, congratulations to the team, not an easy green. Picadors were at home to the Greenlands Oaks, two winning rinks and also the shot difference...just!

Southern league C. The Conquistadores away to Greenlands Cedars had a blip this week and lost their game 4-10. They will be back fighting fit after Christmas.

In the Winter League, San Miguel played against Greenlands coming away with 8 points. The following week, they played San Luis and only managed to pick up 2 points. The Comets played La Marina Pathfinders away, winning on 4 rinks and a close overall shots 101 to 98. Comets didn't do as well against Emerald Isle Titans only winning on one rink. Well done to Joe Getgood, Dave Bradbury, Bob Donnelly winning 24-10. Overall shots 102 for the Comets, 118 against.

The Jaguars had a great result away at La Siesta coming away with 12 points. Shots for 116, against 75. The good news for the Jaguars first game away at La Manga was that it was cancelled due to torrential rain!!!!! The bad news is, we still have to play it within seven days!!!!!

La Marina Bowls Club By Barry Latham Both teams had close matches on Monday, one winning and one just losing. The unlucky losers were the Explorers, both sides winning 3 rinks but Quesada Pearls getting the overall shots. Tom Spencer, Mike Smith and Anne Stone won by one shot whereas Anne’s hubby, Mike had the highest winning rink with the help of Ron Maiden and Roger Stacey. Dave Hadaway, Margaret Finlayson and Janet Parsons were the other winners. Just the same for the Pathfinders against the Monte Mar Toreadors except the other way round, we had the overall shots for an eight – six win. Our victorious winners were John Rae, Martin Butler and Jean Tregoing; Barry Sadler, Bernie Carr and Lorita Rae and Dave Taylor, Paul Tregoing and Mo Taylor. Well done the husbands and wives. Oh dear, oh dear. Winter League dropped below our average this week only getting one point against a strong Quesada side. Lovely to meet up with old friends and I managed with great help from Pete Parsons, Kathy Manning and Wendy Latham our single point. Well we finished the week on a high note when none of the three teams playing lost.

home to the Monte Mar Matadors and won 11-3.

Alex Whyte, Margaret Finlayson and Hilary Cronk managed a draw. Unfortunately an accident stopped play so John Mallett, Ron Maiden and Maureen Kidd also won. The Seagulls won 10-4 against Country Bowls Geckos with Colin Armitage, Arthur Cronk and Ann Stone winning a very close game. Even closer was the game won by Jim Freeman, Steve Hindle and Steve Douglas who won it on the last end. John Morgan, Mike Stone and Lynne Armitage had the highest winning rink. While Barry and Wendy Latham plus Barbara Forshaw carried on their winning ways. The Dolphins playing away at San Miguel against the Cougars had a great draw winning 3 ? to 2 ? rinks and just losing out on the overall shots by four. Brian Duff, Cliff Rawlinson and Martin Butler; John Withers, Mike Smith and Shirley Withers and John Rae, Dave McGaw and Allan Wilcock all won. Bill Jones, Carol Smith and Jack Chorlton drew.

La Siesta Bowls Club By Rod Edgerton Cracking Result for the Apollos beating El Rancho Pintos at home by 150 shots to 60 gaining 12 points to there opponents 2 keeping the team at the top of the table. Best result came from Irene Laverick, Ramsay Sinclair & Brian Gardiner 38 6 leading from start to finish and after 9 ends the score was 24-1 .Dawn & John Taylor and Harold Chareleton also won 30 - 5. Closely followed were Barbara Jack & Jean Cooper winning 28 - 5,another team which lead from beginning. Sheila Chorley,Trish and Pat Reilly won 20 - 10 coming from behind on the 9th end picking up 15shots on the last 9 ends. Finally Ann & Robert Heath with Brian Fraser won 20-15.

Not such good news for the Pioneers who lost by 123-79 to Emerald Isle Moonrakers on a very heavy green.The sole winners were Dennis Andrew,Penny Porter and Rab Logan 21-14. 12 points go to Emerald Isle and 2 to the Pioneers.

Two Winter League matches this week both resulting in 12-2 defeats. The first on Saturday away at Quesada by 120 shots to 77. The winning rink was Barbara Cooper,Tony Campbell,George Richardson and Jean Cooper who held on to win 16-15. On Wednesday our visitors Greenlands won by 89 shots to 87 with Janet Charman,Trish Reilly,Tony Dalton and Brian Gardiner winning for La Siesta by an excellent 34-12.

The Blues travelled to El Rancho Mustangs and on a green which most visiting teams find tricky this was no different for La Siesta who lost 14-0 with a shots scoreline of 67-138.

The Golds were away at Horadada Royals and lost 10 points to 4 with a score difference of 77126.Winners for the Golds were Hilary Clarke,Fred Charman and Tony Dalton 25-16 and Ron Sheldon,Val Dalton and Sid Gallup 16-13

Strong Finnish show at Torry Tenpin Open The 5th Torrevieja Open arranged at Ozone Bowling ended in an impressive final round, where the top eight semi-finalists bowled a one game round robin. The initial score of the final day was 50% of the pins carried over from qualification. In the round robin, each match victory also gave an extra 30 bonus points.

Finnish bowling legend Sami Konsteri held his position until the end and cashed the 3,000-euro top prize. The Finnish contribution was spectacular in every way, as Konsteri was accompanied in the final by three young countrymen of his: Santtu Tahvanainen, Tomas Käyhkö and Lauri Sipilä, the first two of them using the increasingly popular two-handed style.

The other finalists were the Norwegians Øyvin Kulseng and Svein Åke Ek, Lucian Paraschiv of Romania, and Ozone’s popular host, Lorenzo Quereda. The results of the finals (in brackets, the scratch average and bonus points): Sami Konsteri 4,270 (226.14 / 120) Svein Åke Ek 4,115 (224.14 / 150)

The top trophy of Category B wnt to EBT’s Martti Timonen with the straight result of 1,261. Runnerup was Sami Konsteri’s 13-year-old daughter Peppi (1,221), and EBT’s Manuel Priego took third place (1,181). Also in Category C, victory came "home" through EBT’s David March (1,108). Manuel Rodríguez of Madrid was Runner-up (1,073) and EBT's Helge Brochmann came third (1,066).

Ozone Bowling was packed with spectators and the atmosphere was dense. A new feature this year was a live-streaming service, which allowed the event to be watched live on Youtube. The arrangements received lots of praise from the participants, so the success story is expected to continue in next year’s competition.

LAS RAMBLAS GOLF SOCIETY

By Mike Chapman There was a distinct threat of rain in the air on Monday which put off a few members from turning up for our planned Change Partners game so with fewer numbers it was decided to play an individual stableford competition.

In the event the rain stayed away and the winner with a score of 35 pts was Olga Douglas.

The weather had improved for our normal Wednesday stableford competition and there was an excellent turn out. Unlike last week it was Category One that led the way with a count back being required to separate the top two on 36 pts. Despite a light shower those that turned up completed their rounds and the winners with a score of 69 were Ron Phipps and Geoff Biggerstaff. In second place with a score of 71 were Lindsay Forbes and John Shervell.

San Miguel Golf Society at Villamartin Villamartin is always popular with members and 42 turned out for SMGS’s monthly gathering at the course which was in pretty good condition after all the rain we have had lately. Barry Roehrig announced that the society had just donated 350-00 euro to The Pink Ladies, 350-00 euro to Paul Cunningham Nurses and 460-00 euro this year’s Royal British Legions Poppy Appeal, which made a total during the year close to 3000-00 euro raised for various charities out of the infamous blob tin, well done to all at S.M.G.S. especially Mr. Extractor Tony Smale!

We met on a cold but sunny morning at Las Colinas course achieve the heady heights of over 29 points, John Thompson with 30 points. to compete for a trophy kindly sponsored by Barclay’s Nearest the pins were spread between just two players estate agency in la marina. ,Iain Lyall and John Lywood with two each.

Unfortunately for some of us , buggies had to remain on Iain went home very happy after also achieving the only 2 the paths which on an undulating course meant much of the day . walking and climbing.

We were pleased to welcome 2 new members to the fold, This resulted perhaps in the relatively low scoring , namely Dave Williams and dave spence and wish them a although outgoing captain Jimmy Scott defied the odds happy association with the society. and took the trophy with an excellent 34 points ,also winAlso congratulations to our new captain Elspeth Craig and ning the silver medal. we wish her a successful year.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society By David Swann A nearly record breaking attendance of 24 members and guests saw 12 teams of 2 players competing in a 'Greensome' competition on Tuesday, 6th December.

Pride of place must go to Maureen Bliss, who, in her 1st and only guest appearance at El Plantio managed a 'Hole-in-One' on hole 6 and assisted her playing partner to win the competition. This is the 3rd 'Hole-in-One' within 9 days. It must be too easy.

Disappointing holiday week for Torry as they notch up six without a win T

orry went into this last home match of 2016 safe in the knowledge that the much published 3 points they were deducted following the Almoradi match, have now been officially returned. But, having had one early xmas present already, they desperately now need some more, in the form of division 3 victories!

Although the midweek defeat at Crevillente failed to achieve that, goals by Calzado and Lewis gave the travelling fans something to cheer about in this local derby.

Nevertheless, following the return of the deducted points, before start of play on Sunday, Pedreño’s men sat just outside the relegation zone in 17th place on 16 points, whilst opponents Paterna featured just 2 places and 4 points ahead of them.

But the reality of the situation was that we were watching two poor sides albeit that the visitors sat slightly higher in the table than their hosts. The fact was clearly demonstrated in the opening twenty minutes with neither outfit showing any real flare as a stalemate in midfield cancelled out hopes of any excitement.

Starting only his 3rd game for Torry, Pecha was pulled off with injury at half time.

There was a near miss for the Salinero’s when Robles and Buza went sliding in to a goalmouth cross followed by a spectacular overhead kick from Lewis, which sailed narrowly over the bar, but it was fully 28 minutes before we saw the first real effort on goal.

Unfortunately it came from the head of Paterna’s Duco who found himself completely unmarked at a corner. Buba had no chance in the Torry goal.

Moments the keeper’s woes got decidedly worse when he collided into Torry’s new Slovakian defender Pecha. Things didn’t look good for Buba as he crashed to the ground but after treatment, although still appearing slightly dazed, the Equatoguinean, convinced the manager that he was fit to carry on.

As the half drifted into it’s closing stages, Calzado almost pulled the goal back just prior to the interval, but a superb fingertip save from Xenxo denied the defender his first Torry goal.

The second period brought a much better display from the home side as they went in search of goals, but despite creating a number of first class opportunities ‘the force’ was simply not with them

But this really was heartwarming stuff from the Salinero’s and they will feel gutted that they got nothing from the game, now realising just 2 points from the last 18, a return that has them staring relegation in the mouth.

Almost 20 years as the manager of Horadada saw himself extract his team from similar positions on many previous occasions and I have no doubt that he will most certainly do it once again.

There were chances also for Buza who had an effort deflected wide before seeing another point blank save turned onto the post by the Paterna keeper, which he just managed to get his fingertips to.

Next weekend another long trip to Castellon where Torry meet CF Borriol in the final game of the first half of the season, a half they will be hoping they can finish with a win against a team that currently sit just one place above them.

Second Half Recovery Rewards Elche Veteran Nino celebrates his equaliser

wo goals in two minutes rescued what, hitherto, had been a poor Elche performance against opponents who, for long periods, just looked sharper all over the pitch. A couple of near identical comedy moments in their own penalty area gifted Getafe a thoroughly deserved two nil lead with barely anything Elche attempted coming off. But quite what coach Alberto Toril told his team in the sanctuary of the dressing room at half-time we'll never know but it certainly had the desired effect.

To say Elche were altogether better on the restart would be to understate things a tad, as twenty min-

utes in, Guillermo - whose ability, or lack of, seems to polarise opinion at the Martínez Valero – made the breakthrough. A static Getafe back four left him with time and space with which to make no mistake from point-blank range. Game on !

Two minutes later Elche were on terms and, on the balance of play, rightly so. 36-year-old Nino, who arrived last summer, isn't the tallest centre-forward in the league but rose well to nod in a right wing Luis Pérez cross to level things up.

In the end it was honours even and the less than seven thousand people present left the ground for the last time this year reasonably happy.
