FIRST TORREVIEJA MEMORY WALK

orld Alzheimers Day was widely commemorated across the Vega Baja on Thursday with a series of activities organised across the region.

After months of planning the day finally arrived for the very first Torrevieja Memory Walk. The walkers turned up at the fountains for a photo call & were given an Alzheimers balloon to carry.

At 10.30 the group set off, turning heads as the walkers passed. With Jayne Leggatt wearing fancy dress & with collection box in hand they proceeded to pester for donations on the way.

They had a great morning and everyone managed to complete the walk & return to the start point for a well

W

earned drink. The slowest in the group only took 90 minutes to walk the 6 kilometres.

The collection box netted 66.35€ and with the sponsorship received so far our running total is 1488.35€ (Over £1000). This from only 12 walkers & I can’t thank them enough for supporting the Memory Walk to raise funds for Alzheimers research.

Meanwhile the Alzheimers centre in Cox also opened its doors with a program of activities including a talk on patient care.

The regional centre currently serves 45 patients in the Vega Baja from across fourteen municipalities. It also has an ever increasing waiting list of sufferers which it is presently unable to help.

Working with relatives and patients of this terrible disease the local association celebrated a day of living in the AFA centre, with guests taking part in a balloon release, in addition to free paella thanks to the collaboration of local restaurants.

Centre President, Ramon Marhuenda, complained that "the Department of Health continues to give us the same subsidy as when we had just fifteen patients, so we have to cover the additional expenditure with different activities such as raffles and other help we can get from local supporters.

There were also several presentations by staff from both Torrevieja and the Quironsalud Hospitals and at the University Hospital in Torrevieja staff there placed a ‘Mailbox of Memories’ in the main lobby with which they were hoping to raise awareness amongst members of the public.

“But in the Vega Baja the situation is gradually worsening” he said, where it is estimated that a there are a thousand diagnosed sufferers of the disease. He continued "there is still a taboo about having a family member with Alzheimer's. People seem ashamed to seek treatment."

Renes's cafe in Nouvion is the imaginary set for the forthcoming production from “ The Deadwood Stage Company” The characters from the well loved comedy series are trying their hands at perfoming an English pantomime, about which they know nothing.

Rene has been instructed in the new story of “Allo, Allo” to provide some entertainment for the Germans in his village, so he tries to direct his staff and customers in a version of “Cinderella” Mayhem ensues with Edith,Yvette and Mimi heading the cast in rehearsal.

The Resistance worker Michelle contributes with Crabtree the Policeman and Mama disrupts the situation carrying her chamber pot. Other well known characters are seen to be helping (or not).

Another 1,000 Euros For Care Home This month's charity fund-raising night at the Restaurant was another great success.

Red Strokes provided the entertainment, and had the dance floor full from the start. They were also dancing between the tables and outside! Red is one of the most entertaining and versatile artists around, and he certainly knows how to read his audience.

Once again, patrons dug deep in their pockets, and helped raise 1,005 euros for The Children's Care Home in Elche. The money will be used to buy school books and also hair and grooming equipment for the young people.

Wednesday, 19th October will see the return of Woody & The Peckers, who will be helping to raise funds for Torrevieja Stroke Support. Tickets available from the usual outlets.

On Tuesday, 13th September twenty six members of The Royal Naval Association, Torrevieja Branch enjoyed a very tasty lunch at Restaurante Dona Isabel in San Miguel.

Diego and his staff did us proud and after much eating and quaffing we bade our farewells and if anyone was a little unsteady, well the ship must have been rolling – just a bit!

Military Emergency Unit deploys over 500 troops to Vega Baja

S

pain’s Military Emergency Unit (UME) has been carrying out a number of simulated training exercises in the Vega Baja over recent days including water rescue operations in La Pedrera, night-time mountain rescues from the slopes of the Sierra de Callosa and canine search and rescue operations from the ruins of an abandoned factory unit in Redovån.

Approximately 500 troops and over 150 vehicles were involved in the training exercises, all from the 3rd Battalion of Emergency Intervention Unit (BIEM III) based in Valencia. The exercises got underway last Monday lasting 5 days through to Friday.

The scenario being practised by the troops all related to severe flooding and the catastrophic situation seen in area during 1987 when the Rio Seguro burst its banks in several places flooding several towns in the region, including Orihuela city, and necessitating hundreds of rescues by both boat and by helicopter.

Subsequent rescue operations could be likely in the event of such an emergency, so it is necessary to practise the troops on the ground as well as the command and control elements that would be necessary in pulling together the activities of such a dedicated units.

Many of the specialist troops were deployed simultaneously on different tasks including the pumping out of flooded properties and buildings, water searches and rescues as well as the mountain and building rescues previously mentioned.

BIEM III was joined in the week long exercise by the emergency helicopter battalion, Bheleme II, and Regimental Emergency Intervention Unit, Raiem, which is based in Torrejon de Ardoz.

A spokesman from the Military Emergency Unit said that the purpose of this simulation exercise "is to improve the level of education and the level of training of all the agencies involved in emergency management." Moreover these practices on the ground are developed to help strengthen ties of cooperation and understanding between all of the bodies involved so that when facing a risk the situation is handled fluently and efficiently, fully maximising the skills of the specialists on the ground.

Also involved in the operation was the Emergency Response Directorate General of Forest Fire Prevention, the Spanish Red Cross, SAMU, Alicante Fire Consortium, fire personnel from the City of Valencia and staff from the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura, as well as representatives of the Civil Guard, the National Police the Naval Diving Centre, together with the Civil Protection and local police from the municipalities affected.

DEATH KNELL TOLLS Small increase to price FOR PASCUAL FLORES of gas bottles A new price came into force on Tuesday to the maximum price of gas cylinder 11.72 euros, including taxes.

The price, which represents a slight increase of 0.45 euros per bottle, will be held for a period of two months.

Bottle prices reached a national high of 17.50 in March 2015 since when they have been reduced by 33% to their present level.

This new price will be held until the third Tuesday of November, when it will be reviewed again in accordance with international prices of raw materials in international markets, freight and any variation in the exchange rate.

A

spokesman for the Partido Popular said last week that the municipally owned schooner, Pascual Flores, which has been moored as a floating museum in Torrevieja Marina since the end of the last decade, could be closed up by the Harbourmaster if the authorities fail to renew its certificate of seaworthiness, which they say has expired.

The government team subsequently failed to comment and although the Pascual Flores is "clearly secured in the harbour" members of the public are not allowed on board.

The PP councilor, Eduardo Gil, said that la Sindicatura de Agravios, the local Ombudsman, has called on the City Council for a report on the current state of the ship with particular regard to its necessary certificates of seaworthiness and navigation.

The Pascual Flores is a historic 3-masted schooner, a onetime star of the TV series ‘The Onedin Line.

She was the last sailing ship built on the beach in Torrevieja during the early part of the last century.

After her trading career finished she was British owned and based at Dartmouth and then Bristol.

The ship was rescued in Milford Haven and brought back to her home port of Torrevieja on a heavy lift ship where, in 2008, she was restored at a cost, in the region, of 4 million euros.

She was completely overhauled in the North African port of Algeciras just last year at a further cost of 18,000 euros following which the director of the Nao Victoria Foundation said that the Pascual Flores was in good condition and remained a great attraction for Mediterranean sailors. He said that it was the intention of the Foundation to show it off worldwide.

However many government councillors feel that after spending in excess of 5 million euros over the last 25 years on what is little more than a ‘white elephant’ it will be totally irresponsible to continue with such funding.

New Medical Centre for Campoverde T

he municipal offices of Pinar de Campoverde hosted a meeting of residents on Monday at which plans were unveiled by the mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, Ignacio Ramos, for a new medical centre in the town to replace the small outdated doctors surgery that currently services the medical needs of the town’s 3000 residents.

Mayor Ramos told the gathering “the time has now come to build a new health centre in Pinar de Campoverde that can be better adapted to meet today's needs."

" The municipal architect, Sonia Rosique explained that "from the outset I have worked to develop the initiative of the government team and residents

Ciudadanos Budget Debate calls for Municipal Housing One of the results to come out of the public debate held last week by the Ciudadanos Councillors, Victor Ferrandez and Jose Hurtado, was the demand from Torrevieja residents for a stock of social housing.

The proposal attracted a greater number of votes (45) at the open meeting that debated the party budget for 2017.

The major budgetary proposals that were put to the public resulted in the housing scheme topping the list followed by the construction of a youth leisure centre (35 votes), creating a home non-profit and welfare association ( 33) implementation of a public day care centre for 0-3 years (33), increased bicycle lanes and bicycle rental service in the city (11) and improvements in La Siesta-El Chaparral (2).

The meeting also report on a further four main issues that have been raised by residents during the process and for which there is expected an increase of up to 8 million additional euros allocated in the 2017 City Budget, which focuses on urban resources. They include waste collection, street cleaning and beaches; Street lighting; improving roads and pavements; and maintenance of parks and gardens.

Orihuela announce refurbishment of city Bullring Cambiemos have been up in arms for some time because of the Orihuela council’s plan to demolish the 100 year old bullring. The Council had submitted a modification to the General Plan which would have meant the remains of the town’s abandoned bullring, once an attractive building situated at the entrance to the city, having its protection order removed and demolished.

Party spokesperson Marta Guillen said that it was inconsistent that a government working to secure the city of Orihuela as a World Heritage Site should be tearing down such iconic buildings.

The bullring, which was purchased by the city council ten years ago for the sum of 758,000 euros, was bought with the sole purpose of its future refurbishment. At that time the town council was keen to

see the premises converted into an outdoor theatre, capable of offering large scale cultural events and public gatherings during the warm weather months.

And now it seems as though there has been a change of heart with the revival of the decade old proposals to convert the Plaza de Toros to a multipurpose space, as the mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, and Councillor for Town Planning, Begoña Cuartero, presented a refurbishment project for the Bullring to the media last Friday.

The mayor said that the city council will convert the Plaza de Toros into an outdoor space featuring landscaped green areas and lighting to house concerts, shows, exhibitions and all sorts of other cultural activities that can be enjoyed by visitors and residents of

Orihuela.

The new project, designed by architect Rafael-elected, will cost 403,564 euros, with the works taking approximately six to seven months. The proposal will also include additional elements such as public toilets, a cafe and space for an exhibition hall.

Cuartero insisted that any improvements must be in keeping with the derelict building’s status as a site of Historical Heritage, however, and must first be ratified by the Platform for Heritage Foundation, as all decisions are very important and many will be irreversible.

So, after many years of inaction, during which time successive city administrations have failed to provide any maintenance, allowing the building to fall into its present derelict state, it now seems that the present council have finally recognised that this iconic structure is an important part of the historical constitution of the city.

Benejúzar Mayor calls back CHS The Benejúzar mayor, Antonio Bernabé, has said that he is very unhappy with the work carried out by the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS) on the Rio Segura and that there is still a large accumulation of reeds filling the river banks as it passes through the town. He also highlighted "the problems caused by the accumulation of sludge in the river base, caused by a lack of maintenance by the Confederation.

As such the mayor has demanded that CHS staff return to the town and properly clear and clean the river channels of the Segura River in the town in anticipation of the heavy rains that are expected to arrive during the coming weeks.

He said that as long as the riverbed and ramblas remain in their present state there is an increased the risk of flooding.

Currently they

are full of vegetation, reeds and rushes which prevent the passage of water and will thereby cause obstructions during periods of heavy rainfall.

Second expedition to wreckage of Las Mercedes

I

n a specially arranged visit to Jávea following the recent forest fires, British Consul SarahJane Morris thanked authorities and local services for their handling of the situation and urged British nationals to always follow the instructions of the local authorities in an emergency situation.

With almost one fifth of local residents British, Jávea ranks in the top ten towns in Alicante for British residents. Many British nationals were among the 1,400 people evacuated during the forest fires; 300 of whom were accommodated in a local school during the blaze. British Honorary Consul, Mark Petrie, visited those affected as the situation unfolded and saw, first hand, the fantastic job that the local authorities and Red Cross were doing to help and support those who had been evacuated.

As part of the visit, Sarah-Jane Morris, accompanied by new Consular Regional Director Gerard McGurk, met with the fire fighters from Balcón del Mar to thank them for their help. British vol-

unteers numbered within the ranks of those tackling the fires, and Balcón del Mar commandant Alan Lawton was present to meet the Consul. The fire fighters asked the Consulate to support them in ensuring that British nationals know how to stay safe in a fire and to trust the local authorities.

The British officials also greeted Doris Courcelles, the councillor for EU residents in Jávea, who worked continuously through the disaster to provide support to those affected.

Sarah-Jane Morris said: “We are very thankful for all of the support provided to the large number of British nationals who were in the area during the blaze. It is clear from what I have seen today that the whole community pulled together to help those who were evacuated and whose houses have been damaged. I can also see that if it were not for the quick action from local authorities and volunteers, the result could have been far more devastating. I hope no one has to go through this kind of situation again but if you do, it is essential to follow the instructions from the local police and fire fighters – it could save your life.”

The second scientific expedition to the wreckage of the vessel 'Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes' (Our Lady of Mercy) began last week out of the port of Cartagena, organised by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport, in collaboration with the Spanish Oceanographic Institute and the Spanish Navy. ?The initial goals of the project includes documenting the current state of the remains of the wreckage and the state of the entire archaeological wreckage site; suitably positioning all the remains where they are located; cleaning those parts of the wreckage that are of great scientific interest in order to increase knowledge and documenting, as far as possible, the operations that may have been carried out when the company Odyssey plundered the remains, distinguishing this from the phenomenon of the sinking of the frigate in 1804, among others.

In order to carry out these tasks, the vessel 'Ángeles Alvariño' set sail with a team of 13 people

comprising of scientists and technicians, headed up by the Director of the ARQUA Underwater Archaeology National Museum, Iván Negueruela, including personnel from the museum, from the Spanish Oceanographic Museum, the Naval Museum of the Spanish Navy, experts in handling remote robotic submarines - known as ROVs (Remote Operated Vehicles), and a film crew who will produce a documentary to spread knowledge of the research activities.

The campaign will last approximately a fortnight depending on the climatic conditions of the sea.

It should be pointed out that the overriding goal of the expedition is to raise awareness of the importance of caring for our underwater heritage within the framework of the 2001 UNESCO Convention.

The Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes was a Spanish Navy frigate which was sunk by the

British off the south coast of Portugal on 5 October 1804 during the Battle of Cape Santa Maria. The Spanish frigate was part of a small flotilla sailing from Montevideo to Cadiz, transporting silver, gold, vicuna, cinnamon and quinoa. The other ships in the flotilla were the Medea, Santa Clara and Fama.

A single shot from the HMS Amphion, commanded by Samuel Sutton, hit the ship's magazine causing an explosion that sank the ship. 250 crewmen were lost, and 51 survivors were rescued from the sea.

ollowing on from the success they enjoyed at the National Championships in May, Línea Directa´ are continuing with their support of Lawn Bowls by sponsoring the 2016 Valencian Championship, which got underway with the opening ceremony at San Miguel Bowls Club on Saturday.

Held over two weeks at three different venues, San Miguel, La Siesta and San Luis Bowls Clubs, the tournament was opened in a blaze of colour as almost 300 bowlers from across the Costa Blanca took to the San Miguel rink behind their individual club banners.

The undoubted sporting and social highlight of the Valencian bowling calendar was once again blessed with bright sunshine as the competitors streamed out onto the magnificent green, as ever resplendent in their club colours.

Vic Slater, the owner of Casa Ventura, handed over the 3 greens to the Championship Committee after which we had the usual round of welcoming speeches, followed by the Spanish National Anthem.

In welcoming the guests, players and dignitaries, the National Director and Valencian Delegate, Bob Donnelly, said that he was delighted to see such a large turnout as he then went on to thank Línea Directa´ for their generous contribution to the sport. He also thanked the owners of the three contributing clubs for the use of their venues before wishing the players the best of competition during the two-week tournament as well as the tournament umpires and markers who were all contributing their time absolutely free.

Neil Reardon, representing Línea Directa´, said that company have always strived to commit the very best attention to their English speaking clients who are a key

part of the business and its success. He said that the Director, Francisco Valencia, asked that he could wish the best of luck to all participants in the tournament and thank them for their continued confidence in Línea Directa´.

The competition itself got underway on Sunday at all three venues with the men’s and ladies singles competition. In the men’s section the defending champion is Drew Gerrard who has since moved from San Miguel to the Emerald Isle Bowls Club, Drew got his tournament underway with a preliminary round match against Quesada veteran Harry Rhodes.

In the ladies competition 2015 winner Sue Kemp of Monte Mar gets her tournament underway on Monday in a first round meeting with Jenny Bowman of Vistabella.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

Back to School It is that time of the year again. It is a time when the streets, playgrounds, shopping centres and cafe bars on the island fall silent (well, almost!), and once again it is possible to obtain some kind of service from the Town Hall, banks and offices as staff, somewhat grudgingly, return to work after nearly two months of disruption.

The children are safely back in school and everyday life returns more or less to normal, until interrupted by the occasional fiesta and the next major holiday season. School holidays in Spain seem to go on for ever, and by the time that September comes, many parents have reverted from the often heard delusionary comment that "It will be good to spend some time with the kids again", to "Thank goodness, they are back in school". Most parents are hugely relieved, and I know that many children are happy to have routine and structure back in their lives again too.

As with all teachers, my year used to begin in September, with planning and preparation playing a large part of the long summer holidays that teachers and the education system are often criticised for. It was always a time to recover, both physically and mentally, from the rigours of the previous academic year, but it was also a time when colds and flu set in for a week or two. It was if the body knew that it could now take a break, since school was closed, which allowed all manner of disease to take hold and annoyingly interfere with holiday plans. In June this year, I recall seeing a Canarian neighbour and teacher, returning wearily from school during those last frantic days of

the summer term, laden with a heavy bags of books, boxes and carrier bags. The weary smile and the sigh said it all, and I remember that feeling of exhaustion only too well.

I enjoyed teaching, and if I had my time over again I would choose exactly the same career.

I recall starting each term with 35 or so anxious faces in their new classroom, dressed in new or freshly laundered uniforms, looking at me and wondering how it would all turn out. In turn, I recall thinking how small and unsure they all looked, and doubting that they would ever turn out as good a class as I had taught the previous year. I was always wrong, and when the end of term came the following July, I remember how much I missed them; all the individual personalities and potential, and the discoveries and learning that we had all achieved together. These were special and exhilarating times; exhausting, but nevertheless very special.

A few days ago, a friend asked me if I missed going back to school in September. My response was "Certainly not!" However, when I take time to reflect, I guess I do miss the routine of setting up a new classroom, the smell of fresh polish on the floors, repainted classroom walls and maybe new carpeting or a new piece of equipment if the budget allowed. I miss the fresh displays on classroom walls designed to welcome, entertain and intrigue new and anxious pupils, filling in a new class register, trying to remember new names, identifying the personalities that would challenge, entertain and infuriate me in the weeks and months ahead. I miss welcoming new colleagues and reassuring anxious parents.

I then have a reality check, and remember endless, and often pointless meetings, with school governors and parent teacher associations who would often take hours reaching a decision that my staff and I could usually make in minutes. I also recall helpful, supportive governors and parents who did their best for their school and the local community.

So, at the beginning of this new academic year, I wish all our youngsters and their teachers well. Learn well together, and make the most of your potential. As for me, I have many happy memories, but relieved that I am no longer part of it.

Carp R Us Club News The 3rd Round of the Autumn Series was fished on September 22nd on the River Segura Eden Canal section. Now that some of the heat has gone, and the sun is lower in the sky, some of the pegs are more sheltered than others. Eleven out of 12 anglers caught, but once again there were many blue crabs in the river.

Winner on the day was Roy Buttress with 3.52kg. Second was Andy Foden with 3.32kg, third Jeremy Fardoe with3.02kg and in fourth place Steve Collins with 2.20kg

So it will be fished on the Embalse de Pedrera, which at the moment is 31.8% full and still going down. Pegs will be at 8.00 am but please try to be at the top at 7.30am. Fishing is from 9.00 till 2.00.

Season continues with Great Sailing at SAAM

F

or the second race day of the SAMM Autumn season, the wind blew steadily from the east south east making it a really great day to sail.

Eleven thirty saw the larger boats jostling at the start line. ‘Sirocco’ made a perfect start, closely followed by ‘Connie’. ‘Mistral’ was away from the line and, in haste, made some hurried tacks and five minutes passed before they managed to clear the line as the dinghies approached, all abreast for their very impressive start.

‘Dos’ soon caught Mistral, quickly followed by the Laser Radial, then ‘Uno’. ‘Quarto’ had made the worst start but good crewing soon put things right.

Connie, being a much heavier boat, needed more wind and was slowly being caught, while Sirocco was forging by steering a really economical course without errors. The race continued for 4 laps, each boat trying to catch and overtake the others, and was a pleasure to watch from the high vantage of a ferry boat kindly made available to SAMM by Angel and his family.

The final result on corrected times were 1st Sirocco, 2nd Quarto and 3rd Conny.

The second race was interesting because the course was reversed and helms had to be aware of the submerged breakwater on their port side and choose on which tack to start.

Connie made an excellent start on a port tack which took them away from the start line and the breakwater. Sirocco and Mistral chose starboard knowing they would have to make an early tack to avoid the breakwater. Five minutes later the dinghies fought for start position and Quarto, who had picked a really good line, was blocked by Uno who suddenly switched from port to starboard giving her the right of way. Connie seemed to have taken the best line and rounded the first mark ahead of a closing Sirocco.

Six laps of really good sailing followed with the wind strengthening all the time. In the second lap, Sirocco in the lead lost the plot and missed out a mark, which cost a lot of time going back down the course to correct the mistake. Quarto seized the opportunity and took the lead. Close on its tail was Dos who took its turn at the front shortly after. Some excellent sailing saw the Radial, which seemed on the point of capsizing at the jibe mark several times, recover. Sirocco made amends for her error and sailed tighter to the wind than most saving a tack to the windward mark and visibly started to haul back the deficit. A great day with great sailing by all.

Provincial grant enables Torrevieja to castrate over 200 stray cats

A

campaign got underway in Torrevieja last Monday to castrate over 200 street cats. Run by the voluntary CES Project (Catch, Neuter, Release), the action will be financed by a grant from the Alicante Provincial Council of almost 15,000 euros.

The Councillor for Animal Protection, Carmen Morate, said that the animals will be taken to seven Torrevieja clinics which have been approved by the College of Veterinarians of Alicante where they will each be castrated at a cost of 70 euro for females and 35 euros for males The project coordinator, Ana Llopis, has been handed a list of about 70 colonies registered in Torrevieja, by the City Council, with the approximate number of cats and the locations in which they can be found.

So far this year the group have already castrated almost three hundred cats along the coast from the Acequión to the Playa de los Locos. This next campaign will focus on the colonies, and in the areas, where there is thought to be conflict or where the residents have become particularly concerned with the number of stray and abandoned cats they are seeing.

Drowning on La Zenia Beach A 60 year old German died on Monday after getting into difficulty whilst swimming off La Zenia Beach. The incident occurred just after 9am, an hour before the lifeguards arrived to take up their duties.

The body was pulled out of the water by a maritime rescue crew after which the body was taken to Alicante where an autopsy is being carried out to determine the cause of death.

Until the death on Monday this had been a holiday season with only one previous major incident on the Orihuela coastline, the drowning of a 57 year old British woman who, despite the red flags, died whilst swimming at La Glea beach in Campoamor in late June.

The EUR 14,494.87 received by the council, is part of a total grant of 250,000 euros. Other municipalities like Elche, with 24,000 euros, and Alicante, with 45,000 euros, have also been beneficiaries of the scheme.

Orihuela celebrate World Tourism Day Two dramatised theatrical tours of Orihuela took place on Saturday evening to celebrate World Tourism Day. The Councillor for Tourism, Sofia Alvarez, said "We want oriolanos to become tourists in their own city and actively participate so that they can to know every corner of Orihuela."

Each of the walks consisted of a tour around the historic city centre during which suitably attired actors and guides briefed visitors about the history of Orihuela. “This is one of the activities that is most enjoyed by tourists because it is a dynamic and fun way to discover the history of the city through a dramatized explanation by iconic characters," said the councillor for Tourism.

Such tours are arranged on a regular basis by the councillor with each proving more popular than the previous.

Closer to home, at the Civic Centre Alameda del Mar, there will be a live Flamenco show getting underway at 7pm on Tuesday evening. That too is free to anyone wishing to attend.

QUESADA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE - SUMMER COMPETITION For the day’s organisers it was a very early start arriving at the course just as the sun was coming through the dark. With so much to do before players came in to pay with the staff at Font del Llop eager to help out to make the day once again a special event we sorted out all the nearest the pins, longest drives and the cards to go with it. This year we were pleased to welcome players from 10 different societies. This extended to 52 players starting on the 1st and 10th tees. By this time the sun was fully out and making its presence felt. We were now all set for an excellent day. The course was in its usual well maintained condition and it was obvious to the organisers who were in amongst the rest of the players that we were looking at some excellent scores and as the cards started to come in this was realised. Having checked all the cards through once again the trophy for the best pair on the day was going to go to San Miguel Golf Society with Theo Boelhouer and Hugh Riley scoring a very creditable 49 points. Our thanks as always on these occa-

sions go to the Font del Llop staff and especially to Barbara for her help in making this a most successful day. BLARNEYSTONE Golf Society AT SAURINES For many of our members it was their first visit to Saurines, everyone enjoyed the course and had a good day. As usual we returned to the Blarneystone for refreshments (thank you Gill and Eamon) and the prize giving. It was a prize giving with a difference as for the four nearest the pin prizes on offer no one managed to land a ball on three of the greens, even the winner of the twos pot chipped in from off the green!! So well done to Ray Harvey for his first NTP win.

RUBYS Golf Society AT FONT DEL LLOP Our September Player of the year Trophy game took us to Font Del Llop and although fairly late summer the weather was fantastic for golf, as was the course.

24 players enjoyed a great day out and there were a few new faces which was nice to see.

The results were as follows, nearest the pin on the par 3's were Steve Bramhall, Theresa Wright, Dave Shelton, Rob Litton and Nigel Wright, nearest the pin in three was Roy Stanley. Best front nine El Stevo and best back Nigel Wright. The two's pot with a rollover was shared this week between Dave (I'm back) Shelton and Captain Theresa. The gold division was won by another returning face Tony Harrison with the silver and overall prize going to our Captain Theresa.

Back at Rayz Bar on El Raso the presentation took place whilst enjoying a lovely buffet provided by our hostess Carol, and the football card was won by our Vice captain Colin Fear.

Our next game is for the Bill Griggs trophy at Alicante on the 7th of October, any one wishing to join us for this game should add their name to the list in Rayz Bar.

Foulcer continues fine form in SABA Summer Knockout Finals By Arthur Brown

The Finals of the SABA Summer Knockout Competition were held for the last time at San Luis Bowls Club. Although a similar competition will probably be held next year with the amalgamation of the CBBA and the Valencian Federation committees, next year’s competition will come under the newly formed Levante Lawn Bowls.

This year’s competition although slightly down on previous years still had over 120 competitors and over 120 games were scheduled before the Semi Finals starting late March and finishing at the end of June to avoid the heat of July and August. The Semi’s started on Friday 16th September, in the morning we had the Mixed Pairs and Ladies Singles disciplines both Mixed Pairs games were very close Steve Cantley and Lynne Greenland led Barbara and Arthur Brown most of the way but after 17 ends led by just one shot they then took the last end to win 17 – 14. In the other Semi it was even closer Deidre Leeming and Derek Sale appeared to be heading for a win but dropped a hot shot to Terry Morgan and Carol Broomfield on

Johnston by 1 shot after 14 ends but Jacquie then clicked into top gear to win 21 – 12.

The afternoon saw the Men’s singles and Mixed Trips games being played. Spanish Nationals Champion Martin Foulcer took on San Luis Derek Cooper but despite home advantage Martin was just too strong for Derek and won 21 – 7. The other Semi was an all Emerald Isle affair with John Pooley playing club mate Pat Heaney and despite Pat pulling back to a 2 shot deficit after 20 ends John then took control to win 21 – 14. The Mixed Trips semi’s also featured a game with two sides from the same club, Quesada’s Mel and Colin Highland and Jacquie Johnston were up against Averil Toozer, Mark France and Phil Bevan, it was a bit of a see-saw game right up to the 11th end where Jacquie’s team were 1 shot up they then went on to win 18 – 12. The other Semi saw Dave Davies, Ann Marie Stevenson and Drew Gerrard against Tony French, Maggie Furness and Ian Kenyon here again this was close up to the 13th end with only 2 shots in it but a 6 on the 14th end to Drew’s team was crucial to give them a 19 – 15 victory.

Saturday morning hosted the Men’s and Ladies Pairs Semi’s, in the Ladies Semi Sandra Heath and Jacquie Johnston were just too strong for Maureen Foulcer and Beryl Regan winning 23 – 7, while the other Semi between Peta Rhodes and Carol Broomfield and Gail Willshire and Ann Eagle was another cliff hanger at 15 all after 18 ends Carol and Peter took the extra end to go through to the final.

The Men’s Semi’s followed the same pattern Bob Nesbitt and Peter Ross trailed Dave Field and Jim Oliver by 6 shots after 12 ends but slowly pulled it back to level at 13 all after 17 ends and a 4 on the last end gave Bob and Peter the victory. Tony French and Ian Kenyon were up against Dave Johnson and Derek Toozer, they led all of the way but were only 1 up after 16 ends but took the last two ends to win 16 – 13.

The Finals started on Saturday afternoon in the Mixed pairs Deidre Leeming and Derek Sale got off to good start leading 7 – 2 after 6 ends but Steve Cantley and Lynne Greenland slowly took control to run out 22 -12 winners. The other final was the Mixed Trips and

once again the spectators were treated to an epic battle, the game was close throughout Mel & Colin Highland and Jacquie Johnston went into the last end 2 shots up against Dave Davies, Ann Marie Stevenson and Drew Gerrard only to see Drew’s last wood convert a losing position to a 2 shot advantage forcing an extra end, where to reverse the situation Jacquie drew shot with her last wood to take the title.

The remaining finals were played on Sunday and once again in the Men’s and Ladies Pairs Finals everything went to the last both games finishing with an 18 – 17 score to the winners Sandra Heath and Jacquie Johnson beat Peta Rhodes and Carol Broomfield which was close all the way through but a late surge by Sandra and Jacquie took the title. Tony French and Ian Kenyon looked comfortable at 17 – 11 after 13 ends but just managed to hold on to a 1 shot lead despite losing the last 3 ends to Bob Nesbitt and Peter Ross.

The final two games were the Men’s and Ladies Singles Martin Foulcer looked to be heading for a comfortable win at 19 -7 but had to wait a few ends before winning 21 -13 against John Pooley. The Ladies Final was similar and despite a small early lead to Maureen Kidd, once Jacquie Johnston found her rhythm the result was never in doubt Jacquie winning 21 – 7.

San Miguel Bowls Club San Miguel team of Pat McEwan, Linda and Cliff Plaisted and skip Dave McEwan, reached the final of the 4 day Gran Alacant Rinks this week. It proved to be a nail biting final with San Miguel going into the last end 2 down.

They were holding 2, and it looked like an extra end was in the offing, when the opposition took the jack and they went 1 down. A brilliant final, well done.

San Miguel ladies played away against Emerald Isle Ladies for the Annual Friendship Trophy. A great friendly game with San Miguel retaining the trophy. Return match next year at San Miguel!!

Dream Team unveiled as Torry pick up the pace CD Torrevieja ................... 1 CD Novelda ...................... 1

W

ith the dismissal of team coach Gabriel Correa following last week’s home defeat at the hands of Rayo Ibense Torry went into yesterday evening’s fixture against local rivals Novelda both managerless and pointless having scored just 3 goals in their six Tercera starts.

But the conflict doesn’t stop there with statements issued to the golsmedia website by Torry players indicating during the week that there was still a massive divide between the board and the players which seemed likely to continue until a new man could be brought in to steady the ship.

And we were all thinking seven days on that we were in for an interesting evening with the likelihood that senior players would be responsible for coaching and team selection, so to be hit with the presence of the popular Pedreño and, for many years, his right hand lieutenant, Carrasco, just about everyone was thrown, apart perhaps from the Torry inner circle.

Quite when the appointments were made is just about anyone’s guess as the Board of Directors seem totally oblivious of the need to update the supporters and the press. I think it is fair to say that we were all caught completely unawares.

And with the starting lineup also featuring quite a number of players who seem to have arrived on the back of the same news blackout during the week even the regular supporters were confused as the home team took to the field.

With Correa’s financial settlement still pending neither of the new management team were able to take their place on the bench but the influence of Pedreño was clearly there to be seen right from the opening play.

The players were altogether more committed, during long periods of Torry possession the ball was being moved across the park and everyone wanted to be involved.

So it was a brighter than expected start from the home team with a golden opportunity in the opening seconds by Navas from an accurate Llorens cross. From just four yards out the winger headed over an empty goal.

Lewis was next to provide, following a decent run down the left flank. The unmarked Matheus was only inches wide with his shot, but to everyone’s delight, just four minutes later, the same combination made amends as an effort from Matheus crept inside the right hand post.

With the Torry defence working well to snuff out any Novelda threat the visitors were kept to shots from distance. It allowed new Guinea keeper Buba to have a relatively quiet introduction to his new club with only one real intervention necessary, toward the end of the first half.

Unfortunately the situation changed rather quickly as the second period got underway with the keeper needing to pull off two excellent saves in the

Torry captain Pastor with Alberto of Novelda and the three officials opening minutes as Novelda took the game to their hosts. Their intensity continued and now it was the turn of the visitors to dictate the pace of the game.

Torry were still pushing forward when they could but their opportunities were limited as Segarra and Neme dominated midfield.

The visitors were getting closer so it came as no surprise when Jordi pulled them level with a neat flick with less than ten minutes to go. And as the pressure continued the home side were doing all they could to keep them at bay.

With Torry looking to settle for a point, their first of the season following the Almoradi appeal, they

looked reasonably at ease as the game drifted toward the final whistle. Indeed they were denied a nailed on penalty as Lewis was bundled over in the box late on. The referee took the easy option by blowing for full time.

So after promising so much in the first period, a win it was not, but a very good performance it was and with with Pedreño and Carrasco now able to have a week with the team it’s a better than expected start.

Might we now be hoping for more with next week trip north where Torry meet 3rd placed Ontinyent next Sunday kicking off at 6pm..

CHAOS has emerged within the Second Regional Group 16 in Valencia - just a week into the 2016-17 season - with THREE of the 15 teams withdrawing from the league, throwing fixtures into turmoil!
