Minister Considers Rail Proposals he mayor of Torrevieja, Jose Manuel Dolon, said on Monday that he has now received a response from the Minister of Public Works, Inigo de la Serna, on the proposal to run a train line, once again, into Torrevieja.

The minister has said that he will look again at the three proposals raised by his ministry during the previous term of office as well as the scheme submitted by Torrevieja’s municipal surveyors.

He confirmed that he will maintain a dialogue with the city planners all the time that the different proposals regarding it’s historic claim are being studied.

Despite the Minister’s communication Mayor Dolon said that he was disappointed by the delays that are taking place in the delivery of the study that according to the estab-

lished deadlines should have been concluded last April.

De la Serna said that the main criteria in studying the scheme, 'the Tren de la Costa' will be that of profitability and the cost of taking the line into the city centre will be too much.

As such, the solution could be to site the station in either Rojales or Los Montesinos,

taking advantage of the previous route of the train.

Dolon said that he had spoken directly to the mayors of both municipalities who had shown their agreement to the propos-

al, albeit that he favoured the location of the new Torrevieja station to be adjacent to the highway CV-95, very close to the roundabout turnoff to Los Montesinos.

Torrevieja had a railway line that was introduced to the city in 1884. It finally disappeared, along with its station, in the late 1970’s coinciding with the decline of the salt mining industry. The line came into the old train station which was build in the late 19th century, along the 7km track now occupied by the ‘Via Verde’ (the Green Road) that starts at the edge of Los Montesinos.

But it is now felt that as a result of the thousands of national and international tourists that come into the area every year plus the high volume of foreign residents living in the city, that Torrevieja

would benefit once more from being linked by rail to other destinations.

At present, the airport is over 50km distant, the bus system is limited and the railway system nonexistent, so any improvement to the transport network would be a major boost for both Torrevieja and also for the surrounding region.

Just last year Los Verdes collected more than 12,000 signatures in favour of the reinstatement of a rail line that it said would greatly benefit a large percentage of the population that does not have the use of private vehicles.

‘Poppy Tastic’ as local branches tally up RBL appeal

T

he local branches of the Royal British Legion, Torrevieja, the Orihuela Costa and La Marina/Gran Alacant in particular, have been busy raising funds for those ‘needy’ ex servicemen and their dependants since the beginning of the year. However their activities have increased dramatically in recent weeks as, together with branches across the world, they set out on their final fundraising ‘efforts’ of the year with the ‘Poppy Appeal’ here in District Spain (North).

This year the launch was carried out on 14 October in Benidorm by the city mayor, Snr Antonio Pérez Pérez, together with guests from the British Consulate as well as the Defence Attaché, Lt Col David Whimpenny, Chairman of the Legion Membership Council from London, regular attendees from the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, Arthur “Skippy” Teasdale and Wayne Campbell, looking marvellous in their scarlet coats, as well of course as many officials and members of The Royal British Legion and the public.

Since that time Gran Alacant/La Marina, Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa have distributed poppies and collection boxes to over 550 bars, restaurants and other locations throughout the region. In addition, the three branches mobilised their ‘armies’ of volunteers who have also been active at Alicante airport, all of the local markets, many supermarkets and shops, as well as dozens of other venues and collection outlets, and what an amazing amount of money has so far been raised.

In some branches a few of the poppy collection tins are still to be emptied and the monies counted, so the final figure for the District will not be released for some weeks, but we do know the totals for our three local branches, which have all concluded their collections and their counts.

Our northern most enclave in Gran Alacant/La Marina, despite being by far the smallest of the three, collected by far the highest amount per member, totalling almost 10,400 euro, an increase of 300 euro on 2015. Especial thanks to Iceland Supermarket.

In Torrevieja the total collected by Branch Members was euro 22,163.00, an increase of over euro 2.700 on the 2015 total. Again there must be special thanks to Iceland for allowing collectors to rattle tins in their store which raised 2800.00 Euros, and to the Crescendo International Choir which donated 2000.00 Euros to the appeal. This is a fantastic result reflecting all the hard work put into this year's appeal by the branch's Poppy People On the Orihuela Costa the effort was organised By Eddie Coleman, where they too had yet another bumper year, largely due to the golfing fraternity and the magnificent efforts of Mick ‘the Grip’ Reeves and Mike Gossage who, once again, ran a series of ‘Poppy Golf’ tournaments.

In total, there were 40 events, which included two charity days during a fantastically busy two-month period. With that alone raising over 10,000 euro it was clear that the Branch was going to exceed last year’s totals by quite some way.

Lisa Perry, the manager of Iceland in San Javier, was most welcoming to branch collectors once again, the efforts from whom raised over 3,700 euro, and there was a further 4,000 euro raised at Alicante Airport by Orihuela Costa members.

Together with the annual fun day, St Patrick and St George’s days, as well, of course as the book stalls and many other activities carried out during the year, the branch raised euro 40,786, an increase of over 5,000 euro on 2015.

There were of course many other fundraisers carried out by all three branches during the course of the year, lots of which relied on the efforts of dozens of local entertainers and bands. They too must also be thanked for their enthusiasm and hard work, but one organisation that has been particularly supportive and loyal has been The Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. They

seem to have featured at just about every single RBL event during the year with their efforts helping to achieve yet another magnificent total.

And testament to Gran Alacant & La Marina, Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa, is that all of their fundraising activities have been carried out extremely professionally, with the minimum of fuss and with the maximum of effort and support from both within and without the branches. An amazing achievement. Well done to everyone involved in achieving a grand total of over 73,000 euro.

Another 4 million euro to complete ‘La Paloma’

Despite having to find a further 4 million euros, over 56% of residents in Pilar de la Horadada want to see completion of the new cultural centre, “La Paloma”, built along the Av de la Constitution and almost next door to the Junior school Virgen del Pilar.

The figure was arrived at following a telephone survey of 3,721 households on 22 and 23 October with the results showing that 56.2% of the men surveyed want to see the work resumed, compared to 54.1% of women. The minority governing PSOE will now raise the matter at the next meeting of the town plenary at which they will hope to obtain council approval.

Building of the original centre, much of which still stands as a monument to the former council’s over spending, was abandoned over a decade ago when it was discovered that the initial budget of 2.4 million had increased to over 12 million euros. At that stage the council had already spent 6 million.

Christmas High Tea at Quirónsalud Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja organized an international meeting last week with collaborating medical centres and presidents of local international associations as well as members of the media.

More than a hundred people gathered to celebrate "I International Meeting Quirónsalud Christmas High Tea" at which medical specialists and directors gathered to learn of the latest hospital

advances and to celebrate the Christmas holidays.

Quirónsalud Managing Director, Francisco Fiestras, proposed a toast to the festive season as he thanked those who had placed their trust in the hospital. He highlighted "the importance of the quality of care and the service of that the hospital provided as well as the importance and benefits of treating patients in their own language.

Campoverde’s gift PINK LADIES SANTA WALK to the needy T

A presentation of cash to the tune of 1,223.44 euros was made to the To the Caritas Charity, on Wednesday 14th of December in Pilar de la Horadada.

It was presented to one of the local councillors, in the presence of the parish priest of Pilar Church, and a senior administrator of the Charity, also present were members of “the working party” on the night Jan, Alan, and Margaret, and other members of Charity.

The money was raised on a Country and Western Evening, performed at the Rusty Nail in Campoverde, by the fabulous entertainer, Brian Jenkins, who again appeared free of charge for the evening.

The event was arranged and organised by Mr Eddie Templeman, ably assisted by his wife Margaret, many thanks to Eddie and Margaret. Thanks also go to Barry, for printing the posters free of charge, and to all the assistants, Ann and Paul for the Tombola, Kevin & Debbie Dutton for auction items, Jan, Maggie and Margaret for raffle collections, and anyone we may have omitted to mention, thanks to all.

he Annual Santa Walk took place on Sunday 11th December.

After being postponed the week before, because of bad weather, it was still a great success.

This was our seventh Santa Walk and the third one from Zenia Boulevard.

We would like to thank Zenia Boulevard for hosting the event, Simon Morton and Dan Davy of Sunshine FM for providing the entertainment in the Boulevard and on the walk. To Trainer John for the loan of his pick-up truck which became Santa's sleigh for the day.

A big thank you to all of the walkers that took part and everyone that brought donations for Reach Out and Elche Childrens Home. To the local police for our escort and of course, all the Pink Ladies and Panthers.

Together a fantastic €1056.04 was raised on the day, in the beautiful sunshine!

Alternative Christmas Hospital Quirónsalud from Cantabile Toy Campaign

H

ospital Quirónsalud’s Christmas Charity project was brought to a close on Tuesday evening with a performance by the International Christian Assembly (ICA) church choir.

The campaign has been running for a little over two weeks during which time members of the public have kindly donated an inordinate amount of goods, mainly of toys and Christmas sweets that will go to the NGO

A packed and appreciative audience greeted Cantabile Choir's took on a Concert of Christmas Carols at La Siesta church on the 8th December with not a sight nor sound of Wenceslas, 'Jingle Bells' or 'Hark the Herald'.

Indeed new M.D. Valerie Beange's eclectic choice included numbers sung in Spanish and Swedish with the latter carol partly sung as a duet between a Danish and a Swedish member of the choir. Obviously, the pronunciation for this was much superior to the other verses sung by the choir. The concert was held in aid of church funds with free entrance but a bucket collection, which raised over 200 Euros, was held.

N332 takes Christmas to Cartagena

I

n many places around the world it´s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and now the social centre in Cartagena is no different, thanks to the generous donations and work of the team and one of the sponsors of the N332 Road Safety Project.

Al Andalus Car Hire and N332 joined together to provide the centre with a projector and screen along with a tripod for holding the projector, so that the children who study in the centre will have the opportunity of seeing the presentations made by their teachers without the necessity of asking to borrow a projector from the Town Hall, when it might not always have been available, and during the holidays, they have the added bonus of being able to enjoy films and entertainment on their very own big screen.

The Guardia Civil traffic department in Torrevieja has been a central point for receiving decorations, and many followers and supporters of the project delivered decorations to the police station, all of which were taken to the centre to add that extra special festive feel.

Once the centre was decorated and their minicinema set up,

the children then made a very special greeting card, thanking N332 and their followers for the donations, and also thanking The Courier newspaper who provided them with free tickets to visit the Terra Natura animal park during a day trip to Benidorm.

Francisco Morales from the Guardia Civil presented the children with the gifts and would like to extend their gratitude to everybody who got involved, making this Christmas that little extra special for those who deserve a treat.

Scooting round for Elche Children Last Saturday, 10th December, Paul Baxter from The Los Alcazares Scoots arranged a scooter rally to raise funds for the Elche Children's Care Home. Joined by our own volunteer accountant, Dave Diggle, they arrived at the Home to be met by the children who delighted in seeing and hearing about the Vespas and other vintage scooters. Paul presented Assistant Director Fernando with 200 euros worth of Decathlon vouchers from monies they had raised. We would also like to say thank you to Vince Blacker and his wife Lisa (from HomeTech UK Ltd.) - Vince joined the rally on Saturday and having met the children decided to make a donation to the home of 500 euros.

The group had a tour of the home and joined the kids for refreshments before setting off back to Los Alcazares where they were holding a night-time event at the Shamrock Lounge entertained by mod-band Paisley Express.

We would like to say a special thank you to Paul Baxter for taking the time and effort to organise this rally and raising a total of 700 euros for the children as a result of his hard work, and thanks to all the bikers who took the time come and support him including the santas from Cartagena Vespa Club.

A Glimmer of Hope for Expats in Europe

I

f you happen to be a determined Brexiter, it is probably better that you do not read this article, since it may lead you to choke on your cornflakes. For those who do value the European ideal and the opportunities that we have been given to live and work in the country of our choice, there is some news that may help to cheer us all up following the recent traumas of Brexit and Trump.

It is already clear that the decision to leave the EU has caused considerable distress and uncertainty for expats, and particularly for those of advanced years and poor health. I know of many who are planning to return to the UK, if their health and finances can stand it, others are claiming citizenship rights from their host countries, whilst others remain in a kind of limbo. Confusion, uncertainty and unnecessary stress is not good for any of us, but it may be that there is a glimmer of hope appearing on the horizon.

Charles Goerens, a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Group in the European Parliament representing Luxembourg, is calling for the establishment of European associate citizenship for those who wish to continue to be part of the European project, but are nationals of a former European state. Simply put, this associate status would give British expats continued rights, such as freedom of movement and the right to reside in member states of the European Union, as well as being able to stand and vote in European

elections. In return, associate citizens would pay an annual membership fee directly into the European budget. Those who apply for associate status of the EU would continue to retain their British passports and UK citizenship, which would mean that the status quo would continue, albeit for an annual membership fee.

Charles Goerens makes the point that 48 per cent of all British voters wished to remain as European citizens and should continue to have the right to do so. The EU should assist the process in providing a practical solution for UK citizens who are being stripped of their European identity. Treaty change at European level will be required, since current treaties specify that European citizenship stems directly from national citizenship of member states. European Union citizenship is currently additional to and does not replace national citizenship.

So, what happens next? Nothing substantial can happen until the UK triggers Article 50, which sets the divorce from the EU in motion.

Meanwhile, the European Parliament’s Constitutional Committee will vote on the amendments, which will be followed by a vote in the European Parliament as early as next year. Further development of the proposals can only take place during the negotiations that follow Article 50 when current treaties will be updated.

Some Brexiters are, of course, unhappy, with the ‘Get Britain Out’ campaign director complaining that the move will encourage further divisiveness between the British public at a time when unity is required. On the contrary, I think there is little for Brexiters to fear from a move that will offer further democratic choice, and help to protect the rights of those who wish to retain their European identity; one size does not fit all.

La Siesta Bowls Club by Rod Edgerton The annual Christmas Dinner Dance was held at Portico Mar restaurant with over 50 attending and a great night was had by all. This followed the final week of the Christmas Hamper being played. This is an internal competition played over 7 weeks with 8 teams of 4 players competing in triples each week. At the end of the competition all participants get a hamper and the better you finish in the League the bigger the hamper. The winners were Ron Sheldon, Johnnie Ryder, Viv Mahomet and Jean James. This year Opencar and Open Parking generously sponsored the event allowing some exceptional hampers to be provided.

The Apollos continue their great form at the top of the league with a 14points to nil win over San Luis Romulans by 151 shots to 80.Another great win for Irene Laverick, Ramsay Sinclair and Brian Gardiner 37- 10 leading from start to finish. Dave Davies, Norman Adcroft and George Richardson also won from start to finish by 29 shots to 14 Dawn and John Taylor and Harold, our reliable trio, won 21-10.

There were also wins for Barbara, Jack and Jean Cooper 24-12, Beryl Syring, Pat Reilly and John Ball 20-15 Sue, Vic Mahomet and Irene Mangan came back from 9-14 picking up 11 shots on the last 7 ends to win 20-19.

The Pioneers travelled to Vistabella Eagles and although winning the shots by 112 to 109 in a close match only came away with 6 points.

By Barry Latham I’m sure all would agree we had a good night at the Posh Club for our Christmas Get Together. Many thanks to Lorita Rae and her team for organising everything. Emerald Isle Neptunes came and destroyed the Pathfinders. He might be the god of the sea and earthquakes and it looked like he used both to produce a heart breaking 14-0 defeat on La Marina at home. As someone quoted “looked like a ship without a rudder.” Never mind you can drown your sorrows in the usual way. On the other hand, The Explorers went away and had a great 12-2 win against the very strong San Miguel Meteors. Mike Stone, Carol Smith and Ron Maiden; Maureen Kidd, Kathy Manning and Janet Parsons; Peter Parsons, Phil Pape and Margaret McLaughlin; Tom Spencer, Mike Smith and Anne Stone and Margaret Finlayson, Arthur Cronk and Garth Slater all won. I believe you know who didn’t bowl a wrong bias this week but got less than she hoped for in the Christmas Raffle. We won, we won a Winter League game and we are not bottom now. Also winners were Dave Hadaway, Jean Perchard, Ron Maiden and Steve Douglas followed by Shirley Hadaway, Phil Pape, Carol Smith and Anne Stone while Barry Latham, Mike Stone, Wendy Latham and Kathy Manning managed a draw. Christmas Pentathlon. The Christmas Pentathlon is tomorrow Tuesday 20th December, and is being held at Buscavidas, in Los Montesinos. Registrations by 20.00 hours please.

This year the Pentathlon will be in Fancy Dress. Please come dressed as Mrs Santa, Fairies, Snowballs, Angels, anything Christmassy – even Christmas jumpers! We are looking to have a fun evening. I still await names from El Balcon, but entries can be made on the night one per team as usual.

New Year Blind Triples. As you know, this is the “Jeannie Parrish Memorial Competition”, which will be held at Buscavidas Montesinos on Tuesday January 3rd 2017.

CARP R US CLUB NEWS This will be the very last Club news letter that I will write for you. As stated last week I have resigned along with my wife from the Club after 12years of membership and 10 years as the Clubs President, so we can now pursue our other interests.

I would like to thank all the readers that have hopefully got some pleasure and information from my articles. I started, 6 years ago ,writing about the pleasure of Angling and gave information on all the Embalses in Valencia—Murcia and Castilla La Mancha. As well as information on the Clubs results and social events.

So may I wish all the readers of the Leader a very Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

This weeks match was the annual Fur and Feather, and was held on the Eden canal stretch of the river Segura. It was light misty rain during the match.

The last match of the year will be held on the river Segura Murcia town- section pegs will be at 8.00am and fishing will be from 9.00 till 2.00pm.

I am pleased to say that the Murcian Federation have confirmed to me all our bookings for the year 2017- many thanks to them. I still await the confirmation of the matches in Alicante.

The first meeting of the new year will be on the 15th of January at 11.00am. This will be an EGM to formulate a new Committee: see web site for more details. The Clubs home is at the Bar El Alto La Dolores which is to be found just off the N332 between La Mata and Guardamar.

Think the majority of them were hungover from their luncheon at Eddies the day before which had continued into the evening so this affected their playing skills! Instead of getting better I think we are getting worse! We failed to get a game although the closest game was in the singles with Christine playing against Michelle but unfortunately the double wouldn't go in for Christine and Michelle crept in and got D1. Christine got our highest score

of 98 and a 71. Other good scores from the queens, Margaret scored 83,74 70, Lorraine 70,72,60, Marie 79, Lyn 65, 64,73, 83, Debs 60, The Bees were just buzzin’ all night with doubles flying in everywhere.

John threw D20 in the first trebles, Eddie needed 32 but decided it was more fun getting two doubles, a D7 and D9 finish in the 2nd trebles, Graham a D1 in the third trebles. In the doubles, the Queens were just outplayed with a D16 from Dave, a D20 from graham and a D4 from John to take them into a 6-0 lead at half time.

The queens were trying to get together the words for their song I've got 2, 2, 2 (or even 1,1,1 would have been nice) for the start of the singles but nothing was forthcoming. So into the singles and Eddie got D2 in the first single. In the 2nd single hot-shot Tim secured an impressive 19 dart finish scoring a 140, 80, 60,60, 78,43 leaving tops for his 19th arrow against Lorraine. It was all over in a flash at 7 times up on the hockey. Dave’s D20 against Marie in the 3rd game, Graham’s D1 in the 4th and Michelle’s D1 in the 5th took them to 11-0. Then Good ole Harvey or rather young Harvey scored an impressive 95, 85, 81 and D1 against Lyn for the match despite the latter chalking up a respectable 64, 72 and 83.

For the Bees, Drone Dave scored a 100 whilst Tim scored a 140 but Graham stung us all, scoring 5 x 100 and a 135.

The only other excitement for the queens was Debbie's 50th Birthday countdown pressie surprise, at least she got 2, 2, 2 presents! Some snowman slipper socks and a banana which raised more than a few smiles from everyone as it brought back memories of our Benidorm darts weekend.

Eurogolf Christmas Texas Scramble On Tuesday 13th December Eurogolf played a Texas Scramble followed by a meal in the Clubhouse and the members meals were subsidized. As the restaurant was fully booked for the Thursday we had to swap Toffs and Eurogolf days. We also held a raffle and €150 was raised for the Captains charity which is Caritas Rojales. The last outing of the year saw 23 of us travel to RODA. Although the course was a bit wet in places this did not stop us having a good day. Back at Paddy's we enjoyed an excellent buffet despite the main bar and kitchen being out of action. Thank you Rory, Hazel, Danielle and all the staff for again looking after us.

I bet that you can recall many occasions when your game on the first nine holes has been absolutely dreadful but you have played well on the back nine.

Torry deep in the relegation mire, with a real 6 pointer local derby at local rivals Almoradi on the agenda next Weds.

On a foul windswept rainy lunchtime inside El Palmar Stadium, Pedreno´s men took on the side just one place above them in the league, knowing that an improvement on recent matches was essential if they were to avoid defeat. As per normal, they started off so well, creating 4 good

At this point Torry lost their discipline, Matheus and Calzado receiving yellow cards in quick succession.

Borriol were pressing hard for goal number 2, only denied by the brilliance of Buba, and defender Carrasco who ´took one for the team´ when picking up a yellow card, thus denying a promising attack on goal.

Pedreno brought on Pastor, Booker then Soto, in an effort to inject fresh urgency, but alas it failed to have the desired effect.

Inevitably, the hosts got their 2nd goal, courtesy of the brilliant Bielsa, who´s been a thorn in Torry´s side for many years. To rub salt into their wounds, they finished the match with only 10 players, as Carrasco picked up another booking, and will now miss the trip to Almoradi.

Make a note of Torry´s next home match at Nelson Mandela Stadium, when Villarreal ´C´ are the visitors on Sun 8 Jan, ko 5pm.

We started the week with a Waltzer (1-2-3) which was won

On Weds we played our weekly stableford competition and with the tees being well back the scores were significantly lower than normal with no one was able to beat par. There were three teams with 90 pts but the winners with 91 pts despite declaring a score of 92 pts were Reg Akehurst, Lindsay Forbes, Ken Robertson and 'Albert'.

e held our last game of the season on our home course Vistabella. After all the rain the course was in very good nick with lovely greens which made putting easy if you found the right line.!! It was our Xmas Bash and we played a medal for the Charlies Bar Trophy which was won by Ray O’sullivan with the top score of the day a Nett 76 which included a Hole in One on the 4th green. Well done Ray Thursday 15th we had the presentation dinner with 36 players and wives at Charlies Bar in Torreta 11.

With music by Adam Slater, it was the best one ever out of the 6 we have held in the past, I think the first persons to leave left about midnight.
