Oh What a night!

Simon Weston CBE was in town once again last Friday evening when he presented his one man show ‘An Evening with…’ to a packed audience at the Olympia Restaurant, Mil Palmeras.

Simon, who is regarded as one of the very best speakers on the UK circuit, showed his worth as he captivated over 350 people, all of whom were there to pay homage to the

Falklands Veteran.

The former Welsh Guardsman was supported on stage by one of the Costa Blanca’s foremost young talents, Rebecca Holt, who, despite her tender years, has also been a longtime champion of the Royal British Legion, organisers of the evening’s event.

And it was Rebecca who got the evening underway with one of her signature acts, a tribute to the war years for which she was dressed in the uniform of an ENSA (Entertainments National Service Association) L/Cpl. Continued on Page 6

Two Fund-Raisers and Two Cruise Winners in September Charity fund-raising nights are a monthly feature at Restaurante El Alto La Dolores. In September, however, two such nights were held, raising a total of 1,670 euros for charity. The benefiting charities were Elche Children's Care Home and The Cats and Dogs Association.

Restaurant owners donated a Mediterranean Cruise for the raffle on each night. Winner of the first cruise was Denise Van Der Goten, from

Torrevieja, and the second winner was Colleen Bryce of La Marina.

Another cruise will be available on Wednesday, 19th October, when money will be raised for Torrevieja Stroke Support. Woody & The Peckers will be entertaining. Tickets, at just 10 euros, are available from the Restaurant, The Card Place in Benimar and Redz Cafe Bar in Quesada.

Gone But Not Forgotten, Memories of the Stars The members of Campoverde Theatre Group were delighted to eventually present Gabby Kelly with a memento of an engraved cut glass vase in memory of her husband Tony Kelly who was Chairman of Campoverde Theatre Group for over 7 years.

Tony Kelly was a well known artiste who had entertained throughout England alongside well know celebrities like Russ Abbot and has entertained very receptive audiences at countless local venues for many years.

Alongside his professional career Tony was a passionate member of the Campoverde Theatre Group, not only as Chairman but also acting, singing and even directing, he helped the theatre group raise considerable sums of money for many local charities. Tony was one of the local stars who is very sadly missed.

Campoverde Theatre Group’s latest production is a tribute to some of the well known stars of entertainment that have died this year. So many well know writers, actors, singers and

media personalities have died that the group felt that it would be appropriate to remember some of these much loved personalities. Come along and enjoy a fun filled evening at Campoverde Theatre Group’s latest production, Gone But Not Forgotten; Memories of the Stars, a supper show to be staged at the Phoenix Nights Bar, San Miguel de Salinas.

This show promises to be a great evening of entertainment and the evening promises to show a very affectionate look at stars who will continue to live in our memories.

In memory of Tony Kelly

HELP shows High Fashion On Thursday 29th Sept. HELP Murcia Mar staged it´s summer fashion show at the Las Claras centre Los Narejos.

Introduced by HELP member Tricia Brister the models Dianna, Ann, Leonie, Christine, Sue, Jean, Gill, Margaret, Sandy and Bella paraded in a variety of outfits from chic casual day wear to formal evening wear in front of an audience of 90 HELP members, friends and the general public. All the items on show had been donated and HELP would like to thank Solo Boutique of Los Balones and the members of the public who gave so generously such an array of top class women’s clothes. During the show background music was supplied by Ron and when the models had finished promenading all the items shown were then put on sale.

Thanks to the generosity of those attending the show raised a total of € 780 which will enable HELP to

help the poor and needy in the Murcia region. This popular show was a real team effort and we would like to thank all the volunteers who gave of their time and put such effort into making the afternoon a success.

It is hoped to do it all again in the spring with a new collection.

2017 Solidarity Calendar dedicated to Women in the Community

T

he 2017 Torrevieja Solidarity calendar this year follows the same format as in recent years. A 16-page bound A-3 size, full coloured, with over 70 photos and the theme is “Women in the Community”. Several photographers have kindly donated their photos for this calendar enriching the whole project.

This is the 11th calendar produced by Andy Ormiston with a print run of 2,000 calendars that are distributed among several NGO’s and associations. Again it is free to solidarity organizations that then sell it on to supplement their own funds, so there are no middlemen involved with a recommended selling price of five Euros.

Once again the printing and design has been paid for by generous donations from local businesses Aroca Sequier Abogados, Alamo Costa Blanca Real Estate, Brithol MAPFRE Seguros, Currency Direct, and Atlas Insurance Brokers.

Andy Ormiston is responsible for the text while the distribution of the calendar is through many NGOs whose volunteers do such wonderful work.

Representatives of many of the groups were present at the press presentation and they underline the vast assortment of voluntary assistance in the Vega Baja that covers the poor and homeless, the sick both in and out of hospital, those with deadly ill-

nesses, the old and young, orphans, people in distress, broken families, ex-servicemen, animals and our environment; then we have our entertainers who bring us a smile as their performances raise money for so many charities.

The audience comprised of a dozen or more charities who will all benefit from the calendar by selling it to their members and supporters, the proceeds from which will be donated to their funds.

Charities attending included The Royal British Legion, Age Concern, HELP, AECC , TAABS, AFA, K9, Reach Out, Rascals, Stagestruck, and La Mata Natural Park Volunteers and others.

The event took place in the stunning grounds of the offices of ArocaSequier Abogados in Rocajuna who also laid on a tapas and refreshments.

Finally a company representative made a presentation of three cheques, each of 3200 euro, to HELP, AFA and Caritas, in appreciation for the splendid work they have done throughout the year within the community. The sum was provided jointly by Aroca Sequier Abogados and Currencies Direct.

YOUR SERVICES ARE URGENTLY NEEDED

For the La Siesta Evangelical Church on the La Siesta Urbanization in Torrevieja We have a wonderful church with an equally wonderful and friendly congregation, who make all new members feel very welcome and included in our services.

Up until earlier this year we also had a magnificent choir who led the congregation in the singing of hymns. Unfortunately, this is now missing, as we have lost both our long-standing Choir Master and our lead organist.

WHERE ARE ALL THE CHOIR LEADERS AND CHURCH ORGANISTS? WE REALLY DO NEED YOUR HELP! We have a wonderful choir of approximately 20

strong who really need someone to lead them and someone to play for them. The Choir would normally sing at our 11.00am services which are held every 2nd and 4th Sunday, (and 5th Sunday, when this applies). Our new Choir Leader could possibly have been a Music Teacher or been part of a Choir or Band.

In addition, as well as our wonderful church organ we have an electric piano, so anyone who could play either of these instruments would be greatly appreciated to accompany the choir.

Our new church organist/pianist would also be required to help our existing organist with our 9.30am Services on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month.

Our Church is very proud of its Choir and appreciate them singing to a congregation of about 100.

The Choir is a happy bunch who enjoy sharing their love of music, and it shows, so if you also love music please join us.

Cruising through Torrevieja The troubled cruise ship Albatros docked just off the Torrevieja coast on Saturday afternoon and evening allowing it’s 600 passengers to spend a relaxed afternoon and evening in the town.

Travelling from its home port of Bremerhaven to Genoa in Italy the liner was en route to the Balearics as it enjoyed a stopover in the Port Marina Salinas of Torrevieja for about seven hours helping to promote tourism and trade in the city. The predominantly German Tourists enjoyed bus trips around the local area as well as the tourist train around the town before leaving at about 2am on Sunday morning.

This is the second time in just over a year ago that a cruise liner has stopped off the Torrevieja coast with the previous liner also owned by the German company Phoenix Reisen.

She gave a masterly performance featuring many of the period hits that were especially well received by the enthusiastic audience.

As Becky brought part one of the evening to a close she was pleasantly surprised when Simon Weston then appeared on stage to present her with a jeweled poppy brooch, as a thankyou for the years of support that she has provided to The RBL in Spain.

Following a short introduction by Orihuela Costa Branch President, Pastor Keith Brown, there followed a rapturous reception for Simon Weston which surprised even the man himself, as he quickly realised the esteem in which he is quite clearly held on the Costa Blanca.

Simon then spent over an hour recounting his days, from the fateful invasion of the Falkland Islands in 1982 that so dramatically changed his life, through the 90 or more operations and medical procedures he has undergone, his family life, experiences, and his relationship with the royals, throwing in many anecdotes and amusing stories along the way, all the while radiating optimism, courage and strength to the captivated audience.

His irrepressible humour and infectious enthusiasm was clearly visible as he had his Mil Palmeras admirers spellbound for almost an hour before switching from direct delivery when he then provided the audience with an opportunity for questions and answers, his final message being one of sheer determination and acceptance of whatever difficulties you are likely to meet along the way.

“The only obstacles to achieving one’s targets and successes are those you create for yourself,” he said, his words never failing to inspire.

As Simon concluded his presentation the audience rose to their feet in applause, clearly demonstrating the admiration in which the Falklands war hero is still held on the Costa Blanca.

Rebecca then returned to the stage for her second spell, this time following a more modern theme. Simon, meanwhile, continued his evening’s work where he continued to be in great demand, signing almost 50 purchased copies of his autobiography. He then spent over an hour meeting many of the Mil Palmeras crowd before the evening was finally brought to a close.

The event was organised by the Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion and supported by the generous sponsorship of Avalon, Currencies Direct and Sanchez Butron Solicitors with profits donated to the annual poppy appeal.

Neglected road markings a danger to public Surface markings, including centre lines and zebra crossings, have badly faded on majority of the roads in and around the Orihuela Costa putting motorists and pedestrians at risk.

Zebra lines are almost transparent at many busy junctions and crossings, particularly along the Calle del Mar and Calle Agua in Aguamarina/Cabo Roig leading onto the N332.

Cars ‘speed across the crossings without even seeing them’ and there have been a number of near misses, people living at the nearby homes say.

Robert Simmons said: “It’s over six months since I

first reported it to the Playa Flamenca Town Hall and still nothing has been done. There are perhaps 20 need repainting along Calle del Mar and down the adjacent streets, some being far worse than others because of the weight of traffic.”

“I’ve been on and on at them to repaint the zebra crossings and the white lines because it’s dangerous. After nightfall the crossings are almost invisible and it is only a matter of time before we have a serious accident.”

“I was told last year it was a priority and would be done in a few weeks, but we are still waiting.”

Giving back British expats the right to vote The government today published detailed plans on how it will deliver its commitment to allow all expats to vote in parliamentary elections

The Minister for the Constitution, Chris Skidmore, announced the policy statement which sets out how the government will remove the current 15year time limit on British citizens who live abroad registering as overseas electors.

The changes would give all eligible British citizens who have lived in the UK a lifelong right to vote in parliamentary elections. It would mean all eligible overseas electors are able to register to vote quickly and easily, while maintaining the integrity of the electoral register and guarding against fraud.

Chris Skidmore, Minister for the Constitution, said: “This statement shows how we will introduce ‘votes for life’, scrapping the 15-year rule. British citizens who move abroad remain a part of our democracy and it is important they have the ability to participate. Following the British people’s decision to leave the EU, we now need to strengthen ties with countries around the world and show the UK is an outward-facing nation. Our expat community has an important role to play in helping Britain expand international trade, especially given two-thirds of expats live outside the EU. “Expats retain strong links with the United Kingdom: they may have family here, and indeed they may plan to return here in the future. Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.

‘Por Favor’ As a child growing up, I was taught what was seen as ‘basic good manners’. I was often told to “mind your manners”, and thoroughly drilled in the use of “please” and “thank you”. If I forgot, or ignored basic courtesy, my parents, or other relatives, quickly reminded me.

This process of being civilised by adults caused me some confusion when I first started to learn Spanish. I remember being warned not to over use the Spanish words ‘por favor’ (please) when ordering in a cafe bar, or in shops, on the basis that the Spanish rarely use the expression, and when foreigners use it, it is seen as “unacceptably pushy”.

This comment confused me, and over the years I have made a point of listening to the Spanish ordering food and drink in bars and restaurants, and it is true that very few Spanish use these simple words of courtesy. Their orders are more of a demand than a request, but they mostly say “gracias” afterwards.

Don't misunderstand me, most Spanish people are polite; they may smile and add a friendly thank you, but the basic manners of courtesy, as many British people were traditionally taught, are simply not used.

Maybe things are about to change if a recent report is to be believed.

One cafe owner, Maria, in Madrid, is so annoyed with many of her Spanish customers whom she regards as rude that she is charging more for coffee and pastries to those customers whom she regards as

impolite. Prices may vary from 3 euros for a coffee to 5 euros if customers are deemed to be rude. The price of a cup of good coffee can fall to as low as 1.30 euros if a customer is especially polite. It is the little words of ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ that make all the difference, according to Maria.

The idea was inspired by a similar scheme in France, which has been a great success. It is working in Maria’s cafe bar too, and Maria reports that already she has seen a change in attitude and politeness to both herself and her staff. Maria blames the pace of everyday life that has become so hectic, and customers simply forget to be polite until it hurts their pockets.

Much of this is a cultural issue, of course, and Maria, who is from Columbia, maintains that the Spanish are less inclined to use the words ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ than by people in her own country,

who Maria sees as more well-mannered.

I can see where Maria is coming from, but I would also like her to consider the option of customers being allowed to pay less for their coffee and croissant if the waiter is rude, does not listen or gets the order wrong. Personally, I am all for good manners, and I am grateful that my parents ensured that I behaved appropriately. I will continue to use ‘por favor’ when I order my coffee and croissant, but only in moderation.

Triple - I have to hang my head, and humbly apologise to you all. On checking my records I find that the Triple has always been 1 leg, since introducing this Format back into the League in recent years. I had updated the Result Sheet on my lost Memory Stick to say 3 x 701 ready for printing and Internationally, a Triple is played 5 x 701.

In terms of ability levels, our league is diverse and the original idea was that it was a game for

Beginner Players hence 1 leg. However, I am proud to say teams in our League are always competitive, despite the vast ability range, and because they want to win most teams do not always put beginner players into the Triple. So maybe for next season, we need to look at this in good time to decide whether to update to 3 x 701.

Primadonnas - Towards the end of last Season the Primadonnas team looked like folding completely, but due to the hard work of Sheelah the new Captain and Debbie now Vice Captain over the summer months, the team have reformed in The New Tavern Bar, in San Miguel because their previous bar closed. They are now looking to recruit one or two more players to compliment their existing team. Already they have the basis of a really nice team and their Captain Sheelah Cooper would be more than pleased to hear from you if you would like to join them. By Rod Edgerton Our slumber for the summer is over and the wheels got back into action with the visit of a Touring Team, Hemel Hempstead and it was a good start to the season as we get rid of the rust from not playing regularly.

The match finished with a close win for La Siesta in a rinks match by 101to 94. The star rink for La Siesta was that of John ad Hilary Clarke with Roy and Sheila Milward who won 22-13.

For Hemel Hempstead Mary Kinzamann,Jimmy Quigley,Martin Green and John Tierney truimphed over their opposition 18-13.

To come shortly are further Touring Teams visiting us are Radlett,Fleet and Burgess Hill and the Winter League commences with the visit of San Miguel on Wednesday.

Lets look forward to a competitive but most importantly an enjoyable season.

Monte Mar Bowls & Social Club Sponsored by The Belfry, The Pub, Bowling Abroad and Avalon Thursday 6th October saw us hosting the first of five Touring teams from the U.K. over the next ten day period. During this time we also have three league games to fit in so a busy time for Monte Mar. Our first visitors were from the Dolphins Bowls Club based in Poole, Dorset.

As the Dolphins only arrived in Spain the night before we may have caught them not at the top of there game, as we had a good win. We had a great mornings bowling, with good bowling from both teams. With our visitors enjoying playing in the sunshine.

The bowling was followed by a well deserved drink and most enjoyable lunch at El Rincon with lots of laughter. Ladies from our Social Committee organised a very successful raffle. Our visitors departed promising to return next year as they had a day to remember. Next up Hempstead Bowls Club Monday 10th.

On Friday, the rinks team Cliff, Val, Chris and Stuart had a good win, and the winning triples team Eileen McLaren, Tom Dalgleish and Mary Dyer had a very close finish. The ladies pairs of Gail Willshire and Lynn Greenland, had a nip and tuck

Greenlands Bowls Club on Tour Well we have arrived back from our 5 day trip to Mojacar where we all enjoyed the super hotel the Marina Playa and all its amenities.

On Sunday it was just a short (but uphill) walk to our first game against Mojacar Bowls Club.

The weather was very hot, but nevertheless an enjoyable game was had by all. On Monday we visited The Indalo Bowls Club and were made very welcome by our hosts, once again the heat was intense and many a bottle of water was drunk to keep hydrated.

On Tuesday we returned to Mojacar B.C. for our final game with them before a well deserved rest on the Wednesday. For most of the members it was a chance to use the local

bus service to sightsee and do some shopping in the shopping plaza and a visit to the old town of Mojacar proved very interesting.

Thursday was our last game at Almeria B.C situated on the Los Gallardos caravan site, the extreme heat required the match to be curtailed after 16 ends to every ones relief. The club thanked

Dave Giddings for all his hard work in organizing the trip and we wish him get well soon and back to his bowling best.

The league starts next week so here's hoping for an enjoyable and successful season.

First up in the triples for the home team was Alan Havelock, who scored the season’s first ‘180’ the week before, supported by last week’s MOTM Jimmy Grey and Phil Husband. They faced Lee Holtham [140] (pictured), Joe Miller and birthday boy Sean Smith who clinched the first game for the Hyenas [85, 81: 6-D16].

Captain Mallinson threw first in the 2nd triple and chalked up a tasty 125 and 85, with team mates Lister and Harris (100) bolstering up his efforts but it was the three hyenas Eyre (85, 81, 99) Harrison (100) and Joe Hawkins S20-D20 sizzler that got the point in this very close game. In the first of the pairs, Captain Mallinson scored 117 to leave 40 which team mate Lister (78) secured with D20 first dart giving them their first point which was not an easy victory against Eyre’s (100 x2) and Holtham’s 85. But this must have raised the hyenas hackles as they hit straight back, again with Smith doing the business with a 180 and then checking out S20-D10. Havelock put up a brave response with a couple of tons and a sober Si Williams chipped in with an 81. The Hyenas also took the last pairs point with Hawkins (125, 100) and Miller (85, D20 first dart) finding their mark against Wing and Grey. Half time score 1-5.

In the first of the singles matches, Alan Havelock (100, 85, D8) pulled back a point for the Ale House against Holtham (77, 85, 80).

From then on though the Hyenas took the last five singles Harrison 81, 81 D20 1st Dart; Eyre 140, 127, 85 and D13 1st dart; Super Smith 100 x2, 85, D5 1st dart, Hawkins 92, 81, D20 1st dart and finally Miller 81, 81, D20. Although many of the games went to the wire it was the very quick finishing from the laughing Hyena boys that gave them their well- deserved victory and maintains their position as league leaders in this 2nd week of the season.

Other matches to deserve a mention were the Hub Hellraisers attaining their very first ever win since they joined the league last season.

Very well done girls! The Junction Jackals were also very pleased with their win over last year’s league winners- El Capitan.

It seems members had no lasting hangover from the previous Saturday’s outgoing Captain’s dinner where Barry Roehrig handed over the reins to the new incumbent. Excellent scoring ensued, with a couple of members of the Society’s Pink Quesada league team, which overcame the trophy holding SMGS Blue team in Monday’s first round of this year’s Quesada League, leading the way, Glenn Rapley and Roger Webb winning their categories. Glenn had the joint best score of the day along with Kyree Skarsmoen, their 40 points being followed by a host of other good scores, 29 members recording 32 points, the lowest category prize winning score, or above.

At prize giving members Richard and Camel McCann kindly donated to SMGS’s charity pot by handing over their favourite piggy bank, the contents of which, 125 euros, will be given to one of the next charities SMGS’s Committee determines to support. We thank them very much for their generous donation to a worthy cause.

Silver Category: 5th Keith Wraithmell (36 on CB), 4th Nick Spicer (36 on CB), 3rd Ken Flaherty (36 on CB), 2nd Phil Birtwistle (39) and 1st, equalling Kyree in Bronze with 40 points, Glen Rapley.

Gold Category: 5th Bjorn Petterson (36 on CB), 4th Jamie Rorison (37 on CB), 3rd Darren Hancock (37 on CB), 2nd Eva Petterson (37 on CB), and 1st, Roger Webb with 38 points.

The Abacus was won by Les Wilton.

Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Norman Cahill (6 and 13), Les Wilton (9) and Brian Mulligan (17).

The Best Guest was Alan McCombie, winning with 33 points.

There is no such thing as ‘one of those days’ because each day is what you make of it and remember a bad day on the golf course is better than a good day at work.

You start the day intending to play well and win but once this possibility becomes remote change your goals and remain in the ‘present’ because you can’t influence or alter what has happened in the past.

Aim to play the next hole in net par and then the following three holes in net par and so on.

If you can get anything from the remainder of the round it will set you up for a better start to your next game.

Do not miss the opportunity to learn something from every round because bad experiences help you to enjoy the good times on the golf course.

QUESADA GOLF SUPER LEAGUE - FONT DEL LLOP GOLF OCTOBER 3RD Match 1 of the 2016/17 season.

What would it hold with a new team and rising green fees. It was certainly an early start arriving at the course in the dark for an 8.20am 1st and 10th tee. We managed to get off to a good start with all the Captains paying for their complete teams in one go, at last!

As the dawn broke the course looked in excellent condition and no wind.

All the teams got away from the 1st and 10th on time and the scores began to ebb and flow in the normal match play way. The sun came out and left us with the perfect golfing day. As the teams finished and the cards were scrutinised our new team had bagged first place.

La Unica Golf Society This new and latest established Society held their inaugural match at Alenda Golf.

Although the course was not in the best of condition the players taking part managed to achieve some excellent scores.

With two players getting 36 points,who incidentally were brothers in law,then the overall placings had to be decided on countback and on this occasion Jim Bremmer took the honours from Tony Foster.

Nearest the pin prizes were won by Paul Dexter hole 3, Tony Foster holes 5 and 13, Ken Maguire hole 16.

After the match all players returned to La Unica tapas bar for a welcome drink and some excellent food prepared and presented by Marina the Hostess of La Unica.

Members in attendance discussed the way ahead and interim secretary Bill Fantom reminded everyone that details were on the society web site and that the next match would be at Alicante.

He also suggested that a small group of members should meet at a later date to discuss which courses to visit during 2017

CONFIDENCE KNOCKED AFTER HEAVY DEFEATS

Montesinos new coach Carlos Perez has taken up the baton at a club where the players are lacking in confidence - in the wake of the sacking of manager Camacho - that came on the back of two heavy defeats in their opening two games in the Segunda Regional Grupo 16, 2016-17 campaign.

"Confidence has been knocked - after two big defeats," said Carlos, after 3-0 and 4-1 losses this term.

Carlos, who took the reins this week, took charge of a friendly game against Todo Deportivo at the weekend (October 9), ahead of the league fixture against RP Orihuela on October 16 at The Municipal Stadium, Los Montesinos - where he hopes to stop the rot.

The club have been hit with injuries - including Vazquinho who is sidelined until the end of the month - and Carlos said: "There are enough players to work with, although it must be said there is a notable shortness in fitness.

"Injuries - to important players play a factor too. And once they return to full fitness I am confident we will have a good side."

Carlos, formerly at Valencia CF reserve team Mestalla, and CF Torrevieja under coach Macan, went into management at Bigastro, Guardamar and Torrevieja after his playing career ended.

"After five years at Torrevieja it was disappointing to leave - but that's football. You understand that as a manager," said Carlos.

"The support at Torrevieja was tremendous - and the same applies here at CD Montesinos with the Full Monte Supporters Club. I look forward to meeting as many of them as possible," said Carlos.

"CD Montesinos is a well run club, with the management and committee working very hard. Once I was approached to become their new coach I gladly accepted," added Carlos.

"The supporters are highly spoken of. There's great support, and great attendance figures, which I hope to see increase - if we can start winning games and play attractive football," said Carlos.

Torry have no answer to stylish Castellon CD Torrevieja ................... 0 CD Castellon .................... 3 Comings and goings during the last week, have seen Torry´s first team squad reduced to only 13 players, although youth team players will make up the bench when required.

First choice keeper until recently has been Marcano, but he´s now been released, alongside regular and ever present captain, Pastor.

Goodbye Pastor, hello another Pastor, as the ex Torry favourite re joins the club, following his spell in University over in the good old U S of A. Sunday’s opponents, Castellon, lay in 14th place, with a record of W3 L1 D3, whereas Torry were desperate to improve on their only point of the season, gained from the last home match against Novelda.

Castellon took the game to Torry from the offset, forcing Buba to a blinding save on 10 mins, when he tipped a fierce drive aside for a corner. On 29 mins, the impressive Zarzo almost found the target, but his effort went wide of Buba´s near post.

Just before the interval, a cross from the left by Juanfran allowed Lolo to open the scoring for Castellon, which in all fairness they deserved for the number of chances created.

Lewis made way for Santi, as Torry were forced to make changes. Juanmi thought he´d scored on 72 mins, but his effort was ruled out for a foul on Buba. On the stroke of 90 mins, Castellon added a 3rd goal, which only served to rub salt into the many wounds of CD Torrevieja.

On Weds 12 Oct, Torry visit Bunol, then on Sun 16 Oct, ko 6pm, they have another home match at Nelson Mandela Stadium, this time against Muro.

We started the week with a 2 ball better ball which was played in perfect weather conditions.

Unfortunately there were a few no shows largely due to excesses the previous evening drowning their sorrows after the Ryder Cup defeat.

Nevertheless the pairing of Brian Dent and Peter Wickham came home with an excellent score of 46 pts to win by 5 points from Geoff Biggerstaff and Bryan Neal with 41 pts.

It was the second medal round of three to find our Club Champion on Wednesday. Lindsay Forbes had the best round with a net 71 thanks to a few fortunate assists from the numerous trees surrounding the course which for most tend to be a hindrance rather than a help. As usual there were 2 Categories on the day and the top three in each were as follows:

2's Club: Rod Doel, Marleen Billen, Terry Cullen, Reg Akehurst, Lindsay Forbes and Heinz Lei There was a shock result in the preliminary round of our Pairs Knockout Match Play championship with last years winners Lindsay Forbes and Maria Oldenziel being eliminated by Reg Akehurst and Heinz Lei 3 & 2. The only other match saw Ron Phipps and Hendrick Oldenziel beat Yvonne Phipps and Rod Doel with the match going to an extra hole. The majority of our members played a Mulligan with Doug Wright taking first place with 36 pts. Mike Chapman was second with 35 pts and Ken Robertson third with 34 pts beating Peter Radcliffe on a count back.

Carp-R-Us Club News On 6th October our anglers fished Round 4 of the Autumn Series on the Eden Canal section of the River Segura in Guardamar.

Winner on the day was Mark Foden with 3.42kg, second was Derek King with 2.52kg third was Tom Marshall with 2.16kg and fourth Steve Collins with 2.14kg.

Next week, Round 5, will be fished on the Embalse de Pedrera, on 13th October. Please meet at the top at 7.30am.

Round 6 the following week will be back on the Eden Canal. Both matches fishing from 9.00 till 2.00.

The next Quiz night is on 11th October commencing at 7.30pm. Cost of entry is 1€ per person and teams of 6 or less can take part.

Our next Sunday Meeting is on 16th October with the Committee meeting at 10.30 followed by the General meeting at 11.00.

Please return any trophies won last year to the Committee by 6th November. Thank you.

For those of you who fish the Murcia region, Rangers have intervened on 18th and 25th September on the Embalse de Cierva , where Spanish fishing matches were being held. So be careful if fishing any where in the Murcia region.
