BAICO policy owners get extension
POLICY HOLDERS of British-American Insurance (BAICO) Policyholders who have not yet registered for BACOL membership and the legal action against the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, now have a new window through which to do so. Those who are still desirous of registering now have an extension until July 15 2022. Interested persons are urged to contact the Case Manager in their country. In the case of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Case Managers are: Kay BacchusBaptiste, Tel:(784)4571828; or Stephen Huggins, Tel: (784)4571687); or Louise Mitchell, Tel: (784)4531722. BACOL, which groups British American and CLICO policy holders
with the main objective of providing them with an opportunity to pool their energies/resources, in an effort to correct the injustice that had been meted out upon the collapse of both companies, filed an application for special leave on July 13, 2021 with the Caribbean Court of Justice. This action was in pursuance of what a team of legal luminaries said was a strong case against the Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. The action against the government of Trinidad and Tobago is aimed at recovering over EC$800 million that remain unpaid to over 7,500 policy holders, following the collapse of BAICO/CL Financial in 2009. The extent of the effect of the collapse is, according to Dr Patrick
Further income support as of July 1 OVER THREE THOUSAND (3000) ATM cards have been distributed to head of households under the Volcano Eruption Emergency Programme. This programme is funded by the World Bank, through negotiations by the government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, to the tune of 12 million EC dollars. As of July 1, 2022, families will start receiving payments through to December 2022. Approximately 4 thousand families are expected to benefit from the income support. They will receive from 300-600 dollars depending on the size of the family. Prime Minister, Dr Ralph Gonsalves, speaking on radio last week Wednesday, said “others will be put on, but not the full 4 thousand, …but persons
whose names would be added on …but who do not meet the July 1 deadline, …their names would go on in July, and they would get 2 payments on August the first, so they wouldn’t miss their aggregate of six payments.” Card distributions have taken place in Georgetown, Coulls Hill, Troumaca, Spring Village and other communities affected by the eruptions of La Soufriere. The Prime Minister also announced that, the team from the Ministry of National Mobilisation would be on Bequia on Monday 27 July at the Bequia Revenue Office Conference Room, to begin the process of registering people under the COVID-19 payment programme. Under this CDB funded programme, over 7-hundred families in the green zone will get support. Dr. Gonsalves said the numbers might get to 1 thousand families. (Source: API)

Divide and rule IS THERE A SCENT OF DIVIDE AND RULE tactics in our land? Is there a sense that those who already wield power over the parliament and by extension the population, are so insecure that they have resorted to a Divide and Rule tactic so as to maintain power? According to the Collins Dictionary, Divide and Conquer is “a concept that refers to a policy intended to keep someone in a position of power by causing disagreements among people who might otherwise unite against them.” Other political science texts define it as a measure aimed at gaining power by breaking up larger concentrations of power into chunks that individually have less power than the one implementing the strategy. Reading tells us that the idea of Divide and Rule - an historical political strategy - is attributed to Niccolo Machiavelli, an Italian politician famous for developing strategies aimed at discarding moral virtues. So, by picking up on Machiavelli’s idea and dividing and ruling their foes as well as interest groups within their domain, leaders throughout history have reinforced their ability to selfishly keep their positions of power and authority, especially over those whom they are likely to manipulate during an election time, if we may fast forward to modern time. And as much as we might be seeing examples of how effective this strategy is — see the situation with fisherfolk in Rose Place for example — it might be instructive for those who may have benefitted from the Divide and Rule concept, to be reminded that there are possible disadvantages. Perhaps the most telling of these disadvantages is that leaders concerned with preserving their own power through the ‘application’ of the Divide and Rule concept, might well undermine group cohesion and cooperation rather than foster their group’s objectives, and by doing so they may not obtain the respect and appreciation of other groups. So, while the objective of winning an argument or successfully selling an idea to a particular interest group — or what is referred today as a stakeholder —
may protect a leader’s own position, this may well disconnect with the residual defeated group, and even other groups that impact the given situation. So while an immediate gain is had, the repercussion may not augur well for the long term; it may well develop into a case in which the ‘power’ of the conqueror erodes. Leaders who employ the Divide and Rule tactic because they see it as a plausible means to an end, must be warned that leaders who seek selfish interests, behave in a divide-and-conquer way and disregards the views, sentiments, history and culture of a particular group, will hinder positive cohesive relationships, and may not be rewarded with the respect and trust of their colleagues and as a consequence, they may lose prestige. Let’s be honest about something: While a basic, common belief is that governments should be representative of the entire population and work towards its benefit, this has never been the way they’ve worked. Even the best governments, one way or another, are forced to play off population groups against one another in order to achieve certain goals, or so is one school of thought. That school of thought would also say that the practice of the Divide and Rule concept is not a failing in government; they would say it is a legitimate political strategy. The problem, of course, is that authoritarian, autocratic governments are much better at it because they explicitly rely on such manipulations to stay in power and are schooled in methods of disguise. Whatever, those who share the view that Divide and Rule, accept it as a ‘legitimate political strategy’, defeat the ideals of true democracy…. that the good of a people must not be determined by trying to convince and manipulate one section that this is correct and any other idea is irrelevant. To deliberately divide a people using interests and practices that have bound them together through generations, is to commit a misdeed of phenomenal proportions that, who knows, could change the course of history for the worse. We, for the sake of peace and harmony, pray that it does not.
Our Prison and the Economy ARE WE COMFORTABLE using prison labour to continue to suppress the market price of locally grown agricultural produce? I cannot help but ask this question after hearing the Ministry of Agriculture address a group of farmers in North Leeward a few weeks ago. First, he told them the government would buy all the products they produce. This initiative was to restart the food giveaway program. Why? At this meeting, he also mentioned wanting to expand the prison farm at Belle Isle. I could not help but reflect on the words of Nelson Mandela: “It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.” Well, let’s examine the merits of the expansion plan of the prison farm. By the minister’s admission, this would increase production to more than the prison needs to feed itself. He went on to say excess food produced will the sold on the local market or, what is becoming a standard mantra for Mr. Caesar, “the extra food can be exported.” When will someone pull this honorable man aside and tell him that his continued dream of exporting agricultural produce cannot be wished into existence? Creating an export option for farm produce in SVG requires a deliberate plan and a significant investment. But, that is not my main issue with the concept of expanding the prison farm at Belle Isle. This announcement came at the same meeting with the farmers, where he announced that the government would be paying higher than the current market price for products for the new “Love Box” initiative. I may not be bright enough to understand his reasoning, but he did not even attempt to explain his Ministry’s logic for this generous gesture. He also did not tell the farmers or us what this food handout initiative would entail. Without going into market analysis, he did, by default, acknowledge that we underpay the farmers for their produce. So why are we then embarking on expanding a state-run prison farm? As an aside, why
are we not serving more local food in our other state-run institutions? How much of the food grown at the prison farm makes it to the many nonprofit organizations feeding the poor and hungry kids in the nation? Back to the cheap/free labour at the prison, do we have a rehabilitation program at the prison? Are we genuinely training them to become farmers upon re-entering society, or are we just using them as cheap labour? Do we have a framing educational component to the rehabilitation efforts at the prison? How much are they paid per day for the work they provide? Please understand, my comments about how we treat those members of our society we are forced to incarcerate, are rooted in their welfare. I am also concerned that we do not use them in a manner that will adversely impact hard-working farmers. I also heard that the “Liberty Lodge Boys” are now going to get into the chicken and egg business as well. This decision comes after a local vet said the egg producers face many problems. In her estimation, eggs should be sold at about $11.20 per dozen or $28/flat. In a conversation with the farmers, the price of eggs should be $12 per dozen or $30/flat before adjusting for the current wave of inflation. I have the same concern: how will Liberty Lodge entering the egg market help? We already have a glut in the egg market; this is a bad idea unless the Liberty Lodge school invests in broilers. As much chicken as we eat in this country, it is a good idea for the government to incentivize a chicken processing plant. For simplicity, the plant contracts farmers to grow the chickens for guaranteed prices. Yes, a rainforest for chicken. Maybe the Minister of Agriculture might have his way, and we could export any excess production. Horatio

Crippling mismanagement, a cloud of blight
IN RECENT months whenever the economic situation in St. Vincent is being discussed, particularly by those who have undertaken the responsibility for the administering of the business of the people, reference is quite often made of the COVID-19 pandemic and the eruption of the La Soufriere in April of 2021. The ULP and Dr. Gonsalves seem to be endeavouring to ensure that the Vincentian community surrender to accepting that all the elements negatively impacting our people, and painfully retarding their development and
progress, had their origins in the COVID-19 pandemic and the eruption of the La Soufriere volcano in 2021 April. But indeed these two factors, dramatic as they have been, have served merely to expose the pervasive underlying “crippling — management of the affairs of state” spread over several decades. I sometimes think of it, as, “a cloud of blight”! The prevailing socio-political atmospherics seem to be pointing to the fact, that the end of the era of Ralph Gonsalves and the ULP is
Alternatives to flour???? MR. EDITOR, with the increase in flour price (increase of 25 cents per pound) I bet you it won’t be long before those who speak without first finding out the facts, start telling us we should start buying alternatives like cassava flour. And I won’t be one bit surprised if we don’t get the same advice from our learned economists and other experts. The thing about that suggestion is this: Where in ‘hell’ are we going to get this cassava flour? When is the last time anybody saw this on our market? Is there anybody here doing cassava flour? Is better you tell me eat farine and bam bam. And don’t tell me about breadfruit flour as an alternative. That is even worse because we haven’t seen this on the market since thy-kingdom-come. It’s one thing to try and put a spin on the fact that prices increasing by saying that we have cheaper alternatives. It’s another thing when those spin doctors don’t have a clue about what they are talking. And by the way, even if we had these alternatives, who tell you they going to be cheaper than wheat flour even at the increased price? I gone. Road Runner

imminent. I wish for him long life in the interest of justice! I believe that when his legacy is soberly reflected on by the historians, it will represent the squandering of a valuable opportunity to have made a significant contribution to the construct of a dependable platform, on which the sustainable development of our people could have been effectively laid. A very sad element of this Ralph Gonsalves’ era has been the traitorous betrayal of the populace by men and women who had been held in high
regard by the people, and who ought to have asserted themselves in the protection of the well-being of the people. But they reduced themselves to the function of “bootlickers” to provide the pathway for Ralph Gonsalves to realize his dream to become ‘The World Boss’. How sad! The serious discussions on the issue of Reparations relative to the Enslavement of Africans, will no doubt soon be a significant issue for this region of ours. Those of us of the relevant orientation have a duty, to ensure that we do
all that is necessary to ensure that no ego massaging miscreant contaminates the process. Have a safe, violence-free and enjoyable Carnival 2022 Introduction this virus that is still very active and infectious. It is with this in mind that we urge Vincentians who have intent to participate fully in carnival to make the best use of all the tools available to fight the Corona Virus, and these include vaccination which is the most effective tool in the tool box. As long as COVID-19 is with us, and all indications are that it will be for a very long time, we must adapt and learn to live well with Covid with vaccination offering us the best options for normal healthy living, even if Covid persists. All evidence in SVG indicates that the vaccines work, they are safe and effective and they offer a level of protection against the virus that reduces one’s chances of critical illness and even Covid-related deaths even as one may still contract Covid. As we participate in carnival activities including major events such as shows and going on the road where physical distancing and mask wearing may not be practical, the encouragement is to utilise the additional layer of protection by getting vaccinated, it’s not too late. Over the next few days, thousands of Vincentians and visitors alike will descend on Kingstown and other locations to attend many events, and this raises the possibility of falling victim to individuals’ intent on committing crime. Even as the ULP administration has done much to improve the police’s ability to effectively perform their duties and keep us safe, those with a propensity for criminal activities will always seek to look for opportunities to thrive. We must however limit the space within which they operate. To narrow the space within which the criminals work during this time, we all need to be very vigilant as we walk through crowded places, leave our homes at night or venture out in search of social events. We are encouraged to exercise every precaution including making sure that your homes are securely locked when you leave home, always travelling in groups and avoiding dimly lit areas and securing all personal belongings when going out. These will minimise your chances of you falling victim to crime, even violent crimes during this festive Making it safe, violence-free and season. Avoiding confrontations and enjoyable instead de-escalating situations will also help to prevent violent encounters Very often, when we hear the term as individuals enjoy the festivities in a “safe” in relation to carnival, it’s clean, violence free environment. usually conflated with the concept of It cannot be stressed how important the absence of violence, but in this it is for us to conduct this year’s case for the purpose of this article, festival in a safe environment that is both concepts will be discussed as both healthy and violence free. The Ministry of Culture and the CDC announced earlier this year that they were making plans to host Vincymas 2022 with the first event held on April 30. This was much welcomed news to the components of the festival - pan, calypso and mas and pretty much every Vincentian who understands the impact of this yearly national festival on our local economy. The absence of carnival over the last two years had dealt a significant blow to SVG’s economy that trickled down to the vendors who depend yearly on this festival to ply their trade during this very active period. It must be remembered that in 2020 at the first cancellation of carnival, the ULP administration under the leadership of Comrade Ralph offered income support to entertainers, DJs and vendors who had their income impacted as a result. Over the last two years, the government also lost much revenue from the cancellation of carnival due to the significant fall-off in visitor arrivals during the period, and also from the significant reduction in economic activity that is associated with carnival. Already, this carnival season is looking “bright” and our country seems poised to host a very successful carnival 2022. Already a number of private promoters have hosted sold out events, and events by the CDC so far have seen fair attendance. The flights coming to SVG from North America and Europe are full to capacity as both Vincentians and visitors arrive to participate in Vincymas 2022. Our Argyle International Airport is a buzz of activity, and while we acknowledge further challenges to regional travel since the reduction in flight activity by LIAT, we can boast direct flight access from international source markets, which is a welcome development. Everything around us currently points to a successful carnival, but we have a role to play in ensuring that it’s safe, violence free and enjoyable.

Acts of Kindness
The Depoliticization of Policy
“Oh so simple, and yet oh so mighty are acts of human kindness.” Richelle E. Goodrich (born 1968) – American “Don’t worry about it.” An hour later, author. he returned with the key. IN SVG, politics is infected with an illness that chokes articulation and development. Policy implementation is weak and often disastrous. A senior opposition politician tried to convince me there was no difference between policy and politics. PM Gonsalves is infamous for saying, ‘I am talking policy.’ He proceeds to politicise the issue. Citizens will develop a greater appreciation for government and democratic best practices if our politicians, social activists and change agents consciously attempt to recognise the difference between policy and politics. Our politics often inform our policy when the reverse should be true. SVG is a developing democracy. We are still relatively young regarding the art of government and the graces of governance. Often we do things that retard our democracy rather than allow it to flourish and grow. A few examples are in order: A Vincentian who left here for ‘greener pastures’ and over the years gained an education, experience, training, and a bold worldview is barred from returning to her homeland to make a vital political contribution to the development of the country. She must first renounce what the neo-colonial constitution terms ‘allegiance to a foreign power.’ A white British citizen or even a Pakistani Taliban, with a minimum of one year of residence, becomes eligible to be elected to parliament and lead SVG. They do not have to renounce their British or Pakistani citizenship. Their right to be elected and serve flows from their countries belonging to the British Commonwealth. Most Vincentians living abroad have a connection to the homeland. They listen to local radio stations rather than those in the cities where they reside. They, like most immigrants, yearn to return home even if they never do. Their decision to acquire citizenship in a foreign land is mainly for transactional convenience rather than a desire to disconnect from home. The brain drain accounts for over 70 percent of skilled and trained personnel. Over the last 20 years, many acquired scholarships allowed for training in many fields. Many left as the nation cannot absorb all of them. The clause in our constitution that prohibits political participation by those who acquire citizenship in a foreign land is not a deeply entrenched clause. That is to say, a vote by a simple majority in parliament will allow us to change and correct this disservice to ourselves. Unfortunately, for narrow political reasons, we deter nationals living abroad with abundant skills and training from offering themselves. Over the years, Milton Cato, Grafton Isaacs, Vincent Beache, Glen Beache, ‘Scumbo’ John, Camillo Gonsalves, Godwin Friday, Fitz Bramble and yours truly have offered our service to the nation. Some of us were either born abroad or acquired citizenship in foreign lands. Many of
those listed have served or continue to serve the country credibly. Yet our parliamentarians, intent on making this critically important issue into ‘a political football,’ refuse to do the right thing. We cannot depend heavily on our diaspora for remittances, estimated to be tens of millions of dollars annually, disaster relief and other assistance and then deliberately lock them out of national political service. Something is radically wrong with this reality. We ought to change it to make better use of this vital asset. Another area that needs attention and change is how we transition from one government to the other following an election. Serious consideration should be given to an American-type transition. We do not need more than two months, as is the case in the USA, but surely no prime minister should have to scramble to remove his personal belongings from an official residence. A one-week grace period should become the practice. The current policy where the loser must get out of town before the sun rises has to end. There is a grace that must come with the office of the prime minister. Courtesy must be extended even after he demits office. The security needs of all former prime ministers and members of parliament should be assessed and addressed as need be. No long-standing elected member of the state apparatus should be left without a basic care package, a driver, medical care, etc. Our politics’ tribal, hyper-partisan nature prevents us from moving in this direction. Those in opposition and their supporters may argue strongly against these developments, especially if the sitting government proposes them. Many of us remember all too well the arguments against what was dubbed ‘Mitchell’s greedy bill.’ Much of what was argued against then has since been implemented with less fanfare. What needs to be done is for many of these issues to be developed in legislative committees that win bipartisan support. Another idea is to create a democratic good governance committee that is democratic and representative of society. This committee should be charged with the responsibility to observe our seascape and landscape to suggest ways in which we can make our democracy better and more caring. The prophet Micah implores us to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly. If we take his teachings to heart, we will come to the appreciation that policy should inform our politics and not the other way around. A much better SVG awaits us. All we have to do is try just a little harder. Send comments, criticisms & suggestions to jomosanga@gmail.com

SVG needs its own science university for a prosperous future SVG is one of the few countries that does not have its own university. This fact, alone, is a major factor why our country has failed to make much progress on the path to prosperity. The most prosperous countries in the world have their own universities, as they realised they have to educate their people to strengthen their economy. SVG’s number one resource is its people, which is why we need our own university. University education for our people is important for sustainable development in our country. The future and dreams of our children depend upon university education, to empower them to obtain long-term, high paid jobs in SVG and abroad. Whilst all forms of education are important to a country, it is university education that is crucial for sustainable development and moves a country forward. Wake up Youroumein! The Opposition in the House must call for the immediate repeal of the Public Health Act, and have the government reinstate and compensate all civil servants whose services were terminated without benefits accrued over the years. It is so unfair and unreasonable of a leadership who we thought had the populace at heart, but who by their actions proved to be heartless. Additionally, the Opposition must file an injunction in the High Court to force the government to repeal the Public Health Act and while they are at it, one also to stop the North

The Court, with independent judges, will produce a more favourable outcome based on law, testing whether our laws and due process having been violated in the two aforementioned issues.
Missed opportunity The message from this government from day 1 should have been to boost your immune system through: the provision of free vitamin C and D supplements to every educational institution, from pre-school to University; and encourage the use of ‘known’ local plants and therapies that have worked for eons. Before modern day generic medications, the main sources for treatment and healing was herbs and plants, including the bark and roots of some species. Doctors will confirm that many generic drugs have botanic origins … undisputable FACTS. The Good Book teaches that the ‘herbs and the leaves thereof are for the healing of the nations’. This country had covid under control until they resumed international flights and started to issue ‘vaccines’, the stats and dates are there to support the facts. In SVG, some of those who fell for the propaganda and took the ‘chook’ at their own risk, have already died; others are still suffering and some have miraculously recovered from deep vein thrombosis. The vaccine campaign is a FAILED and failing experiment akin to the Tuskegee experiment. And many will agree, that this ‘covid mess’ is ‘stinkin’ a long time now, and it is really OVERBEARING! Repeal the Public Health Act now!! Stop the quarry project yesterday!!! Encourage the nation to boost their immune system by setting a proper example. Contributed by: Donald De Riggs

Godfrey ‘Bobby’ Fraser, a Vincentian Literary icon.
MANY TIMES IN OUR HISTORY, we either miss or we ignore the fact that someone who lived and worked among us had passed to the great beyond. So in the midst of the lingering residue of this ‘revived’ Vincymas season 2022, (as it is being referred to), let us not forget that on Thursday 12th July, 2012 Godfrey ‘Bobby’ Fraser passed from this life to that ‘great beyond. Godfrey ‘Bobby’ Fraser was born on May 27th 1942 to Olive Lewis and Lyle Fraser in Rose Place, commonly known as Bottom Town. He grew up there, where he came in contact and interacted with many of the outstanding personalities who emerged out of the community. This interaction might well have been an influence that informed his literary work. Ten years is too short a period for us to forget the sterling contributions that this outstanding son of the Vincentian landscape has made to the sporting, civic, cultural and literary fraternities during his time he traversed his beloved St. Vincent and the Grenadines. And while this brief tribute seeks to highlight his literary work, a short insert about his other pastimes is instructive of the person we memorialize. “Bobby like his brother Rodway, was a founding member and staunch supporter of Saints Club. We were all in our early twenties, and working when the Club was founded, so we had some disposable income, so the Club occupied our free time by having a Club Room, and having Cricket, Football and Athletic Teams and also a Debating Team. ..” Chesley Saunders. But if the truth be told, ‘Bobby’ was perhaps best known for his playwriting,
with his work for radio standing foremost in its impact across social barriers. Amidst all the challenges and mood swings of the writer he was, ‘Bobby’ was a devoted family man who with his wife Janice, parented two children- Andrew and Nicole into adulthood. In summary, though, it will be safe to say that the cultural scene in SVG would be a lot worse off without the passing through its ranks of Bobby Fraser.
Bibliography Among Bobby’s contribution to the local literary landscape were works/plays written for video recording, the stage and radio. He is remembered for the play THEY NEED YOU MORE which focused on caring for pre-schoolers with AIDS, and was performed for direct video recording in 2008. His more memorable stage productions included: * IN THE SPIRIT OF KING JAJA — which formed part of SVG’s presentation at CARIFESTA; * THE MAGIC OF LOVE written and performed locally in 1993; * AS THE SUN RISES — written and performed at CARIFESTA 1995. And as referenced earlier in this article, perhaps his best and most remembered work was written and produced for radio. Among these productions were: * LIFE WITH MABEL — written/produced for the St. Vincent
volume of material that he wrote. Omitted, for example, is reference to the number of calypsos Bobby composed for the likes of the legendary Lloyd ‘Lord Hawke’ Providence and others. Many of these, some of which he wrote in collaboration with his writing colleague Chester Rogers, have withstood the test of time. Over the years, several Newspapers have done articles on Bobby Fraser’s progress and achievements. Their archives could be a valuable source of information on this outstanding giant of Vincentian Literature. May GODFREY TREVOR ‘BOBBY’ FRAZER forever occupy a priced place in the annals of the literary life, in particular, of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. THE STAGE IS SET for the finals of the 2022 Calypso Monarch Competition, scheduled for Victoria Park on July 3. Eleven finalists were selected from the show dubbed ‘Ting Nice Agen’, effectively the semi-final round of the competition. The eleven include one debutant, Damian ‘Boney Man’ Da Souza who, up to five years ago was still campaigning as a Junior Calypsonian. He won favour with the judges and was a tent favourite with his rendition of a song entitled, ‘Where de Prime Money Gone?’, a play on the government’s Pryme
Prograame which offered cash assistance to existing and potential entrepreneurs. Also of some significance is the inclusion of a single female, Sheena Collis, who got the judges’ nod with a number, “Ain’t Easier’. This is in stark contrast to the last time the competition was held in 2019, when it boasted five female contestants, one of who — Shaunelle Mc Kenzie — rose to become monarch. Pay more attention to Copyright ELLSWORTH HACKSAW, the local agent of the Eastern Caribbean Collective Organisation for Music Rights (ECCO), wants more people here to pay attention to copyright laws. He needs no convincing that the “information is out there,” but conceded that most of the population was not too concerned about Copyright. He recalled that the entity known as Windward Islands Broadcasting Service (WIBS) observed Copyright requirements. However, with the evolution in local radio that is now dominated by a proliferation of FM stations, Hacksaw noted that this was marked by a disregard for Copyright rules. Hacksaw emphasised that it is a “legal requirement” for persons using music at public functions or gatherings to get a licence, and that that licence should be obtained before any such exercises are done. “ECCO shouldn’t be running (down) people,” Hackshaw declared. Vincentian ECCO Director Lance ‘Da Vinci’ Chapman contended that the Copyright issue here is a “problem that has to be addressed.”
He urged artistes and composers here to secure the value of their works. Hackshaw and Chapman’s sentiments were expressed during a panel discussion in which they were joined by St. Lucia-based Keen Cotter — ECCO Officer-InCharge/Membership Officer. Cotter made known that ECCO officials were cognizant that Carnival provides the biggest platform for creators of music in St. Vincent, and that ECCO looked forward to greater cooperation from stakeholders. The ECCO panel agreed that Copyright matters affected everyone and they wanted stakeholders to know that compliance benefits the region. (WKA)

Advice
What a girlfriend!! Dear George, MY GIRLFRIEND is a 29-year-old virgin. She wants me to be her first but just would not allow me to do my job. Yet, she wants me to be the man to take her virginity and went as far as to say she will make me the father of her children. The only person I confided in about this was my best friend since childhood who happens to be a female. She told me I should be patient and promised to speak to my girlfriend. One day my friend came over to the house and was chatting with her about the situation and we were all laughing about it. I left them in the house and went to work. I got back about six hours later to find them in bed going at it. George this was the last thing I expected… my friend talked my girlfriend into having sex with her. I had no idea that my friend was bisexual. As it is now, she has robbed me of that opportunity to give that sexual experience to my girlfriend. Since that time, my girlfriend has not been showing much interest in having sex with me. Also, she has been spending loads of time on the phone with my friend and her new found lover. She is no longer interested in marriage. I wanted to find out how I could get my girl back so I spoke to my friend. She informed me that she had done
me a favour and that she cannot stop my girlfriend from wanting her. That, she said, should not bother me seeing that it was a woman she was after and not a man. She even invited me to swing with her and my girlfriend. What a mess I have found myself in. What do you say?
Still in Shock Dear Still in Shock, The impact of that first sexual experience is said to be long lasting and can heavily influence the quality of a relationship thereafter. Have a very serious conversation with your girlfriend. You need to hear from her what, if anything, she wants from you and the relationship. Further, she needs to be clear about her sexuality and probably some time alone may be useful to allow her enough time to be clear about what she wants. A conversation surrounding trust, commitment and infidelity needs to be had immediately.

Dear George,
Together you can make it Dear George,
Dear Solution Needed,
SINCE Covid, my husband lost his job and that has put a major burden on the relationship since we are not able to do the things we used to do. I don’t think he is doing enough to find work although he said he is. Imagine, he wants me to go out and work, this after we agreed I would at home and do the house work. We argue all the time about this. As a woman I need to do my hair regularly and my nails, etc. He does not have those things to worry about and he cannot understand that. I know a way I can get easy money but I do not think he would like it.
COVID-19 has had a negative impact on many families and have forced many to become creative in finding ways to make end meet. It was not your husband’s fault he lost his job and this should have been an opportunity for you to step up and give him your fullest support. Both of you need to put your heads together and see how you can stay afloat financially. Your hair, nails and other personal needs should have automatically taken second place to the more urgent needs such as bills, food etc. It is not too late to show your husband he did not make a mistake in choosing you as a partner.

Former Rugby President reviews tenure LEONARD MATHEWS, the former President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Rugby Union (SVGRU) was quick to offer his support to his successor — Dellon Durrant, who was elected Saturday, 18th June, at the Unions Annual general meeting. Mathews, who did not stand for re-election, held the post from 2019. Looking back on his tenure he said it came with some degree of challenges but overall he was happy he got to achieve some of his objectives. “I was pleased that I got the opportunity last
year to do four seven-aside tournaments and amazingly over 75 percent of the players were new to rugby and mostly young people. This is an indication that rugby had a future in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and I am particularly satisfied that I got some young players into the sport,” Matthews said. He also expressed, “I am very pleased with my term as president. I am glad I have got some young players into the sport. Another thing I should show great appreciation for, was to the other executive
members I worked along and the support I got from them who were always willing to assist.” On the downside he noted that the Covid-19 pandemic put spend to a number of activities his executive had planned. Ever mindful of the contact nature of rugby, Matthews said he and his executive acted accordingly in the prevailing circumstances. perspective’ THEON GORDON, feature speaker at the SVG Community College’s inaugural Sports Awards Ceremony held on Thursday, 23rd June, at the Hospitality and Maritime Training Institute at Diamond, wants to see a new perspective pursued as it relates to sports in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Gordon, the current Director of Technical Matters of the St Vincent Theon Gordon and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF), addressing the theme ‘Crafting a new Perspective’, advised that there needs to be a new perspective towards development and called for a reversal in the way we live. According to Gordon, “We are in a time when everything is a quick fix and everything is at our finger’s tips, no one wants to put in the hard work… As a result, we have become sedentary and lost in our screens…We have turned our backs to our way of living.” In support of his assessment he asked rhetorically: “What’s the difference between climbing a jungle gym and climbing a tree? What is different between swimming in a pool and swimming at the beach and the difference between running on an elliptical and running on our roads? In order to change the perspective, Gordon called on persons who are engaged in sporting activities to “create your masterpiece, which is yourself.” Toward this end he emphasized, “Understand that the only person you can control is yourself…You have to become someone before you can be something…Never try to be better than others… Try to be the best version of yourself.” Additionally, Gordon believed that for any transformation to be made in Vincentian sports, there has to be a greater national focus, but bemoaned, “Vincentian administrators, sports men and women are not ready to be successful.” And while he acknowledged that this country has produced some of the best politicians, doctors, lawyers, accountants and other professionals in other fields, he pondered: “When are we going to produce the same level of professionalism in the field of sport?” Calling out all stakeholders to get on their act and turn a new page in sports, Gordon implored, “Too often we are focused on the nouns… it’s time for us to be verbs.”

Ebbs and flows THE BANGLADESH-WEST INDIES SERIES now shifts to the T/20 and One Day Internationals. The T/20 action unfolds at the Windsor Park in Dominica tomorrow Saturday, at 1:30. The second follows on Sunday, same time, same venue. Then the camp moves to Providence in Guyana for the third, where the three One day Internationals will also be staged. I join the cynics in trivialising the West Indies victory in the Test series. Persons might have been happier if West Indies had continued the slide toward further humiliation and had succumbed to the visitors. But the Caribbean is a crude place; we seem to revel in the absurd. There is added pressure on our sports personality to live up to the standards. People don’t appreciate that the gap between teams in and given sport continues to narrow. No one can be taken for granted, or treated as a push over. Bangladesh has shown their willingness to put up a fight, no matter whom their opponent. So the West Indies team management has to keep ahead of the game. When the West Indies won the two Test series in Bangladesh last year, it came as a shock to many, including the Bangladeshis. The West Indies had gone into Bangladesh with a new look squad and having faltered at the shorter version, Bangladesh was anticipating a clean sweep of that tournament. Things turned around, based on the Nkrumah Bonner and Kyle Mayers combination. Bangladesh were confident enough to declare in their second innings giving the West Indies what was considered an improbable run chase, i.e. as far as the West Indies record stood on the Asian sub-continent. Mayers has since ebbed and flowed as a Test cricketer, but he seems to have cultivated an appetite for runs against Bangladesh. Many pundits have dismissed the T/20 version of cricket, regarding it (swing yo bat) as hit or miss action. It is turning out that the shorter version serves as a training ground for Test cricketers. If you look at the recent performances of Johnny Bairstow, you will appreciate the impact of T/20 cricket. It prepares you for different aspects of the game which one can resort to at any time. St. Vincent and the Grenadines will have to find out from the West Indies Cricket Board what the requirements for hosting international matches are. When our facilities were not as ‘refined’ as they are today, we hosted One Day Internationals almost on a yearly basis. That was with all the deficiencies which St. Vincent and the Grenadines had resulting in complaints of inadequate hotel rooms, and absence of basic amenities. We know some groundwork is needed, and substantial repairs will be required to the Arnos Vale facility. The wires in the pavilion have rusted, and it will take a big effort (finance included) to bring the facility up to scratch. But those measures ought to be done not just for the sake of international cricket, but also with our cricketers in mind. The performance of our athletes at the recent Carifta Games is evidence that once the conditions are right, Vincentians can rise to the occasion. Caribbean people have to appreciate what they’re up against, and return their game to that level of pride which we have known.

He posited that “as a rule of NEMO, all overhanging trees along the highway and byway need to be pruned” and that NEMO should be more equipped to deal with those kinds of situations. It was no ‘small tree’ that fell on its own volition at Belle Isle last week Thursday.

BUS DRIVER IS HOMICIDE #22 THIS COUNTRY has recorded its 22nd homicide for the year. That statistic was so updated when Kishorn Jackson, 31-yearold driver of Rockies, who is said to be originally from Rillan Hill, was shoot dead at about 8:45p.m on Monday 27th June, 2022, in Brighton. According to a police release, Jackson and two other men were walking along the Brighton Public Road after Jackson had returned the bus he drives to its owner. While walking along the road, they heard gunshots. The men reportedly ran and sought refuge Kishorn Jackson did not live to ‘have his day in court’. (Facebook photo)
in a nearby supermarket. When they thought it was safe to leave the supermarket they observed that Jackson was not with them. They went in search of him and found him lying in a pool of blood in front of the supermarket. The police were immediately notified. Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene by the District Medical Officer (DMO). While the police have mounted an investigation and stated preliminarily that they have not discerned a motive for the killing, a resident of Rookies reminded THE VINCENTIAN that Jackson was awaiting trial on two counts of attempted murder, and one count of conspiracy to commit
robbery. The resident prefaced his reminder by saying that he did not intend to make any connection between Jackson’s death and what he had to say. A search of our archives revealed that Jackson was charged in connection with the shooting of two people - Errol Hinson and Veron Williams during an attempted robbery of a Lotto booth at Heritage Square, Kingstown, which occurred on March 15, 2018. He was charged with attempting to murder Hunson and Williams and also charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and was awaiting trial.
