‘Marshall is my hire’ Without stating specifically what Marshall said on local radio, Gonsalves acknowledged that Marshall’s remarks were “unacceptable,” adding that he was

“trying to make a point, but he said it badly.” The Foreign Affairs Minister also said that, while the Chateaubelair native is yet to sign a contract for his appointment, “he was aware that he was being considered.” Still, Gonsalves insisted that Marshall “will serve this Diaspora and this country (well). “Sehon Marshall is my first hire,” the minister said. “I’ve served here in New York; and I want to upgrade the level of representation, and I believe Sehon Marshall can help to upgrade.” He, however, acknowledged that since the departure of erstwhile Deputy New York Consul General Cyril ‘Scorcher’ Thomas, Augustus’ predecessor, the New York Consulate has been under “some scrutiny.” In the aftermath of the Consulate scandal, Opposition Leader and New Democratic Party (NDP) President, Arnhim Eustace, had called for a complete shake-up of the office.
