ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINEs on Thursday, 16th September, 2021 recorded its 14th COVID19 related death.

Finance Minister Camillo Gonsalves confirmed this with a posting on Facebook:

“The cluster of COVID19 infections in Choppins that claimed one life last week has now claimed another person, who was closely associated with the first death.”

The number of COVID-19 deaths had remained at 12, dating back to May until

September 13 when the 13th was recorded. The two recent deaths arise from a recent significant increase in COVID-19 positive cases.

Recent figures According to the Ministry of Health, fifty-

four (54) new COVID-19 positive cases were reported from four hundred and twenty-two (422) samples processed on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, resulting in a positivity rate of 12.8%.

There were six new recoveries over the reporting period.

Two hundred and sixty-nine (269) cases were active. There have been two thousand, six hundred and thirteen (2,613) cases of COVID19 and two thousand, three hundred and thirty-one (2,331) recoveries recorded since March 2020.

Of the two thousand, six hundred and thirteen (2,613) cases on record, one hundred and seventy-seven (177) cases were listed as

imported and ten (10) import-related.

The recent dramatic increase in the number of positive COVID-19 cases came as Health Authorities confirmed the presence of the Delta, Mu and Gamma variants.

Health Authorities, therefore, have recommended ‘strict enforcement and compliance with all protocols’.

FLOW services fully restored in communities above the Dry River - zero-rated billing from April to September TELECOMMUNICATIONS PROVIDER FLOW has completed restoration of its services in the communities north of the Rabacca Dry River following the eruption of the La Soufrière Volcano on April 9.

The network infrastructure north of the Rabacca Dry River suffered extensive damage but after weeks of grueling work, Flow is reporting that all services including broadband, landline, television, and mobile are now fully functional.

Restoration work began on August 3, after the all-clear to travel beyond Georgetown was issued. The company replaced more than 1,400 meters of cable and critical network components in just over a month.

Flow Country Manager, Wayne Hull has said all customers from Orange Hill to Fancy will have had their bills zero-rated from April 9, and this facility will be extended through to the end of September.

“We empathize with the heavily impacted communities closest to La Soufriere, especially those who were further affected by the Lahar flows and flooding which followed the eruptions. We would like to see these communities return to the vibrance they have always possessed,” he said.

“In that vein, as a responsible corporate citizen, Flow has absorbed more than EC$2.5 million to ensure our customers can have some measure of relief as they put their lives back together while having the essential services of mobile and fixed connectivity at no cost,” he added.

A customer from Point Village shared: “It was hard to come back up from the shelter with no TV, but the technicians came, and I feel little better to have back the service and the ease up on the bill makes plenty sense.”

Meanwhile, Flow is also continuing service upgrades by migrating customers still on the

old copper network to the advanced HFC network.

“With an upgrade of this magnitude, customers would be surprised to hear that comes to them absolutely free. Teacher charged with obstructing Prime Minister Stories by HAYDN HUGGINS ABOUT a month after secondary school teacher Adriana King was slapped with four charges, in relation to violating the Public Order Act, she is accused of obstructing Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves.

King, a teacher at the St. Vincent Grammar School, re-appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on Friday, September 10 after being re-arrested the previous day. She is now charged with, that on August 5, 2021 in

Lawyer expected cop to be charged

The charges stemmed from an incident, during a protest action in front of the Kingstown Vegetable Market on Thursday, August 9.

John pleaded not guilty to the charges during his appearance before Senior Magistrate Rickie Burnett on Tuesday.

But Bacchus-Baptiste told the Court she expected to see a charge of attempted murder brought against PC Verrol Sam, as her client was put in a choke hold during that incident, and

could have died. She said that John had to be taken to the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital where he received medical attention, and is still suffering from the effects of what happened.

In a letter dated September 13, 2021, and addressed to Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Sejilla McDowall, Bacchus-Baptiste called on Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, who is also Minister of National Security; Commissioner of Police Colin John; and the Director of Public Prosecutions to: immediately, unreservedly condemn and abolish any chokeholding of citizens by police; investigate and issue maximum charges against PC Sam, leading to his dismissal from the police force; liaise with the Honourable Attorney

General to adequately compensate Carly John for his injuries and loss; release a statement reinforcing the provisions of the Police Act and Regulations, demanding that all police officers strictly adhere or face the consequences; condemn the spate of spurious crimes levied against protesters for exercising the right to demonstrate — criminal charges must not be used as a means to intimidate and stifle lawful protest; and acknowledge receipt of this letter, and effectively respond to it within seven days hereafter.

In the matter involving the senator’s husband, the Senior Magistrate has ordered disclosure by October 19, and the matter has been adjourned to January 26, 2022.

Woman charged with obstructing police Thirty-five-year-old Sherry Ann Caine of Georgetown will return to the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on January 24, 2022 for trial on a charge of obstructing a police officer while executing his duties.

The matter stems from a protest action in front of the Kingstown Vegetable Market on Thursday, September 9.

Caine is charged, with, that on September 9, 2021 she obstructed Police Constable 700 Verrol Sam, he being a police officer acting Sherry Ann Caine

in due execution of his duties.

Caine pleaded not guilty during a brief appearance before Senior Magistrate Rickie Burnett at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Police actions too excessive

THE ACTIONS on the part of the police present at the protest action in Kingstown on September 9 were excessive.

“I mean, you had half of the police force in Kingstown on Thursday,” Leader of the Opposition, Dr Godwin Friday said on the September 13 edition of the New Times radio program.

According to Friday, the protest was a peaceful one, however police behaved as if those individuals were behaving violently.

He was referring to the protest organized by the Public Service Union as part of the industrial action taken to oppose the policy by the government for front

line, or public sector workers to get the COVID-19 vaccination.

“Traffic was allowed to flow because that was what we decided would happen,” he contended.

There were a number of arrests made, including one protestor who was beating a drum, Carly John — husband of Opposition Senator Shefforn John — and Adriana King.

“That show of force was obscene in the face of what was a very peaceful, uplifting, wonderful exhibition or expression of our democratic rights by the people of this country,” Friday said.

The opposition leader said that the people

made the decision to have a peaceful protest and then to end with prayer.

“I thought it important that we had such a show of solidarity and prayer in Kingstown,” Friday said.

He commended those who turned up saying that they were deliberate and disciplined and ensured that the message was not lost although the police were out in their numbers.

There was a lot of provocation, Friday added.

“Police were seeking to stop persons from playing drums; drums that you can play at a cricket match, funeral and that we have used in

the past in previous actions.”

Similarly, he said that police tried to prevent protestors from using bullhorns.

Opposition MP makes vaccination appeal MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT for West Kingstown Daniel Cummings is appealing to Vincentians to get vaccinated to prevent becoming seriously sick or dying.

Cummings, speaking on the New Times Program last Monday, said that people who want to make a choice of whether they should take the vaccine, ought to be supported. “I encourage as we have been doing from the very beginning, those who have no health reason to avoid it, make yourself available for the vaccine and give yourself a chance of not becoming seriously ill or dying from COVID-19,” said Cummings.

The long standing MP said that he is disappointed that SVG ranks the lowest in the OECS in terms of the percentage of vaccinated persons and he pointed to the wrong approach of the authorities as a factor. He also blasted the government for not being serious about the pandemic, as public officials are seen in public without masks.

Cummings highlighted the impact the pandemic is having on the economy including the tourism sector.

He said that in his opinion, all of the evidence points to a big advantage in taking the COVID-19 vaccine in that one is less likely to become seriously ill, which is so from all the statistics. “If that is the only reason in my humble opinion, that is sufficient to encourage people to take

it,” said the MP. Daniel Cummings “Of course we continue to support those who believe that there must be a free choice and there is absolutely no reason for the government to make it mandatory. Right to peaceful protest: Lifeblood of democracy SOME PERSONs will condemn this publication for repeating certain statements. We make no apology for this for we consider it essential to the welfare of the citizens and peace and tranquility of the nation.

Especially when one of those statements reads something like: Citizens of a free and democratic society have a right to protest.

It is nothing short of an affront to this right that has been enjoyed by our people since Adult Suffrage, when persons become targets of police searches, arrests and subsequent charges to be answered in a Court of Law, because they exercise their right to protest.

Not since the teachers’ marches/demonstrations of 1975 have protestors, rallied in a cause of protecting the rights and interest of workers, been met with arrests and charges by the state; when the police force have been seemingly unleashed on those who show dissent.

As this article is being prepared, at least ten ‘protestors’ have been arrested and charged — charges inclusive of being ‘organisers’ of and participants in illegal protests. Further, the lady charged with inflicted injury on the Prime Minister was rearrested and slapped with an additional charged.

Peaceful protest is a knot on a democratic balloon; the way knots hold the air inside the balloon, the same way protests uphold the spirit of democracy.

For the most part, save and except when the Prime Minister was regrettably injured and some protestors suffered abuse at the hands of the constabulary, the protests here have not given any indication that they were or are threats to national security. Maybe the Ministry of National Security and the Royal Police SVG Force know otherwise?

It is worth noting that countries around the world, St. Vincent and the Grenadines not excluded, whose prime concern is the welfare of their citizens — e.g. the protection of human rights, sustaining the soul of democracy and

advocating the integrity and dignity of their people - always hold sacred the right to protest and their people’s right to express dissent without fear of reprisals.

Many international treaties, to which this country is a party, contain clear articulation of the right to protest, to safeguard the interest of human rights/human beings in general. This is not different from what our Constitution enshrines.

Freedom of speech and expression (e.g. peaceful public demonstration) is a fundamental right given to its citizen against the state in all open and democratic countries.

History is wont to repeats itself. If we ignore the movements of the past that inspired modern protest and don’t take the instruction from these into a conversation about the current state of affairs here, the current peaceful protests and the reactions they have caused, are likely in time, to become not so peaceful.

Admittedly, there is a thin line between peaceful protests and riots; a seemingly inconspicuous action by either protestor or police can turn the tables; each side should understand the difference and not act in alee of its rights.

All the fundamental rights are, however, not absolute; one should exercise his/her rights without curtailing others’ individual rights.

And until it threatens the security of the state, it would be unconstitutional to restrain the people from their right to protest.

Peaceful protest is a first step towards freedom; we have to consider it as a powerful weapon for protecting and exercising our rights towards safeguarding the nation, its people and for the ceaseless welfare of the society.

Since that time, it seems that the politicians of the region have been able to influence the cricket authorities to keep Gayle in their good books. And that has continued up to today.

Life is short and death is sure THE MANY events and incidents in and around the world are but a reminder that life is short and death is sure.

The world is currently battling with the COVID-19 and various variants. There is rise in crimes and political unrest. Earthquakes, man-made and natural disasters are occurring around the world. These aforementioned have and continue to result in many deaths.

Sad, but true, very few are taking stock of their lives and realize the brevity of it. So, we often

take things for granted and live our lives as though we are ‘eternal’.

But we are sleeping with death and one day the reality of it will hit, as the Bible says in Hebrew 9: 27, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgment”.

It is so sad. We spend so much time pulling down one another and creating enemies over few trivial things, amongst which is politics. I guess we fail to realize that while we occupy our time and energy on these things,

we could be visited by death. Sometimes it is someone close to us or even a member of our family.

While we ought not to neglect the issues affecting us, the energy we spend on these things on a daily basis is indeed alarming, to say the least. Would it not be nice if we spend half of those times focusing on something spiritual?

Social media is flooded each day with so many negatives and hate; we wonder what is wrong with this world.

I would encourage us

to look upward. Let us be prepared for death which can come to our home unannounced. Let us recognize the times we are living in and realize that world events are but a reminder that death is a certainty. It is therefore, for us to be prepared and also live in peace and harmony.

Added to that, let us not take our lives and each other for granted. Let us appreciate one another.

Let us seek, by God’s help, to stop the hatred and replace it with love.

May God bless us all.

Teachers and the vaccine I HOPE THAT the current situation involving the Teachers’ Union and the government does not get out of hand, and so I urge the teachers to get vaccinated. Teachers who refuse to be vaccinated should see that it is irresponsible for even one of them to place at risk the lives of their students. As I see it, this is not different from a case of having unprotected sex in the ongoing AIDS epidemic.

While I agree it is a personal choice, I also recognize that the risk involved in not taking the vaccine is significant.

That is why I say that the Minister of Education has to do what is best for the entire school population

— teachers and students.

I am firmly in agreement that if some teachers do not want to take the vaccine, then testing should become necessary for ensuring no breach of the containment and prevention of the virus entering the school system. I hope that the impasse does not result in a situation in which we have to resort to online education.

Teachers who oppose the vaccine should bear in mind that everyone is trying to stay safe and do what is best for their families and those under their care. Teachers, be safe and stay well. Take the vaccine!

A LOOK AT GOD and his prethought for man. First of all God is fire, water and air, and combined energy. Paul reminded us that our God is a consuming fire. These sources: water, air and the extended sun, moon, stars, outer planets and earth, are for our survival.

Imagine for a moment, if all water, the sea dried up, where would life be and all our technologies?

God created many kinds of gas and substances in the magnetic field and live in them to sustain life globally.

The sun is full of magnetic gas which sustains the moon, stars and all other planets.

David reminded us of it this way: “The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s but the earth have He has given to the children of men” Ps. 115:16. Now the earth emerged out of water and remain in water to this day. “And the earth was without form, and void…..” Gen. 1:2. There was no water upon the earth for a period of years; no life, no man: Gen. 2:5. Then God established his

irrigation system as in V.6. Trees and plants, birds and animals emerged from the creative energy of God, but no man as yet.

Then God said, “Let us make man (how) in our own image, after our likeness (why) and let them have supreme authority over the environment of earth and sea”, Gen. 1:26. That was the frame of mind God had for man before he created and made man from the earth. “And the Lord God formed man out of the dust of the ground and breathe into his nostrils the breath of life…..” Gen. 2:67. Nowhere do we see in the mind of God that He had/have a plan for man to go up to His heaven to live with him or to holiday with him.

Religion is like a drug used by the power of evil to change the minds of God’s people from having authority over planet earth and making mankind believe that they must prepare to die and go to heaven.

So, you can take the COVID-19 vaccine, die, and go to heaven.

Nurses display courage under pressure to protest Introduction THE ATTEMPTS by the Public Service Union to plunge this country into chaos and disfunction even in the most challenging times in recent years have failed.

Their call for protests on the streets of Kingstown, but most interestingly their call for medical personnel to withdraw their services for 4 days had many right-thinking persons questioning the call of the Union and the judgement of their leaders. One leading member of the nursing fraternity stated publicly that she would love if ALL nurses withdrew their services for the 4-day period.

The call for a withdrawal of service by nurses during a pandemic, as countries around us experience situations that have overwhelmed their health system to the point of crippling them, have been widely described as being irresponsible and reckless. The leadership of the Public Service Union, saw no difficulty in advancing such a call, and those opposed to vaccines used every opportunity to stir up emotions using conspiracy theories, misinformation and flat-out lies. The nurses were fed a barrage of mis-information regarding the regulation, a pretext used as the catalyst to promote the protest action, with the mischaracterisation of it being antidemocratic and anti-freedom being the major narrative. The health authorities braced for the worst, putting contingencies in place in preparation for the protest action by nurses, even as Comrade Ralph urged the nurses to show up to work. Many services including elective surgeries were suspended at the MCMH and other health facilities for the time period of the industrial action. In the meantime, the draft regulation that was touted as the source of protest was published for public consultations and comments from stakeholders. The Public Service Union through their legal advisors has indicated that it intends to take the government to court over the regulation, but has not stated whether they submitted any comments to the AG’s chambers. It begs the question that many are asking: Is the regulation really the issue behind the actions proposed by the PSU?

ULP policies adversely affecting Vincentians ON MAY 25, 2020, protests erupted in the United States of America after a video went viral where it was seen that a white police officer pressed his knees to the neck of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, lying on the ground, forcing his face on the pavement until he was unresponsive.

During the ordeal he cried, “I can’t breathe”. ‘I can’t breathe’ became the chant during protests in the USA and around the world, including St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner died in New York after a police officer put him in a prohibited chokehold while arresting him. A chokehold is when someone places an arm around the neck which restricts breathing, and puts pressure on the sides of the neck to slow the blood flowing through two large arteries to render the person unconscious.

In the United States of America, there are two neck restraints that police-reform activists say should be prohibited: the chokehold, which restricts breathing, and the carotid hold, which limits blood flow to the brain. The use of either can render a person unconscious and can be lethal.

The questions is, do the police authorize the use of the chokehold in St. Vincent and the Grenadines?

During the protest in Kingstown on Thursday, 9th September, 2021, we had a similar situation to that of Mr. Garner. We saw, Mr. Carly John, husband of opposition Senator, Shevorn John, placed in a chokehold by a police officer. From videos that were shown on social media, we saw that Mr. John was in distress. We believe he was crying, “I can’t breathe.” Undoubtedly, Mr. John had difficulties breathing, at one point he had to push his hands into his mouth in an attempt to clear the air passage.

Most people were appalled when they saw what had happened to Mr. John, an opposition senator’s husband, but that has been the modus operandi of the Unity Labour Party (ULP) regime. For twenty (20) years, the ULP regime has wrapped its tentacles around the necks of Vincentians. Most Vincentians continue to live in fear of political victimization, a weapon used by the ULP regime against persons who are perceived to be their opponents.

Recently, most citizens have become concerned about their constitutional rights and freedoms based on the actions of the authority. We think about: Adriana King, Kenson King, Colin Graham, Tyrone James, Joseph Da Silva, John Mofford, Rohan Simmons and Robert ‘Patches’ Knights.

Moreover, the ill-advised policies of the ULP regime and the mismanagement of the country’s economy have created severe hardship for Vincentians thus, creating an environment which makes it extremely difficult for them to survive.

They are having difficulties sending their children to school, they can’t pay their bills, most of the homes are without internet, cost of living has skyrocketed, unemployment is rampant and exorbitant registration school fees stands for the new

academic year.

The unemployment rate in St. Vincent and the Grenadines stands at 25 percent according to the IMF. That was before the COVD-19 pandemic and the eruption of La Soufriere. This is worse than it was in 2001, when the ULP came to power. At that time, it stood at 20.9 percent. Today, the youth 15-24 years, unemployment rate is estimated to be a staggering 46 percent. We recall during the 2001 general elections campaign, the ULP promised the youth that they would have provided thousands of jobs, quality jobs; they are still waiting for those jobs. They are at home frustrated.

Further, under the ULP, poverty has increased. Research has shown that poverty is linked with negative conditions such as: substandard housing, homelessness, inadequate nutrition and food insecurity, inadequate child care, lack of access to health care, unsafe neighborhoods, and under-resourced schools which adversely impact our nation’s children. Those conditions can be identified in this country and are severely affecting most Vincentians.

The report for the 2018 poverty assessment has not been released to the public by the government but was made public by Members of the Opposition last year. This generated much public interest and discussion.

At that time, members of the government responded that the report was not yet complete.

However, we did get a peep into the report. Last year, Mr. Cummings presented findings to the general public of the Poverty Assessment Report. It painted a damning picture of poverty in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The report concluded that poverty in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is worse than when the ULP gained power in 2001. It stated that poverty in St. Vincent and the Grenadines had moved from 30.2% of the population in 2008 to 36.1 % in 2018. And the indigence level had moved from 2.9% to 11.3% in the country of 110,000 people. The government denied knowledge of the report and said the poverty study was incomplete.

Agriculture once provided 20 percent of our GDP. Now it struggles to reach 3 percent. For twenty (20) years, the ULP has failed to remove the blacklisting of St. Vincent and the Grenadines from selling fish into the EU. Our balance of trade in agriculture is the worst it has ever been, while many key crops are in decline, many farms that once produced bananas are now covered in bush and are unproductive. There has not been an agricultural census in over 20 years, so the ULP doesn’t even know where our farmers are, what they are growing, how can they help them to improve their yields or even what land is available.

The ULP’s complacency after twenty (20) years in power, stops our fishing industry and agriculture from growing and creating jobs for our people. The New Democratic Party has an effective plan for jobs and growth in the economy of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Teachers: Important to Development

“Children today are tyrants. They contradict their parents, gobble their food, and tyrannize their teachers.” Socrates (469–399 BC) Greek philosopher in Athens, Socratic Method of Inquiry & Instruction TEACHERS ARE IMPORTANT for development – period! And they do play a major role in youth development. Their responsibilities are quite challenging to say the least. They multi-task as educators, mentors, models, coaches, disciplinarians ... and the list goes on.

Many will testify that it very often appears to be such a thankless job. But the rewards received are often intrinsic ... and that is often enough to keep them going beyond the call of duty. We commend them. We thank them for the significant role that they continue to play in our development.

It is probably timely to invite the reader to return to the quotation that was used to introduce this week’s article. Revisit it. Munch on it. Imbibe the motivation that those few words bring from centuries past. It would almost seem as though Socrates (469399 BC), the great philosopher, was writing about today’s society. And so, we pause to reflect on one of the old sayings, “The more things change, the more they remain the same”. We are in a different time, and a different geographic space, but the debate about the generation gap continues. And modern-day adults utter the same complaints as did Socrates. Many parents, teachers, and concerned adults would identify with the truth that is captured in those words ... and be encouraged by the fact that they are not alone in the struggle.

Today’s teachers complain bitterly about the lack of discipline that appears to be so very evident in many of our classrooms. Over the years our education system has slowly moved away from physical discipline in the schools. And that appears to have given children the wrong idea that they can say and do anything and not face any negative consequences for their indiscretion and/or rudeness. This should not be the case. And while this writer is totally opposed to children being abused, there is danger in going to the other extreme; where children grow up not understanding or appreciating that there are negative consequences to their “bad behaviour”.

The modern-day teachers are trained to engage in behaviour modification practices where children can be disciplined without being struck.

Unfortunately, there are teachers who appear to have thrown their hands in the air, abdicating their responsibility, and allowing the students to do whatever they want. This is a recipe for disaster. This is a formula for anarchy.

Children need to understand and appreciate that teachers are in control during those periods when they are at school. Teachers must accept that responsibility. And children must be made to give in to their authority.

Failure to maintain such order and discipline will result in chaos. Some teachers have been accosted by angry parents when they sought to lead children along the right path. Such parents do their children a serious disservice when they react in such a manner. This is especially so when the parents exhibit such undesirable behaviours as their children are going through adolescence. Such youths must never conclude that their parents or

guardians can bulldoze teachers into submission. They must never give their wards the impression that they will put teachers “on the back foot”. As parents we must be forever conscious of what we teach when we are not teaching. Our conversations and criticisms (especially when unfounded) could encourage our wards to disrespect teachers and school administrators; thereby worsening the situations in and around our institutions of learning.

Teachers are important to development. We commend the many who selflessly go beyond the call of duty. They work long hours and exert a tremendous amount of energy to make sure that they provide their students with the best teaching/learning environment possible. Some of these said teachers appear to be the only listening ears that some youths have.

We, members of society, must endeavour to protect and preserve their authority and their dignity. Teaching is a most noble profession. Many will be conscious of the fact that they will never be paid what they are truly worth.

However, they press on with a deep commitment to adding value to the lives of those that they have been blessed with the honour and privilege of imparting knowledge and wisdom; sometimes sharing life experiences that motivate their wards to pursue academic excellence and high civic responsibilities.

It would be remiss of me if I neglected to highlight the significant role that Sunday School and Sabbath School teachers also play in this regard.

Many will make the tremendous sacrifice to prepare lessons on a regular basis. They expect no monetary or material gain. They press on in service to the Lord, their church assembly, and their society. Many will testify of the incredible blessings that they derive from doing so. They learn even as they pause to teach. And they develop a deep sense of appreciation and a feeling of accomplishment as they realise the significant contribution that they continue to make to their students’ development in particular and the society in general. They leave a legacy that is seared in the minds and consciousness of their students. They can testify that it is not what they get from such priceless voluntary service ... but what they become. By pausing to influence the minds of the next generation they soar to new heights of joy and satisfaction. They are tremendously blessed as they pause to be a blessing. And we thank them for doing so.

We do not have to wait for “Teachers’ Appreciation Day” to commend and thank those teachers who have such a positive influence on the lives of others.

We do not have to await any special day to thank those who are now in the trenches (sometimes tired and frustrated) playing a significant role in fortifying our children for the battles that lie ahead. We thank them for the significant role they play in development. And we also remember those who are now retired and, in the sunset of their years, can reflect on the beauty that they have helped to create in others. They, too, continue to play a significant role in our development.

What will SVG taxpayers get back from the failed LIAT THE ULP regime pumped tens of millions of dollars into LIAT over many years. Now that LIAT has collapsed, what will the SVG taxpayer get back from the ULP regime?

LIAT seems to have been failing from the day it was created.

Constantly relying on government financial handouts, LIAT was never financially stable. Yet, the ULP regime kept recklessly pumping millions of taxpayers’ money into it, even though it was clearly not a viable business.

Surely this taxpayers’ money that was wasted should be repaid to SVG taxpayers?

The relationship between LIAT and its shareholder governments mirrored that of a drug addict and his drug suppliers. For decades, LIAT had been managed poorly and was a financial failure; its shareholder governments kept on pumping millions of dollars into it to cover that debt.

LIAT should have been forced into rehabilitation to get off its addiction to government bailouts and properly restructure, to run efficiently and create a profit.

In the Searchlight newspaper on 22/06/07, Senator Allen Chastanet, St. Lucia’s Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, was quoted as saying ‘The one thing that LIAT has done

consistently in its 51 years of existence is lose money.’ He was adamant that SVG and the other major shareholders of the airline would not be receiving any more assistance from his country.

LIAT amassed a huge debt of over 200 million dollars since being privatized in 1996-97. It was clear, even to the man or woman in the street, that LIAT was badly run and always losing money, and would be a very bad financial investment. Yet, regional governments kept bizarrely giving it millions and millions of dollars.

The prime ministers of these shareholder governments must be held accountable for the incompetent governance of LIAT and loss of taxpayers’ money. It was like throwing money down the drain.

Thousands of households in SVG live in poverty, without mains water and electricity, and their children often go to bed hungry. SVG taxpayers’ money should be helping these poor households. The poor of SVG should not be neglected.

The Leader of SVG Green Party, Warrant Officer Ivan O’Neal BSc (hons), MSc, MBA, says that SVG needs factories and our own science and technology university. The money wasted on LIAT would have been

better spent on building factories and our own university in SVG. This would have created a manufacturing sector for our economy and thousands of new jobs.

The ULP regime has created a high level of unemployment and low grade education system in SVG. The millions of dollars wasted on LIAT could have been better spent investing in young people’s training and a world-class, free education system or raising the income of the poor to cope with disastrous ULP regime taxes such as VAT. The health system in SVG is inadequate — even the PM flies abroad when he needs medical treatment. The poor cannot afford to do this. The millions of dollars wasted on LIAT could have been better spent investing

in a world-class, free health system for our people.

Warrant Officer Ivan O’Neal, BSc (Hons) MSc, MBA says that chucking SVG taxpayers’ money into the ‘black hole’ that was LIAT was not good value for money and was short-sighted and immoral.

SVG Green Party calls on this government to stop wasting taxpayers’ money on stupid things. Give the people back the money the ULP regime wasted on LIAT.

God save our gracious King

by ANTHONY STEWART, PhD AS A LOYAL subject of the Empire I have waited with great anticipation for the coronation of the Crown Prince, and to sing and play the National Anthem with renewed gusto. He himself must have been looking forward to that great day also. Undoubtedly, he would have done his best to prepare himself for the expected role.

He availed himself of what he thought was the best education to prepare him for the role. He gained much knowledge of World Affairs perhaps with Diplomatic postings and other overseas assignments. His shortcomings, however is his relationship with women and the scandals brought on the Monarchy as a result. These caused many to look at the Dynasty with disdain.

He hoped that time would heal this wound and many would forget his indiscretions if he

maintained a dignified silence on the matter.

Apparently, there were only two pathways to the Crown: 1. Retirement of the Monarch 2. Death of the Monarch Although the Monarch is aging, there appears to be no intention of retiring. Even though the popularity of the Monarch is waning, there is still substantial loyal following. For many, this is the only Monarch they know.

They like the reassuring voice in an unstable and changing world. Possible onset of senility is not important as, at that age, the role of the Monarch is merely ceremonial. All important duties were allocated to others. The main role is in Public Relations: Look good, and sound good.

Cultivate a positive attitude of subjects towards the Dynasty.

Death of the Monarch is unthinkable as many question whether the son

can keep the empire together. As long as there is life there is hope.

Under no circumstances should he follow in the footsteps of his namesake Charles 1, the only Monarch that was beheaded. He reigned for 24 years (1625 -1649). He felt that he had a God given right to rule the Kingdom and that he was above the law. He had much difficulty with Parliament and did not think he needed their approval for spending.

He also had difficulties with the church. He imposed unpopular taxes, and his actions were described as tyrannical.

Barbados, known to us as Little England will become a republic next month. We, however, must plan a big celebration for the coronation of our Crown Prince whenever it happens, sooner rather than later. God save the King!

PM tours medical cannabis facilities

A DELEGATION led by Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves toured several medicinal cannabis facilities on September 10, the second such tour organized since the establishment of a medicinal marijuana industry.

The delegation, which also consisted of officials from the Medical Cannabis Authority (MCA) toured various facilities and farms covering all the stages of the industry, between Kingstown and Spring.

According to Gonsalves, the tour highlighted the entire process involved in the medicinal marijuana industry from seed to sale.

“And when we visited Rivulet, we toured

various sites that are part of the process,” the prime minister said, and indicated that the tour included visits to various farms where they were able to observe the processes involved from planting and cloning.

Dr. Gonsalves indicated that the industry was at the stage where the business of the exportation of product in significant commodities, has the involvement of various companies. He expressed satisfaction that there was a plan within the diversification process to create jobs and generate wealth.

“This is a venture worthy of the effort of the government, public servants and the Parliament and all the people of St Vincent and

the Grenadines, including the traditional farmers who are an important part of the chain,” said Gonsalves.

Among the stops made, was at a drying/packaging and storage facility in Kingstown, followed by a pharmaceutical facility.

The third stop on the tour saw the delegation visit the site of a manufacturing facility at Arnos Vale under containing extraction capacity, which is expected to become operational later this year.

The tour wound up with a visit to a newly opened public-private venture, Caribbean Gold Standard Laboratory at the MCA’s headquarters at Rivulet.

A 41-YEAR-OLD FEMALE who died suddenly at home on September 9th, 2021, was found to have succumbed to COVID-19.

Health authorities reported on Monday 13, that the woman was not previously known to be COVID-19 positive. She had no known underlying conditions and was unvaccinated. Her death brought the death toll from COVID-19 to thirteen (13).

As of Wednesday 15 , there were two hundred and twenty-one (221) active cases. A total of two thousand, five hundred and fifty-nine (2,559) cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in St. Vincent and the Grenadines; with two thousand, three hundred and twenty five (2,325) recoveries recorded since March 2020.

32,577 people have been vaccinated: 19,702 fully vaccinated and 12,875 people have received their first dose.

by GLORIAH… LAST MONDAY, 13th August, the Ministry of Education and National Reconciliation received a donation of emergency supplies from COSCAB SVG Ltd. The supplies were handed over to Minister of Education, Hon. Curtis King by KOSCAB’s Operations Manager, Catherine Joseph. Also on hand to witness the handing-over were Deputy Chief Education Officer, Dixton Findlay and Accounts Clerk Denisa Findlay of KOSCAB. Several schools across St. Vincent and the Grenadines are now set to receive the items which will serve in their response to emergencies.

The package included eight generators, four gas cans (jerrycans), extension cords and ten boxes of hand sanitizers.

About the donation, Operations Manager Joseph acknowledged the

cordial relations that exist between both entities as she stated that, “On

behalf of COSCAB SVG Ltd. and our counterparts throughout the Caribbean inclusive of Puerto Rico, we’d like to hand over these generators, jerrycans, power supplies, and also we have some hand sanitizers, to the Ministry of Education. We just like to let you guys know that KOSCAB SVG Ltd. and KOSCAB on a whole, we are always here for the Ministry of Education and for St. Vincent and the Grenadines as a people.”

In his response, Minister King thanked KOSCAB for its commitment to the Ministry of Education and offered thanks on its behalf.

“COSCAB is no stranger to the Ministry of Education,” he declared, “they have, in the past, provided us with support for the running of our Inter-Secondary Schools Sports, so this is a continuation of that sort of support.”

He went on to stress the importance of the items donated, especially during this crucial time of the hurricane season. “Certainly, what we are receiving here this morning is very important especially because we are already into the hurricane season and we know the challenges that the season can pose,” he acknowledged, “and these generators would of great assistance given that we still use as shelters, most of our school facilities throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines. I need not remind you that during the passage of a storm, we always lose electricity; so that these generators, wherever they are placed would be a great need and of course, would be, I promise, taken care of and used for the purpose for which they were donated.”

WPP resumes mission

WORLD PEDIATRIC PROJECT (WPP) facilitated a successful recommencement of surgery on September 5, 2021, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The first General Orthopedic Mission since the COVID19 pandemic took place at the Kingstown Clinic.

With a full schedule of surgeries throughout the week, the clinic day had over 60 children, including regional children from Barbados and Dominica.

The WPP practitioners

were quite upbeat about the return to SVG. Tracy Przybylski, the Team Physiotherapist said, “It was not easy getting here, but we are just thrilled to be here... it is important to assess the children and help design fitness programs that they can perform within their tolerance.... so we are glad to be able to see them and get them on the right track.”

The repair work was conducted by J88EA — Ronald Haynes and YRM Director, J88CD — Donald De Riggs, who repaired, reinstalled and tested a damaged HF antenna operated by the lone female licensed radio operator J88NEK — Elna Michael.

The radio equipment used in Fancy was donated by Barrett Communications from Australia and has been used reliably to provide emergency communications services from that remote village.

At the time of repair, this was the only form of communication from that village, as the storm damaged some of the main communication lines into it.

That situation has now been remedied as, following the reinstallation of the antenna, the radio was tested with excellent reception reports received from stations in Barbados, St. Lucia and from a portable HF station in Fancy. From Fancy, there was a link via a VHF repeater in the South of St. Lucia which is also linked to a repeater in Grenada. J88EA was able to make contact with stations in Trinidad and Barbados, using a handheld VHF radio recently donated by the SVG Embassy in Taiwan.

“Operation RF” stands for “Repair Fancy”. The operation also gave the YRM the opportunity to test portable radio equipment, which was also used in Dominica in 2017, following the devastation of that island by Hurricane Maria. On that occasion the YRM was part of a joint medical and emergency communications response team, spending three weeks on that island and in the Wesley community in particular. The work conducted in Dominica included the repair of the generator at the Wesley clinic; the clearing of over a mile of road leading to the airport; bringing back ‘on air’ of the lone community FM station; coordinating the delivery of water, food and medical supplies via Canadian helicopter, as well the arrival of a team of over thirty medical doctors who came to do an assessment of the island’s medical situation and needs. NTRCÊs iCode784 competition launched REGISTRATION for the 9th edition of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission’s (NTRC) ‘iCode784’ competition is now open to secondary school students and other individuals under the age of 35.

This year’s competition got underway on September 15, 2021, with a virtual launch and will end on November 16, 2021 with the finals.

The registration period ends on October 8, 2021 at 4 p.m. and interested persons can register either on the NTRC’s website at www.ntrc.vc or access registration forms on the NTRC’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

The tech-savvy, and those not so tech-savvy will have the opportunity to compete in three categories — the Secondary School Mobile App and Idea categories — which is open to secondary school students only; and the Open category, which is open to both secondary school students and individuals under 35.

Participants will present either an idea relating to a mobile application or a mobile app that can improve a

service or sector within St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

As part of the guidelines for the competition, mentors are required for secondary school students entering in the Secondary School Mobile App and Idea categories.

According to Rhea Lewis, Consumer and Public Relations Manager at the NTRC, any teacher, parent or responsible adult with IT experience, or some background knowledge in IT, computer science or the development of apps are eligible to be a mentor.

Those entering are asked to do so in teams of two to four persons and the guidelines further stipulate that those persons selected for the final round in the Mobile app category and the open category are required to prepare a working prototype of the app.

Lewis added that participants were expected to conduct research at a private or public sector agency that they have based their ideas or mobile apps on, and they are required to explain to the panel of judges what makes their project innovative.

The second phase of

the competition — the preliminary judging phase — commences on October 19, 2021 with the judging of projects in the Secondary Idea category.

On October 20, 2021, judging in the Secondary Mobile App category begins, and on October 21, 2021, presentations in the Open category will be judged.

The top teams from all three categories will go on to the finals on November 16, 2021.

Prizes in this year’s competition are as follows: in the Secondary Idea category — 1st $2,000; 2nd - $1,000 and 3rd - $800.

In the Secondary Mobile app category: 1st - $4,000; 2nd - $2,000 and 3rd - $1,500 and in the Open category: 1st $5,000; 2nd - $2,500 and 3rd - $1,500.

In addition, the school with the most entries will receive a cash prize of $1,000; mentors will receive cash prizes ranging from $750 to $1,000 and all teams advancing to the finals, but not placing will each receive a cash award of $300.

Bailey not seeking SVGOC’s re-election TREVOR “SAILOR” BAILEY, President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Olympic Committee (SVGOC) since 1997, will not be seeking re-election at the Special General Meeting slated for 12th November.

Having been in the post for six consecutive terms, Bailey told the VINCENTIAN that it was time for him to step aside.

“I always ask the Lord to show me a sign and that sign came at the last elections, when for the first time I was

challenged,” Bailey intimated.

When the elections were staged in October of 2017, Bailey defeated Stephen Joachim 10-7 in the two-way race for the presidency.

Continuing the reasoning that also influenced his decision not to seek re-election, Bailey referred to the story of Gideon in the Holy Bible as strengthening his decision to call it day.

He noted that like the case of Gideon, God can work through leaders who are the boldest and

the most extroverted.

Bailey was part of the initial group that saw St. Vincent and the Grenadines in 1987 gaining affiliation to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1987.

“I can remember the days when we had meetings at the Bishop’s College Kingstown, trying to get five local disciplines which are Olympic sports and which were in good standing with their international bodies, in order to gain the IOC recognition.” Bailey

Satisfied that his tenure has resulted in some accomplishments, Bailey underscored that helping others topped the list saying, “I love helping people and I know during my tenure I have done that.”

Under his tenure, the organisation went through a name change from National Olympic Committee to the St Vincent and the Grenadines Olympic Committee, and Bailey holds fast to the view that the Olympic sports here are in a better place

than when he met them twenty-four years ago.

Other than his service to the umbrella body for most sporting disciplines here, Bailey is also a longstanding President of the SVG Cycling Union, the Caribbean Cycling Federation and a Vice- President of the Pan American Cycling Confederation (COPACI).

The eighteen affiliate disciplines to the SVGOC are Athletics (Track and Field), Aquatics, Basketball, Boxing,

Invaders win second rugby series INVADERS maintained their winning ways when they outplayed Sharks last weekend at the Sion Hill playing field, in a SVG Rugby Union hosted Sevens Series.

In game one in the Junior Division, Invaders romped to a 37-nil victory.

Ajay Depleche had two tries. Adrian Sam and Keiffer Westfield had one try each and Esroy Edwards had one conversion.

In a second Junior Division encounter, Invaders continued their sparkling form, beating Sharks 20-5.

For Invaders, Westfield was the leading scorer with three tries. Adrian

Keiffer Westfield was the top scorer for Invaders’ five tries.

Sam had one for the Sharks.

It was no different in the Senior Division.

Invaders downed Sharks 24-15. For Invaders, Janta Bowens scored two tries and a conversion, and Westfield and Alesco Samuel had one try each.

Dillon Durant had two tries and Brian Alexander had one try for the Sharks.

Westfield, the Series’ leading scorer, in an after match comment said, “Well, I feel good because I was able to score important points for my players and my team. I just went and played and enjoyed the game. After missing the first game, I wanted to do my best.”

The sessions are expected to focus initially on the basic tactics and techniques of the game, Huggins added.

Participants will also be involved in matches as a means of judging their progress.

Huggins expressed the hope “that the kids will have fun, socialize while forming a network for life, and to fall in love with the game and just continue playing.”

Patriots home with premier honours ST. KITTS/NEVIS PATRIOTS, egged on by vociferous support, cruised to victory in the Caribbean Premier League 2021 final at Warner Park last Wednesday afternoon. The climax was fitting for the showpiece T/20 event with six teams in the race.

The announcement of the World Cup squad for the fence of the title in weeks, heightened the rivalry among players. Those selected wanted to prove their inclusion was right, while those on the fringe, or considered themselves to have been overlooked, doubled efforts to raise their stakes.

It is no surprise that resources are available, though not in abundant supply, but sufficient to provide reasonable hopes for development. What is needed is proper execution of the relevant aspects.

Wherever people are, there are bound to be differences. It is interesting to see the passion show by Caribbean leaders in rallying support for their citizens.

This is not new as the Caribbean is known for its attachment to cricket. It is natural for governments to pay attention to what its people are into.

Cricket serves as tourism promotion, so much so that when one’s nationality is mentioned, that is an international advertisement.

The bid for hosting international games comes as a regional showdown as countries line up for the spill over of the tourism dollar. That serves as compensation for the provision of infrastructure and facilities to accommodate the staging of events.

However, one has to be mindful of the vagaries of ongoing factors, and each border has its complexity.

The CPL offered a level of therapy, embraced in the time of crowd restriction. The matches were enthralling. The hope is that the extent of relief was so satisfying that persons might have been lured into dropping their guard.

Many a bizarre moment flourished during the tournament, tending to raise eyebrows as to the credibility of some occurrences. That’s for the analysts to decipher. For the most part, the cricket was glorious, and everyone was kept on edge.

As is wont with every championship, there emerge the heroes who progress to greater heights. The West Indies will be encouraged by the reserves they can call on, and have we not seen that depth when a new-look squad swept to a series win in Bangladesh?

The CPL provides that avenue for the region to continue to unearth natural talent. Make no mistake, T/20 cricket is as good a breeding ground for cricketers to perform at any level. Once you can grasp the rudiments of the fast game, you will be adequately equipped to handle the game at the longer level.

Roston Chase is a good example, and he makes no effort to conceal it. T/20 Cricket provides time for the decent batsmen to come to terms with the conditions. And there need not be total bat swinging. Timing, technique, writ work and situational awareness can allow a batsman to build innings, comparable to the longer version.

X-Cel Track Club athletes off to Jamaica TWO MEMBERS of the X-Cel Track Club, Amal Glasgow and Rolando Andrews, have been enrolled at the Kingston College in Jamaica.

The two, who are former students of the St Vincent Grammar School, enter the sixth form of the institution.

Glasgow is one of this country’s upcoming 400m runners, while Andrews, who has had limited outings, is specializing in the Jumps, with the Triple Jump being the favoured event.

Delighted with the turn of events for the two, Head of the X- Cel Track Club and longstanding Physical Education teacher at the St. Vincent Grammar School- Rawlson Morgan, said that he wished them well.

“I hope they make full use of the opportunity presented to them”, Morgan projected.

Both Glasgow and Andrews in return expressed delight with the opportunity to train and school in Jamaica, and promised to give of their best in their academics and Track and Field.

ANNAMAY WINS FIRST ROUND

by HAYDN HUGGINS ATTORNEY Kay Bacchus-Baptiste says that last Wednesday’s decision of the state to withdraw the charge of wounding Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, brought against her client Annamay Lewis, clearly shows that all the charges brought against Lewis and others involved in three recent protest actions, are not genuine.

Bacchus-Baptiste, the lead lawyer in the matter, spoke to THE VINCENTIAN on Wednesday, just minutes after Lewis was cleared of that charge.

The 56-year-old vendor of Layou was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Gonsalves by striking him with a missile on his head, during a protest action, organized by the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) and other organizations, and staged in the vicinity of the House of Assembly on August 5, 2021.

When the matter was called at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday both parties were summoned but only Lewis was present. When she took the stand, Crown Counsel Rene Simmonds, appearing for the state, informed the Court that the Prosecution was withdrawing the charge.

“I expected that”, an elated Bacchus-Baptiste admitted, and hastened to add that her client had been in custody for four nights, and the defence would be taking steps in relation to what the lawyer described as a ‘bogus charge’.

VINCENTIAN, Bacchus-Baptiste said, “We will be taking further steps in relation to false arrest, false imprisonment, and malicious prosecution, even though the prosecution did not go all the way. They did the wise thing and withdrew the charge. It
